Speaker 1 (00:10):
Back here another episode of Heavy in the Paint.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Gerald Brown.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
We're reacting to the NBA draft that just passed, and
you know what, anything associated with the Atlanta Hawks got
to reach out to my guy, his basketball analyst. He's
also now part of Locked On Hawks broadcast as a
co host of the postcast, as well as a basketball
contributed to Sports Rap Radio Detroit. The one he only missed,
(00:36):
DeShawn Tate. DeShawn, I gotta ask you right off the back.
The Hawks have the first pick in this year's draft,
and there have been so much speculation that maybe they'll
trade the pick. Whatever I've said that this draft would
be a saying associated with this draft would be simply
patience is a virtue. The Hawks take Zachary reached out
(00:59):
shay I Hope. I said his name right, but young man,
I think eighteen years old. He only averaged ten points.
What has been the vibe first and foremost with the
fan base of taking this young man? And second of all,
what is the sort of information you've got with regards
to obviously this is going to be a process with
(01:21):
this young man in the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I don't think it's a question.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Jared I appreciate you for having me on certainly underwhelming, right,
And obviously, you know, I don't think that Atlanta's probably
the only fan base amongst those who were drafted that
probably feels like it was just an underwhelming draft in general.
I'm sure I'm not probably educating anybody to anything new
by saying that, But when you get the number one pick,
(01:48):
ironically and coincidentally enough, it's like you're stuck in between.
You get the number one pick in a year that
you're stuck in between potentially two generational players, right, Cooper
Flagg for me next year, in Victor woman Yama for
last year. So there's there's definitely some growing frustration obviously
within within the organization as well.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
It's when it comes to the fan base.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Not a lot that we know about this guy, not
a lot that we probably know about the guy and
Alexander Sar who a lot of people probably said take
him over. We understand that all the cute things are
gonna be spoken about in terms of, you know, the
boxes that resaur shaped checks. We know that the Atlanta
(02:32):
Hawks have been pretty much a terrible defensive team when
it comes to efficiency. Amongst all the other analytical or
things that you know, you can speak of, but he's
checking boxes in terms of maybe being a shooter or
you know, being a defensive player, and you know this
athleticism and wingspan and you know length and all these
(02:54):
other potential and so forth. But it's just the reality
is that it has quite a bit underwhelming. The part
that I didn't really understand about it is if you
knew that within the next forty eight hours from the
time that they were gonna select number one, that you
were gonna make a move under Jante Murray, why did
you not go and get another guard, probably the safest
(03:15):
pick in the draft being a guy who went to
the San Antony Hill Spurs, if I'm just being honest.
And number four, but whole nother conversation there. They didn't
address anybody in the front court, which I think is
a desperate need for this team. That didn't really help
as much. Like you said, a guy who averaged ten
points a game. Now I got destroyed and I know
I'll get a little bit long win this. So you
gotta forgive me, Jerald.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
No, no, no, definitely this is therapeutic, because again it's
a lot of head scratches, you know, that Atlanta Hawks
finally get the number one pick, and it's really not
a draft that is saying, Okay, you're gonna see return
on your investment immediately for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
I mean, and like I said, I'm definitely not speaking
for all Hawks fans, but I definitely have been getting
destroyed on social media over the course of the last
x amount of weeks ever since we left that they're
going to get the number one pick. Let me tell
you what General manager of the Atlanta Hawks, Deshaun Tait said.
