Nico, you said you love thecore and your goal is to build this
team for championship aspirations. When youlook at the roster construction, what areas
would you say needs to improve forthis team? Really? I think we
have the pieces. I think wejust need to get better ourselves. Since
I've been here, I've always Isay, a but our front office staff,

(00:24):
we've always been looking to make itbetter. So we'll continue to do
that. But the core is intactyou are. If you look at our
top seven eight players that play thebiggest minutes, I don't see anything happening
with that. What moves do theDallas Mavers need to make during free agency
and as a trade for Tim Hardawayjunior on the horizon? And could this

(00:46):
free agent be a fit for theMavericks. This is Inside the MAVs.

Just about less than a week awayfrom the NBA Draft. Of course,
NBA free agency and the trade rumorsare heating up when it comes to
your Dallas Mavericks. No shortage ofrumors when it comes comes to this team,
fresh off an NBA Finals run, looking to improve this team going forward

(02:06):
and needing to put some pieces, additional ones around Luka Doncs and Kyrie Irving
to continue to increase the ceiling ofthis Mavericks team, who of course made
the NBA Finals for the first timesince twenty eleven, losing in five games
to the Bossons Celtics. For ateam that had an incredible season and has
a terrific foundation laid four, it'swhen we look at Luka Donci's the NBA

(02:30):
scoring champion a thirty four to nineto nine season, his running mate Kyrie
Irving averaging twenty five to five andfive on the year. The emergence of
Derek Lively the second, the terrificrookie out of Duke who was tremendous on
both ends of the floor. Thesignings of course of Dante Exhem and Derek
Jones Junior, particularly Derek Jones Junior, who will have some conversation about in

(02:51):
today's episode, and the priority thatthe Mavericks are making him according to GM
Nico Harrison, and what that meansfor the Mavericks going forward. Also of
course acquiring PJ. Washington and DanielGaffer, the core of this team being
in place as they continued to makeimprovements for this team, and how do
this team go about making improvements andwhat are we already hearing about what the

(03:14):
Maveris could potentially be interested in goinginto free agency, but also on the
trade market as we look at whatthe mavers are potentially wanting to do,
the Mavericks have made it a clearpriority that they want Dereck Jones Junior back.
In fact, Nicole Harrison, thegeneral manager and President of Basketball Operations,
talking about how much of our priorityDereck Jones Junior is going to be

(03:38):
in terms of being the one Aand one B for this team going into
this offseason. Here is Nico Harrisontalking about Derrick Jones Junior and the importance
of him going into this offseason. You mentioned keeping the top seven Ray players.
Obviously d Jones is included in thatgroup. What's your optimism as far
as being able to work something outwith him? And do you anticipate that

(04:00):
it will require some kind of tinkeringto be able to get to number Yeah,
I mean, I don't know howwe're going to do it, but
he's a priority. He's Priority one, one A and one B. I
think he fits in with our team, he loves it here, and we
have to figure out obviously the dynamicsto get him to stay. But yeah,
that's a priority and we'll do whatwe have to do to get it

(04:23):
done. So what are the otherpriorities? Is selling you mentioned one A
one B. No, I saidhe's one A and one B. Oh,
he's one A, he's both.I gots you. Yeah, So
you can see from Nico Harrison howimportant Derrick Jones Jia is going to be
for their priority during this offseason. The Mavericks are a projected tax team and
have only the five point one milliondollar tax mid level exception to sign Derrick

(04:46):
Jones Junior. Now they could potentiallycreate some extra room in order to bring
him back. And you say,Kevin, how are they able to do
that? I turned your attention toMark Stein, who of course covers the
NBA law long time NBA insider onsub stack. Now Tim Hardaway Junior,
who appeared in seventy nine games, averaging fourteen point four points per game,

(05:08):
the Mavericks are going to continue torenew their ability to try and trade the
now almost thirty two year old inorder to move him somewhere else. Tim
Hardway Junior, his sixteen point twomillion dollar contract is one of the team's
few big trade assets because it's anexpiring deal going into this upcoming season.
And of course Tim Hardaway fell outof the Mavericks rotation during the postseason.

