Have Gun Will Travel was a popular western radio drama series that ran from 1958 to 1960. It debuted as a television series in 1957 and was one of only a few American television programs that paved the way for a radio version. Although the radio show initially featured stories adapted from television, many of the 106 radio episodes were original stories. The stories follow the adventures of Paladin, played by John Dehner.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
All right, hey boy, I'll take you out there. You
can dig for your treasure, you can dig up the
whole desert. But let me tell you something. You won't
find a thing.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Have gone.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
We'll travel, Starring mister John Dayner as Paladin, San Francisco,
eighteen seventy five, The Carlton Hotel, headquarters of a man
called Paladin.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yes, oh, hello, hey boy, you busy, Missapaladin. No, it's
on your mind, Hey boy.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
I want to share news of great good fortune.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Good fortune were wonderful, Hey boy? What is it?

Speaker 5 (01:10):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Here, there see lot of comfor here? Boy? What a
way from Mexico? You read, Missipaladin.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
H Dear mister Chang, after a thorough investigation which has
proven you to be a man of sterling character, you
have been selected to share the proposition I am about.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
To unfold to you.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Some time ago, during an insurrection, an important man in
the Mexican government. Hey boy, before I read any further,
let me guess this man. Did he escape across the
border in the United States with a lot of gold.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Oh, he's a untold fortune, he go, uh huh.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
And he buried this untold fortune in gold somewhere in
this country he saw. Then he later went back to
Mexico and on his deathbed revealed the man who wrote
you the letter where he had buried it.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
A man who wrote letter.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well, hey boy, I'm still guessing.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Oh, you guess pretty good.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Now.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
The man who wrote you the letter isn't able to
undertake the search for the treasure himself, and he is
generously willing to share the secret of the hiding place
with you for a fifty to fifty split, but there
are certain expenses involved.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
He saw two thousand dollars.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Huh, two thousand, and if you send him the two
thousand dollars to cover the costs as evidence of your
good faith, of course, he will send you the information
telling you where the gold is buried.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Am I right?

Speaker 4 (02:29):
Oh? Mysa? How you know?

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Hey boy? Do you know why you received this letter?

Speaker 5 (02:35):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (02:36):
You saw? Because, hey boy, he's a man of stolen
character like you say.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Here, no, no, no, hey boy, because somebody has you
marked for a mug huh, a sucker. Don't you remember
when you first started working here at the carton, the
man who claimed to be a minor sold you the
gold brick.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Oh, he saw gol brick. Tuna to be led. Very sad.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
I don't believe me.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
This letter is an older Bunco game than the gold
Brick Bunco. Of course, if you send two thousand dollars
as evidence of your good faith, you'll never see the
money again.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Oh but, hey boy, did send two thousand dollars?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
You didn't?

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Oh you saw it, dude. I sent all my money
or Missy Wong's money and take up collection for members
of Celestial Dragon Society.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Oh, hey boy, didn't that gold brick experience teach you anything?

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (03:26):
You saw mis Pagon teach you her boy, never buy
core brick.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Hey boy, Miss Wang and the members of the Celestial
Dragon Society had been swindled. But there was nothing I
could do about it. Their money was gone. That night
I went out.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
On the town.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
I had a big evening and a big had to
prove it. When I returned to my room at dawn,
I hung out. They do not disturb sign. I must
remember to have one printed in Chinese.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Mm no, oh no, no, no, who.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Most important?

Speaker 1 (04:16):
We see?

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Hey boy? No later go away?

Speaker 5 (04:19):
Wait?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Oh as, don't give up? All right?

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Come in also so you don't wait to Missapaladin, but
must talk business.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
By so early.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
We wish to hire you services.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
What are you talking about?

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Oh, we receive in mail this morning, not for very fortune.
Most essentially we waste no time. What not a very fortune? See?

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Let me look at that the Arizona desert.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Wow, this is carrying the fiendish cruelly to an extreme.
Why hasn't he sell us about just take your money?
You don't believe this map is on the level?

