Speaker 1 (00:03):
All right, welcome back man. As we get you set
for another big college football season, and in fact, we're
twenty days away from the opener of a game. Cox
taken on Virginia Tech to talk about that and much
more about his team coming up this season. It's the
head coach of the game Cox, Shane Biemer. Shane, welcome
back to the Show Man.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
It's great to be back. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Oh it's always man. We're the Upstates home for Gamecock Athletics.
You can hear all the games right here on one
O four nine Fox Sports Upstate. And Shane, I have
to ask you about another medium, it's Netflix. Who would
have thought this is something we'd be talking about in
the year twenty twenty five any given Saturday. What was
that like being not only a big part of this series,
but the game Cox were the biggest part, it looks like,
(00:45):
of this whole series on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah, we were. It was a It was a good
working relationship with Netflix and their team. You know, they
were respectful of many boundaries we set up, but we
really didn't have any because with our program, we don't
have anything to hide. We're not one way when the
cameras are on and one way when the cameras are off.
(01:08):
It was a good experience and last season doing that
ton of exposure for our program. The amount of recruits
that have reached out to us, either guys that we
have been recruiting or guys that you know, we weren't
recruiting because they didn't have much of an interest in US.
Now all of a sudden ore reaching out to us
and have an interest in South Carolina. So I think
the feedback has been great and everything that we wanted
(01:29):
to get out of it we have. I feel like,
and time will tell. It's still in the early stages,
and encourage your listeners that haven't watched it yet to
tune in and watch it because I thought they did
a really good job, not just with us, but showing
all the teams that were featured.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
It's a must watch for SEC football fans fans in general.
Coach Saint Biemer is our guest here on the Engles
Hotline and coach obviously let's dive right into the quarterback position.
Leonora Seller has been just an outstanding story in terms
of his growth and development with your program, and when
you look at his game over the past few years,
he rises to the occasion in some of the biggest moments.
(02:05):
Just talk about how this quarterback has matured and grown
under you and your staff there.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, I mean, it's been very, very natural. You give
him credit. He's worked really, really hard, and people forget
how young he is. His only his third year in
college football. It's only his second season as a starter.
You know, you think about how much his life has
changed just in the last year that you know, last year,
at this time, not many people outside of maybe the
state of South Carolina knew about him. And now he's
(02:33):
a household name across the country and as one of
the best players in college football. So his his world
has changed, There's no question about it. But the thing
that I'm proud of and have great respect for is
just he hasn't changed. He's the same person. His humility,
his work ethic, his his competitive spirit, his poise, all
those things you just alluded to, we still see every
(02:53):
day on and off the field. And he's worked really
really hard to improve as a quarterback since last season,
and his team mates around him have also.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Coach Shane Beemer is our guest. Shane, I've had the
fortune of being up close and covering the Carolina Panthers
for Ihart for a few years now. So the name
Mike Shula rang a bell when I saw him on
your staff. And the connection I make, obviously, and you
know you're the football guy, not me, is his ability
in the past to work with guys like Cam Newton
bring the best out in a game where a guy
has a dual threat. Just talk about the arrival of
(03:25):
coach Shula and how he's been working together with your
quarterback there.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, he's been great since he got here. Before the
twenty four season, we had an opening on our staff
and Mike's name was brought to me in February of
twenty twenty four, and first to say, would you have
an interest in him being a part of your staff,
I'm like, are you freaking kidding me? Yeah, because when
(03:50):
you think about it, he's overqualified for the position because
of his experiences. But that's what attracted me to him
last year, knowing that we were going to have a
new quarterback last season, having somebody in that room with
film like coach Shula that has played the position in
the SEC, has coached the position in college and the NFL,
(04:13):
and then he's been a head coach. So he's somebody
that I can lean on and bounce things off of
because he's been in my chair. But then, just as
you said, the quarterbacks that he had been around, whether
it be Cam Newton and Charlotte, or Daniel Jones with
the New York Giants or Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills,
He's been around a lot of quarterbacks like that and
has brought so much to you know, not just our offense,
(04:36):
but he's made our program better and that's been a
great relationship. It was last season when he was working
closely with Lenoris and our other quarterbacks, and then obviously
now that he is the offensive coordinator in quarterbacks coach,
it's been even better.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
And you look on the defensive side of the ball,
coach Shane Beembers our guest here on the Engles sideline.
Obviously you lose some guys to the NFL, and that's
a badge of honor, I would imagine. I'll get to
the NFL side in a minute. But Dylan Stewart on
the bed Nearick watch list, just talk about what a
remarkable young man this is in terms of not only
his football IQ but some of his traits on the
field are just remarkable.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, he's he's super talented. I mean, there's some pretty
cool moments in practice where you know, Leonoris maybe you know,
head to hit if you will. Again, stillan where Dylan
unfortunately may beat one of our offensive tackles in pass
rush and then you know it's him and he's got
an opportunity. We don't let Lenoris get hit in practice necessarily,
(05:31):
but you know, you think about that matchup Dylan and Lenoris,
and you're minded, you got two really good players right there.
