Intet kunne slå lille Mathilde ud af livet. Hun elskede mudder og Schleich-dyr og mooncars og at lege med drengene. Men så, uden at nogen rigtigt forstod det, forandrede alt sig.
Det begyndte med de røde, sprukne fingre, så kom skrigene i brusekabinen, en dag følte hun, at hun allerede var død, og så blev unge som hende til regeringens vigtigste opgave.
