Speaker 3 (01:24):
No thank you, sir.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
What do you coming to a saloon?

Speaker 2 (01:27):

Speaker 5 (01:28):
No offense, mister Sabbats, I just don't feel like a drink.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
No man's free to do what he feels like. Henry,
up to a point, he is. You're all alike, you Southerners.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
We keep our word to men and to women.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
How is that what you're here for to see? I
don't run off.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
No man's gonna shame my sister, sir.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Oh what are you talking about?

Speaker 6 (01:51):
I'm going to marry on.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Two days, Yes, sir, you are.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Look, Henry, we postponed the wedding last month. I had
to go to Abilene on business. I run a big ranch.
It takes a lot of hard work and time, and
the ranch comes first. Can you get that through your head?
I understand.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
I just hope for your sake, you don't have to
go anywhere this time. Polly wasn't proud of having to
call off the wedding last night.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Well, I suppose you.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Leave that to me and Polly and keep your puppy
nose out of this.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
I don't care for that, remark less the sibbitts or no.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Well, then let's see what a young Confederate gentleman does
about something he don't care for.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Go ahead, you're wearing a gun.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
You can't bluff me some all right, Hold at you too,
there's this little whipper snap off of my back, Marshal
before I shoot. That's enough, sits. I don't want any
fighting here, especially between prospective brothers in law. You too
ought to be ashamed of yourself. Now, Henry, you go
on get out of here. Huh, go drink someplace else tonight.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
I'm not drinking, Marshall.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
You're still ahead, get out anyway. Huht.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
But don't you forget what I said, mister Cyberts.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Oh those hot headed Virginias. I don't know if I
ought to marry into a family like that or not.
I'll marrying your problems. Just don't kill any of them.
That's all. Have a drink, Marshall, I got one at
the table over there. Thanks.

Speaker 7 (03:21):
Well later, maybe maybe you sure.

Speaker 8 (03:32):
Stop that just in time.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Mass.

Speaker 8 (03:34):
Yeah, that kid wouldn't have had a chance against nat Cy.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
No, but he's had tried it.

Speaker 8 (03:40):
Anyway, They're gonna make a real happy family.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
They'll get along Cybrids and Polly anyhow.

Speaker 8 (03:48):
They will of Henry and his father. Give my chance.
It's too bad missus Charyman isn't still alive. Shit, handle
it better.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Other nervous about the wedding, that's all, Kittie.

Speaker 8 (03:59):
And about Cyber. It's money.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
They need it bad. They used to be rich, Kitty
back in Virginia.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Sure, before the war.

Speaker 8 (04:09):
What about now? Why do you think you're so happy
to be able to marry Polly off.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
To a big rancher like Tibert.

Speaker 8 (04:16):
You know it as well as I.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Do, Man, Yeah, except for Polly. I think she's real.

Speaker 8 (04:21):
Fond of Sure, and he's fond of her too. After all,
she's a woman.

Speaker 9 (04:26):
Isn't she.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah? I know, But maybe you'll settle down now and
quit running around so much. I hope so for her sake.

Speaker 8 (04:37):
When's the wedding match day after the march?

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yea, that's what they say.

Speaker 8 (04:40):
You're going, aren't you?

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
I suppose I'll go.

Speaker 10 (04:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
I love wedding in great heavens, Kitty. I nearly forgot what.
I saw Polly on the street the other day, and
she asked me to tell you that you'd be welcome
at the wedding if you want to come.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
She did.

Speaker 8 (04:57):
I've only met her at the store and around.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
She likes you, anyway, that's what she said. Well, see, Matt,
you think I should. You were invited for the bride.
I don't know why not.

Speaker 8 (05:09):
Well maybe I better think it over.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
She's got enough trouble as it is.

Speaker 8 (05:15):
But anyway, I feel kind of good her asking me.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
They're just people kidding, like anybody else.

Speaker 11 (05:24):
Oh.

Speaker 12 (05:39):
If there's anything I hate, it's a liar, Matt.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
What's the trouble? Not these ages?

Speaker 12 (05:48):
The cooks for they were fresh, and I know darn
well they've been put down in water glass.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Why don't you raise some chickens? Dog?

Speaker 6 (05:56):
I would, but just create a whole.

Speaker 12 (05:58):
New class of the chicken tease?

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Hear it? For a bad day, Doc, you started feeling
this way.

Speaker 12 (06:06):
Uh, I'd soon a trust crazy bull over there then
most people I know around here.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Uh crazy Buller. Oh? Oh yeah, Hm, I haven't seen
her in a long time.

