(00:31):
Driven Podcast is with us. Emily, you're making your gi return.
We're so happy you're back. It's been a minute. How
are we now?
Speaker 1 (00:38):
I can't believe it's been a year. That's crazy.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
I can't have too that's been too long, a whole
twelve months. What's new, Pillasten? How are you? How's Female Driven?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Oh it's good. I was just telling it before we
started recording that I've actually been to the movies a lot,
like for me, a lot so far in theaters because
there are so many things I wanted to see in the theaters.
So yeah, Female Driven is going great. We've taken a
little bit of a break, but I think Tyler definitely
listened to my last episode that we did on Chicago.
(01:07):
That was very fun.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, yeah, you know, you know I did to the
whole Female Driven crew.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah, Kristin and Rachel.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah yeah, Kristin, Rachel, thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
You did it. You did it on Chicago.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Two thousand and two is Chicago?
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Okay, I will be I'll be checking that out later. Yeah,
that's amazing. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
If you were not plugged, if you were not plugged
into Female Driven, you must do so at this very moment.
Followed them on Instagram. I'm at Female Driven.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Part off right now.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
And you know, as long as you fulfill both requirements.
Checking out this conversation with Emily on g I, but
then also following Female Driven on Social.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Check subscribe, Hause, come back.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Five star review city. How we do it around here, Emily,
I think it's time to get to business. So you
are here, of course to preview also slight review, but
also to preview this summer in film. So we have
similar to last year, but with some differences. We are
keeping a similar format in that we've broken down this
(02:11):
summer's upcoming releases into different categories or genres. As one
may say, you've already seen some of these films that
we're going to get into so we can't wait to
hear the official Emily Olero Jones review. But then also
Brad and our audience, we're super excited to hear your
thoughts on films that are going to be released. The action,
(02:31):
the comedy, the drama, the blockbusters. We even have some
horror selections which I can't wait to get both of
your thoughts. Yes, yes, we will go in order. But
with that in mind, let's go ahead and start with
the blockbusters. With the movies that are coming with a
lot of hype, it's giving you got to see it
in the theater if you're going to take the time
(02:52):
to check them out. And we have two that I
want to begin this conversation with. On June twenty seventh,
f one, the movie is hitting theaters, and then that
next week on July second. I know Brad has thoughts
on this one. Jurassic World Rebirth is coming out. And
(03:12):
you are the guest of honor, We're gonna start with you.
Where are you at with these two blockbusters? Which one
are you gonna see? Which one are you gonna see first?
Are you excited for both? Philliston? We got some big
stars in both of these. We're talking kid, we're talking
Scar Joe, we're talking with herschel Ali Philison, what you got, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
That's right. I think i'd like to see the I
think i'd like to see F one. That just looks
like a fun like event movie. I definitely enjoyed seeing
when it came out a few years ago forward v Ferrari.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
That was fun, Like, oh, yeah, I'm not an incredible movie.
Yeah I'm not a.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Car person, but that'll drop me.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
In because except except the Fast series, Oh my gosh,
that's the one exception you make.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
We're going on our side quest with the.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Side quest is gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
We will.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
We will continue to offer Brad a seat on the.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Second when you're here.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Your family, Oh family, there's nothing more important. No, thank you, Dominic. Right,
we could just pivot and make this, let's the most
furious episode and just fit in the summer.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
I'd be fine with that.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I gotta go, and Brad can. I was gonna say
the Zoom room, but we're on stream yard, we're face.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
And this is when I checked out exactly.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Okay, but that's how the podcast ended forever.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
But back to these two. Okay, I'm so so you're
in for ball f one the movie, and then okay,
so what are your thoughts on Jurassic World. This is
probably the biggest biggest picture of the summer, is it not?
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Probably it will make the most money. I lost faith
faith in the franchise a while ago. I don't think
that's a hot take, Like I just I really think
the first one is the best one for nineteen ninety three.
I think it even looks better than all and.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
It still holds up.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
It's so good, just like anytime. It's if I'm in
a hotel room and that movie comes on, I'm tyler,
I'm seated. I'm seated for it.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
It's like anytime.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Anytime Twister comes on, I'm gonna watch Twister like it's
so good.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
It's all good. But it's a case of the original
these years later, you've.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Never seen it. Miss this house, in that house, and
then come after you. Twister is incredible.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Helen Hunt Hunt, Yeah, she's an icon and that's what
all the girl is dressed like now they want to
be as cool as Helen. No, I don't know. If
it gets like okay ish reviews, maybe I'll check it out,
but I just I don't know it to use another term, tyler,
it fell off. It fell off at like two was
(05:54):
still fun, but three was really bad. And then I
was just like, oh, I don't know, I don't know anymore.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah, the trailers dope.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I've seen I would say maybe the last five or
six movies, basically every movie I've been to this year.
It seems like I've had this. Of course is hyperbole,
but I'm gonna go with it. It seems like I've
also witnessed the Jurassic trailer. I've seen it so many
times in the theater now. Yeah, and by no means
what I classify myself as a Jurassic historian. I'll leave
(06:26):
that for YouTube. But I thought the trailer was really
well done. Is it going to get me to to
see it in theaters? Probably not, admittedly, but I would.
I'll check it out once it hits streaming. I think
the cast is solid. I just think the way they
present it is like, Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna get
this one. I haven't seen a drastic movie in years,
but I'm willing one. And I don't have the baggage
that Emily.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
I don't know. Nothing capture, nothing can recapture using those
models like, yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
I'm just Winston Studios.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yes, I'm just saying what everyone has been saying for years.
But there's just an overliance on CGI so that everything
kind of looks cheap now, Like if the movie Titanic
was made today, it would just be green screen. It's
just like, Oh, there's something about a great, a really
well made nineties like actions thriller so good.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
I did not expect that I would stick up for
Jurassic World on this episode when the velociraptor whatever it's
called comes out and they're like, oh my gosh, you're
probably not going to survive and sign me up. I'm
willing to check that out.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Okay, Okay, I like I will probably watch, like you said,
you know, if it's if there's like a marathon on.
It always comes down to when I'm in a hotel
room because that's the only time I get TV. When there's
like TNT. If there's like a marathon like a Jurassic
Park Mares, I'm sure I will sit and watch an
aspect that I want.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
I want to kick the brad after this an aspect
I think about now at this stage in my movie going,
I was gonna say, Career Movie Going Left and Career
here on gimmick Infringement. There are certain movies that are
so enhanced if you see it in the theater. Oh yeah,
and so I'm totally backtracking my previous stands. But I
wonder for both F one and Jurassics, I would I
(08:15):
would imagine a lot of our audience and your audience
are thinking of seeing one or both of these films.
The experience is so enhanced if you actually go to
the theater versus if I just wait till it hits Netflix. Okay,
it's gonna be convenient, it's gonna save me some money.
But I know if I see Jurassic or F one
in Imax, that experience is going to be incredibly hard
(08:36):
to replicate. I don't know if I told you. I've
been telling brad Our audience this. I've seen the most
Imax movies in my life this year. I'm at like
three already, and there's no going back for me.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Same there was something that I there was something that
I watched recently. I was trying to look it up.
I can't remember what it was, and oh, I actually
think it was Jurassic Park. We watched the Jess hadn't
seen the last one. Jurassic World three was a dominion.
I think that's what it was. Yeah, it was like, well,
it's on, let's just watch it. It's you know, I
can't say it's free. It's part of our subscription service. Yeah,
(09:12):
and I'm pretty sure I called it let me see,
all right. So when we were watching it, I looked
at it and I went, I'm pretty sure this is
shot on film. It just had like a greeny and
it was and it was just really it just felt
it felt older and in the best kind of way,
it's not really really really good. And and that movie
was partially shot on film. It sucks that the story
(09:34):
was so bad, but it was shot on It was
shot on film, and it was like, that story was
so terrible.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
That's not the Haunted House one, is it?
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Oh God, that's that's the second one? I think, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I hated that so much. Those movies got so bad, man.
