(00:13):
Indeed, Eastern Hill you. Thisis Groundless a Justified podcast. This is
(00:46):
a podcast where we watch every episodeof Justified and then come on here and
talk about it. I'm Chris, that man is Randy, and ladies and
gentlemen, it has come to this. It has Indeed. That sound you
hear in the background is You'll neverleave Harlan Alive, which means only one
thing. It means. This isseason six, episode thirteen of Justified,
(01:08):
the season six finale. The promisealso happens to be the series finale of
Justified, which is a very oddthing for me to be saying as they
do this podcast. You know whatever, what is it? Fifty two plus
twenty six is seventy eight episodes ofJustified. Later we are here and are
(01:32):
this episode now originally aired April fourteenth, twenty fifteen, and our synopsis Raylan
Boyd and Ava fight one last bloodybattle to find out who leaves Harlan alive
and written by It's the cast ofthousands this time around Graham Yost, Fred
Gohl and Dave Andrew and Benjamin Cavell. All names that we are very familiar
(01:56):
with, All names that are affiliatedthat are that are Justify, fed through
to their bones and directed by ourone and only, THEO Tonin Adam Arkin.
So so we've got the bone offe ds, as they say,
for the for the the writers anddirectors of this episode. Now, before
(02:19):
we get into the you know, the the before we jump in the door
and take a quick trip back andlook at what's going on the week of
April fourteenth, twenty fifteen, wehave a couple of things we want to
get to. The first is,don't forget to give us a give us
five in a sub That means afive star review hopefully a written review and
a subscription in your podcast app. Please please go ahead and do that if
(02:44):
you haven't already. I know thisis the last episode of the show,
so hopefully you have done it already. But we've got more to come.
And that was kind of the secondthing I wanted to talk about, which
is what's next for the Justified podcastand or for the Groundless podcast rather,
And we'll have some announcements around thatcoming up in the next few weeks.
(03:04):
We're gonna have a special episode herecoming up in a couple of weeks where
Randy and I will sit down talka little bit about the overall series,
our opinions on the series, sortof favorite moments, least favorite moments,
favorite characters, sort of overarching things, what we'd like to see if we
were to get another season of Justified. And of course we'll talk a little
(03:25):
bit about what we're going to donext, which may or may not revolve
around a nighttime soap opera set insouthern California. AD spoiler alert, Is
it really a spoiler? If itmay ornate, it may not need to
give you that qualify. It's true, right, The qualifier really just just
(03:49):
eliminates everything doesn't all right. Andthen we have one correction from last time.
So our good friend Michael, whowas a guest star during the City
Primeval podcast, reached out to informme that I had misstated a little bit
mistated sort of the the succession ofproperty when when someone dies without a will,
(04:16):
and in California, he's absolutely correct, community property and any community property
state sort of complicates this. Soso there's community property and individual property,
and yeah, the community property generallypasses to the spouse. When there's children
involved, they get a portion ofthe individual property. So it's it's it's
(04:38):
a little more complicated. Check withyour legal expert in the state that you
live in for for information on that. But thank you, Michael for for
that correction, and we do appreciateit. And by the way, we
appreciate your your your appearance on ourpodcast earlier this year, so thank you.
So. Before we get in tothe details of this episode, which
(05:02):
there's obviously there's a lot that happens, a lot to talk about here in
an episode thirteen, let's very quicklytake a quick trip back to the week
of April fourteenth, twenty fifteen, and just see what was going on in
pop culture at that time. Areyou telling me you built a time machine?
We did. And our number onemovie same as last week, Furious
(05:26):
seven, for another seventy three milliondollars. So they're in two weeks,
two hundred and sixty five million dollars, a quarter of a billion dollars for
Furious seven in two weeks in thetheaters. That's that's pretty impressive stuff.
Yeah, and now they're up tofear Furious said, they're making Furious eleven.
(05:47):
Yes they are. Yeah, yeah, No, there's a I guess,
I guess the whole idea with thislast one was that it was a
three parter. I think. Ithink it's like episode or if you're a
Fast X Fast eleven and then Fasttwelve, and that's where they're going to
end the series as I understand it. So it's like sort of like the
(06:10):
the thing they're doing with the MissionImpossible, you know where they're where they're
where. They kind of announced thatthere was going to be a sequel before
they even released the movie. Ohyeah, and so that's what's that's what's
happening with The Fast and Furious becauseit definitely ended on a little bit of
a cliffhanger there. So yeah, how long after they finished this the series
will they have a rebooty? Likeover it's like five years or something like
(06:33):
that. Five years, we getwho would be I don't see, I
don't know any young actors and likeon that Nickelodeon or whatever, who would
be the the Mark Sinclair le onuh in Fast the New Fast reboot?
But yeah, so that's that'll be. That'll be something. Maybe they'll they'll
(06:57):
they'll reboot it with a female star. Maybe that's oh that's right, yes,
yes, they'll have to be somethingyeah, or added to ms.
She might even be too old bythat she's too old. Yeah, she's
too old. Yeah yeah, unlessthey do it, unless they do Like
what was the what were those moviesthe Red where they was it Red with
the old Secret Agent? Oh yeahright, yeah, all the retired Red
(07:23):
style. Yeah yeah, that wasa trilogy too, it was one,
two, and three. I neversaw any of those. I don't know.
I I saw the trailers. Inever saw the movies I saw.
I think I saw the first one. It was good. It was fine.
It wasn't like, I don't know, it wasn't exciting. It was
exciting, but it wasn't like,oh, I gotta go watch the next
(07:43):
two. Yeah, but it's hard. It's hard to mess up a spy
movie, right, It's really hardto mess up like a secret agent sort
of, uh, you know, spy action movie. Like there's a formula,
you follow the formula, you youmake a pretty decent movie. Yeah
yeah. And then the actors aregood in it, are you know,
they're all older obviously, but Malcolmch and Bruce well, Bruce willis bad.
(08:07):
Yeah, and uh, who's theother one that Helen Mirren? Yeah?
Yeah, yeah, Well I wonderI do wonder, like, you
know, like how how often theycan go, Well, how long will
it be before they remove that onetoo? That's true. Yeah, I'm
(08:28):
thinking about like The Fast, Fastand Furious instead of Tyree. It's like
post Malone or something adapted for aNetflix. You Yeah, they're gonna turn
they'll turn it into a TV toa series, a TV series, that's
what they'll do that. Well,we're not gonna make the movies, We're
gonna make a series of TV.I saw that, I saw, I
(08:54):
posted on I tweeted it out, like there was that one remake of Shizer's
List and they had that black ladyon there geese. See what I've always
said about Schindler's List is there's notenough jokes. That's what I've always said.
Is kind of gag reel at theend of that one. Can you
imagine that that set? You know, just I know, like no no
(09:20):
movie has ever needed Leslie Nielsen more. Like, you know, he used
to walk around with a whoopie cushion. That was like his shtick. Like
he'd do like a whoopie cushion onset, and like it would be like
that's the joke, right, It'svery funny. He would do stuff like
(09:41):
that. He needn't remake that becauseyou know, I guess Listen, he
made his like his career originally doingthose like seventies like disaster movies, you
know, like, and then hejust started doing the comedy. That's what
he got known for late late inhis career, because he must have been
like, yeah, he was anold twin when he started in Police Squad.
(10:03):
Yeah. Well, you know theyare remaking it, right, Police
Squad they're making They're they're rebooting TheNaked Gun. Yeah, you know,
you know you know with who?Well, well, Seth Macfarland's writing it,
Oh my god. Okay, andand you know who's going to star
in it? No who, Idon't know who you are. I don't
(10:26):
know what. I don't have anymoney. What I do have is a
very particular set of skills. It'sLiam Neeson's. Wow. How did I
not hear about that? Okay, well, this will be interesting, let's
see. It will certainly be interesting. That's a good way to say that.