Speaker 12 (06:19):
That's the funny thing about her, man.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
She's still sort of pretty, so you're looking her eyes.
She is, you know, Doc, I can't help feeling sorry
for her. I know, but there's nothing anyone can do
to help her. No, I guess not. M She came
to see me a couple of weeks.

Speaker 12 (06:36):
Ago, had the egg give now, and she paid my
fee too. And if crazy Buller can pay up, you'd
think the more prosperous citizens around here could too.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Oh. I sometimes wonder about these people.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Man, really bad.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Uh, maybe you charge too much.

Speaker 12 (06:54):
If I charge nothing, they'd still cheat me somehow.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Good morning, miss Dylan Chester, looking here at the read it. No,
if nat Cyberts marries that trim and girl will be
a killing. I'm wanting the law to stop it before
it's too late. There's no signature. What'd you get this, Chester?

Speaker 3 (07:19):
It was under the office door when I opened up
this morning.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
What do you make of it? Let me see it,
Matt here.

Speaker 12 (07:27):
Oh oh, it's printed, but I might recognize writing now
that's why he printed it.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
I guess.

Speaker 12 (07:32):
Nah, I see, I wouldn't want to be on that
Cybert's boots. Young Henry is gonna shoot him if he
doesn't marry Polly, and here's somebody who's gonna shoot him
if he does.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
All in all, it'll make for a lively tomorrow, Chester,
I think we better talk to Cyberts about this. Yes, sir,
he's staying at the dodge house to laughter wed Yeah,
I know. Well, so long I can be sure and
have a pleasant day.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Are surely, Matt Come on.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Well, Marshall, jes home, mister Savage. I'd like to talk
to you, Savage, So I sure, Marshall, come in, Come in?

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Thank you?

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Uh Chester. I found this note at the jail this morning, Savage.
Warn't look who wrote this, and I thought maybe you
could tell me. No, I've got no idea, Marshall. Oh
can you think of anybody who doesn't want you to
get married? It was there last night, Marshall. Sure, don't

(09:11):
look like it, I know, but I was thinking of
somebody else, some enemy of yours who maybe wants to
cause trouble. Oh no, I've got enemy. Sure what man hasn't.
But they don't have nothing to do with me and Polly,
or they care if I get married. Well, say, maybe
it's just a joke. Somebody's playing on you. Why he
poured joke under the circumstances, I suppose it would be.

(09:35):
Old man told me to stay away from women a
long time ago. I should have listened to him. It's
a little late now, isn't it, Siberts. Yeah, if you
got any ideas, let me know. Anyway, we'll be at
the wedding. We'll do what we can, and I'll be
wearing a gun too. Marshall, you can count on that

(09:56):
that Cybrits was a little wild, maybe, and he had
a RepU imitation with the women. But at the same
time he'd worked hard, and everybody felt that once he's
settled on, he'd probably be as steady as the next man.
In any case, I didn't like the idea of a
groom having to wear a six gun at his wedding,
and even less the fact that a shooting might take

(10:17):
place in the church. So I went out to see
the Troyman's Polly came to the door and ushered me
into the front room where our father and Henry were sitting.
Can we fetch your something, Marshall? Glass bourbon? No, thank you,
mister Trouman. It wouldn't be very good. Bourbon. I'm afraid

(10:37):
drives us up. Money's down. Things haven't been easy lately,
not for this family anyway. Please fin Polly. I hate
to bothery in this way, but while it's important, nothing's
happened to me.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
If he's run off.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
All right, quiet, Henry, I'll let the Marshall speak now.
He's all right, Polly. I just wanna know if you
can think of anybody who'd uh try to put a
stop to the wedding tomorrow, try to stop it. That's right, Henry.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
But Marshal, I don't understand.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Well, somebody's threatened to Polly. I don't know who it
could be, and neither does that Cyberts. I talk to
him about it too. Is this about a stranger? It
sure is? Is this true, Marshal?

Speaker 8 (11:21):
And it looks that way, poly But who'd mob wanted
to get married?

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Uh? Probably when you uh took up with that, Cyberts.
Was there anyone else who might have been jealous about it?
Uncommonly jealous? I mean enough to start trouble tomorrow. No, Marshall,
there wasn't. Say what about Red Withers?

Speaker 8 (11:41):
Who Red Withers and I broke off two months before that, Henry. Besides,
he's gone to lost Animis.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
And there wasn't anyone else, no nothing unless you was
sneaking out at night like father.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Another would like that out of you. And I believe
its dead, Marshall.

