Speaker 1 (00:00):
And joining us here at the top of the show
to get into it all. We're going to take your calls.
Don't worry, get plenty of time. Other guests will follow here.
But this is Will Parkinson, our good friend from the
Turn on the Jets podcast. He's an NFL analyst. He
does a great job on all the social medias. You
can follow him on exit Will pa eleven. Will. Thanks
for making time because the Jets, as we learn a

(00:21):
couple of hours ago, have dismissed their head coach, Robert Sala.
Welcome in, my friend. How you been a little busy today?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, never a dull moment, you know in jets Land.
So yeah, thanks so much for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Guys, Yeah, no problem. We've had yon, I believe a
couple of years ago to do our two day series
during the summer, and during that portion we knew nothing
about an Aaron Rodgers' destiny towards the Jets. Then we
learned about that a couple of years ago, and then
obviously this has been a weird relationship between the quarterback
and the head coach. Let's just start with your opening

(00:55):
thoughts on what happened, why now, and what's next?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, so I think a couple of different things, right.
I think from a Robert Solid perspective, it just wasn't
good enough, you know. And this is not a just
this year thing. You know, There's been a lot of issues,
whether it's rookie quarterbacks and you know, a quarterback at
you know, young quarterback that gets hurt, but you know
it isn't performing well and gets benched by the end
of the year, then they trade for Rogers and and like,

(01:22):
there's been plenty of excuses, and frankly most of them
have some validity. But at the end of the day,
the Jets are twenty and thirty six into Robert Sala
far far too many double digit losses, far too many
flat performances. You know. I think they lead the league
in penalties over the last you know, thirty six months.
So simply not been good enough in the last two weeks.

(01:42):
From a Jet's perspective, games that even if they weren't,
you know, maybe expected to beat Minnesota, that the performance
in the first half the thousand, you know, thousand miles
stare from Robert Sala out in the space and the
energy you know he kind of was leading with was
just not getting the job done, and you know, you
hear players talk about account of ability, different things of
that nature. What hey, Johnson felt it was time to

(02:03):
make a move, and well, I don't know that. I
the timing is perfect. It's hard to hard to blame
them in a season that is so crucial that you know,
they they're looking to just do whatever they can't kind
of save their season here at two and three.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Will are you surprised?

Speaker 2 (02:24):
No, yes, and no. I know that's a boring answer,
but I would say I'm not I'm not surprised that
he got fired. I'm probably surprised that happened Tuesday morning,
you know, like it did. I think it would have
been either right out, you know, on the plane home,
which we've seen before, you know, or you know, maybe
in a week or two, you know, you didn't really

(02:44):
acpect it, maybe going leading into week six. But yeah,
I'm not surprised he he lost his job. I mean, look,
the Jets have not done this in a twenty five
plus years. But at the same time, they havent Aaron
Rodgers in this win now mode, you know, and they
didn't start underperforming, So you know, I guess unpressed and
that situation and so Yeah, I'm not shocked. I just

(03:05):
I'm more surprised as at timing.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
If anything, Well, Parkinson is an NFL analyst and covers
the New York Jets. We'll give him an opportunity to
promote all of his wares here in just a few
short minutes, joining us on short order to help us
break down his hometown team. The Jets making a big
move today firing their head coach Robert Salah. And look,
some of the reporting from Jonathan Jones CBS Sports overin
the last hour or so seems to suggest that there

(03:30):
was some consideration from sala that he was going to
make a move and try to fire Nathaniel Hackett. I
don't know if there's any sourcing from your end or
any feelings you have from your end on the validity
of that if that played into this. But the Aaron
Rodgers Hackett dynamic, do you think there's something to that
that these guys maybe survived, You know, Aaron was going

(03:51):
to survive, but maybe Hackett survived and Salah didn't because
of the relationship with Rogers. There.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah, look, it seems as though you know, Hackett, you know,
may may not survive his duties as as play caller.
There's a there's a chance that you know, he is
still relieved of those duties. Jeff Ulbrick spoke to a
couple of minutes ago and and mentioned taking a hard
look at you know, everyone's responsibility on staff and you know,
who will be calling defensive play, is calling offensive plays,

(04:20):
et cetera. You know, I think from a jet perspective,
maybe trying to change something up with with me at Hackett.
Maybe he's still involved, but to a lesser extent and
and different things of that nature. Uh, maybe it do
make sense. But yeah, it seems as though Salah wasn't
gonna fire him, he was going to demote him. Uh,

(04:40):
you know, from a game day perspective, and you know,
it seems as though there's a chance, you know, Robert
Sala I mean, Jeff Olbrick may do the same. But yeah,
it'll be interesting to see, you know kind of you know,
how this kind of plays out. They you know, mentioned
over the next about thirty six hours or so, you.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Tweeted out something earlier about the next steps. In terms
of front office, Joe Douglass is still in the building,
and obviously Aaron Rodgers is still the quarterback, and those
are two important pieces to what could be next a
potential deal for Devonte Adams, and they've been listed among
several teams, including the Saints and others as leading candidates.
Has anything changed there? Do you think they're still all
in on that or do you think just answer that

(05:20):
question first and then I've got to follow up on
top of that with Devant.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, I think I think DeVante Adams is going to
be a Jet. I don't think this has changed anything,
If anything, has shown me that the Jets are, you know,
willing to kind of still really go all in and
then just they're not going to pull punch it here
and thinks of that anteresty. I still think this gets
done and if anything, to me, this made me feel
like Joe Douglas has got to say his keyster. Right.

