Speaker 2 (00:11):
Some people call them weeds, some people call them wildflowers.
However you describe them. Driving along country roads in Wisconsin
in the Midwest during summer is a showcase of colorful bloom,
wonderful textures, and miles and miles of summertime beauty. All
this week on in the Midwest Garden, I'll take a
closer look at some of these amazing roadside wildflowers that
brighten our summer travels. Roadside wildflowers include both non native

(00:33):
and native species. Many of these are spread easily as
the turbulence created by traffic can quickly spread seeds up
and down the side of the road or highway for
many miles. As you can imagine, roadside wildflowers are a
tough bunch. These plants grow in some of the worst conditions,
including gravel, sand, hot sun, as well as often surviving
repeated mowings and cuttings. To grow here along the sides

(00:55):
of the country roads in Wisconsin, these plants have to
be hardy. They have to be tough, and they have
to be adaptable and resilient. Throughout the week, I'll talk
about some of these amazing and beautiful wildflowers as well
as the roles they play. Roadside wildflowers are sometimes planted
for erosion control as their deep root systems protect soils
along highways and roadways. Of course, their beautiful blooms are

(01:16):
also prized by pollinators such as bumblebeef, butterflies and more.
I'll have more on our beautiful roadside wildflowers all this
week on in the Midwest Garden.
