Speaker 1 (00:00):
Without further ado, Let's bring in a gentleman who played
in the Southern Conference. Not only that, he was named
to the All one hundred Anniversary team as a football
star plates in basketball was a very good tight end
in the NFL for many years for the Panthers, most
notably the Eagles. And that's why we bring him to
you today. It's Furman legend and NFL stud Luthor Broughton.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Luther.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
How you doing that? David? Let him and energy on
that intro? Man, I need Paul Schaeffer over here.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Man.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
It's like it's like you you were prepared for me
or something.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, there's I only prepare for one show a year.
And that's when Luther comes on to talk about the uh,
the Andy Reid Invitational, which is this is what it's
turned into. Now. I go ahead, man, I want to
hear your take on this, not mine.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
No, no, man, it's uh. It's awesome to to be
able to see Big Red go out there. You know,
I obviously started out and stilly put the Big Red.
If you guys don't know Big Red as Andy Reid.
Big Red wasn't the coach when I got drafted. It
was Ray Rhoades. I came to Carolina and when Big
Red got the job in Philly, they traded back for me.
(01:11):
Mike McCartney was part of.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
That, by the way, Mike, Mike McCartney, Mike McCart Mike
McCartney not to be confused with Mike McCarthy. McCarthy's. Mike
McCarthy's not a Partney. Mike McCarty's not on Twitter. Mike
McCartney is. And it's the.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Best big going new Yeah. Yeah, he's had actually a
tough couple of weeks. Man. You know, his dad passed away. Philliparty,
Colorado legend. Uh. You know, I talked to him probably
about once a week. That's my guy, man, that was
my Once he left football he became an agent. Well,
(01:46):
that was one of his one of his guys cousins
agencies and genius Mike. Yeah cool, playing under that under
Andy Reid. It's amazing though. I'll tell you quickly. Uh,
and we'll get into this in the second. Todd Kingston
was one of my teammates. Run.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Yes, that was the name I was going to hit
you with. You're so good man, Okay, go ahead, there's
one down. I got eighteen more to go, Todd Pingston
go ahead, okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
So Todd was one of my teammates in Philly and
Todd is the running backs coach now for uh the
Kansas City. And Todd hit me up and he's like, hey,
you know, when we come in town, we got to
have a drink. And I was like, done right.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Of course Tom goes on and here we go to
the chiefs of playing the Panthers and Cam Cam is
my son. He had a couple of games that day.
You but my schedule worked out because they were they
were midday, not late day, so we were good. I
go to the hotel and uh and Tod's like, man,
(02:50):
you know we're still in those dogs on meetings. I
was like, yeah, I know, I know, I know how.
And when we get done, I go down there and
you know, the security is on the hall and you know,
random people of obviously looking for uh, Travis with I'm
sorry Travis Kelsey and Patrick Mahomes. But so I walk
(03:11):
in there and I'm not walking in there all like ooh,
I'm trying to see someone. I'm walking in there like
I belong and the guy really doesn't know because like,
I don't look like I could play except for the
green Beard and and I walk over and I said, hey,
I played for Andy and Silly and he smiled. He's like, oh,
you know their their meetings. I said yeah. Todd texted
me blah blah blah, and he's like, I tell you what,
(03:33):
you can't stay in, but but I'll tell them when
you get out, and I'll tell me.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
They didn't tell me, tell me they didn't leave. No,
absolutely not as soon.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
As they got out to Todd texted me, I was
upstairs at the bar and I go down and big
hug and he Tom Melvin comes over on the and
then he's like man, and he's about to come out.
And he walks out. He's got this big old smile,
and you know I did. And he's laughing. He's like, Luther,
(04:10):
get your butt in here, let's go eat. Got all
the flood in here, come get some flood. And he
told it. He was like, hey, this is one of
my former players. Let him in. And so we get
in there and it's amazing. I actually one of their
coaches and now I can't remember his name. Went across
high school. Now you know, I'm from rural South Carolina.
(04:30):
Bross High School is one of the other small high
schools in South Carolina. And me and that guy caught up.
