Speaker 1 (00:00):
Game on with John Alice, heard everywhere on the iHeartRadio while.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm going a good time on a football Friday. Man
twenty first in November. Hard to believe that Thanksgiving is
next week and it has relevance to the NFL as
we look at all the things we're thankful for with
our NFL teams and we're taking a look at the
standings and all of a sudden, for the first time
in a while, your Carolina Panthers, if you're so inclined
to cheer for that team here in the Upstate, have
(00:37):
a fighting chance at a playoff spot and to help
us break down those prospects and more recently their win
against the Atlanta Falcons. Are good, Buddy, Mike K Charlotte
Observer Mike, how you doing, Bud?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I'm well, how are you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Good? Man? Good to catch up with you and you
can follow them at Mike Underscore e underscore K on
Twitter and for Charlotte Observer dot com. Just Yeoman's work
as always, and Mike, I want to get your instant
reaction here. We've had some time to sort of trade
some thoughts on social over the past few days, and
you've written up some great pieces on Bryce Young in
terms of what he was able to do and the
entire passing game for that matter, to come back into
(01:11):
Atlanta put up a career high and a franchise record
in passing yards. Your early impressions are your, I guess
your lasting impressions of what was a remarkable game for Young.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
On the offense, Yeah, it seemed like up until this
game the offense had regrets a lot of the skill
position players that regrets, including Bryce Young, because the offensive
play calling seemed to be fighting the quarterback and fighting
some of the weapons. It was a Peto McMillan show
(01:41):
and nothing else. And when you become one dimensional, especially
in the passing game, that can really bite you. And
so we saw a lot of low scoring wins where
the defense had to kind of prop up offense. That
was not the case in Atlanta. Reichsham was decisive, He
was accurate, He made really good plays, keeping plays alive
(02:02):
with his legs. I thought he was brilliant. I mean,
it was a signature performance the top last year's finale
in Atlanta, and he just felt very in control of
the offense once they opened it up.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
He did. He looked comfortable and you know you hope
for more of the same. And one of the reasons, Mike,
I think you'd agree and most of America would right
now is Ted ROA. McMillan has been an exceptional acquisition
for this team through the draft. And you know, there
was a lot of conversation about this draft pick, as
there always is in leading up to the draft, and
some of it was, as my dad would say, pure malarkey, Mike,
(02:35):
but some of it was legitimate in terms of maybe
the concerns about straight line speed if you're into that. Ultimately,
when I saw him on the field at training camp,
and I'm sure you share some of this too, he
just looked different. It felt different with this guy, and
thus far, although he's not a complete product, he is
a rookie, he's been pretty refined in how he plays
the game.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, totally agree. I have eaten Crow both in the
exclusive access Anther's newsletter, which you can send up for
on chilod observer.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Dot com, which is free.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
By the way, I've eaten cro because I liked the pick.
I didn't love it, but he has really just been
a pros pro since he got here. All of the
concerns about his speed, and his vertical ability and his
love for football have all been squashed. In my opinion,
he has been locked in. He looks the part, he's
(03:28):
making plays. I think you have to feel really good
about not only McMillan, but the entire draft class as
well as undrafted rookies like Ryan Fitzgerald, Corey Thornton and
Bam Martin Scott, like there is a return on these
rookies that we have not seen in a lot of
(03:50):
you know, for a lot of teams, a lot of
really good franchises, and the Panthers have done really well
for themselves this offseason.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
You can critique a lot of things, Mike when when
you look at any franchise, and certainly Carolina is not
immune to that. But one thing I tipped my hat
to is the patient and I would say reserved approach
from Dan Morgan and company in terms of draft allocation,
draft assets, trade deadline potential moves. I felt that that
was fool's gold this time around. You've got a good
(04:18):
young core and I think i'm I'm a Panthers fan.
You might have wanted another weapon opposite of McMillan, or
maybe a safety, maybe a backer, but these are not
easy things to come by, and the grand scale of it.
Over the past two years, Dan Morgan has known what
he wants and he's gone out and done it in
the trenches, both through the draft and through free agency.
(04:39):
I think that's one area where you can give him
a plush over the last couple of years. In terms
of their patient approach, yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Think, and I've been pretty consistent on this. I think
twenty twenty six the year they view themselves as being
set up to contend and contend long term. They do
not want to be with the giants were with Brian
Dabele and Joe Shane where they won right away. You
like touches saw from Daniel Jones, You like touches saw
from Saquon Barkley. You started signing extensions, you started training
(05:08):
for Brian Burns, you started doing all this stuff, and
they weren't ready for that, and they were not good
and they regressed. The Panthers want to sustain winning, and
if David Tepper is going to hold the fort down
from the standpoint of being patient, which he has the
last few years, he's given these guys a lot of
(05:29):
runway and a lot of trust. I feel like this
is the right move for them, is to be patient
and set yourself up so you can knock the pins
down and consistently been a.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Fun season so far. Obviously no shortage of drama at
the end of these games, and Carolina is finding themselves
on the flip side of that coin versus last year.
Turning to the defense, you know, we've been seeing a
lot of people in the national landscape talk about the
run defense for Carolina. I saw Mina Kaimes earlier had
a very nice podcast discussion about this. You and I
(05:59):
have talked about it as well, and of course everybody
who covers this team has taken notice, and I think
it is fairly remarkable. Mike and I don't want to
be too hyperbolic here, but just this time last year,
we were talking about how they couldn't get anybody off
the field in the run game at a historic clip
for this franchise, and you know, through some parts that
are young and through some parts that are growing into
(06:21):
their roles there. Of course, Derek Brown does help a
lot in Travon Merrick as well. They've turned it into
a manageable run defense and at times they've dominated.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, and if you look at everybody who talked about
the final nine games right where Bryce had his stretch, Well,
if you look at that, they the defense during that
time was giving up twenty nine point two points per game.
Heading into this last matchup against Atlanta, they were allowing
twenty two point two points per game. So they shaved
an entire touchdown crazy off their average heading into week eleven.
(06:55):
So like the sample size of ten versus nine, like
they were a touchdown least given up, and that's pretty impressive.
I mean, I think overall the defense's played well, but yeah,
the run defense, everybody's attacking. I think Bobby Brown's made
an impact. I think Nick s Gorton's been huge. I
think obviously, as you mentioned, Derek Brown's a pro bowler.
(07:18):
I don't think there are five interior defensive linemen who
are better than him. And look, I think for the
most part, Trevin Wallace and Christian rosebooms and switching their
responsibilities up. I believe it was week three or week five, whichever,
I'm sorry. Off the top of my head, they've been
(07:38):
terrific too against the run. So I think it's the
collective thing. And run defense, as you know, is a
collective situation. It's not one on one passing situations. It's
not down coverage of two guys in a zone. It
is everybody to the ball and it's work.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Yeah, it does take a village to make it right.
I credited Gyre Evro and his staff for, you know,
staying the course with it. Because there's a coach right
there that you and I both know knows ball and
he'll be potentially a head coach one of these days.
But he's turned it around quite a bit. Talk again,
it's not a sexy topic, but special teams does matter.
It matters a lot for Carolina this year when you
look at Ryan Fitzgerald, what he's done in winning time,
(08:20):
not just in terms of the field goals, but man,
the dirty kicks that the ability to win field position.
The coverage unit's been great, and I think Tracy Smith,
you know, Darren Bates, the entire group there and the
personnel as well. He's done a great job of winning
some games in the margins. Mike, that's a big difference
now in terms of not only knocking the field goals home.
Sam Martin has been solid. The coverage units have been good.
(08:40):
Since that, I guess we could say the Jacksonville and
Buffalo games, New England comes to mind, but overall, I
think that's something that goes untold. They've done a really
steady job this year.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, I think what she seems to do is kind
of a crabsheet because there's always kind of constant guys
moving in and out. But when you look at Bryce
and Tremaine, how he's become like this like Foak Hero
Special Team Thomas Incoombe. I've heard from multiple people in
the building that he is the rest Special Teams player
and that he is an unequivocal favorite of the staff.
(09:16):
And so I think like they feel good about those
two guys, Nick Scott playing more as a personal protector. Now,
they're doing the right things by this team, and I
think they're shining in a way that is productive as
opposed to detrimental for the Panthers.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
The game, of course Monday Night, and then there's a
grander theme to this game in terms of what it
means to the franchise, what it means to this regime.
But let's get in the weeds a little bit and
talk about the matchups. Obviously, San Francisco on the defensive
side of the ball. They're down some personnel right now,
and it's showing up in their past defense and on
the flip side on their offensive attack, it's McCaffrey. It's
(09:57):
McCaffrey through air, it's McCaffrey on the ground. The EPA
in the ground game is not great, But overall, just
size up the matchup on either side and how you
see it going on Monday night.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Well, I think it's gonna be a it's gonna be
a matchup of over the middle right between McCaffrey and Kittle,
and then on the opposite side. This forty nine Ers
defense since losing Fred Warner, has been horrific against tight end.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
They've given up.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Four touchdowns in the last three games to the position.
