Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm here to say that I don't think the situation
is as bad as people think. Jonathan Kaminga is not
a Golden State Warrior when he gets to basketball, he
is not a Golden State Warrior. He is trying out
for the other twenty nine teams in the league. You
don't get you don't go get Paul George, and you
don't try to continue to empower Tyrese Maxi by forcing
mb to still be dropping thirty like. I don't think
(00:23):
that's the point anymore so. If he can bridge Giannis
and basically Kevin Durant together, the league is in trouble.

rating and review on audio platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts,
so we can continue to grow the H two DG family.
But in the meantime, as the NBA regular season is
right around the corner, I wanted to share some of
my thoughts on five different scenarios that have caught my
(02:10):
eye within the last week or so, and our storylines
I'm going to keep a close eye on as the
season progresses and getting right into it. The first scenario
is down in Houston as they are set to play
this season without their lead point guard, Fred van Fleet,
who will be recovering from an ACL tear suffered this offseason.
Of course, I send my prayers and well wishes to
(02:30):
Fred for a patient and complete recovery. Absolutely news that
neither he or the Rockets wanted to hear heading into
the season where they have filled a lot of the
holes that they had the past season, and this situation
has had people wondering what does this exactly mean for
their season? What does it mean for their point guard rotation?
Because they have a lot of working pieces, a lot
(02:52):
of talent at that position, and now the question becomes,
how is this team going to perform without their lead guard.
I'm here to say that I don't think the situation
is as bad as people think. I don't think it's
as dire as people have looked at it the past
couple of weeks, and so as I think about the
Houston Rockets point guard situation. The first thing that popped
(03:13):
in my head was that they essentially have Fred van
Fleet in two different players, Aaron Holliday and Reed Shephard. Right,
Aaron Holliday, you have more of the Fred van Fleet's stature,
the strength, the size, the shooting ability, and the defense,
while Reed Shepherd has more of that scoring streak that
Fred van Fleet tends to show a lot of times.
You know, I don't want people to forget if you
(03:34):
watched last year's playoffs, the reason why that series opened
up for the Rockets the way that it did versus
the Golden State Warriors was because Fred van Fleet, at
five eleven six foot however tall he is, decided that
I'm gonna be the one to take over this game.
I'm gonna be the one to open the scoring opportunities. Right,
Everybody thought it was gonna be Jalen Green. You know,
(03:55):
you might even thought it could have been somebody like
Jabari Smith. But at the end of the day, Fred
van Fleet, the shortest on the court, was the one
who said, Hey, I'm gonna get us and keep us
in these games. And if it wasn't for his aggression,
you know, if it wasn't for him channel channeling his
inner Allen Iverson, if you will, right, that hard over
height kind of scoring streak, the Rockets series would have
(04:16):
been even worse than I think it was. So I
think that right now with Aaron, I think a lot
of people are forgetting that Aaron Holliday is on this roster.
Like there are still guys on this Houston Rockets team
that have in some way or of another, you know,
at some point or another, showed that they can play
and make good contributions to this basketball team. And I
think with Aaron Holliday, again, he doesn't jump out the page, right,
(04:38):
Like when you think about all the Holiday brothers, Right,
everybody looks at Drew as the All Star, the champion,
the All NBAS defender, right is probably going to retire
and be known as one of the greatest defenders of
his era. But like you look at a guy like
Justin Holliday, right, he played for my Bulls at one
point in time, and I think a lot of us
(04:58):
liked him while he he he didn't necessarily always jump
off the page. We liked him because he played hard.
And I think it's really the same thing with Aaron Holliday, right, Like, yes,
he's often the smallest guy on the court, but he
plays hard. He plays hard on defense, he plays hard
on offense. I know there's been some critiques of him
maybe doing a little too much on offense, right, But
I said this last year on our playoff preview, Aaron
(05:20):
Holliday was one of the best three point shooters on
the Houston Rockets roster, and unfortunately he just wasn't always
getting the minutes to contribute in that way. A team
that desperately needed spot up shooting didn't have it like
their best spot up shooters, Aaron Holliday. I think there
was somebody else that I'm not thinking of, but there
were guys that were among the top of the team
in three point percentage and they just didn't get a
(05:42):
lot of minutes. So I think you look at this
team that's like you can you can feel Fred's holes
in different players, right, I think Aaron Holliday can step
up in that way. I think Reed Shephard right, if
I'm going on this segue, read Shepherd. This is a
huge opportunity for Reed Shepherd, right. He was already coming
into a season where he had a huge opportunity, opportunity
to show what he could with their guard depth and
guard rotation. But now it's even bigger because they won't
(06:04):
have Fred van Fleet and Reed Shepherd actually has the
chance to earn a starting spot. Like, let's be real,
I think that should be his goal this year, to
earn the starting point guard position for the Houston Rockets.
Because while I'm usually against it, right, if you listen
to the show, you know that I'm usually against this,
but read Shepherd in this case, in the event that
Fred van Fleet is injured. This is an example of
(06:27):
why teams actually do draft the best available players, no
matter what their roster looks like. Right, I've always been
of the notion that when it comes to the NBA draft,
you need to draft what you need, especially in the
NBA that's already so deep that that every team's got
a deep roster, even the bad teams have depth. You
need to get what you need. You don't always draft
the best player, because again we saw this from Reed
(06:49):
Shepherd last year. There's gonna be nights he's just gonna
be riding the bench to the He's a top three
pick and he's riding the bench. Like in my lifetime.
That has never been a thing. Top three picks don't
ride the bench unless they just prove to be what
people would call busts. Right, but Read Shepherd, right, they
send him to the G League. I believe it was
(07:10):
like two or three games and they just you had
to call him back up because it's this dude is
too good to be in the G league. He's too
good to go through the farm system. He was a
number three pick for a reason. You have to find
room to play for him. It should not be like
the NFL, where you draft three of the best quarterbacks
the last three years and now they're all on this
(07:31):
rotation to where it's like Domino's the starter gets injured,
the second string has to get injured just for the
third guy to show that he is a capable quarterback
in this league. That's kind of what we're seeing in
the NBA now. And I think this opportunity allows Reed
Shepherd to do that. And I think even for Fred
van Fleet when he comes back, let's say Read Shepherd
really balls out, he might be able to say, like, okay,
(07:51):
you know what, I'm getting into my thirties now, like hey,
I can be a nice backup veteran like it's cool,
it'll help me gradually return for my injury, and I
can help the young fell out like I'm not here
to be selfish and just get my starting spot back
just because of pride and ego, Like no, I see
the direction the way the team is going. I see
the direction that the team is going in, and if
(08:12):
it helps us win games, let's do it, you know.
