(01:17):
the Mojo King and this is episodenumber sixty nine. Giggitty of Hidden Gems
Golf brought to you by the Mightynineteen Media group and sponsored by Sky Golf.
This week we'll be discussing the WindhamChampionship being played in North Carolina.
The Windham Championship, as I'm suremany of you know, is the last
event before the FedEx Playoffs. Playersare jockey They try to get into the
(01:40):
top seventy so they could continue theirseason next week, and there are some
interesting names on the outside looking inat the moment, including Gary Woodland,
Adam Scott, Shane Lowry, andJustin Thomas. All of them are playing
this week. In addition to that, with the upcoming changes to pea season,
breaking into the top fifty and theFedEx points total is huge. That
(02:06):
is the primary way for a golferto be locked in on next season's designated
events. Those events will be nocut, which means guaranteed money, good
money for the best of the best, and life changing for the guys who
are able to sneak in there.Now. I'm not digging too deep into
the playoffs this week, but Iassure you golfers themselves know exactly where they
(02:29):
stand and what they need to doto continue playing. Now those things will
have absolutely zero effect on my hittingGem selections. Me I have a whole
different angle to look at her.But before we get into that, let's
discuss last week's results. The threeM Open was an odd event for me
and I think for most folks.Tony Fenwe finished in seventh place, and
(02:52):
that was pretty much it for thefavorites. My favorite favorite was Cam Young
and he missed the cut, butthe three hit Gem selections, including the
Falling Knife selection Trey Monix, allmade the cut. Unfortunately, Monix and
m J mcduffy didn't do much aftermaking the cut, coming in fifty and
forty third respectively. That other hiddenGem, Garrett Higgo, did us proud,
(03:15):
finishing in a tie for thirteenth infantasy. With the leaderboard being so
wild, getting four out of sixthrough the cut wasn't enough to cash,
and if you had the right fourand you were in the right contest,
you were in position to contend.A weird week. Indeed, this is
the nineteen Media Group presentation. Allright, This week we're previewing the Windham
(03:35):
Championship being played at Sedgefield Country Clubin Greensboro, North Carolina. Sedgefield Country
Club was designed by Donald Ross backinto nineteen twenty six and was renovated most
recently by Chris Spent in two thousandand seven. This tournament's roots go all
the way back to nineteen thirty eight. Back then the tournament was called the
Greater Greensboro Open. This tournament movedto Sedgefield in two thousand and eight and
(03:59):
has been there ever since. Sedgefieldis a par seventy seven thou one hundred
and thirty one yards, The greens, fairways rough, and everything else are
all Bermuda grass. Unlike last week, water isn't a constant fear here,
as it is in play in onlysix of eighteen holes. The courses fairways
are thin and tree line, andthe greens are fast. Biggest thing to
(04:20):
note about Sedgefield is it is short. Bombers have zero advantage year. In
fact, looking at the leaderboards, length almost looks like a disadvantage. Precision
is the key at the Windham Championship, as it is brains over braun this
week. Last year, Tom Kimcrushed the field, winning at twenty under
(04:42):
sun jam and John Hat followed himfive strokes. Be high in twenty twenty
one, Kevin Kisner one in asix way playoff at fifteen under. Brendan
Grace, Roger Sloan, Kevin nahAdam Scott, and Seawoo Kim all tied
for second. In twenty twenty,Jim Herman shocked the world twenty one under,
defeating Billy Horschell by one. Fourplayers came in third, including Kevin
(05:04):
Kisner in Seewoo Kim. In twentynineteen, JT post and defeated Webb Simpson,
Seewoo Kim, Son Jam and BillyHorschell all came in the top six
in the leaderboard that year as well. What does all of this tell us,
Well, quite a bit. One, it shows that course history seems
to be one of the more consistentthings here. If you do well here,
(05:29):
you're gonna keep doing well here mostlikely, And if you struggle here,
you'll probably keep struggling. Two.As I said earlier, this is
a short hitters haven look at allthose names I listed. Thirdly, it's
thirdly a word Well, it shouldbe noted that we should expect bunched up
leaderboards with both favorites and long shotsamong the players jockey and four position.
