Speaker 1 (00:40):
Well, good morning to all our freaky, gooley creepy cool people.
It's jazz and this is giving up the ghost podcast,
so I am recording this real quickly. An intro for
this week's episode. Apologize for last week. I was m
I a on holidays in saying that it is going

(01:00):
to be a super busy season coming up, getting a
little anxious about it. A fabulous, amazing season which starts
like septemberish or whatever. This past weekend we were able
to go out to the s'mores and ghost stories out
at Fort Lorraine in Portage la Prairie. If you've never

(01:22):
been there, like, they are closed for the season right now,
but wow, super cool, super haunted.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, so that place is closed for the season.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
However, our friends at the Winnipeg Paranormal Group will have
a public investigation.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
I believe that is October third, so.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Check their calendars, buy your tickets, and I think we'll
be there to record again. Didn't do too much investigations
this past weekend out there, more so for the ghosts
and the somores and ghost stories, which is cool.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Thank you for everybody that came out.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Everybody was really quiet and shy, so I hope I did.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Okay, I don't know, I.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Don't know attracked my best, but in any event, I
just recalled some of our favorite spooky, scary stories that
we've talked about on the podcast over the last few years,
so hoping to do more of that. It was kind
of cool. Not much of a public speaker, I mean,
like we do the podcast and all that kind of stuff,
but we have a face for audio, but we'll leave

(02:25):
that there. In any event, Spirits of Spirits is coming
up fast at the King's Head pub Please please, please,
please please make sure you come to this one. Special
guests yet to be announced. We have somebody in mind
which is waiting.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
For a response. Super cool.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
More details on that once we know, and that is
going to be September twenty fourth at the King's Head Pubs.
So yeah, a lot of really cool things in the works. Again,
how many times can I say the word works. There
is another public investigation with the Winnipeg Paranormal Group at
the Saint James Museum September thirteenth, the point of this recording,

(03:07):
I am not too sure if there are any.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Tickets left, but watch for their website.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I mean, if you want to get a little bit
of an experience as to what it is to explore
with ghost hunting tools. I mean, they're the people, they
know what's going on. And thanks to them as well
for having me and Tea out to Seven Oaks Museum.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
That was cool.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Speaking of Seven Oaks, today's episode is with the curator
Tracy Turner, who looks after the Seven Oaks Museum as
well as the Saint Norbert Historical Museum. So this woman
is busy, and she believes in ghosts, and she is
also an executive member of the Manitoba Historical Society. Talk

(03:54):
about the trifecta. This lady is busy and yeah she
gets it. So just a wonderful interview, a quick interview
because it was a busy night. I'm hoping how more
of I still got the dull navert I got to
work on. I'm sorry, even a little busy. In any event,
a lot of really cool things coming up. Certainly, please

(04:14):
please please watch our Facebook page that is where we
are most active.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Hoping to record with share.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Again soon, hoping she can come out to some of
the public investigations. If not, the odd spirit with spirits,
She's not really an extrovert person. So hoping to sit
down with her in the pod lounge again and get
some stories like back to the origins of how we
used to do this. So in any event, listen to
today's episode again with Tracy Turner, who is the curator

(04:45):
of the Seven Oaks Museum. Speaking of the Seven Oaks House,
they have a special event coming up called Spirits of
Seven Oaks House. It's a candlelight theatrical ghost tour of
the oldest house in Winnipeg with Matthew Cumis the It's
our September nineteenth, twentieth and twenty six. The production has
two time slots, seven pm and nine pm. So keep

(05:09):
watch for the Seven Oaks House Socials for more details
and ticket informations for this haunting, haunting occasion. And certainly
please reach out to us at giving Up the Ghost
podcast you get put that podcast in there giving Up
the Ghost Podcast at gmail dot com. Send us your stories, questions, comments.
We'd love to hear from you. It's all about sharing

(05:29):
the ghost love right, So on that note, remember to
live every day like it.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Is your last, but never give up the ghost. Joff now.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
All right, so we are recording, So this is Jazz
giving Up the Ghost Podcast and I have the honor
to interview Tracy the curator with Seven Oaks Museum. Thank
you for having me, Oh, thanks for having me. Well,
you know, it's it's a kumbaya, it's a ghost love thing. Yeah,
so I'll throw you questions, probably gonna ask. It's gonna
be busy, it's gonna be really really busy here. So
you know, I appreciate that you would have pick paranormal