The first thing that I would do in this situation
is I would have no other choice but to pick
(04:12):
up the phone after learning I got the number one pick,
a free telephone call, and I got to pick up
the phone and ask Lebron how serious he is about
playing with his kid. I have the first opportunity at
being the one I didn't want to be the person
that watch someone else take him and Lebron goes and follows,
and I'm missing out on that. Him being in Atlanta
(04:33):
essentially is primetime.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
In voter Colorado.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
I think we all understand without having a dumb it down,
regardless as to what it does for the culture, and
maybe only get him for one or two years, which
I think would have been more than enough for me
to find out. But taking Brownie James at any number
without his dad coming over, I don't think we're having
that conversation. After I'm hearing Lebron say no pretty much
go to hell. I'm hanging up the phone after saying, hey, enjoy,
(04:58):
can kon now I'll be we could talk about what
we're gonna realistically do with that pick. I don't think
that it was a terrible idea to package up that
number one pick along with.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
De Jontay Murray, maybe DeAndre Hunter, a.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Guy who hasn't played sixty seven games in his career,
and don't forget you moved up to go and get
him a few years ago at number four, and maybe
go get a Kevin Durant. Maybe if that's enough for Phoenix,
considering the fact Katie might be the only guy that
we think could probably play with Trey Young or just
somebody else. But this is not a team that I
(05:32):
love the idea of getting younger if I'm just being honest,
and we need more adults and more better leadership, more
vocal leadership in the locker room, amongst other things. And
it seems like they're just running on a rat wheel,
running in the same place on a treadmill, running and
quick saying and not really going much of anywhere. And
(05:53):
it doesn't seem like the decision that they've been making
is making a whole lot of sense, unless.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
We're talking about tanking the whole thing and blowing it up.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Well, I mean that that does seem like, you know,
the possibility. But you're right, And I think I was
kind of caught off guard because from like you said before,
you know Bandanovich or you know again, DeAndre Hunter, you know,
I mean obviously Jaylen Johnson stuff. You know this young
man RecA how does he fit in? And that's the
(06:22):
kind of the head scratch. And then you're right. A
few days later they turn around and Trey did John
Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans, And and looking at
that deal, is that kind of a situation where maybe
you would have thought it would have been Trey Young
and not John J.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Murray? Or do you still.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Believe that Trey Trey Young excuse me, has an opportunity
to be possibly moved.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
I want to finish up on this last part real
quick before oheah, go ahead, with what they did on
draft night by picking up recess of all the guys.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Now understand, sorry didn't want to work out from blah
blah blah.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
But what they did on draft night by picking up
Research Shay and then forty eight hours later going to
give up to Jontay Murray for pretty much nothing. I
felt like you waited, even throughout you know, the trade deadline,
everything else, to hold on to this guy.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
For this deal.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
It feels like you really just got At the end
of the day, it feels like you really just got
Brinnie without Lebron if I'm just being honest at.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
The end of the day, to be honest.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Besides that fact, I think that the whole you know, adjusting,
you know, the fit and the needs of the team
and so forth, all that kind of stuff obviously just
didn't leave a very good taste in the mouths of
people who are diehard.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Atlanta Hawks fans and Hawks Nation.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
I do believe that there is some level of reality
if we're talking about, hey, it's not over with yet,
it could be Tray Young next.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
I think that there is some validity to that.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
As much as some people think it is, probably not
not as much as some people think that it isn't
probably not. I think we're just kind of somewhere in
the middle there. I think they're afraid to get rid
of Trey Young. If I'm just being honest, Listen, this
is probably the arguably, I think it's inarguable that this
is the second best player to ever walk through these doors.
As in Atlanta Hawk obviously the top guy, having a
(08:15):
statue right outside of the arena, and you remember what
happened with him. They sent him out the door for
Danny Manning and a and a and a bag of peanuts.
So I think that Trey Young has the has the
franchise by the you know what, and he probably should.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
He's been here six years.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
And if you were talking about in the event, entertaining
the idea of making a move on Trey Young and
not de Jon Tay Murray, which I wouldn't have been
completely upset about. There's a couple of things today, And
I think the first thing is, while we do agree
that it just appears that this team gels well together
(08:57):
and just more from a chemistry standpoint with Dejonte then
they do Trey, they're not selling the same kind of tickets.
There's not the same kind of jersey cells, there's not
the same kind of must watch And if you're not
doing something that Trey actually did do ye like keeping
Dejonte which is the first and only time that this
(09:19):
team has ever gone to the Eastern Conference Finals and
one a game or two. If moving on from Trey
and keeping Dejonte is not duplicating or replicating that of
which Trey Young did, it's almost gonna.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Be like, what was the purpose?
