Speaker 1 (00:00):
Two day season here on Game ad As, we bring
in some insiders to help us preview all thirty two
NFL teams. And look what we're starting with here, an
old buddy of ours who's been look been around the block,
doing a lot of great work covering the New York
Jets team that has had a fascinating few years and
they're looking to break that playoff drout this year, something
we know about here in Carolina. It's our buddy, Paul

(00:22):
Esden Junior. Paul, how you doing, Bud Well.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Fascinating is probably not the f word I would choose
to describe the last couple of years of the New
York Jets, but I respect their creativity.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Yeah, yeah, you know, I'd like to say what I
want to say on this air, but FCC compliance is important. Paul,
I understand there's been some PTSD with the Jets fan
base out there. Let's start a little bit into that,
especially when it relates to the last couple of years.
I'm fascinated to catch up and get your perspective with

(00:54):
what happened with Aaron Rodgers. Obviously with the big signing,
the Achilles tear was catastrophe thick last year played some
decent football statistically, still had some limitations in terms of
the deep ball. Was it pretty apparent towards the end
of the season that they were going to move in
a different direction from your perspective.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
You know, it's hard to say that because obviously, you know,
there was all the changes. Robert Solow has fired after
Week five as a head coach, so Jeff Ulbrick wrote
out the rest of the season as the interim. Joe
Douglas was fired about midway through the season, and then
we had an interim in Phil Savage. So it's hard
to say whether or not you had a good perspective
of who it was going to. Because there was early
rumors that the Jets could pursue a Mike Grabel. Perhaps

(01:35):
that was the first head coaching interview that he made,
and a lot of people speculated, oh, Mike Rabel, a
guy who's been around the block. He and Aaron Rodgers
could be on the same respect level, so maybe there
was a path for him to stay. But when Aaron
Glenn was chosen as the head coach, there did seem
to be a vibe of Aaron Glenn's a no nonsense guy.
Aaron Rodgers brings a lot of extra curricular activities to

(01:58):
the table. Those two may not be a mess, and
that became abundantly clear in early February after the Jets
brought him into town and told him to his face
that it wasn't going to work out. So quite frankly,
just to go back to sort of what you said
about the crazy couple of years, it was kind of
an identity crisis of the Jets. The Jets thought that

(02:19):
they were a quarterback away, so make the aggressive trade
for Aaron Rodgers. Push all the chips in the middle
of the table. Last two years come up empty, and
now they're going and as completely opposite of a direction
as you can with a quarterback fifteen years younger, which
not often you can pull out that statistic. So now
we're going in a brand new direction with just a field.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
And speaking of that quarterback, Paul, you're talking about justin fields,
and that's a big change in terms of not only
just the age gap, but the style of play. Let's
talk about that position. What are your expectations for fields
And given the fact that one of the underrated receivers
in this league, Garrett Wilson, was just given the big contract,
Can he develop into what we thought he could be

(03:00):
out of Ohio State? And is this his last chance
to do so?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Do you think a lot of great questions built in there?
I will start off with, do we believe that justin fields,
the Ohio State version can still be tapped into this
Jets coaching staff believe so. Aaron Glenn has said that
throughout the offseason. Shortly after signing him, they immediately crowned
him to go all Dennis Green. They crowned him, Yeah,

(03:24):
made him the quarterback. They didn't have to do a
competition a pony who gaycy competition at Tyro Taylor. That
was unnecessary. They immediately crowned him. They believe in him.
Tanner Ringstrom was hired as the offensive coordinator again at Detroit.
Carry over with Aaron Glenn. He's never been an offensive
coordinator at the NFL level. Also, if you you know,
sort of look at what he did with Detroit. Jared
Goff not quite the first person I think of when

(03:46):
I'm like fleet of footb can't give me a definition
for that one. At Jared Goff is normally not the
first name that jumps up on the BINGO card, but
the Jets believe that having a guy like Justin Fields,
who I'm just going to say it is bluntley as
I can. The Jets in their history and this dates
back to nineteen sixty, have never had a quarterback like
this in their history with his ability from a mobility standpoint.

