Speaker 2 (00:10):
All this week on in the Midwest Garden, I'm showcasing
some of the beautiful roadside wildflowers that many of us
enjoy on our travels along country roads and highways this
time of year. By the middle of summer, the roadside
wildflowers are putting on quite a show. Learning to identify
them and point them out as we are traveling is
a great way to explore the world of wildflower watching
on the road. Today, a few of the classic roadside

wildflowers now in bloom here in the Midwest. One of
the showiest of the roadside wildflowers is chicory. Chicarey, also
known as blue dandelion, is the most important herb with
many medicinal uses. Its beautiful sky blue flowers grow on
ston stems that may reach two to three feet high.
Some days, dozens of blooms may be flowing at one time,
creating a lush wall of blue for miles and miles

along country roads. Another hard to miss beauty now in
bloom along country roads in Wisconsin and the Midwest, forms
a low growing mound of brilliant yellow blooms. This is
called bird's foot treefoil. Originally planted intentionally as erosion control
along Wisconsin's highways, this planet has quickly escaped and now
formed impenetrable masses along many country roads. Its bright yellow,

low growing blooms are indeed beautiful, especially when seen beneath
towering chicory and other blooms. Crown vetch is similar to
birds foot treefoil, with larger clusters of blooms in multiple
shades of pink, purple, and white. This is another plant
that was intentionally used as erosion control along highways and
overpasses that has quickly escaped and now grows wild. It
has distinctive ernie leaves and a low growing binding habit.

(01:37):
I'll have more on roadside wildflowers if summer. All the
sweet one in the Midwest.