Speaker 3 (09:34):
And people would be just kind of somewhat upset that
you moved on and didn't get better results from that.
I just don't trust. I don't Gerald, I don't trust
the front office and I never have. And I think
this is a big part behind why we probably won't
see anything come out of free agency for the Hawks,
because we never have if you think about it, but
we don't. It's like the blind leading the blind? Who's
(09:56):
leading the way? Is it Tony Restler the owner? How
much does his wife and his son who's twenty two
years old, who has a little piece in on this,
Kyle Korver, Grant Hill, Steve Konan, the CEO, how about
Trey Young himself? By the way, that we didn't even
mention Landry Fields for crying out loud dan Quinn, I'm sorry,
(10:19):
Quinn Snyder, hell dan Quinn for that matter, for crying
out loud.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
All of these different things.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I just don't trust that they were going to make
the right decision if the right decision was in front
of them on draft night. That being said, none of
us knew who the right decision was. Anyway, I just
don't get a good feeling. And honestly, it starts at
the top.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, I mean I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
I mean, even you know, I think Clint Compella is
going to be entering his last year of a deal,
so clearly he's going.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
To probably be moved.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
But just looking at the landscape, I mean, you heard
whispers that really there wasn't a market out there surprisingly
for Tray Young because he's one of those difficult players
that again, he's a guard, he needs the ball in
his hands. And how much better do you make the
team overall if you are that number one guy for
(11:11):
this team. I want to ask you this, in your
honest opinion, Ever since that improbable run by the Hogs,
and and and that year and Nate McMillan took over
Lloyd Pierce and had this team get to the Eastern
Conference Finals, they lose and really again had a great,
great opportunity to get to the NBA Finals, And yet
(11:33):
we saw this team in the following year. Everybody that
was owed money got paid, and the team never was
able to recapture those moments. Do you think it's at
this point now that they really should just blow this
thing up and restart all over again and maybe tank
for Cooper Flag or is it a situation where maybe
(11:54):
bringing in a younger, another star and trying to build
around those pieces that actually fit. Thought, did John Tay
Murray be honest, what you fit with? You know, Trey Young?
Speaker 2 (12:04):
In a back way?
Speaker 1 (12:05):
I just thought that that was a recipe for a disaster.
But do you think which direction do you think they
should go?
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yeah, that putting those guys together really kind of felt
like the exact same reason why I said Charlotte takes
Brandon Miller last year and not Scoop Inderson because it
just didn't feel like it made sense to put Scoop
next to LaMelo ball right, Not because I don't think
it would work to some degree, but I don't think
that you can maximize or drain all the juice from
(12:34):
the orange with both of those guys having great nights
together very often, if ever at all.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
And that's something that I think that we saw at
this point.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
It looks like it's best to blow it up just
because of the decisions, and they're giving me every reason
to believe it. I don't like that idea, if I'm
just being honest, I think that there's certain parts that
just need to go, and there's certain parts that I
think is okay to keep. I'm not sure that anybody
on this team in this particular instance, if you're talking.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
About what we are, that is that.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Is irreplaceable except for probably two guys. And that guy
is Chay Young and that guy is Jalen Johnson, and
it's like everybody and anybody else can go. I mean,
if you make a move on Clint Capella, is realistically
on Yeka Okangu ready to step up and be your
primary permanent five, probably not. And I honestly think that
(13:30):
just you know, there's being instances where you're starting Garrison
Matthews this year late into the season when you're and
I know guys were hurt or whatever, but you know
one or what you know one or two games away
from really being deciding factors as to whether they're going
to get into the play in or not. But you're
starting Garrison, Matthews and vit Kreshy, for crying out loud.
(13:52):
This is a team that never upgraded its depth in
terms of the talent pool coming off the bench. I
think they had a couple Holiday Brothers last year or
something along those lines. I mean, it just wasn't I
think one of the mistakes that they made is they
tried to keep the unit together instead of trying to
(14:13):
move some pieces. You didn't really get anything. Obviously, the
cam Reddish thing didn't pan out well. I think people
were more excited about cam Reddish on Draft night than
they were about Recessche the other night. By the way,
the Kevin Herder thing he ended up obviously moving on.
