Speaker 1 (00:11):
Hello, creeps, this is PFCX inviting you to listen to
another mystery playhouse presentation. Tonight. We take you to the
Inner Sanctum where we'll hear an original radio play by
Robert Newman. The title The Dark Chain. It's one of
the best stories to come our way in some time.
So at this point we'll turn you over to your
Inner Sanctum host. We're at his door, so let's.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Open it like this.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Good evening, friends of Vienna Sanctum. This is your host
to welcome you through the squeaking the drap it tombs
down the saida. Our story tonight is about death, violent death,
and also about something which is even more terrifying, the unknown.

(01:10):
You don't believe that anything can be more frightening than death,
then you've never experienced the ultimate in fear, but you
will within the next few minutes if you'll put out
the lights, put your chair up close, and listen to
The Dark.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Cheamb is it gross sins Vegan?

Speaker 5 (01:33):
Hello, please listen. You've got to help me. You've got
to I don't know how you can. My name is Watson,
Joe Watson. I'm a driver for the ACME Sanitary hand laundry,
Andrew where I am? I don't know. That's part of
the trouble. Look, hey, wait, listen. I know it sounds crazy,
but it's true. Check the laundry, check the veterans. I'm
an XGI.

Speaker 6 (01:53):
They'll tell you. I'm straight.

Speaker 5 (01:55):
Well, I'm in a room someplace. I don't know where
it is, or how I got here or what I'm
here for. I don't even know how long I've been here.
It's a big room, but it's funny. No doors, no
windows that I can see. It's just a couple of
chairs and a table with his phone on it.

Speaker 6 (02:09):
It's scared. Find me, find out what this is all about,
and get me out of here. Listen, this isn't a gag.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
Can't you tell you don't know what it's like, just
sitting here waiting, not knowing where or why or what's
gonna happen.

Speaker 6 (02:23):
Can't you trace this call or something?

Speaker 7 (02:26):
Okay?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Hang out?

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Oh thank heaven, I was afraid. Listen, I hear something.
Someone's coming up.

Speaker 6 (02:32):
Better hang up. I'll call you back later if I can't.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
How do you do?

Speaker 6 (02:42):
Who are you?

Speaker 8 (02:42):
My name's Helming, doctor John Helming, and your name I.

Speaker 6 (02:47):
Don't have to tell you anything.

Speaker 8 (02:49):
That's very true, although I didn't think you were aware
of it. I think I already know everything about you
that I'm interested in knowing.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Like what name? Joseph Watson, aged.

Speaker 8 (03:00):
Six, occupation, employee of the Acme Laundry, honorably discharged from
the Army six months ago with the Bronze Star and
the purple Heart.

Speaker 6 (03:10):
What so you cased me, went through my pockets? Huh?

Speaker 5 (03:15):
Well, if you know that much, you know I haven't
got any doll money.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
I'm not interested in money. What do you want?

Speaker 6 (03:21):
Then? Where is this place?

Speaker 5 (03:23):
The last thing I remember is making a delivery on
Spruce Street, noticing that the lights were out in the hall,
and hearing a noise behind me.

Speaker 6 (03:30):
You are somebody slug me, that's right?

Speaker 5 (03:33):
Or will you stop grinning like that and tell me
what this is all about?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Of course.

Speaker 8 (03:38):
I brought you here because I need your help in
an experiment, an experiment whose details I've already worked out
with mice and rabbits and cats and other animals.

Speaker 6 (03:49):
What kind of an experiment?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
An experiment in fear? Fair? Yes, you fought the war,
you were wounded.

Speaker 8 (03:57):
That means you've probably known fear and still you won
the bronze Star, which means you overcame it. Now the
question is can you overcome your present fears?

Speaker 6 (04:09):
What are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (04:11):
You're afraid.