But though like the the laser guided tracking system for
the Murder Rappers, yeah, it was just also stud but
so Number one. I told Tyler this. I can't remember
(10:05):
if we were recording it or not, but when Jurassic
Park three came out and big big William H. Macy
fan at the time, like Fargo had come out not
that long before, and yes, yes, uh Tataloni, they they
weird cast like that cast is so weird.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Uh. Real actors, real.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Actors, really good actors. Yes, I did. I did have
my ringtone was the Kirby Payton Tyle plus or whatever
it is ringtone for a long time though a satellite phone.
Uh part YEP. So when I saw the trailer for
Jurassic World Rebirth and they have terodactyls or whatever those
(10:47):
things are, someone's gonna correct me. Some dino nerds gonna come,
who's your terodactyls. I don't give a ship flying dinosaur
bird things flying. I I immediately was like, I hope
it's not like three. I hope they don't rehash three
stuff because that movie was bad. But I'll say what
I said. Then we were going to like Shock a Lot,
and we were going to like we were going to
(11:09):
premieres of like art movies and really good movies. I
love that movie, by the way.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
I miss that when yes, a movie like Chack a
Lot or The Hours would have.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Like opening it was so good, one of my favorite
movies of all time.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
So movies made for adults that would just open just
like just like a drama.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Yeah you know, yeah yeah, Fit in the Sky and
just like there were so many movies that came out
around that time period. They were like that. But but
Mike shout out to Mike Climb and looked at me
and said, this movie is gonna be terrible, But who
cares dinosaurs, And that's how I approach them. Yeah, it's
just gonna be fun in a theater, a communal experience,
and if it's terrible, we'll all know it and we'll
(11:49):
all feel the terrible together.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
And with about three, we wouldn't have that meme of
the gosh saying Alan, yes, we wouldn't have it. Wou
for that.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
So so because the communal experience that's also a part
of it.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Uh F one looks fun. I'm leary of Apple. I'm
leary of the Apple made movies. I started watching Murder
Robot yesterday. Uh I it's I think it's awesome. I
think it's so they're like half an hour episodes and
I'm and they're like pretty high quality. I've clipped through
the whole six episodes that are out now in a
(12:26):
couple hours. Uh, and it's and it's great, but I
know it's still haven't I'm waiting for Jess watch together.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Yeah. I started Your Friends and Neighbors series with John
hamm oh very nice, super good on Apple Yea, was.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
It the the Wolf's I think is what it was?
The the Clooney brad Pitt movie. Critically, I'm leary of
Apple made movies, so f one scares me a little bit.
But I still want to see it because it looks entertaining.
This hack Jurassic World rebirth. I'm in, like if if
they're gonna lean into it, into the horror of it
(13:03):
more than the goofy DNA stuff, And I know we're
getting it. I already saw one of the dinosaurs. It
looks apocalyptically stupid. But as long as I'm getting a
horror movie with dinosaurs and like, it should feel terrifying,
not Oh I wonder if they'll escape. No, it's it's
these these things will kill everybody. You're this That thing
will eat your whole boat. Why are we not more
(13:25):
afraid here? Why are we like we're just gonna go
f around on this Island. Yeah, and I and I'm
I'm excited to see how that looks uh. I'm tentatively
optimistic for this. But we're missing two on your at
it in the comments. We're ignoring fantastic four first steps.
We're Superman? What are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Like?
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Those are?
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Those?
Speaker 2 (13:46):
Are?
Speaker 1 (13:47):
The movies looked very silly.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
It looks silly in the best way. We need some hope,
That's all I'm saying. I don't need Dark right now.
I love Cavell. I love Cavell uh as Superman.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
I never had a problem and the story reason Snyder Okay, yeah,
I I I I don't mind Snyder the way a
lot of people do. I actually like the Snyder verse
just fine. I thought some of the movies were terrible,
but yeah, really really terrible. But also I don't care.
I got I got old Batman and a robot suit.
(14:20):
All I wanted from The Dark Knight returns kid in
Me was that, and I got it. I'm happy with that.
Even though Martha is what Save the Day? I thought
that was stupid in their Room Dosday. But but I'm
hopeful for this one.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
You know, I surprisingly like Affleck.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
He was great. I liked he's my favorite on screen Batman.
I like my favorite Bruce Wayton, but I liked like
them as.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
The older I liked old brut Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
I thought it, but this this one looks great. I
love Nathan Nathan Fillion. I trust Zack Snyder enough with
these properties to know he's not gonna, you know, polish
up a turd. So I'm really excited for this. I
can't wait to see Crypto on screen because Crypto is
a menace, and I can't wait to see how that
(15:05):
plays with the actual movie. And fantastic for Rebirth. Freya
went to Thunderbolts with us, which was a mistake, but
that's a.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Daddy a daughter movie. Did you get emotional?
Speaker 3 (15:22):
No, I got scared because the void was in that film,
avoiding everybody, and she looked concerned the whole time. Like
she looked scared, it was terrified. And it was like
the immediately bludgeing you with like with language stuff in
the beginning, and I was like, this isn't this is
not what I signed up for for a Marvel movie
with my kid who's she's turning eight, that she's not
(15:46):
like ten twelve, And I.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Didn't notice that.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
I was surprised at Parker tone for sure, and I
think it needed it for this, for that movie, for
that cast, for those characters, and that's fine. But she
was so stoked about She's like, what's the fantastic Who's
that this thing? Okay? And then spoiler alert the teaser
at the end with the Fantastic four ship coming through,
(16:09):
she was the biggest pop in the theater. She would
that's the ship. She's so excited for this, So I'm
excited for it. I'm all in. I don't know how
you guys feel about the big the big budget superhero
movies coming out. We already had one, technically two this
year we're getting another one plus Superman.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Uh I.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
So I was telling Tyler I did see Thunderbolts and
I wasn't crazy about it. I have the same thing
I had. I've got Marvel fatigue years ago, like years ago.
But my husband wanted to see this one, and I
like Florence Pew, so I was like, Okay, we'll see it.
She's a great actress, and so I love my actresses,
(16:52):
so I was like, okay, if she's leading it, like,
how bad can it be? I just I don't know.
I lost it and I love Julia Louis Dreyfus as well,
so I was happy to see her pop up pop
up in Marvel and I think she's so good. But
I was just I didn't connect to any because I've
missed the last several so I didn't know who who died.
(17:14):
Coke Captain America.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Was half of half of it is built around the
Disney TV property, and.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
I was like, what, who are these people? I don't
know who you are. I don't care. And then the
Depression Monster. I was just like, I don't this is
too real. I didn't need the Depression Monster. It literally
reminded me of like every antidepressive commercial when like the
personification of depression is just like a big storm cloud.
(17:42):
But it's that guy, it's this person.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Did you guys see topp gn Maverick.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
You know what I didn't see that.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
I did not.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
I continue to I can't even talk to you anymore,
I see.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
No, it literally went black when you said I can't
talk to you anymore.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
It's awesome. It's awesome.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Yeah, yeah, that's one right, you want to see that one?
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Yeah, no, you know you can see it on Paramount
Plus though, like this. I watched it. Actually, I can't
say anything. I watched it this past week.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
So for the first time, why did you bring that up?
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Because Bob in in Thunderbolts is his call sign in
Top Gun Mavericks. He's a pilot, is Bob. And now
there's a theory out there, right like that or the
same one? Yeah, yeah, yeah, but he's he. I thought
he was fantastic as century as as Bob. I felt
(18:35):
the same way. I felt like that movie leveled up
way too quickly. It was like we're just gonna go
like giant scale all of a sudden, where it was
like small, like breakout thing, and then it just exploded,
and it was there was just a lot of moving
around from spot to spot to spot with no clear
connection between all of them. That if you didn't have
a pre established idea of these characters, it's really hard.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
I knew Florence Pugh and like, yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
She is a black widow and and and then if
you didn't watch anything after that, it's yeah, that's.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Why I was just yeah, oh, Bucky, of course. But
I don't think I even saw a Winter Soldier. I'm
not kidding. I just know who's the fast fan.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Is it's my favorite. It's my favorite.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Okay. I just know he who he is, and he's
a great actor. So I'm like, anytime you see these performers,
you know they they're good.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
Winter Soldier is a white knuckle thriller. It is not
a typical Marvel movie until the very end.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Yeah, I notice they've gotten like prestige actors to do these.
