Speaker 1 (00:00):
Man, We've got a lot to cover here with our
good friend Will Palacchick. He's the play by play voice
of Charlotte FC. You hear their games all the time
here on the Upstates home of that fine club Fox
Sports Upstate. Will welcome back, and first of all, congrats
as the official voice of that great club up there.
You're a playoff announcer, my friend, and you guys are
making a run. Congrats to you, man, the.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Greenville gentleman, John ellis good to be with you, my friend,
the green Tale gentleman.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Well, I feel like I need a green jacket with
that on the lapel there. Well, look, it's just been
a storybook. As we mentioned during the break here, it
feels like it was yesterday. It's been three years and
what a flash it's been. I mean, before you can
turn around, you guys are right now making a run
in the MLS. Is Orlando comes calling here, you're waiting
on that game here in the best of three. Just

(00:48):
walk me through this whole season from just start to
finish on a sort of a macro level in terms
of new coach obviously and in some of the storylines
he came into the season and the resiliency of this
operation with Charlotte Sports really needed something to hold on to.
We've talked about this before, what a story it's been.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Well, I think you have to even go back a
little bit further than the beginning of this year, because
at the end of last year, I think the club
felt pretty good about itself from the standing of you
get to the playoffs in year two, even though you know,
we talk about this difference between postseason and playoffs. They
got to the wild card round and lost, and I

(01:27):
think that there was a feeling that they had kind
of hit their ceiling with the previous manager, who originally
was an interim manager in Christian Latanzio, and they went
out and made a big bet and going and getting
a premier league level manager in Dean Smith, someone who
had gotten you know, a couple of teams promoted, and also,
when you think about it, a pretty celebrated time at

(01:48):
his childhood favorite club of aston Villa, and they really
come out and they were pretty shrewd about saying, look,
you know, this is a club that we feel like
we can build a foundation around this manager. The manager
came in and did some things that quite frankly, were
a bit of an affront to the way that a

(02:09):
lot of managers had come in. He said, we want
to build from a strong defense in a strong spine.
There are a lot of managers who've come in and
said those things, But the way that he went about
implementing his game model and utilizing his players, I think
really stood as a bit of a counterculture to the

(02:31):
way the league is. This league, if you watch it
and mass it is a high scoring league. Much of
the talent is concentrated, much of the talent and the
money is concentrated with the attacking players, whether it be
strikers or attacking midfielders or wingers. He said that in
order to win in this league, where a lot of
the talent is upfront, you have to have a strong,

(02:53):
solid defense, particularly because Charlotte of Ce's attack had been
very much uncelebrated, absent one player who was going off
on loan to a team in Italy at the beginning
of the year. So he basically realized, look, until we
get the players who can run with the hawses like
Inner Miami and some of the other teams that have
high powered offenses in this league, we got to be
strong and solid Defensively, he took a team that was

(03:15):
the second worst statistical defense in the league and made
it the best in the Eastern Conference this year, I believe,
with only thirty seven goals conceded in thirty four games,
which is astoundingly low. And it also took the goalkeeper
who should be the goalkeeper of the year and Christian
Kalina having an other world these these In terms of
shot stopping, there's a couple of metrics in the league

(03:36):
that have basically said he stops anywhere between eleven to
twelve shot twelve goals on average based on the way
that his season has gone. They've added some players on
the margins to the offense to help them, including Lee
Alabada pet Biel, and also they've brought back Carrol Spederowski
from Italy. But you also saw the emergence of Patrick Ajemon,
who was really turned into a developmental star, somebody who

(03:58):
they got in the draft last year. And the draft
has not necessarily always been a real flourishing point for
developing players. And yet Charloops he's got two players in
their starting lineup, Andrew Privet on the fence and then
Patrick Godemon up top, who have really been boons for them,
and Privot was a third round draft pick. Players never
come out of the third round of the MLS Super

(04:19):
Draft and turn into big stalwart players. Privet got himself
a second contract. Patrick Godimont is pretty much do one
at this point, led the team and goal contributions with
sixteen during the regular year. And somebody who is one
of the toughest guys to stop one v one with
his big frame and his developing technical ability. And it's
to put Charlotte's seen a position where I don't think
any peopley would have thought that they'd be in this