(04:09):
The single season rushing record for a New York Jets
quarterback is actually Al Duou in nineteen sixty Wow, when
the Jets are still the New York Titans. So we're
going back quite a way to get that hole from
that perspective. So yeah, long story short, Justin Fields are
just different. And I was just speaking with espnnfo in
Cider Jeremy Fowler over the weekend, had him on the show,

(04:31):
and he said, you can make a strong argument that
this Jets team is the best situation that Justin Fields
has ever had. Obviously he started off in Chicago, he
was with Pittsburgh last year. The Jets offensive line is
the reason for optimism for Fields and really the rest
of the team. The Jets believe they really have a
top ten offensive line in football. They'll have to prove

(04:52):
that on paper or on the field of course, coming
in but yeah, Justin Field just brings a different level
to this team, and they seem pretty excited to quote
a quote, let him play quarterback. And the Jets seem
like they know something the rest of the league doesn't.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Paul, I'm a Steelers fan, so I got to watch
a lot of Justin that It's okay, we're a little
bit of the same company today.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Looks like it looks like it looks at medieval times.
I don't know what the hell those things are.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
They're awful, But I did get to see Justin Fields
last year. The big thing I noticed with Justin Fields
a lot of the pre snap things that aside going
into this season, what is he going to have to do?
I guess to me, it looks like the way I
view it, I don't think this. The Jets are really
ruling out drafting a quarterback next year, so I guess

(05:40):
it's twofold. Is there anything that Justin Fields can do
this year to kind of stop that from happening? Secondly,
is there a quarterback that you see next year that
would be a really good fit for the Jets? Obviously,
they tried the Aaron Rodgers thing that didn't work out.
They went for a veteran they're trying somebody a little
bit younger with Justin Fields, who's more of a rushing
kind of dual threat quarterback. What is that secret sauce?
What is he ingredient that the Jets are missing to

(06:01):
try and get over that hump other than just it's
just bad luck.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
This is sort of a weird line to draw on
the sand for Justin Fields, but it's simple, don't let
the Jets have a top ten pick in the draft,
because if you do, and this is a quarterback driven league,
but like, if Justin Fields is good, I imagine the
Jets are not in a position to take a quarterback
unless there's some trade ups that are you if he's terrible, Well,
I guess the answer to the question is there. The

(06:27):
Jets are drafting a quarterback in the first round. So
the mission's pretty simple for Justin Fields. Don't suck enough
where the Jets have one of these premier picks in
this draft that is supposedly supposed to be a quarterback
rich So I think that's the line for Justin Fields.
The Jets made this sort of calculated move here giving
Justin Fields a two year deal, so if he pops

(06:48):
after one year, they still have him under contract, basically
the rights to negotiate a long term deal if they
believe he was the guy, and if he's awful, like
the Jets can get out of the deal with a
minimal financial restrict So it sort of worked out best
for all parties. Now, the odds say that Justin Fields
is not going to be the guy. This is his
third team in three years. It seems unlikely that the
light bulb will finally go off, but hey, miracles happen everywhere.

(07:11):
The Geno Smith, Sam Darnolds, I don't know why you
continue to name former Jets quarterbacks, but there it is
on the list, so you know, those are guys that
come up. But in terms of a quarterback to identify,
you know, if I go down in your guys, is
the South Carolina my own stomping ground shot out Somerville,
South Carolina out there in the universe. Yeah, you know,
Kde Clubnick, get a little Clemson action. But again, here's

(07:35):
the thing that you are kind of dueling things here.
Any of these quarterbacks are going to mention our top
five picks, which would then obviously mean that the Jets
would have to have another horrific season. And they've had
thirteen of the last fourteen years have had losing seasons.
So I think Jets fans are hoping that, you know,
they're sort of due, you know, in twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Five, Paul, how has that been? I mean, you've been
front and center covering this team. You obviously have a
great affinity for this franchise. You know, I've been doing
the same for the Panthers since nineteen ninety five, and
in the drought for us runs back to twenty seventeen.
What has it been fifteen years now?

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Right?

Speaker 1 (08:10):
For the Jets? How do you no matter, how do
you cope with it? But you know how it is
when you work with fans, You're you're engaging with fans.
What's the pulse like with Aaron Glenn coming in? Is
there a sense that it's finally time to maybe turn
it into high gear? Is there some resentment towards the owner?
I would imagine what's the sense among Jets fans and

(08:32):
what's the sense among you? Paul?

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Well, the good news is is that you know, they've
developed payment options for therapy, so it's become more affordable
five So I think you know, options, optionality is always
wonderful here in twenty twenty five, you know it. It
sort of depends on which waters you swim in. For
the Jets fan base, the older fans have battle scars

(08:56):
that they do talk about weekly with their therapists and talk.
But some young fans just haven't been hurt enough so
that after a year ends, they're like, no, no, this
is the year for sure, I could totally see it.
Now they try to, you know, start getting a little
higher register. They start to sell themselves on the idea
that this could be different. So I think that's sort

(09:16):
of the line between, you know, both of these kind
of ideologies here. But to your point, one winning season
in the last fourteen years that was twenty fifteen, and
even that one, you go, ooh, ten and six, that
sounds great. They missed the playoffs that year and lost
in epic fashion in the final game of that season.
In twenty fifteen, Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets quarterback for a

