time of year. It's Halloween. Wha anyway, Uh, this is
today's episode. It is the ghost story portion from our
Spirits with Spirits at the King's Head Pub back on

(01:07):
September twenty fourth. This episode will be broken down into two,
one today and one tomorrow and coincidentally talking about Spirits
with Spirits Tomorrow is our haunted Halloween October Spirits with
Spirits down at the King's Head Pub, the very haunted
King's Head Pub. We highly encourage you and your spooky

(01:31):
creepy friends to come on down share in some spookiness
with us. You know, it is the time of year,
the veilst thinning, Strange things happen all around us. This
month's guest is Chris Ritkowski. So he is Winnipeg's own
ufologist known round the world. Dare I say, definitely Canada's ufologist,

(01:53):
very well published, very well researched. This guy is amazing.
We've had on our show a couple times before, and
he will be live at Spirits with Spirits tomorrow night.
Not just about the UFOs, right, because he does cryptids.
He does the paranormal overall. He was one of the
original ghost hunters in Winnipeg back in the seventies. So

(02:16):
we highly encourage you to come down. It's free, free event,
and we have a costume contest, so where your costume
for a chance to get in the spirit and possibly
win a prize. That is going to be tomorrow night,
King's Head Pub co hosted by myself, Jazz from Giving
Up the Ghost podcast, and the lovely and talent Ashley

(02:36):
and Kelly from the Winnipeg Paranormal Group. So love those ladies.
Love the Winnipeg Paranormal Group. Thank you so much for
having us out on a couple of ghost investigations that
have been taking place in and around Winnipeg and Brandon.
We went to the Daily House with them a couple
of weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Super cool.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Definitely we'll be back. Thank you so much to the
Daily House for having us out. Thank you so much
to the Saint Norbert Arts Center. We checked out the
ruins that episode. Those episodes will be coming out, oh
my gosh, hopefully soon.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
I have so much to edit.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, I do complain about that a lot. I know,
I do apologize, but it's a free podcast. This is
like a glorified hobby. Do it when I can, do
it when we can, and hopefully those episodes will come
out to by the end of this year. Lot's going
on with the Winnipeg Paranormal Group. Please check out their
website if you would like to check out what happens

(03:31):
during a ghost investigation. Like definitely, there is so many
good opportunities to come and check out what really happens,
and it gives you an idea to use their tools
and the methods to connect with spirits from the other side.
In saying that again, thank you so much for listening,

(03:51):
Thank you for coming back, and always remember to live
every day like it is your last. But never give
up the ghost chap.

Speaker 4 (04:12):

Speaker 3 (04:26):
So we're gonna get started again. Thank you for the
being page.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
You're waiting for the rake and the pics and mites
and we're gonna come back.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
At it now.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
I'm gonna read Perl because so I'll know who I am,
So be my jazz.

Speaker 6 (04:47):
I was getting up a good podcast when it gets
first and only paranormal podcast you can get six and
a half years.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
Thank you, Joy, You've sat Got.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
Declared us the best paranormal podcast in Canada.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah, well shit.

Speaker 6 (05:06):
So sad, and we record everything and we're dabbling in
forty three countries.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Believe it or not. It sounds so weird. We're almost
at forty.

Speaker 6 (05:15):
Five thousand devils, which isn't that a lot, But again
we're regional.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
We just cover our stories and we wanna picking nut at.
I mean, if people want to tell stories for the elsewhere,
we'd love to hear it.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
Because if things are happening elsewhere, you want to know
if it's happening here.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
She's like you know, black children, you know sports, I
know how she.

Speaker 7 (05:32):
Was others, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
But yeah, so we just love ghost stories and paring
our own stories.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
We love to hear the stories, we love to keep
the stories. And that's kind of like why share and
myself mine my Harper. We started this podcast because we
fund that all the stories that you hear when you're
a kid. All my hell, I'm not talking about like
the forty year in hotels and the marm rooms and
all that.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Kind of stuff. You know, like the ghost stories that
you heard it you're the ship out of the are
in the back room of the house. You know, a
lot of these stories seem to disappear from the landscape
and they're not black mentioned it anywhere. So that's kind
of what I want to do.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
We want to preserve with.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
The podcast all these really cool, creepy, cool stories, and
that's the next end.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
So now we want to hear your ghost stories and
there because we had studiences of our own and we
get that.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
So the first version comment tell us their story is.

