Toen Erwin van Maanen in de jaren negentig door de wouden van Transsylvanië wandelde, kwam hij een ree tegen die door wolven was gedood. Dit wekte zijn interesse en passie voor de wolf. Vervolgens zette hij zich in om onder andere de wolven in Roemenië te beschermen, door gebieden aan te wijzen waar de wolf veilig kon leven.
