Here's Rob with today's tip.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
All this week on in the Midwest Garden, I'm showcasing
some of the most showy and distinct roadside wildflowers we
encounter on our travels along country roads and highways. Here
in the Midwest. The summer season is wildflower season, and
one of the most enjoyable things to do on our
travels is to identify them as they grow along highways
and roadsides. Purple loose strife is an abundant wildflower seen

(00:30):
mostly along country roads and highways that travel through wetlands
or feature wet ditches. The tall, bright, purple blooms are
prized by pollinators, yet the plant is not native and
is considered highly invasive in Wisconsin. Another purple roadside bloom
is Canada thistle, with its fuzzy thistle blooms growing in
clusters at the tips of spiny stalks, this plant can

(00:51):
grow into large colonies along sections of country highway. Unfortunately,
this is also a non native and invasive species here
in our state, though it is prized as a host
by many butterflies. One of the most familiar roadside wildflowers
that really begins to put on a show in August
and September is golden rod. There are up to forty
different species of golden rod found in the Midwest. All

(01:12):
are important pollinator plants, and they grow from one to
five feet in height. Late in summer into fall, the
asters begin to bloom along country roads and highways. Masses
of white heath faster and frost aster look almost like
snow when they are in full bloom. Taller asters in
purple and yellow are New England aster, Sky blue aster,
smooth aster, and flat topped astor are many of the

(01:33):
other aster species that bloom along country roads and highways
from late summer into fall. Be sure to check out
the spectacular showcase of roadside wildflowers in bloom all throughout
the summer and fall season and practice identifying as many
as you can.