Speaker 8 (04:13):
Nothing has happened to you yet, absolutely nothing, And yet
you are afraid, aren't you? You're afraid because your face
to face will be unknown because you don't know what
I want and what I'm planning to do, which is
as it should be.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
And that's the way we'll leave it for the moment.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
Hey, wait a minute, come back here, come back, you
can't hello, please, this is your watching again. Listen, I
got a little more tope. I don't know if it
will help, but there was a guy in here just now.

(04:53):
Said his name was Helming, John Helming.

Speaker 6 (04:55):
That's probably a phony.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
He's about fifty tall, over six foot, white hair and
gray eyes. No, I still don't know what it's all
about her, what he's after. But have you been able
to trace this number yet? How long will it take? Okay,
I'll hang on. The lights just went out. The room's
pitch dark, and somebody's coming in again. I better stop
for for feet's sake. Hurry, who's that.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Who just came in?

Speaker 8 (05:27):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Are you a girl?

Speaker 9 (05:31):
Keep away from me? Keep away?

Speaker 6 (05:33):
Do you hear?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Keep away?

Speaker 6 (05:35):
What's the angle?

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Now?

Speaker 9 (05:37):
Angle? Why did you bring me here?

Speaker 6 (05:41):
Wait a minute? You mean he put the snatch on
you too?

Speaker 10 (05:46):
When I was on my way home chloroform or something,
And the next thing I knew, why are you pretending here?

Speaker 9 (05:55):
In on it too?

Speaker 6 (05:55):
You must be. It's a trap to trap, all right,
But I'm not in it. I'm in it along with you.
My name is Watson, Joe Watson.

Speaker 9 (06:06):
I'm very grant you.

Speaker 6 (06:10):
Swear, I swear? What would I lie about it? For?
I wonder why he put you in here? Put us together?
Who is he?

Speaker 9 (06:20):
What's he going to do?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (06:22):
He said something about an experiment, an experiment and fear.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
But he listen.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
We've got to get out of here somehow, some ways.

Speaker 9 (06:32):
He might be listening.

Speaker 8 (06:33):
Very astute, my dear, of course, I'm list What where
are you right here in the dark?

Speaker 2 (06:40):
I've been here all the time.

Speaker 10 (06:41):
Why are you don't? He must want you to go
for him. He's probably got a gun.

Speaker 8 (06:47):
Right again, my dear, not that I'll need it. This
is stage two of the experiment. A new stimulus action
has been introduced. Man against the unknown has become man
and the woman against the unknown weck.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
Let's get down to breast tax be sensible about this, Thank.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
You, Joe. That's why I won't need my gun.

Speaker 8 (07:08):
This new stimulus has been negated by an increased sense
of responsibility, responsibility towards the girl and therefore by increased fear.

Speaker 5 (07:21):
Plus you kind of kind off.

Speaker 6 (07:22):
I get my hands on you.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Why are you?

Speaker 11 (07:24):
Whyriot outside now so you can relax. That was the
final stimulus in this stage injured pride, the discovery that
I could read your innermost thoughts. Knew exactly what you
were going to do. But you mustn't let that value.
I already know everything you're going to do from now.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
On till the end.

Speaker 5 (07:48):
Listen you Helming, Helming.

Speaker 6 (07:54):
He's got I know. Hold on, baby, don't let it
kitch you. There must be a way, some way.

Speaker 9 (08:04):
You suppose still listening.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
It's hard to say, but I'm going to take a chance.
There's one thing he didn't figure.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
On the telephone.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
Yes, if I can find it again in the dark,
it's over and here is I put through some calls
already to the police, told them what was happening, and
asked them to get me out of here. I had
to hang up both times before they could trace the
call and get this number.

Speaker 6 (08:32):
But this time, Hello, hello operator. What No, this isn't
the operator. You're on a busy wire.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
It doesn't matter, Thank Heaven, I got somebody. I've been
trying for about ten minutes.

Speaker 6 (08:41):
Now you'll get off the line.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Well you, I've got to get through to the police.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
It's terribly important.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
What you've got to help me, you've got you. My
name's Ben Lasarian. I'm a prisoner someplace. I don't know
where it was, it's true, strange house somewhere.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
A doctor who says his name is help me. What
are you laing at?