But they're great players obviously, they're they're they're surrounded by
a lot of great players. And that's what excites me
is is Dylan came in last year as a true
freshman and did some really special things. Now he's a
year older and he should be better. He understands what
(05:52):
college football is like. He realizes that, you know, playing
a twelve game season in eight sec games is a
lot of wear and tear on your body and how
you got to take care of yourself on and off
the field. But he's worked hard and improved and then
we've got to be great around him as well. He
was fortunate that he had somebody on the opposite side
of him last year in Kal Kinnard, who was the
(06:13):
SEC Defensive Player of the Year. And we've got capable
guys returning as well, and we need them to be
at their best and then obviously Dylan to be great
as well.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
We talk about the National Football League, and obviously that's
a big part of what I do here with iHeartRadio
is covering this league, particularly the Carolina Panthers, and I
spoke with Rico Dwell, who's a game cock Colum. I
saw J. C. Horn last week at camp, and I
saw Bam Martin Scott at FanFest taking back a pick six.
What kind of pride do you take in keeping an
eye on these guys, keeping in touch with these guys,
(06:46):
because it's got to be a badge of honor, like
I said, as a head coach, not only to build
a program getting yourself into a mix of a playoff
berth potentially this year, but also looking at what you
put out there in terms of NFL talent.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah, I appreciate that you're saying that, and it's really
special because all those guys you're talking about are you know,
guys that either came in day one with me like
Bam Scott or you know, guys that we brought in
for a season. But I'm not able to watch a
ton of a ton of preseason football. But I did
(07:20):
get home the other night on I think it was
Thursday night late, the Raiders were playing the Seahawks on
NFL Network, and I watched a little bit and you're
able to see Nicky man Worri and Taka Hemingway go
up against each other on the Raiders and the Seahawks.
And then Friday night, I got home in time to
see a little bit of the Panthers and Browns game
(07:42):
was on television here locally, and was able to see
all of the game cocks that are in in Charlotte.
You mentioned Bam specifically, and then Gage Larva Dan who
had a touchdown in that game. And then Saturday, we
had a scrimmage Saturday night. So on Saturday afternoon, I
had the TV on and it was the it was
I want to say, the Bills and the Giants were on,
(08:04):
and that's TJ. Sanders and O'Donnell Fortunes. So I mean
those are all guys that were on our team last season.
And then yesterday I'm sitting at home late last night
and I get a text message from Dale Vonn Campbell
and he sent me a picture of I think it
was six guys that were on our team either last
year or the year before that were a part of
the Chargers and Saints' games. So any head coach takes
(08:25):
great pride in that. I do as well anybody that
you know, when they come here, you want them to
have a great experience. You want them to you know,
be successful on the field and win a lot of games,
get their degrees, graduate from Carolina and then have a
chance to go on to the next level and pray,
play professionally. So to see those guys be able to
accomplish those things, that's really cool and something that as
(08:45):
a head coach I'm really proud of.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Yeah, coach, I think the last touchdown of Week one
was Rocket Sanders hitting the edge and finding the pylon
for the Chargers. So just so many game cocks making
an impact in the NFL and certainly fighting for jobs.
Right now, let's talk about what comes up in about
three weeks. It's the opener against Virginia Tech. Take us
behind the curtain a little bit and scout this opponent
out Is this a big time opening game for the game.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Cocks here, No, it is. You're talking about a Virginia
Tech team that last season, you know, I want to
say they had a handful might have been six, like
one score losses. They had opportunities to win games and
there are a few plays away from being a you know,
eight or nine win team. And this is a top
(09:28):
twenty matchup to kick off the season. So they got
a lot of guys back, and we've got great respect
for their program. And season openers are always tricky in
college football because one, you don't get a preseason game
or exhibition against another team, so you really, you know,
you have an idea about your team, but you really
don't know because you've been practicing against yourself for an
(09:48):
entire month. But then the other thing is there's just
there's so much new every season with every team because
of the transfer portal. Virginia Tech's got a lot of
new players in key position that we don't that weren't
averaging Attech last year. And then what makes it, you know,
extra challenging this year getting ready for them, is is
they've got two new coordinators and neither of their their
(10:12):
offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator, coordinator. We're even in college
football last season, so you've really got to got to
got to go way back and research their history and
where all they've been and what they like to do
and and you know that makes it a challenge. But
but I'm excited as a player, coach, staff member. But
you know, you want to get out there and compete
(10:33):
and to have an opportunity to compete on national television
only Game one Atlanta Sunday afternoon, Labor Day weekend. It'll
be it'll be awesome, and our guys are really excited.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Yeah, needless to say, the secret is out about the
South Carolina game Cocks and the head coach is Shane Biember,
of course, and he's joining us here on the Engles sideline. Coach,
we wish you all the best this year and we're
looking forward to watching this team.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Man, appreciate chat. Thanks for having me on