And I think again, it's a huge opportunity for Read
Shepherd to show what he can do. We know he
can score with the best of them. He has that knack.
A lot of people compared him to Steve Nash. He
has similar movements, similar iq I would say scoring in close.
I think we're gonna see if his three point shot
can be more consistent this year. But again, I'm sure
(08:34):
he's looking at this wide eye like okay, let's get it.
But it also begs the question on this side of things, right,
this must mean that we're also going to see point
guard Amn Thompson. And if you look at a men
Thompson on Basketball Reference, he's listed as a small forward. Obviously,
I think a lot of us we've seen him play
the two, and we've seen him take a lot of
point guard responsibilities as a primary initiator and tempo pusher,
(08:57):
if you will. And I think it's interesting. I think,
you know, I'm of the notion that it's gonna be
absolutely amazing to see a men Thompson have the ball more,
especially after what he showed this past season. But it
also makes me think of how that's gonna work with
the Rockets rotation, right because they already had a little
bit of a thinner guard rotation and and they're like
(09:18):
very likely gonna play bigger lineups this year, even if
fred Vanfleet was healthy. I really think the Rockets were
due to play a lot of bigger lineups this year.
So you anticipate that the starting lineup is gonna be
a men Thompson, you got, I'm sorry, that's my version.
I kind of want to go with Amn Thompson, Tarry
East and Dorian Finney Smith, Kevin Durant, alper and Sangoon.
(09:40):
Most people are saying Amen Thompson, Tarry East and Kevin Durant,
Jabari Smith Junior and Alpera and Sangoon, And that's all understandable, right,
Like I think it's it's it's best for what the
cards that they've been dealt. I think that Jabari Smith
is more than capable of starting in this league. I
think he's been due to show that he can be
(10:00):
a force in this league. But my thing is, when
they first got Kevin Durant, Like, the way my mind
works is that you should be okay with having Kevin
Durant start and having technically Kevin Durant Junior coming off
the bench in Jabari Smith. So that way, no matter
who's on the floor, you have a six' ten guy
that can score at all three levels on the basketball. Floor,
(10:21):
now of course they can still make that happen with
Starting Kevin durant And Jabari smith, Right, like they can
stagger those. Guys they don't have to play together all the.
Time just because they start doesn't mean they always have
to be on the floor. Together you can always Stagger
Kevin durant with the. Bench you can always Stagger Jabari
Smith junior with the. Bench, like there's so many combinations
that Im rudoka can. Use but my thing, is we
(10:41):
get so obsessed about these bigger lineups and we're, like,
oh it's nice to have like an all six to
seven plus, lineup and that looks really, cool you, know
it's really. Fun BUT i just, think, like at the
end of the, day you need guys with other skill
sets on the. FLOOR i really think that's becoming cool
again in THE. Nba and it just makes me, question,
like Should Jabari Smith junior? START i think for a
(11:03):
lot of people it's easy. Yes but, me you, KNOW
i usually go against the grain a lot of, times you,
know BUT i just have been wondering, that, like is
it always gonna make sense to Keep Jabari smith on
the floor With Kevin Durant And and, Honestly i'm cool
with it if it means That Jabari smith is actually
gonna get more minutes Without Kevin durant than with he
(11:25):
is than than he will With Kevin. Durant that's the
scenario WHERE i would, say, yes he should. Start if
you're gonna if Ema udoka is going to keep them,
Staggered i'm cool with. It but if, NOT i just.
DON'T i don't know IF i like to that that
those two guys who are so similar on a basic
level on the floor at the same, time for for
(11:46):
for strenuous minutes throughout the. Game AND i might AND
i could be. Wrong, again it's very well possible That i'm.
Wrong i'm, wrong and it could be the best thing
for The Houston, rockets, Right BUT i just think in
the grand scheme of, things you gotta just diverse a
a little, bit and you, know play with different lineups
and make sure you're getting because the last thing The
rockets want to do is, have you, know find a
(12:09):
way to make a really good starting, five have a
really good, defense but when that bench comes, in they
struggle to. Score that's the last thing you. Want, like
if you're a team that can be as great defensively
as The rockets can, be the last thing you want
to do is have those games where y'all drop thirty
in the first, quarter but then you scored fourteen fifteen
in the. Second, right you just cannot score when you're
(12:31):
When Kevin durant And Jabari smith and whoever is out.
There So i'm interested to see how The rockets deal
with this. Situation LIKE i, SAID i think point guard
and Man thompson is probably what's going to be the
best thing for his. Career when him and his brother
got drafted AND i was seeing them play their rookie,
SEASONS i was just immediately, like, yeah like these kids
are Like Andrea. Goodala and AGAIN i KNOW i always
(12:52):
throw that name out Because iggy is my. Guy but
as far as guys who just make the right plays
on the basketball, floor no matter who they're, with if
that to me is who they've, been SO i Think Amen,
thompson you know he'll open up the game For Kevin
durant and other. Guys. Uh but with his with his downhill,
ability being able to tack, downhill attack and, transition be
(13:12):
aggressive as a. Slasher but Again i've been saying it all.
Offseason the biggest thing with a Man, thompson if this
is what your role is gonna, be you need to
knock down to catch and shoot. Three you Needed you're
gonna need to be able to knock, down catching shoot.
Three is Off Kevin durant double teams and whatnot Or
Alprin sangun double, teams because that's the. Thing if this
becomes a thing where teams are gladly leaving the Men
(13:32):
thompson and and they're just they have no problems leaving
him wide. Open and now again the three point the
spot up three point shooting becomes another flaw for this team,
again you know you you're gonna, Work you're gonna think about,
That you're gonna reconsider how these lineups are gonna. Be
and LIKE i, said that's WHY i Think Reed shepherd
comes into. Play that's WHERE i Think Aaron holliday comes into,
play just that you have more sure uh shooting out
(13:56):
on the perimeter with these. Lineups so, yeah in a,
NUTSHELL i don't think The rockets point guard situation is that.
