It helps more lefties like you hear more good news
stories and stay positive and motivated for the days ahead. Now,
let's get to some good news headlines designed to brighten
(00:48):
your day. Costco is suing the Trump administration over its tariffs,
arguing that the White House has exceeded its executive authority
in instant tariffs and that it should be entitled to
a refund if the tariffs are found unconstitutional. In a
lawsuit filed to the Court of International Trade, the retail
(01:11):
giant argued the Trump administration had misused the federal law,
the International Emergency Powers Act i EEPA, that it cited
to impose the tariffs. I EEPA grants the president's certain power,
but they may only be exercised to deal with an
unusual and extraordinary threat with respect to a national emergency
(01:35):
that has been declared for the purposes of this Chapter,
and may not be exercised for any other purposes. Costco
said in the lawsuit. Quoting the law, the largest warehouse
club chain in the US also pointed out the law
does not use the word tariff or any term of
equivalent meaning. In November, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments
(01:56):
over Trump's tariffs, and justices in the conservative majority courts
or appeared skeptical over the White House's arguments that the
IEEPA covers Trump's tariffs, customs, and border protection. The federal
agency that collects tariffs liquidates or finalizes the total amount
of tariffs an importer owes three hundred and fourteen days
(02:20):
after the goods enter the country. Federal courts have warned
that importers may lack legal rights to recover refunds or
tariffs for goods that have been liquidated, even where the
underlying legality of a tariff is later found to be unlawful.
In addition to halting this liquidation, Costco is asking the
Court of International Trade to declare Trump's tariffs illegal, stop
(02:42):
the collection of duties and order a refund for any
of Trump's tariffs that costco paid. Mayor elect Zorhan Mamdani
and Senator Bernie Sanders joined the picket line with striking
Starbucks workers in Park Slope, New York this week. The
workers at unionized stores have been on strike since last
(03:04):
month as they demand a contract that includes better hours
and higher pay. These are not demands of greed, These
are demands for decency. Mom Donnie said, these are workers
who are simply asking to be treated with the respect
they deserve. They're being asked that their labor be repaid
in a manner that allows them to build a dignified life.
(03:25):
Sanders has been a big supporter of Mam Donnie, a
democratic socialist who ran on populist worker friendly policies. Starbucks
Workers United represents more than twelve thousand baristas at over
six hundred locations nationally. Striking Starbucks workers are telling this
company that they are sick and tired of corporate greed
and sick and tired of union busting. Sanders said on
(03:47):
the picket line, what is happening here on this picket
line is happening all over this country. We are living
in an economy where the people on top have never
ever had it so good. So this week Starbucks agreed
to pay around thirty nine million dollars to more than
fifteen thousand New Yorkers to settle claims by the city
(04:08):
that the company violated laws requiring it give workers predictable
and stable schedules. Before we get back to the news,
I want to tell you about an important podcast called
This Week Again, hosted by Suzanne Posel. It takes a
humorous look at politics and current events one week at
a time. It's a funny, angry, progressive, sarcastic, hilarious podcast
(04:32):
that drops every Sunday and, in my opinion, is the
largest single repository of creatively insulting names for Donald Trump.
Mango Mussolini, and Orange Julius Caesar are just the beginning.
So if you want to recap of the week and
you want a laugh into the bargain, listen to This
Week Again with Suzanne Posel on this platform or wherever
(04:54):
you listen to podcasts. That's This Week Again with Suzanne
Posel sus An Poseel This Week Again. Listen, Laugh, repeat,
Washington state lawmakers next year hope to reign in law
enforcement's use of automated license plate readers amid revelations that
(05:16):
federal immigration authorities are using the data. The readers are
mounted everywhere, from street polls to police patrol cars. They
take pictures of vehicles and use artificial intelligence to analyze
the data. Police can use the information stored in a
database to track vehicles that could be tied to criminal investigations.
(05:37):
At least sixteen states regulate the readers, Washington does not.
The technology has become increasingly common in Washington and across
the country, and is used not only by police, but
also businesses and community groups. Washington's chapter of the American
Civil Liberties Union is leading the charge to regulate the
(05:57):
license plate readers. A report last month out of the
University of Washington found several local police departments authorized US
Border Patrol to use their license plate reader databases. Illinois
Governor JB. Pritzker signed a bill into law to create
a weight limit exemption for clean energy trucks. The change
(06:17):
could help businesses using hydrogen and electric vehicles. The legislation
calls for a two thousand pound allowance for vehicles operated
by engines fueled wholly or partially by natural gas, electric batteries,
or hydrogen fuel cells. Sponsors filed the plan to help
a Southwest suburban company working with DHL to add hydrogen
(06:39):
powered trucks to their US fleet. This two thousand pound
weight allowance would bring the weight for cargo closer to
the weight that is available for a diesel vehicle, contributing
to smoother traffic, less greenhouse gas emissions, and quieter travel,
said Senator Meg lafren Cappel, Democrat from Shorewood. The law
passed out of the Senate on a forty four to
(07:01):
eight vote and received a seventy five to thirty seven
vote in the House. The change will take effect on June. First.
Up next, a listener suggested story back in a minute,
and now a listener suggested story from Julia in Pasadena, California. Recently,
(07:22):
Californians across Monrovia and Burbank formed long lines outside of
their local home depots, not to shop for the holidays,
but to participate in a unique protest led by the
National Day Laborer Organizing Network. The protest involved customers buying
and immediately returning seventeen cent ice scrapers, a move that
(07:44):
disrupted sales and led to a chaos of mass returns
at registers. It was a move meant to boycott the
home improvement chain in response to immigration and customs enforcements
increased presence at their stores. Hundreds of people parti aticipated
in the ice scraper boycott, which also involved picketing in
parking lots with chants of ice ice out of Home Depot.
(08:08):
The message is clear, scrape ice off your properties, shared
one Instagram user. This is a necessary escalation. Home Depot
has ignored the harm for too long. We will not
Ice is escalating violence, so we are escalating action. Protesters
also gathered outside of home depots in Charlotte, North Carolina,
(08:29):
a city that saw a surge of ice raids in
recent weeks. Thanks so much for that story, Julia. If