But you walk in and I probably beat you to
the punch because I know, you know, I know a
bunch of guys on both of these steps to Tom
Tanks then pulls me in. Tom Melvin walks up. We hugged,
(04:51):
Big Big Reed comes, Big Big Red comes, I mean
Andy talk hugged. Then you walk in and that he
who I didn't. I didn't play for Maggie. He wasn't
on a staff, but we knew each other because we missed.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
It's so incestrats, everybody knows everybody. It's it's a big incest.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
There much crossover and right, and then you get damnit
Rick was Rick was the Eagles trainer when I was there.
That's right, and Rick has been there for a million years.
And then you get u uh not was the f
(05:26):
one of the TV coaches when I was in Philly.
And then then uh one of Andy's Sun's there? They
count who else I know?
Speaker 1 (05:35):
M that Let me let me ask you, you might
have a couple of I think you wiped out the
entire list for Kansas City. The whole idea was, let
me see how many guys not stumping you. You know
you don't Wan like Cte. I know you don't. You
know who you're talking to. Burke Culter I had down.
I was proud of that when Tom Melvin, who was
the tight ends coach I believe during that reason offensive.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
When I when he was an office assistant when I
was dead.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
And your your one Castillo's son is on that staff, well.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, one son's on the staff. Of course, he was
a fricking baby when I was there. I know, you
know it's crazy.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
And the other names I have done, the guys that
Luther bron By the way, if you're not familiar with
Luther's game, what rock have you been hiding under? He
was a SoCon legend and one of your great moments
in a season that I do. It was not a
great year for the Carolina Panthers, but you sort of
elevated your game and it raised your profile for a
guy like Andy Reid that said, man, I need some
of that in my offense. In year one it was
(06:37):
nineteen ninety eight, your last year, well your first of
two years in Carolina, I should say, where you caught
that pass and went for a touchdown against Dick Vermill's
rams and pulled out pull out the dance moves that
Thank goodness, this is on radio. We don't have to
be subjected to that violent content. Uh, Luther, Luther, this
is the most interesting perspective I could get from you.
(06:57):
I want to go back to the Andy Reid thing
and the wait. Other people you were affiliated with during
your time is the owner Jeffrey Lurie and the general manager,
Howie Roseman, who I believe arrived there in two thousand
in some capacity.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
I thought he was kind of hell my age, basically
him and Brandon Bean. Of course you know Brandon. But
those guys were starting out when when I was still playing,
I was like, you know, probably third fourth year. So
all those guys, and then of course I missed one guy,
(07:32):
Rob Albarino. He's their content production guy. He was in
Philly with us.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
I mean, that's a deep cut. Come on, that's right,
both media guys.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
I couldn't remember who who the other guy was, and
it was Rob and I'll tell you who the guy
is from Cross South Carolina.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
But Rod Wilson, he's the outside linebackers coach for the Chief.
He's from one of our small towns. He went to
South Carolina sprout the University of South Carolina. And that's nuts.