Lou Williams didn't stick around much longer after that run either.
So I think that they did make a pretty solid
(14:34):
move in which I feel like their arm was kind
of twisted a little bit in terms of trying to
go get the best thing to a star, closest thing
to a star that they could.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
That was dejonte.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
I don't think it was bad for trying it out,
but it just clearly wasn't going to be a good fit.
And I do understand with Trey Young's playing style, which
I think he does kind of sometimes get a little
bit of a bad rep for saying that is not
a winning style. I do, however, believe that I know
that not everybody could probably play with Trey.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
However, he's playing as the.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Same guy that he that you drafted him to be
and doing the things that you asked of him, and
doing those things well, Mama is not giving birth to
people that's given almost thirty and ten every single night,
undersized by the way. I do understand the frustrations, however,
Gerald that you know, Trey pulling up from the logo
with seventeen seconds still left on the on the shot clock,
(15:25):
and you got guys over in the corner wide open,
doing jumping jack, screaming pass me.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
The damn ball.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
I see all of those things. And so I've been
an advocate for Trey for many years. I really have,
and I've been watching the kids since he was sixteen.
It almost looks like he hasn't really developed a whole lot,
because this is the same looking guy that I saw
at that time.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
I'll say this much.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
To answer your question, I think that there are definitely
more than one or two guys that needs to be
moved if they're going to try something different, but they
need better in leadership, guys that know how to win.
Not just only guys that are winners, but guys that
actually know how to go out and do it. Last
thing I will say is that when it comes to
(16:12):
Trey and I get it. You know they're taking a
pole over who's the most overrated player in the league,
or the most disliked or whatever, what have you. A
lot of fingers being pointed at him because of coaches
and call them coach killer that I don't necessarily agree with,
and they're in love with. I think that as much
as I do love the first coach, I think that
(16:32):
he was essentially unless he did something miraculous to overachieve,
he was going to be a seat filler for whoever
the next guy was. And got the opportunity for these
guys to grow up a little bit. You bring in
Nate McMillan, and everybody pointed the finger and number eleven.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
But I heard directly.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
From guys off the record, of course, and I won't
mention their names, but it was just that we don't
think that he's a bad guy or that he has
a bad system. It just wasn't fit for the team
that we have on Howard roster currently constructed. But much
like any quarterback, he's gonna get the credit when they
win talking about Trey, and he's gonna get the criticism
(17:10):
when they lose.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
And I think that's what came of it.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Yeah, and wrapping up for that, you get on out
of here, talk about what you want to see in
this upcoming summer league and perhaps maybe via free agency or.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Make another trade.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
What would be some of the moves Deshaun take the
general manager would make.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
I think you gotta adjudge. I mean, you gotta get somebody.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
You gotta make it feel like this mystery player at
number one pick in a move for Dejonte for nothing
was worth something.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
You gotta go out there and get a guy.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Is that player going to be Kevin Durant, Carl Anthony Towns,
Brandon Ingram, whatever would have you? Probably not. If that
player was a Miles Bridges, I wouldn't be totally mad.
If that player was a DeAndre Ayton. I wouldn't be
totally mad, but you got to mix some type of
up grade. Forget about just complaint making having complaints about
(18:03):
there not being an upgrade.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
To the to the roster as far as.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Depth on the bench, You've got to have an upgrade
in the starting lineup before anything. So I think that's
the first thing. I just want to see them get older.
But this isn't your young Hawks anymore that we're talking about.
I want to see some guys not only get older,
but play older, show that they have developed in the
summer league. I just want to see guys obviously be
(18:28):
competitive and be able to put our eyes on Reci's shape.
But there has to be somebody. They don't get anybody
in free agency. They never get anybody in free agency
for whatever.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
The reason is.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I know we hear so many different narratives gerald about
why guys don't want to come here, but I think
it has a lot to do with something about the
front office. There's been a lot of turnover within it,
from Danny Ferry to this one, that that one, and
everything else, Travis Link and now a whole another guy,
Landry Fields. But there's there just hasn't been any consistency.
