Speaker 1 (00:01):
Dude, Hello, and welcome back to my podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Today. I'm going to tell you a very quick miracle story.
And the story was not quick when it happened. It
was not fun actually, But i'll get to that because
this episode is going to be a little bit shorter
because I'm probably not going to edit it since I
waited till the very last minute. Again, I promise you,
(00:40):
I'm going to have two episodes out next week, and
at least one of them is going to be really good.
I make no promises for what the other one will be,
but one of them will be good, all right, I
said it here first. Okay, So for the story today,
I want to tell you about a little hike that
I went on. Okay, not last Monday and not the Monday,
(01:02):
and I think it was actually the monday before that.
I don't remember exactly, but it was before the month
of July ended. I moved on. I think it was
July twenty eighth, is what I'm guessing. If I had
to guess, it'd be July twenty eighth, and I don't
really want to check, so just go with me on this, Okay,
So it was July twenty eighth, because twenty ninth was
a Tuesday, and the thirtieth was a Wednesday, and the
(01:24):
thirty first was a Frat Thursday. Yes, okay, so it
was July twenty eighth, and I decided, after having leg
day at the gym that when I got home, I
was in the mood to go on a hike. And
at this point in time, I think there was a
couple of reasons that I did this. One, I was
moving soon. I was moving literally on Thursday, and I
(01:46):
hadn't packed yet. I hadn't packed a lot. Really, I
packed bare minimum. I was feeling really stressed and overwhelmed,
and I wanted to do something productive, and I wasn't
really in the mood to clock in for work, and
I was really in the mood to lay around all day.
And so after going to the gym, I decided, hmm,
(02:06):
I am going to go hiking. And I think the
other reason that I did this is because I was moving.
On Thursday. I decided, okay, I want to hike to
the sea in Cedar City. So the hike to the
sea in Cedar City was right by my old house.
I literally could walk to the trail super close. It
(02:27):
took me like maybe seven eight minutes to get to
the trail from my house. And I didn't know about
this trail. I mean, like I had heard about it,
but not until more recent, you know, till I was moving.
And so I realized before I moved that I actually
really wanted to do this hike before I left, and
so I just, I don't know, it seemed like a
(02:48):
good idea, and so I was like, all right, I'm
gonna do it. I packed a little backpack I put
and had a Sauny water bottle in there that I
had kept forever and refilled with water and then drink
and refilled and drink and we filled. And it's one
of those like twenty ounce bottle water bottle of bottles
of water, so it's a bigger one than the sixteen
ounce anyway, So I brought that. I brought a speaker
(03:10):
so that I could listen to things without putting an
air pod in because you know, just air pods in
your ear kind of sometimes it feels suffocating, and then
also it just builds up earwax anyway, not my favorite
feeling in the world. And I was like, you know what,
I'm gonna be hiking. No one's gonna be a really
around me, so I can just turn on my speaker.
I just listen to my speaker. And then I brought
my charging port or charging what's it called. I don't
(03:34):
even know. I don't feel like charging port is right,
portable charger. I brought my portable charger and then a backpack,
and I had my hat on because I'm allergic to
sunscreen and it was very, very sunny outside, and I
decided I'm gonna wear a hat. So I go and
when I set off, I'm pretty sure my watch is
(03:54):
like sixty percent or sixty two percent or something. And
I mean it's not an incredibly important detail, but my
watch does end up dying towards the end of this hike,
so that is part of the story anyway. So I'm like, okay,
I'm gonna head out there. So to tell you a
little bit more about the Sea hike, the Sea hike
is four and a half miles one way, so round
(04:16):
trip it's about nine miles. All right, big deal. It's
a big hike, and it's basically all uphill. I mean,
you were straight climbing uphill because the sea is on
the very top of the mountain. It's actually funny. We
were driving through town here in Provo and I said
to my mom, I'm gonna hike the Why and she
(04:38):
was like, I don't know, it's kind of a hard hike.