BAD i do think it's very. Interesting you, know right,
Now Amen thompson's got an awesome opportunity to show the
superstar he can be in this, league While Reed shepard
can also show why he was the third pick in
the draft and why he can be a force in this.
League so it's a lot of. Opportunity opportunity is knocking
(14:18):
for a lot of guys on The Houston, rockets and
we will see how that. Goes you. KNOW i, Again
i'm still very high on this. TEAM i still see
them being around the second third spot in The. West but,
again not having their guy and their floor general and
THERE i think somebody who was always vocal in the locker,
ROOM i think not having him on the floor is
gonna be a little d you, know it's gonna hurt some,
(14:39):
games but, again it's a great opportunity for these young
guys to show what they can. Do the next SCENARIO
i have for you is The Golden State, Warriors, right
SO i want to talk a little bit About Al.
HORFORD i want to talk a little bit About Jonathan,
kaminga and just kind of the roster in. General so first,
OFF i, mean let's let's start With Al, horford, Right,
like this guy has been on their radar all off.
SEASON i think he. Is he was the ideal pick
(15:02):
even at his. Age he's going to be thirty nine
years old this. Season so it's, LIKE i think that's
the thing with The Golden State, warriors. Right the funny
thing is they're competing with The clippers for the most unction,
roster as the young mens, say, right like they got
the oldest guys in the league all on one. Team pretty.
Much but, yeah, MAN i love it For Golden state because,
(15:23):
HONESTLY i was of the notion that they should have
went After Nicola. Vucevich, right The Golden State warriors needed
somebody a center who could do the following. Things they'll
fit with The Golden State warriors read and react offense.
Right they can set screens For, steph set screens for,
shooters and make unselfish passes, right so they fit with the.
(15:43):
Offense they can pass off the, post they can score
in the, post. Right because my thing is The warriors
the last few seasons have had big men who are
always going to pass out the, post and to, me
their offense gets so predictable when that. Happens when you
run those split actions that The warriors love to, run
they'll throw it Into, draymond they'll throw it Into Kevon,
(16:03):
looney whoever it, was and they'll Let steph or whoever
come around top off ball screen for an open. Three
it's not as much of a threat as it could
be Because draymond can't fake and spin out in the
post and get an easy. Layup. Right Kevon looney was
not doing. That every time that ball went into the,
post you're looking At steph or you're looking At Buddy.
(16:24):
Healed you know somebody's coming Because draymond's not gonna score
on the. Post Kevon looney's not gonna score on the.
Post SO i think getting somebody Like Al horford allows
them to do. That Because Al, horford even at his
older age and somebody who can still score on the.
Block that's always for his entire, career even when he
was In. Florida, Right that's Why Al horford was one
of the top picks in the draft because that's what he.
(16:46):
Did old school. Guy The warriors needed. That so Now Al,
horford he's over the, years he's developed such a skill. Set,
again he's an all star caliber. Guy. Right he can,
pass he can pass out the. Post he improved his,
playmaking he can, rebound he can. Defend even at thirty
in his late, thirties he's sliding his feet With lebron
And Luka. Doncics, right he's. Strong like this dude is pretty. Rare,
(17:09):
again we're seeing what the new age oldhead looks like. Nowadays,
Right like WHEN i was a kid And i'm growing
up watching THE, nba you, know shoot thirty eight and
thirty nine year, olds they were not playing that. Much
if you were thirty eight and thirty nine playing in THE,
nba you were a. Shooter, Right so it's like now
we're just seeing what it's just different now and it's
beautiful to. See AND i think again he is the
he was it made sense why he's the ideal pick
(17:30):
For Golden, state AND i would love to see, them
especially in those split, actions get him the basketball and
allow him to pick and, choose, like, hey while the
defense is waiting On steph to come, around MAYBE i
can spin out the post and get easy. Layup so
now the next time we run that split, action, oh
now the defense has two things to watch out, For like,
dang Al horford can score down, here but we also
(17:50):
gotta Watch. Steff you gotta make the defense pick their.
Poison SO i Think Al horford definitely gives them the
opportunity to do that this, year And i'm excited for. That,
again he's a great. Veteran he's he's been on winning,
teams he's been a. Champion he knows what it's like
man that anytime you can add a guy like, that
and and he's still effective at what he. Does like The,
warriors it's it's great that they're gonna have. Him he
(18:12):
can stretch the, floor, RIGHT i don't even THINK i
mentioned that. Yet he could shoot the, three he could
shoot THE midi, like he's gonna fit great in that.
Offense SO i love to pick Up THEN i want
to talk About Jonathan, kaminga, right Because Jonathan kminga's. Back
they signed. Him you, know he's back for now at. Least.
Uh But i'm curious to know if The warriors and
Even Jonathan kminga's approach changed in this. Situation. RIGHT i
(18:33):
Think i've been saying it all off. Season The warriors
they don't Want Jonathan kaminga the proper, now they want
somebody Like Jonathan, kaminga, Right and they're settling because they
just can't seem to find a deal that works best
for both, sides and and and what what what annoyed
me about this process was that you kept you kept
seeing that The warriors wanted to Trade Jonathan, kaminga but
(18:56):
in return they wanted they were, like oh, yeah we
want somebody with star. Potential we want somebody a little,
younger we want somebody that's about six. Seven and it's,
like you're literally Describing Jonathan, Kaminga. Right it just tells
me you don't Want john Thank. Aminga you Want john
Think minga in the form of somebody. Else and SO
i think everybody's, settling, right Even Johnathan. Kaminga the problem
(19:18):
With john Thank aminga as A Golden State. Warrior is
that this brother gets the basketball and he gets his
He Johnathan. Kaminga what scares me about him still being
A warrior is the fact That Johnathank kaminga is not
A Golden State. Warrior when he gets the, basketball he
is not A Golden State. Warrior he is trying out
for the other twenty nine teams in the. League is
(19:39):
that it's clear as day every time he touches the,
basketball it's about. Him he's trying to play for the other.