(06:03):
group allowing me to come. I always just kind of
tagle on. So yeah, So with the museum, it's such
a beautiful ground, Like you guys really do a good job,
like with the gardens and everything. Like walking up, I
would never have known. It is like an I mean,
obviously the house looks old, but it's really all in
well kept shape. Right, It's stunning.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
It's it's really a gem in the city of Winnipeg.
We are the oldest house in Winnipeg, dating to eighteen
thirty one, so it's significant. But I think the really
important thing to know is that this is actually the
original site for the house too. So you know, oftentimes
when you go to a museum with a historic house,

(06:43):
it's been moved right right, right, This one is in
the original place that it was built, and the foundation
itself was cut by John Angster, so it's like the
whole house was built by him, and it's historically so significant,
right And the log that it on was it significantly
larger and cut back or has it always do you

(07:04):
know if it's always been relatively the same size?

Speaker 1 (07:07):
It was? It was larger.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
So this would have been originally one of the Red
River lots and that would run all the way to
the river. So here we are on Max Street, so
that's down towards Cathedral and Scotia I think right, Scotia
along the river there and then all the way to
McK phillips. Wow, So that's how long Red River lots were.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
That's crazy. Yeah, it's kind of mind blowing, isn't it?
Very much? And so they were originally you know, to
be agricultural land. Well, yeah, that would make sense. And
the original owners were Mary.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
And John and Mary Kster Engster right yeah, or Mary
Sinclair would would have been her prey, her premiry James.
She was made tea, so she was born her her
father was Scottish and her mother was cree.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Nice and she lived here her whole life correct, m hmm.
And from the time she was not born but married.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
And married, Yeah, her and John built their first house.
So to where I left here, you can see this
is part of their first house. And then way over
on the other side of the property there that's the
other portion of the house. They actually at some point
split it and then added it onto this house. So

(08:23):
this the original house dated to eighteen thirty one, and
then this house was built in eighteen fifty one and
finished in eighteen fifty three, so this was sort of
at the time this would have been a mansion, it
would have been.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, yeah, it's just so beautiful. We love history. We
say history and hauntings go hand in hand. Absolutely, yeah,
and we love history. So in saying that, now back
to the haunting part of things very quickly. Yeah, So
how long have you worked here?

Speaker 3 (08:53):
I started in January, so this is I'm not new
to being an amuseum curator. I've had a lot of of
time working in different museums, so, but but my stint
here began in January.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
So I'm still getting to know the place in.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Many ways, still getting to know the ghosts, getting to
know the ghosts. I've had quite a few encounters already,
and today with Winnipeg Paranormal coming over, I felt excitement
around me all day at home, as if like they
were telling me they're so excited that we were going
to be here. So I've had experiences where there were

(09:28):
you know, I've heard objects fall, things moved. I've heard
voices in my ear saying they've been friendly, you know,
like when I come in, I might get a high
or a bye. Yeah. No, it's not been anything. Nothing
that nothing that would be too out of the ordinary
for curator to have happening. I kind of have that

(09:50):
experience everywhere I work. So yeah, okay, yeah, Can I
ask where else you've work?

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Yeah, So I am also curator right now the Saint
Nervart Provincial Heritage Museum.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
That's why you're so busy.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Yeah, yeah, so that's one of my uh that's one
of my other places. I carried out and I am
the executive director of the Manitoba Historical Society for you,
So that's kudos man. Like, you know, we're in such
a because we love history, me and my partner and
my partner and uh just uh, you know that's our

(10:23):
source of information for a lot of that's our starting
point for the information because it's it's credible, you know,
and that's kind of like part of it too. I
mean not just say hauntings are are or not credible
because it is so individual to everybody, so there's not
a lot that you can really follow up, you know,
on your ghost stories and unless people have had shared experiences,
which is always nice too, but I mean it's always