(10:48):
It's one of those things where I'mlike, oh, I am very
skeptical, very very skeptical. Imean, those movies are so perfect,
it's it's going to be hard toIt's it's you know what, I think
it's going to be. I thinkit's going to be fine. I think
it'll be like the new Fletch moviethat they did with John Hamm, which
was fine. It wasn't bad.It wasn't particularly good. It was funny
ish, but it wasn't it wasn'ta Fletch. It didn't feel like a
(11:11):
Fletch movie. Yeah, well we'llsee, I guess. I mean,
yeah, cast as the Chance Norburg. Well that's I've got a surprise for
you. We've brought back up Redemptionarc baby. No, no, no,
(11:35):
no, still my favorite. Everybodydeserves a second chance or a third.
Yeah, even off for double murder. Yeah, everybody deserves the second
chance from double murder. Well, you heard about that that woman who uh
(12:00):
uh, we're going down a realrabbit hole here. You've heard about that
woman who who murdered her fiance orwhatever and snabbed him like a hundred times,
and the judge let her off becauseshe said it was pot psychosis.
Oh oh I think I saw that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's
crazy. Everybody deserves a second chance. Still. My favorite scene of all
(12:24):
time is OJ like going into thatboat. They're all there they all have
guns pointed at him because in theirpolice squad and the one guy drops the
c and all the all the otherguys look at him. Tell you to
me, it's so perfect, sucha great one. What I could do?
(12:56):
Oh boy? All right? Whoshould do an episode of Naked?
I actually I actually wouldn't mind.I think it's a little bit difficult to
find. But I actually wouldn't mindwatching the old like police Squad TV show
episodes that I think would be ohyeah, yeah if you could find him
though, right, I think it'sa little bit tricky to find those because
(13:16):
I think there's some licensing issues orwhatever. But that's my favorite joke too,
that guy with Leslie Nielson when hebreaks into some guy's office and the
guy's all, who are you?How did you get it here? I
think Leslie Nielsen goes, I'm alocksmithand I'm a block smith. I've been
(13:43):
swimming in raw sewage. I loveit. I love it. I love
it. Oh all right, allright. So our number one top forty
song in the week of April fourteen, twenty fifteen, Uptown Funk Surprise.
It made it the entire season fourteenweeks, so it for those who have
(14:09):
been paying attention. Uptown Funk wasin its second week at number one when
we started looking at these episodes Justified. It ran the entire season, and
hilariously, the week of April twentyfirst, it's replaced at number one by
See You Again with Whiz Khalifa andCharlie Pooth. So that takes over for
(14:30):
several weeks starting next week after theshow. So interesting. Season six have
Justified and Uptown Funk have that incommon. They ran at exactly the same
time they were Justified aired for everymoment that Uptown Funk was at number one
on the chart. So I thoughtthat was a really cool sort of thing
(14:52):
that happened here, very very serendipitous. I can't even think of what that
you said. It was Whiz Khalifaand Charlie Pooth. Yeah, see you
again. It's called Charlie pute poofpoof pothoo. You say his name.
I can't even recognize this. Ohwell, I haven't heard it. I
haven't listened to it, but yeahit is, and you'll you'll recognize at
(15:16):
the moment you hear it. Ithink I don't. I don't have a
clip of it here, but yeah, you'll recognize it immediately. It was
kind of everywhere. Okay. Butwith that said, let's get into our
episode. Here. We've got basicallytwo episodes, uh in one in this
I would say, right, you'vegot the everything that happens leading up to
the kind of disappearance of Ava,the arrest of Boyd, Raylan going to
(15:39):
Miami. So you have all ofthat, and then you have everything that
happens four years later, and andwill kind of break it into two parts
there. But but first we've gotto apprehend Ava and Boyd and Markham and
get the money back. And uh, where we left off, Raylan was
taken into custom by a state trooper. We get a little scene with the
(16:03):
state trooper and Raylan, which isgreat because it's very parallel to to the
conversations Raylan's had with his fugitives. And you think back to like season season
one and Hunter Mosley, you know, like the conversation that he's having with
Raylan from the back seat about beinga law man and doing what he needed
to do, and Raylan saying,I don't care you tarnished your badge or
(16:25):
whatever. This state trooper is justgiving Raylan back exactly what he's given every
fugitive he's ever apprehended over his career, and he cannot take it. It
was almost like it's not like quitebizarro, but it's just like the mirror
of railing that really does it's greatto hold that mirror up to him and
(16:48):
see, oh boy, it's notso nice being on the other end of
this. But also at the sametime, it doesn't change his behavior because
what do we see in City PrimevalHe does the exact same thing, so
he doesn't learn any lessons, justlike everybody else he's and that trooper is
even more straightly like a square jaw. I don't know, he's just what.
(17:11):
He just didn't have the hat,the stats. That's exactly such a
uniform guy, right, he's likeby the book and all that other stuff.
Yeah, I like that. Nono tolerance for a crooked cop.
So yeah, yeah, So Boydall right, So Railan's being taken off
to to await his transfer to theMarshall Service or the FBI, actually is
(17:34):
what he's what he's waiting for.Yeah, and uh and Boyd at the
same time is searching for the moneyup at Groubs's place. Uh, we
know Ava took off. You know, if we remember at the end of
the last the last episode there,uh you know, uh, Zacharia blew
himself up trying to get Boyd.Boyd managed to escape that and I was
(17:55):
looking for the money. He's veryfrustrated. But then he finds a shovel
with fresh dirt on it anything,So they buried the money. So he
goes to dig it up and uhhe finds groups, which is hilarious.
Somehow he actually looks like he agedmore. Yes, yeah, yeah from
the Yeah, I guess the Iguess that burial process really accelerates decomposition.
(18:23):
Or maybe he just missed hit ushit a soft spot with the shovel or
something. But yeah, uh.And Ava, who had escaped on foot
and got taken into custody with bythe by the crooked Harlan cops. She's
now at the barn and we've gotMarkham there, We've got Loretta there,
(18:45):
we've got Boon there, and Markhamis very interested to learn where his money
is. And I have a shortclip of that. You remember the first
day I laid us on, Youtold you that for a woman to survive
and this one, she had tobe tougher than the men. Tell any
woman who killed her husband and putsa bullet in her new feet, humpseife.
(19:12):
My compliments on your grip. I'dsay you had a bright future,
assuming you have a future. Ora man boy had stole my money and
you stole it from him, Wellyou just gonna give it back to me.
(19:41):
Hits up the mountain. Little cabinthere belongs to a fellow called Grooves.
It's buried on his property. Thatmountain's crawling with federals. How'd you
get the money up there? Idragged it on a sled all by it.
Don't I'm going to ask you justone time, Eva who helped you?
(20:18):
But he didn't have any part inthe tiking. He just didn't want
to see me, Dad, Joe, Uncle's still up there. So we
get the impression there from Markham atthe beginning of that interaction, right that,
hey, you know, tell mewhere the money is. You will
potentially have a future. Just youknow, I know you didn't steal the
money. I know Boyd did,and then you stole it from him,
(20:41):
which you know, Look, thattakes a lot of balls to do that.
I kind of appreciate that, butnow you've got to give me the
money back. That's sort of theit's sort of an affable sort of exchange.
And then as some of the detailsstart to come out, he gets
more and more serious. We findout Zachariah helped. She asks him,
you know, not to hurt himbecause he didn't have any part in the
(21:03):
taking. It doesn't matter. Theythey are going to UH find Zachariah,
find that money and uh and they'regonna kill everybody that's involved. It becomes
pretty clear at that point in thein the discussions that that nobody's leaving that
alive, even if he gets hismoney back. So, yeah, you
(21:26):
know, Tim and Tim and Rachelare in the woods. They find the
gator tooth necklace. They that comesover the radio. Raylan asks the state
trooper to take action regarding the necklace, who then threatens to put him in
the trunk. They get to thecop shop and arts there waiting for him.
Takes takes Raylan into his custody andthey start to head back to Lexington.
