Speaker 2 (00:10):
Today, I'm in the Midwest garden more roadside beauty All
this week, I'm showcasing some of my favorite roadside wildflowers,
those that most of us see as we drive around
country roads and highways, but are unable to identify. For
the most part. A combination of native and non native
wildflowers bloom and beautiful masses along country roads and highways
during the summer season. Today, I'll look at several more.

(00:31):
Many people are familiar with the flattened, lacy umbrella like
blooms of Queen Anne's Lace. From summer until fall, this
beauty blooms along area highways and roadsides. This is also
known as wild carrot and is an important host plant
for the black swallowtail butterfly, similar to Queen Anne's Lace,
but with flattened clusters of fresh, tightly spaced blooms. As
last year's herb of the year, common yarrow, yarrow is

(00:54):
an important medicinal herb and has many wonderful uses. It
is also an important pollinator plant for just about every
fly species, as well as bumblebees, and more interestingly, yaro
is both native and non native. In fact, much of
what we see as a hybrid of the original native
North American species and the introduced European variety. Another plant
similar to Queen Ann's lace and closely related features yellow

(01:16):
umbrella blooms. This is wild parsnip. Wild parsnip is invasive
in Wisconsin and can sometimes be harmful if the plant
sap comes into contact with your skin on a sunny day.
This toxin is photosensitive and will cause blistering, sometimes severe
if exposed to sunlight. It's best to avoid these plants
while it's growing. I'll have more on roadside wildflower identification

(01:37):
all this week on in the Midwest.
