Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now is our good friend from PFF dot com.
It's Max Chadwick, a college football analyst and does a
lot of things for PFF. Of course on the NFL side, Max,
welcome in, my friend.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
How's it going guys, it's going well.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
My friend. Uh, I got to get your first impressions.
We'll start NFL first. Look. The Panthers have been starving
for some type of relief from what's been a brutal
start to the Bryce Young era, and I'm going to
get your perspective. One week later, of course, the benching
of Bryce Young, and then Andy Dalton comes in and
puts up great numbers against the Raiders on the road.
Did you catch any of those highlights and your thoughts

(00:34):
on on Carolina moving forward the situation they're in right now.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, I watched the game obviously, and yeah, it was
pretty alarming to see Andy Dolanbie, you know, one of
the better quarterbacks the entire week after Bryce Young has
been you know, one of the worst, actually out the
worst quarterbacks throughout the first two weeks of the season,
so it's pretty obvious that he was kind of the
problem there. They did do a good job of building
around him, this offseason and he just quite simply, he

(00:58):
just doesn't have a confidence to get it done right now.
So yeah, I think they got a righte with any
Dollan going forward and seems like they will, and honestly
think this could be the best thing for Bryce down
to kind of reset, take a breath, and sit in
the sidelines for a few weeks. Then maybe downlining you
could try it out again. But as of right now,
the any Dolan absolutely is a better quarterback for this
team and he's gonna be starting for the foreseeable future.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, I agree, Max. Bryce needs some time here to
figure out his game and we'll see what happens. But
Andy is playing with confidence. They've got the Bengals coming
up in the Red Rifle revenge game of all games
against the Bengals. Clemson big win of RIMC State. Let's
hit that first fifty nine thirty five certainly a nice
carryover effect from that app State game. Offensively, Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And Kate Klubbeck has been the highest garded quarterback in
the country over the last two games for him, so
he's been fantastic. He's been unbelievable under pressure. He has
like a ninety five grade under pressure this year, and
usually if you're in the eighties, under pressure year like
one of the best in the country. So ninety five
is unbelievable. So he is, he's really bawling out right now.
We'll obviously see how he does against a little bit

(02:04):
better competition, because obviously Apple is not the best competition,
and Anti State, I think is a really overrated team.
But it's good to see that they're taking care business
so offensively in the last two games, and we'll see
how they do the rest of the year. But it's
been very encouraging that what that office has shown in
my two games.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Game Cox did a break this week, but boy, they
still remain potent here. That took on Acro in this
past weekend and those six throwback units they sported, and look,
I think this Game Cox team, they've got a lot
of confidence riding into conference play moving forward.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Definitely. Yeah, I think the biggest reason for confidence in
that team and their defensive line is absolutely ferocious. I mean,
they dominated ELS's offensive line a couple of weeks ago.
So that defensive line with Kyle Knard and Dylan Stewart
and all the d tackles and all the other edge
defenders has been one of the best in college football,
and I think that's a big reason why they've had
success so far. And I think it's one of the
best d lines in college fotball at this point in

(02:55):
my opinion. So yeah, South Carolina has got to be
really feeling good about that defensive line and get Lenora
Sellers back healthy, I'll be really good for them. But
that defense is really good to give a team a
high floor because of how farosa the d line is.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Tennessee winning to Norman and found a new way to win,
and that's by scoring only twenty five points. But look,
they got problems over there at Oklahoma at the quarterback position. Obviously,
I thought it was an impressive win. And I look
at Tennessee as obviously not breaking New Year, but one
of the most complete teams in college football right now.
What say you, Max, Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
I think the crazy thing about Tennessee for me at least,
is when we preview them preseason, we said, hey, they
have what should be a superstar quarterback in Nico Yam
Malayava and one of the best pass rushers, if not
the actional the best pass rushing colag football James Pierce Junior.
But outside of those two, you know what do they have?

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Really?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Niko Yamayava and James Piers Junior have not really played
all that great and Tennessee is still dominating teams out there,
So supporting casts around those two has been unbelievable. And
if Nico and James Pierce unr can get it going
a little bit more, I mean, it could be one
of the best, if not the best team in the
country the way they're playing right now. So I've been
blown away by Tennessee so far. I think they deserve

(04:05):
to be number three in the country right now, and
I will see how they do the rest of the
year when they got at games against George and Alabama
coming up. But I've been blown away by the volunteers
and was able to do the rest of the year.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Max. I was working on Saturday for the Clemson Athletic
Network and I turn around and all of a sudden,
I see games. Madison's got thirty points, then they got forty,
then they got seventy. What's going on with the tar
Heels and mac Brown? That is that's a crazy bad
loss at home.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, Notes looking like a basketball scorer right. Yeah, that
really fifty was the final score of that game. And yeah,
Mac Mac was kind of you know, desponding after that loss,
understandably so. And there's reports that you know, he told
the team that he might just step away. They're going
to perform like that, So we might be seeing the
last year Mack Brown, unfortunately, one of the greatest coaches
in Comfortable history. But yeah, it's a rough time right