Speaker 8 (08:59):
What?

Speaker 12 (09:00):
I haven't got headquarters. I've got a guy that I'm sorry, Ben,
it's no use. We're in the same boat. You are,
a girl named Betty Grant myself.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
Helming's got us locked up to you. He said he
knew everything we were thinking, everything we were going to do.
I did get through to the police before, but I
guess he caught wise. We're talking to each other over
an insideline. Yeah, we're through.

Speaker 10 (09:28):
No, Joe, don't say that, don't even think it. Look
ask him exactly where he.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
Is just where are you, Ben? Do you know it's
hard to say.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
How was out called when he brought me here. It's
a kind of a hall of passageway, cement, floor, ceiling,
stone wall. There doesn't seem to be any door opening
or anything like that.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
That's what I thought here too, But there must be
wonder how would he have gotten you in there?

Speaker 6 (09:59):
Let's and start looking see if you can find it.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
That's true, I haven't thought of that.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
Now I do find the door that opens in.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
The way you are.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
That's right, three of us together, we'll surely be able
to figure something out.

Speaker 7 (10:10):
Then hold on, I'll start planning on the walls.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
You'll see if you hear anything.

Speaker 9 (10:14):
Go ahead, what's he doing?

Speaker 5 (10:16):
He's going to knock on the walls to see if
he's anywhere near us, and if he is, if he
can find a door we can get together.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
Hear anything?

Speaker 9 (10:26):
I'm not sure?

Speaker 5 (10:29):
Maybe I'm not sure either. Sounds awful far away?

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Is it there?

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Listen that wall right there?

Speaker 5 (10:39):
Hello?

Speaker 6 (10:39):
Hello, Ben, Yes, we heard you. You're right next to us.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Now, Ben, you listen, and Betty you'll knock back. Go ahead, Betty,
that way, Ben, you'll be able to tell just which wall.

Speaker 9 (10:49):
It is Okay, I hear it.

Speaker 6 (10:54):
I know where it is.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
Now to find the door if there is one.

Speaker 6 (10:58):
Hold on, he's got it. He's going to see if
there's a door.

Speaker 9 (11:01):
There must be one. There must be ben.

Speaker 6 (11:04):
Ben, Hello, what is it? Don't all gonna hurt a moan?

Speaker 9 (11:12):
No, Look, there is a door.

Speaker 10 (11:16):
It's opening.

Speaker 6 (11:17):
It's open, doctor Helming.

Speaker 13 (11:22):
Why, yes, were you expecting someone?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Well, now that you mentioned it, doctor, there was someone
we've been expecting and waiting for since we first heard
about that cozy little place of yours. I think he's
finally arived. He's a tall, rather striking gentleman with a
skull for a face, and his name is dead. Well,

(11:57):
let's see what's happening in the dark chamber. It's just
a moment later. Now, standing in the darkness of the
strange room, Joe and Betty stare at the tall figure
of doctor Helming, silhouetted against the dim light from outside.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
I asked you whether you were expecting someone?

Speaker 9 (12:18):
Then it was just a trick. It was you and
Pafoon all the time.

Speaker 6 (12:23):
Don't you think i'd know his voice?

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Where where is he?

Speaker 8 (12:26):
Our friend mister Lazarre right outside?

Speaker 6 (12:30):
What did you do do it.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
As me?

Speaker 6 (12:33):
Why did your toto?

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Don't you know?

Speaker 13 (12:35):
Sure?

Speaker 2 (12:35):
I know you kill him? Did you kill him? Write
a state you've gotten yourself into.

Speaker 8 (12:41):
Why is it because you finally tried to do something
about your predicament and failed? Or is it because you
weren't sure whether I would kill or not? And because
you still don't know? Oh?

Speaker 2 (12:53):
N really nay, you'll be interested.

Speaker 8 (12:57):
To know you have not done, nor will you do,
one thing that I did not foresee. Every move you made,
every emotion you felt, was charted outline that.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
I think is probably the police. The police.

