Speaker 1 (00:00):
We'll bring in our special guest first. Though. He works
for PFF dot com. You can find him uh just
non stop doing great work on the college football scene
and also does a great job cover in the NFL.
It's our good friend Max Chadwick. What's up, big boy?
Go guys, it's good man. Missed talking to you for
the last couple of months here, but it's good to
catch up because we're getting closer. Have you unboxed and
(00:22):
played a sports? College football? Let's start with it.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, I actually just bought it yesterday. I started my
dynasty with the Delaware Blue Hen. Gosh, I got off
to Colorado yesterday, but hopefully we bounced back for a.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Soon Delaware Blue Hens. All right, I think we talked
to you last year. You always start at the bottom.
You can start with somebody obscure and work your way up.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, you can't pick Alabama and that the new FBS
schools and then working out from there.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
You can't do that. Well, Max, let's talk some real
ball as we're getting into you know, SEC media days
and obviously a team of interest out in these neck
of the woods. The South Carolina game Cocks come in
with a lot of promise. They did lose a lot
of talent to the NFL last season, but you know,
you've got a quarterback in the North's Sellers and still
some very valuable pieces on that defense. How do you
(01:11):
assess what they have in their road to a possible
SEC championship? Could it be that year for them?
Speaker 2 (01:18):
It could be. Yeah, it's a really good SEC. I
think they have a really good roster around, but there's
still a lot of question marks with that roster right now.
I think it starts with the offensive line. It's been
a unit that's held back that program in each of
the last two years, I would say. And as much
as I like Norris Sellers and Nick Harber on that
offense and how much potential they both have, they're both
still relatively raw, especially Nick Harber right now, I would
(01:40):
say too, so listen to have some really good pieces
and Dylan Stewart from the best players in the country,
I think an edge rusher, but they lost a lock
from that defense. I'm I don't think South Carolina will
win the SEC this upcoming year, but they could absolutely
contend for a comptable playst But I think I mean, you.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Look at our friends at Clemson. The Tigers obviously with
Kate cleb Nick back in the mix, with an offensive
line that's built to win right now. Obviously you've got
some great young receivers on the perimeter, and then you've
got this defensive front ye a little bit, with a
secondary you can't sleep on that is built to be
a championship contender. I feel like coach Tweeney has the
tools this year to get them back to where they
(02:18):
were a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, I agree with that. I actually, you know, and
I'm to spoiler right now, but I think I will
be packing Clemson to win the national title in twenty
twenty five. So a big fan of what coach Sweeney
has in that roster. In my opinion, they had the
best quarterback in America and k Klubnick, a top three
receiving corps in the country, a top ten offensive line
in the country, and then one of the best defenses
in America. Was the best defensive line in the country
(02:41):
in my opinion too. So Clempston's loaded everywhere. Like the
only position I really have a question mark at is
running back. I would say right now concerning their progress,
are a true freshman at running back in Gideon Davison,
but even he was a top five running back coming
out of high school too. Right, so Clempton's loaded everywhere,
I think right now, and what should be an easy,
easiest of the four Power four conferences, Clemson should roll
(03:04):
their way to the Agency title and I think they
should maybe win a national title this year too.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Max Chadwick Pro Football Focus is our guest here, given
some takes on the game Cocks and the Tigers. As
we get closer to the college football season, let's shift
gears to the NFL here. And obviously you have a
heavy focus on these young quarterbacks that are coming out
next year, but we had some come out this year,
and the most entertaining room maybe in the league, besides
(03:30):
the Giants, I guess fascinating room is the Browns. What's
gonna happen at the end of the day there, do
you think? I mean, you've got Joe Flacco holding down
the Ford as the veteran Dylan Gabriel, should Er Stewart
or should her Sanders, I should say, And obviously can
you pick it? What what happens there? Who starts? And
is it gonna end well for any of these guys?
Speaker 2 (03:53):
I mean your guests as good as mine right now.
I think that is just such a wide open battle
right now. Listen, I was a huge fan of shred
Standers coming out of the draft. I actually had him
really up there with More as the best quarterback prospect
in the draft. I told them was a coin foot
between two of them, So getting him in the fifth
round was a steal, right So, even though I know
there's some obviously offield factors that came into play there,
(04:13):
he's a really talented quarterback. I think he's the most
unted one in that building right now, So he might
start a lot, I think as a rookie. But it's
weird though. It's weird situation because you draft Dylan Gabriel
on the third round before you draft to shreg Standers,
So then how does that kind of you know, dynamic
work out there. And listen, even no matter who starts
a quarterback, it's not a very good offense they're gonna
be playing in either. That offensive line is really getting
(04:35):
beat up and getting older and not as good anymore.
