Have Gun Will Travel was a popular western radio drama series that ran from 1958 to 1960. It debuted as a television series in 1957 and was one of only a few American television programs that paved the way for a radio version. Although the radio show initially featured stories adapted from television, many of the 106 radio episodes were original stories. The stories follow the adventures of Paladin, played by John Dehner.

Constipation can be a problem for anyone, even doctors, and
when constipation occurs, it's interesting to see just what doctors
consider important about a laxative they might use or recommend.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Well.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
A majority of the doctors we heard from had this
to say. A laxative should be effective, gentle, close to
natural acting, a medicine that can be used with complete confidence.
Now x lax has been popular with many doctors and
millions of people over the years because chocolated x lax
is effective overnight. It helps you towards your normal regularity.

(03:08):
X flax is so gentle, so close to natural acting,
there's no upset. That's why many doctors and millions of
people use x lax with complete confidence. X lax the
laxative that helps you towards your normal regularity gently overnight.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Traveling from San Francisco to Colorado Territory, a passenger has
his choice of being transported in a cloud of stagecoach
dust or in a funnel of railroad descenders. On my
trip to Pebloux, I had more than a fair share
of both, But once I arrived, the uncomfortable miles were
easy to forget.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
The job was simple.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
The one was good, and after leaving a satisfied client,
I leisurely straddled the rented horse and started the second
phase of my Colorado journey. This was the part I
had really looked forward to, ride north alongside the Yar
Kansas River all the way to Oro City. We're a
visit with my old famis. Ali and Cora bids Ooh well, Cora,

(04:26):
Cora bays way, Wait right up, Cora.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
I cannot believe.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
In a long time you haven't changed. In fact, I
think you look even younger than you did.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
For you and you ain't changed. What brings you to
a city?

Speaker 1 (04:49):
You and Ali?

Speaker 2 (04:50):
I had business in Pueblo, so I decided to take
some time off and not to see how you can
getting along. I was just going to check in that hotel,
and I said, I just.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Can't get over.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Good to see you here in our car has no
cause for you to kid years.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Forgive me, but it's like having your prayers answered all
the years we've known you. Somehow you always show up
when we need you most. There's something wrong, yes there is,
Hu Well it's Ollie. I'm a different man since you
was here last a group. Know what's got into him,
but he's managed to get himself into a whole pack

(05:27):
of trouble.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
I'm sorry to hear that.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Car Listen, I know you don't want to stand out
here on the board walk and tell me about it.
Why don't I drive you out to the ranch and
we can talk on the way.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Well, to tell you the truth, I think it might
be better if Ollie tells you hisself. He's right down
the street. I was just on my way. Why don't
you come with me? Or maybe you've been check in
the hotel.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
No, I can do that later. Com on.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Different since you.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Was here, Paladin, we don't live on the ranch anymore. Oh, yes,
it was too much work for pating for itself. We've
bought a little house on the edge of town. I've
been taking in so that day, right.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Well, you always were one to keep busy. Now how
does Ali take the living in town?

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Well, the way I think is that's what started all
his troubles. This is where it was stopped.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Huh Here the Sheriff's office.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
You mean you mean Olli is in jail.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
It used to shame me to go through this door,
but I think I'm getting used to it now.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
How long has he been here?

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Fifteen days? Oh, he will be glad to see you.
Maybe you can talk some sense into him. Let's go in, Jim,
I want you to me to turn the dollars, mister
Pallad and missus Sheriff's moody. Get them all the way
from San Francis, going to pay us a visit.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Well, I you, I'd never seen you around before. No,
the last time I was in or a city of
a different show two years now.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
All get the keys.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Going to be surprised Paladin.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
I'm actuous to find out what he's been up to. Hey,
you got special company today, Ali, Ali, you won't last when.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
You go into town.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Come on, let him in, Jim, I want to shake
his hand.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Good give.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
I think you and Paladin not to visit alone. I'm
going back to the house.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
If you don't mind your call, that's fine. Come on,
give you intelligence.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Let me get a pro Ali, you're the last person
I ever expected to see in jail.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
Get ahead at something though, Holly, Yes, Courrah, you want
me to bring your hot supper to oh.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Head, And no, don't be going to all that bother.
The food here is good enough for any.