Speaker 8 (13:17):
Yes, I know that you're very anxious to talk to them,
and I'll see that you get a chance to soon.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Good evening, officer.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
I'm looking for a guy named tell me doctor him.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
I'm doctor Helming. Come in, wont you okay? Thanks?

Speaker 7 (13:38):
This is it's kind of a funny business. It's about
a phone car we got a while ago. Finally traced
here the guy who said he was a prisoner or something.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
That must have been Watson.

Speaker 7 (13:49):
Yeah, yeah, that's his name, Joe Watson.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Do you know? Of course I can't tell you how
sorry I am.

Speaker 8 (13:55):
It was really very careless of me and I'll see
that it doesn't happen again. What do you mean you
didn't investigating, which I'm sure you did. Then you know
that I well, I don't run a sanitarium exactly, but
I do take a few patients mental cases for treatment.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Ah.

Speaker 8 (14:10):
So that's it, And I wish you wouldn't say that.
Watson's case is particularly interesting. A four F who wasn't
able to enlist, and he developed a persecution mania.

Speaker 7 (14:21):
I think that everyone is down on me, not everyone exactly.

Speaker 8 (14:24):
His present fantasy is that he's an x GI and
that I'm keeping him prisoner.

Speaker 7 (14:28):
Who so us plenty tough. Well, I guess I'll run along.
I am shudy.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
I bought it. Don't you want to see them? First
officer talked to them.

Speaker 7 (14:36):
There's no need of adductor. We get caughts and cranks
every day. Well, we always investigative cards.

Speaker 8 (14:41):
But I insist, after all, you only have my word
for it. Uh, there's when there's just one thing I'd
like to caution you about it.

Speaker 7 (14:50):
You should I know, I play along killing the.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Splendid right in here.

Speaker 7 (14:59):
Quite a room.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Oh it's a cop, and that means then you did
get my message.

Speaker 7 (15:05):
Sure, Joe took a little time to trace the car.
But everything's okay.

Speaker 6 (15:10):
Oh, thank heaven. It was such a screwy story.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
I was afraid that.

Speaker 5 (15:14):
Hey, wait a minute, then, why is he standing there
like that? Why haven't you got the bracelets on him?

Speaker 7 (15:21):
After the hearing?

Speaker 2 (15:22):
You don't need it either of stuff?

Speaker 7 (15:24):
He said it coming on quietly.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Why you're lying?

Speaker 9 (15:28):
I don't know why. But there's something wrong. Here's something.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
I know.

Speaker 9 (15:35):
You think we made the whole thing up.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
We're crazy, that's true.

Speaker 6 (15:40):
He told you we were, and you believed him.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Gosh, nothing, Look stop it. Well you stop saying that.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
If I could only prove it somehow, show you I know.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
But Sarry Joe murder.

Speaker 5 (15:53):
That'll open your eyes. Somewhere in that wall is a door.
Make him open it, show you what's behind it.

Speaker 7 (15:59):
I think, Man, we ad better be going die.

Speaker 8 (16:01):
But there is a door there, Officer, just a second,
I'll open it for you.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Here we are.

Speaker 9 (16:09):
Sure body it's gone.

Speaker 7 (16:15):
It's doctors are are the bodies? Turns to again? Later,
give us another thing. Eh. I shouldn't have said that. Hey,
can I go into this way down.

Speaker 8 (16:25):
Down to the end of the corridor, then you're right
I'm sorry. I gave you all this drop all right,
thank you for being so understanding.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Quite all right, goodbye.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Goodbye, Doc.

Speaker 10 (16:36):
Well children, don't look that way too, don't. I know
what you're thinking, and it's not true. We're not crazy.
There was a body there.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
You hit it when you went out to let the
copy in the telephone. You left that here purposely wanted
me to use it. Get the police here up there.
I told you that this was to be an experiment
and fear. What I didn't tell you was that, in
a sense, I was one of the subjects too.

Speaker 8 (17:09):
It was important for me to learn how I would
function under pressure and speaking objectively.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
I think I did rather well, don't.

