Speaker 1 (00:00):
What is go win on Gunfighters Today, we're going to
talk about how the three to zero eight stacks up
against other cartridges, mostly in the realm of survival. That
interest you stick around. Welcome to Gunfighter Life, the podcast
where we talk about guns, gun fighting, tactics, ballistics the
(00:20):
right way, with all Mighty God at the center, Judeo
Christian values and real world firsthand experience. I am blessed
to serve you as host today. Bio will be in
the show notes. Blessed be the Lord of my rock,
who trains my hands for war and fingers for battle. Now,
(00:42):
I've done a lot of episodes touching on the three
O eight and things about the three to eight. Recently
did one on the three O weight for survival philosophy,
and that came out of a polighted on Patreon. So
if you want to be part of that kind of stuff,
go to Patreon. Should be linked in the show notes.
But that was one of the top choices for go
to survival caliber, and it's not without merit. So I
(01:05):
was just gonna do a list of the top three
oh eight rifles that I think are best for survival.
That's still coming, but I thought I should do one
on philosophy, and then I was gonna record the one
on top three eight rifles Scott Willing. I'll still get to.
But then I thought I should do one on how
the three zero eight stacks up to other calibers. Other
(01:26):
calibers you may compare it to. It won't be an
exhaustive list, right, I'm not going to compare it to everything,
but some of the big ones, the common ones. So
let's dig in here. Let's compare it to the one
center five rifle cartriges that beats it. I'm pretty sure
for sales and popularity, and that's a two twenty three.
Now the three oller eight is a full powered rifle cartridge.
(01:50):
Now I'm going to give you rough numbers. Exact numbers
are going to depend so much on so many different factors.
You can't go by what's printed on the back of
the box. Barrel length, temperature, altitude. Somebody I dearly love
recently asked me, like, what's the drop on a three
oh eight at five hundred yards? And I'm like, that's
like asking how many gallons of gas it's going to
(02:13):
take you. I forget what I said, but something like
to go from where you live on the east coast
to California. That depends on so many factors, right, you
might get a rough estimate, but you're not gonna know
for sure. There are so many factors in that, so
I'm gonna throw out rough numbers, and of course it
won't be exact, so it's a good way to remember
it in round numbers. I generally remember your basic vanilla
(02:35):
three hweight load as one hundred and fifty grains at
twenty eight hundred feet per second, and none of that
ridiculous French Revolution measurements here, no metric here. When I'm
talking about grains and feet per second, I'm not doing
the metric units of those. If a cartridge is designated
a metric thing, I guess I'll have to begrudgingly use that.
(02:58):
But three oh eight one hundred fifty grain at twenty
eight hundred that's a full powered rifle cartridge. The two two,
three or five five six. Make sure you're gun can
shoot what you're shooting out of it if you blow
yourself up at your fault, not mine, but UH, generally
rough numbers for that. Your classic load, you're fifty five
grain load at thirty two hundred feet per second, and
(03:19):
that's generally a rifle velocity, not a car being velocity.
But two different worlds here. That is an intermediate rifle cartridge.
It is not a full powered It's an intermediate and
I would say kind of low on the intermediate spectrum.
But it is a lightweight, high velocity cartridge. If you
(03:40):
look at a little bit heavier load, be looking at
you know, a sixty two grain at three thousand and
I'm not gonna go through all the grain weights, but
it's a lightweight, high velocity round. A small boar cartridge.
An African big game hunter may use large boar and
small board. I'm gonna use it the way I'm familiar
with that. As far as like competitive shooting and stuff
goes to a small thirty caliber is large bore thirty
(04:03):
caliber America's kind of go to rifle caliber. It's a
full powered rifle crture to one hundred and fifty grain.
They are all kinds of grains. Common grain weights go
up to one hundred and eighty grains, but you know
one hundred and fifty, one hundred and sixty eight, one
hundred and seventy five hundred and eighty grains, are common
in three oh eight way heavier, a little bit less velocity,
(04:25):
but it's a full powered rifle round your big thing here,
And I could get real nerdy in this, but I'm
gonna try and do a brief summation of these two
cartridges to point this out. There are many scopes, and
those scopes with the ballistic drops are not always exact.