I mean, I'm sure they're paying them like an insane
amount of money, but like Harrison Ford, yeah, but now
they have like if.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Like he asked he wanted to do it, he was
just like, I just yeah, He's just like I just
want to. I like doing these big budget things. I
want to be in the Marvel universe.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
That's so fun. But I think, yeah, Fantastic four. I
was like, yeah, these are real actors. Like Vanessa Kirby
is fantastic. I love her. I would see it just
because she's in it.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Honestly, and it looks way different.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
So I was like, I'm like, is that why she
wasn't I was thinking, is that why she wasn't in
Mission Impossible Final Reckoning? Because she was the best part
of the.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Last one too, which we'll talk about next.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
We were missing Vanessa. I was like, oh my god,
the villain is not good.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
All right, well that's that's probably a good idea to
move on to Mission Impossible. Mind you, I have not
seen this yet. I haven't had a window. I haven't.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Oh no, we'll forgive him.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
Okay, So our next I will meete myself.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
To Brad's point, and just for audience sake, we have
five categories remaining. So next we'll go into action, followed
by comedy, drama, family, and we will conclude with horror,
and then we'll cap the episode off with some final
kind of big picture questions. No pun intended, but as
Brad laid it out, let's discuss action. Okay, Emily, a
(20:56):
few titles I want to throw your way. Of course,
as Brad mentioned, we have Mission Impossible, the Final Reckoning,
which is already out in theaters and we've seen it.
We want to hear your thoughts in a moment. Then
we also have Ballerina, which just came out as of
this recording just came out a few days ago. You
have also seen that. This is why Yeah, you are
our incomparable guest. And then we have some other titles
(21:20):
such as the Pickup, which comes out on August six.
This will be via Prime video, followed by Nobody To,
which will be released in theaters on August fifteenth. But
once again, let's start with what we know, Mission Impossible,
the Final Reckoning.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
What say you, I'm pretty much in alignment with a
lot of what the critics are saying, which is like,
it's not as good as the last one. It's not
as good as Dead Reckoning, it's not even as good
as like, I don't know, what if we're some of
the old like ghost Protocol and yeah, I don't know.
(21:58):
I think it was good. But as far as the
conclusion to like the Tom Cruise Cinematic Universe experience, Yeah, yeah,
the Tom Cruise Ethan Hunt timeline. I guess he's been
making these since the since the mid nineties. When did
(22:20):
the first one come out?
Speaker 3 (22:24):
He's thirty years yeah, he's like he's.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Going to be sixty.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Three now, yeah at least, yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Which is like crazy that he's still doing like like
this crazy stuff. But yeah, it definitely.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Known in nineteen sixty two.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
He's my mom. Yeah, my mom was born in sixty two. Yeah,
so he uh, I don't know, like there were some
really great action set pieces, and from what I understand,
the way he makes those because he's a producer, the
way he makes those is he decides on what huge
action set piece he wants to do, and they write
this script around it when.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
You can right. And it felt like that viewing Final Reckoning.
I was sharing with Brad that the highs of Final
Reckoning to me were as high as any of their
other am I films, but the lows were just so low.
I also had an issue with the runtime, which I've
noticed is just a thing about me as a moviegoer.
(23:21):
I don't know that most films need to be nearly
three hours hours, particularly Final Reckoning. That first forty five minutes.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
A lot of it, oh, and a lot of it
was just referencing the old movies.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
It was the lore leading into the.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Musician yes, and then with trailers Yeah. I was there.
We were there for like three hours.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
It was just too long.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
And during the like the submarine thing, I was like,
I know, if I leave now, because I had to
go to the bathroom so bad, I was like, I know,
if I right now, when I come back, this will
still be going and it's still going.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
To be trying to get the little key. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
right right, and again really really well shot. Yeah, the
finishing action piece with the planes, Yeah, immaculate, Probably the
greatest sequence I'll see all summer in theaters. But overall,
I agree with you. The issue is our expectations are
so high for this franchise because they've done so well,
(24:16):
and this one it just it In some ways it
reached those heights, but again the lows felt lower than
certainly dead reckoning.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Yeah, the writing and then yes, position, I mean mistakes
are always like world ending, like he's always saving the world.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
But nuclear warfare A I.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Know, but I just yeah, but AI being the villain,
I was just like, it's too amorphous. I don't know
how AI is, what's the AI, what's its motivation?
Speaker 2 (24:42):
I just so weird.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
But and I'm you know, I am. My podcast is
called female Driven. So I missed Vanessa Kirby, I missed
Rebecca Ferguson, Like Haley is great too, but I'm like,
oh no, I'm missing these other these other women. So yeah,
the cast was Palm is cool, but they gave her
two lines.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
We needed more Palm for sure.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
Yeah, she was crazy and I liked how crazy she wasn't.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Yeah, she maximized all her minutes and that we wanted
more palm minutes for more palm. Yeah, I couldn't agree
with you. More Brett get in here.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
You didn't want Mission impossible tows nyahal Back Thoondaway Newton.
She's awesome, but she she sort of like it ended.
She's alive. She survives the what was the name of
that virus? Begiven an Oh, we just we just ran
through all the mission impossible movies to set up for
going to see this film at some point when we
(25:43):
apparently don't drink any water before we head in. So
there's all these characters that survived. There's like the Australian
pilot guy from the second one that survives. There's all
kinds of characters they could easily bring back, many of
them female. The the one from Ghost pro a Call
that has the greatest gut shot punch I've ever seen
(26:05):
in a film. She just like slugs her in the
gut before kicking her out the window.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
Yes, they do. Yes, I love last She's a bad one.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Wait, it's uh begame with a Jake.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
No, Paula, I know she kicks they do out of
a window.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
But yeah, yeah, yeah, she.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Hasn't she's like not in movies anymore.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
No, no, no, no, she's she's only done like seven or
eight of them. This is we're thinking about me.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
I can't believe last they do agree to do that,
but she's still collecting dividends. But they get great actors
to come in to do these movies. It's so crazy.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Yes, yeah, it's it's absolutely nuts.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Uh. I know exactly what you're talking about, though.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Paula Patten, that's Jane Jane, her characters name.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
That was on the tip of my tongue. I remember
Paula Patten had a whole era where she would.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
Crashes.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
I remember Jumping Jumping the Broom.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Was that awful movie? Though, the franchise, No, it was
so bad. World of Warcraft it was I missed.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Just Warcraft, just Warcraft.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
And then over my husband got me to go see
that and I was so upset, wasn't she And this
was another terrible movie.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
I'm so sorry. Paula had an era. We loved it.
She was I saw I want to say it was
some human trafficking movie.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Called Traffic with a K.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Traffic with a K. Yeah, yeah, it was I just remember.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Her teeth and craft. You were trying to make her
into a sexy orc. I was like, what is happening?
Speaker 2 (27:45):
I mean would say that this was called warcraft.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
If you're just google like Paula, I'm meant to check
that out.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
I'm sure it's available on streaming because nobody would buy it, Like,
I guarantee, it's traffic.
Speaker 1 (27:58):
Bad Glench Club is in it for like two seconds.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
Yeah, she was getting her paycheck murdering a small town
TV series last year. She was in an episode and
that so at least she's still working. That's cool. I
was surprised they didn't bring her back. I don't know
what the story is there.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
She didn't get you know, who else was randomly in
it for I guess it was more than a hot second.
But I literally forgot until again, I was in a
hotel room. I swear to God, every time I'm in
a hotel room, there's going to be like the Bourn
series will be on, Twister will beyond h yeah, or
or the Mission Impossible, or there will be like a
(28:36):
Jurassic Park marathon happening. But yeah, like there were they
were doing an m I marathon and I was like, oh,
that's right.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
Jeremy Renner was, yeah, doesn't he have a music career
as well?