Speaker 9 (17:17):
You Why are you doing all this? What are you after?

Speaker 8 (17:21):
There's no reason why I shouldn't tell you. If anyone
truly understands the nature of fear is able accurately to
forecast the actions and reactions of an individual, then he
can use fear as a weapon. Society will react as
the individual reactions. You see, Society doesn't want to believe
that anything can menace.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
It doesn't want.

Speaker 8 (17:44):
To take action to protect itself any more than the
individual does. This was something that Hitler and Mussolini understood intuitively, I.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Understand it scientifically. They failed, but I shall succeed.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
You meant you.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
I'm afraid.

Speaker 8 (18:03):
That's all I have time for as far as you
two concerned. The experiment is finished, completely finished. I have
a few arrangements to take care of and then, uh, well,
make the best of these last few minutes, for they
will be your last.

Speaker 9 (18:30):
Joe, do you hear anything? Is he coming back?

Speaker 6 (18:37):
Not yet?

Speaker 9 (18:39):
He's gonna kill us, isn't it just the way she
killed laserre.

Speaker 6 (18:47):
He's going to try to.

Speaker 9 (18:50):
Why are you sitting there like that looking at me?

Speaker 8 (18:54):
M hmm.

Speaker 6 (18:58):
I guess because it's the first chants I've had to
look at you.

Speaker 9 (19:02):
How do you mean?

Speaker 6 (19:04):
Well?

Speaker 5 (19:06):
When he first put you in here, it was all dark.
So many things happened after that. It's funny, what is
the things that you can tell about a person even
in the dark. I kind of thought you were a
little and I knew you were awful nice and had
a lot of nerve.

Speaker 6 (19:25):
But I didn't think you'd be so pretty.

Speaker 9 (19:29):
I'm not so pretty, Joe. I'm not very brave either.
I'm scared. I'm awful scared, and I don't wanna die,
don't worry.

Speaker 6 (19:42):
About a baby, don't think about.

Speaker 9 (19:45):
It, just sitting here like this, waiting and there's nothing
we can do. Every time we did try to do something,
it was something he knew about, was expecting us.

Speaker 10 (20:00):
Please, baby two, something happened to you.

Speaker 9 (20:06):
You were scared before too, but now I was not knowing.

Speaker 6 (20:10):
That was scary, not knowing what was going to happen
or why, or what you could do about it. But
once you do know, once you make.

Speaker 5 (20:20):
Up your mind, and you've got to forget about it,
forget about.

Speaker 9 (20:24):
Everything, make up your mind about what.

Speaker 5 (20:29):
This is going to sound kind of funny, especially now,
but well, do you have anyone special? Uh fellow?

Speaker 9 (20:39):
I mean why?

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Oh? I know that's good.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
I mean, once you it's a shame we never met before.
If we had, we wouldn't be here now. I I mean,
we probably would have been out together someplace. And what
time do you get through work?

Speaker 6 (20:58):
Usually?

Speaker 7 (20:59):
But six?

Speaker 9 (21:01):
Still closing at five thirty?

Speaker 6 (21:03):
Me too. I could have picked you up at about six.

Speaker 9 (21:08):
I hear something.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Coming.

Speaker 6 (21:13):
Yeah, okay, get up.

Speaker 5 (21:19):
Over in the corner of the room so that he'll
see you as soon as he opens the door.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
What about you.

Speaker 6 (21:25):
I'll be waiting over here behind the door.

Speaker 9 (21:27):
Joe y y, you're not going.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
I know I haven't got much much chance, but I'll
wish me luck then it'll be quick.

Speaker 9 (21:36):
Anyway, Oh no, Joe, please.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
You alright, my young friend.

Speaker 8 (21:41):
Time, all my arrangements have been completed, and I'm where's
what's right here?

Speaker 2 (21:51):
It's okay.

Speaker 5 (21:51):
Maybe didn't get me the barrel of the corner, good
lord got him and the chest bed.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