(10:44):
nice when we kind of start the basis of our
research with credible information that's been verified.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
So you know, the Manitove Historical Society, I.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
Mean, our website is a huge source of and wealth
of information. So yeah, I get it. It's uh, it's
it's it's an honor to run that organization. It's on
you know, we're we're really we've really been guiding it
to lots.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
You know.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
We have a lot of digital assets and we just
released a new app which is called MHS Insight, which
is links all our historic sites database right into your phone.
So if you upload that onto your phone, Yeah, that's
our new to do. We just released that this summer.
So that was a big project.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
One of one of the people, uh they do the
TikTok and I do the Ti. We do the TikTok,
so you know, I follow them on TikTok and I
like their videos because it's puts sort of like the
the words to a visual, you know. But no, I'm
really impressed. I'm glad to hear that you're with that
organization because and you had these experiences, because I've always
been afraid to approach somebody for you know, either an

(11:48):
interview or whatever, just because well, you know, maybe that's
not in the wheelbase, right.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Because typically it's from I agree that. Yeah, I would
say that's true. You know, there's a bit of a
I don't know, taboo and sometimes revealing that you might
be spiritually opener, that you're energeticable, right, Yeah. And then
and and honestly, like at this point in my career,
I'm very I'm very eager to share that that I'm

(12:12):
into that and and to kind of show that part
of my character because because that's how we attract people
to a lot of the historic stuff in the city.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
I'm so impressed. Well, because you know, like us too.
We are me and my pod partner, we're women of
certain age, and we've had a lot of collective experiences
and you know, we just find that it's just so sad.
And that's why we do Spirits with Spirits. This new
event that we've been well, we started last year with
the one the paranormal group at Little Brown jug and
now we've moved it to the King's Head, which is haunted.

(12:41):
So that makes that much more spot on, right, Yeah,
off an amazing location. Yeah, and I mean we give
the opportunity for people that you know, if they're held
back or if there have been hold no that never happened,
or that does that doesn't exist. At least you know,
people can come up and tell their story and it's
like the pargeic.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
It gets it off their Yeah, you're creating a space,
you're holding that space.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Yeah, super super important. Yeah, no judgments but yeah, and
so going back to the house and your experiences, we
had a speaking Spirits of Spirits. We had Matthew Coomis
last month as our special guest and he said he
used to work here so he had some stories and
he'll be coming here next month for September.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Yes, yes, so in September eighteenth, nineteenth, and twenty sixth
we have a special event. It's Spirits with Spirits of
Seven Oaks House, which is this immersive, experiential kind of
tour of the ghosts of this place. So that tickets
around sale now from our website, so you can check
it out. It's going to be we're really changing it

(13:42):
up for this year, so you can expect.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
A really entertaining sort of journey.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Through a lot of the experiences that people have had here,
and hopefully people will have their own too.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
I hope I haven't experienced. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get touched. No,
I know you're going to have I'm here for sure,
but I'm okay with that, you know, I'm pretty yeah,
pretty yeah, but no, that's awesome. I don't know what
more to ask you unless anything comes up during the evening.
So yeah, you can always I'll bump into you and
I'll stick the microphone in your face again. I have

(14:15):
my feel my friend, she's friends with me in chair.
She kind of helps me just to candle and we'll
just kind of your own thing. We don't want to
bother people with their own and that's just it. You know,
it's nice if I have somebody to walk through the
house with and we can just bounce these off because
like everybody here with this public investigation. This is their
own experience, so we don't want to impede on well
me ask everybody asks questions, Yeah, like the Grecos stories.