Speaker 1 (28:50):
They tried to make him, they tried to make him
the next born also, just he just never came up,
like it didn't stick with him. Like they were like,
let's try to make him Ethan Hunt. Let's try to
make him do some more.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
They could, They could have done it, but I don't
for whatever reason, it just didn't work. But who were they?
I can't remember. Tom Cruise said like, the only way
that I do another one or if there'd be another
mission impossible that he would produce at least is if
so and so would take over for him. And I
can't remember who it was.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
It wasn't Jeremy Renner.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Though, No, it was somebody else. But they were like, no,
I'm not doing that kind of stunt commitment.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Huh.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
It wasn't Jeremy Renner. It was somebody. This was like
within the last week or two this happened.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
It wouldn't be that guy who's like, you know how
they aren't really quote unquote movie stars anymore.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Yeah, oh, yes, yes it is, yes, yes on Twisters
and from what's his name? Powell Glenn Powell. Yeah, he
just said no because because he's like, I'm not doing
all those stuff.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Is the Tom Cruise Yes, also.
Speaker 3 (29:59):
Topped on Maverick.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Right.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Yeah, the era of like the movie star who kind
of more plays themselves and now it's just like actors,
you know, like the days of Julia Roberts and Tom
Cruise are kind of over. Except we do still have
Tom Cruise, but I don't know, it's just not the same.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
No, and he and he's excitedly we should probably move
off of this, but he's talking about doing another film.
He wants to do a less Grossman movie. And I
couldn't be even more excited about this. Tyler, do you
know who that is? No, I do tropic thunder character.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
So okay, Tom okay TC, Yeah, give me that.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
All day long. If he could make that work with
Ben Stiller.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
I'm interested in his next move. It'll be.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Wait one more thing before before we leave am I
because because I saw it at an AMC theater, we
got the iconic Nicole Kidman commercial.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
Yes, she walks up.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
That's really funny for magic, And then like right after that,
his little intro came, Oh spoiler, but Tom Cruise comes
on before the movie starts and it's like, thank you
so much for coming. But it was literally like Nicole
Kevin and then Tom I was like, oh my god,
my divorced parents are.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
That's so funny. Wow, I know that his rant quote
his rant, I don't. I don't know if fireworks just
went off. I can't see his rant. During the filming
of Dead Reckoning when he went off on the crew,
Tom was right, Like I listened back to it at
resurface and it's like, yeah, he was right about everything.
(31:37):
Everything he was saying was like people are out of work,
people are losing their homes, and you're gonna come in
here and jeopardize this film and it's gonna shut down.
We are not shutting this down. If you do something
dumb like this, you're gone. I'll replace you. You're fired.
And it was just like everybody was like, listen to
this rant and it's like he was totally right, like
you had a job to do, you didn't do the job.
(31:58):
And he went off on them and somebody recorded it,
which I thought was kind of icky that they're recording
this when he's like, I'm trying to keep everybody afloat,
like we're literally keeping the movie industry alive. It's on
life support right now, and we're trying to give people
jobs during COVID and uh, I have like he went
off and he seems really intense, like you way too
(32:19):
much pressure on himself to like uphold all of it.
But what do you.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
Think would happen if Tom Cruise and James Cameron like
entered the same room?
Speaker 2 (32:33):
What it just work implode?
Speaker 1 (32:36):
I don't know, Like if they tried to.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
Work together, I can't.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Somebody I saw a recent thing about James Cameron where
they were like, what if we try this, or like
had a suggestion talked about. Yes, that was Sigourney Weaver
that I talk about how.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
Terrible it was working with him. Yeah, but he I
don't know, would it literally be like Batman versus the Man.
I don't know if Tom Cruise and.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
Chase Cam I just don't think it would work. I
just think they're too much control from both people. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Well, the next one, Emily, you also saw Ballerina, and
this is the John Wick franchise is in a fascinating
place right now because this is the first sort of
tentacle of John Wick, one of the most Yeah. One
of the the John mcuniverse, well said, one of the
most lucrative action franchises really of a generation. It's been
(33:32):
incredibly successful, one of my favorite action franchises ever. And
now we have Ballerina, female driven podcast. The Stars have
a lined and you are here. I have not seen it.
I know Brad has not seen it yet. Should we
go see Ballerina? Did live up to the hype?
Speaker 1 (33:49):
Hell? Yes, you should see it? Should Okay? Did you
enjoy a Toomic Blonde?
Speaker 3 (33:58):
I can't remember? That was so long ago.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Okay, what if I told you I haven't seen that
all the way?
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Okay, well, now you have to see it with Charlie's
But you enjoyed. If you enjoy Tomic Moon, yes, you
will enjoy Ballerina. Is it so silly? Yes? I don't care.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
That's what I heard.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
It's ninety five action, that's but yes, and yes, see
it on the big screen. It looks so good and
it was so much fun. And I have not seen
the John Wick movies, but I went to see this
because an A Diarmaus is leading it.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
So you mean Tom Cruise's reported girlfriend?
Speaker 2 (34:31):
No, come on, girl, I did not know about this.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
I love her.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
The threads were weaving.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Or I was going to say this was the natural
transition into this is aculable.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
No, she's great. She's great, And we have again these
these movies that have world class actors and them Angelica Houston,
Ian McShane, Gabriel By Yeah, on a di armist again.
She's been she's in Oscar nominated actress and she's playing
this so super fun.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
Looks great, very much, but yeah good. I fell in
love with her in Knives Out.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:14):
Also, I love that.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
She was a Bond Yeah, she started out. She came
into the Bond franchise and people were like, who is that? Yeah,
so it's like, yeah, and she should lead her own
action movie and.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
She she did, so yeah, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
Do you both have any other thoughts on the action genre? Again,
we have the pickup and Amazon original. I think Roman
Reigns Superstars gonna pop up. It's it's giving heist, heist movie,
but some comedic elements I believe he had.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
I saw.
Speaker 3 (35:49):
Yeah, Okay, okay, yeah, Davidson, Kekey Palmer, m Davidson.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
I'm a little bit dubious, but Kiki Roman rains popping
up snoop.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
Okay, Keky Palmer and I will unch it.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Okayia Gongoria's into too.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Yes Eddie, Eddie, Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, but yeah Eddie Murphy.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
The first movie I saw in theaters this year was
one of them days with Kiki Pommer.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
So I haven't seen that yet. I'm not on the
I'm on the basic Netflix tier. I know it's good.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
It's so good.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
I was dubious about it until it got Rave.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Reviews review and it does feel like I throw back
nineties like Buddy Comedy. I love that.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
It's behind it. I should never doubt I should I
should know better. This is on me. Okay, you two.
How about our next genre? We got to get in
some laughs this summer. We're gonna talk about comedic releases.
I have four that I want to present to you two,
and take it whichever direction you'd like. I saw this
trailer for the first time a few days ago, Bride Hard.
(36:56):
It drops on June twentieth. I hope that you will
share your pov on it. We have Happy Gilmore Too,
the highly anticipated sequel from Adam Sandler and Friends, which
is hitting Netflix on July twenty fifth. The Naked Gun
an infamous role, replies by beneath this funny poster reprising
(37:20):
the fame role from Steve Martin that's going to be
in theaters August first, and then finally we also have
The Roses, which will be available in theaters on August
twenty ninth. M our guest of honor. Where would you
like to start here? Which one is sticking out to
you most from mom comedy session.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
I didn't know that last reference you made or what
was the first one you said?
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Oh, Brideheart, Yeah, the Key Yeah.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Oh I didn't hadn't seen the trailer. The only reason
I know about the other one is because the trailer
came on before we saw Thunderbolts. I think the Naked
Country came so silly. Oh my god.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
The poster, the throwback poster of him riding the bullet
I was like, what is this? O. J.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Simpson?
