Join us for this season of Holy Donors as we meet Thomas Howe Scanlan and take a journey through Texas history. Nicknamed Tim and TH, Thomas Scanlan is a little known, albeit quite important, figure in Texas history. In this season, our hosts share stories of Tim Scanlan and discuss how and why they think Tim merits a spot in a podcast about holy donors.
Born in Ireland in 1832, Tim and his family struggled with poverty and religious oppression in Ireland. In 1840, the family took a six week journey across the Atlantic and settled in their new home in New York City. Tim stayed in New York City until he was 21 years old, and then he moved to Houston, TX and started a successful business. Tim married Sophia Ebert, in 1861, yet just as Tim finds personal and professional success, the United States is on the verge of civil war.
At this point in the episode, our hosts, Andrew, Matt, Thaddeus, and Rhen give us a crash course on pre-Civil War Texas history. These details will set the stage for Tim’s choices in adulthood. The episode ends with us wondering how Tim will respond to Texas’s role in the Civil War. Will he choose to support secession and fight for the Confederacy, or will he find a way to support the anti-slavery efforts of the Union? Join us next week to find out!