(14:37):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
We have a couple of staff here too, so if
anybody has any kind of thing they want to connect
to the place, they can ask them.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Definitely will I'm not shy, but like I said, you know,
as we get older, like you know, this is who
we are, this is what we do, and you know,
and and we invite other people to share their experiences
and tell you know, because it happened. And basically, ghosts
and spirits are just a science. They haven't really officially discovered. Ja.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
Yeah clinically speaking, no, I agree with you there. I
have yet to come to spirits with spirits. It's always
on a night I'm busy for something. I know, because that.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Was one of the thoughts, I'm like, oh what about that, Tracy, No,
I'd love to come.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Yeah, well you'll do it in the winter, right, We're
going to do it in the winter, so we have
to come sometimes you think your schedule might be all
for you, then okay, that'd be great.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Yeah, because we just actually got the signal a few
days ago that they want us permanently, well, not as permanent.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Great, it's been on a trial basis when you're probably
filling the pace, right, that's what I'm thinking. But you know,
it's like I find social media, you know, do a
good post, Yes, a couple of hours usually at least, right, Yeah,
if it to be a good one.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Yeah. And I do pay for advertising for them of spirits.
Oh it doesn't cost much. I mean we don't. I mean,
there's no many podcasting. This is just like a glorified hobby.
But we're just hoping at some point we catch the
right year or at tension then maybe visible, you know.
But we do it for fun. Yeah, so we were
actually piezbot dot com. Ray showed to us a couple

(16:05):
of weeks ago and said, you are by a panel
selected as the best Canadian paraileman. I heard that. Yeah, yeah,
we've s ten. Yeah, once we hit I think last
October we hit number one. Yeah, because I passed my
ass off that month last year. You know. But anyway,
all glutting glorified. I have it in the background.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
I think that might be something I'd like to do
in the future, but I don't have time right now.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
You know it's it's not a lot, but it's a lot.
I'm sure it is. I don't know how to because
I had to teach myself everything, you know, and that's
only because you know, we came to a place where,
you know, when I was working at my nine to
high job that I still have, and music's nice and
I love music, but it was so repetitive after a while,

(16:50):
and I'm like, oh my god, there's this thing called
broadcast that I'm talking six seven years seven years ago,
you know, eight years ago. And then I'm like, oh,
maybe there's ghost stories. And then all I was fine
is like you know the ghost stories in the States,
or like there's really well known hotel and I'm like,
where's the Winnipeg stories? Like come on, because growing up here,

(17:11):
like it's home to day. Yeah right, so I mean
like you know the stories and it's just like, okay,
sure there is you know fort near hotel there. You
know all the nomes, but there's all the unknowns and
I think I would like to tap into that. And
you know, like you always hear about the house down
the street or the church on the corner, you know
those kind of stories, and I kin'd we kind of
want to perpetuate and give give it a home or life.

(17:33):
We're thinking about, well, we've talked about it before and
I'm hoping this winter, I want to write a book
of all the stories. We'd be great just to documents. Yeah, yeah,
because you know when it's when it goes mouthed, ear
gets lost. Yeah, that's that's unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
It'd probably be pretty easy to just put your podcast
into a transcription, yes, and then you could work from
that for your for your text, and maybe.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
We'll make some money. But again that's not necessarily you
know what.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
I think the more you're building leverage and knowledge, and
then once you have something to sell, right, then you
have the leverage to sell it.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
Right.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
So that's kind of you need the product the product,
you need the leverage to sell the product. So it's
like which one first? Well, yeah, it's kind of like
you build both together, I think.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
Yeah, or notoriety. I would like to have dan Ackroy
on our podcast. I think that would be a good Yeah,
that would be a good guest. We'll have to figure
out the time when he comes, maybe to shoot something.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
Yeah, or I think I have a couple ins in directly,
you could probably just do one remotely too, right, yeah,
just over that wouldn't probably be.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
As much fun though, no MS teams and stuff. Yeah,
I think that would be cool zoom or whatever. But
actually my husband, who is very much a skeptic and
not into he very very supportive, and he comes out
to the events and he helps us. He's seen and
heard a couple of things where he's commitced, but he's
like a type personnel. Oh yeah, yeah, and he actually
had the dream of the first year, year and a

(19:02):
half of of us recording and stuff. Says I had
a dream and then ever since then that's been a thing.
So we'll see it.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Sounds like a good goal post to dan akrosting out
there what we are downloaded are? Because I saw another
one over there. Do you guys have them for your well, uh,
they sell them off, I think, so okay, I'll give
you my card, our card. There's a couple of oh great,
but that's much. Yeah, well, thank you later on. Yes,

(19:33):
meaning it was a pressure.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
We'll be in touch. We'll keep in touch and yeah,
and this episode will be out. I'll start editing when
I get back. And then s s Rober, how the