Speaker 8 (06:35):
Before I call a name, I just want to remind
everybody that it doesn't.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Have to be ghost stories. It's paranormal stories.

Speaker 8 (06:42):
So Cryptis Aliens goes, we want to hear it all
all right.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Tell the four guest is next week.

Speaker 9 (06:48):
Well that's going to the.

Speaker 7 (06:49):
Same look for the end.

Speaker 8 (06:52):
Let's stick around.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
There's a surprise guest the next week.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
It's awesome.

Speaker 8 (06:57):
H So first name up here we have sweet Bee.

Speaker 10 (07:01):
Come all up, Hello, Okay, hello, So I have a

(07:22):
I have two kind of stories. One is very recent
and my witness is sitting over there, and so we
had decided to go buy our friend a gift from
wild Planet Gay wild Planet, and then we went to
boast Spree and we were walking around and about forty

(07:45):
five minutes in, I'm like, Okay, we should probably find
our way back out of this maze of trees and muddy,
muddy trails because it had rained the night before.

Speaker 11 (07:56):
And we get we start walking. We get to this
fork in the past and my friend says, she says,
Oh my god.

Speaker 10 (08:02):
Look we should follow the angel. So we go and
we follow the angel. And I walk up to the
angel's name and it's my name. And my name is Bernice,
so I go by Bee Orse sweet Bee, and my
name was on this tree. And it just freaked me
out because I was not expecting that. I've gone to

(08:24):
many souvenir stores looking for.

Speaker 11 (08:26):
Key chains with my name and there's not one, right,
And so that was And my.

Speaker 10 (08:32):
Mom always shows up as an angel because I have
the angel from her Christmas tree and I have it
hanging in my office, and so she kind of showed
up as this weird angel.

Speaker 11 (08:43):
I just thought, oh my gosh, I am on the
right path, right.

Speaker 8 (08:46):
It was just this odd.

Speaker 11 (08:48):
So that's the first story.

Speaker 10 (08:50):
The second kind of story is a house I used
to live in, and I used to live in Tufrain, Manitoba,
and I used to live down Erindale owed five gravel
miles down this road and it was part of a
larger farm and it's where the farm hands had lived.
And they separated the property out to ten acres and

(09:12):
then the sections of land for the farm. And this
house had so many incidences that people didn't want to
come over.

Speaker 11 (09:21):
In fact, my sister would never like, I'm not watching
our kids at your houses, like it's like things.

Speaker 10 (09:26):
Going on there, and they were very poltergeist dish they would.
So I don't know if people remember the old standing
lamps with the halogen bulbs. So the moment we moved
into this house, the first six months I had I

(09:46):
was a Scout leader at the time, and I come
walking back from Scouts and I have a very long
driveway and it it just snowed, but all the snow
was packed down, and I'm like, that's weird, Like why
is all the snow packed down? I go marching up
and my husband's like, oh my god, b B. Eight

(10:07):
RCMP officers.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Just like came in and kicked on our door.

Speaker 10 (10:10):
And they thought we were a grow off because when
we had bought the house, the previous tenants were a
grow up and from that moment on the weirdness just started.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
In this house.

Speaker 10 (10:23):
And so what was funny was was the same RCMP
detachment that had showed up to kick in our door,
was the same ones that Scouts are, like the same group, right.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
And I was like, oh, this is funny.

Speaker 7 (10:36):
I'm kind of odd. So that came in to speak
to kids.

Speaker 10 (10:40):
So in this house there was a lot of There
was a shadow entity, and we discovered it was this
man that used to own the farm and used to
work on the farm. And I had met the people
who bought the original farm and I had lived in
the farm hands digs and we were both finding pennies

(11:00):
from the same year, which I thought was super weird.

Speaker 11 (11:04):
And we had the same entity.

Speaker 10 (11:06):
And when you would walk up my stairs to go,
the second you would run into someone, I felt like
you were running, literally running into them. I've had lamps
blow out, I've had peep my dogs just barking up
the stairs at whatever entity was running up or running
into you. So one night, my mom's sleeping over and

(11:30):
I'm laying in bed and I hear a whole bunch
like rustling around.

