Speaker 1 (00:02):
And now Camick in Fringemen. Welcome everybody to the Gimmick
Infringement Podcast. I am Brad Winchester with me as always
as my tag team partner Tyler McDowell. Blanket Tyler. It
is the Sunday of Summer Slam Weekend, the to night
Summer Slam Extravaganza, and it is the night before the

(00:25):
biggest return in all of entertainment and learning. I guess Tyler,
you going back. You're back to the classroom tomorrow. How
are you feeling on day one?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Eve? I was not ready for that intro. So, first
of all, Brad Winchester, thank you for thank you for
being my high man. I'm excited, I'm nervous, I am grateful,
I'm feeling I don't know if I would say I'm
ready yet. How ready can you really be for the
first day? Yeah, right right, I'm leaning into my joy,

(00:57):
the all the excitement that comes with the new school
You and I were talking before we clicked record that
there's just there are the good vibes when you come back,
when you prepare for a new school year to launch it,
but then immediately you're already thinking about the pressures, the
lack of time, the trainings you have to get done.
So I am constantly reminding myself things will get done.

(01:21):
Everything is gonna be fine. And how much of a
privilege it is that we get to do this work
and just all of the all of the memories that
are going to be created, you know, starting this week
and beyond for the next one hundred and eighty school days.
So I'm thankful. I can't wait to hear how you're
doing fill us in the Southern Arizona legend himself. You're returning.

(01:44):
How are you feeling heading into a new school.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Year, you know, heading into the school year. I feel
pretty good right now. I feel pretty dreadful. This migraine
is beating me up pretty good. My first question this morning,
when I saw Jess, I was up before her. She
came out and I looked at her and I was like,
when you go outside, I need to know if there
are clouds in the air, I need to know and
no clear and sunny. And I think that's the problem.

(02:07):
I think I think the weather is shifting a little bit.
I know we're supposed to have storms coming up in
the next couple of days, finally getting rain down here.
We have had hardly any rain. We had like one
two three day soaker and then just nothing.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Dang, I didn't advisory in the valley.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yes, us as well. We've been on constant heat advisories,
but not rain advisories. We had a flash flood watch
a couple of nights ago. But of course Morana lives
in this like this rain vacuum where it just the
the storms tend to follow the mountains at ignore everything
in between, so it always misses where we are because
we're kind of out I don't know if you want

(02:46):
to call it a valley. It's more of a plane
than anything else, but it is in between the mountain
ranges and it just sort of like parts it where.
I know the metro area has been getting slammed with storms,
but we just haven't been seen it. And I'm looking
forward to the day at act actually rains out here again,
because the humidity is nuts like it is out of
bounds hot it is. I believe one thirteen is the

(03:08):
high today with some pretty good sized humidity. I would
like the rain. I would also like it to cool
down a little bit, because you know, Tyler working in
a in a school. How do I frame this in
the kind way working in a school that was built
during like the Eisenhower administration. There there are some challenges

(03:34):
with the air conditioning units, and I worry about that
day one, like that we're probably not going to have
an internet outage. I would hope. We just got brand
new switches and we're on one gig service now all
throughout the campus, so a lot of increased bandwidth there,
which is exciting. I worry about, like just the the

(03:56):
the insane heat and having to run the whole campus
hard throughout the day and for the first day back
and doors are opening, so it's all going to be
on a little bit more. Is it gonna hold it?
Are the chillers going to cooperate? You know? But I
actually look forward to these things. I like the unpredictability
of the beginning of the year. I find it very funny.

(04:18):
Usually I find it very funny when things just stop working.
I just either it's hilarious. Then I like the challenge
of having to pivot. I'm not saying I want it
day one, but I like the days where it's like,
all right, the internet went out, what do we do.
Let's problem solve, Let's figure it out. Chromebooks down. This
is what we're doing. That pivot is one of my

(04:39):
favorite things about teaching is having to, like on the fly,
make a change and still make it work and still
make sure something gets accomplished. I really enjoy that problem
solving and the challenge. I don't enjoy being hot during
all of it, and so I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Both are really such a universally experience for teachers in Arizona.
The one that being hot and then working on older campuses.
Miranda is what seventy seventy six, seventy six Sonny School,
I think seventy five, but yeah, seventy five, Okay, okay,
it's still a minute ago. Sunny Slope was creating nineteen
fifty three, so newly renovated classrooms. But yeah, a lot

(05:20):
of those same challenges, especially with Miranda being what close
to twenty five hundred students, Sunny Slope in the last
ten years or so, doubling their size from about twelve
hundred to twenty four hundred kids, but campus not necessarily
expanding with that. So yeah, right, like you said it,
shout out to all of our our maintenance crew and
our administrators. For overseeing these facilities. Yes, and it shout

(05:41):
out to us and everyone else at the school that
serves that. Yeah. Absolutely, that serves these amazing kids because
they keep coming. And what a good sign it is
that Miranda's growing as a town, that families want to
move here and be started here. And then you know
in the valley with Slope, it's the largest school in
the district by far. And I didn't tell you this, Brad,
but we had a lot of staff activities this past

(06:06):
week and.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
One of oh, I know, you got, you got, you got,
you got wrangled.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
There was not there. There was a lot happening. I
will share. I will share my best highlight, which was
that at Glendale Union High School District here in Azy,
they have much like MHS, they have an annual back
to school celebration where every teacher in the district converges
onto one school to hear from the superintendent to kind

(06:32):
of focus on the mission and vision for the school year, this,
that and the other. To you. I know, I know,
it's a home game for you. Everyone comes to Morana
High School shout out. And then for us, we had
to travel to Thunderbird High School, which is not not
too far from slop. It's maybe about ten minutes tops. Anyway, Brad,
as part of this welcome back, it's an annual tradition

(06:52):
to have what's called a minute to Win It game,
where one person from every school has to go to
the stage, you know, at the front of the gym,
and you compete in the game against your one colleague
from every other school. Do you want to guess who
was nominated from Sunny Slope High School?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Hmmm, I only really know one person there, that's true. Actually,
I'm gonna guess. I'm gonna guess Tyler.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yes, yes, I was asked as a newbie at that
school to partake in this minute to Win a challenge,
So I agree to these terms.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
But I know it's hard to say no when you're
new man exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, that was mostly that was It probably was anything
to do with my my clear athletic prowess and more
about what he's probably not gonna say no Anyway, I
was thinking the night before, what in the world are
they gonna have us do? Is it gonna be? You
have to stack sugar cubes on top of each other,
you have to balance an oreole on your forehead. I
have a large one of those, so that you know

(07:50):
that that could be actually really work quite nicely. Yeah, yeah,
and I do like oreos. But it ended up being
apparently this is the thing on TikTok. We had about
eight to nine teachers again, one from every school had
to step inside this very small box that was outlined
by blue painters tape on the gym. On the gym floor,
we were single file city and everyone was watching us

(08:12):
march in place for one minute. Again, Brad, this is
the thing on TikTok. I learned after the fact. The
goal was to march in place, but stay in your box.
What I am not mentioning to you is that we
were blindfolded as a part of this. So we're blindfolded,
the music starts playing one minute later, take our blindfolds
off and let's see who won. It ended up being

(08:34):
a five way tie, so about three or four people
were eliminated. Five of us me included stayed and then
on the fly, it was decided to have a rock
paper scissors contest. So I looked to my left. Nice lady,
I beat her in rock paper scissors, so I advanced.
I looked to my right, and I want to say,

(08:56):
there were three of us left at that point, and
two colleagues decided, Okay, we're gonna compete and then I
get the winner. So I essentially had a buy into
the finals, Brad Rochester, which I was fortunate to have
that opportunity. So this man and this woman compete. The
guy beats her. Never seen this dude before. I don't
even know what school he was from. He was wearing

(09:17):
a pink polo. I think he had like dirty blonde hair.
He was maybe about six foot one, six foot two.
And when I tell you, Brad, I don't know how
many games of rock paper scissors you played recently. A bit.
This man was looking into my soul when we faced
off in front of hundreds of Glendale Union District teachers.
He wanted this win, and I said, okay, let's make

(09:38):
it happen. It's worth noting that the game prior, because
I got to watch him, he used rock to defeat
the third place lady. Now, Brad, what I've discovered during
this event is that people usually switch their object when
playing rock paper scissors. So I saw him win with rock,
and then I said to myself, I did the calculus
as he was staring into my soul, I said, I

(10:00):
bet this dude is not going to choose rock again,
So I'm gonna choose that one and hope he chooses scissors.
Do you want to know what happened next? Bread?