Of course, Uh, you talk about Howie and then there's
the Eagle staff man. It's uh, let's.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Go let me go back, O quick, just real quick,
let me go back to ninety eight because I want
to pull this conversation. Luther brontn is our guest. Played
for several teams that have tangential and real connections to
Super Bowl fifty nine. You had to practice for two
consecutive years against defenses that were either coordinated by or
partially coordinated by the two defensive coordinators that.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Are going to be doing the defensive coordinator and it's unliab.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
You played with vic and you played with us bags
back to back years. Talk about that experience.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Of course, of course vic is is you know, he's
he's a lifer, he was there forever. But and you
you're practice going against these guys, and you're like, well,
you know this, I played in the Sunday not crapping
on the Southern Conference, but it wasn't as complicated going
against those defense and tricky, and then you go to
(09:08):
Philly and Spags is learning under freaking Jim Johnson.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Jimmy Johnson yep, and talk about.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
A defense that can give you some confusion.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, dude, I remember those early teams in the two
thousands when when Carolina, you know, they had their struggles
at times, but they had these great battles with Philly,
including the title game, and Jim Johnson, Uh, just defensively,
he would throw so much at you in terms of
disguise's double a gap and you would fire out of
(09:39):
that and bring the pressure and drop guys out. And Vic, look,
he's gone to this quarters you know, the school of
Fangio they call it, where all these guys like Evero
and and Staley and some of the defensive minds have
have copied some parts of this too high late rotation
quarters coverage we see so much of. But Vic back
in the day that was all about the Dom Caper's
(10:01):
zone blitz that came in the thirty four and Vic
has just been a guy that in Miami players this
last year. Look, say what you want to Befingio. You
know he's not necessarily going to be a warm and
fuzzy guy, but man, that defense for Philly. They needed
an ass kicker, and look how good they are now
right now with Vic drawing it up and driving him
to that level.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Dude, listen, but let's so so going against those guys
in practice. I mean, I can't say enough those two
guys who are coaching the Super Bowl defense. The Eagle's
defense was unbelievably bad last season, yep. And you, of course,
(10:43):
players matter. Players matter. You can't put Luther Broughton at
John Ellis at corner and expect to win with.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
I want to do that, so I want one time,
just one time, to.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Get that out of the way. However, you get Vic Fangio,
and then you go and draft Mitchell and Jeanne Cooper
and then you go re sign CJ. Gardner Johnson, and
you have those guys in the back end of your secondary.
That helps. But you bringing somebody who has a great system, yep.
(11:16):
And you've got those guys already up front. You've got
a grown up in the room. He's a grown up
in the room exactly look where they are.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
That's so true. And that's why your perspective on this
is valuable for anybody that I know, and even if
I knew guys that we're twelve thirteen year old career
vet Hall of Fame guys. It's the conversations that matter
with the pros that were in the room, and you
get to know some of these guys so intimately over
the years, and you get to know Spags in his journey.
(11:45):
And I'm gonna tell you, Lou, this Kansas City team, Look,
it's funny to make fun of it. It's funny to
talk about Kermit, the Mahomes. It's funny to talk about
the officiating and the memes that the AI. I'm telling you,
someone's gonna lose their damn job someday with these these memes.
But it's Spags were the football purists out there. Let's
take a couple of days and make fun of the
(12:06):
refs and let's get back to what Spags does. He
is their MVP in the playoffs. I'm sorry, I love Mahomes,
but man, when he gets down to it, he has
one ready in the chamber for the greatest players out there,
and we saw it last week against Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Bro Listen, man, he terrifies me. You know, you know,
I'm all Eagles all the time, no matter how much
I like and and and and all those guys. He
terrifies me. He absolutely terrifies me because of the things
(12:41):
he can do defensively, of the way he could fool quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Yeah, you're not easily terrified either. You're not often speechless.
I can tell you're reminiscing on this album.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Like but listen, he was there two years ago and
Jail and her to lit them up. Well, let's let's
talk about that.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Well, this is where it is. Okay, so lose a
little butt hurt now that I got. I was glazing
on spags even though you know spags is part I'm
gonna tell you something about hurts. All right, all this
conversation about are you a franchise guy or you're not
a franchise guy, Luther, This is why I miss our
era back in the two thousands, because we didn't have
instant you know, coffee, microwaved takes and baked up. We
(13:24):
had message boards and we had papers we had to read,
and we had real sports talk where we had to
talk about this and put your thoughts out there. The
idea that you have to put a ranker out there
on all these guys is ridiculous because in my opinion.
At least, what matters is what you do within the
structure you're in. Right now, Jalen was benched in the
championship game in a college football playoff. That's a humiliating
(13:46):
thing to go through. The guy's now is starting quarterback
in the NFL two out of three years, and dare
I say through the legs and through the arm, he's
shown he can do it. Your thoughts on his ability
as a passer, because look, it hasn't been greated to time,
but there have been moments in that Super Bowl a
couple of years ago where when he's got to pull
it out and get it done, he can do it.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Listen, listen, man. So I wasn't the biggest scaleing Hurts fan.
I wasn't the biggest fan of as tracking him in
the second round. And that's probably because we had extended Wentz,
which I don't know why, because we didn't have to.
So you know, I'm thinking, man, we need other things.