Speaker 6 (07:43):
Man, a Paladin, Why didn't you come by the house
and have supper with me? I'd be happy to I've
been looking for you.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Well, goodbye bye, I'll see you to the door, Cora.
Just yeah, when you're ready to leave, Miss Paladin, all right,
chall if I well.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
Wnt sit down, Paladin. See what a good comfortable bump
they got in, Miss Jail.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
You're at a host and an unusually happy one under
the circumstances.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
What's this all about, Ali? Is this some kind of joke?

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Oh no, it.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Ain't no joke, Paul No, I had a big trial
and everything. Judge found me guilty and sentenced me the twenty.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Days in jail.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Jilly of what well he said to me? And Miss Deane, well,
I know something like that anyway. What he meant was
that I shouldn't erased my old spring wagon down the
middle of the street and rammed it into the side
of the stagecoach. But last part was accident. I sure
didn't intend to do that.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
What in the world were you doing racing your wagon
down the middle of the.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
Street, man, I don't remember exactly why I decided to
do it. Most people have been saying I had a
little too much to drink.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
What do you say?

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yes, they're pretty close to right.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
What's happened to you? Allie?

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Getting drunk and racing wagon man palade?

Speaker 4 (08:53):
And I know it ain't exactly what you call up standard,
but I didn't need no harm. I didn't know I
was going to hit the stage coach. Besides, nobody got hurt.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I think your pride must have been a little hurt
being locked up in jail like this.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
Oh no, I don't mind it a bit. I figured
I had it coming, Judge said. So anyway, I short
of like it here.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
You'll like it.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Ali. You're not making any sense at all.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
And it's hard for you to understand palatte And you're
still young. But when you get to be my age,
you do a lot of remembering about all I remembers,
amounting the hard work and one big black patch.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Of sorrow when we lost our boy.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Siah.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
After a while, you get stuffed up with them memories,
so you go out and you do things you never
thought you would do. No new memories, and this time
happy ones. So I'm happy to be in jail. And
do you know what what you see that power over
there and the other cell sleeping.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
I noticed him when I came in.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
Well, we're just lucky he's taking a nap, or we
wouldn't be able to hear ourselves talk. He complains every
minute he's away.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
But that ain't the point.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Can you guess who he is?

Speaker 2 (09:53):
No, that's Rad Toling.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
You mean one of the Tolen brothers. You guessed it.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
About the nan Is too.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
There's alive outing out killers.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
There's a five thousand dollars reward over their heads.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
If nobody gets the reward unless she touched to both
of them. Sheriff court Rad down the saloon just yesterday. Oh,
I'll tell you that. Sheriff Jim, he's a good law man.
He cannot talk to anybody. You should hear Rad cussing
him out. Says his brother gonna come get him out
of here. And the first thing they're gonna do is
blow Jim's head of us.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Just the boys who would do it if I had
a chance.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
They just imagine me, Olli Beardsley locked up in the
sail next to one of the Toller brothers.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Ain't that something?

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Well? I don't know, Olly, oh.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
My, don't you see Platon. I never been in the
cell for in my whole life. I'll be out in
four days and then I'll ask something new to remember.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
All right, what then? When does this fling end?

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Oli?

Speaker 2 (10:42):
And then?

Speaker 4 (10:42):
I don't know. You don't think much about the future
when you're my age.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Do you think much about corr? Oh?

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Sure?

Speaker 4 (10:48):
But Corey can take care of herself good enough. We've
been married thirty five years. She don't lean on me
for nothing, nothing at all. She might look well and tuney,
but she's healthier than ox. I never worry about Corey,
and I'm pretty sure she never worried about me.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
I wonder.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
I bake that pie just for you.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You had put Oh it's a delicious car, but it'd
be a waste to force.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
It down on Fred. I just over in dollars before
I got to the pie.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Just go to waste. Anyway.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
You can take something down to Allie. You'll enjoy it.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
I don't know whether he would or not. He's been
so unpredictable these past month. I never know what to expect. Nothing, nothing,
Who seems to.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Please Oh, Well, he'll get over it. It's just a phase.
Something has to get out of the system.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
I wonder who that could be.