They've given up over three hundred yards to the position
over the last five games. There's an opportunity here, especially
because the Panthers use three tight ends and don't just
focus on one. If you look at what the Rams
did to the forty nine Ers a few weeks ago,
they attack them with all of their onslought of rotational
(10:45):
tight ends. I think they've got a shot there, but
look right, it's gonna have to avoid turnovers as Rock
Purty typically does, and Rico's gonna have to run the
rock like They're gonna have to match them beat by beat.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Certainly, there was one little piece I wanted to bring
up here to you, Mike, Mike K. Charlotte observers our guests,
and it's of no two fans here in the upstate
of a certain school down there in Clinton, and it
has to do with Hunter Renfro, who obviously has been
inactive for several weeks in a row now made an
impact earlier in the season. Give us some general themes
of this story that I just shared on social here
is as Hunter Renfro again, what a great comeback story,
(11:24):
no matter how many games he plays this year.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yeah, I think he's kind of stuck between two door frames. Right,
he's the veteran who's making a comeback, But he's also
a guy who probably is doesn't have the upside of
a guy like Jalen Cocher or Xavier League or even
Jimmy Horn. And when you're leaning into a youth movement,
the older guys who are really lot specific are going
(11:49):
to take a step back. Like even before Jalen Cocher
was back, you saw Hunter Renfro's role diminished. It was
pretty easy to see where they were going with this,
even with David Moore out with an elbow injury. It
just seems like they want to develop their young guys.
In terms of the most part, it's worked because since
he's been benched, I believe there's three and two and
(12:12):
you know, they want to get more out of Jailen Coker,
which is obviously a thing that they've wanted to do
since training camp. When they trade away Adam Feeling and
drop on a rentrow.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Initially, he's Mike Ky.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
He's with the Charlotte Observer and you need to listen
to the Processing Blue podcast. It's one of the great
Panthers pods out there. I would know because I'm also
doing that five years running now and we enjoy listening
to you on that pod. We enjoy your work, Mic
and you're a good friend and even better with your reporting. Bud.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and we'll catch you
next home game. Bud.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
It was great hearing your voice. Sean, have a great night.
Speaker 5 (12:46):

Speaker 2 (12:46):

Brown is here. JB does work with Blue Ridge High
(15:49):
School and he's into the broadcasting biz and former coach.
Uh it looks like he could still go out and
coach a team do a perfect record at this point. Uh,
he's got a ring on his finger that I I
want to ask you about that ring. What what significance
does that ring hold? Do you? Well?
Speaker 5 (16:03):
I've been blessed to I have a I'm in the
Hall of Fame at my high school.
Speaker 8 (16:07):
At high school and in two thousand and five, as
an assistant coach, we won a state championship out of boys. Wow,
one hundred and ninety seven. I'll never forget that score.
Oh five, right five.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
I was covering you guys for the Greenville News back then. Yeah,
I was there. I was a stringer on Friday nights.
Speaker 8 (16:22):
Man Jeff Davy was the head coach, and I always
won the assistants and we won a one hundred and
ninety seven that was.
Speaker 5 (16:28):
That was a fun game.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Let me ask you this. We had this topic a
while back. The best high school player you've ever seen
in the state. Yeah, no matter if they made it
big or not, like the witness face to face, like
on the field in person. You didn't have to coach necessarily.
But who's the guy that stood out? Like damn?
Speaker 8 (16:44):
There's two that stood out to me. One when I
was playing, he was older than I was. His name
was Everick Sullivan. He used to be he was an
east Side coach for a couple of years, last few
years and then but I was in ninth grade or
excuse me, I was in eighth grade and he was
playing at Hillcrest. Yeah, and we used to go watch
him play and he was like the Michael Jordan of
high school. Like he would get he would have slam
(17:06):
dunks like unbelieve's wild. One of the best, probably the
best kid I ever coached against, was Devin Downey Okay
in South Carolina, yep, from Chester.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
I remember, he was really really really good. The best
I ever covered, and I didn't cover Greer a lot,
but I was on the beat down there for the
state championship one year and Sidney Rice stood out to
me from Gaffney as the guy that among others. And
I never covered Hopkins either, that was a little bit
after my time. But Sidney Rice was amazing. Oh yeah,
and he played every sport up there in Gaffney. I mean.
And that's the other thing we talk about, like coaches.
(17:35):
One Greg Olsen had mentioned this on social the other day,
and you can relate to this jab as a guy
who's coached and understands the game. And we all know
this as guys who have either kids or nephews or
friends that have kids. Play every sport you can, right, Oh,
play them all.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
I don't. Don't.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Don't isolate yourself the one sport. So many parents make
that mistake. Play everything and let it work out.
Speaker 8 (17:55):
See the problem with that, in my personal opinion, is
you play that one sport over and over, the kids
gonna get tired of it time they get to high
school or time they get instead of like moving on
to college, they're like, I just want to quit.
Speaker 5 (18:07):
I don't want to do anything. So yeah, play as
many as you can.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
And I tried to a jail man. I didn't, you know,
didn't pan out. You can look at me right now,
I'm buying a microphone.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
Put a great effort, great effort.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Hey, Peach Blossom her nineteen ninety six Peach Blossom Golf champions.
I was a part of that team Varsity. I was
the fifth man on that team. Hey, hey, look that somebody.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
Has somebody's got to be the fifth man.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Right the guys I had to play against right Bill Hoss,
J Host Junior, Lucas Glover, DJ Treyhan, Dustin Johnson came
and I beat Billy Hason, J Hasson JA. I know
him still from Host Family Golf. I beat him one time?
Is it links to try on? And I was coming
up like the seventh hole and Jay Junr It's like
(18:54):
looking over, like how many you at? I'm like four hunder.
He's like, how I finished the turd? I'll never forget that?
And I said, what was that? Disrespect? He's like, I
don't know, but how how did you do that?
Speaker 7 (19:10):
Check?
Speaker 2 (19:12):
It looks like erect No, I'm an honest man. I
played an honest round of golf. Big Question of the
Day brought to you by our friends at Engles Markets
Low Prices, love the savings. You can pick one person
from sports all time, probably a sports commentator. We be
best here to narrate your life. Who would it be
famous sportscaster or anybody in sports to narrate your life
(19:35):
or to eulogize you. Maybe two four zero five, four
eight zero, Give it some thought, y'all give it some
Who would you want to? Is it is? Well?
Speaker 5 (19:44):
I can think of.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
There's two of them on my desktop. Do you have
them up right now?
Speaker 3 (19:50):
No?
Speaker 9 (19:50):
You don't.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Okay, well that's a that's a tall ass. No. Have
you guys been following it all? You know we say
this tongue in cheek. Obviously there's a lot of great voices.
I would love to narrate my life back. Bring back
Pat summerle the golden pipes of Pat Summer All. But
on the other side of that, have you guys been
following Cam Skataboo this season? The running back of the Giants?
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Have you old heads like me? We're all a bunch
of bunks here. Have you been following him on social
media lately? I have not? Okay, well, apparently what he
likes to do when he's not playing football. Like most
kids that are twenty one, twenty two, jab you know
this as you know this get online and play some
video games. And so the other night not Nintendo nes either,
(20:36):
like we did.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Pac Man Player, the Player of the Year, oh man man.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
The other night, he's on injured Reserve now, and New
York Media is losing her minds over this, saying he
needs to lock it and focus. I'm saying, no, give
me some more of this. Let me give you the
audio right now. It's Cam Scataboo asking people on Twitch livestream,
hundreds of thousands of people about the right way to
eat a taco.
Speaker 10 (21:00):
Do you like turn your head to eat a taco
or do you turn the taco for you? Like, are
you dominant to the taco or to the taco? Like
do you turn your head for the taco? It's about
the dominance of the taco though, Like if you're not,
(21:21):
if you're turning the taco, you're dominating the taco.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
So so let's let's discuss this, gentlemen. I've given this
a lot of thought here, Trey, you've already decided you
you turned to the taco, right.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Yeah, because I don't want to spill my taco all
over the floor.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
Right, So you get a taco like this, So Cam Scataboo,
who was born with CTE. Apparently we do believe we
will applying that that's quite possibly started water. Guys, answer
the question from Camp Scataboy, and you eat a taco,
do you turn your head to the taco or do
you turn the taco to you?
Speaker 1 (21:52):
For you?
Speaker 2 (21:53):
For you?
Speaker 7 (21:53):
Oh? I turned my head, yeah, you got to yeah yeah,
the ingredients right they spilled up?