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Yeah, because Liam Neeson is, He's done so many of
those action movies. I was like, is this another one?
He's like, no, this is so silly. Okay, I don't know. Well,
what was this other one you mentioned? It was?
Speaker 2 (38:23):
Yeah, So we have Bridehard Happy Gilmore too. Thank you.
We left off, that's gonna do numbers on Netflix. I'm
sure there's also a wrestling connection there.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Mjf Adam Sandler to just be like no on Netflix.
He's like his movies are just like I wanted to
go on vacation with my friends.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
He's calling the shots. We know how this goes.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
But then he'll do something like uncut gems and you're like,
oh he can. Yeah, yeah he's really good. Yeah, so good,
like damn it, act act more, Adam, do more of that.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
I'm pretty out on the Sandler Netflix. I know there's
a certain charm that comes with him, so I've certainly
Brad's dubious. I certainly clicked play numerous times when I
see new Adam Sandler original on on the Flicks but
called the flicks. I think, I don't think flicks, but
it just doesn't do anything flicks and.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
Chill doesn't.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Just like Max is back to HBO.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Yeah, as it should be. Yeah yeah, or they could
think they could just call it HBO and be done right.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Generally, I'm generally out on the Sailor Netflix experience. But yeah,
I don't know where I was going with that other
than to say, brad Or do you feel similarly, or
are you giving Sailor a shot this summer.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
I am going to give Sandlor a shot, of course.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
I am.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Like I grew up with Stubbs. I grew up with
I want to know. I want to know if Ben's
still are still working at the nursing home. I want
to know if, like I want to see these I
can't remember the name Tom something, the guy that plays
Shooter mcavin.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Yeah, he's there, he's been.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
He's been living that gimmick since that movie came out.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
They have a face off in the trailer. That's a
big moment. Yeah, I'm okay, you're in.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
I'm excited about it. For the nostalgia, it's I'm not
I don't have any expectations for this. It's not like
they're going to be bringing up Bob Barker, so like,
I don't, Well, there's a whole bunch of people that
were in the original that aren't around anymore, Like Carl
Weathers died recently, Bob Barker is gone. Like, there's there's
so many people that won't be in this film that
it bums me out. But I don't know how you
(40:33):
how do you capture that that kind of quintessential nineties
spirit in twenty twenty five comedy about golf, which not
a lot of people are going to be able to
connect to. And I know that connected to him in golf,
but that was like Tiger Woods was a new thing
and people were interested in golf for the first time.
But we're like, it's all uppity and stuff. So he
(40:54):
was a great He was a great segue into that.
And now I don't know how that's gonna I think
the nostalgia for a property that people know will bring
people in. I'm certainly gonna watch it. As far as brideheard.
I didn't know this was a thing until you, until
you shared it with me. I will check it out.
(41:16):
I'm sure on streaming at some point, but I'm not
gonna go to a movie theater. The Naked Gun so
Leslie Nielsen had a kind of a more serious acting
career before that. Did you'all ever see the original Poseidon Adventure. No,
he's did that nineteen seventy two. Yeah, it's like it's terrifying.
(41:36):
It's the Titanic esque, we got to escape this sinking
ship thing.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
He's the captain.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
So he's done a bunch of serious, and I think
kind of like in Reno nine one one, this is
a you know, the the the stripper cop. I can't
remember her name. She's like the mom in the Gouldbergs
Thank You You at least amazing. And the reason it
(42:02):
works is because she doesn't play it as a silly role.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
She takes everything serious.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
That's serious, and I think that's what Liam Neeson is
going to do. I think he's going to take everything
super seriously, which is what Leslie Nielsen did through that
whole Like Airplane worked because I am serious and don't
call me Shirley, and he just dead panned it. And
that's the only reason that that role worked. And I
think I think Liam Neeson's perfect for that. I think it.
(42:27):
I think it'll work if the situational stuff works. And
I don't know how much faith I have in that,
but it's just.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
Funny that we had Leslie Nielsen and now Liam Neathan.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
Yes, it's wild. I was thinking the same thing.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
Yes, I remember, I mean, among other things, he obviously
did so many movies, but I just remember Leslie Nielsen
being Dorothy's boyfriend on Golden Girls.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Yes, yes, at the end. Yeah, how many people who
listened to Gee.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
I also watched Golden.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
Girls, hopefully hopefully all of them.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
All of them.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
Yeah, I mean like you should be. It's required that
move that it still holds up and it's still hilarious.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Golden Girls.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
Yes, my gosh, Rose Rose Rose Roseye is my gi Uh.
The one that we left off there at Tyler I
think was The Roses?
Speaker 1 (43:18):
What is that? So?
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Uh it's I'm looking at it right now. And according
to Wikipedia, it is a satirical where was it?
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (43:27):
Satirical black comedy, a dark comedy that is primarily British
and then with a sprinkling of Ryan Gosling in there
and COULDI gotwa was in there? The most recent Doctor Who?
And I just saw an interview with him. Where Gosling
during the I think it was during the filming of
The Roses was wearing a T shirt with got what
(43:49):
on it that said Doctor Who? He had like a
custom shirt made to celebrate him is like Doctor Who.
And I guess Ryan Gosling everybody loves him because he's
a super down to earth and super kind and all that.
But he's been Doctor Who for at least like two years.
So I think this film, this was filmed either two
or three years ago and just hasn't come out yet.
Oh wow, yeah, so it's it's it's been in the
(44:11):
bank for a while, but an incredible cast. Benedict cover Batch,
Olivia Coleman. I could stop there and just be like,
Olivia Coleman's in it, So I'm gonna I will.
Speaker 1 (44:20):
Be to you. I now know what you're talking about
because it's a remake of the eighty one Day cover Batch.
I thought that trailer was on. I think it was
after the Naked Gun trailer. It sounds right because now
I know that you mentioned those names. Now they're fighting
over a house.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
Yes, yeah, and Kate Kate McKinnon's into two and that
I love Kate McKinnon. So yeah, yeah, that's It's a
great cast. This one. I might go check out because
it just because the cast looks so greave. Yeah, I
might have to go check it out.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
That's so funny, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
Okay, next genre, we have drama. I know all three
of us appreciate a good dramatic flick. Two selections and
and perhaps we'll even get into more. We have one
that's already out, the Phoenician Scheme. This is starring Wes Anderson. Yeah,
a Wes Anderson film starring Benicio del Toro, Michael Sarah,
(45:13):
Risamed Love Risamed, Tom Hanks, Brian Cranston, and a bunch
of other really.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Kate, Kate Winslet's daughter, Oh.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
No kidding, Yeah, oh your daughter star Joe Jeffrey Wright. Okay,
this this may have to be a must. It's an espionage,
dark comedy said in the fifties. So again, that is
out currently. It came out on June sixth, and then
we also have a release that I am really anticipating
on August twenty second. Spike Lee's newest project is going
(45:43):
to come out highest to lowest, starting Denzel Washington. Obviously
it's no secret, particularly to our YouTube viewers, that I
am a big Spike Lee. Yeah, and Denzel. I mean,
come on now, Denziel.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
I love Denzel.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Denzel's Denzel one name only. So with that in mind,
and certainly there will be other drops, but these are
the two that stood out to me most. Emily, what's
say you as a fan of drama films, what's the
vibe check on on these two releases?
Speaker 1 (46:08):
Are Yeah, your Nick Well, I love Denzel?
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Yeah? Action Crime dramatic kind of thriller here with Highest
to Lowest a little bit.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
Of well Wes Anderson. I don't know, I'm not really
on the boot. I did enjoy his last one, the
one that was a dang what was it called? But
it was set in the South, Yeah, Asteroid City. I
enjoyed that a lot.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
And that's.
Speaker 1 (46:35):
Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie. Yeah, I mean it's good. I
kind of respect him without really like liking him, if
that makes sense. But I don't think i'll check. I mean,
I'll maybe like stream that one, but uh, i'd be
more clean inclined to see like a Denzel movie thinking
(46:58):
up against it. He's so good.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
Yeah, yeah, one of the greatest of our time.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
M hm.