Teams he's trying to get a contract for somebody with somebody. Else,
right The Golden State warriors are able to tolerate it
because he's such a talented. Kid, right he is your
prototypical wing. Nowadays he can, score he's. Aggressive we've seen it.
(20:00):
Before we saw in the playoffs When steph was, Out
Jonathan kaminga stepped up. Majorly why because he didn't have
to worry about being stuck to The Stephan curry. System
he needed to go somewhere where he can blossom and truly.
Be like LIKE i said in the, offseason that brother
needs to go to The kings or The. Wizards he
just needs to go to a bad team so he
can get his because that's all he wants to do
at this stage in his. Career he wants to show
(20:21):
everybody that he can be An All. Star and that's,
great that is great, Ambition but to be A Golden
State warrior and to win with The, warriors he's got
to sacrifice a little bit and he's got to be
willing to buy. In and players talk about, that. RIGHT
i don't know IF i mentioned it, before But Eric
pascal he admitted that was his problem with The. Warriors
he was a scorer and they're asking him to basically
play The draymond role and he didn't want, to and
(20:43):
that is why he got traded to The Utah. Jazz
if you're not gonna buy in to The Golden State
warriors basketball and their, system you are not going to.
Thrive so part of me is LIKE i likes a
lot of the offseason acquisitions that they, made But i'm just, like,
man you still Have Jonathan kaminga and is this brother
going to be willing to buy? In and even The
(21:04):
warriors they're kind of sitting here like we'll shoot at
least nobody else has, them and it's just, like, dude
nobody knows what they, want you, know and like even
not NOT i thought they could have got My League.
Monk but at the same, time, right Maligue monk is
in six, Seven, Right he's not a wing that can
guard somebody like A lebron or A luca Or Kevin. Durant.
Right like, again that's why they're Keeping john Think aminga
(21:26):
because they know what they. Got they just don't like
how he fits with the. System so, yeah, Man I'm
i'm very interested to see How john Thank aminga plays this.
Year i'm very interested to see what The warriors do
with him as this is this is probably gonna be
his last year with the. Team you, know we'll see
how it. GOES i think he can certainly be a
great piece if they're trying to do a very last,
(21:47):
dance Last hurrah kind of playoff run, again, Right LIKE
i think, Again now you look At Stephen curry's, brother,
Right Seth curry is now part of the. Fold they
got back Anthonyd Anthony. Melton and these are actually two
points THAT i really want to stress. ON i think
it's really cool that The Golden State warriors managed to
get they reacquired The Anthony melton in the offseason and
(22:09):
still managed to Keep Gary. Payton there was a point
in time where you didn't know if that was going
to be a, possibility but it. Happened and then you
bring In Seth, curry right where this is this full circle.
Moment you, KNOW i don't know if a lot of people,
remember but if you, do you remember that When Seth
curry was trying to get into THE, nba he was
coming out Of duke and he was the, sharpshooter, right
but he was known As Stephan curry's, brother and he's
(22:31):
bouncing around. Teams he's in and out THE G league
or well at the, time it was THE D, league
and he had a stint with The. Warriors. Right it
was really cool because you Had Stephan clay in THE
nba team and then you Had seth And clay's brother
on The Santa Cruz warriors for THE D. League so
it was really, cool like there was a window Where
seth at that time could have been A Golden State,
(22:53):
warrior but again it just didn't pan out that, way
and eventually he found his way in THE nba through
other teams Like Sacramento Dall. Again Eventually Brooklyn philly other,
teams and now you have this full circle moment where
like If I'm Steph, Curry i'm, like, YO i got
to get my brother a, ring like like this is my,
boy you, know like he had he had to root for,
me and, SHOOT i had to beat him in The
(23:14):
Western conference finals end route to trying to get a.
Championship you know we lost that, year but you KNOW
i had to beat my brother in the midst of our.
Heyday so like now we get to wear the same colors,
finally and it's a full circle. Moment seth is actually good, enough,
right and he has his veteran credit to be on
this team and fit with this team and. Everything so
it's nice That steph gets to play with his blood splash, brother,
(23:38):
Right SO i love that and and and LIKE i,
SAID i think getting back The Anthony melton and Keeping
Gary payton is a lot better than what it looks
like on. PAPER i know those are more shorter, guards,
Right these guys are like six to, two but they,
Defend and especially D Anthony, Melton he's always been an
all around. Guard even back In, memphis he was just
that was his that was his, job be his secondary,
(24:00):
handler be a combo, guard shoot the, three lock up on.
Defense like having these, guys, Man i'm so excited for
that because to, me that was one of the reasons
why The Golden State warriors had such a hot start last.
YEAR i thought D Anthony melton was the call me,
crazy BUT i thought D Anthony milton was the reason
Why Golden state was where they Were BECAUSE i said this,
(24:20):
before it was when they Had Dante. DiVincenzo it was
when they Had Andre. Goodala you need somebody that can
play different positions on the, floor that can play With
steph And, dremond that can shoot the three and lock.
Up if you can check all those, boxes you will
have no problems fitting in The Golden State warriors. Rotation
and D Anthony melton was the next iteration of that
kind of basketball. Player so to keep him and still
(24:41):
have the Beloved Gary, payton who does a lot of
the same, things not so much on, offense but still
serves as a great, cutter great in the dunker, spot
great as a love, threat can knock down the occasional,
three like obviously he's gonna lock. UP i love what The.
Warriors you, know it's very subtle, acquisitions BUT i love
what they got this. Year I'm i'm really hoping that
(25:01):
their second unit is a lot better this year because
that's gonna help them win a lot more basketball games this,
year which in some ways is scary considering how they
played After february, eighth twenty twenty. Five so, yeah The,
Warriors i'm not going crazy with, them but LIKE i
said in two episodes, AGO i really do think, that
like they, can they have the roster to be a
(25:24):
top five team Out. West but the thing, is you, know,
injuries and and and and you know how they how
they how that second unit, looks how they play Without Steph.
