Speaker 1 (00:00):
Something we will not be bored with ever is our
good friend David Kloneger for the Post and Curry or
covering the Game Cocks unlike anybody helt out there. David,
Welcome back to the show, my friend. It's been too long.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Absolutely, get how you doing.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
We are doing fantastic. I was listening back to some
of our past interviews and I often tell people you're
one of my favorite guests because you put so much
color into the commentary. Here is one comic you made
about Pete Limbo's special teams one time, about you get
your pants down by your ankles, make it look like that.
And I do want to kind of shift back into

(00:32):
serious mode here the Game Cocks obviously with a big
loss at home twenty seven to three. Just from a
thirty thousand foot perspective, here we'll get more granular. There
was a lot of excitement, I think, from fans about
this opportunity. It just so happens that one defensive line
happened to be a little bit better than the other,
and Old Miss played a great game. South Carolina did not.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, that's pretty much the long and short of it. Obviously,
if you look at the numbers, you know some of
the minutia of the game, it breaks down pretty even,
but the fact is that the team with the most
points wins, and South Carolina can only manage three points
because their offense surely decided to take the day off,
and you know that that can't happen in this league. Really,

(01:16):
in season only only get twelve games, So a lot
of going back to the drawing board this.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Week, Yes, certainly is when you look at this team
as a whole. Look, there were three and one, obviously
with a lot of excitement coming into this game, and
I think you know you tell me, I was busy
doing some work for the Clemson Athletic Network and I
didn't get to see much of the game. I've looked
back at some of the highlights, and I always heard
Shane Biemer was very disappointed on many levels of this game.

(01:43):
Would you classify this as one of the more frustrating,
overtly frustrating games that you've seen? Beamer here, because you
can understand why would you say so from your perspective.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Absolutely, I think it's the most. I don't think it's
one of the most at all. It is the most
just because the things that they pride themselves on of
playing smart football, of not getting the other team more
chances of you know, just doing what they do. They
didn't do any of that. The only thing that they
can say that they did well was they played hard,
no questioning the effort. Yeah, it just didn't work at all.

(02:17):
And the fact is is when that you add to
your misery by committing pre staff penalties, by turning the
ball over, by doing a lot of things that you
can't control. And I mean, it's hard enough to win
games at South tron just because most other teams you
play are going to be better than you. But there
are games that you can stay in and win if
you just play smart football. And they didn't do anything

(02:37):
close to that.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You mentioned earlier today that Clayton White, the coordinator for
the defense, talked about ready for new wrinkles, especially early
in the game. Those Alabama may have a few tricks
after a shocking loss. And let's talk about that for
a minute. As South Carolina turns the page, and what
did they see right in front of them the front
door is a pissed off Alabama team, albeit it's not

(02:59):
Nick Say, and they still have a lot of talent.
Early sort of feelings on this game. Obviously, it's going
to be a hell of a challenge for Shane Beemer's team.
Do you think they're gonna be able to match up?

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well, guys, there's really no great answer for that, but.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yes there is, and you're gonna give it to us.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You have to boil it down to the most simple thing.
Can they match up with them? Talent was no? I
mean Alabama Alabama for a reason they got Vanderbilt, but
Vanderbilt that you can't turn the game in your favor.
You can, but you're gonna have to get some breaks.
And the fact is that Alabama is going to be
a team that's very frustrated, very mad that they not

(03:38):
only lost a game, but they lost a Vanderbilt, which, hey,
get Bandy credit because they played a terrific game, but still,
Alabama should never be losing to or Alabama should never
be losing to Vanderbilt. So it's definitely gonna be interesting.
I think South Carolina is going to run into a
buzzsaw and we'll see what happened.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
What's the situation at quarterback moving forward here? As you estimated, obviously,
the offense is not very good right now? Yeah, look,
I'm following this team from a little bit of a distance,
and you know, I can tell you this. My son
was raving about Nick Harbor from playing the college football
game on THEA Sports. Is there anything going on offensively
that can get some juice flowing here or are they
just just going to be out matched week the week here?

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Well, guys, it all starts up front, right. You know,
if you can't block, then you're not going to be
able to sit back there and throw. You're not going
to be able to throw downfield, and you're not going
to be able to open many holes rushing. So they've
actually done a lot better in their running game that
I thought they would. Run blocking has not really been
that severe of a problem, but pass blocking is horrendous.
They gave up six sacks to Ole Miss last weekend,

(04:43):
which wouldn't be so bad except that improved their season
total to twenty two, which now ranks one hundred and
thirty third in the country, and there are only one
hundred and thirty three Division one teams in the country,
So got to get that fixed. I mean, no matter
who your quarterback is, Joe Montana of Tom Brady, all right,
Joe Montana could do it because the best quarterbacks have
ever lived anybody else. It's you know, you can't throw

(05:08):
the ball if you're not you know, if you're flat
on your back. And they have not been able to
protect the QB. They've not been able to open holes
for them to run a lot of those boble QB options,
and that's the reason why they've been struggling as well
as they have. I mean, you can't really start anything
offensively to tweak or put a new wrinkle into your
game plan if you know that you can't block from

(05:28):
the very outset.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
I believe you mentioned to us last year the dal
Loggin's always good for a quote, had told you guys
in the press corps that the former quarterback Spencer Radler
is like spaghetti sauce. He covered up a lot of
the issues. And that's a good segue as I'm already
getting hungry here looking at the Saints opportunity to possibly
possibly now put Spencer Radler into the lineup with Derek

(05:51):
Carr missing time. What's your thought on that. I personally
think Radler was a little bit overlooked in the draft process,
but again I'm a big fan of his Going back
to his early days as a college quarterback, and I
think it's the much better move than Jake Haynter. Do
you think he would play some good ball down there
with the weapons they have with the Saints. Your outlook
on Spencer Radler possibly starting.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Well, I think that you didn't. You drafted him for
a reason. You know that he can play. He proved
that in preseason camp and that he can help you out. Yes,
Derek Carr earned the starting job. He's a guy that's
been there before, and I don't think that an untested
rookie would come in and automatically unseat him. But you
kept him on the roster because you knew there might
be a need to use him, and now can be

(06:35):
the time if you have to split it, fine, But really,
in my experiences with the NFL, you like to go
ahead and prepare one guy as if he's going to
be the starter that week, and you give him all
the reps. So with Spencer, the only thing that's a
detractor for him is his hike, but it isn't that
serious of a detractor. He can still see over the line,
he could still audible, he could still make all the moves,

(06:58):
and of course they've got a lot of second help
help him out there. So I can't get into the
mind of the brain trust of the New Orleans Saints,
but I can't say you could do a lot worse
than putting Spencer Ratler out there as you're starting to
be well.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
If nothing else, it'll be entertaining considering the Saints offensive
line is a mess. Spencer's been there, done that, has
the T shirt, and I think it's going to be
a real cool thing. If he does play November second
against Carolina, It'll be the Lagette, Radler, Bull and Charlotte
of all places. I'm cheering for it because as a
Panthers reporter, I don't bring a lot of cheer to

(07:29):