I mean, she's like, you know, you can do it,
but it's kind of a hard hike. I was like, oh,
it's not harder than the Sea Hike, and she's like,
I don't know. I said, no, I promised you. I
did the Sea Hike just a few days ago. It's
not harder than the Sea Hike. And she's like, well,
you've never done the Y Hike, And so I looked
it up and the Y Hike is one point one
(04:59):
miles way, so it's so it's two point two miles
round trip, and the Sea Hike one way is four
point five miles completely uphill. Hey, I'm not discrediting those
who have hiked the Why. I'm going to hike the
Wy and I'm sure it's going to be hard, and
I'm gonna be like, huh, this is really tiring. But
(05:19):
I'm telling you, the Sea Hike is not an easy hike.
It's really not. It's very twisty and windy and basically
all up hill. But I was like, I'm gonna do this.
So I start up there, and I didn't really decide
how far I was gonna go. I hadn't decided that
I was going to hike all the way up to
the sea, and I didn't decide that I wasn't going
to hike up all the way to the sea. I
(05:40):
just like kind of decided that whatever happened happened. So
I turned it on my watch, you know the outdoor
I think I even put hike on. I'm pretty sure
I put hike on. And then you know how the
Apple Watch has different workouts. There's like an outdoor walk
and an indoor walk and everything under the sun basically,
And I'm pretty sure I typed the hikeke specifically because
(06:02):
it reports on elevation, and I was curious how much,
oh like, how I was how much I was hiking upwards?
What am I trying to say? I don't know, do
you know what I'm trying to say? Like how uphill
I was hiking? Yeah, I don't know anyway, So turn
that on, start walking, and I'm having a really nice
(06:24):
time hiking. It is really nice. It's all outside. Because
I started at four pm. I'm pretty sure. It was
like I don't know, three p fifty or four oh
one or something. It was really it was really late
in the afternoon, but it was still really sunny outside
and it wasn't evening yet. So I go up this
hike and I had actually done the same hike like
(06:44):
three days before, but I'd only gone up to bench three,
which is like a mile up, and I was like,
I'm gonna make it past bench three. That's my goal today.
So I get past bench one. I guess it's actually
a bench. It starts with bench six, five, and then
four and then three. So I passed bent six, I patched,
I passed bench five, I passed bench four, and then
(07:07):
I pass bench three. I'm like, all right, here I go.
So I keep hiking and hiking. I'm drinking a lot
of water. I also brought my hydro walter and he
contains or he holds sixty four ounces of water, so
I had about eighty four ounces of water or so
with me at least eighty ounces of water. That's important
(07:29):
because I ran out anyway. So I'm hiking. I'm really
enjoying it. And actually I was able to clock in
while I listened to this book that I was supposed
to be reading. So I actually got paid to hike.
Kind of awesome, really grateful for that. So anyway, had
I was clocked in, I had my speaker on, I
was listening to this book and pondery and kind of
(07:50):
thinking about and thinking about what things I should take
note of when I got home that was relevant. And yeah,
it was just it's a really nice day. It was hot,
like I said, very hot, and my body was tired,
specifically because I had done leg day at the gym
that morning, because that was a great idea to do
(08:12):
leg day and then go hiking, you know. Anyway, so
I'm really enjoying the psike. I am out there from
about four pm. Well, I'm getting ahead of myself. I
don't actually want to tell you that yet. So I
get up there and I am hiking for I think
I hiked for two hours and forty minutes one way.
(08:36):
I don't remember exactly how far it was, but I
remember thinking at the forty mark I was going to
turn around forty minute mark. And I didn't make it
all the way up to the sea, but I made
it really close. So the sea was about I don't know,
not even half a mile away, like I was able.
I was close enough to the sea that I was
(08:58):
able to see the lookout point and it was really close,
like I could have kept going, but I was like,
you know what, I really don't want to hike in
the dark, and I still need to go all the
way back down, so I'm like, I don't want to
hike all the way up to the seat. And I
was okay with that. I was like, that's all right.
I really did a good job. I hiked at least
(09:20):
I think it was like four point zero three miles uphill.
I was like, I did a majority of the hike.
I really had like half a mile left, just a
little bit under half a mile left, and I was like,
I'm good. I don't want to hike in the dark.
I need to turn around so that you know, I
get home or whatever. And I think I turned around
at like seven seventeen or something, so maybe I hiked
(09:42):
for three hours and forty No, it was only two hours.