There's so many factors, but they're a rough estimate. Many
of them will have the same drop calculations for five, five,
(04:47):
six and three oh eight. Why because they're pretty similar,
so as trajectory goes, i'll settle down. Not exact but
rough estimates. They're about the same. You're just getting a
lot more payload. The three oh eight, you also, with
that heavier hitting cartridge have literal heavier weight. Your expense
(05:09):
not just in cost of AMMO, which will cost more,
but in cost of weight, which if we're talking about survival,
is a big deal. Now. The three away I think
is more effective round per round, but you can carry
less rounds of them, So it just depends on what
you're trying to do. If you're talking about large you know,
charismatic megafauna, you know, three weights a way better round
(05:33):
for that. Yes, you can hunt deer with the two
twenty three. I've guided, I've hunted all over this beautiful country.
It is two two three is a completely marginal, barely
acceptable der round with really really good AMMO selection. Three
O weight's a good deer round even with you know
what I would call walmart loads, not a full metal jacket,
(05:55):
but like just a cup and core bullet. It's a
decent round. And again you certainly can't hunt dear with
two twenty three. It's not a great round for it.
Three weights way better for that. As far as fighting man,
that really depends how much AMMO do you need to carry.
Are you just trying to break contact? You're trying to
stop a determined attacker. You're just trying to dissuade them
(06:17):
or wound them and then break contact two two three
I'll do that probably as good or better with less weight.
You're facing a determined attacker some you know Muslim wants
to kill a bunch of people and he's gonna die
doing it because he foolishly thinks he's gonna get a
bunch of virgins. Then you probably three a weights your
bet you're trying to stop a vehicle that's trying to
(06:38):
run into people. Free weights A better round for that
just depends on what you're trying to do. But let's
move on to the next cartridge. Six' five Creed more
perhaps the only cartridges come out in the past fifty
years that really took a chunk of the market and
really maybe cut into the three awight. Sales it's a good,
round AND i don't like it for the reason a
(06:59):
lot of people LIKE i don't think it turns you
into a super sniper just because you own. ONE i
don't think that you probably need that or need to
be shooting that far for most. Things but it's it
is a full powered rifle. Cartridge as much as people
might might crap on the six y five creb, more
it is not an Intermedia it's a full powered rifle.
Cartridge if you look at the ballistics and, velocities six'
(07:21):
Five creb moore is not simply a neck down three.
AZER weight i should say it is a Neck down
it is a neck Down Thirty. Thompson center you can,
load longer, sleeker bullets but it's not an. Intermediate cartridge
i'm gonna Go to WIKIPEDIA because i don't have these
numbers like, rough numbers kind. Of memorized but if, we
look if we Take a wikipedia as, being true it
(07:43):
lists one hundred and twenty grains at just over three
thousand feet. A, second NOW remember i talked about the
classic one of the classic five five six loads being
a sixty two grain at just over three thousand or around.
Three thousand this is one hundred and twenty at. Three
thousand this is a double. The weight it's a full powered.