Speaker 5 (21:58):
Yeah, because you don't, you'll be.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Right, that's right. I'd rather eat it wear it. I mean,
that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 7 (22:05):
I mean, you even, I mean, if you've never eaten
a taco before, you will soon find out that you
need to turn your head.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
I think Cam Scataboo is an actional treasure. And that team,
I know they're terrible right now they're two and eight one,
but boy they're entertaining. Jameis Winston, Cam Scataboo, Jackson Dark
running around, running into the tent as bad as Cam
scattaboy is brand a bolt chasing him into the tent.
Please come back? What are you doing scattaby helping and pass?
(22:34):
Did he get you get fined for that? Yeah? He
did and then he got Firedn't matter now now back
to the taco right quick. Now, if you're eating a
saft shell taco, there you go. You don't have to.
Speaker 7 (22:49):
Right foull taco, fuld the top a little bit, and
you don't have to turn your head.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
But if you get a bad neck though, what I mean,
what if you're like not eating that anyway, that we'll
get me in trouble. It's it's kim Scattaboo's fault. All
of it's kim scattaboos fault. Let's take a quick call
before we hit our next break. Welcome into game on
(23:16):
how you doing?
Speaker 4 (23:18):
Hey? John?
Speaker 9 (23:19):
Is Rocky coing?
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Rocky? Happy Friday? Rock What's going on?
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Man?
Speaker 4 (23:23):
Ah?
Speaker 9 (23:24):
Heading home from work? I'm calling the best of your
question of the day, and it's a no brainer.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
Who I would want to.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Narrate my life?
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Who got Bob?
Speaker 3 (23:33):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Come again? You broke up there?
Speaker 9 (23:35):
Bob Uker.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Bob Uker, Oh my goodness. Bob Uker one of the
most prolific broadcasters ever because he did everything. He did
the Miller High Life commercials, he was in the movie
Major League, and he also called games for the Brewers.
He was on NBC. That guy was a machine. Yeah,
and his voice impeccable, impeccable.
Speaker 9 (23:57):
If he ever described the way I hitched, he would say,
guy Rocky would throw at his own mother.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Just to been outside. All right, Oh Rocky man, how
you feeling about this football weekend? Man?
Speaker 9 (24:15):
Ah, well, something in Carolina are taking it off. I
think there's gonna be a few good games. I'm I
might be kind of busy. I'm doing a little farm
sitting for my significant other, and I'll be watching a
bunch of goats and chickens and cats and and uh anything.
I'll be out on the farm in t r So
(24:35):
outside of kit.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
We might have to set a shop out there one
day to do a live show from the farm.
Speaker 9 (24:40):
We would be well, you're gonna need some big time
credentials if you're gonna cross that dang gate.
Speaker 6 (24:46):
People call yours.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yes, that's right. Beginning on the other left, you have
that cool boss Rocky's represented by Drew Rosenhouse.
Speaker 9 (24:54):
Now, have a good weekend. I'm getting more NFA. The
NFL is starting to get interesting, so I'm I'm kind
of taking a look at at that. So and you know,
my fide gig is the Panthers. I am a Commander's
fan football if they can in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
They're sniffing around right now. They're they're right there on
the cuspit of a division title. If they can beat
San Francisco Monday night, that's a big game. Rocky, be
good this weekend, man, Take care on the farm.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
Take care guys, all right?
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Or height of them go sports there? Two four zero zero, Yes,
I know that was oh man, how about last night? Yeah, oh,
we haven't even gotten into the meat of this game, man,
Josh Allen. All of a sudden, these teams all they
(25:53):
were begging for, I would guess in their minds for
the last five years is please give us one. Chiefs
here where they kind of stink, they finally get it,
and all of a sudden, the Ravens, the Bills, who else?
Who am I leaving out here? The Lions, All these
teams that have been you know, roadblocked by the Bills
(26:13):
are suddenly struggling to make the playoffs with the Chiefs.
And the Bills looked bad last night. They do trade
they bad.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
It's fine.
Speaker 11 (26:22):
Come come the playoffs when they play against the Steelers there,
trust me, they'll look great.
Speaker 6 (26:26):
I promise.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Well, I'm gonna say again it's setting up that way.
I know every time we do the we run the numbers.
We'll go through it again in a minute. We'll see
ifnything has change. As we're joking around guys that you know,
Tray's a big Steelers fan. And the playoff picture right now,
it sets up perfectly if you're a Steelers doomer, which
he is, the Steelers would be the fourth seed and
they would host the Bills in the wild card, and
(26:49):
of course the Bills would come in and just you
have no faith in the Steelers. You sound you sound
like my best friend. We are for my best friend.
His name is Reggie.
Speaker 7 (27:02):
Also, we've been best friends since we were five years old. Yeah,
and he's a Stillers fan. And we had this conversation
just probably two weeks ago, and I'm like, man, you
guys in first place. Man, And all of a sudden,
it's like, no, man, but we got the schedule coming up.
We got the schedule coming up, We got the schedule
coming always. He was dooming gloom I'm like, but you
know you're in the first place right now. You know
(27:23):
I'd be happy. He's not happy because the schedule is
exactly But my thing is I'm in first place right now,
I'd be jumping for Joey.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Look at us, Look at I mean, look at where
the Panthers have been all the and now Miami. They
had a couple of years where they were in the
playoff hunt, but now it's been a tough struggle. I
know you're pain wretch I felt.
Speaker 4 (27:42):
Do you know?
Speaker 2 (27:43):
I know you're I hollered so much when we beat Buffalo.
What's going on? I mean, the drought has been painful
for the.
Speaker 7 (27:53):
Take any little bit of happiness I can get, you know,
if I can plug it for one week, I can
think it for one week.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
He's been the first place all year and and now
look all of a sudden and not not get off
the Steelers track here, but let's take a break from
the whiners that have won twenty twenty championships to their name.
Reggie Action Jackson, let me ask you something here before
we go to break, because we have not had too
many NFC East fans on this show. Now we have
(28:22):
a pair of them. JB. Europ Pats guy. The Pats
basically gave the Dolphins about a three year break and
they're like, we're back pretty much, and we've got Tom
Tom Sun. We learned about Buffalo and now here's New
England back on the track. Would you fire McDaniel.
Speaker 7 (28:42):
It's tough. I like McDaniel. I like what he brought
when he first showed up. And my thing is, you
don't forget how to coach.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Yeah, that's true. They downloaded a lot of good players.
Speaker 7 (28:56):
We always do that. This is so much about the Dolphins.
We Jaalen philipp shift the best players out the door.
Pretty sure is not going to the bag.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Yeah, I think at this point you're right. You know,
hope Waddle sticks around. You gotta keep on.
Speaker 4 (29:13):
Don't know.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
But they tried to trade them before the chance chance.
Speaker 5 (29:15):
I love him.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
I love him too. I mean he's already been paid.
You gotta get a ride with him.
Speaker 7 (29:20):
Right, gotta you got to for now at least one
more year, Yeah, at least one more year. I wouldn't
fire Daniel McDaniel. I I just don't think you forget
how to coach. You gotta find This is what I
love about the Steelers. They don't file the coaches.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
Yeah, well that's what they hate about the Steelers exactly, Tomlin.
But that's not because that's the stability that you have
within an organization. I would take that any day of
the week and give me a run of ten win
seasons and in case, you know what it would like
to have twenty no losing seasons. No, I don't know
you like I wouldn't take you. I don't know what
(29:58):
it's like to have back to back winning season. In fact,
the Panthers have never done it. But to keep your coach,
you put the players around and build. Yes, you know,
I think you're right. I wouldn't fire him because you
start looking around. The mistake a lot of owners make
is they fire their guy and they try to find
and JB. You know this in coaching, Let's find somebody
with a totally different personality. They think Dan Campbell's grow
(30:19):
on trees. They don't. There's only a few of those.
And by the way, they had Damn Bamble in that building.
Speaker 12 (30:24):
Yes, it's a big old yeah, but he was not ready.
I know, I know, you see he's going through his
his would that time would.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
You like to have him?
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Now? Yes, JB is living a good life.
Speaker 7 (30:40):
But when he was interrom out and we didn't win
a couple of games onto him, yeah, I was like,
keep him keeping.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
But you know now he's calling plays with Ben Johnson. Gone,
he's got those old man got his readers on. That's
rightly pretty close.
Speaker 5 (30:57):
Yeah, you kind of looked like, get you a dinner.