Speaker 7 (11:33):
I'm like, what is going on?

Speaker 11 (11:35):
I opened my eyes.

Speaker 10 (11:37):
My mom is standing this far from my face looking
at me, and I'm like, what are you doing And
she's like, I don't know.

Speaker 7 (11:45):
I just was came to check on you.

Speaker 11 (11:49):
And I'm like, oh my god, okay, mom, go back
to bed.

Speaker 10 (11:52):
You're not in the right room, Like, I don't know
what you're doing in this room.

Speaker 11 (11:57):
Later that night, I finally fall back to sleep, and
a big june bug fell in my head.

Speaker 10 (12:02):
Oh my god, Oh my god, Like, no, you don't
know what it's like to sleep. And then I have
a junebug fall on your face and I'm like, june
bugs are this big? Where is a junebug coming from
in this house? Other incidences are the dreams people would
talk about when they would sleep over at this house

(12:23):
and they would have crazy, like crazy dreams. And I
remember one of my own dreams where I'm standing in
my kitchen in this house and this dream and my
sister in law at the time turns to me and says,
b the phone's for you, and it's a candy phone.

Speaker 11 (12:39):
And I'm like, that's weird, Like, you know, the old
cell phone's a bubblegum in them. She's like, the phone's
for you.

Speaker 10 (12:45):
She hands it to me, and I'm like, that's weird.
And so I pick up the phone and all I
hear is this voice and it's like, you're going about
it now, and I'm like, oh, right now, this yes,
so this hot so wrong? Right, this is my dream.
I'm like, I'm that bubble gum. It's like, I'm pretty
sure possessed. So if I fast forward a couple months,

(13:08):
I'm having a book club.

Speaker 7 (13:09):
Book club. It's a wine club, but.

Speaker 11 (13:11):
We call it book club.

Speaker 10 (13:12):
Don't tell anybody, right, And so we're having this book
club and that's when I meet the neighbor who owns
the other property and she starts talking about how she
has this man that she keeps running into, like and
it's the same guy, I swear.

Speaker 11 (13:28):
And so nineteen fifty.

Speaker 10 (13:30):
Eight is the pennies by the way that we kept
finding and we're like, well, this is getting kind of weird.
And she said, what's really weird be is he keeps
ripping my blankets off me at night.

Speaker 11 (13:40):
And I'm living right, right, And.

Speaker 10 (13:44):
So this this same entity would come between our properties,
would come between our properties, and we would know that
he was there because he would he was very poltergeishish.

Speaker 11 (13:55):
Would he would throw things out of my cabinets.

Speaker 10 (13:58):
He would move, he would cause odd Well, okay, one
last story about this place, because there's like two hundred
stories about the slice. It's it's ten o'clock at night,
it's the middle of winter. My husband the times working
up north. I'm there with my three kids. My son

(14:19):
and I were sitting I'm doing my homework on my
computer and he's.

Speaker 11 (14:23):
Bouncing on my bed talking to me.

Speaker 10 (14:26):
And we hear our door open and close, like somebody
opened up our door and slammed it shut. We looked
at each other and said, oh my god, maybe Dad's home.
So he runs downstairs.

Speaker 12 (14:37):
Dad, Dad.

Speaker 10 (14:38):
We get downstairs and my big door is open with
the dead bolt still locked.

Speaker 11 (14:45):
And it's sitting open, and I'm like, eek.

Speaker 10 (14:47):
And I lived three miles in the middle of nowhere,
so like there's nobody, there's no and it had just notes.

Speaker 11 (14:53):
I'm looking for snow, like for Prince in the snow.
There's nothing, and my door's open. I'm terrified.

Speaker 10 (14:57):
So oh, my brother law, I'm like, okay, you got
to dive here right now, got drive here right now.
You got to close my door.

Speaker 11 (15:02):
So he goes. He looks everywhere there's nothing.

Speaker 10 (15:04):
And he has to put my door with a big
two by four to keep it shut because it just
it wouldn't it wouldn't close, it wouldn't write, and it's
just a big old wood door and it.

Speaker 11 (15:18):
Would not close.