Curry lots of different factors. There BUT i do like
what this team. Did LIKE i, said my big thing
though Is Johnathan. Kamingo we will have to see how
that scenario, goes all. Right another TEAM i got from
my third scenario is The philadelphia seventy six, Ers and
(25:46):
SPECIFICALLY i want to shout OUT. Vj Edgecombe AND i
know this is around the time of year we tend
to overreact over over the, preseason and uh, yeah your
boy is doing. THAT i am here to SAY i
am overreacting over. PRESEASON i am here to admit that
because it may just be, preseason BUT. Vj edgecomb has
looked every bit Of Anthony edwards's little, BROTHER i, Mean
duncan all over the. Knicks he's playing with high, energy and,
(26:10):
HONESTLY i thought this kid was a slasher who could
defend this. Dude he's hitting jab step three, pointers he's
getting to his, spots he's playmaking for Others LIKE. Vj
edgecomb is a lot better THAN i thought he was
going to. Be and now it makes it makes me
question though it looks very clear that WHILE i Was
(26:30):
i'm a Big jared McCain, fan it seems to be
very clear THAT. Vj edgecomb needs to start at the
two guard for this. Team and it makes me wonder
how IS vj gonna fit with maxipg And joel embiid
all at the same, time because you can see that
that youthful energy IN. Vj edgecomb, right like he wants
to get, It like you can just see. It he
has that youthful hop in his step where he's, Like
(26:53):
i'm trying to show people That i'm here And i'm for, real,
Right it's the same thing D wade had as a
young and it's the same. Thing And edwards came in
with when he was a, rookie just that no fear,
energy LIKE i am going to take. It i'm not
letting anyone give anything to. ME i don't care what
PICK i was in the. DRAFT i have to show.
You and he's come with that. Energy and the thing
(27:15):
is that's going to have to change when you're out
there With maxi And mbid who needs the ball in the,
post And Paul, george who is expected to fill in
when those guys can't, score, Right it's gonna be a lot.
DIFFERENT vj isn't always gonna be the one with the,
ball so Like i'm anxious to see how he bridges
the what we've seen in the, preseason but what he
(27:37):
does with the healthy. Roster because when you look at
The Philadelphia, sixers my main thing is. This they have.
Depth they have incredible depth when you look at. It
but at the same, time the stars need to, score.
RIGHT i, think like WHEN i watched the seventy six
ers last year and WHEN i study their, roster LIKE i,
(27:59):
said it makes sense why they want to play. Selfless
LIKE i, Said Paul george has always been a guy
the lot ever since he's been A. Clipper it matured
him to play the game the right. Way. Right it
was a reason Why Paul george never you, know he
wasn't always the guy averaging twenty six to twenty seven
points a game because when you watch, him you realize
he wants to play the game the right. WAY i
see the same thing As Kevin durant that that could
be a podcast within. Itself but and AGAIN i think
(28:22):
the same thing With Maxi Maxi. Tyrese maxie is not
a true point. Guard he's very much a dynamic, scorer
but he, does like you, know getting his teammates. Involved
he isn't necessarily the best at it compared to other
guys in his, position but it's something that he. ACKNOWLEDGES
i think other guys on that, team, Right, like LIKE i, SAID.
Vj edgecomb has already shown that. ABILITY i Thought jerreed
McCain was really good in that. Role you. Know it
(28:44):
was just a very selfless, group. Right and the thing,
IS i think The sixers when it comes to these
injuries and then with this selfless, basketball they do struggle to.
Score there are a lot of MOMENTS i saw last
year where they struggle to. Score and then even this
year in the preseason they had their moments where they
struggle to. Score and again that's where it comes In
Paul George, Tyres Max Joel. Embiid at the end of the,
(29:06):
day you can have all the depth in the, world
but your stars need to be. Stars And i've compared
This sixers roster the last season and this. SEASON i
really think they want to mirror the roster that they
had in twenty nineteen right where they almost if it
wasn't For Kawhi, leonard they would have made the conference.
Finals AND i think the reason why that works is
(29:30):
because you had a dynamic point, guard you had your,
post your dominant post, player and you had somebody on
the wing that could. Score right in twenty, nineteen you
Had Ben, simmons you HAD Jj reddick as a. Sharpshooter
you Had Jimmy butler that year where he was Again
Jimmy butler's always been a guy where it's, Like, hey
if you need me to drop, Thirty i'll do. It
but my ROLE i can get you seventeen five and
(29:51):
five and will be. Great i'm locking up on the.
Wings boom we throw it to mb down. Low we
Got Tobias, harris who we could throw it in the mid.
Post we got. Options as long as we are all
recognizing what we need from each other on a night
to night, basis there should be no reason why we
can't contend in this. League AND i think it's the same.
Thing you look At Tyves, max you can get twenty
six in his, sleep like you look At Paul, george
who at his best should be a twenty point per game.
(30:13):
Score and somebody who can get in the passing lanes on,
defense you, know play solid, defense get, rebounds you, know
rebounds his position well any and again somebody who's grown
as a. Playmaker you look At Joel, embiid dominant post. Player.
Right you got guys like high energy, Guys Kelly oubrey
now Vj, Edgecombe jerry McCain win healthy is a really
(30:33):
nice spot up. Shooter somebody who moves off the ball.
Well Eric, gordon even at his, age still a three point. Threat,
right you have to close out on. Him it's a
Lot Andre, drummond great. Rebounder. Right so there's a lot going,
on but you need your stars to be. Stars AND
i think the problem With philly and EVEN i think
with some of the fan base expects is that they
(30:54):
WANT mb to get back in that mode WHERE i
guess he's THIS mvp caliber. Player and my thing, IS
i don't think that's the point with this. ROSTER i
don't think that's why you go Get Paul. George you
don't get you don't go Get Paul, george and you
don't try to continue to Empower Tyrese maxi by FORCING
mb to still be dropping Thirty, LIKE i don't think
(31:16):
that's the point, Anymore JOEL mbi should not be doing
everything in his power to drop thirty points a game
and carry this team to the. Playoffs that's not the point.
Anymore it's to supplement this depth with his star power
and get deeper playoff runs with the depth that they.
Have and so WHEN i look at this, team it's
LIKE i, SAID i Think maxi needs to be on his.