I don't remember what time it was, to be honest
with you. But I turn around and I start hiking
down and my body is very sore. My feet are hurting,
they're so sore. My legs are sore, but I'm still
having a really good time. I ran into a few
deer that were kind of close, and I was like,
(10:05):
can you tell that I waited last minute because it's
kind of late, and I'm really goofy. I hope that
doesn't bother you. So if it does, I guess you
can just switch and listen to something else. So yes,
very goofy, very silly. But I saw some deer and
I was like, low key tongue, a bit scared, even
though I knew they were scared. I know they were
more scared of me, and I knew that I was
(10:25):
gonna be fine, but part of me was like, I
don't know, they're kind of big. What if you just
ran into me? They were all does, They were all females,
but I ran into two or three of them that
were pretty close. One of them was on the path
that I was going to come to until I yelled
at it, leave, get out of here and go away,
and it just looked at me, and then eventually it
walked away and then I kept going. But yeah, I
(10:48):
was a tiny bit scared. I'm not gonna lie. I
knew that there weren't gonna be any bears or anything.
So I wasn't scared in that aspect, and yeah, it
was fine. So anyway, hiking down, hiking down, hiking down
and down and starting to get dark, starting to get dark.
It's like eight fifty okay, it's eight fifty five. Okay,
the sun's really starting to go down, starting to get dark.
(11:10):
So I get down close to the bottom. I'm really
close to the very beginning of the trailhead and I
look at my phone and I guess, let me back
up a little bit. So I ended up finishing the
book that I had been listening to. I started it
and finished it all in that one trip, all in
that one hike, and so I started something else, and
(11:32):
every couple of minutes this book would just stop. I
was like, why is it doing this? This is really annoying,
Like I have to keep going on my phone to
play push play again. I hate this. Why is this
doing this? And so I don't know. I kept doing
it for like two or three more times where it
would stop and I'd push play and stop and push play,
And eventually I looked at my phone for real rather
(11:52):
than just pushing play, and I saw something that made
my heart drop into my shoes, not my heart drop
in heart drop into your stomach? Is that what the
phrase is? Anyway, So I saw something that did not
make me happy. My Apple phone had told me that
I had left my AirPod behind, and I was like, no, please, no,
(12:18):
And so I checked Walter because my AirPods are connected
to him. They're in a little case that's hanging from
a carabiner, and I opened him up and my left
air bud, my left AirPod is missing. It's not there,
and I'm like, no, please, no, like this, no, no, no,
(12:40):
no no. I've listened and I used my AirPods a lot,
specifically at the gym because I put both of them
in and then there's noise canceling, and then I'm able
to listen to something. And even though the gym is
a really loud atmosphere and there's music going on and
people are working out and stuff, because of the noise
canceling feature, I'm able to still hear my audiobook or
my podcast or whatever around listening to. And I was like,
(13:02):
if I lose my left air pod, I'm not going
to be able to use the noise canceling beature. And
in addition to that, I'm not going to be able
to switch off air pods or earbuds when one of
them is bothering me because I normally don't wear both
of them at the same time unless I am at
(13:22):
the gym. Then I only wear one of them because
I like to be aware of my surroundings, you know.
So I'm like, I've got to go back. I've got
to go get this, I've got to go back. I've
got to turn around. So I'm not at the very
end of the trailhead, but I'm really close. And I
decide I'm gonna turn around and I'm going to start
(13:42):
hiking back uphill. And I'm like, oh great, And part
of me's terrified because I'm like, what if I don't
even find my AirPod? What if it's like close to
the top, you know, what if it's all the way
up there. I mean, I can't do this like again.
And at this point, guys, it is literally nine ten pm.
(14:04):
It is dark. It is starting to get really dark,
and all I have is my phone for a flashlight,
which is actually pretty good. Flat phone flashlights are actually
no complaints. They're actually pretty n good. They're pretty powerful.
I mean, a nicer flashlight would have been nice, but
my phone was just fine. So I turned around and
(14:25):
I start hiking back up hill. And mind you, I
have already been hiking for at least eight miles, because
I hiked four miles up and I've basically hiked four
miles down, and now I am turning around to go
back uphill, and I'm like, what am I doing? Like,
(14:45):
oh my gosh, And part of me is thinking I'll
just go home and come back up tomorrow, and I
think there's no way I'm coming back. I've just got
to go get it. So I start hiking up there.