Speaker 7 (11:49):
I'll see Oh, I was looking for missus b Is she.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Here, Yes, she is, come in.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
That's the matter.

Speaker 7 (12:02):
My papa sent me over here, and he said not
to get you upset and to be careful.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
How I tell you what happened? Oh, it's just awful,
Miss Bisick, just all up. Well, I just don't know
what to tell you, sir.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Well, not take it easy, Jennath, and try to start
from the beginning. Never mind, Please tell us what happened.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Well, this Shriff Jim has been shot. I don't expect
him to live. Oh no, who shot it? And then
tolen brother?

Speaker 7 (12:28):
Oh the one that was loose, the one that wasn't
in jail, my papa said, came right in the fust
door of the sheriff's office and shot Sheriff Jim and
took the keys and let his brother loose.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
They run out of town and go away.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Anybody.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
My papa's getting the posita together right now. Then they're
gonna catch him. But that ain't the.

Speaker 7 (12:43):
Worst Partner's bears, your husband went with him, told him brother,
what y ma'am.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
They brought mister.

Speaker 8 (12:50):
Busy loose too, and my papa says they forced him
to go with them.

Speaker 2 (13:06):

(14:16):
predicament with expected anguish, excused herself and retired to her room,
knowing that I could be of more help elsewhere. I
left the house and joined Janet Broken's Poppa's posse. We
tried to trail the plan Brothers and Ally, but the
darkness made it impossible. Before dawn, we gave up made
our way back to Oro City. Later that day I
learned the church Jim Mooree, who was not going to

(14:38):
die after all. He was, in fact back at work
in his office there, sir, how do you feel well?
My head's a little cloudy yet. But although I was
all right, I guess let's sit out.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
No serious damage and the bullet graved my forehead, but
that didn't do as much harm as a fall light,
and doctor said it was just a slight concussion. Stood
clear up in a couple of days. I'm glad to
hear it. I did mister Brogan fill you in on
our wasted efforts last night?

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Yeah, he did.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
It's terrible to think what they might do to old Ally.
Why don't you think they'd go to the trouble of
taking him with him, probably to use him.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
For cover if they got cornered. Of course, that's.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Why I was glad we didn't track him down last night.
I think they'll turn him loose. In a few days,
he'll be all right. I hope you're right for a
chorus sake? How she holding up pretty well? I was
by there a while ago. Then, do you think we
ought to wait a few days to see if Ally
comes back before we go after him.

Speaker 7 (15:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
We look outside. Those riders pulling up. Why that's Ollie Yeah,
and the Tolan brothers. Hey, you gotta grab one of
these rifles. I may need your help. Yeah, it looks
like they're coming in. You stand back at the door.
I'll cover this side, okay, I you know.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
I mean it's the end of the road.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Holly, Hello Caladin, Holly?

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Are you all right?

Speaker 4 (16:03):
And if I wasn't, I wouldn't be holding his gun
on their backs?

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Would I?

Speaker 3 (16:06):
All right? People?

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Would you know how to sailor? I can't believe it,
neither can I. But let's give my hand just in
case we're wrong.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
But Pladin, I still think he could have stopped by
the swimming first. I deserve one that all drink a peach.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
You will get your drink and you talk to well.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
She wouldn't care. Hey, what you're knocking for?

Speaker 3 (16:41):
This is my house? Run in? Hey, boy boy, what

Speaker 1 (16:50):
You.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
I couldn't believe my years and here you all in
monk Oh now, Corey stop it.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
You don't have to carry I'm like this in front
of mister Pallad.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
Didn't what happened to you last night? I didn't worry sick.

Speaker 4 (17:04):
Now you are no better than to worry about me.
After thirty five years, my man enough to take care
of myself.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Alli, you was with them toling, brothers, them killing.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
Oh, they're just human people like you and me.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Ain't you're going to tell me what happened?

