Yeah, it starts getting out ofit. Sure it doesn't. It's
a stupid partner of yours. Havestupid irish. He gets real courageous when
(03:00):
he wins a few bucks diamond JimGrebb, I think he's been taken ground.
Kid. Let's stay away from someof those wild clings. He gets
a low ball with Jack's wild. What is that really? Well, it's
almost that he had something wild andlord oh he didn't play and he was
just kidding with my money. Hewas kidding. May I have your attention
(03:21):
be few people out there on theother side of the wild the audience.
Okay, thank you. My nameis Greb, Sergeant Matt grev i' let

the end of each line. WhenI ask for questions or identifications, call
(03:45):
out the number. If you're shore, are not too short of a suspect,
have him held the officers who tookyour name. When I assist you,
they are seated among you. Whenthe prisoners leave here, they are
sent to the last room and dressback into their jail, for it makes
it quite difficult to bring them backafter they leave here. The questions I
asked these suspects, I'm merely toget a natural tone of voice, So
(04:10):
do not pay too much attention totheir answers, as they often lie.
Okay, bring on the line, all right, come on, keep it
moving right over here at the endof the stage. Now turn and face
but hands to your sides, lookstraight ahead. When I call your name

(10:35):
with both of them gone for aweek didn't you miss h When Green left,
he said he and his wife areplanning a short trip. I didn't
think anything until I opened that trunk. Boy, that was the most awful
thing I've ever seen. I'll thinkabout that the rest of my life.
Did the Greens arguement? Not toomuch? They had a couple of good
wood. But who don't wait mywife gets home. She never did like
(11:00):
Green told me I should get ridof them. Why she want that?
She didn't like him. Green toldher the mind of business one day,
and she didn't like him after that. Not much reason though, she you
and me. I wish small peoplewould tell my wife the mind of business?
What do you know about the Greens? Where they come from? They
told me Kansas City, Missouri,Missouri. Oh yeah, there's a Kansas

(11:46):
He paid his rent. I neverasked him what he did. He
went very friendly, didn't go outmuch, but won a good description.
Oh, I can give you that. You know. I never thought i'd
get mixed up like this. Youread about things like this, but you
never think you're going to get mixedup in the coffee. I think it's
(12:07):
boiling over the excuse me? Surewell you think ben? I don't know.
Husband, sure looks like it.It isn't. He gotta have a

(12:41):
a woman and stuffed her in thetrunk. Yeah, I heard everybody's making
coffee. I was getting tired. You want something, Yeah, don't take
a cup. Any suspects her husbandhe disappeared about the same time the woman
was killed. Manager gave us apretty good description, and lab boys got
(13:03):
some clear prints from the room runninga check on them. Mound Hey a
little strong, and it probably is. I didn't measure. Got any identifications

bring some of that coffee. Youcould give it to stillman one swallow all
that stuff. And you confess toanything, You're sure you get them grouchy
(13:46):
in your old age. And you'dthink, after being married eleven years of
at least to learn how to makea good cup of coffee. Molly's neglected
my education. Oh no, Idon't blame your false on that sweet little
girl. Ah, you're prejudiced becauseyou te tell you what about the woman
in the trunk? How long?Dave says about a week? He's done

Bo? Who's that you got?Three? Oh? I'm real tired,
(14:28):
Lieutenant. Can I rest for awhile? You know? In my case,
Bob, I have to ask clan. I've been asking him for the
last hour. They won't tell mewho else was an apprentice job? You
know who else was in on?It? Worked? On traving. John
just blame. But I'm Bob hereand nuts. You're just trying to work
us. Look, Bob, sixwitnesses identify the three of you. For
(14:50):
Pete's sake, lay off. Idon't care if six dozen people identified us.
I'm just tired, Bob. Yeah, yeah, what is it?
But it's important. I wouldn't.If you're smart and you're I can't,
well you better. We got areport on us, Prince from Green's room.
You know where Green is. BennyKirk got an FBI kicked back on
(15:15):
him. A really interested in theway I should be. They rate Kirk
number one. I'm not gonna havehim. Who wouldn't. What about the

If she's got a minor record, got an APB a few minutes ago,
we wait for me. I'll beright out. Don't believe what you
said, Bob. We know whatyou were doing, and why keep fast.