(04:39):
position going into a decisive Game three with the potential
to go to the MLS Conference in my finals.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
There's some information round there for you soccer fans, and're
gonna tell you something else. You go to Charlotte Footballclub
dot com and they're doing some great stuff here, including
at the fillmore in Charlotte. A big watch party here
that's coming up on Saturday the ninth, five pm as
Charlotte of C's taken an Orlando City SC must win game.
Go to Charlotte at football Club dot com. A lot

(05:06):
of great stuff going on. Hey, well as somebody who
is learning the game and learning the structure of MLS
and soccer. And for a lot of our listeners out
here who are still catching on to what this playoff
format feels and looks like. If we're just crawling out
of a hole here and we don't know much about it,
and I'm certainly not suggesting I do. You know I do,

(05:26):
But for listeners out there that might not, what does
this playoff series look like? What is what is the format?
It's a best of three?

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Right, yes, so this is This is the second year
in this particular playoff model. Basically, when the TV rights
shifted to Apple TV, there was an appetite for more playoffs,
and in order to satisfy that, they came up with
the best of three first round series. In addition to that,

(05:58):
you got the added value benefit of each team that
makes basically pass the wild card round. They have a
one game wild card for the eight to nine position,
not too dissimilar for what you see in the NBA,
but that basically is to play for the eighth seeds.
You have one game that basically is in the Western
Conference one game in the Eastern Conference to determine who

(06:18):
the eighth playoff seed will be then one plays a
two play seven, three, six, and four to five, and
all that you played a best of three series. Each
team gets one home game and then the team who's
the higher seeded team gets the decisive third game. In
the first year of this format, last year, only one
of the teams that was a lower seed got beyond

(06:38):
the first round, and it was actually the eighth seed
in the Western Conference. Kansas City beat their cross state
rival Saint Louis City, who was in their inaugural season,
which was a pretty big upset at the time. This year,
we've already seen a couple of teams go through Minnesota
on the Western Conference side, New York Red Bulls on
the Eastern Conference side. And the one thing about this
past year as well, only two or three of the

(07:01):
series last year went to a game number three. Well,
this year in the Eastern Conference, three of the four
series overall have already gone to a game number three,
and a couple as well in the Western Conference as well.
So it really has become a more parody driven league,
and I think the series part of it kind of
takes care of the almost unluckiness of a single elimination round.

(07:26):
It does go to single elimination when you're inside the
last date and beyond, so it will look like more
of a traditional type tournament from then on out. But
one thing that's unique about this round two as well
is that after ninety minutes they do not play ext
of time. They go straight to penalties after ninety minutes.
So that was what happened in Charlotte of Ce's game
number two. After ninety they played to a scoreless draw.

(07:48):
Charlotte went the penalties, and I mentioned that goalkeeper of
the Year candidate, he's pretty good at seeing penalties too.
We saved seven penalties in Charlotte of Ce's five overall
penalty shootouts, which he participatesed in three of them, and
they're verber a few who are better than him at
doing so well.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
It sounds like this opportunity is right there in front
of charlottef C. Will Palatchick to play by play voice
for Charlotte FFC and the surveyor of so much more
in the world of sports joins us here and it
ties nicely into temper sports entertainment. Obviously, good friends of
all of us here having a huge weekend here because
obviously you have this playoff run going on with Charlotte

(08:25):
FFC and for the first time in franchise history. Oh,
they're Munich bound, Germany bound, Panthers head and overseas with
Xavier Ligette, and I wish Laguette was on dollar Bill.
I really was. He was in the streets of Munich
on dollar Bill. It's going to be fun to see
if this team can can get a win. But what
a good moment it is to get some international recognition
and to be on that stage. Man, it's very cool.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
And even you roll it back to a couple of
weeks ago with the Great Concerts of Carolina. That oh,
absolutely whole lot of a whole lot of great work
for our friends in the western part of the Carolina
is the that needed our help very much. And all
the money that was raised, you know, big kudos as
well to Eric Church as well as uh as well
as our friend Marty Smith who is also part of that,

(09:10):
and then as well, that was so.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Cool and and just and and what what Tepper and
his wife Nicole were able to do in terms of
the proceeds and just opening up the gates and understanding, look,
this is community. It was a it was a gesture
that was Uh, you know, honestly, should should be taken
more note of I'm right there with you.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Incredible civic trust that they showed by doing that, and uh,
and then thinking about the first playoff game in Charlotte
of c history at home, uh the weekend after that.
So uh, there's definitely a lot to like from that perspective.
And then you know, with the Panthers here, look, I
think that for a lot of people, you know, this year,
the beginning of it, it felt a lot more of

(09:51):
kind of like, Okay, this is the same. But I
think you're starting to see now this organization has some
forward th thinking type philosophies, and a lot of that
starts with Dan Morgan and Bran Tillis. I think they
drafted well. I think, you know, having a one hundred
percent hitting percentage is a very hard thing to do.