Speaker 6 (31:00):
You gotta coach a lot or friends. The Dolphins.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
Hey, yeah, we need some help. I'm not a counselor,
but I can help with a football team.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. Set you
up for the six PM. I having a good time
here with some friends on Game Home.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Game On with John Alis, weekdays four to six on
one O four nine, Fox Sports Upstand.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Having a good time. I'm here. It's Game On, brought
to you by Ingles Market, Action Jackson. What time is
it the weekend? Baby? It is? Indeed, I won't even
repeat the statement, it stands on its own. You also
call us here. We're having a good time here. Action
Jackson's in the house with us. Polly Walnuts as always,
is here joining the show today as well as JB. Brown,
(32:20):
who knows ball. He knows football and finances. The man
takes pristine notes. He's a game guy man. He's been
in the world of coaching, he's in the world of
broadcasting now in the high school ranks. And he's just
been a pleasure to talk to today. And I was
looking at your notes earlier about some contract numbers. Yeah, man,
And you know what we were talking about that Texas
(32:42):
A and m loss that your game Cocks, we're having
to go through the other day. We'll get to that
at the top of next hour.
Speaker 5 (32:51):
I'm trying to get over there.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
You know. Well, you know, we can just talk about
Jerry Jones for the next hour if you want, cheery, buddy,
that's always a coming.
Speaker 7 (33:04):
We won't talk about I think he actually knew what
that meant when he says yes absolutely.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
On both fronts, the orland, the oil and gas variety
of it, and the other variety which we will not
dive into any further action. Jackson, it's uh, John nlyst
Trey Baco.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
I had to reactly like a dog knows when he's
trying to misunderstands up.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
Yes, I know what We're back after this act for sure? Stadium?
Did he even nickname for the city?
Speaker 5 (33:32):
You canna tell him out, Barston, what if you got
hit by Trump again?
Speaker 2 (33:35):
I'm not taking CJ over the Holmes. Let me tell
you about Sam darl You could have him right now
for a bag of him, and it's I'm just a
dumb sports talker.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
But I love to sturry up.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
John. Oh yeah, baby, the weight is over. I got
pure team right now. I woke up.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
I'm ready Finally something to argue about. That isn't your
co workers Fantasy trade pro post so or Bryce Young's
height the funny. It's game on with John Ellis and
trade poly Walnuts Falco with wal to wall NFL action
all season long.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
I am the new from first snap to final.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
Whistle, rookies, revenge games and questionable calls and absolutely zero
patients for your power rankings. Yeah, kir brought to you
by Ingles Low Prices. Love the savings hit. The phone
line said two four zero fifty four eight. Let's talk
some football. Here's John Alice. Oh yeah, football Friday, the
(34:34):
best kind of Friday out there.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
It's game on. We got a fun one today, y'all.
We got some fun people in studio with some of
our dear friends. A new friend JB. Brown is with
us here. JBC. Hello to everybody out there in our
listening area. How you're doing you? Hello and pick away
up what you can't see with mister Brown here is
perhaps the I would say unequivocally the greatest beard interm
(35:00):
white Beard, the gray beard. There for great Beard, white Beard,
what are you going with?
Speaker 5 (35:04):
Yeh, it's probably more white than it is great.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Santa Claus.
Speaker 5 (35:08):
That's right, Yeah, I get that a lot.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Absolutely no offense. No you you look you look good.
Don't trust me. I'm the one that needs to diet.
But the beard, it's it's come on now.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
I appreciate that very much.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I'm making him blush.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Note it's like we.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Stopped about the beard. When do you want grow one
like that?
Speaker 3 (35:26):
Buck?
Speaker 4 (35:26):
Never?
Speaker 6 (35:27):
This is the best you gets. It's all I got.
Speaker 5 (35:28):
I'll start and I will.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Well, let's see if Santa brings some of these teams
out there that are looking for playoff hopes something early here.
Carolina's taken on San Francisco this weekend on Monday night,
and of course we were looking at a game last night.
I just want to say something. By the way, Action
Jackson's in with us here. Action as a radio legend
of course Earth FM for many years and yes, Magic
(35:53):
ninety eight point nine and and and many other stations.
Action has known uh my family, and I've known Action
for going on I guess about fifteen twenty years now,
and just on a personal level, I appreciate your friendship.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Man.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
I don't know if I'd be still doing radio without
your influence. I appreciate it, brother, I do. I appreciate that.
And it's always great working with you. Man.
Speaker 7 (36:13):
It was, uh, it was just me getting back into
it at that time with you and Lauren oh Man
doing the morning show.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
Those were the days. Yeah, man, these are the days. No,
these are the days. Those were great. Aichin by the way,
she's down there in Columbia out there. Yeah, we were
just down there on this past Sunday having a lunch
with Lee Alexander. Where's my invite? So we got this
group snaps out chat am I prohibited because of my
iHeart affiliations. For those of you who knowed, where's the invite?
(36:44):
D set this up action Jackson was down in Columbia right, yes,
late Mury. Lee Alexander one of our great friends, radio legends.
All right, you guys have lunch with him from time
to time.
Speaker 7 (36:58):
He had his midday show and lunch with Yeah, and
so we a couple of months back we started we
got together. Uh, money Whitston called a bunch of us
to get together to surprisely for lunch money.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
By the way, Uh, when I was growing up, was
known as Wendy White on the Ellison James Show back
on whist Many is one of my favorites. One of
my favorites as well.
Speaker 7 (37:19):
So we got together a couple of months ago surprisingly
for lunch and we just kind of kept it going.
And this past weekend was out third gathering and we
got together down at Haddie Aikins and Laura Akins property
down at Labury Proper and we had the best time ever.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Man, it was just great. So it's growing, and uh,
we'll we'll, I'll see what I can do. A bunch
of put in a good word for me.
Speaker 13 (37:44):
Since you are a radio person and you did work
with Lee. I did Lee, so that that qualifies you
as an invite. To be honest, not only did I
work with Lee. And I'll say this without mentioning anything
beyond the pale here Lee and I and this happens
in radio. We were let go on the same day
from a certain station that we used to work with. Yeah,
(38:05):
we we we and this happened. It wasn't for ending bad.
We just was part of cutbacks and Laus.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
Love me.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Well, that's true, and we're very blessed here in this
time in space to do live local radio. It's very
rare you get to do that. And Ingles deserves a
lot of the credit for that. Melissa Level, our good
friend who does such a fine job supporting not just
local radio, but local broadcasting and regional endeavors in sports,
and she's taken it to a national scale. Now that's
(38:34):
just my little speech. Just thinking of Lee there. That
brought back some memories of what a great kind.
Speaker 5 (38:39):
Soul he was to me.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
It still is, yes, just an ultimate professional. You had
Lauren aken Morris, one of my dear friends from back
in the day. We did mornings together at a station
around the corner, and yeah, that was cool, but this
is this is the life. It was like a month
after we were let go that I found out that
that particular company was bringing a sports day into the Upstate.
I was like, yeah, damn, the worst time. Songs an
(39:06):
hour in the morning and I'm barely getting a word
in and all I want to do is be here
talking sports And look at us right now. It's you
know what fifteen years later and here we are. But
it's it's good to have you. Action Man. Always appreciate
you inviting me, and it's always nice to come and
hang out with you. Tours are always open. Yeah, you
live in the dream. I want to be like you
when I grow up. My bulls to chart stave. I'll
(39:30):
take that. Well, I'm kidding. It's a great life. Here's
the ingles big question of the day, uh for you Here,
let's tee this up and see what y'all think out there.
You need one person in the world of sports all
time to narrate your life in a documentary or perhaps
speak on your behalf at your EU legit at your funeral.
(39:53):
Who would that be?
Speaker 4 (39:54):
Two?
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Four zero five four eight zero is the number we've
heard cam skataboo. That would be a no for me,
A big feed no Falco?
Speaker 5 (40:02):
Who come on?
Speaker 2 (40:03):
Think of it? Who would it be? Come on?
Speaker 9 (40:06):
Who?
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Who do you do? You?
Speaker 6 (40:07):
Can I get darkness? Retreat? Aaron Rodgers to.
Speaker 14 (40:09):
Narrate my life?
Speaker 2 (40:10):
What why?
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Why not?
Speaker 5 (40:14):
It would be fun.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
It would be like a five hour Rogan podcast.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
It would be.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
Who was your favorite sports play by play guy growing up?
Like John Okay? So he was a colored guy. But
he was playing he could do it, though, like if
he was asked to do it, who would be? Like
some aer All was his partner for years. Al Michaels
comes to Mike, like, who was the guy that when
that voice came on it meant something to you? Because
(40:45):
I've got a few I'll tell you, man, that's a
good question. It is a good question.
Speaker 7 (40:52):
Man.
Speaker 2 (40:52):
Stumped, you could just say Don Munson. Don was one
of my leaguers.
Speaker 7 (41:00):
Now, but see I didn't listen to done much because
he was, you know, he was doing the Clemson thing.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
Jim Phillips was Don's predecessor, and Don still to this
day says, I'm not the voice of the Clemson tires
with Jim Phillips doing his thing.