(04:53):
now for North Carolina. And obviously they look they lost
the starting quarterback, Max Johnson's for the entire season. They
don't really have a lot answers offensively outside of running
back of Mario On Hampton. And obviously that defense got
absolutely destroyed by James Madison, a Sun Belt team this
past weekend. So yeah, North Carolina's got a lot of
issues right now. And uh this again, like I said,
this might be the last, the last year that we

(05:14):
see back Brown on the sidelines.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Max Chadwick, PFF dot com college football analyst joining us
here on Game on Miami, rolls on with cam Ward.
They laid waste to South Florida and they uh, you know,
started a little slow there, but uh Ward continues to shine.
They got Virginia Tech coming up Friday. But as you predicted,
you know, preseason, Miami was going to be right there
in that hunt for the ACC championship. And it's four
weeks in, but so far, so good for the Canes.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, they looked unbelievable, and you know, I really thought
they were the favorite of the ACT heading into the year,
and now, honestly, I didn't really think it was that close.
I thought Miami, you know, had the bost talented roster
by a good bit and it is a matter of
whether or not Mario Christopall could take advantage of that talent,
and he had so far. So they got some big
games coming up. Obviously, Virginia Tech twenty. Even the Hopies
have been kind of rough to start the year. That's

(05:58):
still an interesting game Friday night, and yeah, we'll see
what they could do the rest of the season. But yeah,
Miami offensively and defensively has been absolutely dominant so far.
And this is why I thought they were the favorite
in the AGENC and why I still think they're a
clear favorite in the agency right now.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Two huge games in prime time coming up Saturday. Let's
start in the Big Ten with Illinois number nineteen. They
got the huge win in Nebraska. I mean that was
huge to get that win on the road. And Luke
Goldmeyer look a great story that he continues to show.
Drew Allard playing some great football for Penn State. These
teams are undefeated. Where are you leaning right now in
this game? It is in Happy Valley.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, I lean Penn Fate to win, but I don't
agree with to spread at all. It's a seventeen and
a half point spread right now. I don't think that's
very respectful to what Illinois looked like this year. I
think Illinois can go in there and it put up
a fight. Now, it's entirely possible that Penn State can
blow him out of the water, but I think Illinois
is going to cover that seventeen and a half point
spread and make us at least a two position game,
honestly in my opinion, So yeah, I think Illinois. You know,

(06:51):
their offensive line has really performed a lot better this year,
which is allowed to Luke Almeyer. And Luke Almeyer one
kept Queen has been one of the best quarterbacks in
the country. The issue is underre he's one of the
worst quarterbacks in the country, but they're protecting mem at
a very high level. Right now, we'll see what they
can do as past dates pass rush. But yeah, Illinois
defensively has been great now. Like I said, that offense
has really been good, better in the trenches than they
were last year. So yeah, I think that's seventeen and

(07:13):
a half point spread is kind of disrespectful to the
fighting a line nine And if I'm betting, I am
a betting man, and I'm betting the fighting line and
the cover that spread this Saturday night.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Good advice. Hey, how about Alabama Georgia? Kayln de Bor
gets his first taste of this rivalry at seven thirty
at early season matchup between these two programs. Are you
leaning a certain way in this game right now?

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yeah? It's an absolute coin flip. I think it's such
an interesting game. Obviously, it's the first game all the
year between two top five teams. You have arguably the
two best coaches in college football and Kirby Smarten and
Kaylen de Bor. You have two quarterbacks that are trying
to be first round picks in the NFL drafts, and
Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe. I lean, Georgia, I think
it's a coin flip. I do lean George is a

(07:54):
little bit. Last year in the SEC title game, Jaylen
Moreau had his worst game of the entire season with
like a fifty point two grade, and the issue was
that Georgia was able to send their pass at him,
and Jayla Moreau when he's under pressure really struggles. Now,
when he's kept clean, he has time to find a
receiver's deep down field. But he's the guy that wants
to hold onto the football as long as he can.