I just turned the book off at this point, and
I think I might I have turned on I don't know,
some LDS, some conference talk or some devotional from BYU,
(15:07):
and I'm just kind of listening to it. But mostly
the entire time, all I am thinking and all I
am doing is praying ivan father, please please please please
have me father, please please please please help me fain
my AirPod please please please please please please help me
keep going, please please please please help me have stay
on up. Please please please my father, please please please
something me, Father, Please. That's all I'm saying the entire
(15:27):
time I was basically just repeating that in my head.
And the issue is that in addition to hiking back
up hill, in addition to being exhausted, in addition to
literally looking forward to being home and being able to
eat and drink some chocolate milk because Loki, I had
some chocolate molak at home, and I was really craving it.
(15:48):
I had run out of water. I had run out
of water, like, I don't know, twenty or thirty minutes
as I was heading back downhill, and so I was
really thirsty, and I was like, oh my gosh, this
is not good. This is really not good. But I
just kept going. No water, but I just kept going.
(16:09):
So I'm hiking, and I'm hiking. And one of the
really nice things about the phone, the Apple, you know, iPhone,
is that it has a location on the AirPods, and
so it tells me that my left AirPod is I
can't remember exactly what it started off by saying, but
I'm pretty sure it said like nine hundred feet or
(16:30):
something like that. I could be wrong, but I don't
know what it started off by saying, but it said
that it was a certain you know, footage or whatever
away and he said it was a twelve minute walk originally,
and I was like, okay, I can do a twelve
minute walk. Yeah, it didn't take me twelve minutes. And
the reason was not because I was slow, though I
(16:50):
probably was a lot slower that point than I had
been earlier in the day, but it's because the trail
is not in the Apple iPhone or on Apple Maps
in you know where the trail is, and so it
was going off like the nearest road, and so I
think it said that it was like a six minute drive,
(17:11):
but there was no roads anywhere, so that's super not
accurate at all. So anyway, the good news is, however,
is I kept checking my phone to see how far
away the AirPod was, and it was like, oh, now
it's point six miles away. Now it's point five miles away.
And then I kept going, kept going, and eventually it
said point three miles and then when I checked it again,
(17:33):
it said point one mile and I was like this
is wild, Like this I really must be getting closer
to this because it says that it's getting closer, even
though like when I checked it said it was you know,
some way off out there, and so I like point
my phone you know, to make the little arrow move
or the little blue highlighted point move. And it was
(17:57):
like in this direction that the path wasn't even heading up,
but I knew that the path would eventually turn that way.
So it's like, I bet it's up there. So anyway,
it says point two, said point one mile, And at
this point it's like, okay, you know, you can start
searching for your AirPod now. So I put the air
pod tracking thing on and you can. Actually it's wild.
(18:18):
It will say to you hot or cold or like
it doesn't say hot or cold, but it's kind of
like the hotter cold game and will say really far
away or really close. And so I did that, and
I'm still praying this entire time, Like and even though
my phone says point five miles, point four miles, point
three miles or whatever, I'm still looking for on the
path with my flashlight as I go up. Mind you,
(18:38):
it is ten pm, Like I am hiking in the
dark now, it's nine fifty nine forty five, nine fifty
nine fifty five ten, Like it's getting darker. I mean,
actually it's not getting darker. It's just dark. It's just dark.
And I'm like please have me. Father, please help me, father,
please please please please. And I'm like, this would make
a really coold miracle store my father, please help. So yeah, okay.
(19:04):
And then eventually it gets to the point where it's like,
you know, you can search for it, so I click
on it and it's like, oh, it's too far away,
and so I'm dang, So I keep walking, keep walking.
Then eventually click on it again and it actually pulls
up the like hot or cold thing and it doesn't
say hotter cold, says very far, but says very very far.
And I'm like, okay, well, I'm just gonna keep walking
(19:26):
up the path. So I keep walking up the path
for like another minute or so, and then it says
closer or near or near near near. Then eventually it
says it's within your grasp, and I'm like, that's wild
that it says that, or like it's within your reach.