Speaker 7 (41:12):
Jim Phillips got a picture with him, Jim Phillips man
the Braves commentator, Oh.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Skip carry No, how about that? They had four Johnson
Ernie Johnson, Oh, the old one, the older one.
Speaker 14 (41:24):
Ernie Johnson, Yes, Van wearing Pete. Van Warren was just
so he had that under Will you just hear? I
just just knew, Hey, his Braves Baseball ws.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
B radio down there. I think it was WSB doing
the Braves schemes at the time, I was the other
prison will probably be Al Michaels. He will be next
after after.
Speaker 6 (41:42):
I want to take Al Michael's a bedtime.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
Yeah, I was a little sleepy last night. Yeah, did
you see last And I love Al. I still think
Al cuts the mustard when it comes to doing Prime. Yeah,
and you know what Prime, he's some some nerd talk
here from one broadcast to a couple of others here
and then JB as well. When I watch those games
on Prime, there is some problem with the processing or
something the mix. It's off the it's quiet as hell
(42:08):
in the stadium, way too much of Kirk and ol
and it's just a little subtle roar. Yeah. I don't
know if it's the processing.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
Or what it is.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
People lots smarter than I. You look into that, why
don't you. Yeah, I'll do the research, call up Allan
Kirk and see what's going on there the game itself
last night. We'll get back to our question about best
announcers of all time. It says more about Houston, I think,
than it does Buffalo. Look, we fall into this trap
of believing teams are oh, they're gone, they're cooked, their
(42:40):
toast and then we over annoint teams that have these
statement wins. It's somewhere in the middle. But boy, what
has been constant this year with Houston is their defense.
And I looked at that matchup last night, I said,
not only does that make a difference in this matchup
with Josh Allen turning the ball over a lot lately.
Now he's making some halacious plays six touchdowns last week,
(43:02):
But it starts in the trenches, and Houston has shored
up there. You know, past sets in terms of protection,
Davis Mills has hold down the fort nicely with that long.
Speaker 6 (43:13):
Neck of his because he's said the whole field.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
Day all right, exactly, put a neck like that on
Bryce Young and we got everything solved. But no Stroud, obviously,
you know they've had other guys in and out of
the lineup. No John Mixon by the way, minutes, he's
been out for three weeks and they've been three and
o ever since. And Will Anderson, who we talked about
on this show preseason from Alabama. I said, you know what,
(43:36):
if it's not Miles Garrett or Watt, this guy's gonna
win Defensive Player of the Year. And he had two
and a half sacks last night. I think it speaks
to Dimico Ryans what a great coach he is. I
remember Tomiko, y'all remember when he played linebacker back with
Houston and Philly. Hell of a player. It's good to
see these former players out there coaching. Let's go to
the Engles hotline. Welcome into game on. How you doing?
Speaker 4 (43:56):
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (43:58):
Hey? Who we got here?
Speaker 4 (44:00):
This is Casey from Powdersville.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
Powdersville, Welcome into the show, sir.
Speaker 4 (44:04):
So I want to answer the question of the day. Definitely.
I got two choices, but I want them to work
in tandem. Harry Carry and Mike Tyson.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Oh my god, oh jeez. Let me go for the
crock and try to wake something up and see what
that would sounder. That would be Harry Carry, who I
remember watching when I was a kid on w g
N because everybody could watch Cubbs Baseball back the day
with Steve Stone. Oh my holy cow, what's funny Harry
(44:42):
Carry or Will Ferrells? Harry Terry, Yeah, I would think
he's a one either one. And of course Tyson, oh god,
you know Kim Scattby's the modern day Tyson that's that's
the cop right there.
Speaker 6 (44:58):
Cam scattybyl like more than your year off though.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
That's a boxing match. I want to see Tyson versus
scataboo usc UFC five U USC Yes, I know it
was soft celebrity boxing match. No, put him in the
put him a knock a gun?
Speaker 5 (45:13):
Yeahs off, baby, I'm a big UFC.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, uf C's where it's at. Man, No,
I love it. Man, that's a what was your name again?
Speaker 6 (45:24):
Casey?
Speaker 4 (45:25):
Casey?
Speaker 5 (45:26):
Yeah with Trey.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Really?
Speaker 6 (45:30):
Oh my god?
Speaker 2 (45:30):
Is this Casey Hord?
Speaker 4 (45:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (45:33):
What wait a minute, this is like a total this
is a reunion reunion Friday. I did not recognize you, dude.
Speaker 6 (45:42):
You can't do this on the air.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
No, go ahead, I'm gonna sit right and push the
mic back to catch up. Talk him up.
Speaker 11 (45:47):
Just list to the old high school score board together
with Ron with Ron, Yeah the afternoon.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
I've heard some stories about that's awesome. Well, we of
have to come back from break together and try to
hit the posts and radio nerd talk. May it's good
to hear your voice. Yeah, Casey, are you still in
the radio bus at all?
Speaker 4 (46:12):
Or I'm not? But I listen to you guys on
my drive home every evening. Man, great show. I appreciate
what y'all do.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Come see us sometimes, man, hang out, grab a mic,
and hopefully when we get back on the road to
make some live appearances, we'll be doing some remotes. I'm
sure in the new year. Let's catch up. Man. We're
always here to, you know, bring in friends of Falco,
especially the stories. I don't I love to hear some
of those stories.
Speaker 6 (46:38):
The old radio, old radio station.
Speaker 4 (46:40):
Oh boy, me and Billy from Taylor's got something common.
We're both Cowboys fans.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
Oh boy. Well, I mean, you know, obviously you're looking
for something right now, your your your team is looking better.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
The defense I was I was encouraged by, but then
again it was the Raiders.
Speaker 2 (46:59):
So you know, but that's what you do to teams
like the Raiders that are sort of lost right now.
They don't have an identity whatsoever. They draft a running
back who doesn't know how to pass, protect or catch
the football, and they have no offensive line. Pete Carroll's
about seventy three years old, and he's got Chip Kelly
running some of the worst past concepts ever. And they
(47:19):
came in and exposed all of that. It's what you
do to bad times. I think you guys can beat Philly.
I didn't pick them to beat Philly, but I feel
there's something off with Philly right now.
Speaker 4 (47:32):
A Jake a trade. At the time, I was disappointed
because Michael was one of my favorite players. But now
seeing what they've done, adding Kenny Clark, adding Logan Wilson,
Adam Quinn and William Yes, those guys. I mean the
run defense is where it starts. Like, if you can't
stop the run, then you're not going to be able
to do anything else.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
Casey think you know a thing or two about personal Really,
God like to bring Casey in to be alongside Steven
and Charlotte and Jerry Junior. Jerry I gotten Casey at
the bat. We'll call it Casey that it'll be a
podcast with me and and and your Casey and uh,
we're gonna find some glory.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
If I was ever in a room with Jerry Jones,
he'd probably get punched in the face.
Speaker 2 (48:16):
Well that's not nice. You might like Cowboys fan that's
spoken like, you can punch me all you want. You
might get hit by a bus like I said that
about Micah. But at the end of the day, you
better bring it or else here are going to be
in court.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
I'm all in.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
I'm going to suit with the.
Speaker 4 (48:34):
Cowboys and then uh. Since Dak has taken over the
starting quarterback job, is when the defense does play well
and the game is put on Dak's shoulders, he underperforms.
Speaker 2 (48:48):
There have been those moments there. They're like the Arizona
game comes to mind a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (48:52):
I think about that, and like, I mean, our defense
this year. Everybody's been harping on how bad it is,
and I agree, it's been bad up until this last game.
Moments where the defense has been making stops and then
Dak can't get a first down and string the drive together.
Speaker 2 (49:08):
Just what Dak needs to do at some point is
like a lot of quarterbacks, he's in that weird let's
call it the friend zone. Like he's not a franchise guy,
but he is. It's like, and it's so weird to
break this down without getting nuanced and looking at all
the tape. He's had some good playoff moments, the Tampa
(49:31):
game comes to mind, but there have been moments where
the collective offensive operation him included, have fallen short. In
big moments. Now they've gone against some really good teams,
but like, it's got to be a playoff winner two
during the course of a season. Maybe it's not this year,
but next year if they maintain these weapons and then
offensive line continues to grow. I like what they're doing
(49:53):
up front Pickens. I think there's some real good chemistry
going on between Dak and Pickens. Like I think Pickens
is final at peace with his career because Dak is
a high volume thrower.
Speaker 6 (50:03):
He was never gonna have that in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (50:05):
Never.
Speaker 6 (50:05):
He just wasn't.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
Just fundamentally, it's not how they run their organization.