(21:53):
But in the meantime, Markham wantsEva to call Zacharayah and UH and
make arrangements for his money to bereturned. To him, and and so
Ava does just that, except youknow, the viewers at home, we
know Zacharia is dead and the personwho answers the phone is none other than
(22:18):
Boyd Crowder, who is fresh fromfinding groups as corpse in a in a
shallow grave. So let's uh,let's listen to a quick clip of that.
Here, Uncle Zakhara, Uncle Zachariah, he can't get to the phone
right now. Thank god, you'reokay. I was worried boy might have
(22:41):
gotten to you put a bullet andknee he did, but believe me,
it was meant for you. UncleZacharai got some bad knees. Mister Markham
has hold of me at the OldBen at John Shad. He doesn't get
his money back. He's gonna killme. Tell me why I should give
(23:04):
a shit. I told him,you and me the only two living souls
know where that money is hid.Without one of us alive, nobody will
ever find it. That's the onlyreason I hung up yet. So you
on your way, an arm man, meet me Accompass Rock, two miles
(23:32):
east of the trail here. Sothey make arrangements to meet Zachariah or who
they think is Zachariah at Compass Rock, they send Boone. Boone takes Loretto
with him because Loretta knows her wayaround the hollers. And and and we
hear Markham order Boone to get themoney and then kill Zachariah. So it
(23:55):
becomes very very clear that there's nointention of anyone leaving this alive. This
situation, all the punishment for stealingMarkham's money is death period, plus his
fiance's dad. He's got nothing tolose at this point, so it's time
to time to wrap up all ofhis unfinished business. I would say.
(24:17):
So they set this up, hedoes get a little he gets a little
unhinged, right. He probably ifCatherine hadn't gotten killed, he probably would
have like let it go, youknow what I mean, Like, yeah,
yeah, I think he would have. I think he would have,
you know, he would have gonea little bit harder, or he would
have gone hard a little bit,but not as much. I think you're
absolutely right. I think if Catherine, this is sort of a revenge mission
(24:40):
for him. Now yeah, okay, everything you love not quite Man on
Fire style, But so you know, Art and Raylan are driving back to
Lexington. Raylan manages to you know, sweet talk Art into cutting him loose
(25:02):
because Art knows it's the right thingto do. Art's all frustrated and pissed,
and Raylan looks like the catue eightthe Canary. He's so proud of
himself for talking himself out of thecuffs. It's so funny. But then
they realize, well, shit,we have to split up because the marshals
have found Groups's Shack and Boyd. There's a firefight. They exchange gunfire,
(25:25):
and then Boyd, being also inhis very much you know, I got
to do anything I can to escapethis mode, starts throwing litsticks of dynamite
at their pursuit. So he's lightingdynamite tossing it and it's you know,
blowing up and creating craters where themarshals and the cops are pursuing him.
(25:48):
It's a it's completely unhinged. Imean, it's it's wild and you wonder,
like why they didn't call it anairstrike or something at that point,
like can we get a can weget a freaking Blackhawk up here or something?
Well, they could have. Theyhad the thermals and stuff. They
(26:08):
they should have had it misely.I guess, you know, maybe the
out is that he really or notreally, but Boyd knows the the train
really well, but not really rightright, No, he doesn't. He
doesn't. He be talked about howhe doesn't really know those those trails are
amazed and he doesn't really know thatarea. We've heard about it when when
he was looking to hide ty Walker. We've heard about it, you know,
(26:33):
in prior seasons also, So yeah, it's it's a little weird.
And and he does get away, right, and so Art, you know,
Art says he's got to get upthere before it turns into Ruby Ridge,
which arguably it already has. Howmany bodies did they have up there
now at this place, Uncle Zacharyer, there's three up there? Yeah yeah,
(26:57):
yeah, so yeah, I thinkyou're right, probably already turned into
rich Yeah. And then and thenArt and Rayl and they go to a
cop bar because they want to findout where Ava is because they know that
the cops took Ava to Markham andthey want to know where Markham was.
They find Deputy Styles, who's theguy who got pistol whipped by Carl,
(27:18):
and they use a baseball bat onthe bar to rattle his concussion to to
basically get him to give up whereMarkham is. You know, when I
was watching this cop bar, Ithought the one thing I thought about this
is why haven't we seen this barbefore now? Because I think it would
have been a cool sort of recurringthing to have that that cop bar with
(27:42):
that guy behind the bar who's sortof hostile to anybody who's not a local,
and a bunch of local cops youknow, some of them scumbags,
some of them not, you know, hanging out in the bar. I
think that's a cool that's a coollittle thing to add to the story.
And I wish we would have seenit before now. Yeah, yeah,
he's like disarming all these these cops. You have to hang up your guns
(28:06):
or what is that? I can'teven think of the name. With that
Star Wars bar that everybody talks about, the canteena bar, that's all I
know at that Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's all the sort
of low life, a wretched humof or a wretched hive of scum and
(28:26):
villainy, I think is what theywhat what obi Wan calls it? And
I don't know. I'm not evena Star Wars guy, and I know
that, I think, so Iwish I could get well, that's a
that's a whole other thing. Rights, but but yeah, it's all I
always like that the idea. Andit's kind of like an Elmore Leonard dig
(28:47):
right where all the stumbags very much. So yeah, there's always a place
where the scumbags go to hang outtogether. Yeah. Yeah, so all
right, well Mark Markham gets thenews that Zachariah well so, so Art
and Raylan split up. At thatpoint, Art goes off to prevent the
Ruby Ridge and Raylan goes to theshed where where Markham is and he and
(29:12):
he tells Rayl and he says, hey, look, no matter what you
see there, no matter what they'vedone to Loretta or Ava or any of
that, you've got to control yourself. You're a law enforcement officer. Basically,
he gives him a preemptive lecture onnot just killing people. So we'll
(29:33):
see if it sinks in. Butbut Markham gets the news that Zachariah is
not there with his money, andthat's where, you know, as you
kind of point out, he startsto get really unhinged, and he he
pulls a pistol on Ava tries tointimidate her to find out what's really going
on. But but before he cantake any action, Boyd has managed to
(29:53):
escape the local law enforcement and themarshals and made it to the Bennett Drying
shed. He's got one of thecorrupt Harlan cops hostage. They shoot it
out and Boyd of course gets thebetter of everybody, including Markham, who
gets it in the eye and hedies. All the crooked cops are dead
(30:17):
and the only one left alive isAva. But before we get to what
happens next, because we've got seenhere with Raylan and Ava and Boyd.
Before we get to that, weof course have to honor our good friend
Avery Markham, who just got shotin the eye and is now dead,
So we of course have our riptribute matterboy to see you in my place
(30:51):
of business again, I'll kill you, I know. For a woman to
survive in this line of work,he's got to be harder than the men,
ready to do the things they won't. He's still American last time I
checked, flavor boat well that Ican still see still get a driver's license
(31:11):
even both eyes maybe. Wow,How weird is it that he got hit
shot in the eye after talking aboutputting a guy's eye out earlier in the
season. Weird that it comes fullcircle like that. I don't think he's
(31:33):
going to get a driver's license anytimesoon. Well he when he when he
had that bullet in the eye, like at the end, he looked worse
than Grooves after being buried. Hasbeen dead for god knows how long.
Mark them, Mark them just looksworse. Yeah, somehow he ended up
(31:57):
like worse. It's the lack ofa mustache on Sam Elliott. It's just
very disconcerting. That's what thriller itreally is. You had mentioned that before,
like in the very beginning when heintroduced him. Yeah, looks like
a turtle. He's got that lipthat like comes down in the front on
top. You know, it's weird. But yeah, So I like I
(32:19):
like David Markham. I thought he'sa good villain. I thought I thought
he I thought Sam Elliott performed therole very admirably. I wish it was
I wish his villain role was alittle bit more robust. I wish it
was a little bit better written. But but but by and large, I
thought he was a great villain. What'd you think, yeah, I think
that he because like one of thethings that they do well here is that
(32:45):
they don't as far as like theevery season villain is like like Max Bennett's
like almost well, she's obviously abetter villain for the for the series,
but you know you can at leastunderstand where she's coming from, you know,
like she makes some of these argumentsthat that I like that. I
like, you know, like youknow, like this whatever the situation is,
(33:05):
like you had to adapt this.I don't know, it's he does
a good job, but you're right, he's not as well well fleshed out
as a same Bags or or evenBoyd. But Boyd, I guess it
would be really not I mean heand he's been there for all six seasons
or whatever. Yeah, a lotmore time to kind of flesh out Boyd.