(31:37):
STUFF i THINK mb needs to be on his, stuff
and quite quite, FRANKLY i think he needs to stop
playing in the mid. RANGE i think he needs to
bring it out on a very if necessary. BASIS i
really think he needs to stick his button to paint
and be dominant because the all him wanting to be,
this you, know want to Be Carmelo anthony and, whatnot
Like James harden hybrid at seven foot two eighty, like
(31:58):
he can't be doing. That it's breaking down his. BODY
i really think he needs. To he's at the point
of his career where it's, Like, okay let me get
my twenty five and. Eleven let me protect the room
a little, more conserve. Energy let me Let Paul george
do what he. Does he can get twenty points a.
Game let me get let let Ty reese do what he.
Does let's Get Kelly ubray some back. Cuts let's Get
jared McCain some off ball. Opportunities let's let this young GUY.
(32:21):
Vj edgecombe run all over the gym right in the
midst of our older. Roster let's let these young guys
run up the. Floor, TYRESE. Vj Kelly ubra other GUYS
i think EVEN i think they really like The Justin edwards, kid, like,
like let these guys. Run even the backup big a
Dem BONA i think is his. Name that dude high.
Energy get these kids in the game and supplement some
(32:44):
of the things that they do in the half court
with this high octane offense that is very successful in
this MODERN. NBA i think that is the key to
success for The. Sixers LIKE i said on the pod
two episodes, ago this team has everything in them to
be a top five team in The. East but if
the puzzle pieces don't fit and they're not, healthy they'll
easily be a playing. Team or DARE i say out the, Playoffs,
(33:07):
LIKE i think they have to get this stuff in
order from the, jump and that's hard when you're dealing
with injuries. Already, right McCain is, Out Paul george hasn't
played in the, preseason you, Know Joel embiid hasn't, played, Right,
like they need to get all this stuff in. Order
AND i love That TYBEE maxi made that a point
in media day to, say, like we're trying to get
to a point where no matter who's on the, floor
(33:28):
we played the same every. NIGHT i think that's what's
gonna make the Six or. Successful LIKE i, SAID i
think gone are the, days or at least as a,
FAN i don't want to see, it but gone are
the days Of Joel embiid playing all world basketball and or,
well don't confuse What i'm saying he should still be
A ALL Nba All star. Player but the thirty five
(33:49):
points every, night, no we're not doing. That fifty five free,
throws we're not doing. That like LET mb dominate the,
paint LET pg work in the. Wings how he fits in,
again very similar To Jimmy butler back in the, day
and Let Tyree maxy be that lead guard and let
these youngins. Loose let it let. Y'all they need a
(34:09):
supplement that old school basketball with high energy role, players
and they can certainly do. It but LIKE i, said
it's it's all about what it looks like when it's,
healthy BECAUSE i THINK. Vj edgecombe WHEN i watch him,
play he is everything this team. Needs they need his slashing,
ability they need his, aggressiveness they need. That they need
that because in the midst Of Paul george wanting the
(34:30):
ball in the, post M bed wanting the ball in the,
Post tyres wanting to get his every now and then
when they get on those dry, spells they need young
ns LIKE. Vj edgecombe to bring up the intensity. Again
and that's what they were missing last. Year AND i
Forgot Quinton grimes, right this is another kid they were
able to keep and he can. Shoot so, yeah, man
they got a lot of. Talent they just gotta they
(34:51):
gotta learn to fuse it, together, man and that comes
with playing. Healthy So i'm watching out for The. SIXERS
i love What i've been seeing FROM. Vj, edgecomb and you,
KNOW i want to see them figure it out this
year because they're two talented on paper to be out
of the. Playoffs SO i want to see them healthy
AND i want to see them do it this. Year
and then the fourth SCENARIO i, HAVE i actually want
to talk about two guys, here and that's the evolution
(35:12):
Of Zion williamson And Victor Webbin. Yama AND i want
to start With Zion williamson because, again it's funny that
what this is his sixth or seventh season, now and
it still feels like he hasn't done anything right because
he's been struggling with. Injuries even when he's been On
pelicans teams that did make the, playoffs he wasn't around
because of. Injuries so it's, like it's so funny WHEN
(35:33):
i look At zion BECAUSE i don't think we give
him enough credit for the fact that we've seen all
star versions of him and two different players, like we've
seen The zion that was like a force of, nature
strong as, heck bigger than everybody on the, floor, right
will literally rip the ball from somebody and dunk. It
we've seen that version Of, zion and you, know he
(35:58):
was twenty seven points seven rebound sixty percent from the.
Field but then we've also seen the version Of zion
that's a lot More lebron right Point zion as they call,
him who's more of the twenty four point seven, rebounds
five assists and still high fifties in the field goal.
Percentage AND i think that's really, Fascinating, like that's really
fascinating that they can essentially Take, zion who they who
(36:22):
came into the league as kind of like a baby
shack and yet now he slims down and you can
you kind of it's you realize it's better to use
him as more of like a up tempo kind of,
guy like A Lebron james like point forward kind of,
dude right like in a perfect World. Lebron AND i
think that's really. DOPE i think that's really. Dope AND
i think it's just time For Zion williamson to establish his.
(36:42):
Career that's All i've been thinking about. Lately he needs
to establish some healthy seasons under his. Belt he's got
to get The pelicans to the point where they know
that they can build around him on a long term.
Basis and you, know LIKE i, Said i'm just really
rooting for him this. Year you, know it's gonna be
cool to see point zion for probably a whole. Season
and LIKE i, said you know That pelicans roster is
(37:04):
actually really, Fun like they're just. Young but the funny
thing about, them they're, young but they're Not wizards, Young
like they're not let's make a bunch of mistakes. Young
Like Trey murphy has improved tremendously on the, wings like
twenty point per game, score six,' eight jumps out, the
gym three point threat like. He's Nice, jordan poole we
(37:25):
know what he can do right when he's locked in
and he's, you know comfortable with. The basketball shot creation
is off, the charts like. He's Crazy herb jones is
still one of the better defenders in. This, League right
let's see if he can have a healthy season. This
Year jose alvarado a great locker, room guy great perimeter
defender for, his size back up. Point guard, you know
they Picked Up kevon looney to help with the rebounding.