Speaker 5 (11:59):
And you thought that maybe not cyber To himself might
have started this.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
He didn't. How do you know he didn't.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
He ran out once before, Henry.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
He's not that kind of a man, Henry. That's why. Now,
let's not get all upset about this. Uh. Probably, I
promise you that Chester and I will be there tomorrow
and we'll see that nothing goes wrong. Thank you, Marshall.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
I'll be there too, don't forget that.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Sure, Henry. But don't come wearing a gun. Why not,
because I'll take it off you if you do. You're
too ready to use it. Is there anything I can do, Marshall, Well,
I'll let you know if there is. Mister Truyman, I'm
sorry I had to trouble you with this.

Speaker 5 (12:40):
Probably I understand, Marshall.

Speaker 8 (12:42):
I thank you kindly.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
I'll see you to the door.

Speaker 9 (12:45):
Thanks.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
We will return for the second act of gun Smoke
in just a moment, but first, with the arrival of
warm weather, people tend to forget their troubles and other
people's troubles too. We go off for the pleasures of
the beach, the forests, and the countryside. By all means,
let's forget the most.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
That life has to give. But let's keep the need.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
Of the Red Cross, the continuing need for blood somewhere
in our minds, at least once this summer. Give a
pint through your local chapter. Don't forget disaster waits on
no season. Give blood during the summer too. Now the
second act of gun Smoke.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
The next day was the wedding day, and Chester and
I waited outside the church till Polly and that Cyberts
had arrived, and we went inside and took up our
positions on the far right and the left of the order,
facing the congregation. We were wearing our guns under our coats,
and nobody seemed to take much notice of us. As

(14:19):
soon as the ceremony began, I had a feeling that
nothing would happen, and as it neared the end, I
signaled to Chester and we slipped quietly out to the
church influence. Oh, I could see him. There was a

(14:46):
lot of real friendly faces against you're doing. Yeah, and
there's nobody outside here.

Speaker 6 (14:53):
That's mister Cyriz Buggy right there is.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
He's driving, probably after the ranch, right after the ceremony. Chester.
She didn't want to celebrate of any kind. Well, it
looks like there won't be any trouble after all.

Speaker 5 (15:04):
I sure hope not, and there wouldn't be in all.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
That's ober. They'll be coming out now. Yes, Uh, we'll
stay close to until they drive off. I could happen
right out here.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yes, I'll watch whichever way you're not watching.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
How would you know which way I'm watching unless you
spend your time watching me? What? Oh well, no, I
didn't recom looking here the count Oh my, don't.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
Say look proud, Marshall.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Congratulations, thank You's get over.

Speaker 6 (15:52):
Here for me, sir.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
For sure. Oh, I guess that warning wasn't much to
worry about after all. That looks that way. You got
nothing but friends here. As far as it sure unsettles
a man, though a note like that, I think you
can forget about it now. Sibert I'll forget it when

(16:14):
I find out who wrote it. Marshall. Look, that's what
I wanted to ask you. What if you learned anything
about it? Let me know you promised me that what
would you do if I did find out? I'd kill him,
That's what I thought. Look, Seiberts, you're married now, and

(16:34):
you've got more than yourself to think about. I'm a
peace officer, I'm paid for it. It's my job, and
if I find out who wrote that note, I'll run
him out of the country and I'll try to keep
you from finding out who it was. I'm not a
boy in, Marshall. I'm not sure I appreciate you trying
to protect me, or what about Polly Polly? Yeah, yeah,

(16:57):
I think I see what you mean. Marshall. You're just
not used to being married, siren, so we're go on
start getting used to it. Probably is looking for you
for it, Thank you, Marshall.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Sure, well, are we all said anything wrong? Mister Dillon?

Speaker 2 (17:20):
I don't think chester. Come on, let's say him.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
Thank you all right, Folly stop you're going, that's the way,
come to see us off the lad.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
Come by.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Am bye. That's my goodness, mister Dillon.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
What Chester, I'm just like an old woman at a wedding.
You know they are to have more weddings here. If
you like him that much, Chester, why don't you do
something about it?

Speaker 4 (18:06):
Well?

Speaker 2 (18:07):
What could I do? Get married?

Speaker 10 (18:11):
Me?

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Get married? Well? Why not? Now, mister?

Speaker 6 (18:15):
Don't you know? I can't do that?

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Why don't make enough money to keep body and soul together?

Speaker 9 (18:19):
Just for me?

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Let alone a wife and a lot of kids and
in laws and all that.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
My goodness, Well you could start with just a wife.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Did you hear that?

Speaker 2 (18:28):
Yeah? Down the road Tiberates took her. Come on, grab
a horse, anybody's horse? Chester?

Speaker 10 (18:36):
Pardon me, there's the buggy just past the bridge. I

(18:56):
don't see nobody else.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
He's up Chester, so we don't scare the horse, all right,
take a look under the bridge.

Speaker 13 (19:13):
That s all right, Marshall, Marshall, he shot him?