(33:25):
But I do I do when youcompare like mark him to Quarrels or
mark him to Bennett Mag's Ben,or you know, it's not quite as
sort of robust of a of acharacter as as it could have been.
I think, you know, hehad a lot of henchmen, and they
spent some time developing the henchmen whodidn't make it beyond a few episodes.
(33:45):
So yeah, I've seen a littlebit more mark him, a little bit
less henchman. Yeah, but itdefinitely better than no on'son's face. The
crew, Oh yeah, well, way better than Yeah we're feeling ever so
(34:06):
all right, So Markham's dead, all the cops are all the crooked cops
are dead, all the henchmen aredead, except for a boone who's out
with Loretta looking for Ava or I'msorry, looking for Boyd. Eva goes
for a gun. Boyd stops herAND's about ready to pull the trigger,
but his gun's out of bullets, and Raylan shows up, and it's time
(34:30):
for a final conversation, and youknow, we've got We've got a few
things going on here, right. We've got Boyd who wants to get to
find out from Ava where the moneyis and also would very much like to
kill her for shooting him and stealingthe money. We've got Raylan who wants
to kill Boyd or ultimately wants Boydjust to be dead. He doesn't really
(34:52):
care if he's the one who killshim or not, although I would argue
that he definitely has a preference inthat regard, and and we've got Ava,
who is you know, constantly scanningfor a way to escape the situation
that she finds herself in. Andwe have the final, the final conversation
between the three of them. Goddamn, running your time in sucks. So
(35:15):
I've been told i'd ask you numberfor a couple star if it's Raylan.
But I don't think you're any betterthis than I am. I don't suppose
that's your blood on you there.I please you, somebody show up do
your dirty work for you. Ohboy, I don't care how gets done,
(35:37):
as long as it gets done well. I guess in that case,
you ought to pick up where weleft off in the woods, rightling,
There is another way? What's thatI pull you put me down? Either
way, I am gonna put youdown well right. And here's the problem.
(36:01):
See, I don't have any morebullets in my gun. Try that
one, Ava, that would bea good time to get out of the
(36:22):
way. Rather than you mind ifI ask Ale a question before we do
this, like yourself up, whywe had the money, you were home
free, honestly born. I putmyself in your shoes and did what I
(36:45):
thought you would do. I ain'tdoing it right now here you are nobody.
Ain't you were gonna raise that gunand we are gonna end this rightly,
you stay out of this. Iain't gonna ho along you rat,
So you go and do whatever itis you're meant to do. Of course,
(37:07):
someday I am looking out and whenI do it, I'm gonna kill
a Roman and I'm gonna call himand I'm gonna kill you. So what's
he gonna be ryen? Yeh,You've got this moment where Boyd is you
(37:30):
know, he's decided, he's he'sgiven up, right, He's not he's
not gonna raise his gun. He'snot gonna try and shoot it Raylan.
But at the same time, hedoesn't want to be taken into custody.
He wants Raylan to go to thedark side, basically strike me down exactly.
(37:50):
And uh. And you know you'vegot this, this this situation where
Ava is a witness to all ofthis, right and you you you expect
that Raylan's not going to kill Ava, and so he's got a hopefully he's
thinking about like you know, okay, wait, if if Ava lives to
tell the story of what's happening here, I'm gonna go to jail because this
(38:12):
is straight up murder. I'm notallowed to just murder people. So there's
a little bit of that. Hetries to suicide by Raylan. He tells
him, you know, I'm gonnaget out, and when I do,
I'm gonna kill her, and thenI'm gonna come and I'm gonna kill you.
The only thing he doesn't say islike he's gonna and then your baby
daughter and all that. Ye,so, but you know, look,
(38:35):
Raylan does the right thing, takeshim into custody. That's the next thing
we see is Boyd being let outin handcuffs, much to his chagrin,
and Ava also in the in theback of a car in cuffs, and
Tim and Rachel and Art and everybodyare there, and it turns out they
(38:57):
couldn't find Boone and Loretta. Theydon't know where the money is, but
they've got Boyd and Ava and custody. So so Tim and Rachel take Boyd
back to Lexington, Art takes themillion that Ava had on her in the
backpack, and Raylan takes Ava backto Lexington with him, which, again,
I mean, how ridiculous is this. It's like widely suspected that he
(39:22):
collaborated with her to get to keVBoyd's shot and escape with ten million dollars.
And then they're like, oh,yeah, we'll just let you drive
her back to Lexington by yourself. If Basquez was in this episode, his
head would explode, That's gonna say, furiously calling Art saying don't you dare
(39:45):
let Raylan drive Ava back or whatever? It does seem somewhat irresponsible, even
if you're relatively sure he wasn't youknow, he wasn't involved. It's like,
this does seem somewhat irresponsible. Shouldhonestly, given this this woman's propensity
forget thing away, they should probablytake her in like the the Bain plane
back to she's only tied up likeHannibal lector exactly though, what is it
(40:15):
not a girdy but like the paththe Box character, Yeah, yeah,
it's a dolly. Yeah it's likea like Appliants dollie, but yeah,
I hate his brain with some beansor what it's canty. So yeah,
(40:40):
so now we have the whole Batmanslash joker thing right like Raley cow exactly
edit it all, but nope,no, you did it the right way
rail it. But hey, youknow, if you only knew, if
you only knew what the future holdsyou, what have made different choice?
(41:00):
Yeah, yeah, and so sotwenty three minutes, so, she tries
to make a deal with Raylan forthe money. She's like, hey,
I know where the rest of themoney is. You gotta let me go.
And he's like, look, there'sno outs. This is over.
You're done. You're you're going away. And at a minimum, she's going
away for you know, shooting Boyd, stealing the money and all of that.
(41:21):
I mean, there's still some questionas to whether or not her her
quote unquote crimes of the past areeven prosecutable at this point, but she's
committed a whole variety of new onesthat she probably is going to go into
custody for. So yeah, andBoyd as well, boy he's got well
(41:43):
he has mark him on his uhhis tally sheet. At least he's got
mark them all those cops. He'sgot Zachariyah, he's got Carl, Carl,
Carl Man, Carl, Jimmy Carl. So you got to figure,
yeah, Boyd's going away for areal, real long time. That's that's
a lot of murders and plus youknow, plus the whatever hundred one hundred
(42:07):
or so counts of attempted murder thathe's probably gonna be charged with for throwing
dynamite at law enforcement office. Yeahright, yeah, that's uh. There's
a Donkey Kong where the guy hasthe fire barrels. Yes, yeah,
I mean boyds. If we wereto tally up his his indictment, I'm
(42:29):
guessing that he's looking at a couplehundred years just for what they got him
on since his escape from custody. We're not even talking about anything prior to
that. It's just sense his escapefrom custody. It's probably a couple hundred
years. So he's going away forever. And and then twenty three minutes,
(42:50):
twenty three minutes into the finale, you know you got you got rail and
driving away, everything seemingly wrapped up, and so all of a sudden,
you hear the strains of your netyou'll never leave Harlow and Alive come through,
and you're like, oh, what'sgonna happen. Turns out it's Boone
that's gonna happen. Boone's been followingthem. He spotted them at the drying
shed. Before they left, andand he stops him, He runs them
(43:14):
off the road. There's a littlefinal show down there where he tells him,
hey, look, I couldn't Icouldn't just have let you go without
saying goodbye. And and Raylan isready for the showdown. They they show
it down right there, like highnoon style, right in the middle,
in the middle of the street, you know, very old West, And
(43:35):
and they show it down. Theyshoot Raylan hits center mass. But but
we also see a flash of bloodcome from Raylan's head. And and Raylan's
on the ground and his hat's gota hole in it, and Boone attempts
to uh to grab his gun andshoot to hopefully finish the job if it's
not already finished, but Loretta stopshim and and and he dies there,
(44:00):
bleeds out on the on the street. And we find out that Raylan took
a graze to the head. Soso he took a glancing blow. Looks
like it went off the skull anduh in in the hat, off the
skull of his forehead and then outthrough the back of the hat. So
he's incredibly lucky, I would say. And it's ruined his hat though.