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Hell? Yes, I do. Well, I'm on pins and needles.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
We we very good. That's what I was hoping for.
So they count us down. We do the rock, paper scissors. Shoot,
he chooses scissors, I choose rock.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Let's go thunderous applause.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Huge pop road Warrior pop high School gets the victory.
I okay, So do you want to know what my
celebration was? I didn't even plan this. I was just
so full of adrenaline that I was almost gonna do
something wrestling related, almost, But I tried to find a
balance between Okay, I don't want to go full heel celebration,

(10:45):
but I also want to let folks know that this
was light work for me. So I just simply hit
the brush off the shoulder and get in front of
a Rocks two hundred plus crowd, maybe three hundred. I'm
probably under selling it because has like ninety five teachers. Anyway,
hundreds of folks are there. I hit them with that,
and then I returned to my seat. Sunny Slope was
on the on the ground floor, and I just returned

(11:05):
to high fives and just praise and great job, dude.
And they also gave me a goodie bag, which I
was not expecting. The governing board president hit me with
a goodie bag, a nice hug, and I discovered there
was an Amazon Echo dot inside that goodie bag. So
we prize.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Let's go. That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
You know how this goes. Sometimes they'll give you bubbles,
depot gift cards, animal crackers off as a depot. But
I was really encouraged by getting an Echo Dot, so
my ego was boosted. I walked away with the prize
and I eventually got a shout out later in the
week from our principal during our whole staff meeting. He said,
way to bring the belt home. I've already developed their
reputation as the wrestling guy on campus. Yes, we've already

(11:45):
accumulated a lot of wins, Brad. We're just going to
continue to hopefully ride that into this first week of school.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
That's great.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
So even if it ends up being a hotter wins too,
we still yeah literal wins. Yeah, and when when our
principal announced me at the staff meeting, I en't know
if I was supposed to do this, if it was
a cue for me, But I stood up when he
announced my name, and I just did the I just
did the Brian Danielson arms extended. You know, Plea didn't
start pumping out. No, No, I didn't. Maybe that that

(12:12):
would have been a move. I just extended my arms
and people clapped for me, and then we moved on.
But there have been many wins already. Bright, I'm feeling
very encouraged for this school year. And also after a
twenty year hiatus, I still got some rock paper scissors game.
Who would have Who would have thought I'm undefeated in
twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Yeah, that's that's incredible. I'm so happy for you. You did
not tell me about that.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
I didn't tell you, glad, I said the pictures from
the staff assembly where there was jump on a mattress
and whicheverything does to half court, the.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
Quick get sort of the practice run for the.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
And our team lost every game. So so again, life
is about balance is the lesson here for for this
week's GI.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
So So this week, I did not tell you this
we we had our staff pick right with Friday. Everybody
show up, do your do your staff pick, and you
know it's it's the kind of the classic end of
the picture thing. The white people come out, do a
silly one, do a silly one. So we always do
a silly one. And this year I sat next to

(13:13):
the voice of GI mister elf Bergerson, who caught me
while I was in line waiting for my yearbook pick.
At some point I will have a pick of of
me of mister Bergson hitting the young bucks pose at
the top of the staff picture. Cannot wait, just yeah,
I cannot wait. I cannot wait. I wanted to stand up.

(13:35):
He's like, you want to stand up? We could sit
down and do it. I was like, all right, I
guess we'll sit down. I thought it'd be funnier to
cover everybody up behind us. But yeah, we we we
sat down. But also I realized I would have had
to stand on a bench to get to his height.
So yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Killing killing the business Braddon All yes.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Yes, I said I afterward, I was like, you know,
founding Fathers would have been even better. We showed up
with like the regalians flags and stuff. Would have been amazing.
It would have been incredible, but a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
As they say, there's always next year.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Yeah, it was. It was a blast. It was, It was.
It was one of my favorite parts of the I
guess off the week leading up to going into the
weekend and then into having kids.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Outside of the guy taking the pictures, this dude likes
to stand on top of his like his rigid hardware
box crates like five six high. He'll just get up
on top of him and stand there to take the picture.
And every year people are encouraging him to do it.
And every year I'm like, if he falls, we're gonna
watch a man die, We're gonna watch a man die,

(14:38):
or at least chatter an arm or a leg or something.
While he was getting up there, he was like, oh man,
my leg. I was just like, this is what are
we doing here? Why? Why isn't somebody stopping this person?
Like this is crazy game. He got up there, he
took the picture and people were like, yeah, he did it. Yeah,
and it's just like this wasn't worth It just wasn't worth.

(14:58):
I hear they make step ladders. It's crazy. Like just anyway,
that part scared the crap out of me. Kind of
kind of appropriate that he had a camera and it
felt like a cinematic event. And speaking of Tyler, I
got to go see something cinematic this past week. I
got to go see Fantastic Four immediately after we recorded

(15:22):
last week. So play the music and now it's time
for Gi.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
After move.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
It's right, we got Gi at the movies, Tyler. I
saw Fantastic four and it lived up to that Moniker.
It was fantastic this film. The art direction was incredible.
It made me think, Okay, Marvel, Marvel's getting back to
where it was really good. Marvel's coming back to where
it felt like this fresh new thing. We've never seen

(15:57):
this kind of true to the comics, unseen thing, because
we've seen reboots of Fantastic Four already. We saw the
original one where it was it was Chris Evans as
Johnny Storm playing playing the Human Torch in what like
early two thousands, and then we had the sequel, The

(16:19):
Rise of the Silver Surfer, where Galactus showed up but
it was it wasn't Galactus, it was garbage. Uh. And
then we had the the reboot and Michael B. Jordan
played Johnny Storm in that film that you know what,
Like I thought the casting for that movie was pretty good,
it was just bad. It was they tried to go

(16:41):
the horror route of the Fantastic Four, and like, oh yeah,
this is a horrifying thing that happened to these people.
Actually they're gonna use it to their advantage, but it's
like a horrifying thing. This film kind of goes, Nah,
they've been around a while, and we're just gonna start
with this like Gilbert and Sullivan looking Late Night Show

(17:01):
where the host comes out very beginning of the movie.
You all know their story. They went up to space
and got these powers, and now they've been saving us
from all this stuff, ladies and gentlemen, the Fantastic Four,
and then it just starts They've already been the Fantastic
Four for years. They've been doing the superhero thing for years.
They're already super established. I love that we didn't have
to watch an origin story and it just kind of goes.

(17:23):
And there were parts of this where I was just
sitting there going like I don't know what's gonna happen.
I don't know what's gonna happen. I don't know what
it's gonna happen, because it's very clearly established that this
is not the same universe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe
takes place in totally different timeline. Well maybe not timeline,
but it's sort of like a futuristic nineteen sixties and

(17:46):
it's beautiful. The story is great. There is a very
intense emotional element to it that I was surprised by.
Is it a little formulaic, yeah? Is it a superhero movie? Yeah?
Is it a ton of fun and worthwhile to go
check it out? Especially in Imax? Yes, the Imax. It
was filmed for Imax. There's some cool stuff whenever, whenever

(18:09):
Galactus is on screen. The I don't, Tyler, I don't
know if you were present for The Dark Knight. Did
you go see The Dark Knight in theaters?

Speaker 2 (18:19):
You have to forgive me, I did not, Okay.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
So I vividly remember it in that movie because there
were some scenes shot in Imax, kind of when the
Imax cameras were first really rolling out, But the whole
movie wasn't shot in Imax. This was and there's there's
a part in the movie where the aspect ratio changes
for Imax because the scene changes so like you're watching
The Dark Knight and all of a sudden, the screen

(18:43):
just gets bigger. And there's parts in this film that
that happens, and it's whenever Galactus is on screen, the
screen sort of enlarges. Because this thing is.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
Like that for Sinners. It blew my mind.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
It's so cool. I loved that so well.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
I'm never I'm never going back to that's what don exactly.
And we caught it in three D. It was It
was great because it wasn't like you know, old movies.
Three D was there for three D sake and not
to enhance the experience. This absolutely enhanced the experience. It's
totally worth it. It's a great film, it's a great story.
You don't need to see other Marvel stuff to go

(19:17):
and watch this. This isn't like the you know, part
twenty of a saga. It's it's certainly not gonna hurt.
After the announcement that Robert Downey Junior was going to
come back.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
And play a different character entirely from Iron Man, everybody's like, well,
how is this gonna happen? Because he's playing Doctor Doom.
Doctor Doom is the Fantastic Four villain and he's not
present in the movie in ways you would expect. In fact,
he's notably absent at a summit where there's all these

(19:51):
you know, different countries there and they pan past Latveria
and it's an empty seat. So I thought that was
really cool. It's like a nod to oh yeah, that
would be after Doom's chair, but he's not even there.
I thought that stuff was really cool. So there's all
these little shouts. You don't really need to know any
of that to enjoy it. Totally worth it to go
check it out, Tyler. I think you would love this movie.

(20:12):
I thought it was great. Go check it out. Catch
it while it's in theaters. I really I haven't wanted
to go back and watch a movie in a long time,
and this is when I would absolutely go back and.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Catch Can we take a moment to rewind and discuss
the preview?

Speaker 1 (20:29):
Oh good lord, why are we showing weapons?