Speaker 10 (15:19):
And so he had to put this thing in front
of the door so it would close. And what freaked
me out is that we swear we heard it open
and close, like we didn't hear it just yeah. So
it was kind of this house had this this this
creepy energy to it, and.

Speaker 11 (15:34):
I don't know.

Speaker 10 (15:34):
I lived there for about four years and I got
to say, we sold it right away, and it's changed
hands several times, several times. And that's the story of
my house intoframe.

Speaker 11 (15:46):
So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 8 (15:51):
All right, right next we have Gina. Come on up, Gina, Hi,
hi'd you nine? I stay too, you too.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
I have like tons of stories, but trying to figure
out which ones to talk about comfortable.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
I'll start with the one with my son.

Speaker 5 (16:25):
So when I moved into this house, uh back home
in the country, he'd have night terrors all the time,
wake me up in the middle of the night. And
then he suddenly had a friend, his invisible friend.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Oh and his name was hoy.

Speaker 5 (16:40):
So one day when he was in school, uh they
were he had just started school, and I was up
putting up blinds in the dining room and I'm in
the country and then I see this little boy come
running by and he wasn't from this era, and I'd like,
you're trying to be logic col about it, and I

(17:01):
know it's not my son, but in my head, I'm thinking,
why is my son out there?

Speaker 2 (17:04):
He's supposed to be in school. But this little guys
he's running by.

Speaker 5 (17:08):
He's got these little plaid kind of knickers and a
little little beige colored shirt and a little tie, and
he's running by and he looks at me, and then
he doesn't do it other than look at me as
he's running by. And I'm like, there with my you know,
my stuff, trying to hang my blinds, and I'm like,
so I watch him and he just disappears and he's

(17:29):
running by, and I get down.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
I went outside. I'm looking around.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
We lived in these trees, so I'm walking around outside
trying to see if I could find him.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
And I know what I saw.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
He disappeared. He didn't go running out of site. So
my son continued to talk about this boy, his buddy.
And one time we went into town to get groceries
and we're in a mall and on the way out,
he's telling me we got to wait for his friend. HOI,
And I'm saying to him, we don't have time for

(18:01):
your friend.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
For gott to go. So we leave and he cries and.

Speaker 5 (18:06):
He's he cries because he left his friend behind. And
he tells me later on he never saw his friend again.
And one day, while we.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Were living here, my son is much older, I asked
him about his friend.

Speaker 5 (18:20):
Hoy said you remember him? And he goes yeah, And
I said, can you describe him? And was the same
little boy that I saw run by? So I was
pretty wild.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
It gave me the chill, still gives me chills.

Speaker 5 (18:32):
Which town is this some do I was on the reserve, Yeah,
out of like forty five minutes an hour and a
half out of here.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Yeah, So we left him in Portal Prairie.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
Spook Yeah.

Speaker 10 (18:54):
And then.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
A little bit of a sad and weird story.

Speaker 5 (18:59):
But when my mom passed away, it was she was
in the hospital and I had this feeling I needed
to go back to go stay with her. I'd been
staying with her and I finally went home to sleep,
and I just something was telling me I need to
go home. I'll go back, and I couldn't sleep, and
all of a sudden, the phone rings and it's a

(19:21):
doctor telling me my mom had passed away. And we
weren't expecting it. I did, but the doctors didn't think
I think it was going to happen. I just hung
up the phone, and the phone rings and it's my
daughter and she said, what happened Mom?

Speaker 4 (19:34):
And I go, what do you mean?

Speaker 5 (19:36):
She goes, Grandma just shook me awake. Yeah, so she
was pretty close to my mom, so she knew that
my mom was gone. But from then on in my
house here in the city, I kept hearing somebody walking
through my house and probably about the time my mom

(19:56):
passed away, but my dog would hear it, so I
knew I wasn't hearing things.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
My dog would wake up and he'd growl. So one
day there I.