(09:38):
temporary period of time, through three picks in the fourth
quarter against the Buffalo Bill's and former Jets head coach
tricks Ryan all the juicy revenge there where. The Jets,
even despite having a ten win season, missed the playoffs,
so that sort of a misery continued year. What Aaron
Glenn is trying to say, and his messaging to the
players and the team and the fans and everybody has

(09:59):
been that he plans on winning, that he didn't come
here just for rebuilds and all these other things that
have been thrown out there in the universe. But he's
also shorter of champion the quote moving in silence, so
he doesn't want any of his players saying anything. You've
noticed the podcast appearances have been cut back.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
And think of that nature, you know, like default, because
rodgers is no longer there. Aaron Rodgers' absence is about
ninety eight percent of that.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
Ilbum still has picked up those contracts.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Speaking of what Steelers forty eight days from now open
up against the Jets, We've been asking this question throughout
the course of the summer here and it's one that
I think a lot of coordinators and coaches they talk
about in their meetings, like who's the one guy you've
got to shut down on this team? I mean, it's
hard to do position a position, but who's the one
guy for the Jets that you thinking opponents have got

(10:51):
to just eliminate if they can. Is it Wilson? Is
it Quentin Williams? Who is it in your mind that
presents the biggest challenge as an opponent out there?

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah, we'll do one on offense, one on defense. Obviously
on offense, it's Garrett Wilson. I mean, if I am
an opposing defensive coordinator, my plan all week is double
team that guy, bracket cover check guy, and dare anyone
else on the team to beat us. Breesaw is the
talented running back, but he just has not been able
to stay healthy. Hell, he has a run for a
thousand yards. Of this group, he's fit all the hubbub

(11:21):
that he gets at nationally, with the glimpses that we
see of what he's capable of. And a wide receiver
two on this roster is looking questionable. It's murky. There's
a lot of randos here in the wide receiver room. So, Jeff,
I'm the Steelers. Who's the weak one opponent? And it's
you know, coming up right around the corner. I'm doubling
Garrett Wilson and daring literally anyone else on offense to

(11:41):
beat me. He's a dynamic player. He is incredibly consistent.
He's had eighty plus catches in a thousand receiving yards
to his first three seasons. Only five players in NFL
history have accomplished that. So despite him playing with eight quarterbacks,
Justin Fields is about to be his ninth. There's a
trivia question for your local pub night if they're asking
that later nine, which is unbelievable. That's it for Garrett

(12:05):
Wilson is trying to stop him, if you can now.
The positive thing for the Jets or what they champion,
is that Tanner angst And and Aaron Glenn say, we know
that everyone's player is going to be the double Garrett Wilson,
and we have creative ways to get him the ball.
We'll see if that's all hubup soccer, if that's real.
And then defensively, you guys mentioned the other player, quinnn Williams.

(12:25):
He is the straw that stirs the drink for this team.
He's the second longest tenured player on the team outside
of their long snapper. He's the captain, he's the star
and really the same sort of thing. At wide receiver,
Quinn is really good, but all the other defensive tackles
on the roster leave much to be desired. So again,
if I'm the Steelers, I'm double and triple team in

(12:46):
Quinn Williams. And it was funny if you guys have
been watching the NFL Top one hundred that the NFL
Network put out Quinn. They have Quinn miked up for
one of the games last year and he gets double
teamed and then triple team. He's like two three guys,
come on, so he's doing an ESPN Come on, man,
for all the double drip fees are coming his way.
I've got bad news for you, Quinn. I think those

(13:07):
are going to keep coming here in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Yeah, it looks like you look at their depth charter
and I see what you're talking about there. It's going
to be a fascinating year. Paul Asden covers the Jets.
Let's promote what you got going on? Where can we
find your work? As we get excited about this Jets
team finally breaking through and being a winner this year,
it's going to happen, man.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yeah, that's it. Amen. Again, A massive shout out to
all the South Carolinians out there. And I used to
live in Goose Creek in Summerville, so I love all
my Carolina people, baby, so shout out to all you guys.
But yes, you could catch all my work for heavy
dot com. That's where I write my articles. I did
it behind the seats piece talking to a lot of players.

(13:45):
Justin Field held a you know, off season workout plan
that he organized and flew a bunch of teammates down
to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to get some workouts in before
training camp. So I got to do it behind the
seats piece with that and a lot of the players.
So I dropped that morning, which is great. And then
I just mentioned it earlier. Jeremy follow joined us over
the weekend to set us up for training camp and
all the big contracts and things that have been happening.

(14:08):
So you guys can check that out on www dot
YouTube dot com slash Boy Green two five for the
video content every day, and also for all my written
work Heavy on Jets.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Paul, you're a Carolinian at heart, and we'll try to
band together this year and get back to the playoffs together.
Let's do this. Come on, man, all

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Right, We'll see you guys in the Super Bowl.