(37:48):
This year you know we'll get Year Two yeves, Missy
right like he's somebody that can protect, the rim can
be a lock. Threat rebound, you know we'll see if
he can make a jump. This year like this team,
is good and not, To mention jeremiah fears he's gonna
be anxious to, show again very high out tame. Point
guard and then Even If derek queen can, get healthy
(38:12):
he can he should be able to do some things
as an inside. Outside big like, this team they can
play and. They're confident that's, a young confident group who's
and a lot of those guys have been through, some,
Things RIGHT like, i said this isn't Like the wizards
and they haven't been. THROUGH anything a lot of these
guys have been through, some, Stuff Right kevon Looney And
jordan poole, are, Champions Right so i'm really anxious to see.
(38:34):
This team oh, my Gosh De, jontay, murray right if
they keep, him around, he's, somebody right if he can
get Healthy around january, or so, YOU know i don't
know what his, timeline is but Like this pelicans group can.
Be nice like unfortunately they're In, the west but if
they were In, the east they WOULD be i think
a play in sleeper, If HEALTHY like i, don't know
there's something about that TEAM where i am. Really intrigued
(38:56):
and it might, sound SILLY but i LIKE what i
see on PAPER at i think there are gonna be
some moments where we laugh. At them they're gonna play some,
weird basketball but at the, same time there are some
THINGS like i think they can be. Very exciting you
know it just you worry about the injuries. And whatnot
BUT like, I said i think the Growth Of, zion
williamson the fact that we've literally seen like two different
versions of him, is AMAZING and i think if he
(39:18):
can have a healthy season, this year you, KNOW you
i don't know if you saw that Clip Of jose
alvarado telling him in. Training camp he's looking him in
the eyes and, he's saying if you play like this all,
the time like this is what we expect out, Of,
you zion you play, like this we can be a
lot better than people think. We are and it starts,
with HIM and i think this role is a lot better.
(39:39):
FOR him i think he's more comfortable in, this ROLE
and i think it doesn't it doesn't break his body
down as much as the baby shack kind of basketball
he was. Playing BEFORE so i Like what i'm Seeing
and i'm ALSO and i also Like what i'm Seeing
From Victor. Webbin yama, you know he had the off
season of. A lifetime it looks, like right and, you
know he did. His homework this is this is a
young kid that has always been locked in and has done,
(40:00):
his homework and he's not scared to get into contact with.
The ogs we saw him on the Track With, kevin
garnett we saw him in the gym With, jakeem ELIJAHWAN
and i think it's gonna. Pay off, you know everybody's
looking at that clip of their little preseason scrimmage That the,
spurs did and, you know he's just Bulldozing Into luke
cornett and he's Dunking like Giannis like wemby wasn't really
(40:23):
playing with that. Force BEFORE and i think the Thing
about winby, last season everybody, was, scared, like oh is
this just gonna? Be him, you know is he gonna
fall into the trap of just shooting a bunch? Of, threes,
right like is he is this the? Modern basketball that
the epitome of. Modern basketball he's got all, this size all.
This length he's such a, talented dude but he's gonna settle.
For threes, BUT again i know it's just a little,
(40:45):
preseason scrimmage but FROM what, i saw it really looked
like a lot of. His buckets he was really trying
to establish. Himself INSIDE and i. LOVE that i. Love
that that is How you that has always been how bigs.
Are success if you can shoot, the three, that's fine
but make it easy. On yourself knock down those, shots
inside get you some, post looks get you some, close
(41:09):
looks get you. Some dunks then start shooting. The threes
because once you get those, points inside you you blinking
you got twelve at, the, Half right then you sprinkle in,
the threes and then you blink you got. Twenty, four
right you get some, free throws, you boom you. Nearing
thirty so it's Like if wenby finally tapped, into That now, i'm.
SCARED right i, don't think, you know on the Surface,
(41:31):
LIKE wenby i don't think he got crazy strong like
to me, At least, but again obviously his work is,
paying off he will. Get stronger and, you know if
he's playing with, that force and he's playing and establishing
himself inside and not settling and leaving letting defenses off
the hook by settling for threes and one legged shots
(41:53):
and all this, CRAZY stuff, i, think yeah we're we
should see the Best Of Victor. Webbin YAMA like, i
said this Is what i've been. Asking for this is
what a lot of veterans have been asking for him,
to do is establish. HIMSELF inside I Know LaMarcus augers
was saying he needs to get a, post, game like
get a, fade away, Get SOMETHING and i think we're
gonna see that. THIS year i don't know how much
of that we are, gonna see but From what, i've
(42:13):
seen it just looks like his approach mentally IS just
i want to establish myself INSIDE and i want to
be able to be, a force SO then i can.
Shoot threes and now once all this is in, my
favor the defense can't do nothing to. Stop, ME again
i think he's gonna have those Things that yiannis. Didn't,
Have right giannis has done a much better job with
it the last couple. Of, Seasons right he's developed his,
(42:33):
pull up, mid range his, fade away things of. That nature,
but again as far as shooting, the three you know
you can Sag off, gianni's right you want him to
fall in love with, those jumpers especially. FROM three I, think,
wemby though he's at a point, where again if he,
becomes like like Almost Like kevin durant as far as
like no matter what inside, THE arc I Think nikola jokic.
(42:55):
As well if he gets in, that category as far
AS everything i shoot inside the arc is, going in
it's gonna get real scary, because HE like, i said
he he has that Mobility that gianni's. Doesn't have he
has a little bit more Smoothness that gianni's. Doesn't have
so if he Can bridge giannis And Basically kevin, durant
together the league is. In trouble the league is. In
(43:16):
trouble and again it lines up WITH what. I said
If this wemby is gonna BE the mvp we think
he can be and carry this first team to the playoffs. And,
whatnot yeah we're we're Like san antonio might arrive quicker than.