Speaker 4 (17:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (17:19):
Uh, Halligan, why don't you TELI for me? I think
you ought to Alli, I'd I'd like to hear it
again myself. All right now, Corey, you've got to dry
them tears off your feet.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
Sure, Why don't you sit down on the sofa? Didn't
look in this chair?

Speaker 2 (17:36):
It's most comfortable, thank you, Coy.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
He ain't got any brandy in the house.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
No, but I'll fix you some coffee? Would you like that?

Speaker 1 (17:44):
No?

Speaker 4 (17:45):
No, no, don't bother.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Go ahead, Ali, Cory what happened?

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Well? First off, you ought to know that I won't
be going back to jail. Jim suspended my sentence because
I brought in them there toling another single.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Handed you how'd you ever do that?

Speaker 4 (18:00):
And it wasn't easy. They took me to an old
line cabin about ten miles out last night. He's gonna
stay there until morning and then go on to somewhere else.
But I food him whilst over the sleep, I got untied,
took the guns away from him, tied their hands behind
the back, and made him ride back here to jail.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Good heavens, I can hardly believe you did all that.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
I don't know why you can't believe it.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Hey, man are locked up.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
I was right there when he brought them in, and
just like you said, their hands were tied behind them
when he had them covered with one of their own.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Six guns to my only against And there's.

Speaker 2 (18:34):
A five thousand dollars award for those men.

Speaker 3 (18:37):
Five Do you mean Harley will get five thousand dollars?

Speaker 1 (18:41):
That's right now.

Speaker 4 (18:43):
I don't know Pally and I might not get the
full amount.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
There's uh no reason why you shouldn't.

Speaker 6 (18:49):
It, I reckon, I am so proud of you. Well,
you're gonna be like a hero in this town.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
Now, don't get so all fired exc Oh, I think
I've got a lot too.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Well, I'm not so sure.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Doesn't Ali. Don't you think you deserve to be?

Speaker 9 (19:06):
Hell?

Speaker 3 (19:07):
Ali, there's something wrong? Answer, there's something more you ain't
told us?

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Well, yes, there is no You always could see right
through me, Corey.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Ali? I just know what.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
I couldn't go on with it. But the trouble is
if I don't go through that, I'll be in a
regal may go through with pot And the truth of
the matter is then told the brothers forced me to
bring them back to jail.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
They made up that story for me to tell everybody.

Speaker 4 (19:37):
Well, they want to go to jail, and I pretty
fixed steamers and mean too, just as mean as everybody
thinks they are. They got this all planned out, and
if I don't go through with it, they're gonna kill
me and Corey too. Then they'll do it.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Well, they won't do no killing locked up in jail, No,
they'll get out.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
They got all kinds of schemes to get out if
I don't do what they kill me to do. What
was that, Well, Sir, I was supposed to wait until
I elect the five thousand reward money and then I
got to find some way to get him out of
jail and then turn the money over to them. They
promised to give me five hundred dollars of it if
I do it, and if I don't, then Cora and
he will be dead. Oh holly, well, yes, you got

(20:15):
yourself into a pack of trouble this time. But I
didn't do it. I was forced into it, didn't you
see that?

Speaker 3 (20:20):
If you haven't got drunk and raise that wagon down
the street in the first place, you wouldn't be in
this man.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
No, no, wait a minute, Wait a minute, this can't
be as bad as it sounds. After all, the Tolans
are locked up. All we have to do is to
see if they stay there until they are hanged. And
I feel my better if they were hanged. Come on, all,
let's get on and tell a sheriff. We'll get some
townsmen to stand guard duty on those men twenty four
hours a day, and it'll make you feel any better.
I'll stay in Oil City until the Tolan brothers are buried,

(20:48):
and I sure would.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
Be grateful if you did.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Palid and they all to hang them today.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
If they can't, well they'll have to have a trial first, Cora.
But I'm sure we all know what the verdict will be.
I'll stay, but only on one condition much that you