Speaker 5 (20:07):
I finally let my dog outcause I thought my son
had come home to I hear someone come in. My
dog's barking. Now I let him out my bedroom. He
goes running and he runs down the stairs. So I
I went to the bathroom and come on, I'm calling him.
My dog's still barking and growling. So I go there
and I yelled, tell my son, get the dog. His

(20:28):
name is Bob. Get Bob, Come get Bob. And there's
no no sound. So I go downstairs and there's nobody there.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 5 (20:38):
So the walking in my house didn't stop until I
one day one night, I just said, what do you want?
Cause I was so tired. Every night I'm waking up
the same time, and I said, what do you want?
Just tell me what you want or leave me alone.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
And then it stopped.

Speaker 12 (20:53):
Okay, ye, all right, Bill, are you ready, it's your turn?

Speaker 7 (21:14):
Welcome Bill, Thank you.

Speaker 9 (21:18):
All right.

Speaker 13 (21:18):
This isn't in Winnipeg, though, I'm born and raised in Pittsburgh,
so this is where it happened. I was about six
years old. We moved into this place where renting it,
and my mother was obviously not the smartest person on
the planet because there were pentangrans all over the place,
thends up the walls in the attic. In the basement

(21:41):
there was a bathroom stall, so if you sat down
to take a ship, there was a demon behind you
on the wall.

Speaker 9 (21:49):
Not good at picking houses. So for a long time
we had seen it looked like like the Gordon's fishermen,
the yellow raincoat.

Speaker 13 (22:00):
We would see him in the windows on the second
floor and the first floor all the time. The windows
would bust outwards, so at first they thought somebody has
thrown rocks through the window. But they were breaking outwards,
which considering everything all over.

Speaker 9 (22:16):
The walls and floors, that shouldn't been a shock. So
the one day, I'm at the bottom.

Speaker 13 (22:21):
My room is at the bottom of the attic stairs,
and then you would kind of go around the corner
and there was my grandmother's room, my mother's room, and
my little sister's nursery. She was probably three or four
months old, and hay to reveal my age, but I
was listening to Linda rodsat record or something like that
at the time, and something ran down the attic stairs

(22:44):
and I mean stopped, super loud, stumped. All the doors
shut on the second floor, all simultaneously at the same time.
So my mother and grandmother ran out of the bedrooms,
go to my little sister's room. She's not in the
crib anymore, she's in the corner underneath the pile of clothes.
We moved out like a week later, I mean so

(23:07):
the owner about a month later tried to burn the
house down. He got caught for an insurance for audios Italian,
so anyone ever.

Speaker 9 (23:14):
But then, so after we moved out.

Speaker 13 (23:20):
Of there, I'm pretty sure I had an attachment of
some sort my night my like nights were plagued with
nightmares for years, like six so until about ten, I
was plagued with nightmares like I would kill myself. You know,
they say if you die in your sleep.

Speaker 5 (23:37):
You die.

Speaker 13 (23:38):
It's not true, because I thought if this thing killed
me that something bad would happen.

Speaker 9 (23:42):
So I would jump off bridges, I would jump in
front of buses.

Speaker 13 (23:45):
Like I literally killed myself every night in my sleep,
and eventually nobody could help me. My mother knew, she
knew I was telling them the truth, but nobody couldn't
do anything about it. So I went to library and
I started reading.

Speaker 9 (24:01):
A cult books, and eventually I started.

Speaker 13 (24:06):
Trying to figure out how to do spells, how to
figure out how to get rid of this because nobody
can help me with it. And then eventually, one day,
after trying a bunch of different things.

Speaker 9 (24:17):
It just stopped.

Speaker 10 (24:18):
It just stopped.

Speaker 9 (24:19):
And here I am fifty years old.

Speaker 13 (24:23):
Now, I've been practicing which and demonology and a cult
for forty years now and I've never had a problem again.

Speaker 11 (24:30):
But it was quite the journey.

Speaker 10 (24:33):
It was.

Speaker 13 (24:34):
I was a believer from a very very early age,
and I've seen so many things since then, like it's
anybody who thinks that it's just hooky and it's all
over our imagination has never really had.

Speaker 9 (24:49):
The experience like that before. Right, So it's a short story,
but it was very crazy and it changed.

Speaker 7 (24:55):
My life forever.

Speaker 13 (24:56):
Here I am still now today practicing all that stuff. Right,
So it really really had an impact. And if you
do have issues, find people who know how to handle it.

Speaker 10 (25:05):
Stuff.