Speaker 2 (19:28):
Is he dead? Polly?

Speaker 13 (19:30):
He's breathing. But I couldn't drive the horse back and
hold him too.

Speaker 4 (19:36):
Oh Marshall? Why did they do it?

Speaker 2 (19:38):
Who did it? Pary? How am I worth her?

Speaker 13 (19:40):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (19:42):
I didn't see anybody.

Speaker 13 (19:44):
We're just driving to crust the bridges.

Speaker 6 (19:46):
He shot him. There's nobody around this building.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
How is he?

Speaker 13 (19:53):
Oh, please, Marshall, do something, he'll die.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Chester getting the buggy and drive back the docs quick.

Speaker 12 (20:01):
Just give me them lines and.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Tell everybody to stay in town. I don't want to
messing up.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
The tracks out here. Now, hooray, we'll be there, Polly,
hold him tight now.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
As soon as the buggy had gone and the dust
had settled, I looked around everywhere but could see no one.
And then I walked back and followed Chester's horse tracks
down off the wagon road. Here's one the only marks
on that side of the bridge. So I crossed over
to the other side, and there I found the footprints
of what must have been either a child or a woman.

(20:42):
They let off in the direction of a small cabin
about three hundred yards away, and I followed them, done
in hand at the slow truck. When it was clear
that whoever it was had gone straight to the cabin,
I left his trail and approached the door from a
right angle. Right. There's nobody here, hold it, Oh you Marshall,

(21:23):
you'll a come on outside, bill a quick, now, who's
in there? Tell me nobody, Marshall, nobody, Now that I'm
out here, you're trapped. Come out with your hands up?
What are you yelling for? Marshall? They're all got my
hands up. See, get out of the way, della, Get.

Speaker 9 (21:44):
Out of the way.

Speaker 13 (21:46):
Everybody that tells crazy dealer to get out of the way.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
That's what that's said.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
Get out of the way, crazy dealer not but they
won't say it no more.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
I fixed them, Billo, What are your talking about? He
wouldn't even look at me on the street after then
he up and married that Troyman girl. You mean you shulling?
I warned you, Marshall. I told you to stop it.
I told you what happened. I told you.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
Why didn't you stop stoping?

Speaker 2 (22:26):
You'll love? I'd take it easy now you believe me, Marshall.
What take a look in the Captain by Heaven? I
will what's this all about? You'll let there's nobody in

(22:59):
there now my rifle or where is it? I care?
But to do it? I'd spend fired alright? Did you
really shoot not? Cyberge Villa. I want the truth now

(23:20):
that I would didn't? I I hate him? But why
why did you do it? Tell me? No, I won't
tell you. I don't have to. H It's clear enough
that you did it. Alright, b'ler, get your things, let's
go into town. I don't need nothing, Marshalls. I got

(23:41):
all dressed, stuff and everything. See see yeah, yeah, you
look fine. I feel better now, Marshall, now that it's
all over, deady, I feel a lot better give her

(24:17):
anything she wants, just to see that she's comfortable. Yes,
sure I will. It's your beats, all old unit. Yeah,
and I'm going up the ducks. Maybe cybrids can talk now?
Will you better hurry? Probably be back a minute. Alright,

(24:49):
hello Max? How is he duck? I can't tell you,
but don't worry him out, No, allow, Cyberts, Marshall. I
guess we should have stayed with you a little longer.

Speaker 9 (25:05):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
I don't even know where it came from, Marshall. He
was under the bridge there. I guess it got me
right in the back. It wasn't that, he, Cyberts. It
was a she woman crazy bill that I just locked
her up. Well, Uh, how do you know it was her? Marshall.

(25:29):
I trailed her to her cabin and she admitted it.
She say why she did it? As she said, you
wouldn't look at her on the street. Told her to
get out of the way or something. Doesn't matter much
unless you wanna tell me. Uh, just ad I got

(25:56):
drunk one night, Marshall. She kind of chased after me
of her SINCEMENT tried to keep out of her way.
I see, well, what are you going to tell Polly
if I live? If you live, I don't know.

Speaker 14 (26:16):
Marshall might even tell her the truth? All right, man, No,
that's enough? Yeah, sure, done, so long semons by Marshall.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Two days later, Doc announced that nat Cybers would live,
and the next day they moved him up to the
Troymon House where Polly could nurse him. I never did
know if he told Polly what it was all about.
Maybe he didn't have to. Crazy Bulla never asked about him,

(27:03):
never mentioned his name again. For her, it was all
over and done with. And then finally somebody remembered that
she had people in Saint Louis. And once I located
and I put her on a train and sent her off.
She seemed quite happy about the trip, and more normal

(27:24):
than I had ever seen her. Gun smoke.