Speaker 3 (47:03):
I'm going to go opposite of that. I'd probably go
see Phoenician Scheme over Highest to Lowest And here's why.
Highest to Lowest comes out August twenty second and is
on Apple TV September fifth, So I'll just wait two
weeks and watch it for free.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
Apple comes back. Yeah, that's that's a good time. I
didn't realize he was dropping one Apple so so quickly.
Speaker 3 (47:20):
It's that's what Apple Apple does when they make their studio.
Think they put it on Apple TV Plus so people will.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
Get the press.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
What an interesting time in the industry.
Speaker 3 (47:28):
Yeah, because that first week is where movies make all
their money.
Speaker 1 (47:31):
Now so and then then everyone stops going.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:35):
But remember when Denzel was like an action star for
a little bit and he was already old and we
talk about.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
The equalizer there does anyone Yeah, got john Wick, we
got the equalizer running this uh equalizer?
Speaker 1 (47:46):
And then but then before that man on Fire he
was really good and oh yeah, there was so and
he was so impressed with her apparently on that he
was like, wow, she.
Speaker 2 (48:01):
Didn't she pop up in the equalizer as well? I
think one of the the more recent ones when they
were in Italy, I think she popped up. Now as
adults to Coda Fanning and.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
I love I think about training Day every once in
a while because of Denzel and that the end of
That's the King Kong speech, how it was improv and
when all of the people standing around were like terry
crews in the background because he was on set visiting.
They were like, can you just go out there here,
go put on this shirt and go stand in the back.
When when people were walked backing up. It's because they
were legitimately scared of Denzel in that moment.
Speaker 2 (48:37):
He's a different beat. Yeah, he's a different The New
York Times interviewed him recently different.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
I still haven't watched his Macbeth and I've been dying
to watch it. I still got to check that out
also Apple, So I'll probably do that sometime this week
when I have some downtime. But yeah, I can't wait
to see it. I love Spike Lee. Like I remember
going going opening weekend to he.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
Was it?
Speaker 3 (49:02):
What was the basketball? Was it basketball?
Speaker 2 (49:05):
He got game?
Speaker 3 (49:06):
He got game?
Speaker 1 (49:06):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
I was like basketball diaries. No, No, that was earlier.
That was Yeah, anyway, he got game with Denzel and
it was really it was really great watching that in
a movie theater and seeing that. So but it was
me and the aforementioned Mike climbing and literally nobody else
(49:27):
behind us because it was Escanaba, Michigan and one of
people coming to watch Spike Lee movies in Escanaba at
the time in the nineties. But I really want to
go see it, but I also like two weeks. I
can wait two weeks.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Yeah, And I would imagine we have some folks out there,
of course, none of our respective audience members, but some
folks who only know Spike Lee as being this, you know,
this huge New York Knicks fan, you know, on the
sideline of basketball games.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
And just with amazing glasses.
Speaker 2 (49:52):
Yeah yeah, and just and just doing the most yeah
kind of yes, yeah, kind of being like a fashionista.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
I think there's the guys in the Little Penny Commerci.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
Insurance or other things. But I think there's I think
there's a significant part of the population.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
And maybe we're confusing with Spike Jones, who also directs
or directed.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
Yeah, there are people that don't know of Spike Lee's history,
his filmography here I say, his brilliance. And so hopefully
linking back up with Denzel, I think, you know, they'll
do a media tour and this will maybe bring in
a new batch of of audience members who will be presenting.
Speaker 1 (50:28):
The last one he did with him, was that Inside Man,
The last one he did.
Speaker 2 (50:32):
With Denzel Yeah, probably, yeah, that that had to be
because there's Malcolm X inside Man after he got Game
of course, thank you, yes, yes, but yeah, we're going
back next Family Talk. We love the kids. We have
(50:53):
four releases that are coming out this summer that I
think are going to be big for family viewing. We
have l coming out on June twentieth. We have Smurfs
featuring Rihanna. I saw that trailer. I have thoughts August
I died, will I will save those Smurf slash the
Rihanna experience on July eighteenth. We'll have The Bad Guys Too,
(51:16):
coming out on August first. And then finally, still the
family category, but a bit different of a presentation, Freakier
Friday will be released on August eighth. Emily Oleo Jones,
what do you think about these four? Any stick out
to you? Well?
Speaker 1 (51:34):
I did see that Surf trailer and I was like what.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was like, Rihanna,
when's the last ten? When was her last album? Like
four years ago?
Speaker 3 (51:47):
There's a lot of time ago.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
Yeah, yeah, because when she had that super Bowl performance
here in Arizona that there wasn't a new album. Attack.
Speaker 1 (51:54):
No, he did her greatest hits. I mean, queen, yes,
but now I like re read what I mean, paycheck.
I'm sure, but.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
She's like, I don't want to do music associated with
the sound I couldn't believe.
Speaker 1 (52:07):
I'm like, we're gonna get new music from Rihanna, and
it's going to be for this Smurf movie.
Speaker 2 (52:13):
Do you think Rihanna fans will go to Smurf just
for the Rihanna Maybe?
Speaker 1 (52:17):
I mean a lot of Rihanna fans probably have kids
at this point, and she's got she's pregnant with her
third child, I think, so. I don't know that had
to do with her choice, where she's like, I don't
have to leave my house to record vocals with Okay, great,
she does not have to he doesn't have to do
anything she wanted to do. But I was like, wow, wow, No,
(52:40):
like Rihanna's newest release will just be for the Smurf movie.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
But wait a time and the other one?
Speaker 1 (52:49):
Uh elio, I don't know. I think it looks cute.
I don't I'm not. I don't have kids, so I
don't know. Maybe Brad would be the one to talk
about the family releases, but.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
Uh yeah, I don't know about what about Freaky r Friday?
Speaker 1 (53:06):
Yes, I mean yeah, I remember when and that's a remake.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
Too, Yes, well, sequel. I think it's because it's Jamie
Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan from Yeah but her the
ones she.
Speaker 1 (53:17):
Did with Jamie Lee, like that was a reason that
was like joy Jodi Foster did a Freaky Friday in
like the seventies. So but Lindsay, I mean, yeah, she's
a I grew up with Lindsay. I was there through
the craziness. You know, she's probably about my sister's age.
I want to sit maybe a little older. But I'm
(53:39):
glad she's doing well. I'm glad she's doing better.
Speaker 2 (53:42):
And that was a time capsule there there was an
error where she was one of the biggest stars in Lindsay. Yeah, yeah,
I remember that.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
Well sure, I mean I don't know. I'm sure it'll
be on streaming. Oh maybe Jesse will probab we want
to watch it. She might take Freya. I'm good. I
have no interest. I kind of like Marble fatigue. If
you are if you are uh like me. There are
(54:14):
a lot of Smurfs movies, like a lot of Smurf
movies in the last decade, like a lot, and I'm
tired of them. Because there was there was the films obviously,
but then there were like Christmas specials and like the
other thing and I just there's a lot of Smurfs
around this house with Neo Patrick Harris and uh oh
uh Hank's area playing Gargamel.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
Did you justin timber Lake pop up in one of these?
Speaker 3 (54:38):
I can't remember.
Speaker 2 (54:39):
He was a big part of one, probably Bamy Poehlar.
Speaker 1 (54:43):
Maybe I just don't. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
It's a blur, its a blur.
Speaker 3 (54:46):
I can't. I can't even remember because I just all
I remember is Hank's area with with the magic wand
and the green stuff and Asriel the cat. At least
they have like old school looking smurfs in this new one.
Frail will probably want to see it. I don't know
if I want to see it. I'm good on waiting
(55:07):
in that one. Same same with until you brought up
this Pixar film. L e oh is it l O
or a leo e o ell e oh, okay, very good.