(05:31):
And you have already seen on socialmedia, how was daddy's out here popping
off at the mouth about him andwanting to see his son in a different
place to have an opportunity to havea fresh start for his career, liking
posts on the idea that Tim HardawayJunior in Mexico. Whatever you have seen
so far, it has nothing beenas shorts in terms of what you've seen

(05:54):
in terms of Tim Hardaway Senior expressinghis displeasure and wanted to see his son
go somewhere else. But the Maverickshave a chance with that expiring contract to
move it on somewhere else to beable to create the requisite room to bring
back Derrick Jones Junior. Where you'retrying to get, I would imagine above
the ten million dollar mark in orderto get that full mid level exception to

(06:16):
bring back Derrick Jones Junior, whoof course became a real part of this
team in terms of his defense andhis knocking down of his three pointers a
career over thirty four percent shooting fromthe three point line this season for DJJ,
and of course his ability to finishand transition. The high flyer and
former dunk champion found a real homefor himself and the Mavericks this past season,

(06:40):
and de York Jones Gior eve betalking about that throughout the postseason about
how much he wants to remain inDallas. There will be plenty of suitors
for him during this free agency periodbecause of how much more he has increased
his value on the open market giventhe skill set that he was able to
show in full bloom with the DallasMavericks, and you give Dallas credit for
putting him in position to be ableto show those strengths that he displayed throughout

(07:03):
the course of the year, andmost importantly the culture allowing Derek Jones Junior
to flourish. Derek Jones Junior hastalked about it plenty throughout the course of
the season as well, that hehad to earn everything that Jason Kidd was
not going to hand him a startingrole, and give credit to Jones,
he went out and took it andbecame a really important piece to this team.

(07:24):
So when you look at what theMavericks have from an asset standpoint,
they got the sixteen point two milliondollar expiring contract of Tim Hardaway Junior at
thirty two years of age. Theycan move that on to try and find
someone who will take on that moneyand be able to benefit from the expiring
contract. We mentioned with the fivepoint one mid level exception that they have
right now looking to increase that inorder to retain one A one B in

(07:48):
terms of Derek Jones Junior. Bythe time we get to the NBA Draft,
the Mavericks will also have it's twentytwenty five and twenty thirty one first
round picks available to trade, sothey do have some things to be able
to work with in order to potentiallyimprove this roster. The question being who
do they decide to bring in totry and improve this roster, which is

(08:09):
important given what the Mavericks are goingto be needing. Another guy that can
defend but also can shoot from thethree point line to allow them to take
some pressure off of Luca Dodgers andKyrie Irvy not only from a ball handling
standpoint, but be better at thepoint of attack defensively but also knock down
threes, especially with the amount ofopen opportunities that Luke and Kyrie are going

(08:30):
to provide. That player and whatthey're able to do within the Mavericks offense
and most importantly on the defensive end, be able to continue to help this
team improve where they became one ofthe best defenses in the league, but
they did not have enough shooting whenit came to the postseason to really compete,
obviously with the likes of the BostonCeltics in particular, who bombed away
from the three point line even thoughthey didn't shoot the ball well great from

(08:52):
three, they made enough threes inenough key spots to be able, of
course, to take out the Maveris, aside from the fact that Austin was
just a better team in this particularNBA Finals. More on this though,
on a couple of names already surfacingbeing linked to the Dallas Mavericks that could
potentially be a fits. One aquote unquote perfect fit according to this person,

(09:16):
and one already being reported as onehaving interest from the Mavericks to potentially
join them this summer as an unrestrictedfree agent, potentially in a sign and
trade. But before we get there, let's hear from today's sponsor of our

the description back here on inside theMask, Thank you to today's sponsor for

(11:05):
our video and our podcast in Aura. As the Mavericks continue their preparations for
their off season, looking to improvetheir team after making the NBA Finals for
the first time since twenty eleven, falling short to the Boston Celtics. As
we get ready for the NBA Draftbut also for NBA free agency, this
team needing to find some floor spacingforwards and some three and D perimeter depth

(11:28):
as well to continue to round outthis roster around on Luca Dongis and Kyrie
Irving to continue to improve the ceilingof this team going into this upcoming season
as well. And we're already hearingsome names be potentially linked to the Dallas
Mavericks. I put it out thereon Twitter on some of the names that
y'all are wanting to see potentially beadded to the team. I've seen names

(11:52):
like Denny Advia, Colin Sexton amongothers that folks of the Maverickson fans that
are wanting to see be added tothis team. How they round out this
roster based on the assets that theyhave available to them will be interesting to
see based off of what they arecapable of doing and more importantly, how
aggressive Nico Harris is going to continueto be in fixing this roster. We

(12:13):
know that he has not been shyand his ability to improve this team and
his willingness to improve this team, says taking over as general manager and president
of Basketball Operations, he will remainaggressive and it's going to be important for
him in this front office to continueto have that same mentality, because it's
different when you're the hunter trying togo after winning a championship. And not

