Speaker 2 (00:11):
August is prairie peak here in the Midwest, and all
this week I've been showcasing some of my favorite prairie blooms.
Today a collection of more August blooming prairie beauties. Prairie
doc is a classic prairie giant with massive elephant ear
leaves that grow at ground level and a tall, thin
spike of sunfloor like blooms that may be nine to
ten feet in height. Compass plant is another of the

prairie giants, with massive stalks of sun flora like blooms
that may be five to six feet in height. This
one features large cut leaves much like an oak leaf.
Lead plant grows almost like a small woody shrub with
silvery foliage and short spikes of blooms that are cobalt
blue in color with contrasting orange stamens. Rattlesnake Master grows
almost like a yucca, with pointed leaves and a beautiful

shaped blooms and silvery green Coreopsis of different species grow
in the prairies of Wisconsin. There is tall coreopsis, which
may grow seven to eight feet tall, and lance leaf
coreopsis that features larger orange yellow blooms. Joepieweed is a
classic late summer bloom in a beautiful shade of pinkish
purple with large clusters of frothy blooms. Milkweeds of many

species adorn the August prairie. There is orange milkweed or butterflyweed,
as well as swamp milkweed, common milkweed, classpan milkweed, green
comet milkweed, and others. Ironweed booms in a rich shade
of wine purple and is similar to joepieweed, growing three
to six feet in height. While petunia is a low
growing plant of hot, dry prairies, this plant may grow
one to two feet high and wide and covered with

of our many prairie restoration areas to witness these beauties
in bloom, or consider adding them to your own backyard,
garden and landscape.