(05:46):
Do you think the playoffs now you know? So? Yeah,
I think they end up end up with DeVante Adams
here shortly or you know, at least within the week.
I would say it's probably sooner.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
In that will when you watch this offense, obviously you
look at thee as much as anybody, and that's one
of the reasons we respect you here on this show
and what I've seen the little bit is just a
bit of a static offense, not a lot of movement.
But that's been what we do here if you're the
Aaron Rodgers led offense for a while, That's what they
did in Green Bay to a large extent. You know,
I think Lafleura mixed it up a little more than

(06:18):
what we've seen. But does the DeVante Adams markedly fix
what they're doing? I mean, I know he adds some great,
you know, opportunities on the boundary. He's a top flight
receiver still at his age plus thirty years old. But
there's other issues going on here, as has been exposed
by Vance Joseph against Denver and then of course last
week against Brian Flores. Do you think that Do you

(06:40):
think it's the right move to make right now as
an organization?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah, so I think it is. You know, you mentioned
the offense and being static. You know, look, I understand
you know, Washington j justsin camp. You know, this wasn't
an offense that was quite static. They were taking deep shots,
they were using motion. Garrett Wilson was lined up all
over the place. It feels like they cut into the
season and totally scrapped all the things they were doing,

(07:07):
you know, which is which has obviously been odd to
say the lead you know fellas. So you know, I
would say, you know, from my perspective, at some point,
you know, maybe it's just a quote unquote fresh face,
you know, fresh ideas. Maybe it's just a little bit
more motion, a little bit different. That's kind of paramount
why I feel like the Devonte Adams thing is still

(07:28):
makes such good sense because you know, Devant they can
go out and be guys one on one and and
kind of help you when you have a static offense
when you're maybe not you know, maybe not you know,
rolling at all, silvers on offense. So yeah, this move, like,
the more I've sat on it, I just think, I know,
it's not pretty to look at, and and you know,

(07:50):
I know all those different things, but it kind of
feels like it was either do make a move now
or just pray it gets it right, and all of
a sudden you do make a move, maybe five or
six months, you know, weeks in a line to see
is already kind of over.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah, it seems like it's between the Jets and Saints.
And you know, I know the Saints worked their voodoo
on the salary cap, but I'm not sure what that
means for them. They're an aging group and they looked
bad last night on many levels. We'll see what happens.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, I'm not sure. Dennis Allen's much more stable than
Robert Sala.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
You know what, thank you, Trey will tell you here
Trey falcom my co host, We talked about coaches in
the offseason that just have not shown a lot in
terms of they've been there for a few years. They
obviously have defensive acumen, but they have not taken their
team to the playoffs, and Sala had not done that
through this point. Allen's very much in the same boat
here in the NFC South. Speaking of which, we borrowed

(08:38):
one of your quarterbacks for a couple of years, Sam Donald.
We didn't get the Ashford best out of them. Just
before we let you go, your thoughts on Donald and
connecting with Kevin O'Connell and realizing his potential, because obviously
the Jets have had a rough go in the quarterback
market and the draft and beyond seemingly better now with
Aaron Rodgers. But what do you make of Sam's revival here?

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, super heavy for him, a guy who handled himself
like a super professional, and he was here in New
York and I know the same thing down in Carolina.
You know, well loved by team. It's always been super talented.
He's in a great situation now where O'Connell's kind of
taking some of the thinking app for him and kind
of just letting him go out and play. You know,
they've got a talented group there. The defense is playing fantastic.

(09:20):
The you know it's safe to say the offense with
Justin Jefferson and guys like that or you know, no
scrubs by any means. So he's super happy for him.
We'll see how it continues throughout the rest of the year.
But their team thirty at five and oh, it's hey,
can we get five to the next the next twelve
and make the playoffs at minimum? You know, maybe they're
thinking more than that, but yeah, I think they're in

(09:40):
a they're in quite a good uh quite a good spot.
Plus you know, Sam's on an affordable deal and maybe
it makes you think, hey, do they run it back
one more year and and hope that uh you know,
they get j J an other year after that type
of thing. Will.

Speaker 1 (09:52):

it makes the most sense.