Receiving corp, in my opinion, is probably the worst in
football right now, one of the worst I've seen in
recent years, and then that running back give you know,
two rookies is gonna lead the charge right now, and
Quinn Shawn Judkins and Dylan Sampson. Judkins has just arrested,
you know, a couple of days ago too, right, so
that offense is a is a disaster right now in
my opinion, A big reason why I think Cleveland couldn't
(04:57):
be the worst team in football this year.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
They might be. You go to another team that's trying
to get off the mat here, and that's the Giants,
and Jackson Dart with Brian Daboles, got some decisions to make.
You have the incumbent Russell Wilson, you have the entertainer
Jameis Winston, who you know, does a lot of great things,
but it also gets you in trouble with the bad
balls he throws. And then Jackson Dart obviously is their
first round pick. Do you think they should just roll
(05:22):
it out for Dart week one and go in that
direction or do do you feel like you need to
go with Wilson for a few weeks and then sort
of move him into the lineup progressively.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
I think you have to go with Russell Wilson initially,
at least listen I know, you know, I mean listening
to the owner of John Mary even came out and said, Hey,
Brian Dable the head coach, and Joe Shane the general manager,
they're fighting for their lives right now. Right this is
really a make or break yere. They both could be
fired if they don't improve, and quarterback is the number
one priority for them. So you start Russell Wilson for
as long as you can. If Russell Wilson's playing well,
(05:53):
then you keep them in there obviously, but he's not,
then you put Jackson Darton layer in the season. But
you have to go Russell Wilson out there initially. In
my opinion, Russell Wilson show he was at least an
average ish quarterback last year for the Steelers. The Giants
need that right now, right, you don't know. I think
Jackson darr I would not have taken him in the
first round. I think he's still a good bit of
way before becoming a franchise quarterback. He's not ready to
(06:15):
start week one, I would imagine. So I think Russell Wilson,
you have to play in week one, playing for as
long as you can unless he's really holding the team back,
and then maybe give Jackson darr a shot if he
is holding the team back or gets hurt or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Max Chadwick, pff, if you insulate him with a thousand
tight ends. How well does Will Howard play for the
for the Pittsburgh Steelers? Is he the next Big Bin,
the next Josh Allen. I keep hearing these weird rumblings
that he's like the next great quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yeah. I like Well Howard a lot. You know, I
thought he was a guy coming out that could have
gone higher than than where he was taking. I believe
in the sixth round of the draft, right so I
thought he could have got higher than that. I don't
know if it's gonna be a franchise quarterback for Pittsburgh.
They're really going to ride out this Aaron Rodgerson as
long as they possibly can. But then I think after that,
you know, I don't know. Man's Steeriers are kind of
stuck in limbo right now because the roster is good
(07:05):
for them for them to like really be terrible and
get a top quarterback prospect, but it's not good enough
to really compete for a Super Bowl. So they're just
really stuck in limbo right now. I think they really
got to commit to the rebuild, which Mike Tomlin will
never do, and get a new quarterback that way. But
who knows, maybe they trade up in the draft. It
should be a really good quarterback class next year, espcially
if ars Man Declaire's maybe they trade up to get
(07:26):
one of those guys. But as of right now, they're
really stuck in limbo. I don't think will Howard zoom
long term master at quarterback right now.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
No, I don't think he is either.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Max.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
It's way too early. But this is what we do
here on this show, looking to next year's draft. These
top five top ten quarterback prospects that will be there
in the first round that the Steelers are potentially going
to trade up for. Who do you think would be
the best fit for the Steelers for the scheme that
they're trying to run.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Oh good question, honestly. I mean, if you can get
an arch Banding, you get arch Manning. I don't think
you're worry about the scheme, right It's like that you
get a guy like that, and I know, you know,
it's not a lot of tape on him just yet,
but he's a Manning, who can run. Honestly, that's all
you just know about him.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
So that's right, you got him, you got.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Kate Club Nick Club I'm a huge fan of too.
Drew Aller I think is gonna be a much better
pro than he is in college, and he's still a
great college quarterback. I just think he's kind of getting
held back a lot of times that Penn State offense.
Garrett Nuzmar is a gun slinger that's got to kind
of rain in a little bit, and he's still very talented.
