February, black history month, will be a very active one for the Hip-Hop Hidden Gems. After a bit of a break it will be full gas for the next upcoming weeks. First up is a special feature from fellow 19 Media Group podcaster Tyler Mcdowell-Blanken.

Tyler is one half of the Gimmick Infringement Podcast and shows off his versatility here laying out the scene of a song that influenced his adolescence. Tyler sets his sights on a 2006 classic. The song meant a lot to him growing up, and he vividly explains why it should mean a ton to you as well.

Hip-Hop Hidden Gems presents One Jewel-One Verse: Lupe Fiasco.

McDowell Blankin of the Gimmick Infringement Podcast. I am honored to be a fellow
member of the Mighty nineteen media group. I also feel honored to be here,
Mo Willie, thank you for theinvite. This is so cool because
I am a loyal listener of theproduct. I love what y'all do,
and being invited here to your platformis just such an honor. So appreciate

(02:21):
y'all and hope that I do yourgreatness justice. All right, let's get
it. So what reached out tome and I said, Man, we
gotta do Loupe, we gotta showloop as some love. And I am
choosing to break down one verse fromhis two thousand and six debut album,

(02:44):
Loupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor. Thesong I'm selecting is likely known as his
most famous song, which is KickPush Again. This came out in oh
six, So I have a lotof memories and thoughts about that time in
my life. But we're going toget to that in just a moment.
Let's kick it off. I amchoosing the second verse of Loupe's in this

(03:05):
song, Let's get to it.Oh, my man got a little old,
became a bell. No hal beenon killing himself, This is what
his mama said, but he wasfeeling himself. He got a little more
swag in his style. My mangot a little older, became a better
roller. Yeah, no helmet helpedbet on killing himself, is what his

(03:25):
mama said, But he was feelinghimself. Got a little more swag in
his style. I admittedly was nota skater by any means, definitely not
a skater on the ice, ory, not a skater on concrete, and
yet this song was so appealing tome. At this time. I was
thirteen years old, if I'm doingmy math correctly, so I was a

(03:46):
young in junior high Jones, justtrying to make it through seventh and eighth
grade. What a gloriously awkward timepuberty is. And yet again, even
though it wasn't a skater, thissong appealed to me because it was just
so different. If we think backto OH six, there were an artist
who who looked like Loupe, whowere talking about what Loupe was talking about.
On this album, he has songtitles such as American Terrorists Kick Push,

(04:10):
he said. She said, thiswas a really thoughtful brother who was
not just rapping about some of thetropes that we see in rap of just
cars, money, jewelry, women. This guy was totally unique and that
really really stuck out to me.Love that we starts the song off,
particularly with this opening set of bars. I could kind of just picture in
my head what was going on.I think Loupe is so strong that of

(04:31):
painting a picture through his lyrics, painting that picture in our mind of this
young kid who was really into skatingand skating is so fundamental to his life.
Met his girlfriend. She was clappingin the crowd. What was happening
to him? He said, Iwould Mamby, but I'm engaged cities ever
he was in better he was,and I don't think this bord is strong
enough to carry met his girlfriend. She was clapping in the crowd. Love

(04:56):
is what was happening to him now. He said, I would marry you,
but I'm engaged to these aerials andburials, and I don't think this
board is strong enough to carry totalk, your talk, Loupe, let's
go. This is where the songis really reaching higher points. I love
this set of lines so much sowe get the insertion of a girlfriend in
here, and we're getting this originstory of how they met. This really

(05:20):
resonated with me. She was clappingin the crowd. I thought back to
my seventh and eighth grade basketball games, and if there was a shorty in
the audience in the crowd who Ithought was cute, maybe who I had
a crush on. I really triedto go all out of the court.
And granted I was not a starterby any means. Most of my life
has been spent in a backup pointguard role. But you best believe when

(05:41):
I was gonna be out on thatcourt she was in the audience. I
was going all out. I waspulling out my Allen iverson bag on offense,
I was trying to dive everywhere onthe ground for steals. They knew
what time it was, and lovewhat was happening to him now, So
love is also where that we knowgets thrown out a lot, But I
think Loupe really treated it with anabundant of care here and even the word
marriage gets brought up. We don'tknow the exact age of these characters,

(06:04):
but we can imagine probably teenagers. But I'm engaged to these aerials and burials,
and I don't think this board isstrong enough to carry two. That's
a bar. That is a beautifulexample of wordplay. Aerials and burials.
When have you ever heard those twothings? In the hip hop song before
Lupe's Genius. Let's continue, shesaid, I'm weighing one hundred and twenty

(06:28):
Let me make one thing clear.I don't need to ride jaws. I
get mine right here. She said, Bow, I weigh one hundred and
twenty pounds. Now, let memake one thing clear. I don't need
to ride jaws. I got momright here. Yes. So often we
see that women are just really commodifiedor use as objects or use as something
that we just want to conquer, not the case in this song whatsoever.

(06:50):
So this character kind of talks histalk, but then the young lady says,
here's who I am. I weigha hundred and twenty pounds. Let
me make one thing clear. Idon't need to ride your word. I
got my own, bro, SoI don't need you. I would like
to be here and hang out withyou. It's been spend that time together.
But don't get it twisted. Idon't need you whatsoever. Yes,
queen, I was clapping when Iwas listening to that part. That's that's

(07:13):
amazing. We'd love to see itagain. This is two thousand and six.
This was far ahead of its timefor many reasons. So she said,
I don't know normally take dates inhand, and security came and said,
I'm sorry, there's no skating hand. So she took him to a
spot he didn't know about, somemodern bart parking lot. She said,

(07:36):
I don't normally take dates in here. Security came and said, I'm sorry,
there's no skate in here. Iknow you're bopping your head too.
This is a total story that's happening. As a former English teacher, I
think forever an English teacher, butI haven't taught high school English for six
years. I always looked for storiesthat would appeal to fifteen through eighteen year

(07:56):
olds. Lupe's song is not justsomething you want to play in the car
and ride out too on your wayto school. But this could even be
a short story. This really isa short story. The action, the
different stages we're going through in thissong. Security is coming over, so
there's a little bit of drama andtension happening. These are all great elements
of a story, and Loope reallyuse them pretty exquisitely in this song.

(08:20):
If you have not listened to Foodand Liquor, this wonderful masterpiece of an
album from six Yes I'm talking toum, please go out of your way
this year in twenty twenty three tocheck it out. It will not disappoint
you. Kick pushes definitely, asI mentioned, really well known. But
there are please forgive the pun,so many other gems on this album.