(12:35):
to say that they're not continuing togo after a championship, but now they
are definitely going to be the huntedgoing into this upcoming season. So if
the Mavericks' front office keeps that samemindset by still remaining aggressive in terms of
the moves that they are wanting tomake, while also understanding that teams are
gunning for them based on moves thatwe have already seen be made by the

(12:56):
Oklahoma City Thunder, for example, getting a two time All Defense player and
Eric Alex Caruso excuse me to jointheir roster after Caruso was traded to the
Chicago bull straight up for Josh GidtyAlix, Caruso providing much more defensive intensity
and improve defense for a team inOklahoma City that was already one of the
best defensive teams in the league. They still got to find a little bit

(13:18):
more shooting as well, but atthe same time, the example being that
Alix Caruso is a move by theThunder to be able to strengthen their position
as one of the best teams inthe West, and they were able to
do so by moving on from aJosh Giddy who fell out of the rotation
and was relegated to the bench andwas going to be part of the Thunder
bench going into this upcoming season.Mavericks looking to do something similar by moving

(13:41):
off for Tim Hardaway Junior to aguy who fell out of the rotation in
terms of the playoffs, but alsonecessarily was not being able to be played
on the floor. Nico Harrison talkingabout how the Mavericks feel like they have
the pieces in place for this team, but now how do they continue to
make those movements going forward. Takea listen, Nko, you said you

(14:03):
love this core and your goal isto build this team for championship aspirations.
When you look at the roster construction, what areas would you say needs to
improve for this team. Really,I think we have the pieces. I
think we just need to get betterourselves. Since I've been here, I've
always I say all but our frontoffice staff, we've always been looking to

(14:28):
make it better. So we'll continueto do that. But the core is
intact you are. If you lookat our top seven eight players that play
the biggest minutes, I don't seeanything happening with that. So the mavers
believe that their top seven eight piecesare good and the core of their foundation
is in place. And we talkedabout with Darren Jones Jr. Being a

(14:48):
part of that core for this teamand the Mavericks making him a priority to
bring back this offseason as well tobe a part of the team going forward.
But what other names could be outthere that are quote unquote perfect fits
or guys are going to be availablein unrestricted free agency that could be making
a difference for this team if theMavericks decided to go down that road.

(15:09):
I point you toward thirty two,and you're about to be thirty two year
old Tobias Harris, a guy whoaveraged nearly eighteen points over six and a
half rebounds of three point one assistsfor the Sixers this past season. Philadelphia,
of course, trying to figure outwhat they're going to do next to
continue to build around Joel ANDBII.It looks like they're not going to be
a part of the Paul George sweepstakes. That whole saga in and of itself

(15:33):
has to be dealt with by theLos Angeles Clippers. By the way,
that was a name that Mavericks fanswere tossing around in my menches as a
guy that they would want to cometo the Mavericks. That would be a
crazy fit for the Mavericks that theywere able to get a guy like Paul
Deorge, but he is going tobe obviously commanding a ton of money,
But for a guy in Tobias Harris, who we heard reported from Chris Haynes,

(15:54):
who will hear from here in justa moment, reporting that the guy
who just finished his five year dealwith the Philadelphia seventy six ers now it
has a chance to get into freeagency to move on. We have heard
from Chris Haynes that the Mavericks areone of the teams interested in the service
from Tobias Harris. And if youdon't believe me. Here's Chris Haynes detailing

(16:18):
it on Bleacher Reports himself. Takea listen. You know you got teams
that I expect to have some interestin Tobias. I will mention you know,
Utah, Detroit, San Antonio,Dallas and New Orleans. You know
Dallas Norrens. Those will probably haveto be signing trade type scenarios. But

(16:40):
those are teams that I'm hearing thatare expected to have some level of interest
in Tobias Harris this summer. Andso Harris, coming off a five year,
one hundred and eighty million dollar contractwith the Philadelphia seventy six ers,
could be a candidate and a signand trade for the Dallas Mavericks. As
you heard him say. Their teamslike the Detroit Pissons, New Orleans Pelicans,

(17:03):
and San Antonio Spurs, all inUtah Jazz are all expected to have
interest in Harris. And he providesan interesting case because the question would be
what kind of market are we talkingabout for Harrison? Is he a guy
about to be at thirty two yearsof age, who Chris Hayne says,
is motivated to prove people wrong,be a fit with Dallas. We know
that he can shoot the ball fromthree, can't put the ball on the