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Oh you saw. We wish to high service, mister Paladin.
When we find gold, we tell you do you not speak?
Hey boy, I'm not going to have any part of this.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Nuns, Maybe missa Paladan, you tell us best way.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
To get to this place?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
I mean you go by yourselves to that wild country
you know nothing about. He thought to dig for a
treasure that doesn't exist.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
Oh no, Bob, we must go. Misapoladin made big investment,
you poor, sweet trusting babe. He's Apoladin. We lose two
thousand dollars. We not go.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
All right, I'll take you out there. You can dig
for your treasure. You can dig up that ole god
forsaken desert. But let me tell you, you won't find
a thing. But maybe it will accomplish something. Maybe it'll
teach you a lesson. The map designated a strip of

(05:47):
the Arizona territory that bordered on Mexico's Zona Libra or
Fuezo On a haven for fugitives from American law. I
still couldn't quite figure out why the swimmler had sent
the map, unless it was to postpone hey boys inevitable
awakening to the fact that he'd been hoaxed. I had
only hoped that somehow this journey would lead us to
the man in question and the return of hey Boy's

(06:07):
original investment.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
It was a long, hard trip.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
By stage in the Gals, where we rented a wagon
and equipment. When we finally arrived at our destination, Ms
Wong and Hey Boy were still full of high hopes
and good spirits. You had just made camp when I
saw a rider coming toward us. I went out to
meet him.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
Hello, my name is Sweeney Ill, Sweeney, Arizone arranging.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Hello, Sweeneye, my name is Palatin All.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
Then I've seen your outfit and your equipment there.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Looks like he.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Might be figuring to do some prospecting.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Uh. Well, in a way, mister, I don't like.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
To be discouraging but you're wasting your time.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
I'm sure of it. But you see, I'm only acting
as a guide. Those are my bosses over there.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Oh well, I don't blame you none. She'd make yourself
a few dollars if they got a mind too. Let
him go ahead, let him dig for gold where there
ain't none.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Exactly, They would you stay and have a cup of
coffee with us.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Well, thanks, some other time. Maybe I got to get
back on the job.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
What's the arranger business out this way?

Speaker 5 (07:22):
For several months now, we've had a twenty four hour
patrol on this border. Huh every here of Professor Burdick?

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Are they a big time Eastern crook? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (07:33):
Well, he come west pull the biggest hold up in
this territory gold fresh out of thement, a government shipment. Yeah,
we was on his trail and lost him. Then we
got a Tippy's hiding out on them hills right.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Over there in the free zone.

Speaker 5 (07:51):
So close you could darn near spit on him. And
we can't touch him while he's over the line. But
just let him or that sidekick of his step too
on this side beget.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
Where I gotta get.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
Along, Paladin.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, so long, Sweeney, stop by again, I'd do that.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Your nose will be counted this April.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Yes, every nose in the family by Uncle Sam's official
census takers. You may already have received your advanced questionnaire
in the mail. By filling it out beforehand, you'll save
your time and Uncle Sam's refer to the enclosed sample
and make it accurate. Satisfy yourself with the census takers'
credentials beforehanding over the questionnaire, and answer all questions. It's

(08:50):
confidential and it's the law. The purpose behind this nose count,
it's done every ten years, is to bring our population
statistics up to date. More than that, we learn from
the figures the areas that are growing and those that
are diminishing in population. We learned to anticipate future schools
and colleges, public facilities of every kind where the need

(09:12):
is growing, for supermarkets, shopping centers, and so on. The
census count will be more important this year than ever,
So answer all questions fully and accurately. As we said before,
it's confidential and it's the law.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
After the first few hours of watching Hey Boy with
the Shovel, I pitched into help. I could see he
was never going to give up until every inch of
the area had been explored. Four days later, we hadn't
found any gold, but we had a lot of blisters
and a dozen good wolf traps. Hey boy, boy, if

(10:01):
I not here, he.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Pleases, Miss Wang, would you bring me the ladder?

