Here's Rob with today's tip.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
A common question I received from listeners and readers is
regarding ornamental grasses for shade. There are many great ornamental
grasses that work well in shade or are native to
shady habitats and wetlands. All this week and in the
Midwest Garden, I've been showcasing ornamental grasses for various locations
in the yard and garden today Ornamental grasses for shade.
There are many great ornamental grasses, both native and non native,

(00:32):
for shady areas of the yard and garden. One of
my favorites is Japanese forest grass. This plant features a
rather low growing mound of extremely attractive green and gold
foliage that layers and cascades over itself, creating a waterfall effect.
When planted on a slight rise or even in a container,
this effect is simply spectacular. You often see it planted
in shade gardens or hosta gardens, such as the spectacular

(00:54):
specimens at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. There is also
an all gold version of Japanese forest grass that is
quite attractive as well as one tinged with red. Native
Northern bottle brush grass is a wonderful shade grass and
quite the conversation piece. Its large, wide, bottle brush shaped
seed plumes are spectacular from midsummer into fall. This grass
may grow two to three feet in height. Pennsylvania sedge

(01:16):
is another wonderful grass for shady areas. This is especially
useful in dry sandy areas where it thrives. A low
growing mound of spectacularly textured leaves makes this an attractive
and sought after shade grass. In addition, as a bonus,
this plant features beautiful lemon yellow flowers in the spring.
Plantain leafed sedge is another great ornamental brass for shade.

(01:37):
This is another native Wisconsin plant featuring wide blades almost
resembling a hosta. I'll have more to come on ornamental
grasses all this week on in the Midwest Garden.