And there it is. It is on the path, laying there.
I don't even remember I think it was how much
(19:47):
How much did it was it uphill? It was at
least half a mile that I had hiked back up,
but I don't remember exactly how long I had to hike.
It might have been like point six miles that I dike,
I really don't remember, but I had to hike back
up so I find this. I put it in my hydro.
I put my hydro in my backpack so that it
(20:08):
can't fall out, because I never used my AirPods that day.
I was just carrying my hydro and I think at
one point the case had just flipped open and my
left AirPod had just fallen out. And then obviously I
didn't realize till later, and I wouldn't have realized at
all without that fancy, dancy feature. Dancy did I just
say that, that fancy feature on the iPhone which tells
(20:30):
you that you know you've left your AirPods behind or whatever.
So I find it, put it in my backpack so
I can't lose it again. And I turn around and
I am exhausted, I am thirsty, I am grateful, beyond grateful.
I prayed basically the whole way down, just saying thank THEE.
I was just like, thank THEE on the blood. Think
they think the thinky thank you, think you think you
(20:51):
thank you, thank you. I was so grateful, so grateful,
so grateful. But anyway, I'm turning around and I'm so tired,
I'm so thirsty. I'm just I'm beat man. I am
so tired, mind you, At this point, I have probably hiked,
I don't know, at least eight and a half to
nine miles, right, I'm very tired. So I keep hiking,
(21:12):
keep hiking, keep hiking. I'm going downhill now. And at
this point, I'm like, I am so thirsty it's not
even funny. And so I decide, you know what, I
am going to call my sister. So I call my
sister and she answers right away, and luckily I had
service and everything, and I explained to her the situation,
and I marry. I might not have cried a little bit,
and I was like, will you please meet me at
(21:34):
the trailhead with water? I just want some water. And
I mean, the funny thing is that my house is
literally like eight minute walk from the trailhead, and it's
really not even that big of a deal at all,
but I just really wanted water and Loki. I just
wanted someone to just come and tell me there's gonna
(21:55):
be okay. And so she's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
So she and her boyfriend come and I'm still hiking down.
They had to wait for me like ten minutes or something.
But yeah, when I called them, I still had like
twenty twenty five minutes left downhill. So they actually, funny enough,
got out of their car and started walking up. But
(22:17):
they it's so good that we run into each other.
It's literally divine design. It is divine design. Because they
started going up the wrong path. There's like a few
different trails starting at the Sea Hill Trail, and it's
dark so they couldn't see the signs. I was like,
this is the Sea Trail, this is the Iron Trail
(22:37):
or something like that. So I see two flashlights headed
up and they're near me, but they're like to the right,
a little bit up, and I'm like literally not crying,
but like close to tears, Like I am so tired.
You know, I've been hiking since four pm. It's now
ten twenty pm. I'm just really tired, really tired. And
(22:59):
so I yell, hey, is that you? And they're like what, Yeah,
So they turned around and I mean they didn't have
to walk up walk far. We met up. But it's
just really good that I ran into them because they
were literally going up the wrong trail, which is funny.
But they gave me some water. They brought four water bottles,
and I down two of them, and then I held
on to one and was just like sipping the third.
(23:20):
And they ended up parking. They didn't know that they
could park right next to the trailhead, so they parked
up next to this water the water tower or whatever,
and so we ended up walking all the way up
to where their car was, which wasn't too far. It
was like probably like a five or six minute walk
up to where they're where her car was. And the
(23:42):
funny thing is, and I didn't tell them this, and
she'll never listen to this, so she'll never know. But
the funny thing is that it probably would have been
quicker for me to just walk home after they gave
me the water, because there was a little dirt road
leading off the gravel path to my neighborhood, which is
(24:03):
kind of the shortcut. And I assumed they would, you know,
they would meet me at the very beginning of the
trailhood so I wouldn't have to walk that last little bit.
But they didn't know, so we so they parked by
the water trail or the water tank or whatever water tower.