Speaker 4 (10:08):
I want to get out of here.

Speaker 7 (10:10):
I bring.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
You can read.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
We've gotta start filling in these holes got around here,
they're dangerous. Somebody fill in with that ladder. You never
get out.

Speaker 6 (10:37):
You dig almost to China this time, Misapolidan.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
I'm beginning to believe in Miss Wang. I have had enough.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
Not give up. We find treasure.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
You wait and see Miss Wong.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
In an unguarded moment, I agree to you this foolish thing,
thinking it might teach you. And hey boy, let happened
to Hey boy.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Come on, you be careful. Don't follow a one those holes.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
Hey what happened?

Speaker 2 (11:13):
What is it? You're right down there?

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Oh? He's always a holiday by what? Oh? Take lots
of time and lots of deep But hey boy, find pleasure?
You what? Hey boy? Find pleasure?

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Look, I didn't believe it.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
It was a heavy iron chest, and even after we
put the ropes around it and dragged it up out
of the hole with our team of horses. I still
didn't believe it, but then we opened it, and suddenly
the whole thing began to make some kind of sense. O.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
My, oh my, this and most exciting moment in lifeful
Hey boy, must now see kind of benefactory in Mexico
to defy untold fortune.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Hey boy, if my hunch is right, your benefactor will
come seeking you. Oh, don't under I'm just beginning to
It's a pretty elaborate scheme, but yeah, that's the sort
of thing Professor Burdick would do.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Oh who is Professor Budick.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
He's a thief and a swindler, Hey boy. On this
last job of his, he helped himself to some gold
being shipped from the United States mint.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Shines.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
It's too shininess wrong.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Those are freshly minted coins, and there's no question about it.
That's the loop from Burdick's robbery.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
Oh seeing Fanny, honorable professor very gold, same place, say
on a map from benevolent gentleman in Mexico.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Hey boy, I'm afraid that you're a benevolent gentleman is
none other than Professor Burdick. Sure, this whole thing has
to be a setup. He stays safely on the other
side of the border, gets his gold dug up for him,
and makes two thousand dollars in the bargain. That's your money.
So far, his scheme has worked out just the way
he planned. We're gonna have to move fast.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Hey, me's a part, and you already moved too fast.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
For hey boy.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
I'm sorry, hey boy, but you see those hills right
over there. Now, anybody on those hills could watch everything
we do. And I have a hunch that's what's happening today.
Professor Burdick and his partner watched us pull chest out
of the hole. Now, if my hunch is right, they'll
be paying us a visit soon that men come here. Well,
I figure he'll wait until ranger patrol is at the
fire end at the strip and then come across and

(13:10):
try to claim his goal and then get back over
the line before the rangers worked down to this section again.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Oh no, he can't take a goal. Oh we fighting.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Oh no, hey boy, we can't take a chance in
the fight with miss Wong here.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
They're desperate men. No, we'll have to hitch up and
get the goal into the ranger camp. Before Burdick has
a chance to.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Get to us. It'll be dark soon.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Come on, hey boy, Miss Wang and I took separate
chores and worked as fast as.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
We could load in the wagon. But still the daylight
was gone before we were ready to leave. If my
hunch was right, we were cutting it awfully close. But
I thought we could make it.

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Your gear, old package, a food and blankets already in wagon.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
Such a black night, Missa palad on. Missy Wong can see.

Speaker 6 (14:12):
Two feet ahead.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Where's hey boy?

Speaker 6 (14:14):
She went over there to get jaws.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
As soon as we get this chest and the rest
of the equipment in the wagon, we can leave.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
I think I'll go get in my hand.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
The careful of horse.

Speaker 6 (14:22):
Missa plod on off fleet dog.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
I will.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
Hey boy, hey boy, hey boys, quite all right at
the moment, verdict well remarkably fast.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
Draw sir, I didn't expect you quite so soon. Let
me warn you.