That's how much I know about this. We haven't even
gone and seeing Lelon Stitch yet. And uh that that
came out a minute ago now it feels like a
long time ago, but it was. It was like two weeks, yeah,
(55:30):
with Labor Labor Day weekend or not Labor Memorial Day, weekend,
but I think before maybe I don't know. Yes, yeah,
that's great. That's when we that's when we went and
saw oh nothing at all, never mind, we didn't see
anything then that was that was wrestling, I believe is
what I went to see was was was a wrestling
event almost. Yeah, that was one hundred percent that weekend.
(55:54):
So yeah, we were, we were we were on what
Dale for that? Uh yeah. I think Fray is probably excited.
She probably has no idea that these are even things.
So I'm good. I'm good not going. I still haven't
seen whatever that robot movie was from last year, the
last Robot, Lost Robot, Yeah, Wild Robot, Wild Robot. So
(56:20):
I don't know if if they dropped the Blue movie
is coming out, I would be seated opening night.
Speaker 2 (56:27):
Bluey Louise, so cute.
Speaker 3 (56:30):
Have you watched Have you watched Blue?
Speaker 1 (56:32):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (56:33):
I've seen clips as well.
Speaker 1 (56:34):
I do have nephews.
Speaker 3 (56:36):
No, no, no, no, Tyler, no clips full episode no, No,
I'm not. I'm not scat of here with your clips.
Fifteen minute episodes. It's kind of the perfect time. Yeah,
if you watch an episode, there's two of them, really yeah,
and they kind of nail life like they just nail it.
It's it's unbelievable yep. And if you're a parent, oh
(56:58):
just ugly crime. Half the time are laughing hysterically and going,
I know this pain. The ice cream episode is so
simple and it's it's perfect. So they dropped bluey.
Speaker 1 (57:10):
Adb there but and you get and you get off
the accents too.
Speaker 2 (57:14):
Yes, there is also no yes, got to factor that in. Yeah, okay,
final category. Freya probably definitively won't be seeing these, but
maybe maybe some of us will, maybe some of you
out there will. Between eight years of it the horror genre,
five releases coming out soon, we have twenty eight years later,
Oh post apocalyptic kick that will hit theaters on June twentieth.
(57:37):
The following week, Megan two point yes, great Emily reacts.
Let's picture we clip that production team That will come
out on June twenty seven. They can't wait for your
thoughts there, Emily. Next on July eighteenth, we'll have I
Know what you did last summer?
Speaker 1 (57:54):
No way are you kidding?
Speaker 2 (57:56):
Another great reaction then we'll have together on July thirtieth.
This is probably the one I'm most fascinated. I don't
with it's uh we will get to it bodily horror,
and then finally weapons will drop on August eighth. But
let's rewind. Let's start with twenty eight years later and
then Megan two point zero. Emily, you seem most excited
(58:19):
about the latter. Megan is kind of in some ways
you could argue its own.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
Us an icon. She's well, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
She just you will see this film.
Speaker 1 (58:30):
Yeah, she's like, she's like a gay icon. Megan. She's
so awesome. That was so fun to see in theaters
last year. With that last year or was it the
year before that.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
I think maybe in the year before, she's iconic. I
love massive.
Speaker 1 (58:44):
Success, you get behind Megan. Yeah, but now she's like
even more like yaesified. Now she's like a teenage Megan.
Speaker 2 (58:52):
They really leaned into it. Oh, it's so eager to
see how it doesn't in theaters.
Speaker 1 (58:56):
And then he and then like she came on before
Valerie last night to be like, shut off your phones.
It was very funny.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
Oh wow, great reaction from the audience.
Speaker 1 (59:06):
Oh yeah, it was just funny. She's she's great. And
then twenty eight years later, I know that's a Is
it the sequel or was there more than one sequel or.
Speaker 3 (59:17):
Is this there's more? There was a sequel and I
think a prequel. No, there was a second. There was
a sequel. I think it was twenty eight months later
or something, okay, because I can't remember. Twenty weeks later,
twenty eight weeks oh.
Speaker 1 (59:30):
Okay, because twenty eight days that was? Was that Alex
Garland's first big thing that he did.
Speaker 3 (59:36):
It might have been it was Killy Murphy's kind of
breakout role.
Speaker 1 (59:39):
Okay, But I don't like being scared, Like I get
scared really easily. Like Megan's just silly and fun, but
I don't like and like the zombie thing. I just
I don't know. Jody Comer is amazing, she's she's in
this movie. I don't know if anyone any relationeners watched
(01:00:01):
Killing Eve, but she wasn't Killing Eve. She's great, But
I just get scared. I don't know, I might not.
It might not be your horror girl, but uh, I'm
sure it'll be good because it's Alex Garland. He did
this was scary and it was really good. But I
just made an Annihilation reference before we started recording, and
that is an Alex Garland horror with that is horror
(01:00:24):
for sure. Natalie Portman, that's scary.
Speaker 2 (01:00:27):
So this one is also really scary from the trailer.
I mean, you both know me. I'm a horror guy.
But it depends on the on the specific title we're referred.
Speaker 1 (01:00:37):
Sometimes it's too scared.
Speaker 3 (01:00:39):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Post apocalyptic and granted the pandemic COVID was was many
years ago at this point, and you know, fortunately the
three of us are still here having this conversation, but
it just kind of hits home of I remember when
not too long ago, we were fighting for toilet paper
at Fry's grocery store, and obviously this takes it, you know,
several notches further. But I think in general, the post
(01:01:00):
apocalypse at yeah, it's just not my jam. The trailer
does look super scary, so very effective there, but I
will probably skip this one. There's a better chance of
me seeing Megan two point zero then.
Speaker 1 (01:01:13):
Oh yeah, that's just fun.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
Yeah, it's probably more action. It's its own genre, real.
Speaker 1 (01:01:17):
It's comedy. Yeah, that's just like, yeah, that's so fun.
Speaker 3 (01:01:21):
I guess I loved twenty eight Days Later and I
liked how it I liked how it ended. I didn't
think they needed a sequel, Like the the infected were
dying off from hunger, and that's kind of how it ended.
It was like, oh cool, a hopeful spot like this happened,
there was an outbreak. They contained it the end. The end.
I didn't see twenty eight weeks later. I was just
(01:01:43):
reading a synopsis because I was like, how are we
have twenty eight years later? Stupidity happens in twenty eight
weeks later, and then the mainland. The movie ends with
the mainland being infected in France, So twenty eight years
is probably like the whole the whole world is f't now,
but before it was contained over in the UK. So
I really liked it because there's a shot of like
(01:02:04):
a crow eating like a piece of flesh and eyeball
or something, and blood drips down and like gross. One
of the characters looks up and it hits him in
the eye and that's how he becomes infected while they're
out the road.
Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Yea, and.
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
Twenty eight days twenty eight days later. But when I
saw twenty eight years later, I was like, why not
just make a walking dead? Yeah movie, Like why why not?
Just it's it was a little too similar to that
for me, somewhere between the crap that was World war Z.
They ruined that inspire book so much.
Speaker 1 (01:02:38):
And and Walking Dead, well, we have like The Last
of Us that's very.
Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
Popful, yes, and that's and that's so different, such a
different spin on it. And like all they're doing is
directly maybe a little bit of changes in the second season,
I guess, but directly adapting a video game story that's
already been done. So they're just speaking a naughty Dog production.
I'm looking at you, Naughty Dog. I need some real Uncharted,
(01:03:05):
not the thing with Tom Holland. I need some real
Uncharted please, thank you. Oh and Charted is incredible and
Charted for real, real good stuff. The rest of them
they're okay, but Uncharted for amazing and they like pulled
from it a little bit, but that's the game that
they did to go, like, hey, actually focusing on these
characters like this really good idea, and that's what gave
(01:03:26):
us the Last of Us. All of those things.
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
Happened because who did follow what's.