(44:24):
That's for certain. He's you're notgonna be able to fix that. R.
That's right, that's right, R. I P. That's Stetson.
So now I have a question foryou about that. Stetson. Uh we'll
get to here when we wrap upsort of, Raylan's goodbye to the people
in the Marshall's office because I haveI have a very important question about that.
(44:45):
We'll get to that. But whilehe's trying to figure out what So,
he's dazed. He's on the ground, right, he took a gunshot
wound to the head. He felldown and probably hit his head when he
fell down, and so, uhso it's it's unclear, you know,
he's he's still trying to figure outwhat's happened. He's a little disoriented.
Uh. Eva, who's handcuffed inhis town car, uh steals it and
(45:07):
speeds away. She's as slippery asan eel, that one. It's like
Wiley coyote, right, No prisoncan hold me, like like George Clooney's
(45:29):
character, and out of sight right, that's that's right. Well, she
didn't have to climb out of likea show tube suage tube. Right.
But she speeds away and we findout a couple of days later, Raylan
(45:49):
pays a final visit to the officebefore he heads out to Miami, and
we find out that she's still onthe run. We don't know where.
The expectation is she's not going toget very far, but but they're not
sure if she has the money ornot, so they think she might get
a little bit further. And weget a goodbye scene with Art. They
drink a little bourbon together. Arttells them, you know, hey,
(46:12):
look, I told you when youwere going to come up when you when
I asked you to come up herehelp me get Boyd Crowder, and you
did. You got him, andyou got him right, and it was
justified. And then and then youhave a goodbye with Tim Where where Tim?
You know? Acknowledges that Raylan hasn'tbeen the best desk partner, but
(46:34):
also says that he just hopes thenew guy can keep up, whoever it
is, and Raylan gives him acopy of of a well worn copy of
the Friends of Eddie Coyle as aparting gift. We've talked about this book
before on the show. Certain plotelements have been directly lifted from the book.
What I Didn't Know and I don'tthink we mentioned this before. That's
Elmore Leonard's all time favorite book actually, so it's a He credits that book
(47:00):
with his decision to change from writingwestern novel western western stories because he wrote
dime store western novels primarily early inhis career, and he changed after reading
The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Hewent he started to write crime novels.
And that's how we ended up withUH, with Justified and out of Sight
and Karen Cisco and Raylan Gibbons andand all these characters. So the very
(47:23):
inspirational book and a nice little nodto to the creator there as well of
the universe. So and then andthen on his way out, he passes
Rachel, who barely gets a goodbye, which is kind of a bummer,
I thought, but comments on hisnew hat and he's wearing Boone's hat now
(47:45):
and and he says, you know, tried it on and it fit,
just like he had said before. Now, the question I have for you
is did Raylan get his original stetsonoff a duty shot, because that's what
he says about his original stats intoo, like, Hey, I tried
it on and it fit. Didhe pick up did he pick it up
from a dude that he killed anduh and put that hat on it it
(48:06):
fit? Yeah, I don't know. That's a good question. That's an
interesting little mythology, isn't it.It's like, oh, that would be
that would be something else. Iwould like to, you know, give
me a prequel that shows how thereany reference to it is because you read
I don't know if you read allof the books or that he's in,
but I wonder if there is inthere. There's no reference to it in
the books. Now interesting, Okay, So anyway, so from there,
(48:32):
I was going to say that, like I wonder, remember we were talking
about like Rachel tried on his hatone time, and yeah, like I
wonder, how how dirty with thathat would you know? Like because it's
yeah, is there hat maintenance thatyou have to have? Because that it
still looks pretty clean? Right?Yeah? Because yeah, yeah, even
with the hole in it, it'slike very clean. Like you have to
(48:54):
imagine that inside band would just beblack, Like just you lay it down
on a piece of paper, It'slike you left French fries there. That's
exactly right, Yep, that's exactlyright. My monitor just went out it's
back. Okay, good. Ikicked something under my desk and my monitor
(49:16):
went out, and I'm like,oh no, that's all my notes,
but it's so yeah, so Iwonder, you know, like that,
And then I guess he could havehad another one made, but those are
expensive, those that could be Ohyeah, it could be several hundred dollars
for a for a new one.Yeah. Yeah, Well what did you
(49:39):
think of the goodbyes? What doyou I mean, because this is the
last we see Art, this isthe last we see Tim, this is
the last we see Rachel. Ithought Tim had the best of the three.
Uh yeah, Arts was fine,it was okay, but I think
Rachel really got short changed. Yeah, and Nelson he was on brand,
true. I forgot the Nelson piecetoo. Yeah he's there too. Yeah,
(50:02):
yeah, I thought it was okay. Yeah, I mean it's I
don't think, you know, likeyou can't really draw out something like that,
right, that doesn't seem like Raylanor his personality or or any of
the other people that are off reallytrue, like oh, they weren't friends.
(50:22):
They were they were very much coworkersand not friends. That's absolutely true.
Yeah yeah, who all right,Well then we uh, and then
we get into the what what Iconsider to be sort of the second episode
of this episode, which is,we got a flash on the screen that
says four years later, and sowe we fast forward four years. We've
(50:42):
got Raylan. He's down in Miami. He's still wearing the boone hat.
We see him with his daughter, who's now roughly like five years old,
and she's at the playground. Heseems like a pretty good dad. Winona
and Raylan have a great parenting relationship, like she's with this other dude,
but like they they get along.Their parenting are well, they're scheduling,
(51:06):
well, everything's it's it's very adultfor those two. Yeah, so it's
it's pretty impressive to see that theyhave this really good relationship. Oh,
we do have we do have aof course, our word of the week,
you use your tongue prettier in atwenty dollars, which is punk this
(51:29):
week because that's what Winona's husband boyfriend, whoever calls uh calls will A,
calls her punk, which is whichWinona says is short for punkin, and
Raylan says, Hey, you knowwhat I deal with all day? I
run into punks all the time, and so let's talk about what that definition
(51:50):
of punk means. Punk noun.A worthless person is the Dictionary definition of
punk, and then friends often usedas a general term of abuse. So
so that's what Raylan hears. Whatwhat Willa hears? This punkin and not
the only punkin reference we're gonna getin this episode actually, But but yeah,
(52:14):
you know, look, Raylan's agood dad and they have a good
co parenting relationship. He's he's partneredup with I forget the actor's name there
in Miami, but the guy whoplayed Champ Kind on an Anchorman Whammy.
But but yeah, he's partnered upwith him and working well in the wearing
(52:37):
a Miami Marlins T shirt in thein the Miami office, just in case
we weren't sure where it was takingplace, finds a note on his desk
from Rachel Brooks, who happens tobe the new chief of the Seattle office.
And in that envelope there's a newspaperclipping that has a photo of Ava
(52:58):
in it, and it turns outshe's in Lebec, California, which is
what I bear country from between lA and Bakersfield. So that's up where
you near near where you grew up, right, yep, yep. Well
it's uh, well I was furthernorth, like in the area, but
it's like just in the mountains goingthrough what's it called like when you're trying
(53:22):
to get to Bakersfield. So likeyou yeah, so you know, inland
from Solvang and Moslivos. If youguys know wine southern California Wine country or
the Sideways at all, if yousaw Sideways, it's inland from from where
Sideways takes place. Yeah, it'svery It looks exactly like southern California,
(53:43):
the mountains and stuff. It's veryuh yeah, And for once we're authentically
shooting where something is taking place.I mean they use the same background to
pretend it's Kentucky. Yeah, exactly. Well that's the way southern California.