(29:19):
out of here. This stuff ismaking me sick. Hey, h ooh,
bitch Amy the lineup or before youpassed the innocent, the vagrant,
(29:45):
the thief, the murderer. Listenagain next week when we again bring you
the lineup. Hey, I haveyour retention. Read a few people up
there on the other side of thewire the audience room, May I have
your attention? Please thank you.My name is Greb, shouting Matt greb
(30:07):
alexplain the lineup field each to thesuspect. You will say will be numbered.
I'll call off a number the nameof John. If you have any
questions identifications, please remember the numberside of the present. The line up,
(30:36):
starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrieand Wally Mayer as Sergeant Matt Grebb,
is written by Blake Edwards, withmusic composed and conducted by Eddie Dunstetter.
Featured and tonight's cast were High Everback, Howard mcneer, Peter Leeds,
Clayton Post, Dave Young, SidneyMiller and her Butterfield. The lineup is
(30:57):
produced and directed by High Welcome BackWell. What stands out to me in
this episode is the performance of WallyMayre as a sergeant Matt Grabs. Sadly,
this is believed to be the lastoriginal episode featuring Wally Mayer. There
(31:26):
are two other episodes, but bothare marked on the Digital Deli as possible
rebroadcast, so this very well couldhave been the very last one that Wally
Mayer originally recorded, with the twoprevious ones being reruns. This episode aired
on on November twenty ninth, nineteenfifty one. There were a couple episodes
(31:52):
after that, the December sixth onthe Bastile Bound Bad Boys case, but
that one we don't have in ourpossession, and then there was three episodes
that were marked by the Digital Bellyas possible rebroadcast. Mayor died on December
(32:15):
twenty seventh, nineteen fifty one,a little less than a month after this
episode aired, and it was definitelyI think it's going to be hard to
imagine the lineup without him because hereally brought a great amount of humanity to
(32:35):
the character of Matt Gribb and reallythis great dynamic between him and Bill Johnstone.
That's just a classic. I haven'tlistened to a ton of the post
Wally Mayor episodes, but it's definitelya huge loss to the program. It
should be noted that December nineteen fiftyone was not a good month for great
(32:59):
radio character actors, playing the sidekitcharacter on a detective shows that same month.
Earlier in December, bartiny Yarborough, who played Ben Romero on Dragnet,
passed away, and they actually madethe episode The Big Sorrow in which Ben
(33:27):
Romero died in the story I've neverheard in any of the episodes I've listened
to Postmatt greb any acknowledgment of thecharacter, but he actually died on the
day that The Big Sorrow aired.Well, here Greb. I believe in
a couple of these future episodes thatare rebroadcast, but this is the last
(33:52):
original one, and in many waysI have to wonder, as I've listened
to this performance by Mayor, howmuch this influenced the character of Frank Smith
that would come on Dragnet because thecharacter that Wally Mayre played was very different
(34:13):
than Ben Romero. Romero was,I think while he was married, he
was a lot more of a grumpycharacter, while Mayor played Matt Greb as
this very quirky, fun character wasjust a lot of different characteristics, including
(34:35):
trying to get the single lieutenant marriedoff. So it's it's definitely as I've
listened to this, I can definitelysee how somehow or another, if not
influencing Jack Webb directly, it mayhave influenced Ben Alexander. I mentioned this
(35:00):
possibility before, but Ben Alexander wasa game show host and businessman prior to
taking on this responsibility, so it'sfair, and he was a fan of
Dragnet, so it's possible he alsocould have listened to the lineup as well.
So it's definitely an interesting question asto how much you know Dragnet definitely
(35:23):
influenced the start of the lineup, but did the lineup in some way influence
the much better known Dragnet program. All right, well, that will do
it for today. We'll be backwith another episode of the Lineup next week.