Rifle cartridge and it lists a one hundred and forty
three gram which is real common at twenty seven. To
(08:05):
ten it's a six point five millimeter or twenty, six
caliber twenty two caliber for the, two two three thirty
caliber for the threeweight and twenty six caliber kind of in,
the middle but the bullet weights are a lot closer
to three. O eight it gives you longer. SLEEPER bullets
i was a fan of sixty five calibers long before
the Sixty five creamore. CAME out i like the, sixty
(08:27):
five but Fifty. FIVE swede i like the Two, sixty
remington which is kind, of supplanted but there is nothing
wrong with the Sixty five, creed more not that it
does anything those other calibers really don't do for practical
purposes for. Most people but it's way more, readily available
which if you're talking, about survival that's a. Big deal
(08:47):
it's not as available as. Three weight you're not gonna
find a bunch of surplus if you wanted to, run
SURPLUS which i don't recommend most of, the time but
you're not gonna find a bunch of surplus sixty. Five
creedmore but it, is very very, widely available not as much,
as five, five six or not as much as three,
A weight but you go to a decent supporting, and
(09:08):
store Even, a walmart and you're going to find a
pretty big selection if they have a decent selection of
six y. Five creamore it's a. POPULAR cartridge i would
not advise you to get some. NICHE cartridge i would
not advise you to have your go to survival center
fire rifle caliber be sixty five y fifty. Five sweet
it's a. Great caliber i'd love to have, a nice
pretty one for fair, weather hunting but, for survival it's
(09:31):
just not a. Good choice six To five creedmore is,
mainstream now it's a. Mainstream, cartridge now how does it.
Stack up it's it's pretty close and powered to. Three,
weight now some people will crap all over that three
aways better. At something six y five creamore is better
as to. Some things. Three weight it's going to allow
you to shoot. Heavier bullets six y five creamore is
gonna give, you sleeker higher sectional. Density bullets there in,
(09:54):
flight characteristics better. Sectional density it is a decent big.
GAME round i would shoot a little bit bigger game
with the three OWEIGHT than i will with the six
to five. Grade more but for most people where the
biggest thing they're gonna hunt is black bear and white,
tail deer it's, it's, plenty plenty plenty for that also
(10:14):
be a little bit lighter, to CARRY but i don't
think you'd notice. The difference it's really the only contender
or as a full powered rifle cartridge that's really cut
into the sales of the three to eight in the past.
Fifty years it's a good it's a, good cartridge it's a,
good caliber but in a, practical rifle not some big
eighteen pounds abomination that's meant to be shot off, a
(10:35):
bench because that's about as practical as a crossbow, For
survival sorry to go to, the bathroom all of your
favorite survival fantasy silver. Screen, myths okay what are some
other things we can compare. It to there's THERE'S really
i mean another big one that comes up as a
twenty two, long rifle but you are comparing, you know apples.
(10:58):
And oranges there completely. Different philosophies twenty two long riffle
shines because you can buy a bunch of it, real
CHEAP which i think a lot of people they may give,
other reasons but that's their. Big reason they're drawn. To
it they can buy a, rifle cheap and they can
buy a LOT of, ammo cheap and there's nothing wrong.
With that and you can carry a lot of it,
on you which is another. Big thing like you could
carry several thousand rounds of twenty two and still carry.
(11:19):
Other supplies you're not carrying several thousand rounds of three,
oh eight and you're not bugging out on foot with
several thousand rounds of three. O eight and any any
plane you have to bug out should have, a contingency
even if it doesn't start out that way to be
a man. Portable system but as far as. Ballistics go
i'm not even gonna bother, comparing them because there's it's apples,
and oranges like comparing a little kid's red tricycle To.
(11:40):
A ferrari there's just not much of. A comparison they.
Have wheels they're. Both cartridges another one would be the.
Thirty six the thirty all six is a classic and
it's available in a bunch, of rifles the very Storied
(12:01):
historic american. Military cartridge it's a. Phenomenal, cartridge now if
you listen to the OTHER episode. I did don't pretend
to think to everybody listens to. Every episode i'm not
that not, that, Vain RIGHT but i talked about THE
three o eight was developed by the military industrial complex
or the, military whoever to pretty much duplicate the old
school thirty, six load the one of the classic military
(12:25):
thirty all six loads and a, smaller package and it. Does,
that now, calm down it's not equal to A thirty,
ell six but it duplicates that old you KNOW what
i forgured it was one hundred and, forty seven one
hundred and fifty or eight. Military load three oweight pretty much.