Speaker 4 (50:08):
It's not.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
No.
Speaker 4 (50:09):
I think Dallas is The great thing I hate about
is I love his intangibles. I love his I love
him as a person. I mean, he's the type of
guy would let date my daughter. But well, but I
don't want him to be my quarterback.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
I wouldn't go so far as to say that. But
we need to talk about oil and gas and your
views on dates. Casey. Anytime you want to come up
and talk cowboys with us, man, it's always good to
connect with you. Bud all right, ye man, Joe, Cowboys
yay is the Cowboys take on the Eagles.
Speaker 10 (50:49):
But A J.
Speaker 2 (50:49):
Brown, I don't know if you guys saw the clip
of him, We're not going to replay it.
Speaker 6 (50:54):
Crashing out on somebody else now, isn't he?
Speaker 2 (50:58):
But that's the headline. The context of it is in JB.
You've been around athletes, you know this, and we all
follow sports. You've got to look at the full context
of what the comments are because if you don't, what
ends up happening is it goes all over every website,
every social media. And that's where AJ needs to be
smarter about this. His point is not without merit. I
(51:21):
don't think he's whining that he's not getting the ball enough.
I don't think it's self fulfilling. I don't think he
wants to be you know, ten catches one hundred and
fifty yards for no reason. I think he understands there's
something wrong with this passing game right now. And his
whole idea of this, you know, social media tour he's
doing with these little subtle subtweets is the way we're
playing right now. Ain't gonna cut it in the playoffs. Yeah,
(51:43):
there's a better way to raise it. But I think
the great teams, and Philly certainly has great players, and
I don't know if they quite have the full leadership
council they need starts with head coach to keep running
the way they have been. Last year felt like they're
gonna get their championship and going to be a few
years where they have problems in the playoffs because they
(52:03):
have something disconnected at the top and they can't get
rid of Brown. His contract is impossible to tread and
Hurts is their guy. So these two guys apparently are
on different planets right now. That's a really strange situation
for an eight win team.
Speaker 8 (52:17):
Guys, you wonder you wonder why Philadelphia has told Brown, hey,
let's keep him away from the media. You know, he's
try It's just keep him away from the media. In
that way, we won't have to worry about anything going viral.
But with I think he gets frustrated by Hurts because
Jalen don't take chances, like he's not going to swing
(52:38):
it down the field and things like that, and and
Brown probably would benefit from that.
Speaker 5 (52:43):
So I think maybe that might be.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
Brown would love Dallas, you would, But then again, maybe not.
We don't know what Brown really wants. Maybe Brown just
sees this as a impediment to get to where they
want to go. But most receivers, as we all know,
they wonder before they want the ball. Their money relies
upon it in a lot of ways with incentives. So
it's a weird eight and two team like they're not
(53:07):
running the ball particularly well. They have it all year.
The tush push is their go to item when it's
third and three or less, yep, or fourth and three
or less that right now, it feels like a team
that's gonna get beat the first game they play in
the playoffs, whether it's the wild Card, if they get
a buye. I just I see them. I see an
early exit Super Bowl hangar.
Speaker 5 (53:26):
I do the Rams.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
I think the Rams would whoop their ass right now.
Speaker 14 (53:29):
The playoffs they do look strong and steady, steady.
Speaker 2 (53:33):
You know, I know what Philly did to him earlier
this year. And Tony, you're a big Eagles fan. I'm
not trying to rip on your boys here, but I
what bothers me too, is that you know, I'm in
locker rooms covering the Panthers right Heart Radio, so you
get to know these players and when they have the
camera on AJ and he's saying, in response to your questions,
what would you say, AJ about such a loaded question? AJ,
(53:55):
what would you say about those that are saying in
the media that you're been down this year? What are
you going to say back to? Then? What he said
back to it probably wasn't wise. He said, well, I
guess Saquon's in the same boat because his stats are
down too. So immediately that turns into well AJ's bashing Saquon.
And see these reporters, the sickos, most of them a
(54:16):
radio guys. Yeah, most of them are radio guys. They're like,
he said it, Now, we get to take it and
run with.
Speaker 11 (54:23):
It, even though he was set up for failure from
the get go with with the way the question was phrased, Well,
he's got to be.
Speaker 6 (54:27):
Better, Like in that moment, I mean he does, he does.
Speaker 2 (54:29):
All you got to say, there is just one game
to time. We got to get back to the drawing.
Just be Belichick in that moment. John Fox had something
he said one time, and I think he probably learned
it from Parcels. Belichick was like this, don't ever let
him in.
Speaker 6 (54:41):
Yeah, don't ever.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
And as a media guy, you know, I get conflicted
about this because I love sound bites. I love sound
I love we need content, yes, but as a football guy,
and that's where my heart is. JB and Reg and
everybody here, like that's the great team concept, Like just
keep it in. How yeah handled the Patriots. They're doing
such a great. Look at Stephan Dick's Look how happy
(55:05):
he is right now? He's never been happy, right, not
a peep, right, not a word, not a word. Even
the Dolphins. That all they went. On the other hand,
the Dolphins, I think the problem was Chris career the GM,
I really do. I think McDaniel is respected among those players.
I think the GM pissed a lot of people off
(55:25):
getting rid of some of those players, a lot of
the players.
Speaker 7 (55:27):
And I didn't realize he had been there so long
as long as he has a long time. He was
there with the Flores Yeah, well yeah, yeah. And and
who was before the old Green Bay guy Jim oh
Philbin he was there with Oh my god, that goes
back in the like the mid twenty ten Yes.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
So I mean, who, yeah, they were probably time.
Speaker 7 (55:52):
So when you asked me earlier about, you know, McDaniel
being there, I got a feeling he woked with the
new gym coming in, you know how that goes. They
want to bring in their own guy. If they want
to go down, they want to go down with their
own guy. That's true, But it depends. I do think
it depends on how we play out the risk of
the season. Yeah, the owner does, like McDaniel, he does.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
He does, and the owner has a lot of well,
they have the ultimate power. But some owners are more
involved than other Stevens. Steven's so involved he lost draft
picks over it.
Speaker 7 (56:22):
I think he's backed off smartly. I think he's backed
off a little bit. I'm not a fan. I'm not
a fan, but it's gotten well. He's he's been a
lot quieter now nowadays.
Speaker 2 (56:33):
Guess who else has done that? David Tepper, Yes, with
the Panthers, just Tepper. Tepper learned finally how to own
I think the look. There were some moments that weren't
very good, you know, throwing a cup of water out
on fans, and these are all things you need to
like own up to, and obviously he has. But sometimes
you's got to hire good people, step back and let
(56:55):
them work. And that was a big part of the
problem early with Matt Ruhle. He was micromanaging every bit
that because that was his baby, that was his big project.
I'm going to hire the next Jimmy Johnson straight out
of college to be that one rare unicorn that has
no coaching experience in the pros and he takes a
team to championship level. It was never going to really work.
I think Tepper was humbled by that, and I think
(57:15):
Tepper's learned with now Dan Morgan running that football operations side,
and then Dave Canal is doing a nice job. Dan
Morgan's really the glue there because if you guys know
a little bit about Dan Morgan former linebackers for the Panthers,
played at University of Miami. You ever see him staring
to a camera, It's Mike Singletary psycho level. Dan is
a sweet guy too, but he sets boundaries, and I
(57:36):
think you know it takes guys time to learn how
to own it. Does Jerry Jones will never learn. I've
been thinking about it too.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
Four zero five four eight zero back after this year.
This is game on on one oh four nine Fox

There's been a big announcement for the Ellison Bradley turkey Fry.
(59:15):
Oh yeah, that's gonna be a miracle here every single year.
In fact, it's usually on a Tuesday. We had just
Jeff in studio with us yesterday that broke the news
that due to weather concerns for Tuesday, they're going to
move it to Monday.
Speaker 6 (59:26):
That makes sense.
Speaker 2 (59:26):
So you guys can check out Miracle Hill on Facebook,
check out Whistle one hundred, Ellis and Bradley Show on Facebook,
and of course iHeartRadio will all be out there at
some portion during the day to lend a hand. What's
just been a great cause and you look again. Full disclosure.
Bill Ellis's my dad, and he's my hero in this business,
my hero in life really, and it's one of his
great accomplishments along with Beth and the entire crew. It's
(59:49):
a real legacy for this entire station, especially Dad and
Beth Man. It's what you're remembered by in this business.
Not you know your ratings or you know I'm money.
Speaker 5 (01:00:00):
You made her hear.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
This is what your what you can do to reach
people and touch people. And I've been very blessed to
be a little small part of that. Miracle Hill Turkey
fright with us and Bradley. It's just a it's a
great event.
Speaker 6 (01:00:10):
Great people too, the people that come out and help.
Oh man, great turkey.