(17:25):
floor, and can provide you areally legitimate third scoring option alongside Luca Donston,
Kyrie Irvin. The question will behow does he hold up and does
he have the mindset to be ableto succeed in the postseason where the pressure
is obviously going to be on.And if you're thinking about the Maveris and
what they have in terms of theircore, they've got guys now in terms
of Daniel Gafford and PJ. Washingtonand others who have been able to step

(17:48):
up in the postseason. While nothaving that tremendous amount of experience going into
this past postseason, Harris provides youa lot of that experience having been there
in the playoffs. Now has theopportunity now to be a part of a
team that can help increase the ceiling. That's something that would have to be
determined in terms of its value, where if you're looking at the open market,
maybe a three year, forty fivemillion dollars deal in terms of fifteen

(18:12):
million dollars per season, maybe that'ssomething reasonable that the Mavericks could potentially do.
The question would be how do theycontinue to create the requisite room to
be able to do that. That'swhere we're talking about potentially a sign and
trade, where you're looking about salariessuch as Tim Hardaway junior Maxi Kleeblan who's
in the middle of a three year, thirty million dollar deal, Josh Green
who signed a contractor sension prior tothis season as well. What kind of

(18:36):
trade pieces are the Mavericks potentially lookingat and utilizing in order to move on.
You're going to need spacing development aswell from at least one big as
well to be able to help withsome of that. So we're talking about
multiple needs that this team has withthe assets that they're dealing with here.
We mentioned a little bit earlier thatthe Mavericks have their twenty twenty five and

(18:56):
twenty to thirty one first round picksavailable to draft oh Charlotte a top two
protective pick of course, in thefirst pick in the first round in twenty
twenty seven, and Brooklyn an unprotectedpick in the first round in twenty twenty
nine, So they don't have controlof their picks when you look at the
years twenty twenty seven to twenty thirty. Of course, they've had to make
these moves in order to put themselvesin this position, and you're looking at

(19:19):
the first round swaps in twenty twentyeight, in twenty thirty, those two
first round picks at twenty five andthirty one are potential utilization pieces for the
Mavericks going forward here, but allthe question will be how much more can
this team improve? Is Tobias Harris, a guy who shot over thirty five
percent from three a fit for theMavericks on the surface base off of his

(19:41):
numbers shooting nearly forty nine percent fromthe field this past season for Philadelphia.
He provides you a legitimate third scoringoption for the Mavericks. Then we also
take a look at a guy inJeremy Grant. Now, Jeremy Grant is
the quote unquote perfect fit from KevinO'Connor. If you look at one of
his recent pieces talking about the DerekWhite All Stars in terms of players that

(20:04):
could be tradeable pieces to teams thatare contending and looking to get themselves over
the top, and the Dallas Mavericks, who see Jeremy Grant right now,
who there's been reported interest in himover the last couple of years or so,
A guy that's importantly right now inthe middle of a five year,
one hundred to sixty million dollars deal, going to be making over twenty nine

(20:25):
million dollars this upcoming season. TheMavericks would have to move to get him
as well. And again we're talkingabout the amount of money that the Mavericks
are potentially dealing with here. Butif he is a guy for some Mavericks
fans who could be a potential fitas well, Jeremy Grant could make some
sense given the fact that he's aguy that can score, has a lot
of talent in his ability to scoreand receiving kickout passes from Luca Dodge and

(20:49):
kybri Irvy, could really be afit alongside with the Mavericks here. He
would get a lot of open looksin this offense for the Mavericks. But
at the same time, are youwilling to commit to a guy who's going
to be well over thirty by thetime that contract ends, and it's an
ascending contract by the time you getto the end of Grant's deal. Of
that five year, one hundred andsixty million dollars deal, in the final

(21:11):
year of it, we're talking abouthim making over thirty six million dollars as
he continues to get older. Isthat something if you're the Mavers you wanted
to invest in Now there are otherpie in the sky ideas like a Michel
Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, whowould be a perfect ideal three and D
guy for the Mavers who's terrific onthe defensive end and has turned himself into

(21:32):
a terrific score as well. Butyou're going to have to give up a
boatload of assets to even get theNets to even have that conversation, which
in a lot of ways they've beenunseious with over the past year or two
when it comes to the conversation aroundBridges. But that just gives you an
idea of some of the names thatare potentially out there and what other names