Speaker 9 (25:06):
Right, I had to figure it out, and there are
ways to deal with it.

Speaker 12 (25:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (25:11):
Thankfully there's not as much stigma and there is more
knowledge out there nowadays that people are able.

Speaker 13 (25:17):
To get help very much so, right, And like hon'efullieve
everything's seen on television on those shows, because they're not all.

Speaker 11 (25:24):
Really good shows.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
The TV shows are all for entertaining.

Speaker 9 (25:27):
I mean some of them might be all right, but
and I've learned some stuff from the lot. They are
absolutely I mean, do you learn about the equipment too.

Speaker 8 (25:35):
I can't say that I've ever been on an investigation
or multiple where somebody has got you and possessed on
every single time, but you know it's still fun.

Speaker 9 (25:46):
Well, like attachments and stuff are real. I've had My
mother was not a good person.

Speaker 13 (25:52):
And I knew a very good psychic on this lady
red blank tarot cards and everybody paying two hundred dollars
in the eighties and nineties to go see this lady.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
I want to go.

Speaker 9 (26:01):
I was very big in the community back then.

Speaker 13 (26:03):
This is once again showed my age Yahoo Aol chats, right.

Speaker 7 (26:07):
I ran forums.

Speaker 9 (26:08):
Online for like twenty thousand witches.

Speaker 13 (26:10):
And this lady I want to go for a birthday
present take my mother to go get a reading. The
lady was like, you're not letting that lady in my house.

Speaker 9 (26:18):
She has all kinds of shit all over her and
I'm sorry, go but get fuck out.

Speaker 13 (26:23):
Wow.

Speaker 9 (26:23):
I was like, but it's all real, Like it's not bullshit,
Like people weren't joking.

Speaker 13 (26:28):
Like when people come up here and have to say
that experiences they probably have, like it's not it's not bullshit.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
No, I agree, we get it.

Speaker 9 (26:35):
Say yeah, but that's all I got.

Speaker 5 (26:38):
That's all.

Speaker 8 (26:39):
That's thank you. I appreciate it, thank you for so much. Okay,
let's say that.

Speaker 5 (26:47):
All right.

Speaker 8 (26:47):
I've got one more name on my list.

Speaker 9 (26:49):
If anybody wants to come and sign their name and still.

Speaker 8 (26:51):
Available, I just have it on the side here.

Speaker 12 (26:54):
But otherwise we'll just open it up afterwards.

Speaker 8 (26:57):
Scott, come on up, tell your story.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
I thought, hello, thank you, so long haul from the back,
I guess worth the way.

Speaker 3 (27:17):
There you go.

Speaker 7 (27:19):
Well, this is not Winnipeg. This did take place in California.
It was the nineteen nineties. I'll kind of set the
scene living in Orange County. My wife and I are
theater people. We were working at the Laguna Playhouse at
the time and bought a house in a development about
thirty minutes away from the beach from the canyon. The

(27:42):
big attraction of the development it was called Cota de Casa.
Strangely enough, it was built by Disney, but running through
the middle of the development was part of the Mission Trail,
So huge golden oaks large part of the mission trail
that you could hike. If you're familiar, you probably know
a lot of the history of the mission trail was

(28:04):
rather dark. Our house was brand new build right on
the corner, very California, almost shotgun style, So I'll tell
you how laid out, because that was important. When you
pulled into the garage, there was door. You would enter
the door from the garage, that's how we typically did it,
rather than the front, and that door as you came through,

(28:26):
immediately to the right was the master bedroom, double door,
nursery for my daughter. On the left you went further
down there was the library. There was the guest room
and a bathroom, and then as you continue down you
were in a family room, living room, and then kitchen
and then looking out the backyard. Everything had to be

(28:47):
glassed in because they had to preserve the mission trail,
so you had huge views of these golden othes. So
brand new looking build, very fresh. The name of the
street was Malakita. Obviously, if you're from the West coast,
you speak a little Spanish. My wife, can I keep
going that Lakda? What is I've never heard this? The

(29:09):
closest translation that we could find basically meant ill acquired,
which probably should have been maybe a small clue. So
we were kind of like, well, okay, whatever lovely house
we move in. Not too long after that, we start
to have a few things happen. One of the things
that happens is I keep waking up at like three