Speaker 2 (20:32):
Weapons? If you are a.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
PG thirteen Marvel movie, my gosh.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
If you are catching us right now, which of course
you why that's why you're you're hearing me say these
words after this episode, or if you're willing to pause
on audio.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Just pause it now on you YouTube.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
If you are not familiar with this new movie Weapons,
check out the trailer. It is a horror movie. Spoiler alert,
big time Brad what was and and ironically it's it's
one of the main characters as a teacher who's gone
missing and is maybe killing people.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
Now anyway, yep, we don't know.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Yeah, what was Fray's reaction real time? Because this totally
caught you off guard. You know, I get scared of
these movies. I can't imagine having a hearty who I'm
supposed to be strong for.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Part of me was okay, I get it. It's a
PG thirteen movie. Pray is not thirteen. I've never gone
to a PG thirteen movie, like a Marvel movie or
a Star Wars or something Disney related, Superman, any of
those things. Pray has gone to those things. It's fine,

(21:40):
it's it's when it's you know, I like, I wouldn't
take her to Jurassic Park because of the horror elements
and like just have nightmares for a month. It's a
superhero movie. It's probably okay, probably, but if you saw Thunderbolts,
you know that they're the void was a lot. It's

(22:01):
totally unexpected to get a preview for an R rated
horror film which has jump scares in the trailer, just
in your face when you're going there to see cartoonish
Fantastic four movie about kids about children age full. I
believe they said the word second or third grade in it,
and I was just like.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
A full, a full sort of penny Wise. It aesthetic. Granted,
it's from the same people who created Barbaria, a movie
that I quite enjoyed. It was great, very off the wall,
but I quite enjoyed it, so I'm sure the movie
itself weapons will probably be okay to very good.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
I want to watch it. It looks great, but it
also looks like I'm not taking Freya no no like
now that.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Looks I looked at when you tested me this, And
along with being incredibly scared, I texted you this is
not helping recruit new teachers. This is not good. That
you can disappear and then come back reincarnated as some
sort of demon. Oh that was Terry Man who took
Harold class with you in the underground is not helping

(23:04):
the business. What are we doing here? And I also
kind of want to see it, but I'm also very scared.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
All of those things man, all of them. So yeah,
thank you. I totally forgot about that. That was awful.
I texted you right before the movie started. I was
in the theater going like, what did I just see?
Because I saw that. I saw the trailer the preview,
and I started watching it and it was late and
I was by myself, and I was like, good, we're
gonna skip this. And then I went to see it

(23:29):
the next couple of days and I'm sitting there and
my my eight year old is watching this with her
eyes wide open, unblinking the entire time, just and Jess.
Jess looked at her and was like, are you you okay?
She's like, yeah, I'm fine, and wouldn't look away. I'm
not scared, Like just just that.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
I do the look down get make like I know
what John's scared about to happen. I'm ready for it.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
I'm trying to look cool here. I'm just gonna kidd
I look. I just looked to my left or right.
I stare at the person watching and I'll just watch them.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
And I guess an inherent charm with previews is that
when you go into a movie, it's not as if
there's a list of the previews you're about to see.
There's that surprise element, which is why we get excited
about previews. Oh there's that movie. I heard about it. Oh,
I just discovered this new upcoming release. But this is
the worst case scenario a previews when you're going for
a superhero family oriented type film, like you say, granted PG. Thirteen,

(24:24):
and you end up walking away with the preview.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
For weapons with trauma, Like with viewer Trauma. It's kind
of like having the The Alien TV show being advertised
pretty heavily at these things too, and frays like what's that?
And I was like, you know that little Funko pop
keychain that I gave you with the little alien, the
cute little alien guy out the thing coming out of

(24:48):
its mouth. They're not cute. The Funko one is cute.
They're not cute. You will not like this. Please look away,
And I will be tuning in when it comes out
on Hulu, but it's gonna be on my phone, probably
in the bedroom, much like it was with Murder Bot.
Great show Fast Watch on Apple TV. Can't say enough

(25:09):
about that. There're twenty five twenty six minutes good.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
There's so much good content for our true crime fans
out there. There's also a new release, relatively new release
that came out last month on Hulu. It's about this
dentist who killed his wife. Oh yeah, yeah, that's the
Safari Safari Jones Safari something Yeah, three three part documentary.
That's only the formula. Now. It seems like Brad Is.
Each episode's about forty to forty five minutes, released it
in three or four parts, and they're wildly successful across Hulu, Netflix,

(25:36):
HBO Max. True crime as a genre is really having
a moment. I totally gave away and spoiler by the way,
forgive me if you've not seen it, if you've not
seen this Hulu special. But it's it's very good. And yeah,
I call it that this week. And so there's there's
just so much content out right now. Yes, it's a
it's it's it's something, and.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
I think there's there's a formula now, especially with with
fiction that like Murder Bought Sci Fi Jones. It's great,
but it's I don't know that there'll be a second season.
They're certainly opened a door there where you could have
another season, but I also felt like I'm kind of
good if they don't I think having a really high

(26:17):
quality TV show just end because you told the story
you wanted to tell, and not just continue it for
financial purposes. So the I reviewed a couple of weeks
ago or a week ago K Pop Demon Hunters. There
are two sequels in the works for this and a
live action version of it, and all I could think was, please,
don't like where are you going to go from here?

(26:40):
That's going to be compelling? That won't just like ruin
what you did because I really liked what they did
and it sort of closed the story. You had character
growth and change. What are you possibly going to do
next that's going to make me want to watch? That
isn't just going to be like a TV show that overstays.
It's welcome because nobody nobody remembers the sequel.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
To Beauty and the Beast, Right.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
Tyler, what's your memory of Pocahontas two?

Speaker 2 (27:08):
So they're not not as vivid as pocon is?

Speaker 1 (27:11):
Yeah, or mulan To or there's king to take even
Home Alone Home Alone. Home Alone as an original is
amazing And the only reason you watch Home Alone two
is because you just watched Home Alone one and you
want more.

Speaker 2 (27:26):
And that's it probably a better example.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Great great, Like, sometimes it's okay to have the one
off and and and leave it there because people are
begging for sequels to different movies. I think people were
talking about having a sequel to Sinners, and Coogler was like,
why no, I'm good, Like, let's leave it there. Sometimes
that art just needs to stand still. We're not getting

(27:49):
Oppenheimer two, Like, so why why would we want to
do anything like that? So I just sometimes you got
to leave it alone if there's a breadth of st
I think superhero movies are like an exception because there's
so many stories that have been told over time for
so long in the comic book medium, that there's this
wealth of storytelling you can draw from with all these

(28:10):
different characters that have been created. I mean, we're talking
nearly one hundred years of storytelling for Superman ninety years
almost so nineteen thirties and on is. Yeah, I feel
like you could probably find something deep in the well
there versus you know, a brand new original IP. You

(28:31):
don't have to always take it and make a sequel
out of it. Sometimes it's not not worth it. This
is a bit of an aside here, but I watched
the video today about like Halo since three four to
three Industries was founded when the original Bungee guys left
to destiny the video game series. So everything after Halo

(28:53):
three or Halo Reach has been a different studio and
they just haven't been good. I mean they haven't bad
either by any stretch, but they haven't been good. And
we're not getting this new stuff. It's just people continuing
on this ip for the sake of money. And when
it comes to art, I don't ever want to see
stuff like that. And I think as we transition into

(29:15):
ww talk and SummerSlam, we don't want to see things
get rehashed all the time. But we love a good
wrestling nod. We love a callback, we love a throwback,
we love an homage, we love those things. I think
that stuff is awesome, and I know we got a

(29:35):
bit of that. I thought we were going full Stone cold,
full Brett Hart like the cmpunk Gunther match with the
Crimson Mask, and we got a different ending, Tyler. So
you know it's time we should get into it. But
I know before we get into it, you have something
for us.

Speaker 2 (29:52):
We do hit the music.

Speaker 1 (29:55):
Stuff.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
Yeah, the two most important words you're at gimmicking fre Brad.
You know, before we go full into WWE Talk, we
gotta discuss Stephanie Baker La Primira now, Although well, let
me rewind Stephanie Baker team with Rheo Ripley, Eo Sky
and Nikki Bella in an eight woman tag versus Naomi,
Chelsea Green and the Secret Hervist. On last week's edition

(30:19):
of Monday Night Raw, Steph got the pin. We'd love
to see it now, although she did not wrestle on
either night of SummerSlam, I was actually quite surprised.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
By that, shocking.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
The future is bright. As we discussed last week, La
Primira will challenge the Raw Women's champ at Clash in Paris,
which is just around the corner on the thirty first
of this month. I'm still thinking the champ will be Naomi,
but we shall see. We're obviously recording this episode before
night two of SummerSlam, but the seeds have already been planted.