Speaker 5 (01:00:15):
Probably.
Speaker 6 (01:00:15):
I'm not gonna lie. It's the best for a good.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
Cost, so I tried. They occasionally will give me a
little simple tabeah, but that's like can you just can
you send one home with some Jeff ye, Jeff Breda, John,
come on, what's your dress?
Speaker 5 (01:00:32):
Carry you?
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
I would never Miracle Hill shout out to y'all. Just
a wonderful job. And uh thanks Beth and Bill and everybody.
Whistle one hundred for yeah, just doing something special for
those in our upstate community. Oh geezy, has it been
twenty for a while? It's been I believe twenty. I'll
go look this up, Bill and listen. If you're listening
(01:00:53):
out there, text you a little dad lad time. You
can call us on the hotline two four zero fifty forty.
And then I just want to make a little personal announcement.
We're going to be doing a live show on Monday.
I have made the executive decision to do the show
live on Monday, despite the fact that I've got about
fifty things going on that night. One of those things,
(01:01:14):
and it's going to be a lot of fun. I'll
be live from Charlotte, broadcasting remotely here. Falco will be
here as well. Yep, and the Panthers obviously have a
big Monday night game at San Francisco. Our iHeart partners
up in Charlotte, whom I work for as well, and
we cover the Carolina Panthers. We'll be hosting a draft.
I'm not a draft wow, get ahead of myself hosting
a Monday night party.
Speaker 6 (01:01:36):
You need any thinking about draft playoffs?
Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
That's just you know, it's November. I'm already thinking about
the draft. I'm not used to Monday night football playoff, right, Yes, something,
it's a Monday night football We Matter party. We're not
doing the draft yet. No, it's going to be a
clutch in Charlotte, which is right there on Cedar Nice.
We have some great guests out there, folks from Independence.
Harley Davidson will be out there as well, and so
(01:02:00):
I'll be doing game On from location there on Monday,
and then we're gonna have a good old time after
that with our friends from w r X up there
in Charlotte, and the Carolina Panthers. Might be a few
former players on our show, legends on our show. Yeah,
be cool like that. Man when we getting to Legett, well,
he'll be playing that night.
Speaker 4 (01:02:17):
I can't know.
Speaker 11 (01:02:17):
I mean obviously not that night, but I mean at
some point we gotta get We have to fill the
sound bank.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
We have too many connections between being right here an
affiliate of game Cock Athletics and and me a a
very small part and I'm trying to be humble here
of covering the Carolina Panthers for their flagship station. I'm
the pregame host. Certainly, between all of us, we can
get Xavier Legette to ride a horse up to the living.
Speaker 4 (01:02:41):
Floor on one.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
That only goes so far. Doesn't even help you in
this business, I promise you that, and I mean that
with all due respect. No, if Legette has ever to
come on this show, oh it's not going to be
a phone interview. No, I'm gonna ask Bruce Spade himself,
the director of pr for the Panthers, who is one
of my good friends. Can we work something out and
(01:03:11):
maybe I'll pay him where Xavier literally shows up to
our Richardson Street garage and there's a horse waiting for him,
and he comes into the building on horseback, into the
elevator and rides in the studio and does two hours
with us at that mic on a horse. It happened.
We'll even come to him if you we'll go to
(01:03:31):
damn Mullins. Yeah, we'll take the comrades with that's right.
You've seen the latest video of him after the big
win against I think it was at Lanta Green Bay.
Who's down there.
Speaker 5 (01:03:41):
I've seen that yet.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
I see you can't tell what's slop and what's real
these days with right, Yi, And yeah, that was real.
It was leget He was riding that said. Somebody was
like driving a truck filming it. Yeah. Yeah, he's gotta
be careful, man. He's in the middle of the season,
but it's fair Yeah, laged in Scataboo. That's the next
generation right there, Those are the next guys. We were
talking during break here back to football, So it's interesting
(01:04:05):
in the NFL. Obviously, this is a big college weekend two,
but not as big as next weekend will be, so
we're kind of pivoting back to NFL here. It's a
real changing of the guard type of season when you
look at the upper echelon of mostly the AFC. Now
it's an incomplete product as of right now. There are
still games to be played. The standings are still evolving,
and there will be a team or two at the
(01:04:27):
top that will flame out and probably lose three or four.
There will be a team, maybe it's Houston, maybe it's
Baltimore that emerges and rises from the ashes. Generally speaking, though,
here are the top contenders in the AFC right now.
Obviously the one seed is Denver, not out of nowhere,
but a little bit. Considering it's only year two of
Sean Payton, they're really putting together. The boat Nicks, the Patriots,
(01:04:50):
that's a JB's team. They've got nine wins. They're the
two seed. The Colts are the three seed. Steelers are
the four seed as usual, and bad right now for
a wildcard spot is Buffalo. They're the sixth seed. They're
only a half game up on Jacksonville for that last spot.
Houston is ahead of Kansas City in the wildcard standings.
(01:05:12):
Baltimore is tenth in the AFC right now in terms
of the entire stack. So, like, let's look at these
trio of teams that have emerged this year, like the
level of certainty we have about Denver being there for good,
Like I look at them as, yeah, they're here to
be a pain in the ass for Kansas City for
(01:05:33):
a while. It reminds me a little bit of what
New England and Buffalo are dealing with, because they've got
a defense that is young, they're great, They've got a
head coach that's done it and he's not quit anytime soon.
And bo Nicks is not perfect, but he's got enough
in the tank to do what he needs to do
with a team that's got a very good offensive line.
I feel like Denver and New England to me, are
(01:05:55):
more likely to stay in that driver's seat than Indy.
I'm not totally there with Indy yet. That's just me.
Speaker 7 (01:06:03):
And he looks good Man the jew Why I mean,
you know, I want to say it's the owner, but
you know she she's been doing.
Speaker 6 (01:06:10):
With Jonathan Taylor.
Speaker 2 (01:06:12):
That's what I'm concerned about. Yes, he is carrying them,
and he has got some miles on him. I al
surprised he's only twenty six. I thought he was like thirty.
But if that goes south, then he gets banged up
a little bit. Do you trust Daniel Jones isolated from
that because we've seen this story before with him in
New York. I love what they're doing. Their defense is
(01:06:35):
quietly very good. But I look at what New England
has fundamentally foundationally. I look at Denver's overwhelmingly good defense
and a quarterback that can be franchise esh and a
coach that's won a Super Bowl. Stichen is the guy
that's sort of still got to prove it to me.
I like him. But you got Rabes, you got Sean
Payton and Wall they have there in New England. Their
(01:06:56):
defense is great. I'm not knocking the Colts. I'm just saying,
look got for Houston because they're always going to be there.
With Stroud and Dimiico Jacksonville's all of a sudden a
factor now and you know, Tennessee will see what happens
with cam Moore. They're they're struggling right now. But then
we have no faith in the Steelers.
Speaker 6 (01:07:10):
Right well, there, I got faith in Steelers.
Speaker 11 (01:07:12):
I just you know, will they go into the Super
Bowl probably not, will they hit the playoffs?
Speaker 6 (01:07:16):
Probably? Will they lose?
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
What the Steelers need is about eight years of belt
ass that you just excuse me for the expression, no,
you're good. You need about eight years of BTA your
fan base, not you, but your fan base. You got
to go through the depths of it. I beg for it.
I wanted to bring Matt Ruhle back to the NFL
five on the steeling, make him the Steelers coaches for
(01:07:39):
seven years, seven years, and by that seventh year will
w j Z. It took seven years, and then you'll
know what it's like. And when you start winning again,
your yensers will be like, oh my god, we had
it so good. What happened? So give me a pat song.
Speaker 11 (01:07:59):
Spoiled babies to your point about the Colts though, talking
about the Steelers, Jonathan Taylor, they held him to what
under fifty yards and it was about as bad as
it could look. With Danny Dimes. They're trying to put
everything on his shoulders. That Colts team looked bad.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
And can you do that to the Patriots?
Speaker 11 (01:08:17):
I mean, it took us five turnovers to beat the
Patriots and they still almost like if.
Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
You take Travon Henderson out of the game, which teams
have died, right, Stevenson as well, Drake may has still
beaten them. Plus their defense is a cut about Denver.
They've won some close games, I'll be honest with yeah,
but there's not one thing you look at Denver and
say you got to take that away. They just flood
you with blitzes and zone dogs and everything they've got
this take Yeah, just going to carry them those boat nags.
(01:08:47):
I mean he's yes. These teams right now, Kansas City, Baltimore, Detroit,
they're all on the outside looking in the NFC and AFC.
We we talked about this the other day, Guys like JB.
I'll start with you, which one do you trust the
most by the end of this year to be there
(01:09:07):
and still standing in the playoffs in Kansas City just
by default? Is it Baltimore because of Lamar? Is it Detroit?