Look. My note here says thefirst time California geography has made sense for
(54:07):
the show. You imagine them tryingto paint a blue grass like in in
l A or something. Oh,somebody like I don't know who would,
who would? David Lynch out therelike it's gotta be bluer, we need
(54:28):
a bluer and then it's just likefucking I'm gonna shoot it in black and
white anyway. But yeah, soso uh. He finds Ava on a
ranch there in Labec, California. He knocks on the door and she opens
it, and she's standing there. She's got her hand on her on a
shotgun or a rifle, and heshe suggests that they go for a walk
(54:52):
and talk. And they do gofor a walk and talk. And there's
a few things that happen in thisconversation. But I I have a clip
of a little bit of the conversationabout how Raylan found her. How did
you find me? Junior deputy inthe Seattle office scaring local newspapers west of
(55:14):
the company divide, saw someone look, maybe could be you in the background
of a newspaper picture about a pumpkin. Pitch should have gone there. Pumpkins
were expensive heaven for California. Theone I bought had wrought they making ends
meet, cutting hair. I thoughtyou'd be looking for that. So no,
(55:38):
I haven't held scissors and a combin my hands since I left our
Connie, the lady that owns aparcel, she uses horses to work with
special needs kids. I helped withthat, mostly hand out helmets do some
sidewalking. I look after the bighouse, mucking feed when she's not around,
(55:58):
and I work at the school intown. And I also I volunteered.
You're trying to taking you in?Or are you shooting straight for sainthood?
You're gonna take me in? Youran on me eva three times once
at gunpoint. It's like you findme here running hoes or robbing bikes every
(56:20):
long time fugitive i've ever run downexpects me to congratulate them for not doing
what no one's supposed to be doing. Anyhow, I do love that.
Look, I've lived such a goodlife since I escaped your custody. Surely
you aren't going to take me in. Look, I'm rehabilitated. There's nothing
you can do to me. Idon't need punishment anymore. I've rehabilitated myself.
(56:47):
So after that little bit of ohsorry, go ahead, I was
gonna say, you know, likeat when we first started doing this,
I came up with that corollary ofthe ever crowder good colia, and it
actually holds through all the way tothe end, all the way to the
end, hair down, watch out, yeah, watch out? And did
(57:12):
they even show the shot and like, I really just assumed that she had
one behind the door. Yeah, okay, And when he calls her out
on it, she moves her handbecause it's it's clear that that's absolutely what
she had, which, by theway, is the proper response to any
time you have to answer the door. Well, yeah, the only thing
she did wrong was open it exactly. But yeah, so there you go.
(57:37):
I established a new whatever you wantto call it, hair threat theory,
coralor yes, yes, yes,I love her her Good Fellaw's moment
here because you know, at theend of Goodfellas, you get the I
ordered, you know, spaghetti withmarin arrow when I first got here,
and I got egg noodles and ketchup. She's like, the pumpkin was expensive
(58:00):
and it had rots. Her eggnoodles and ketchup moment. As she's living
in witness protection essentially in southern California, she should have asked for the avocado,
that's right, or almonds or almonds. So eventually, you know,
(58:23):
she after that conversation, she thensays, Hey, I want to show
you something, and she takes himto a shed on the property where apparently
she's chained up a small child whois a chubby little kid that apparently belongs
to her, and Rayland says whatI think is one of the stupidest lines
(58:44):
in the entire series, where hegoes, of course we were looking for
a woman, not a pregnant woman. It's like, of course you were.
Yeah, everybody's facial appearance and hairappearance and everything else changes when they
(59:07):
get pregnant. We all know that. Yeah, he should have said,
oh is he mine? No?No, no. The kid came out
with a collar buttoned up to hischin, so you could know exactly whose
child he was with. A hehe just didn't have the watch on a
(59:30):
chain. That was the only thing. He's with, a button ump shirt
and a black vest and his hairis just like crazy. In that shed,
there's like a bar coal minor pictureson the wall. So that's Boyd's
(59:53):
kid. It's Zachariah. Is ishis name? And and Raylan makes a
fat joke about a four year oldchild when he says, well, I
see you're feeding him. Well.So there's a couple of very interesting sort
(01:00:15):
of moments in this exchange, butat the end of it all, he
promises he's not going to take herin and ultimately we get a referral back
to the title of the episode,The Promise. The title of the episode
is derived from the promise that hemade to Ava early in season six,
where he told her he wasn't gonnalet anything bad happen to her. And
(01:00:36):
what was her response, There's aspecial place in hell for a man who
breaks a promise to a woman orsomething like that. Yeah, and this
is the promise, and so he'snot going to let anything happen to her.
And she says, well, it'snot just you that I'm worried about.
And because our good friend Boyd Crowderis still alive. He's in custody,
but he's still alive. And she'sworried about him because now she's got
(01:00:59):
a kid that he might be interestedin, or you know, marginally interested
in, more even more reason totry and track her down. And so
Raylan, Uh, Raylan pays boyto visit, and we get this clip
of Boyd. He's, uh,he's back at preaching, and he's telling
his tale about driving a truck fullof dead men and a car full of
(01:01:20):
heroin through the Mexican desert and uh, he's being just as Boyd Crowder absurd
as ever, and it sounds like, you know, based on the way
that he tells the story, itsounds like he, uh, he's been
telling this story for a while, for four years, and everybody's heard it
before, but they love seeing himperform. And he does this this climb
(01:01:40):
the ladder thing. I'm climbing theladder. I'm coming. It's it's very,
very, very funny. And hegets interrupted because he's got a visitor
and uh, it's not visiting dayOfficer Craiger. But I don't know,
that line just sticks in my headfor some reason when he although Sir Craiger.
I don't know why, just theway he delivers that line. It's
(01:02:02):
always sort of stuck with me.But but uh, you know, Raylan
arrives for a visit and they sitthere and they have a little chat and
Raylan explains to him that, hey, Ava's dead. And here's how we
know. We found a body matchedthe DNA on it. We found the
idea that she was using belonged tothis person. This person called us and
told us about it. Turns outit happened a couple of years ago.
(01:02:23):
We didn't know. We thought wehad got her, or we thought we
were getting close to getting her.She was probably on the run, probably
fell asleep at the wheel and diedin a solo car crash. And you
know, gives them, gives themall of the receipts, right. He
he has the death certificate, hehas a newspaper article. He's got all
this stuff to kind of back upthe claim that that Ava's dead. And
(01:02:49):
eventually Boyd comes around to accepting thatthat Ava's dead, and uh, and
then they have a little conversation,uh, you know, just about the
person lives and how things are goingand uh. And then Boyd h Boyd
asked Raylan a question and he says, hey, look, why is it
that you came here to tell methis? And and you know, look,
(01:03:15):
everyone knew that we were going tohave a clip of this before we
even started this episode. When youlisten to when you listen to Fire in
the Hole, you knew that wewere going to do the last two minutes
of this this episode as a clip. There's no doubt in anyone's mind that
was going to happen, So wemight as well just get to it.
Okay, Okay, there, maybehe's for the best for who, Well,
(01:03:46):
she was trying to get out.But I just don't think that's possible,
follows you dond somehow right? Yeah, sometimes I think the only way
to get out of our town andlive ast have never been born there.
Instead of course there's you. Nowit's life in Florida pretty much his advertised.
(01:04:15):
He wouldn't like it, though alot of Jews bratherlant gibbings if I
didn't know. But I think you'retrying to provoke me. Now you know
Jesus Christ was a Jew. I'veheard. Now I feel excuse me,
I have to look for a reasonto get off the phone. Can I
(01:04:36):
ask you one question before you go? As long as you understand if it
annoys me, I'm just gonna hangout Scouts, Honor Tramble Penitentiary is a
long way from Miami Rana. Now, you could have called to Warden,
(01:05:00):
could have sent worth them. Iallow you ask him why I came.
I thought it was news that shouldbe delivered in person, to tell him
the reason after all these long yearsrolling kimons, that's the only reason.