(30:49):
That Naomi versus Steph is the match we're gonna get,
and I think it will rule. Now on to WWE Talk.
Like you said, it's a huge weekend for wrestling fans.
The inaugural two nights SummerSlam emanating from MetLife Stadium in
New Jersey, my mom's home state. I want to give
a shout to Mike's.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
I thought of her when they were talking about it. Actually,
yes I did, Thank you, sir. I want to text
to you. And then I just you know, I was
doing doing bullying training.

Speaker 2 (31:16):
So yeah, we get it. A proud a proud daughter
of New Jersey. Love that woman. Okay, So SummerSlam talk first,
big shout out to Mike's Steph. We were in touch
yesterday and he sent me some of his thoughts on
the first night, and I quote Tiffany versus Jade, Mike said,
I'm not shocked, but it's not a good sign for Jade.

(31:37):
I was actually quite surprised that she lost. Regarding Gunthera
versus Punk, Mike and All Caps wrote, they did their thing.
He was very high all that main event, and then
of course, arguably the moment of the night, the Seth
Rollins cash in on It was very well done on
CM Punk Seth Rolins New Champ. Mike said, La Knight

(31:58):
gets the first shot, gunned their heads to SmackDown, and overall,
SummerSlam Night one greater than both nights of WrestleMania. So
Mike Steph was quite high on again at least the
first night of SummerSlam we're recording here on He's a
Big jelly Yeah, A noted CM punk fan Mike Steph

(32:19):
to say the least. Also check out Mike step The
Salty Thoughts of Mike Steph podcast. I was blessed to
go on his show, specifically to discuss the year of
seeing punk and storylines outside of the ring. All that
is the best in the world. Again, check out The
Salty Thoughts of Mike Steph podcast. Multi time guest, good
friend of the show. Thank you again Mike for having

(32:41):
me on there. Brad back to you the best co
host west of the Mississippi. Here's my question for you,
Which match or moment left the biggest positive impression on
you at SummerSlam?

Speaker 1 (32:56):
Who That's tough? That's really tough? Well, there were a
few things where it was like what stats that surprised me?
The commentary kept hitting number one. That commentary did a
great job of really gassing up Roxanne Perez and talking
about how shocked we are at how good she is

(33:17):
and how all these things We're not shocked, but really
like hyping her up. I didn't know Rockuhelle was the
winningnest tag team women's. I don't know if it's women
and men, but like the winningest tag team title holder
in history. That's that's wild, Charlotte and Alexa winning and

(33:39):
having I don't know if I want to say I
feel really good about the tag team division, the women's
tag team division after this, because I didn't feel good
about it going in, and it made me really hopeful.
I just feel like they'll do nothing to build to
another event, and then we'll have another event and none
of the tag teams feel super purposeful around there because

(34:02):
it feels like the storytelling is all within the tag team.
And that's fine. I just like a tag team, you know.
I like FTR like I just like those individuals that
are a team sometimes doing individual things rather than individuals
being a team that will ultimately lead to them feuding
and having a breakup and having a fight because of that.
I just I don't know. I feel like that's lazy,

(34:24):
but I also I also get it. I'm gonna go
with what I thought was my pick that I said
I was the most excited for, and it was gou
thro CM punk. I was so excited for that match
because I look on paper, that's the one that looked
like the best wrestling match on the card, and I
don't know that I have a close second, And I

(34:47):
don't think as far as an in ring storytelling match,
we're getting anything better than that this weekend. It was great.
I thought Roman taking the bullet for Ja and having
them say that on comment I didn't. I didn't really like.
I don't like when they have to tell us that stuff.
I'd rather us figure it out for ourselves or maybe

(35:10):
talk about it later on down the road. I just
like let it feels like they're trying to dictate how
we're supposed to feel about it, and maybe that is
their job. I don't know, but I really like having
that being open for interpretation. But if you've been watching
for a long time, you understand that character growth. So
that bit of storytelling I loved. I loved that because

(35:33):
we get to see Roman a little bit differently. Will
we get to see him wrestle again in twenty twenty five?
Who knows. WrestleMania to Summer Slam is a heck of
a gap, But whatever, he's he's awesome. That ruled Seampunk Gunther.
Coming out of that, that ruled Cempunk gets to add
another check to his championship total, got to be a

(35:55):
champ in ww in his return and it lasted five minutes,
which I think was the right call. I think we
were talking about it before. It's like, do we really
want to see him as a champ in WWB when
you got all the super young talent that he can
help build. And granted, Seth's not hugely younger than Punk,

(36:15):
but you know that's eventually going to braun, right, Like
that's going to be the move. So I think I
think I felt really good about just coming out of
this event, about almost all of it. I didn't feel
good about Jade the way Mike did until I heard
Triple H talking about it, which was a heady play

(36:36):
on their part to not have a presser and just
have them talk at the booth, because I think that
people were going to have questions after all the negativity
surrounding Triple H this week on social media. I don't
know if you caught a lot of that, but people
are big mad, and I think it was just like,
let's just avoid the questions entirely and sit at the
table so I get to interact with the fans and yeah,
and it's like, yeah, this is pretty clear you don't

(36:56):
want to answer questions.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
But he noted and who hates the spotlight?

Speaker 1 (37:01):
Yes, of course, yes, probably he doesn't want to be
in front, you know, doesn't he doesn't want to take Yeah,
get a water bottle, spit in here. There there was
the talk about Jay going like, well, now what's gonna happen?
Because she was pissed? So what's gonna happen when you
have an unhinged Jade car Cargill backstage. I'm here for it,
I've been saying forever. I don't necessarily want her to

(37:22):
go out and have like a five star banger. I
want her host some people around and beating people up
and just make her Goldburg, just book her better.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
And the reality is there are other members of the
roster that are better.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
Than her and Ring by a lot, and that's okay.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
I would argue lash Legend currently in NXT better in
Ring than Jade right now, lash Legend is more prime
to be a World Champ on the main roster and
then working in World Champ working yea working yeah, but
having matches that are in real matches that are befitting
of that title. Maybe route is Jade becomes a US

(38:02):
or IC champ before the main title, which even I
would me saying that out loud.

Speaker 1 (38:07):
But I would love to have her have the main
title because it makes all the sense in the world.
She doesn't have to have like these these really good
wrestling matches that are like technical matches. She could just
kick people in the face, hit him with a jaded
and be done with it.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
And there's something to be said for presence what she
made lack in reign, and that's it. Present she is
at the very top of that list.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
Tony Tony Kahn is certainly not infallible. But the way
he booked her for the T and T title, our
TBS title, it was made, it was, it was perfection.
They could simply use that formula going forward and book
her the same way and it can be the world title.
It reminds me a little bit of how Gunther was
was booked with the IC title. Granted, his matches are are,

(38:51):
you know, like he's one of the best wrestlers in
the world. He's he's an all timer and already and
everybody that works with him, are like, I want to
work with him again.

Speaker 2 (39:02):
We're all aware of that. We're watching in.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
She and Shede has grown so much. I love watching
her work. I've always loved watching her work, and we
all love just watching her. And I think, like, just
throw the title on her and have her be a beast.
You don't have to go crazy with a twenty minute
technical wrestling match. It can be a five minute match
that's sort of an elongated squash. I guess as she

(39:28):
continues to improve, maybe you build on that because she's
getting better and better and better and better, and I
think I think I can see a day where she's
like really good in the ring and has that presence,
but like use the presence now. The more she loses,
the more she loses some of that aura and mystique
about her because she was booked as a or, she

(39:49):
was presented as a really big deal and hasn't really
been a really big deal since she's been there. I
say that knowing full well that she's like had huge
matches on giant cards, but really it's been in aside
from this, and with Naomi, it's been in tag teams.
So putting putting her out there to to to be

(40:09):
a champ, and maybe you're right, maybe it's us or
I see and then book that like the TBS title,
that would be the easiest route where you don't have
to have that main you know, all the promos, all
the feuds, all the wrestling, all the matches, have that
big build up to that thing, the ic US title.
You can get away with some shorter programs and some
shorter promos and shorter matches. I think that she can

(40:33):
look like a dominant force and look like a killer.
But what I take away from it is they have
enough trust to put her on SummerSlam and in a
singles match, and yeah, she lost. I'm kind of excited
to see what happens next. Man, not everybody has to
be the best, you know, technical wrestler in the world.

(40:55):
I think we talked about John Cena like this before,
where we've seen him do moon salts and hurricane RNAs
and all of this stuff. He just hasn't had to
do that. He's done his other stuff where the sem
punk would call him five moves of doom. He would
just do those things and it worked. Nobody cared. People
were like, all right, dope, JOHNSONA hit him with the
thing he can't see me punch the face and an

(41:17):
attitude adjustment, the the STFU, the FU, the whatever we're
calling these things now, whatever PGPC version we're calling it. Whatever.
We know we can do more. We knew the Undertaker
could do more because I watched the mocap stuff they
did for the video game where he's doing all this
like he did like a standing summersault or something like

(41:39):
doing crazy stuff, and it's like, no, he just choked
slam dudes, big boot to the face, do the old
school and then Tombstone City and that's kind of it, Like,
so what Jade could do that too.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
It's it's a compelling case. I wasn't I was so
in my feelings about her losing because I was so
just I wish she was winning this match. I even
said it on there, so as I kind of get
over my big feelings about that, that is intriguing to
me that I missed the Triple H quote about Okay,
Jade losing a would be the biggest match he's had

(42:14):
since signing with W What does this mean for her
as a character. Now, I'll be seated for that.