Speaker 7 (14:47):
If you choose to fire that gun, your Chinese friend
will be killed. Hey boy, Yes, Louis will be forced
to fire the gun. He has the young man's back.
Now throw down your gun, mister, you win Burdick, bring
him over here, Louis. Yes, I suppose you know, if

(15:08):
you did shoot him or anyone of those, the Ranger
patrol would be down on you before you had a
chance to get back over the border. That's the chance
we will have to take. I don't think for a
moment that I wouldn't shoot. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
You keep moving, Yes, Oh, he's a parlady.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Hey boys, just do as they say.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
Hey boy, right over here, young lady.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
It's your benefactor from Mexico. Miss Wong, come over here
before we get in trouble.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Well, you're a sensible man, sir.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
What's going on?

Speaker 2 (15:40):
He just stand there and those you're told miss they
have guns? Miss Wong? All right, now, where's the gold? Chest?
Is over there by the wagon, Louis? Yes, check.

Speaker 7 (15:52):
I'm sure this seems ungrateful of us after all your efforts.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
And I'll behalf.

Speaker 7 (15:58):
We were in such a hurry when we bury the gold,
weren't quite sure ourselves where it was.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
It's rather a clever scheme of mine, wasn't it. How
did you happen to pick hey boy, that there is
a trade secret?

Speaker 1 (16:11):
I mean, mister Chang is on a sucker.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
List with three stars after his name.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
What does he mean, miss Apollody, Hey, what is it, Loly?

Speaker 2 (16:22):
There ain't no gold in that chest. They must have
hit it someplace, all right.

Speaker 7 (16:27):
I have no time for this sort of human lost
of gold.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
When I was in the chest the last time I worked.
You got what did you do with that gold?

Speaker 4 (16:36):
Mister Wong hit gold?

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Miss Wang? Where I tell him? They're dangerous men? Miss
Wong tell him.

Speaker 6 (16:46):
Well, I shall I show.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
You can come it, Louis.

Speaker 7 (16:53):
I'm going with her hardly the way, young lady?

Speaker 2 (16:57):
All up there?

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Well, it's so dark, I can't say where.

Speaker 7 (17:00):
Are you look to keep a walk?

Speaker 4 (17:04):
That keep this way's? What's wrong? Hey, profession? What's your
man over here where I can't see it? Right?

Speaker 1 (17:21):
That's right, that's right. Well it sounds though Miss Wong
bagged herself a couple of bags?

Speaker 4 (17:35):
Dosy man falling the holes we did? Yeah, don't understand me.

Speaker 6 (17:40):
Miss don't I gold out there? Musy wangs with gold
in NiTi caan in ugged?

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Miss Wang? You didn't.

Speaker 6 (18:05):
You have another piece of cakes?

Speaker 2 (18:09):
Oh? Thank you. There's a wonderful party and I want
to thank you.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
And I I want to thank you for that check
you slipped under my door this morning.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
But I don't feel that I should accept it.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
Oh you saw, we make your business deal.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
We pay some very nice reward money.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
You made quite a haul in reward money, didn't you.
How do you plan to spend all that?

Speaker 4 (18:30):
Well, see there's the Dragun society take their share to
build playground. Very nice for a little girl little boy
in Chinatown.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Well that's certainly worthwhile.

Speaker 6 (18:40):
You know, missa Wog raised in the mission in Hong Kong.
Missa Wong sent money to mission.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Very nice, miss.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
One, he saw, and hey, boys send money to cousins
in China pay their way to Medica.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Well that that's all very generous and unselfish. But it
seems to me that you deserve to spend some of
that money on yourselves. Didn't you indulge yourselves at all?

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Y sa, we make investment.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Oh well now that sound thinking.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
Oh we make a very good deal here.

Speaker 1 (19:09):
Really you read the let's see, Ah, there's no reason
why you should be a slave and toil all your
life for nothing.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Others have grown rich around you. Why not, you know,
why not?

Speaker 1 (19:23):
The opportunity is here for you to Oh no, no,
you didn't, Hey boy, tell me you didn't put your
money on this scheme.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
