Today on in the Midwest Garden, I'm continuing my showcase
of beautiful roadside wildflowers those we enjoy in our travels
and journeys throughout Wisconsin. In the Midwest. All of these
bloom heavily along country roads and highways, creating a spectacular
display throughout the summer season. Today, I'll take a look
at some of the wild daisy light blooms, easy to
recognize even while on the road. The large yellow orange

blooms of black eyed Susan feature a dark chocolate brown
cone or center. Black eyed Susan's bloom from July all
the way through October. A traditional heirloom wildflower prized by many,
similar to black eyed Susan, but with a yellow center,
is false sunflower. These may grow two to four feet
high and feature dozens of yellow orange blooms from Midsummer
into fall. The familiar pinkish purple blooms of native purple

cone flower also boom in many areas, especially hot, dry roadsides.
There are two varieties of purplecomb flower, the classic as
well as the more scarce variety known as pale purplecomb flower.
Pale purplecome flower has long, strappy petals with a raspberry
center cone. The prairie giants also form vast colonies along
country roads. Cupplant, compass plant, prairie doc, and rose and

wheat are all similar in flower with large yellow, sunflower
like blooms. Their leaves often help distinguish them. Prairie doc
has large elephant ear leaves at the base of the
plant that may be two to three feet long. Compass
plant features huge cut leaves that resemble the leaves of
oak trees. Cupplant features distinct square stems with leaves that
join to form a cup in the middle of the stem.

All of these beevies can be seen now at the
peak of summer along Wisconsin and the Midwest country roads.