Speaker 1 (42:20):
I guess extreme rules come back for her. After that comment.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
Interesting best positive impression specifically with Night one of SummerSlam,
because again we're recording pre Night two, and by all accounts,
the Night two card could end up exceeding Night one.
I am intrigued now by that main event. John Cena
back to his roots, back to being a good guy.
Does this mean we're getting a double turn in the
main event? The Rock is always lingering over this. Will

(42:47):
he show up? Will he not? Is Travis Scott gonna
be involved? Match wise?

Speaker 1 (42:51):
Only one platinum rap is going to be?

Speaker 2 (42:53):
Hey, hey, that was good. The people's main event. One
may say Naomi versus Rea is real sky.

Speaker 1 (43:01):
I cannot wait for that.

Speaker 2 (43:02):
Probably the front runner to open the show. We know
that's gonna be great. There's gonna be the TLC. I
think it's a six way tag match.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
Now I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
There's gonna be a lot for us. There's gonna be
a lot for us to get into next week. But
while we're here, Night one, best positive impression the seth
rollins cash in the moment when he was using the crutches.
Good call to walk to the back, but then he paused,
and I think Paul Hayman kind of gave it away
when he was left. That was intentional. He was holding

(43:31):
out the briefcase for.

Speaker 1 (43:32):
So it was like, where are you going and then
step back like, oh.

Speaker 2 (43:35):
Maybe that was too much of a giveaway. The moment
when Seth Rollins stops seeming like he's going to go
to the back after proclaiming from the entrance ramp that
I am going to cash in on you see him Punk,
just wait till my leg is healthy, use the crutches
to walk back, stops and then pushes the crushes to
the side and the crass fifty thousand plus in that

(43:56):
life just erupted to me. We have these moments once
in a while, when done right in WWE, n A,
w N TNA and the like, where we just think, okay,
this is wrestling, this is why we invest in this
to such a degree. To me, that was one of
those moments well executed. Seth turns around, cash is in.

(44:18):
We have these reminders as well that Seth Rollins he
is that dude Brad For a while, there's this class
of there's Roman, there's Cody, there's Punk, there's John Cena,
and I think for a lot of his career unfairly
Seth Rollins is kind of included in that next conversation,
but I'm glad that he had the moment to close

(44:38):
Night one of Summerson because he really is a pillar
of the company, and like you said, this does further
the long running grudge feud, seemingly never ending grudge feud
between CM Punk and Seth Rollins. Whether it's brawn to
take down Seth Rollins or Punk or maybe Sammy's ain,
who knows. I think there's a there's a lot of
foundational pieces for the main events scen on RAW, with

(44:59):
Seth ro particularly having the belt but quickly best impression.
Love the moment for Charlotte Flair, so great to see
her getting her flowers off that player's tribute article off her,
you know, opening up about life outside of the ring
and how a lot of fans have viewed the character
the Queen Charlotte Flair is actually being the woman outside

(45:19):
of the ring and her kind of said in the
record rate that Yo, I'm vulnerable, I have insecurities. I've
been through a lot over the last year. Love that
she's having this moment alongside Alexa Bliss. For me, though,
I want to go to what you said, Brad Roman
reigns and how infrequent his appearances are getting. We have
to enjoy these matches, in these moments we get yep

(45:42):
with the OTC one. My favorite moment from SummerSlam Night
one was the Roman leap over the ropes which turned
into a tope cone. Hero. I did not realize Romans
still had that in his bags.

Speaker 1 (45:59):
Amazing me.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
The nostalgia of when I was a kid and we
would tune in for pay per views and you would
have moves pulled off that you were not gonna see
on raw or SmackDown. Sure it was only brought out
during papes. That was the moment we got with Roman.
And for him to still be that dude where he
just overshoots this sleep so much so that he rotates

(46:21):
into that and the fact that he didn't break his
neck and that he's fine, it just makes me really
happy and it reminded me of why why we're wrestling fans,
and just that joy in that euphoria you would get
to your youngest days watching this thing that that pay
per view. Aura. I definitely felt that and actually agreed
with Mike just off night one. I thought it far
surpassed the feelings I got from WrestleMania greed. And maybe

(46:43):
that's an expectation thing where Brad, you you knew my
expectations going into this weekend were not very high. Maybe
that's a factor in it, but I was very high
on Night one. And whether it's Charlotte, whether it's Seth Rollins,
Cardi B. Pillars of the Company, Cardi B and Drewski,
or it was Roman reminding us yo, I may not
be here as frequently, but just remember with my white

(47:04):
Jordan boots and all, I am still that dude, and
I still got it. Very positive about Night one is
something so good?

Speaker 1 (47:12):
I agree, man, I agree. Okay, So you brought up
John Cena, and I wanted to bring this up to
John Cena seemingly turned babyface after a promo that I
really like the promo. Don't get me wrong here. I
don't like when scripts get acknowledged because then I'm confused
about what it means for your character. And he essentially

(47:33):
acknowledged the script. Okay. We lamented the build to a
two night Summer Slam that we were getting, right, okay,
knowing that Sina is today and and then we already
got the extra excellent Night one. You kind of already
answered this, but I questioned, simple, how are you feeling
going into Night two?

Speaker 2 (47:53):
Very optimistic, much more so than I thought I would.
And a lot of that is as you laid out
the promo segment on smack Down between Sena and Rhodes.
There is wrestling is at its best when there is
that air of mystery or that air of uncertainty. I
have no idea how this main event is gonna play out, Brad,
between John Cena and Cody Rhodes, and I'm actually excited

(48:15):
for it now. In Triple H I did see in
the not the post show press conference, but the celebration,
the roundtable outside the stadium. I did see that he
was on air saying, Hey, if you are on the
fence about night two, or if you dada, just wait,
you ain't seen nothing yet. You were excited about how
this show finished, wait until tomorrow night I would. I

(48:38):
would have to think he has the wherewithal the business
sense to deliver on that. So I'm feeling very optimistic.
As we ran down the card seems just as good,
if not better than Night one, So I'm quite excited
about what's gonna play out what's so.

Speaker 1 (48:54):
Yeah, I don't know how it's gonna go. I think
that if you're gonna do a two night Summer Slam
and hype up Summer Slam is being just as big
as WrestleMania to justify bloating it to two nights, then
you're gonna have to fill that bloat with something worthwhile, right, Like,
it's gonna have to have the fireworks need to go
off at the end, and that is either going to
be fireworks over at Cody Rhodes victory. So there's there's

(49:18):
a couple of possibilities here, right surprise appearances, Cody wins
as a heel. John Cena lied and he's just did
it to get into Cody's head, which I feel like
is the more likely scenario. I don't think he turned
it off just to go like, just because I got

(49:38):
told to do this. By this, I became somebody I
don't want to be. And it's like that's the part
where I was like, oh, man, I really don't like
when they acknowledge that it's written. I don't mind acknowledging
having forces behind the scenes that are trying to change
things around here and all that. I love that when
lines get blurry, but this one fully went like, well,
I don't like how the script was written for me.
That part bugged me a little bit.

Speaker 2 (50:00):
But it didn't seem coincidental that this happened the same
week aswe Unreal Prefers, thank you. Earlier we discussed streaming. Yeah,
this is a just massive shift in the business that
there is a show on Netflix now, five episodes in all,
really revealing the behind the scenes and the storyline element
and the scripts. And it's just interesting that we kicked

(50:22):
off the week with that show being available. Actually quite enjoyed.
I've seen that an episode and a half, quite enjoyed it.
And now, like you said, Brad going to Friday and
SmackDown was seen openly saying I was presented this idea
it was going to electrify the business. That's my word,
not his. And it's like, oh, yeah, there's this acknowledgement
that there's there's writing going on behind the scenes, and

(50:42):
I bought into it and I shouldn't have. And now
the champ is here cheer for me again.

Speaker 1 (50:47):
And it's and it's fine, it's it's fine. We all
know it's scripted, right like Era, Yeah, which is so
it's just so like, I want to be invested in
the character, and when you remind me that it is
just a character, right, then I forget. I forget to
be invested in it because now I'm thinking about the actor.
That's interesting, and that's that's how my that's just how
my brain works that I would be, you know, like
if I'm watching The Force Awakens or no, we're gonna

(51:09):
go Last Jedi here, because people get real mad about it,
even though I love that movie. I don't care what
people say. If if if John Boyega turned at the
camera playing playing Finn and just went, I don't know
why Ryan Johnson would write this and then just kept
fighting stormtroopers in the middle of the movie, like that
doesn't make any sense. And that's what I feel like

(51:30):
sometimes with this, when people acknowledge that there's a script
is they stop to go, like, I know you wrote
this person in the back. But sometimes it's okay. I
like when they acknowledge the business side of it versus
the creative side of it. I love when they're like, oh,
but somebody needed to get their contract. Freaking love that
because that's immediate beef and it's a reason to fight.