(01:05:21):
H and I suppose if I nowmyself to be sentimental despite all that has
occurred, there is one thing Iwandered back to we dug cold together.
(01:05:44):
That's right, They dug cold together, and they dug together. Yeah,
exactly, and so h so Raylandfelt compelled to visit Boyd and tell him
in person. And and you wonder, you know, you see that,
and you know, on the surface, you think about that scene and you
think about that moment and you're like, oh, that's you know, that's
really cool sort of moment. Right, they there's a connection between these two
(01:06:11):
men that transcends their antagonistic relationship. And then you scratch the surface a little
bit on that you think to yourself, will wait a minute. The only
reason Raylan went there is because hemade a commitment to Ava that he was
going to make sure Boyd knew thatAva was dead and that he was never
going to be a threat to heragain. That's the only reason he went.
(01:06:31):
And he knew he was the onlyperson capable of doing that, that
Boyd wasn't going to believe it ifhe heard it from the warden or if
you heard it from a news reportor something else, like he would think,
okay, well if I still gotaway. And so Raylan comes with
the receipts and gives him this thoroughexplanation of why Ava's gone and not coming
back, and why there's no reasonfor him to ever try and go after
(01:06:54):
her again. And Boyd takes itas you came here because we have this
connection, and really we are prettysure that the reason Raylan is there is
because he's protecting Ava. And soit's it's an interesting sort of dichotomy.
And you think about how lonely Boydhas to be in prison, right He's
(01:07:15):
got nobody left. There is nobody. His entire family's dead, either at
his hand or at someone else's hand. His all of his friends and compatriots,
his his his poet tutors, asthey say, they're all dead and
(01:07:35):
and and that's it. I can'timagine he's gotten a visitor to this point
in prison, right other than hislawyer, Like who else would be visiting
God? For some reason, Ithought that there was like a you know,
like a musical montage at the endof this episode. And I distinctly
remember like when I first saw thislike years ago, where like he is
(01:07:58):
Boyd who actually say during like inthe mind, do you know what I'm
talking about? I do know whatyou're talking about. There is a clip,
and I believe it's at the endof season one. Actually, I
think it's in the episode where whereRaylan and Boyd are holding each other at
gunpoint at the end of season one, and there's a moment where we see
(01:08:21):
them both limping out of the coalmine together like one arm around another,
like somebody definitely dragging somebody else out, and it's implied, it's heavily implied
that that's Boyd dragging Raylan out ofthat mind and we occasionally get a reference
to it, but not anything clearwhere it's like, you know, Boyd
saved my life or anything like that. We don't get that necessarily, but
(01:08:45):
but it's definitely implied. And andso that's that's that's where that comes from
that you're thinking of. I thinkit's not this episode. It was the
season one episode at the end ofthe at the end of season I think
it's the last. Yeah, seasonseason one, episode thirteen. I think
it's a Bulletville. I think iswhere where we get that scene as Raylan
(01:09:08):
sort of pointing the gun at thecar where Board's driving away. I think
that's where that comes in. I'mpretty sure that's what I remember, but
but I absolutely remember that flashback sceneand it's obscured by smoke and they're like,
you know, it's like backlit andthey're like limping out of the mine
or whatever together. Yeah okay, yeah for somebody I was expecting at the
(01:09:29):
end of this episode. Yeah yeah, okay, yeah. I maybe when
it originally aired they had cut thatin or something, but it's definitely not
in the version that I watched thistime around. Yeah yeah, yeah,
And I was like, remember tryingto look for it, and I think
that's not the way I remember itthe series any Yeah, so yeah,
(01:09:50):
yeah, that's the that's the thingwith physical media, right, let me
get out of my soapbox on myhigh horse here for a second. It's
like, that's the thing with thephysical media versus streaming. It's like,
if you if if they did takethat out, if they did change it
in the later versions of that episode, but you had bought the DVD box
set, you'd have the original versionof that episode without that piece being cut
(01:10:13):
out, whereas if you watch iton streaming, you would never even know
that that piece had been cut outof the movie or of the show.
And yeah, and the same thinghappens in movies and other TV shows like
If You Look at you know AlwaysSonny in Philadelphia. Several of the episodes
are not available on streaming because really, yeah, because of the lethal weapon
(01:10:34):
thing where they do blackface. Soso they've taken them off streaming, even
though that's part of the joke, right, the joke is that they're such
a holes that they're doing blackface.Right, it's not something to it's not
portrayed as something good to aspire to. It's portrayed as something an idiot does.
(01:10:57):
But it's still not still not availablestreaming. So I was gonna say
this effect, is it really No? It is kind of really kind of
but not really. Yeah, Ithink that might be that thing might have
died. That that might have diedlike twenty years ago. I remember what
(01:11:17):
that was the thing. Everybody wasall worked up about it. But and
that's that's the end of the episodeand and the end of the series,
and so you know, we getthis ending. Boyd's in jail, Raylan's
happy. Ava is you know, happy on the run, raising her child,
working on this ranch, no fearthat she's going to go to jail.
(01:11:40):
But she can't, you know, she can't live a normal life still
because yeah, Raylan's not going tolook for her. Raylan's not going to
take her in. But the juniordeputy in the Seattle office who stumbled across
that that newspaper clipping might eventually findher, right, So she it's not
like she can go back to livinga normal life. She's she's still got
to be in hiding for the restof her life. So yeah, yeah,
(01:12:03):
I I look, I think it'sa perfect ending. I think it's
I think it's very very very good. And uh, you know I said
this when we watched City Primeval, the the sort of the work that they
did to sort of unravel the ending, uh in City Primeval. While I
was you know, I'm of twominds of it, right, because I
(01:12:25):
was super excited to see it becauseI love, you know, these are
my friends. I love seeing theseguys again and I want to watch more
of them. But at the sametime, it's like, oh man,
you guys, it was so perfect. It was so perfect. You don't
need to go change it. Don'tdon't expand it, don't make it,
don't ruin it. Right, It'syeah, so hard. What's better than
(01:12:47):
say, like the way the SopranHouse ended, you know, like there
was all these questions and stuff. This was like perfect as far as giving
like finality or closure whatever you wantto call it to the to the series
and to open up that can ofwords like you know, I'm like you.
I was excited too. I'm toomine, you know, I want
to see these guys again and everythingelse. But yeah, the way this
(01:13:10):
series end is perfect. It isit is. I think it's a per
I think it's a perfect ending.I think, you know. Yeah,
nothing else to say on that topic. Really, it's just it's just real,
real good and yeah, and I'msad every time I'm sad it's over.
Every single time I'm sad it's over. Boy, let me tell you
I am. I am doubly sadthat it's over this time around. Having
(01:13:33):
done now seventy eight, seventy eightepisodes of this of this podcast to talk
about my favorite show. Yeah, yeah, over the past. What when
we start twenty twenty one so years? No, it was March of twenty
twenty when we started this, soit was it was like two it was
like two three weeks after the Paninistarted. Yeah, okay, okay,
(01:13:56):
god, well that's that. Time'sgone. It's almost four years. It's
nuts. So we'll talk more aboutthat. We'll talk more about kind of
what's what's happened in the last fouryears as we've done this show and sort
of what we've learned from doing it. That's gonna be a special episode that
we'll do here in a few weeks, uh and release that, and then
(01:14:17):
again we'll also talk a little bitmore about our our our plans for the
future. But before we can getto any of that, we have to
do our final segment for the finaltime. Are you going to shoot him
too? Raylan? I was tellingmy friends this morning, now yesterday,
come to me and if you don'tget out of town in twenty four hours,
I'm gonna shoot you one site. Are you gonna shoot him? I'll
(01:14:39):
get four you before you even clearyour weapons, and I'll take more chances
with the other you get the chanceshoot him in the US, I'll pull
my sade ar unless I'm going toshoot to kill. Are you going to
shoot him too? Raylan? Andin this episode, Raylan actually shoots Boone
dead. And it's been a while, actually, I want to say it's
(01:15:00):
been a few episodes that he actuallyhad to shoot in anybody. But but
yeah, he that was that wasthe showdown. It was all high noon
ish. But I guess it wouldit would have been like sun up,
Yeah, I guess sundown. Iguess is what this would have been.