Because of Dan Campbell and you look a little bit
like him.
Speaker 8 (01:09:15):
I want to say Baltimore because Lamar Jackson is my
big time fantasy football quarterback, but probably Kansas City because
my homes and all the experience and read and all them.
But hey, I want to quote something here from your
other friend, Raggie. I'm the same way kind of because
New England's really good this year. But if we either
(01:09:38):
play Baltimore or Kansas City in the first round, I'm
gonna be like your friend Raggie and say, oh, man, man,
what can't be them?
Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (01:09:46):
I don't feel comfortable saying, hey, yeah, Baltimore, we got them.
Speaker 5 (01:09:49):
You know, It's like it makes me nervously.
Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
One of those teams will slip in the back door
and nobody will want to face them because they'll get
and you just keep waiting for Kansas City. We got
a good friend of ours, Jay, who works for good
Will Industry, big Chiefs fan. He's done some work with
us here on this station, and he's last call he
made to us, I think was last week. And I'm
not saying he's giving up on the season. It was
(01:10:13):
after their most recent loss.
Speaker 6 (01:10:15):
Was that not the beginning of it was.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Weeks.
Speaker 6 (01:10:21):
I think it was Monday.
Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
The weeks are blending together.
Speaker 5 (01:10:23):
It was a good call because I was listing really.
Speaker 2 (01:10:26):
Yeah, and he's always bringing very honest perspective about his team,
and he's sort of setting it up to where, you know,
not to convince us that it's going to be okay,
but sort of say, look, we might just not have
it this year. We forget sometimes that Brady didn't win
eight straight Super Bowls. There were periods of time as
a Patriots fan, j but you know it a Dolphins
(01:10:47):
fan over there with Reggie, you guys know that there
were I mean, he's one, they wanted three, they won
it four, and then it took him until what twenty fourteen.
That's a decade they went without winning it.
Speaker 1 (01:11:00):
Yea.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Now they were in it a couple of times and
Eli got the best of Tom. But look the schedule
ahead for Kansas City. I picked them to beat the
Colts this week. By the way, there's a just a
gut feeling about this is the get right game. But
if they lose to the Colts and they go five
and six, then they're at Dallas on a short week
for Thanksgiving. That's no picnic with what they're doing. Then
they're against the Texans on a Sunday night. That's brutal
(01:11:23):
in terms of what they can do to Mahomes in
terms of the pressure, their offensive line struggling. Still got
to play the Chargers again. Still got to play the
Broncos again. This is a must win for Kansas City.
This is it Dallas. It's in Dallassah, Thanksgiving. We always.
I can see them win that game. I could too,
I could. I could see that one going. I could
(01:11:44):
see these next two going for Kansas City. But they
have to at least split those two games in my opinion,
because the Texans, Let'll tell you something, when CJ comes back,
that's the one team I look at that's sitting there
in the wild card ish sniffing around mode. They're the
eight seed right now, so they're right outside looking if
they can just get in with ten or eleven wins.
I don't want any part of that team. I don't
(01:12:05):
want to see them. I don't want to play them.
That defense, it's a lot like Denver, but they're a
little worse than the record column. We'll touch on the
NFC with this discussion. We'll come back and look at
the standings and give you a simulation of who would
play whom Right now if the playoffs began tonight. It's
game on with the whole crew here. We're back after this.
Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
Game On with John Alice weekdays four to six, Fox
Sports up State.
Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
Oh yeah, we're heading into that part of the week
that is no longer the week. What is it, Rich,
It is the weekend, baby, the tones of Action Jackson,
who's been doing radio for many, many years years back
behind the mike. And that's complimentary, my friend, than I have.
Speaker 5 (01:13:33):
To say, Ax Jackson on mine.
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
That's right, Action Jackson, the host of the greatest show
right now going in terms of I don't even know
if the content is great. I'm sure it is. But
the name of the show once again.
Speaker 7 (01:13:47):
Is I'm co host of a very fun and an
innovative podcast called Cracker and Blacker with black good friend
Craig Deebo, who, by the way, Craig.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Well come on up and see us. Craig d bowl
another one of the many people in this business who
saved me from some some rotten moments that you encounter
along the way when you're young broadcaster. Craig when when
I encountered my first layoff and we all go through
this in radio. Craig was the first guy to call
me up and offer me work, and it was at
(01:14:22):
what used to be we talked about Earth FM. It
was before that, you know what it was before then
Spin and I found myself running the board for Dan Scott, yeah,
much like you were at one point for the Firm
and Athletic Network. And that's where I got the note Dan.
But on Friday nights, I ran like a Friday night
(01:14:43):
hits show where I played all the hits and it
was BPM dance music and the pastiest, whitest, creakiest, just
corneous bastard over here trying to sound cool and him.
But I just turned it into a bit and Craig
was so kind to, you know, say, come on in, man,
spend some hits. Yeah, keep the pipes fresh.
Speaker 4 (01:15:02):
It was.
Speaker 2 (01:15:03):
It was special and he paid me as much as
he could with the budget that we had at the time.
And Craig's good people man.
Speaker 7 (01:15:09):
Oh, he's great people man. And you know, it's pretty
much the same with me. You know, I was going
through what I was going through over across the street
over there. Yeah, and you know, looking down on feeling
down on my look and out of know where Craig goes, hey,
you know, looking forward traffic person, and I'm like traffic
and it was a perfect okay.
Speaker 2 (01:15:25):
And all he had to do is it's full time.
I'm like, what do I start? That was always the
devil's in the details with this business of ours. Well,
I just want to say to like Craig and everybody
like you go through those moments in any line of work,
whether it's what JB what you've been through in your
line of work. Trey's been in this business, but we've
(01:15:46):
done other things as well. We got to stick together. Man.
One thing I've learned from being basically in this business.
I was in diapers. I was running around the hallways
of w SC and Charlotte knocking the radio state off
the air when I was four years old, with the
general manager, Don Bell chasing me out.
Speaker 4 (01:16:06):
My dad.
Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
I remember him running in saying, son, what the hell?
I just want to push a button. But in this business,
it's such a performative business for some and this market.
We're so blessed because even those that we compete with,
like you're a good friend of ours, is facts and
(01:16:27):
childrens who stay on there Clemson. We have crossover friends,
the guys over at the other stations that that we
compete with directly. They're good people, and I think there
are some that have come through this business that you know,
there are those that are having to count beans and
make sure that you meet standards, and you know that's
part of the business. You don't take it personal. But
I don't know of a lot of people in this
(01:16:48):
market that I wouldn't sit down and have a beer with, man,
because they're just good people. You brought up Heidi Achin
for example. Yeah, it's legendary radio personality from the sweetest
person that you could ever meet. I saw hiding at
one of our road shows last year. We were out
there the Jingles all American tailgate shows, the one in
Fountain End. Okay, get the venue, but my favorite venue
(01:17:08):
of all time was that that place in Fountain and
I got to look up the name. They had this
beautiful terrace in the back and they had this you know,
uh sort of field turf laid out and kids are
out playing. All of a sudden, Hidi and her significant
other Jeff, come walking up and he gives me like
this big hug from behind him, like, oh my god,
time capsule. Just so many great people and Lauren her
(01:17:28):
daughter that I worked with. But you mentioned Craig. Craig
worked in this building for a long time. And just
a quick story before we get out here. I worked
in sales back in the mid two thousands and I
was very appreciative Bill McMartin shout out to you gave
me a chance, and it just wasn't something I was
particularly good at.
Speaker 7 (01:17:43):
You know, I just the only thing I haven't done
in radio sales, and you know, you do a little
bit of both now when you do your own thing
on the radio sports.
Speaker 2 (01:17:50):
But I used to like go hide out upstairs in
the studio with Craig after to just try to play
radio for a little bit without feeling. But we've got
a great staff here sales and programming, and you guys
have been great. JB thanks for coming in, man, and
just come on by any time.
Speaker 5 (01:18:08):
Bud, Hey, Thanks John, Troy, I've enjolled it, man, It's
been a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
And for Trey Paul Walnuts Falco as always. Congratulations New
Car Today show hop In hop In Yeah Coach. Years
ago were having a Belichick Night on the town. Here,
let's go to a cheer con. We're on the Gentlemen's Club.
(01:18:37):

(01:18:59):
the way, remote our cast coming up Monday five to
seven pm. Richmond's back on Monday three pm as well
for our good friend JB. Brown for Tray, Paul Walnuts Falco,
I'm John Nillis and I'm gonna let Action Jackson take
us home. What is it baby? It's the weekend, baby,
come on, get it to me one more time. It's
(01:19:19):
the weekend, babe, it one more time. Hey, it's the
weekend baby. On Monday