(19:03):
The only consistency that we have seen is that they
have been consistently inconsistent.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
I want to see that change well again.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
I think a lot of the people down there and
at l are probably counting down the Georgia football practices
and and getting ready for their season.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
You always got the Braves and the Falcons look really good.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
But you're right, I think it's gonna be a rebuild,
or not even a rebuild, but might be one of
those taking seasons taking.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Gerald they're rebuilding off of a rebuild. Already for crying out.
I mean, let's just be on.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
People aren't gonna tell it how it is, and I
know we're up against it. We gotta go and we
can get ready to get out of here. But people
aren't gonna tell it how it is. Atlanta is the
laughing stock of the NBA. People club other opposing teams
and their fans come here, choose channing MVP when the
opposing team star players at the free throw. I'm not
telling you anything you don't know about. They did a
(20:03):
whole swipe right night to to try to promote what
was it called Tender Night and all this other kind
of stuff to come down here to Phillips Arena, to
State Farm Arena. It's new and ignorant and integrated. We
got plush couches. People are getting married down here. By
the way, there's some kind of little scrimmage five on
(20:24):
five going on down here that we call a basketball game.
But come on out and enjoy networking the night life.
That's what they were selling. They're not far from selling
that all over again. And it leaves a really bad
taste in my mouth. I just don't love the idea,
Gerald and it's just it's really kind of disgusting, even
for people who devote a lot of time to this team,
(20:46):
just covering them on a full time basis. If I'm
just being honest, there really is no telling which direction
that they're going.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
But thank you so much man for having me on.
I appreciate.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Oh whoa, whoa, We're going somewhere else.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
Let everybody know where they can find you. Everything that
you got going on, man, come on now.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
At Tates Take Hoops. Thank you At Tates Take Hoops.
T A T E S t a k E. Hub Ops.
Got a pretty outstanding podcast. It's kind of under construction,
but we're working on it. We gotta try something new,
just like I'm assive for this.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Yeah, I don't even know where my invite. I mean,
I don't know. I mean, I'm getting on a lot
of people.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
I'm calling a lot of people because I got invite
and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
It's all good, it's coming. It's hey, listen, it's on
the way. It was under construction, much like this team
I'm covering. But when we get it back in place,
it's gonna be the best, the most entertaining, the most informational,
and the most educational basketball content on the planet in
the form of a podcast. It's Tates take okay, and
I would love to have you come on join me.
(21:50):
I'm obviously doing some work obviously with a good, uh
very good colleagues of mine over at Locked On Locked
on Hawks, go and follow at Locked on Hawks, or
even more so primarily at Locked on Sports Atlanta. Good
buddy of mine, Jarvis and my postcast host Tanitra Batiz
doing great things covering every single Atlanta Hawks game. After
(22:12):
the game, we're doing the postcast, going live all eighty two,
plus playoffs if we're lucky, and plus doing some really
awesome stuff with my guy Rob Parker Man, who just
literally launched Sports Rap Radio twelve seventy a m. In Detroit,
the very first ever, never been done all black sports
(22:34):
talk radio station. So assisting him in some ways in
terms of being just whatever kind of basketball contributor ambassador.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
I encourage people to check it out.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
So Deshaun Tata is everywhere, and I'm so glad to
be right here in this space with you.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Thanks for sharing it with me.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
Hey man, I appreciate that, and shout out to Rob
and stuff. He's doing tremendous things with Sports Rap Radio Detroit.
And you know, brother, I've always said, you know, I
appreciate your hunger, your drive, continue keep doing that, and
you definitely gotta come on a serious sex Sam.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
I haven't forgot about that. It's all good. Get me up,
take your time.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
No no no, no no no, because you know what,
we gotta talk when there's relevance here around.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
The Atlanta Hall.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
So we gotta make sure we've taken full advantage of
this because it's not that often, but you.
Speaker 5 (23:24):
Just never know.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Patience is a virtue.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
That's the big thing that we're gonna leave it with.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Appreciate you, Deshaunte Heavy into pain,