We think, SO yeah i just wanted to show Love
to Zion and wemby that they've been working on themselves
and they, look Good and i'm, you know praying for
(43:37):
healthy seasons for both of them and that we get
some good basketball from both, of them because they are
really good talents in. This league and, you know the
fact that they're putting in the work on themselves to
get to reach higher levels is exactly what you want
to see from young guys. Like Them so i'm excited
for both, of Them and i'm rooting for them to
really figure it out. This year and then my, Last,
(43:58):
SCENARIO man i just had to talk about it because he's,
My Guy. Russell, westbrook man why isn't he on? A
TEAM i i just don't, understand how, you KNOW because i, tweeted,
This Right, russell westbrook teams know that for every good,
you take for every, hustle play every, offensive rebound every
(44:23):
for his ability to take the ball ninety four feet coast,
to coast beat the defense down, the floor, scoring transition
for every, triple, double right for every on, ball defense
right hustle that he brings to, the team you have
to take, the turnovers you have to take, the bricks
you have to take, you know teams leaving him open for,
(44:45):
three right you have to take. Those things you have
to take some of the, bonehead, plays right just because
he's such a. Fearless player but at the end of,
the day who doesn't want fifteen to five and five
and great defense off the bench or. EVEN starting, I
LIKE i i don't understand why this dude is not
(45:07):
on the. Basketball TEAM and i and, even then LIKE like,
I said i understand it's, both, SIDES right i don't
Understand why russ opted out Of his. NUGGETS deal i
still don't. Understand that and now he's at a, point where,
you know the only team that really wanted him Was The,
sacramento kings and even they couldn't get a, deal done
and and and the two teams you're hypothetically thinking of
(45:27):
that he could go to Are These sacramento kings Or The,
milwaukee bucks Because The milwaukee bucks have a lot of
competition at the point guard Spot With, Kevin, Porter Junior. Cole,
ANTHONY right i think what's The Kid. RYAN rollins i
think he's still. Over there, so yeah like it's it's
it's Competition That russell westbrook is, available to, you know
win that battle In the, Sacramento right like he's played
(45:50):
With With dennis schroeder BEFORE In. Ok see, you KNOW
obviously i think in that scenario they'd be more open
to him coming off, the bench given what he's been
through the last. Few seasons but it just really shocks
me that that brother isn't on a, Basketball TEAM and
i really, Think IT like, i said it's just a
sad state that we're. In that, like again teams just
(46:11):
don't want him, entirely now, at least so it SEEMS like,
i said, To me i'm, old school So like i'm
just of the notion like IF again i say this all,
the time if you, can hoop you. Can hoop so
oh so you just so your main strength, IS defense
i can work. WITH that i want defense on. My
(46:33):
team you always want somebody that's gonna give. Extra effort
We Saw russell westbrook make hustle plays that literally won
playoff games For The. Denver nuggets we saw him step
up and make corner threes when a lot of people
like to sag. Off him, right again is he the
same force that he was a few? Seasons? Ago no
is he getting triple doubles night in a? Night, out no,
(46:54):
You know i've seen much better scoring Moments From russell
westbrook in the past than what we've seen the last.
FEW seasons i. GET it i get it where you're, just,
like boy this dude is one hundred miles an hour
and he is going to make. SOME mistakes i get
that he makes some mistakes that you know gets him
played off. THE floor i understand all. Of, that BUT like,
i said just knowing who he is as a basketball
(47:17):
player and at least what the players say. About him
they like him as, a leader they like the energy that.
He brings everybody talks about him as a. GREAT teammate
i don't know why you wouldn't want him on. Your
team so, You know i'm Hoping That russell westbrook can.
Get signed i'm hoping that he can find somewhere because
especially like especially the sentimental, in ME like i want
to see him go out on. HIS terms i don't
(47:38):
want him struggling to be or suddenly not be of
value to, a team because that just doesn't make sense.
To me if he's not a value of, a team
you just didn't watch him. Last year if he found
a way to do it With, THE nuggets i feel
like he could do. It anywhere but BUT again i
think teams are they. They don't they just don't want
to pay that, price BECAUSE like, i said wh when
(47:59):
you get a Guy Like, russell westbrook you have to
take into account his negatives as much as, his POSITIVES
and i think teams are just scared and a lot,
of teams especially at this point in, the season preseason
starting training camps are. Done with, you know everybody's gearing
up for the. Regular season they don't want to have
to adjust their roster and their Principals For russell westbrook
unless you're pretty much doomed to be a play a.
(48:20):
Lottery team, so YEAH like, I said i want To
See russell westbrook on. A team i'm hoping that somebody
is able to sign him at some point this year
and play him because he still has shown that he
can play. Meaningful minutes, you know whether That's, the Bucks,
the kings or even somebody else is still yet to.
Be QUESTIONED but i think he can still be in,
(48:42):
this league and he's more than deserving of being in.
This league, you know there are guys that just don't
shoot the basketball that have found ways to be on,
a Team right there are guys that are scared to
shoot that aren't. On teams there are guys that you
know are are literally only defenders and can't do nothing,
on offense and they're. On teams so, it's like, you
know there's there's some, inconsistency here and it makes you
(49:03):
think that it's just politics involved in. Other things, so,
Yeah man i'm Rooting. FOR russ i want to see
him on, a team but definitely talk. TO me i
want to know why you think he may not be on,
a team and if you think he should be on,
a team share what team he should, be on because
it's such an. Unfortunate, Situation again i'm at that, point too,
You know i'm in my, late twenties so it's like
a lot of the Guys that i've really watched their,
(49:24):
entire careers, it's, like, oh shoot these guys are. Getting
older these guys are retiring or they're thinking. About retiring,
you know they're they're struggling with, injuries right and it's
it's really an interesting situation to. Be In like russ
was always my guy man from, day one from, Day
one so it just sucks on THE like, i said
on the, sentimental side it just sucks to see him
in this position as, a fan. You know BUT like,
(49:47):
I said i, understand IT but i would love to
see him on a. Team man so, it's UNFORTUNATE but
i know he's still got some basketball left. To give
it's just about the team that's going to give him
that opportunity to. Show it but with, all that we
have made it to the end Of another hip To the.
Game episode From the rockets point, guard Situation the Warriors and,
Sixers Rosters zion williams's big, year ahead as Well As
(50:07):
Victor webbin yama after a, fat Offseason And russell westbrook