(14:27):
We're using the spectrum round pick on the QB where
we got a guy. Well, clearly there's a reason why
I work mortgages and not in the front office. Well,
if I put more time into it, I probably would
be better. But I wasn't a fan of that. And
then I thought, you know, Carson Wentz just isn't the
guy anymore. Maybe we move on to Hurts, and you
(14:48):
saw hurt doing some things, and I thought, okay, you
can be the guys. He takes us to the super Bowl.
And then last year he started doing wench things. He
started taking unnecessary facts, he started throwing interceptions in the
red zone playing hero ball, he started fumbling the ball.
When when when when when we're right at around a
(15:09):
forty five fifty yard field goal he does that, or
he takes an eight yard sat to turn it into
fifty three yards.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
You couldn't and they couldn't stop the bleeding. Once it starts.
It was like a virus.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
It just grows. Is he a one year wonder? Did
we just pay fifty million dollars for a guy who
can't get the job done? And then you realize he's
had a different offense coordinator every year for the past
eight years. Yes, yes, seven years, you had one.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
You had.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
The old miss coach at Alabama.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
You're on the way back. Yeah it was lane kipping, Yeah,
lane lane kipping.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Did you get soft right? Didn't try for Oklahoma, and
he gets Riley right yep. Then his rookie year in
the NFL, we.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Had Doug right, we have Dougie.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
T and uh and uh Frank, No, no, Frank was
gone Frank.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Coach Frank Frank was halfway to his CTE after Jim
Hersey just ruined him ahead.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Let's call it Dougie p offense. Maybe it was no.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
We we know it was a Press Taylor offense, but
that's another story.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Press Taylor Tylor. That's what is Press Taylors Greek. So
then then Doug Lee and we get Sarianni and Stikeen's offense, right,
and then Steiken gets a head coach job, head coaching job,
and we get the guy we drafted last year who
was it Brown? Brown? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:38):
And Brian Johnson, Brian Johnson was the o C last year,
Brian Johnson Johnson way too soon for Yeah, he wasn't ready.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
And then this year we've got uh, you.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Know, big, big big teeth Killing Moore.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
We got killing. He's a different coordinator and he's adjusted alone. Listen,
are there times where I am so pissed at Jalens
is not hitting the guy right in front of his face,
you get a blitch, you get a guy because Jalen
likes to go ahead and take the big play. If
it's design to be a big play, Jalen is gonna
(17:16):
hold that ball, right, So fine, fine, Fine, John, He's
not Joe Joe Burrow, He's not Patrick Mahomes, He's not
No Luther.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
You haven't gotten a memo. We have to. Everybody has
to have one of those. They grow on trees, so
you know they do.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
In a league where those guys, where those guys can
be average and make forty million dollars. Daniel Jones, you're
mad because we have a guy who's above average, because
there's not fifteen. There's not really fifteen really good one
of these going on? Right, No, there's not a guy
who's above average who makes plays with his feet. Yep,
(17:57):
who just wins? I listen, I he won me over
a while ago. I know I had my issues, but
for who am I I'm stand right football because I
played football and I don't want to act like I'm
gonna know it all. But he won me over. I'm
an Eagles fan and I'm I'm rolling with Jailer. If
(18:20):
jail goes up and stakes it up in the Super Bowl.
I want to run it back with jail in next year.
I'm cool with him. We we do what we need
to do to win game. Why should we? Why should
we go out there just because everyone's griping and saying, look,
we're gonna fifty two times this week. We're just we
got one ball, but we're still gonna throw fifty times
(18:43):
this week because we have two good wide receivers, and
we have everybody and their mom talking about you about
what you can't do. You've got Sha Daniels over here
talking about what you can't do. You got Phil sid
phil Sim's son. Because I won't even call him Chris.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Right now, chrisy pissing off a lot of people these days. Yeah,
he's been on the Jalen Hurts hate train for a
while and he can't adjust his briars. He cannot just say, look,
I was wrong. The guy is pretty good.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Listen, let me tell you when I I I really
really had to stop and and he said a lot
of stuff.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
He's an absolutely ago.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
He got on TV and said what the reason Mark
Andrews dropped the ball? He said Mark Andrews was going
to get a bad grace and dropped them to talk.