Yeah, because at the end ofa day, I think, right,
(01:15:23):
no, because they've been looking allnight right always with the accuracy. I
know, the time. The timelineis just so so screwing on the show.
It's like it's whatever time was mostphoto giant. Let's say they had
to get that sub position right. They they absolutely nailed it. The shot
(01:15:45):
was amazing, the shot of themin profile, it was really really well
done. Oh yeah, yeah,it's like a total Yeah. I like
a classic showdown and they face offand either high new or not. I
knew either a sunrise or sundown. We'll have to go look at I'll have
to go research that. We'll lookat it, look at the old Farmer's
(01:16:05):
Almanac and figure that one out.Yeah, that's right. And then I
just had a note here actually there'sa like I have final tallies for the
for the series, at least forBoyded, for for Raylan. And that
was courtesy of this article from Ufrom a Rocks. It was your guy.
(01:16:26):
It was wait, your guy isDanger Guerrero. Danger Guerrero now now
known as Brian Grubb. Okay, okay, this is another guy, but
it was over it was Josh KurbOkay, I don't know. I don't
know who that guy is. Butfor at least for the series. Uh,
the tallly is twenty five bodies forRailing, okay, and uh and
(01:16:49):
uh nineteen for Boyd really because yeah, yeah, okay, so I would
have credited Boyd with more. Iwas here just thinking to myself, like
who had more bodies on them bythe end of the series, And I
figured that Boyd's little killing spree atthe end put him over the top.
(01:17:10):
But yeah, it's it's just aninteresting thing because you know, Boyd never
had to do any of the reports, right, yeah, exactly, he
never has, Yeah, the paperworkand self recrimination as rail And it's one
(01:17:31):
of the best things about that,at least I acknowledge it. Right.
I was watching Jack with the newseason of Jack Reacher. Oh yeah,
yeah, it's on Amazon, andman, he's murdering like a bunch of
people, and you just it's justlike, no, it was like,
okay, where are the police. It's crazy. I was talking to a
(01:17:54):
friend of mine at work about itand he's like, oh, yeah,
I've been watching the new season ofJack Reacher. He goes it's actually made
me a little uncomfortable because of theamount of extra judicial killing he's doing.
It's a lot, it really is. And it's not like it's like nameless
faceless like looks like you know, like John Wick is just like a bunch
(01:18:15):
of people come to attacking. It'slike, yeah, it's just like hardcore,
like straight up murdering people that thathave like some significant screen time.
So anyway, that was I've neverseen any of the Jack Reacher stuff,
so it's, uh, well, the first season I enjoyed. Actually I
(01:18:43):
thought the first season was was prettygood. But the second season, as
I I don't know, I could, I could pass on it. That's
exactly what the person I was talkingto at works out about it. Anyway,
that's it for that. So that'sit, guys. That's it for
(01:19:03):
Groundless Justified podcast, or at leastfor our episode coverage. So so hey,
look, a couple of things Iwant to say. First of all,
thank you for listening. Thank youfor putting up with our nonsense through
this, because I know I personallybring a lot of nonsense to the table.
I do things that I think arefunny that probably nobody else does.
(01:19:23):
But you know, look, wedid this podcast for us, more for
any more than for anybody else.So so thank you for listening, thank
you for telling your friends, thankyou for getting us five stars in a
review. I do appreciate that aswell. And look, we've got more
to come. We're not done yet. I've got funny things to say about
other shows and and and I thinkI think we've got we're we've got to
(01:19:48):
beat on something that I think isgoing to be pretty good coming up here.
So so stay tuned. We're goingto be back, like I say,
in about two weeks, roughly twoto three week, we'll be back
to talk a little bit about we'llwrap up Justified, and we'll talk a
little bit about, you know, kind of our favorite moments, who our
favorite characters were, what moments wethought were a little bad. We'll we'll
(01:20:11):
talk about how bad season five wasin comparison to the other five seasons,
and uh, and yeah, we'lltalk a little bit about what we're gonna
do next and so so tune inhere this this same spot in two three
weeks from now, you'll see theepisode. Just hit the subscribe button and
you'll get it when it comes outand uh and and you'll you'll hear what's
(01:20:33):
gonna happen next for us. Soyeah, I think that's about what I
wanted to say to sort of wrapthis up. Anything anything you wanted to
say, Randy, anything about youknow, this episode or about the show
in general. About the podcast,I did have like I don't know,
like we kind of like talked aboutlike doing something with with the dog thing
(01:20:54):
the dog crug. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's funny I wrote.
I wrote, you know, I'ma I'm a traditional broadcast radio guy.
We'll give it a little bit ofcolor here. I'm a traditional broadcast
radio guy. Right, So,like I like double on Tondra and very
silly sort of sort of things thatyou can say on you can get away
with saying on the radio that youwouldn't be able to say on a podcast.
(01:21:15):
Right. You can't use the Fword, you can't make it an
explicit sexual reference or anything like thaton the radio, but you can do
that on a podcast. But Ilike to challenge myself to sometimes right stuff
that is stuff you can say,the stuff that you can say on the
radio that you wouldn't be able tosay on or the stuff that you can
say on the radio that's more doubleon TNDRA sort of thing. And boy,
(01:21:39):
oh boy, the down on Allfours dog grooming or dono al four's
mobile pet grooming service that Win Duffyhas on the side of his truck.
The experts in doggy style just leftme with. I felt like there were
so many opportunities to write something,So I sent Randy a little a couple
(01:21:59):
of things that I had written.I haven't gotten any of this down yet.
I might still do it before weget to our to our wrap up
episode here, because because I thinkthere are some nuggets here. But but
I asked, I said it toRandy, and I said, hey,
do you have anything for this?Yeah? What do you got? Oh?
I just had like a couple ofthe dog puns like you just dog
(01:22:20):
punds, like transitions like oh,I guess we don't have to pause for
you know, the segment, youknow, like and like oh that was
kind of a rough, a roughrough segment or something like stuff like that.
It wasn't anything great all right?Yeah, well that was That was
kind of what I was struggling with, is that I didn't have anything great.
(01:22:42):
I had something like okay, andit needs so much refinement. But
but I do like I'm I'm takingnotes, all right, maybe well,
well, like we'll have inspiration betweennow the next time would record. Yeah,
exactly, a little bit of productionwork for me to for me to
do here, I don't have aton of prep work to do, so
I'll i'll everyone to squeeze that in. So I do like I do like
(01:23:05):
that dog Groomy. The dog Groomythings did come back, and they show
a win in this episode. Yeah, they show Win getting like you know,
the hypothetical or whatever, you know, like how Eva was he able
to get out of Harlan County exactly? Yeah, Yeah, we got flashbacks
with Limehouse and Ellen May and Winand you know, ultimately, I mean
(01:23:27):
the mythology of the show. Ithink the the well accepted opinion is that
Win got the other nine million dollarsto get Ava out of town, and
and he used the dog grooming vanbecause he knew that if it were a
used dog grooming van, the dogsthat were looking for ava, We're not
going to We're going to be distractedby the smell of other dogs in the
(01:23:49):
dog grooming van. So it's areally smart sort of way to smuggle a
person out of town. Yeah,so, so you can imagine what we
possibly have for Down on All Foursdog or for Down on All Fours mobile
groomers. It's yeah, we've gotwe've got some stuff. Well, we'll
(01:24:11):
see if we can put something togetherthat might be funny. A little thirty
second radio ad is what I'm whatI'm thinking of, But all right,
anything else, that was it?That was it? All right? Guys.
Well, hey again, thank youfor listening. Don't forget to tune
in in a couple of weeks toour recap episode and then and then coming
(01:24:33):
soon a new podcast from Groundless andwe'll we'll release the details of that as
well at the time. So inthe meantime, thanks for listening. Don't
forget to tell a friend or familymember about the show, and we'll talk
to you soon.