I don't know what it's called. I think it's the
water tower. Anyway, So I was like, but I'm they
(24:24):
came to like rescue me, you know, or they brought
me water or whatever. So I wasn't gonna like ditch
them and then go somewhere else, you know. So anyway,
I walked up with them. Then they drove me to
my home, which was literally like a one or two
minute drive, Like it wasn't far. But yeah, I probably
could have broken off and I might have even gotten
to my house before before I would have gotten to
(24:46):
it in their car. But that doesn't matter. I just
think that part of the story is funny. But mind
you me, don't you mind. I don't know what I'm
trying to say. What I'm trying to say is, don't
feel like you need to lecture me about going hiking
all by myself and in the middle of the late afternoon,
because don't you worry. My sister gave me an earful
(25:08):
She was not happy with me. She went on and
on and on about how I shouldn't have gone hiking
by myself, about how it wasn't safe, about what were
you thinking? I mean, wow, she gave it to me.
She gave me earful and honestly, I just I was
just happy to just be done, you know, And to
be honest, if I was still living there, I might
(25:29):
have done it again. Like either I didn't learn any
lesson or anything, which I probably should have learned a lesson,
but I didn't learn any lesson, though I do feel
like I would have tried to invite other people to
go hiking with me. It was just fun, you know.
I was really calming and really peaceful to just go
hiking by myself. I was just I don't know, so
spiritual experience almost and the book I was listening to
(25:51):
was a faith book, and so a faith book, so
it was just anyway. But yeah, that's my story and
the reason I said forty six minute miracle because I
hiked up hill for forty six minutes after I realized
my AirPod was missing. So yes, that's the story. I
hiked up forty six minutes, then I found my AirPod,
(26:14):
and then I hiked back down, which probably took me like,
I don't know, thirty minutes, twenty five to thirty minutes,
because it's faster going downhill than it is going uphill.
But that's the story. My sister rescued me, not really
but kind of. She didn't bring me water, which was
really really nice of her, and she got to give
me a cute little lectured getting after me and everything.
(26:41):
Oh it's so funny. But yeah, having father blessed me
because I was able to find my AirPod, and it
took me forty six minutes of praying and hiking uphill
in order to find it. But one thing that I
did learn was that hard work pays off. And I
know that it doesn't always work out the way that
we want it to or always work out the exact
(27:02):
way that we plan on it working out. I know
that it doesn't work out always that way, and it's
very possible that I could have not found my AirPod.
But I'm really grateful that I did, and I'm really
grateful for my family and for being able to call
my sister and have her show up and bring me water.
When I got home, I drank some chocolate milk, don't
(27:23):
you worry, and I ate some food and took a shower.
I'd like to say I slept really well that night,
but I did not, because my muscles ached so bad.
And you know how sometimes when you have a cold
and your muscles ache and you just can't get comfortable
because you like keep having to stretch out your muscles
because they are uncomfortable and you ache, and it's just
(27:44):
I was kind of like that. I didn't have a cold,
but my muscles did ache really bad and I could
not sleep. It was not a fun night. But it
worked out because the next morning I had a physical
training or personal training session and rather than working out,
we just stretched and stuff. So you know how like
you have a second person to help you stretch out
(28:05):
and stuff. So she helped me do that. Anyway, that's
my story. Wanted to tell you the little cute miracle story.
My fitbit said that I had thirty one, nine hundred
and sixty four steps that day, which is like a lot.
By the way, that's like more than I can normally
get in a week. Not really, I get around that,
(28:28):
but yeah, I'm not a super big walkers. Most of
the time. I'm hoping with campus and getting into By's
Master program that I'll actually be out and about and
walking more. I mean, I'm gonna walk to campus, so
that'll be good. But yep, that's my story. Thank you
so much for listening and for it. I love how
(28:48):
I said it's gonna be quick twenty nine minutes later, though,
I'm sure. I mean, I'm not gonna edit this very much.
I'm not gonna listen to all of it back, so
I'll just probably take out the couple of times that
I yawned, because I don't want to make you yawn,
you know what I'm saying. Anyway, thank you so much
for listening. Don't forget to embrace imperfection by meaning satisfaction
(29:12):
and joy from the journey, and look for miracles in
your life, because I promise you they're there. I'm Kira,
and this is imperfectly broken. The podcast