He said that wasn't a good passed by the long.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
He didn't know, he didn't do that, He didn't see.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
He said, Lamar is going to get a pack, said,
Lamar is going to get a failing in the film
room for that past. He said he didn't.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
He's okay.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
So that he said it wasn't accurate, it wasn't hard enough.
He basically put it in his stock.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
That's that's ridiculous. He's entering the territory with that.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Sides that he wasn't serious, No, he's not.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
He barely played football. He got his spleen knocked out
by our wallace. He can go sit in the corner
and you know.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
When you say something like that, you're not serious. And
I listen, nobody's beyond reproach, nobody criticism.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
But when when it's just when it's completely unfair and
it's rooted in bias, and it's rooted in not so
much bias, but hey, this is what's going to move
the needle. It's the coward express like that's what I
have some fun and talk fall man, Right.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
People want to go ahead and put these qbs in
a box. They want them to be six four with
a huge arm, and uh doesn't they think it's the
QB runs he's he's he can't throw the ball.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
That's exactly what it is.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
Part of that is that, you know, I don't like
to hit on this. Part of that is rooted in
that QB box because when you have quarterbacks who's a
little darker than others and he starts running around, they
said he can't. He can't. The reason he's running is
because he can't read a game.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
Luther, you're your old buddy, Bill Polian no victim of this.
He suggested, Lamar should have been a you know, a
wide receiver, and this happens. And this is the what
we have done now is we have now seen not
just a Doug Williams quarterbacking the Redskins where you're more
in the pocket, or a guy like Warren Moon, or
you could just sling it all. You're seeing a VIC
(21:29):
and then the guy's coming to the scene like cam.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
But and the narrative is Josh Allen. Josh Allen is athletic,
is all I don't know. Give me Josh Allen, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
I know, give me Burrow, Give me Burrow. His pocket
movement Oh my god, he's a Sam.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
The alternative is for me to have Tom Brady. I
really don't have a problem with having a slow footed guy.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Look you.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
If you if you want to take this fast guy
and I get Tom, I'm good.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
With That'll work needs to be slow in the boost.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
I'll deal with it, man, I'll deal with Brady.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
You're gonna take that. You'll You'll be okay. I mean,
you guys did the Nick Foles. I still love the
fact that Folts was at that game and Tom had
to eat it beating a big Nick had to sit
there and just dre and he knew. And Tom, who's
trying his best to do his Greg Olsen impercenation this
year on Foxes. I'm still mad at your neck. I'm like,
(22:35):
I bet you are you serial killer?
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Yes, you know he was. He's still about that.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Well, we got to hit it, man, But I just
wanted to thank you for coming on and doing this.
We're gonna do a longer form maybe after the super
Bowl we could start talking about.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Weying for a couple of weeks, grieving.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
No, that's when you come on. That's when great radio happens.
When you're all right. Final prediction. Do you have one yet?
If you have, you because I'm telling you right now,
I'm the insane one in this studio. You know that.
And I keep telling myself there is an eagle's path
to a two touchdown victory here because of the defense
and the way they fly downhill to convince me I'm wrong, right, Okay,
(23:21):
I do what distress?
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Man? I don't need the stress, man, distress distress that
I don't need a crying son.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
What stress? God, damn stress. I'm looking at the fuck
at the Panther's logo on my wall. There's some damn stress.
I got Matt Ryel spitting all over himself for three years,
rotating quarterbacks like his damn high school. Got no stress.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Cam started crying when when the rams started driving and
we had a six six point lead the.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Sun, just like his dad, just like his dead.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
Son.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
H lou Man, I mean it's too much here. The
names I mentioned that you have been a part of
over your career, the Luther Tree, the Burke Holder was
the best one I found. I was very proud of
Tom Melvin. But then you went video equipment managers. I'm like,
I don't have anything else here for you, lou will
see you soon. Man, maybe during the draft. Let's link
(24:21):
up up there in Charlotte and see how the Panthers
can keep getting a little bit better here.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
All right, all right, that'll be good