(08:14):
And I think Georgia should probably die off the blitz
once again against him this weekend and see if what
happens there. So they probably will. And then on the
other side of the ball, the question is ken George's receivers,
who have been disappointing so far, can they separate against
a really good Alabama secondary. So it honestly could be
a low scoring game all things considered, and I think
George was gonna win a in a very very close game.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
It's gonna come down the wire in my opinion, Max,
I'm gonna flip it over to the NFL. The Steelers
win over the Chargers twenty to ten with kind of
a dominant defensive victory there. Obviously, this is an elite
defense big hit there though, with Alex Highsmith going down.
But I have to ask, and I know it's a
little early, but is it time that we can start

(08:54):
having that question? We can start questioning Nick Herbig. Can
he see some more Obviously he's going to with Alex
Highsmith out, but can we see him sharing some more
snaps there? Just with how explosive he is off the line.
It's kind of like a little mini TJ. Watt over
there at the left, and it obviously helps that he's
training under TJ. Watt. Your thoughts on her Big and

(09:16):
how he might handle the next couple of weeks while
Highsmith is.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Out, Yeah, I'm excited for it. I'm ex tell you that,
you know, Alexis Alexis is out because I think he's
one of the better, you know, number two edge defenders
we have in the NFL. But Nick Kurkbig is a
guy that I liked a lot coming out of college,
So I'm excited to see him kind of take on
an increased role over the next few weeks, however long
he's out right now, and you know, Nick Kirkbig is
a guy that right now is graded out and a
lead level now, granted it is not a very very

(09:41):
limited sample size. Yeah, he only played fifty three snaps
this year, but right now he is a ninety one
point seven grade and a ninety one point two passage
and grade, which is among the best in the NFL
right now, So listen, small sample size, let's see what
it looks like on a bigger sample size. But what
he's out there, he's dominating right now as a passenger especially,
so I'm excited to see what could do in a
full time role now with Alex f I Smith out,

(10:03):
and honestly, he could show that he could be a
starting ends defender down the line from the Steelers or
maybe for someone else honestly too. So yeah, I'm really
excited to see Nick Herbay if you can continue this
dominance on a bigger sample size now with Alex Alex Heismith.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Out, and we'll flip over to the offense real quick.
They've been talking our Artie Smith. This offense has been
speaking it the damn. The dam is going to break.
It's getting close. We're close to breaking through from what
you saw against that Chargers team. Obviously, top I think
going into this game like number one defense, if not
number two defense in the nation. Uh, and we're cleaning

(10:38):
up penalties there On the offense with the Steelers. Do
you think that's the case? Are you seeing I guess
glimpses of the damn breaking Is there more to this offense?
Can they put up more points or is it gonna
be more of, Hey, let's just do just enough to
win the game, and that's kind of how we're gonna
do it.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, I think it's the ladder. I don't know if
this is an offense it is gonna all of a
sudden explode, Like there's some offense in the NFL that
you look at and say, Okay, they've had a few
rough weeks, but like you know, the talent is there
for them to become one of the best in the league. Steelers,
I'm not really thinking that right now. I think the
offensive line is formed a lot better than last year, honestly,
and there's still some issues in that receiving corps I think.

(11:17):
And Justin Fields, I've been really impressed by him. He's
actually great out pretty well, but he's not like a
superstar quarterback round it's like that either. So I think
it's obviously a defensive led team. As they've always been
under Mike Tomlin and that offense, I think now more
than ever though it's proven that, hey, we could support
that defense though now you know, right, so that's going
to be that. Yeah, exactly, It's a huge thing for

(11:38):
the Steelers. So I'm curious to see what happens in
Russell Wilson's fully healthy. I think Justin Fiels has done
enough to earn that starting job now until proven otherwise,
so I will see what they could do from from
here on out. But yeah, I think I've been impressed
by the offense, but I don't think it's an offense
that's about to, you know, break the damn like if
he had explore its like that. I think this is
kind of who they're going to be the rest of
the year.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
It's progress because already Smith it's about breaking the day,
and with Matt Canada it was just damn.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Damn.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
Speaking of damn, one one last question, Max CHADWICKKFF dot com.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Damn.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
How about last night? How about Jayden Daniels. What a
performance by the rookie. I mean, look, I don't want
to do the hyperbole thing here, but that's a pretty
rare rookie performance on a stage that we saw last
night on Monday Night. Some of the throws he made,
including the one that ended the game, my goodness.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Max unbelievable, Honestly unbelievable. He had a ninety five point
nine grade in that game. It's one of the highest
we've ever given out to a rookie quarterback in a game.
And I believe I've heard a last night. He broke
the completion percentage record for rookie in a game by
ninety one percent in that game, which is this absolutely ridiculous.
I mean, he was fantastic, honestly. And yeah, and a

(12:48):
year where the rookie quarterbacks like kayleb Williams and Bownexa
kind of struggled so far. I thought Ball actually looked
a little bit better this past weekend, but James Daniels
looks like the guy right now. So it kind of
sucks for me because I calls for the PFF comfortable show.
Dlan Wassman actually had Jadon Daniels in his QB one
entering the draft, and I thought he was crazy for it,
and now he's kind of rubbing it in my face
right now, which I don't love. Uh. Yeah, Jadan Daniels.

(13:11):
Credit to him, he looked awesome last night. We see
what he could do the rest of the season, but
that gitterally was one of the best games where a
rookie quarterback I've ever seen.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Max Chadwick PFF dot com. Thanks for your time, Bude.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