(21:53):
could be floating around for the Mavers, who've got the assets to be able
to deal with some of this insome form or fashion, but at the
same time still limited. Now,if they're willing to continue to spin into
the Luxury Tax and be a secondtax apron team, then that could open
up some things for them from aroster standpoint. But part of this in
this new era of the NBA isthat you've got to be able to develop

(22:17):
talent young, cheap talent to producefor you for years to come. And
that is why it was so importantto see the success of Daniel Gafford and
PJ. Washington because there are twoguys at twenty five years of age under
controllable contracts that are still on theascent. We believe for this Mavericks team
going forward and your ability to seea Derek Live of the second who now
at twenty years of age, hasturned himself into a terrific player in his

(22:41):
rookie year and again appears to beon the ascent as both an offense and
a defensive player. You've got tohave cheap, young talent to be able
to surround your superstars. And here'ssomething that we'll have to get into as
we not only talk about this summerin terms of the free agency and the
trade moves that the Mavericks could potentiallymake also going into next year as well,
because if you remember, at theend of this upcoming season, Luka

(23:04):
Doncis is going to be eligible tosign for what right now is a five
year, nearly three hundred and sixtyeight million dollar contract extension which will give
him the richest contract in the historyof this league, and not to mention
Kyrie Irving already at thirty two yearsof age, is going into that second
year of his three year deal aswell. Do we start talking about a

(23:26):
potential contract extension for Kyrie Irving duringthis upcoming season or at the end of
next year as well, in orderto keep him around going forward for the
Mavericks, Because those are things asyou start looking at the financial ramifications of
what they are trying to do tocontinue to extend this window for the MAXs
in terms of a championship opportunity, but also looking toward the future in terms

(23:48):
of paying Luka Doncic, but alsowhen it comes to Kyrie Irving as well,
it's going to be important that thepieces that they add are cost effective
pieces young talent that cannot only mainlong term with this team, but also
fit into the time lines of LucaDodgers and Kyrie Irving given what this Maveris
team is going to have to figureout going forward as well. So those

(24:10):
are a couple of other interesting nuggetsthat you've got to keep in mind when
you're thinking about not just from anasset standpoint, what they may need to
utilize in order to acquire certain piecesin order to move on from a Tim
Hardaway junior. You've got some secondround picks that you can utilize as well.
But at the same time, thinkingabout the financial sense of all of
this when it comes to Luka Doncicat the end of this upcoming season,

(24:33):
and also Kyrie Irving as well, thinking about another contract extension for him for
him to remain around long term aswell. But we know what the needs
of this team are in terms ofanother playmaker, another guy that can score
while continuing to add defense, butalso finding a way to shed that contract
of Tim Hardaway Junior, whose contract, of course is an expiring one going

(24:56):
into this upcoming year. And ifthey can, the Mavericks can be in
phys position. Of course, theydon't have a first round pick in this
year's NBA draft. They got thelast pick in this year's draft. Is
what a number fifty eight. Weknow about the rumors of Ronnie James and
whether or not the Mavericks will potentiallydraft him if he's available there, But
the overall point being is that thereare some things that this team can do

(25:17):
creatively and it will be interesting tosee over the next several days as we
get closer to the end of June, what pieces and names will be connected
to this team given the assets thatthey have, what they can potentially use
to acquire those assets, and whetheror not they'll be able to create the
requisite room to remain competitive to providean offer to Derreck Jones Junior to stay

(25:37):
within Dallas. You heard Nico Harrisondiscuss it that they're not sure how they're
going to do it when it comesto retaining the services of Derrick Jones Jr.
But they want to do so andthat is their number one priority this
offseason from a roster management standpoint. So a lot to be figured out and
discussed over the next several days whenit comes to this team and what names

(25:59):
will be connected moving forward. Butif anything else, we know that the
Mavericks will remain aggressive in terms oftheir ability to try and improve this team.
And now moving forward, who, what and how the Mavericks will do
It will be an interesting watch acrossthe rest of the league knowing now that
the target is firmly on the Mavericksback having reached the NBA Finals, and

(26:22):
that to me is the most fascinatingpart about All of this is how the
Mavericks will attack this offseason being thehunted versus being the hunter and making sure
that this team stays where it needsto be in terms of a championship opportunity
window remaining open around the superstar onLuca Doncis. But all of that will
factor in over the coming days aswe get closer to the NBA Draft,

(26:45):
and of course in NBA free agencyand the trade market and more. Plenty
of more on this when it comesto the Mavericks out the course of the
next couple of weeks as we getready for the NBA Draft and NBA free
agency. Do it for this episodeof Inside the Masks Again, thank you