Sam Levit could really emerge the Arizona State quarterback and
become a first round pick two. I think k Club
(08:31):
Nick those are the guys I think are most likely
going to be in the draft next year. I could
actually marsh Maning probably won't declaire next year, if I
have to to imagine it, So I would say either
Kate Club Nick or Drew Aler or the two guys
I'd be circling if I'm a Sewers fan.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Right now, Max, We've been talking a lot about the
rookie quarterback class from last year, and of course we
know the JJ McCarthy verdict is still out, but a
lot of people really like his game from Michigan. I'm
fascinated by Michael Pennix, and we saw this chronicled on
Quarterback Season two on Netflix. At least I took a
good glimpse at that this week. And I don't know
(09:03):
if we can fully trust that Pinnix is the guy yet.
I mean, we like some of the high level throws
he's made, but there seems to be sort of a
narrative out there well that that quarterback class is six
of six. So certainly go Kanna will do great things
with McCarthy. I think a couple guys are sure fire guys,
Jade and Daniels leading that list, and I like bo
Nix's production, but I think we need to see a
(09:24):
little more from Pinnix until we crown him.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Yeah, I agree, it was it was very small sample
size last year, but it was very good. I will
say that too. He looked much better than Kirk Cousins,
and honestly, I think Kirk Cousins kind of shot. I
think it's over for him, you know, with all the
injuries he's had, how old he is too. It's been
a great career for him, and you know his he
and his agent are probably to go down to the
Sports Agency Hall of Fame for the amount of money
(09:48):
he's made him in this contract, lot of guaranteed money too,
But I think I think it's kind of over for him.
I would be surprised if Michael Pennix has, you know,
ever taken off the starting lineup cour kerk. I think
it's kind of over for Kirk Cousins as a starter
in Atlanta, and I'm excited to watch Michael Pastor and
a show. I think you can get a lot better
with Rake London and all those weapons they have. Bejon
(10:09):
Robinson in a pretty good old line too. Pennix, I
think is just starting off as a franchise quarterback there.
And like I said, it was a small samplesof last year,
but I was really really encouraged by what he showed
last year too.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
One more for you, Max. Max Chadwick PF dot Com
is our guest here on Game On look at Right
Up the Road eighty five here with the Carolina Panthers
and what they did last year with Bryce Young. And
we've talked about Bryce quite a bit with you on
this show. Back half of that year, they were competing
with great teams and Bryce was a big part of that.
His game elevated down the stretch. They add McMillan from Arizona,
(10:42):
that they keep their O line together, which is a
big deal, and they've had some depth at running back
along with a very good player in Chewba Hubbard. Do
you see this team taking that leap possibly and getting
to nine to ten wins and competing with Tampa or
do you still have question marks, notably about the defense.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah, I think it's still enough question marks defensively to
say they're not gonna win the NFC South next year.
But I, like you said, I was really encouraged by
what Bryce Young showed us in his second in the
second half of his second year. Really, they have a
relatively easy schedule. I think it's the fifth hardest in
our power rankings right now, the fifth easiest in our
Power wrekings right now. So I think I think a
(11:23):
seven to win season is certainly plausible for Carolina next year,
maybe even a little bit better than that too. Brycetalever
was sicks next step, but getting in center of mcmill and,
I love that, and then getting two guys and Nick
Gorton and Prince de Montiel and who I thought both
could have gone in the first round. I wouldn't have
bat an eye either. That's a great haul in the
second round too, too. So I loved what, uh what
(11:43):
Caroline did this offseason, and it's just a matter of Okay,
can Bryce Young keep expanding on what he showed in
the second half of the year or was that kind
of a fluke seven or eight games for which I
don't think it was for him last year.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Yeah, I thought it was good stuff. And then we
just have to see if that defense can pull together
and get better. They did do well in the draft there,
and Derek Brown comes back healthy and you hope for
Carolina fans that equals more wins. Next Chadwick PFF dot com,
let's promote what's going on right now. I see a
lot of these YouTube videos dropping right now promoting conferences.
Let's get into it, man.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah, so on the people of Constable show. Actually, right
before you guys called me, we just finish up a
over three hour show going over every single Big ten
team heading into the twenty twenty five season, giving a
full like ten minute preview for every single one of
the eighteen teams. Nice, and then we did that for
a Big ten. We did it last week for the
SEC two, next week the Big twelve the week after
(12:34):
about the ACC and of course Notre Dame two. So
every single one of the sixty eight Power four teams
is getting their own in depth preview kind of biggest strength,
biggest weakness, quarterback breakdown. Start off as a player breakdown,
start a defensive player breakdown, and on their bottom line, Look,
what are you second out of the program this year?
What's they're over under for the win total? Kind of
betting that too, yet going over every single one of
(12:54):
the sixty eight Power four teams and what we're doing
PFF right now.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Awesome stuff. Next Chadwick Pro football folk, because you'll go
follow his work. He's great. Max be well Man, we'll
talk to you as the season opens up.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Man, Thanks, appreciate you guys,