(10:14):
I'm not suggesting that they did that, but I think
you're seeing a lot of the decisions they've made in
the offseason and they've made in the last couple of
weeks have started to pan out. I do wonder what
the situation is at quarterback right now, because at the
same point in time, while Bryce Young is this week's starter,
Dave Canalis has been loathed to really commit to anything.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
It's interesting, it is interesting. I was going to interrupt
you here. I find that interesting. And I find that Yain,
you can tell me if you disagree on this. I
find it the just theory here. It's it's a sign
of a coach who understands Bryce Young has played for
a guy like Nick Sabean. He can handle that type
of communication, and he understands that he has not won
this job yet because let's face it, Bryce Young first

(10:55):
two weeks of the season will it was not pretty
at all. It was very bad. He's still We've got
some work to do. It's been good. But I actually
like this approach by Dave Well.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
I think the one thing it is too is that
I think it keeps a constant motivational standard. And I
know that he said that Bryce is not outwardly motivated,
but I think he also understands that he can kind
of take the tough love part of it as well.
I haven't gotten into the whole part of oh well,
this all means that Bryce is in his guy, etc.
And so on, because I do think that he understands

(11:26):
and I think the organization in a larger sense, understands
that the easiest way back to contention, relevance, whatever you
feel like the north Star is the easiest way back
to that is with it working with Bryce. Now, Bryce
could be beyond repair Bryce. This could be a blip
in the radar, and it could go back to being

(11:47):
like it was the first two weeks and much of
last year in the next couple of weeks, depending on
the way things go in Germany and the rest of
the regular year. But I think they all understand that
it has to be like this, and and they gained
nothing with platitudes and false love and gassing him up
for no reason. They know that this is a very

(12:09):
pivotal part of their building project and they're not going
to get anywhere by by being waxing poetic with him.
They need it to be the guy they drafted out
of Alabama number one overall, and if it's anything short
of that, then they've got to punt and figure out
what their next modus operandi is. And then I think
that's that's them being fair to him and not being

(12:32):
fair to the organization, Because if you believe the report's
coming out of going into week three, they basically was
going to be a mutiny. Price Young started another game
going into the Vegas game, and I think maybe.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Johnson had something to do with that. I'm just theoretic,
as I've got a Steeler fan right across.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
That's true now. The other but the other part of
this too is that I think they also realized that
this is also just a part of that larger plan,
and I think that that when it comes down to it,
they understand what this all means in terms of not
only their own job security, but the security of the franchise,
and they realize, I got to take care to other

(13:10):
guys over there. So I think that part of it
is them being fair to everybody involved, but also being
fair to Bryce singularly, because they know that they feel
like they can at least get better out of him
as long as they're straight with him.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
When you watch this team for thirty years like I have,
and I'm sure you've been close to that, if not
as much, you get a feel for things. You kind
of get a sense, and you know, my sixth sense
about this team is usually right, and then I'm usually
dead wrong about the real analysis. I'm getting a sense
that there is a good turn in the right direction here,
because an offensive line travels, it goes places, it's permanent,

(13:48):
and you've got the best offensive line this team has
had collectively. I dare say maybe two thousand and eight,
you go that far back, but will we've got to
wrap this up. A big game coming up for Charlotte FFC.
Great insight on the Panthers. I always appreciate that, and
great insight on the soccer world because we're still learning here,
but we love watching the action. The MLS is coming
up audi twenty twenty four MLS Cup Playoffs on November ninth,

(14:10):
Round one, best of three, Orlando and Charlotte, six pm,
and this man right here will be calling the action
and probably going viral. We'll polechick. You're the best man.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Thank you guys so much for all the work you
guys have done over at a wonderful point nine Fox Sports.
You guys are a great affiliate. We love the patronage

great affiliate of ours.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
That's too kind, man. Have a great night and safe tripman.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Thanks guys, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
There goes. We'll polectic