(29:33):
in the morning, and I swear I hear the door
from the garage is opening and someone's walking down the hall.
So I get up multiple times, and it's that alpha state.
I'm a very light sleeper, so I wake up for anything,
the coyotes, wilding, whatever, and I check, Nope, door's locked,

(29:53):
and I know it's locked. So this happens to me
multiple times. It gets to the point where I just
wake up and I assume it's my brain doing something.
I don't know why it keeps manifesting this, but whatever.
In short order, my daughter has a invisible friend, Joe,
that she starts to play with, and while she's raised
in the theater, she's super creative. One thing that does

(30:16):
strike as his odd is she's talking. She pauses, so
it's like, well, I don't want to do that.

Speaker 2 (30:24):
Well, okay, but only.

Speaker 7 (30:26):
If we do this later. Yes, so there are these pauses,
but we're thinking, yeah, you know, she goes to creative
drama class, is with us. She's in the theater all
the time, whatever, short order, her babysitters start to mention things.
One of them is our box office manager, and she's like,

(30:48):
I cleaned up.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
A room, but when we went back to put her to.

Speaker 7 (30:51):
Bed, her toys were in a line from the door
to her crib, and we're like, well, she must have
gone back there at some point in time and did
it whatever. Her other babysitters literally get to a point
where they're like, you know what, we'll pick her up,
we'll come back, we'll meet you when you're home, and
we'll bring her home. So they like, load up her

(31:11):
car seat, take her off to the park or someplace,
and bring her back when we got home. So finally,
one night, I'm having this whole alpha state thing that
I keep doing, and I hear the door open and
it's like oh, And I wake up and I kind
of lean over and I look out a bit and
there's this little boy standing in the doorway. He's got

(31:32):
this blunt cut hair, and he has a headband on,
no shirt, a vest, breeches and I immediately think, oh,
he's mestizo. If you know you know that that means mixed,
so typically Spanish and then Native American and I'm like, oh,

(31:52):
you are really dreaming. So I like close in my
eyes and like check again, and still there. I'm like, okay,
one more time.

Speaker 13 (32:02):
This is it.

Speaker 7 (32:02):
I'm really really dreaming. Open my eyes. He's still there,
and I'm like, okay, go back to sleep. This has
got to be a dream. Wake up. The next morning,
my wife and I are getting ready. We're getting ready
to take my daughter in as well. She's like, oh
my god, i had the craziest dream last night. I've
got to tell you about it. I'm like, oh, oh no, wait,
wait me first, and she's like no, no, no, no no.

(32:25):
I woke up like around three thirty and I turned
and looked in the rocker next to me, and there
was this little boy. He looked almost Native American, and
he was blue and just sitting there staring at me.
And I'm like, okay, you're not going to believe what
happened to me. But probably about three o'clock three point fifteen,

(32:45):
saw him in the doorway. So it was one of
those moments where my wife is one of those people
who tends not she looks for the rational. She's had
enough visits to the young canny valley with me. I
think that she kind of goes, okay, maybe there's something here,
and so that was our moment of I guess we
saw a ghost. I guess that was it. The resolution,

(33:09):
interestingly enough, was some months later we would drive my
daughter in because we dropped her off at her preschool
top of the canyon before we headed down to the theater.
And we're in the car and she's talking about her
friend Joe and he came to her in a dream
and people hurt him, like with blood and stuff, and
he was looking for a home and we're like, okay,

(33:34):
and yes, hurt all his friends. And she said, but
I built them a home. That was that and literally
we didn't experience anything after that. It was very strange.
I guess we saw a ghost.

Speaker 13 (33:53):
Awesome, I.

Speaker 3 (33:58):
Mean at least it stopped.

Speaker 12 (34:03):
Yes, we got no more names, No more names, come on.

Speaker 8 (34:09):
Tell us sorry anybody anybody yep, no.

Speaker 11 (34:14):
And also remember to live every day like it is
your last.

Speaker 8 (34:19):
And no forget.

Speaker 7 (34:20):
Don't give up the ghost.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
Never give up the ghost.

Speaker 8 (34:23):
That's how we end our podcast.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