(05:51):
A scenario like that, my friends, is exactly what Hidden Gems Golf is
all about. Yo, it's thekid Desmond Pole host to Hip to the
Games where the brilliance of basketball andhip hop's past and present is genuinely appreciated.
And you're listening to hip hop HiddenGems and we are a part of
the nineteen media group family with thesame players being consistently well here. Comp
(06:13):
tournaments should tell us a lot.And I got to say the two tournaments
that I am looking closest at arethe Sony Open and RBC Heritage. One
last thing, the recent courses onthe tour have been very different from Sedgefield.
Long and difficult is not what thistournament is about. So I won't
be afraid to grab a player ortwo who has struggled as of late.
(06:35):
There will be players who break thechains of recent history this week. All
right. There is no clear favoriteup top, but I'd say the top
eight or so all seem to havea legit shot. Case you're wondering who
is the ninth golfer and the list, that would be Shane Lowry. I
don't think he has much of ashot, as he's only had one top
(06:56):
twenty here in five attempts. Watchhim go out and win now. But
I'm not Bettam. If I wasto select one up here, I would
be selecting Russell Henley, who's hadthree straight top tens at this event and
has been on fire as of late. His game seems to be made for
this tournament, a tier below thosetop choices. I have a good deal
of interest in Kim Davis, TylerMoore, and Brendan Todd. But let's
(07:21):
dig deeper, shall we, andnow your featured presentation. First up,
we have one hundred and thirteen frankplayer in the world, twenty seven year
old Ben Griffin. Some of youmay remember how good Griffin was earlier this
season, missing only one of hisfirst sixteen cuts, while he also topped
(07:41):
twenty and three of those events, highlighted by a third at the Bermuda Championship
and a twelfth at the Sony Open. His results dipped after that hot start,
but he seemedly bounced back as oflate. The final piece of what
I like about Ben Griffin is hisresults here last year, which was a
tie for four. In twenty twentytwo, he was in terrible for him
(08:03):
when he came to Sedgefield, andstill top five. I think he's a
better golfer today, and he's certainlybeen playing better as of late. I
really like him this week, allright. Digging further down into the depths
for US final two selections, upnext is the hundred seventy frank player in
the world, twenty six year oldcall Un. Let's just say Yuan has
(08:24):
had a rough rookie season on thetour, missing fifteen of twenty three scuts.
His best start of the season backin January was a twenty first at
my favorite tournament, the Sony Open. Looking further back than that, Yuan
was very strong on the corn FerryTour with nine top tens. Now,
(08:46):
I have to admit, statistically speaking, he is not a perfect fit,
as his resume screams long and inaccurate, which is quite not what we need
this week. But I think hewill be fine on this course because as
he's forced to dial it back. And finally, let's try to catch a
falling knife with the three hundred andtwenty eighth ranked player in the world,
(09:09):
forty nine year old Cameron Percy.Look, I'm not going to try to
oversell the Aussie. He has notbeen good as of late. In fact,
he's only top fiftieth or better oncein his last eight events, but
there is no denying his strength atthe Windham Championship. At this event,
he's end up in the top fortyand five of his last six times here,
(09:33):
including an eighth last year. Now, I don't expect the top ten
from him this year at all,but that top forty, I think he
has a shot at that. Alongthose same lines, even though not an
official pick, I have Brian Stewartthere as well. My only problem with
him was that he's been terrible allseason. I don't have as much faith
in. But he's the bare minimumand DraftKings. So if you have to
(09:56):
force somebody in Brian Stewart, maybeyour aunts there. All right, that's
it, That's all I got.And as always, if you're golfing,
you should definitely take a look atSky Golf. They have some great equipment
that will help your game. Iappreciate you all, and keep keep digging.
(10:39):
Okay, So keep digging, digging, keeping, keep digging, keeping
like a million times, keep diggingin and then you'll find treasure in the
snow. You know it's recording youraudio not You're not You're dancing. I
know, did Igna did anything, did I did? Keep digging, Oh
(11:13):
my goodness.