Speaker 3 (01:03:32):
That followut as Bethesda? Okay, but but the way they
did the TV show is masterful because they kind of went,
we're gonna take all these little factions and things people
know but ignore everything else and we're just gonna roll
with this. And it worked. It's it's wonderful, but that's
they made it almost like Splatstick the TV show, where
(01:03:55):
I feel like I could tolerate that, kind of like
James Gunn when he did Lither. I can do the
funny horror a lot easier in a post apocalyptic world
than I can the serious theory apocalyptic. It's just so
dark and that's it's gross.
Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
Yeah, and I will with Fallout, like I couldn't even
watch that. My husband wanted to and I was like,
this is too disgusting.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Then no joke.
Speaker 1 (01:04:20):
Yeah, it's so gross, Like I turned it off. When
Walton Goggins, who I love. I love Walton Goggins, but
when he just like I started eating that guy, I
was I was like, no, I'm done. I can't. I
can't watch it. And it is foot or something right,
well he killed his friend and I was like, no,
(01:04:41):
I I liked you and justified. You were awesome and justified.
Watch Walton Conkin's on.
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
That one, the White Lotus. I mean, he's on the map.
He's so good simples like me.
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
He's like a household names, what else, righteous gemstones. He's
just great for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:04:59):
Okay, we'll speaking. Yes, there you go, speaking of eye
speaking of eyeballs while I am here eyeballs and horror
films together. It comes out July thirtieth. I mentioned this
a moment ago. So it's a supernatural body horror film
starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco.
Speaker 1 (01:05:17):
Already I can't.
Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
I'm just like, ok well, I'm going to get this
summary off, Emily. Okay, it's it's this couple who are
in love. I'm telling you. The trailer is really well done.
There's no dialogue, It's just scenes pinned with this kind
of classical music in the background. It's this couple, clearly happy,
moving into a new home together, and then slowly but surely,
(01:05:42):
there's an infection or curse or something and they become
conjoined to each other.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
So the.
Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
Emily's not gonna be happy with this. But I'm just
gonna say this. The poster for this movie, you have
them looking at each other, one eyeball to one eyeball, intertwining.
Thank you becoming one. So, Emily Olero Jones, you have
till July thirtieth, to think about this film and to.
Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
Decide whether or not you need to think about it.
Speaker 2 (01:06:12):
It's about marriage, it's about love and also a couple conjoining,
and it's what.
Speaker 1 (01:06:17):
It sounds like. It's supposed to be quote unquote elevated horror,
Like it's going to be a commentary on what it's
like and like heteronormativity, and it's like being married. But yeah,
because those two are married in real life.
Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
I didn't Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
Still, I think so after doing a movie like that,
I don't know, the brainstorming sessions for this.
Speaker 1 (01:06:39):
One was, oh gosh, yeah, I'm just like I did not.
Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
Realize Frank going Okay, good stuff, good stuff. Okay, Well,
Emily's a no on that one, but it's not I
know what you did last summer also coming out, and
I find it really interesting that Final Destination that is
getting rave reviews. Yeah, it's already out. Apparently it's it's
(01:07:02):
arguably the best one. Great yeah in the series. Yeah,
which I did not expect. But here we are. Okay,
you two. I have three final big picture questions for
for you both, Which films out of this list are
you most excited to see? If you give me three like,
I must see this. I got to get to the theater,
which there are.
Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
Youtubechoosing I already like literally forgot Meghan.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
Well, we know Megan is your number one. Megan is
your number one.
Speaker 3 (01:07:30):
You already saw a ballerina, you already possible.
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
Yeah, what do you rather two besides Meghan? What do
the people need to see the summer?
Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
Boy?
Speaker 1 (01:07:38):
What else do we even? What was the other one?
Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
F one jurassical old.
Speaker 1 (01:07:45):
That sounds fun. F one sounds like, yeah, you should
see that on the big screen. Megan just sounds fun.
And then I'm not a horror person, so don't come
to me for like a horror I'm probably not gonna Yeah,
you should go see that, but uh, I don't know
what was the okayd' tell I.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
Want to see the highest to lowest. You seem pretty
optimistic about Naked Gun with Liam Mason.
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Oh, that did look funny. That looks super funny too.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
I don't know. Yeah, as long as you see Megan,
you are good. With Emily Brad which ones are are
making your list hopefully to see before the school year.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
Starts, outside of Fantastic four in Superman, which are on
my list and obviously mission impossible. I'd like to see Ballerina.
I probably won't make it there. I really want to go, though.
I'll pick a few here. Naked Gun happy Gilmore too?
(01:08:44):
Is he like the ones that are gonna be on video? Sure,
but going to a theater naked gun I'm gonna say
Jurassic World because dinosaurs and I don't care if it's
good or not. Dinosaurs. Yeah, F one F one just
sounds really fun. Yeah, that's that's like a go to
the movie theater to see you.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Yeah, absolutely great.
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
Not not Smurfs.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
No, that looked like a nightmare. I was just like,
oh my god, imagine having to sit through this because
your kid wanted to see it.
Speaker 2 (01:09:13):
Like our our audience was very confused by it. It
was just like, oh, this is a thing that exists.
And to Brad's point, another Smurf film. And Rihanna's a
part of this.
Speaker 1 (01:09:24):
Rihanna's passing a paycheck. Rihanna is doing her thing.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
She she is a business woman. Okay. My second question,
this is a rhetorical one. Will any of these surpassed
Sinners for Tyler? No? No, if you have not seen Sinners,
make sure you see Sinners. It is incredible, and I
hope I'll enjoy films this summer, but Sinners is my
favorite movie going experience so far this year. Finally, Emily
(01:09:51):
the third final question, any recent movie theater anecdotes. Obviously
you are a go to guest when it comes to
all things cinema. Any other ani goes from your recent
film experience. I divulge that I now attend Imax movies
and I'm very disappointed that they don't have their recliner seats,
very very disappointed, very disappointed.
Speaker 1 (01:10:11):
Bad.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Yeah, it's it's unacceptable.
Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
Uh, well, because I did just go yesterday to see
a ballerina. I did get stopped on the way out
by E works and they were doing survey. They're like,
would you like to take a survey for a free
movie ticket? And I was like, hell yeah, I'm not joking.
I think it took like thirty minutes. If I don't,
(01:10:38):
I was like, if I had known, like but then
I felt bad. I was like, I can't just like leave.
That's why this kid is like, now watch this trailer
and tell me, oh man. But it was funny because
I was there. I was there with my husband and
they're like and I was like, sure, you do it,
and they're like, oh, sorry, we've already covered your demographic
(01:11:00):
because my husband's a thirty four year old white man,
and they're like, but you and I was like, oh great,
they're like Asian female and thirties. Yes, let's uh, we
need your input on this trailer for Alien. Whatever was Oh,
it was very funny. But I got my free movie ticket,
so okay.
Speaker 2 (01:11:19):
So it sounds like for a audience, if they get
asked to take a survey, first question before you agree
to it at the time, how long is this? How long?
I only have so much time to give you for this.
Speaker 1 (01:11:29):
I didn't know it was going to take that long already.
I thought it would be like like ten seconds, like
he was just going to ask what did you just see?
How did you whatever?
Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
And then no, you're probably literally you're probably literally mixed uff. Yeah,
they really literally see it for this one.
Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
Oh yeah, So now I know a whole lot about
the Alien and was asked so many questions about my
feelings about the Alien franchise that I don't have feelings
about the Alien franchise, but they did want to know
what a thirty five year old woman Asian female had
to say about Alien or not not Alien.
Speaker 3 (01:12:06):
Predator Oh my god, oh okay, so I know what
you're talking about now.
Speaker 1 (01:12:10):
El Fanning. I was like, yeah, El Fanning, cool, so silly.
And then they were asking what socials do you use
and blah blah blah. They're like Facebook. I'm like, no,
not really, TikTok no, I don't have it. Instagram. I'm like, yes,
i am a thirty five year old woman. I'm on
Instagram several times a day.
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
Predator bad Lands that.
Speaker 1 (01:12:32):
They were asking me about that. They asked me so
many questions about that trailer. I was just like, okay, yeah,
got my free movie take.
Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
And then there's an animated one coming out.
Speaker 2 (01:12:41):