Does that we had some powder advancements from nineteen, oh
three which is when it was. First developed it was
changed a little bit in nineteen, oh six but we
(12:47):
had some powder advancements between there and you know the, nineteen,
fifties right and we had some more powder advancements. Since
then so both cartridges benefit. From those, yeah six the,
longer version it's got more. Powder capacity you can gain
some velocity over the three. Oh eight, the big big advantage,
(13:12):
to ME and i sometimes will gravitate towards a thirty,
all six is that it handles. Heavier, bullets well if
you're looking at one hundred and, fifty grain even one
hundred and sixty, FIVE grain i don't think the juice
is gonna be worth to squeeze there. For that but
if you're looking at heavier bullets one hundred and eighty
grain up the two hundred up to two hundred and,
(13:32):
twenty grain you're really really gonna have an advantage with
the thirty. All SIX and i think that's where. It
Shines and i'm not talking about just shines for an
all around, survival gun but shines, for larger. Heavier. GAME
right i live in the you might Call The Greater
Yellowstone Area, Idahoa wyoming montana like where there are big,
(13:55):
big megafauna, elk moose both kinds of bear like like big.
Heavy thing i'm not a big fan. OF magnums i
don't think there's much on the on the planet that
a good bullet construction thirty out six load. Won't handle for,
most PEOPLE three o eight is gonna, Be fine but
if you're in that area, with bigger, heavier game thirty
out six does have a bit of an, Advantage there
(14:17):
so that's going to be super important all. The time
but we are comparing these. For survival if you're, talking about,
you know a landing craft being able to carry, you
know a certain NUMBER of ammo cans for, at flounders
or an aircraft being able to fly in a BUNCH
of ammo, or helicopter there is a distinct military advantage in, you,
(14:40):
know LIGHTER smaller ammo cans that you. Can stack the
average riflemen the AMOUNT of ammo that you. CAN carry
i don't think you're gonna notice much difference honestly BETWEEN
three o eight and thirty. Outs six so not much,
difference there but your big advantage. Is there there are
many many modern semi auto let's call them fighting rifles
or battle. Field rifles IN three, o eight there really
(15:01):
aren't in thirty. OUT six i know there's one. Or
two you don't HAVE to i know, they exist but they're.
Not common if you're looking for a dual fighting slash,
hunting LOAD three o weight is really going to get.
The advantage if you're looking at a better, hunting load
they're both. Really good and if you're looking at, heavier
game thirty out six is perhaps. The Best and i'm
(15:24):
not going to, discuss bigger, heavier rounds, YOU know i
think that, you know going back to the, crossbow analogy
which is just ridiculous because they're glacially slow, to reload
often way more powerful than. You want but something like
a three hundred wom meg or a three, thirty eight
those are if you, have one and you know the
peanut butter and chocolate hits, the fan it's better than a.
(15:45):
Sharp stick but it's not a. WISE choice, i mean
generally consider them a wise choice, for hunting which a
lot of people will get. Upset at you're better with
a cartridge that you'll shoot more in practice, with MORE
and i think you'll do that more with a non.
Magnum cartridge i've been through a magnum phase very early
in my kind of. SHOOTING arc i think you're better
off with a non. Magnum caliber you're gonna, shoot MORE
and i certainly think they're more practical for. This APPLICATION
(16:07):
so i hope you've enjoyed this episode where you compared these.
Different Cartridges if i'm gonna air these back to back
or do them like one per week or something, like
that make sure you're like subscribed and leave a review of.
The podcast your tactical tip and tactical verse of the
day are going to. Be intertwined this came up in,
the chat, but uh. A shovel a shovel is not
(16:32):
just it's? A commandment did you? Know? That also you
shall have a place outside the camp where you may,
go out and you shall have an implement among, your
equipment and when you sit, down outside you shall dig
with it and turn and cover your refuse common. Sense
(16:52):
command you can have all the coolest weapons in you're in,
the world but historically diseased things, like this not, just
dysentery but things Like this terryan bacteria and viruses and
things like that kill as many or more people, than
warfare so don't miss the forest for. The trees the ultimate, survival,
manual ever Is. The bible don't forget. About that thanks,
(17:14):
for listening and have a. Blessed day
