Welcome to Hitting Gems Golf, wherewe dig a little bit deeper to find
secret treasure for your betting and DFSpleasure. Yes, baby, Hello all,

(00:22):
I am the Mojo King and thisis episode number seventy five of Hitting
Gems Golf, brought to you bythe My nineteen media group and sponsored by
Sky Golf. Today we are previewingthe WM Phoenix Open being played in Scottsdale,
Arizona. Is Scottsdale a neighborhood inPhoenix or is this one of those
things like the New York Jets andthe Giants really playing New Jersey. Well,

(00:44):
since it's Arizona, I guess I'llhave to give them, my guys
Brad and Tyler a call on thephone and ask them these questions. Or
maybe I could just google it.Speaking of things I might need to search
for, has anyone seen my selectionsfrom last week? Those hidden gems seem
to be hidden from the leaderboard. But I did get one thing one hundred

(01:06):
percent, a thousand percent correct, right on perfect, Just not what I
really wanted. We will get intothose highs and lose in a moment.
But first, what's up, everybody? It's Qualme from the Late Night Lake

(01:53):
We'll see you on the timeline.Enjoy. All right, let's talk
about last week. There was onea high moment which I must remind everybody
I called it. I said, what I found most interesting about the twenty
twenty four Pebble Beach Pro Am wasthe weather. Now, what did I
tell you? When rain and ultimatelya cancelation of the final round of the

(02:15):
tournament, the weather couldn't have beenmore important. I was correct. Unfortunately,
that was all I was correct about. My selections up top were complete
disasters. Xander Shaflet, Victor Holland, and Max Homer were all fifty fourth
or worse. I would be embarrassed, but I don't get paid the big

(02:37):
bucks for picking the right favorites anyway. This is the Hidden Gems podcast.
Yes, and all my gems diddo better than those top picks. Not
much better, but better. Nonetheless, Christian Bozeidenhud tied for twentieth, Maverick
McNeely came in thirty ninth, asdid our catch a falling knife pick Web

(03:00):
Simpson. In a regular tournament,I would definitely take this. All top
forties and a top twenty, butthis was not a regular event. This
was an eighty field player event, mediocre at best. I blame it on
the rain. That was Millie VANOIsong right moving along, all right?

(03:21):
This week we'll be previewing the WMPhoenix Open, being played at TPC Scottsdale.
The stadium course located in Scottsdale,Arizona, which, by the way,
Scottsdale is about twenty minutes drive awayfrom Phoenix. Google Is indeed my
friend. The stadium course was builtin nineteen eighty six by Tom Weiscloth and

(03:42):
J. Merrison and most recently renovatedin twenty fourteen by mister Rycloth. It
is a par seventy one seven twohundred and sixty one yards. The course
features fairways and rough of perennial ryegrassand fine rescue overseed. Meanwhile, the
greens are bermuda grass overseated with poa. To my understanding, the bermuda grass

(04:05):
is still dormant this time of year, so keep that in mind. These
greens lay fast and are pretty flatand have a history of being kind to
traditionally poor putters. Meanwhile, therough is pretty forgivable. This is a
driver heavy horse, but at thesame time they have to be careful not

(04:28):
to spray it you go too far. There's plenty of trouble to get into,
including six holes with porter hazards. There are three part fives, all
are reachable by even short hitters, and one reachable par four. In addition,
there is some elevation here, sothe course plays shorter than the seven
two hundred and sixty one yards. As far as past winners here, last

(04:51):
year with Scotti Scheffler, the yearbefore with Scotty Scheffler, the year before
that, Brooks Koepka twenty twenty,Rep. Sipson twenty nine, eighteen,
Ricky Fowler twenty eighteen, Gary Woodlandtwenty seventeen and sixteen Hitdeki Matsuyama. If
you want to go back one moreyear twenty fifteen, Brooks Koepka. That
trend is not only for the winners. If you look at last year's top

(05:15):
ten, you have Scottie Scheffler surprisingNick Taylor, then John Robb, Justin
Thomas, Jason Day, Sam Burns, Sun Jam Jordan Spieth, Terrell Hatton,
Xander Schoffley. These leaderboards tell usthat the top players dominate the Phoenix
Open and that course history is astrong indicator of future success at this tournament.

(05:36):
As far as comp tournaments, that'sa tough ask. The winners here
have shown some skill at the PlayersChampionship and the US Open. What would
you expect from top players? Also, the US Open doesn't have a steady
course, so it's kind of hardto call that a true comp. What
I'm taking out of it is thatplayers who do well here have to do

(05:59):
well in tough fields. It seemslike they are two styles of players to
have a shot. Guys who couldbully the course with their long game,
but also not make many major mistakes. And guys who are so precise with
their approach play that they can dowell even if they're shorter hitters. This
is the ninety Media Group presentation. All right, let's get to the picks

(06:20):
now. As I told you earlier, I tend to struggle with favorites,
but also, as I've told youearlier, favorites dominate here. So I'm
going to give you my choices. You take them as you will. Of
course, it got a little biteasier as far as trying to figure out
which top you wanted win. VictorHovelin and Xander Shoffley withdrew a little bit

(06:41):
less competition for Scottie Scheffler, thetwo time champion. Can he threepeat?
Of course he can't. He's thenumber on golfer in the world. After
him, I think Justin Thomas isgoing to be a super popular choice,
and I completely agree. Slightly downthe line, I think see Igala has
a shot. As you've heard inprevious podcasts, I like him a lot.

(07:04):
Now, look, the winner ismost likely to come from up top,
but that is totally boring. Solet's dig a little deeper, shall
we, and now your featured presentation. Like my previews the last two years
at this event, I'm only givingtwo long shot names for this event,
really pushing it by looking for longshots anyway. But first up is the

(07:28):
seventy third ranked player in the world, twenty eight year old Aaron Rye.
Now Aaron Rye is not a longhitter, but his approach game is stellar.
I also think he's in for abig year overall. It also helps
that he was nineteenth at the Playersand had a thirty three at the Farmers,
which he remembers a very long course. I think he could play with

(07:50):
the big dogs, and his onehundred and thirty to one price tag is
more than fair. Now dropping furtherdown the line is one hundred and fifteenth
ranked player in the world, thirtyeight year old Scott Stallings. The veteran
has two advantages at this tournament.Number one, outside of a pristine putting

(08:11):
performance at the Farmers, his strengthof game tends to be his approach play
indicator Number two. It's his recentplay here at Scottsdale. I told you
tournament history is important, and hislast three starts here are twenty third twenty
first and thirty sixth. His oddsare two hundred and fifty to one to
win and three to one to topthirty. I think he may be worth

(08:35):
a couple of bucks as far aslong shots go, but generally speaking,
I think I would stick with thefavorites. All Right. That's it,
That's all I got. If you'relooking for an edge in the super Bowl,
please check out Hidden Gems Football.Me and Mike Steph went through all
of super Bowl projections, bets andprops and other thoughts. I appreciate you

(08:58):
all, and I am going andkeep taking