(51:52):
It's over money. This is America, man, of course people
are fighting over money, so I love when that happens.
I don't really like when they acknowledge a writer's room
all that much, or a person in charge of in
charge of creative I don't know. The only thing I
can think is the let me rephrase it. The only
reason to mention the rock, even if it's between the lines,

(52:14):
is to set up an appearance, right, Like, if we
don't get that and they set it up that way,
it'll be another kind of like gas lighting by the
WWEE to go like no tune in. He mentioned this,
this is probably gonna happen, And every time they're like,
I don't know why people think that it's not gonna happen,
It's like, well, you referenced it like four times now.

(52:35):
You keep referencing this thing you don't have payoffs for.
People want to see the payoff for it because you
keep mentioning it. And then you're like, I don't know
why people think it's gonna happen, and I just mentioned
it again, and it's just like I don't it's less.
I don't know where the lines are between what's real
and what's not. It's it's more I don't I'm starting
to feel like they don't know where the lines are

(52:57):
and they're not creating a sense of, Oh, the real
thing might not be real, or the fake thing might
be real. It's more like, hey, we're going to show
you inside. We're doing a little too much inside baseball
during the show. Do it during the press conference, dope,
use the press conference for a vehicle for future matches cool?

(53:20):
Doing them both at the same time confusing, and it's
aw is super guilty of doing that too. John seen
his interviews have been about his character change and about
being a heal and he acknowledges that it's all scripted
and all that, So I guess this is in line
with those kinds of things, But doing it on your
main show to get people interested in a pay per
view that's not really pay perview subscription perview. It's it's

(53:44):
a little confusing to me. All that being said, all
my complaints about that, I'm still invested because of the promo.
So maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
Maybe that's it. Maybe maybe they're right. I'm dumb. The
way the work mark mark mark.

Speaker 2 (53:59):
The way they the way w W is forming of
these cars cars is also really savvy. We're starting at
three pm. You and I love that on the West Coast.
I would imagine our East Coast audience, you know, really
enjoys that as well, that we don't have to stay
up until.

Speaker 1 (54:14):
Especially show already started a half an hour ago.

Speaker 2 (54:17):
Yeah, exactly, Okay, it's it's six matches. It's starting Mattne
for the West Coast, early evening for the East Coast.
They've just been very savvy about this, and on on
Night two we didn't even mention Larra Valkyrie versus Becky
Lyncha running it back. You have Jacob Fatus for Summer
Slam as a single star against Solo so CoA and
is Steel Cage. I really like how they've built where

(54:37):
Night one seemingly universally praised and the Night two could
even far surpass what we saw. So some of you
know our predictions. By the time this is released, our
audience will know what actually happened. But the fact that
we can actually have a multi minute conversation about these
different theories and possibilities because we're looking forward to it,

(55:00):
it is a sign of progress compared to where I
was as a fan, just even last week here on
the podcast.

Speaker 1 (55:05):
Brad, Well, we're gonna find out we have a couple
of hours before we're really into it. I know you
have some things coming up. I'm sure you'll you'll talk
about it in the what do We miss or the
closing later on here today, But it's about a different
day right now. It's about back in the day, Tyler.

(55:27):
We got to get into it. We got to play
the music. I was not aware of this until I
saw it on on the pod flow. So let's get
into it. Play the music, and now.

Speaker 2 (55:41):
It's time to get through school. Prepare yourselves for back
in the Day. It's a great transition, Brad. Mariah carries
the Emancipation of Mimi album Somehow turned twenty this year now.
Admittedly she dropped the fourteen track fifty minute project on

(56:03):
April twelfth, two thousand and five, so the official twenty
year anniversary was several months ago. When I tell you,
this is one of my favorite pop, slash, R and
B albums of all time. It includes guest appearances from
Jermaine Da Pri, Pharrell Snoop Dogg, pre White House Support,
and more. It's my favorite album in her story distography.

(56:26):
The first five songs, Brad, can we talk about this?
The album begins with It's like that, then we go
to we Belong Together, to shake it Off, to really
slept on track Mine again, and then also say Something
with Snoop, which is an awesome track. First five songs
absolutely can't miss, no skips and to me, there's something

(56:47):
special about a woman being in her bag. This was
really when I discovered the beauty and brilliance of Mariah Carey.
I remember her being in Miami at a concert, you know,
singing of fans being all into and her just being
so confident in where she was at in her life
and career seemingly and it really is my favorite era

(57:08):
of Mariah. And then, Brad, you fast forward to summer
twenty twenty five, all these years later and Carrie still
being a big deal. She released the single Type Dangerous
earlier this year. I've seen it on a lot of
Instagram posts and pages, just a reminder of her holding
this undeniably special place in pop history. She's the soundtrack

(57:31):
to many people's Christmases every year, and she's reached the
stage of celebrity where I mean you and I spent
twenty to thirty minutes discussing Hulk Hogan last week. I
think Mariah Carey has done a really stellar job of
maintaining her reputation and avoiding a lot of potential pitfalls
or controversies. I think overall, her Q rating is still

(57:53):
very high. Again, she's still dropping music, but she also
has these songs, whether it's we Belong Together, that will
pop up fairly off and you're like, oh, yeah, I
remember when Mariah made that. When was that twenty years ago?
She's a legend, or again every Christmas she is the soundtrack.
We hear her at Cole's, we hear her at her
friend's house, and we go over to eat. To me,

(58:14):
she's really aged super gracefully as a performer as a person,
which leads me to ask you, not only what are
your thoughts on marian Carey shout out Will Washington, but
also is there an artist whose music has really spanned
all of these eras for you when you keep going
back to their discography and have a lot of positive memories.

Speaker 1 (58:36):
Man, that's still currently going that has that kind of longevity.
I don't know, that's tough. I guess on the way
to school. Yesterday when I was going into work, I
was listening to one of the greatest albums, if not
the greatest album of all time, The Miseducation of Lauren Hill.
It's start to finish, every song on it, it's incredible. Man.

(59:03):
Middle school for me was like the kind of the
punk rock pop punk stuff I love. The Offspring and
Green Day had the album. Duchy had an anniversary remaster,
and I downloaded it realizing that the remaster could have
an anniversary now and I'm starting to feel a little old.
But there's some things that like because it's not musically,

(59:25):
it's not great, but I have this affinity for it
because it was like the soundtrack of my youth growing
up way before my time. There's an album that sometimes
if I just want to get stuff done and I
want like some good tunes in the background, Pink Floyd,
Dark Side of the Moon. Every song on it, every
single song on it, is good, and it's just such

(59:47):
a great album to just sort of play, hit play
and just walk away and just let it go. It's
so good because it it all blends together and it's
one kind of cohesive track made up of a whole
bunch of other tracks and they all make sense together,
and uh, I love that. I love that so much.
Mariah Carey is a great one.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
Though.

Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
What was the song was her first like big hit?
I can't remember?

Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Was it?

Speaker 1 (01:00:13):
Yeah? It had to been honey because it was a
sweet innocence?

Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
Was that.

Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Now? I can't remember. There's there's a few things I
get artists mixed up too, because like that Timeline, I
was probably ten.

Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
She's been on the zeitguys for a long time now,
but unlike other peers in pop culture, she hasn't sullied
her reputation or my opinion, g legacy.

Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
Incredible in any way. And when you brought up Christmas,
all I could think was, uh, she she has embraced
the Christmas album and monetized it, and she has been.

Speaker 2 (01:00:46):
In commercial and it's like, it's incredible, it's good, very
well financially.

Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
Oh, I guess she She makes like hundreds of millions
of dollars a year for rights for that song. And
and on the flip side of that, another incredible vocal legend, legend,
he's so good. Michael Boublay effing hates Christmas now because
of all the christ He doesn't like being synonymous with Christmas.

Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
Guy.

Speaker 1 (01:01:12):
Yeah, and he's like, I've done all this other stuff.
I've done all these covers of Frank and of Dean
and all these great artists of yesteryear. And You're like,
I'm just doing some Christmas stuff and he hates it,
and I'm like, a man, you should you should just
really lean into it and embrace the heck out of
it and do a collab with Mariah Like that's the
move at that point, Like go out and do something

(01:01:34):
with her, and uh like people will flood to it
and you'll be getting paid for the rest of your life,
like every Christmas season.

Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
And his team clearly you have the game plan, you
got the blueprints ready to go.

Speaker 1 (01:01:46):
Uh yeah, I'm just looking at these these Oh my gosh,
it was it was it was one sweet day. That's
the one one sweet day. Uh maybe that was Maybe
it was Heartbreaker. I can't remember. There was a songs,
there was a song man because she had like every

(01:02:08):
year or two she was popping out albums in the
mid to late nineties. It was like here's an album,
here's an album.

Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
And this was a post that Britney Spears Christina Aguilera.

Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
Oh, this was like pre that and throughout it, and
that's the party before that. Nive ninety five, ninety seven,
ninety nine, ninety nine is when like the pop music,
the bubblegum pop started coming out. Pink at a moment, Yeah,
Pink was Pink was sort of like at the tail
end of Christina and Brittany, Pink appeared and we're like, oh,

(01:02:41):
and this thing, and it's like, now we know Pink
would have fought both of them. Yeah, like pink, pink,
you don't f with Pink.

Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
But Mariah, it's your point, Brad, that's a great point
about the timeline. Thank you for for that note. Yeah,
Mariah's really outlasted a lot of people.

Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
And it's a lot. That's why I say that longevity
is it's a longevity.

Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
It's crazy. I was just shook when I realized earlier
this album that I really enjoy is celebrating an epic
anniversary this year and I had no idea. And the
music is still played on the radio.

Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
Yeah, and it should be.

Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
I still listen to the radio radio Facebook, I like scrabble.

Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
I'm still I couldn't tell you what radio stations are
in the area.

Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
Sometimes it's because I can't get the Apple car Play
to work in the car, and then so I'm just
forced to It's probably user error as well.

Speaker 1 (01:03:32):
I don't have Apple car Play in my car is
from two thousand and nine. I have an Oxport and
a dongle, and whenever I plug it in, the loudest
thing to come out of that phone is the beep
telling me the audio was too loud. Because the volume
is so low coming out of iTunes off of my phone,

(01:03:54):
I have to crank it in the tiny little like
two inch tweeters that I got in my car that
I can't I can't like, I can't sing over the
top of that. All I can hear is me, how
am I supposed to belt in the car on the
way to work?

Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
Come on, that's really unfortunate.

Speaker 1 (01:04:09):
I'm driving a classic man like. I get it so bad,
So bat Tyler, we gotta get into it. I thought
we were gonna have a short one today. I was wrong. No,
it is time, no no, and you know what, I
love it.

Speaker 3 (01:04:22):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:04:22):
If you're still with us, thank you, and we're about
to hit a w send me with your question, Tyler.

Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
We are all elite wrestling, Okay, Kyle Fletcher defeated Dustin
Rhodes become the new TNT champion, as I think we're
building toward the inaugural Women's Blood and Guts, which I'm
very excited for. Yep, and Hangman Page defeated John Moxley
to retain the AEW World Championship. Brad, they say all

(01:04:48):
good things must comes to an end. I'm not sure
the past ten months of Moxley's Death Riders storylines happened good,
but it seems this group could begin splintering soon. If so,
how do you think we'll remember the Death Riders. Furthermore,
if you had to choose which group members, Stock has

(01:05:10):
risen the most since joining.

Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
Marina Shaffir, that's easy. Marina Shaffer That's the easiest one,
because everybody else. I don't think there's Stock rose at all.
I don't think there was any benefit to any one
of them. What did they gain that they didn't have
from Blackpool Combat Club? If anything, they took a step down.
I don't think any of them have been presented any differently.

(01:05:34):
I don't think any of them have gained anything from this.
The only thing I'll say is that they let Claudio
cut promos in his own language. That's cool, Like that
was dope. I like that because it comes off a
little differently when it's in your own language. I don't
think it did anything for Wheeler Yda at all, Like

(01:05:57):
he's if okay, if Wheeler goes off on his own,
now you excited. I have questions, That's what I'm saying, Like, yeah,
I'm hopeful.

Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
But excited he was. This gave him the spot. This
gave him spot.

Speaker 1 (01:06:14):
It gave him a spot. But he he was on
fire when he had that Daniel Garcia feud. When when
DG was was a heel and I think he was
still in two point zero right like or the Jericho
or Yazz, I can't remember which one, but it was
like he and I think it was Danny or was
it MJF had that fight up in the balcony where

(01:06:35):
he like came in. I think he was still wearing
the red tights at that point and coming out to
like the video game theme. People were super behind him
and then he turned heel and then they started coming back,
and then he turned heel again and then rinse repeat.
I mean, how many times is this guy gonna turn heel?

(01:06:56):
Where like the crowd is super behind him, super behind him.
Let's stomp that out. I don't know if they're getting
that back, because I don't know how you position him
at this point if he leaves the group, because he's
gonna get put in tag team purgatory or they're gonna
dust him off to have a match every once in
a while in roh or something. When it's like he

(01:07:16):
was ready and primed to potentially have a T and
T title run, and now I don't know where he
fits because they just they just kind of I don't know,
nobody liked them in there. Nobody was like, oh, yeah,
this guy's a badass. He ate most of the pintons
for them, I feel like he's the smallest one of
all of them. Have them be they need a cruiserweight division,

(01:07:38):
and I think you would be top guy in the
cruiserweight division. He's just it's just I don't know what
you do with him. Marina, on the other hand, finally
got a spotlight, got a spotlight as kind of a
killer and is much more she's she's in a much
more advantageous position than she was before she joined because

(01:07:59):
she was doing the silly hat crap over in roh
and doing the goofy smiles and stuff. It's like, we
know what she did before this, have her come out
and just have never have a smile, just ever she's
always mad and then she's just gonna host people. It's
been perfect for her. So I would like to see
more from her. I would like to see her in
more fights if if it lends itself to that. But

(01:08:24):
I think she is the one that comes off of
all of this looking really really good. I don't know
that anybody that the Death Riders feuded with comes out
looking better. I don't know. I don't know what the
answer is to that. I think it's Marina Shaffir, and
I don't think there's I don't personally think anybody's remotely
close to what Marina came away with.

Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
I wanted to build a case for John Moxley because
granted he's already a multi time champ before. Like you said,
the black Writers, that's crazy, the Blackpool Combat Club, very
different group transitioned to the transitioned it to the death Riders.

Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
But I'm just thinking of who the leader is. Is
it the bounty hunter Brian Keith wearing the cowboy get
you know what?

Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
That this Yeah, this actually could be.

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
That could work. Yeah, a black Cowboys stable, Yeah we
can work. So plus Hangman.

Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
Exactly. I wanted to build a case for this because
either even though the storylines were not good and the
creative where the creative was just less than satisfactory. Brad,
you and I agree on that. Holy you know monks
holding the title for I mean from October through this
summer another multi month title reign, but by far the

(01:09:45):
you know, one of the most one of the winningest
champions on the roster across division men and women. I
think this really cemented him as being the guy in AW.
Hayman is the main character MJF is kind of like
the most unique presenting I would argue the most unique
presenting character in AW. Just a certain or about him

(01:10:06):
is very much AW. He even got AW tattooed on
his ankle. Right, what are we talking about here but
Mock's reminding folks, hey, I am at the top of
this division. I am the ace of this company. This
death Rider's run really solidified that. However, biggest stock improvement,
biggest leap. Although I've wanted to see more in reaction
for Marina shaff Here, I agree with you. There's no

(01:10:29):
denying that her presence now on the show is such
an improvement too, As you mentioned where she was before this.
I am disappointed at the infrequency at which we've seen
Pack as part of this group. I know there's I
think there were visa concerns for a minute, if not
just flat out injuries. Kind of that dreaded mix of

(01:10:50):
the two so real unfortunate because you know how much
of a fan I am of Pack. But I thought
we said about Wheeler was spot on. And then for Claudio,
he's a made man, glad that he's been getting reps
in and sure he's such a technically brilliant wrestler that
that's been great. But yeah, I think Marina Shaffier has
the most compelling argument by far. I will say though,

(01:11:10):
in terms of where John Moxley is in the kind
of company hierarchy. Okay, Chris Jericho, the most pivotal person
to start the company, Britt Baker, the Britt Baker era
where she was really the face of the women's division.
Hangman Page MJF. We can't have this conversation about the
history of ADW without John Moxley. He's what a four
time world champion. Now he's stepped up when everything went

(01:11:34):
down with CM Punk, when there's been injuries. He's always
been that plug and play guy and ultimately say what
you will. And I've certainly levied my criticism him the
bad guy, the vaunted bad guy, losing the Hangman page,
tapping out at the Texas death Match at their biggest
show of the year, all in Texas. That was a moment.

(01:11:57):
I don't know if it was worth the months we
had to sit through the death Rider, but it's inarguable
that the endpoint was great. And again you need you
needed a dance partner for Hangman to make that happen,
and John Moxley is an effective bad guy. But again,
I think we'll remember the death Riders as they're being
so much potential for this group to be great. It

(01:12:19):
started out so intriguing and then so fast. It just
was not good and it dragged on and hopefully Marina
Shaffir will land in an even better position after this.
I do like her and mox being together.

Speaker 1 (01:12:34):
I agree, Yeah, I agree with that. I think, man,
that's a good point man, and it's definitely off looking
like the guy. It's I think the part of it
is that everybody else didn't. Mox and Marina are gonna
walk away from this looking pretty great. Everybody else had
titles and I forgot about it.

Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
Remember when we had a trio's division.

Speaker 1 (01:12:58):
That's what I'm saying, Like, it's just oh that that's
a thing that happened. Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot
and you got it all like.

Speaker 2 (01:13:05):
Three very good to excellent workers.

Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
Wheeler da was a champion.

Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
Will are you just awesome? Claudio one of the best
in the in the rain Pack.

Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
Incredible, incredible, one of my favorite to watch. Why are
we not one of the reasons I started watching aw Yeah, why.

Speaker 2 (01:13:20):
Are we not giving them treatos? Maybe I'm looking at
it more fondly because you know, we went through it, Brad,
I was down bad on so many episodes, Like why
is the Death Riders still happen?

Speaker 1 (01:13:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:13:30):
So maybe maybe maybe maybe, uh, maybe I'm misguided by
the absence makes the heart grow fond.

Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
It was maybe and maybe the whole point of The
Death Riders was to make us hate it so much
that we were like, Okay, the Hangman culmination was worth it.
I this clearly wasn't the plan at the outset. So
uh it was it felt like it was really legitimately,
let's let's hold on to the belt and the briefcase
and just keep doing this until we can figure out
who the guy is going to be. I feel like

(01:13:56):
at some point it was going to be Switchblade, and
then the injury happened, and I you know, who knows.

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
Remember when we thought McMahon was coming in when John
Moxley said early on in the foundation of this group,
I'm answering to the higher power. I'm not calling the
shot top.

Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
Yeah, guess was that I guess I'm going to come
back to that, or was that?

Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
Was that the young bucks this whole time, was that
they were getting though Seamee McMahon was popping out.

Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
Or maybe maybe it's something else. Maybe we find out
I don't know, maybe we find out something else. Maybe
maybe that's the next step for this. Well we'll see.
So my question for you is very much related to
these things. So there were a bunch of rivalries and
friendships that rekindled or are rekindling. We got Hangman and
mox granted it's over, Brisco and Ricochet granted it's over,

(01:14:42):
and Cage and maybe Cope we'll see there was that
was a it was a promo, it was a thing. Okay, Tyler.
Out of those three, Christian Cage cope or the feud
between Hangman and Mox or Briscoe and Ricochet, which of
these would you like to see continue, change or end?

(01:15:05):
I have a feeling I know which one you'd want
to see end? Hey Man, Mox, Wow, I thought you
were gonna go. Mark Briscow Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
I mean, I'm happy for Mark brisco He's in another
main event match this week, this time against MJF. It's
just interesting with the roster they have. Mark Briscoe, it
seems has had the most entering time out of anyone
this year. I just I just find that curious.

Speaker 1 (01:15:31):
But that's interesting because he puts on really good matches,
but he's also like we all know he's gonna lose.

Speaker 2 (01:15:37):
Yeah, Yeah, one would think Christian Cage Adam Copeland. I'm
most intrigued by that. I was really intrigued leaving all
in Texas. In the subsequent weeks, it's cooled off a
bit for me. The Christian Cage promo was extended and

(01:15:58):
kind of subpar, I thought by his standards. I'm all
for shut up and conduct my business Chicago. What we're
gonna watch me shut up and listen while I conduct
my businesm off for that, but he must have said
that four or five times during this promo. Yeah, it
was a lot at what is going on here? We
only have so many minutes in this two hour broadcast,

(01:16:19):
so obviously the match is going to be September all out.
One could argue maybe in the main event of that
show in Canada FTR versus a reuniting tag team of
Christian Cage and Adam Copeland. That's going to be such
a moment for AW I'm excited for that to continue.
But I would like a shift within this storyline. I

(01:16:41):
think they're setting up for Kip Saban and Nick Wayne
to take on Christian Cage and Adam Copeland. Maybe that's
a spotlight a dynamite match in the weeks to come.
I think unfortunately your man's Kip Saban is going to
take the pin in that. Sorry kid.

Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
I can also see Nick Wayne dipping, yeah, being like
leaving him to die in the ring.

Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
The matriarch with with this, Yeah, so to me, that
is that is the choice. I'd like to see it continue,
But also some shifts of I'm ready just to see
that tag match happen, I'm ready to see Copeland and
Cadre unite. But I also thought Christian Cage was going
to be a bit more vulnerable. He started this promo

(01:17:21):
with I realize I am an asshole, and then I
thought there was going to be more of a reconciliation
of what he's done wrong over the past couple of years.
But he really stood ten toes down and I'm a
bad guy, I know it, and shut up Chicago. I'm
still I don't think it was a did nothing. It
didn't lean into the oh, he's our scumbag, we want

(01:17:42):
to root for him. It was just Chris Christian KG
doubling down on I'm a jerk and you fans are
gross to me and uh yeah, I wear cool turtlenecks
like it just didn't. It didn't he hit the beats.
I thought it would so excited for that one, because
I think that end point is going to be really
all but just some some better promo and better storyline

(01:18:05):
advancement this week.

Speaker 1 (01:18:06):
All the ingredients are there. Yeah, I thought it's usually awesome.
I thought it was interesting too. It felt like Okay,
that didn't accomplish anything. No, And I just it's just
it was a long time to say not much because
it was like, all right, cool, this is where he apologizes.
Maybe this is where we start to see that change
and that shift. Instead it was like nothing changed. I

(01:18:26):
got nothing out of it. Wanda the next thing, and
I want to root for.

Speaker 2 (01:18:31):
And right, Christian Cage has been so I don't know
if he deserved a concerto, but right, he has been
selfish and they should be blossoming on their own.

Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
They're absolutely correct in this situation. And I think maybe
going into the Nick Wayne match, I really think think
it's gonna end up being Christian Cage versus Nick Wayne,
and then Kip will probably interfere, which will cause Cope
to come out again and that'll be a whole thing.
But I still think like Cope will be like, no,
you need to figure this out. You are an asshole

(01:19:01):
and just dip and continue to say go find yourself.
And I don't know when that happens or how that looks,
but like forgetting that match clock is ticking, so well,
we'll see, we'll see. I don't know. Maybe maybe this
isn't a thing that happens till revolution. Maybe they're gonna
drag this out forever and really make us hold our breath,

(01:19:22):
which I wouldn't I wouldn't hate because we have Forbidden Door.
We have. There's a lot of stuff still yet to come.
But I think the Nick Wayne stuff still has to
come to a head. I think it will. I think
it'll be good. I think Christian Cage versus Nick Wayne
will be a fun match, and I think Nick Wayne
has to win. But this didn't really do anything, and
maybe that was the point, is to show that he's

(01:19:43):
not ready to change yet, right. I guess we'll find out,
hopefully in a shorter amount of time.

Speaker 2 (01:19:48):
And speaking of Forbidden Door, reasons for optimism confirmed for
that show. Yes, Athena versus Timeless, Tony Storm and Kazutsko
Kata versus Swerve Strickland.

Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
My goodness, Well, maybe that's a good transition, Tyler into
what did we miss?

Speaker 2 (01:20:04):
What did we miss? Okay? First nineteen Media love the
team We Love. Desmond Powell also a former guest, actually
earlier this summer for our WNBA episode, and of course
the host of Hip to the Games. I am joining
him on his show for his you had to be
their series where we give flowers to a hooper of

(01:20:25):
times past. I won't reveal who I pick yet, but
I believe that it's scheduled to drop this Friday. Brad,
you are going to be appearing on Hip to the
Games and you had to be there very soon as well.
So much love Todays and thank you so much for
supporting what we do here. And again check him out
at Hip to the Games. Okay, what else did we miss? Brad?
Let's stick with w corner WNBA talk. There's a report

(01:20:47):
that the Connecticut Sun are being sold to a Boston
Celtics minority owner. Dja Carrington was traded from the Wings
to the Links. Cameron Brink is back, and maybe, just
maybe the La Spark could sneak into the playoff conversation
with this newfound momentum. And then, finally, on a wrestling note,
Arizona Wrestling Federation presents their annual event Overdrive on August

(01:21:11):
thirtieth at Bullshooters in Phoenix. We're excited to see Arizona
rising star Fallen Gray wrestle Priscilla Kelly, the Artist formerly
known as Gigi Dolan, Matt Cardona, Cedric Alexander and Zia
Brookside are all scheduled for the show. It is a
huge show, dackt huge show. You can visit AWF live
dot com for tickets. We hope to see you there, Brad.

Speaker 1 (01:21:35):
What do we miss I couldn't tell you, Tyler. This
this week has been moodles and lumber and three D
printers and stairs, so so many stairs, stairs and ladders,
my guy, stairs and ladders. That's what we missed. I
missed the opportunity to have a protein shake after all

(01:21:57):
of those days. But stairs and ladders for the moment
part is.

Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
Why we messed this week period. Well. You can follow
us at gipod nineteen for exclusive show updates and more.
