Planning to spend a bunch of moneyin the off season, and there would
be salary cap constraints anyway. I'mjust sure we're going to spend all the
money we have in off season. That gets to the question that with new
ownership, with the Adamson and Dumontfamilies, what's your sense of their commitment
to spending what would be necessary onthe player's salary front to go where the
franchise wants to go. Yeah,I don't think money's going to be an

(00:23):
object. I think it's doing itthe right way. Bringing in people with
good character. Their money is notgoing to be the limiting factor they want
to win. We're going to besmart about it though, But I don't
expect we're not having money conversations. The Mavericks make a move to move on

(00:45):
from Tim Hardaway Junior, Could KlayThompson or Countavious Callwell Pope be on the
way as well. A lot toget into on this episode of Inside the
MAVs. Welcome to Inside the masspresented by Aura. I'm your host,

(01:53):
he's with the Slovenian national team asthey get ready for their friendly before they
get ready for their qualifying tournament totry to get to the Olympics. Grant
asked that joining me here on theprogram, Grant, what's going on?
Not much? Definitely a very loudenvironment in the pre game, but when
a trade gets made, you definitelygot to talk about him for sure.

(02:15):
For sure, And for folks whodon't know where exactly are you with respect
to getting ready for the Slavenian gametoday, Yeah, I think you know,
with the trade itself, I thinkdefinitely was a relative framework of what
we kind of expected, I wouldsay, And like the last I guess

(02:37):
you know, a couple of weeksor a week or so where you know
the Mavericks were likely going to tryto find a way to reduce their spending
obligations, you know, whether tokeep Dereck Jones junior by unlocking that non
taxpayer mid level exception with twelve pointnine million dollars, it's a huge difference
going from I believe five point threemillion dollars with the taxpayer mid level.

(02:57):
That definitely positions you much better torentin a key player coming off a career
year and also opens up the optionsof you know, some of the recently
reported things as well too, likeContavious Paul Well, Pulph Klay Thompson,
those are some names of the Mavericks. You know, it seems like they're
exploring other options as well to makeupgrades, whether you know, not not

(03:19):
just being content with like oh,we're just automatically gonna prioritize bringing back Derek
Jones, but at least keeping theoptions open for alternative upgrades and you know,
whether those are available or not orfeasible. Definitely seems like they are
pursuing like that exploratory like like kindof just seeing what's out there with the
feelers of you know, what's feasibleto get this guy who has interests you

(03:44):
know things of that nature. Sodefinitely, you know, a trade that
opens up options and I think isoverdue because Tim Hardaway, I think since
the Kyrie trade especially, it's veryhard to play him with extended stretches next
to Kyrie and Luca, and ashe would have entered next season as the
third highest paid player, he's kindof been that in the last while as

(04:04):
well, and you're not getting thirdbest player impact. I know it's not
as simple as that, but that'skind of, you know, one of
the ways to view it for sure. Yeah, the Mavericks moving on with
three second round picks to Detroit inexchange for Quinton Grimes, a twenty twenty
five second via Toronto and two twentytwenty eight seconds in the deal. So

(04:26):
Tim Hardaway Junior after five and ahalf seasons, moving on to Detroit and
coming back as a twenty four yearold in Quinton Grimes, a guy who
per thirty six minutes shoots nearly eightthrees per thirty six minutes, has shot
over thirty seven percent for his careerfrom the three point line, had some
injuries that he dealt with when hewas in Detroit last year after coming over
from New York. What kind ofplayer are the Mavericks getting in terms of

(04:50):
Quinton Grimes, who we think canbe a guy that can help out on
the defensive end as well with hissize in his frame. Yeah, I
think he's an impactful you know,he's got a the at least the basics
of the three and D talent. You know, someone that is a motion
shooting option. Uh, you know, I think, uh, I think

(05:10):
you know that is definitely a layerthat you would like to fill the void
of when you have someone going outin a trade like Tim Hardaway Junior.
I think he's an impactful hombo defender, definitely a better one by a considerable
margin compared to Tim Tim as well. So I think, you know,
you know, you're getting the basicsof what you would want. And I

(05:31):
think there are some challenges still withthe roster overall, but I like his
skill set. The thing that youkind of have to solve for is you
still have a lot of six footfive or shorter players that you have to
five minutes for, which I mean, not a bad problem to have,
but you know, if Olivia Maxon'sprosper develops buying the minutes, it gets

(05:53):
even more complicated because you have toat the current like constructions roster, you
have guys like Dante X, JadenMarty as you know, ball handling options
that can play off the ball aswell. You have you know, Josh
Green on the roster and now youhave Quinton's Grime. So that's all that's
four players there where it seems likewhether it's like uh with with you know,

(06:15):
Jay Hardy entering his third year, that might be tough for him to
be in a position where you know, you want your career to really elevate,
you know, in your third yearDante X, he's you know,
signed on a cheap deal again,so you can kind of get away with
doing it in your last year wherecycle minutes like a lot. But I

(06:38):
think uh definitely might be a solidlike where you know a player in the
side of trade, you know,it could be a lot of auption that's
a little taller unless you're really reallyuh no for sure. And for Grimes

(06:59):
at six with five two hundred andten pounds, decent point of attag defender,
as we mentioned, can shoot theball a little bit from Three's to
be interesting to see how he continuesto get integrated and it's It's interesting because
some of the comments that we've seenfrom Mavericks fans feel like Grimes is the
kind of player that they thought JoshGreen was going to be when he was
initially drafted from Arizona. Green hasturned into a little bit kind of a
different player since coming into the lead, more of an energy guy. He

(07:21):
does have a little bit of athree that he's developing more, but Grimes
fits more the idea I think ofwhat the Mavericks want to do from a
defensive and an offensive standpoint, sothat they can be able to handle things
with respect to that. So it'dbe interesting to see how Grinds will fit
in and what his role will bebased off of what you mentioned with Dante
exhim as well. His three pointone five million dollars will be guaranteed for

(07:43):
the Mavericks as well, so he'sgoing to be a part of this roster
going forward. Now, what kindof morgym nastis can Nico Harrison in his
front office be able to do giventhe fact that they've now moved on from
Tim Hardaway Junior and now they've gottena younger player who can potentially fit much
better with this roster going forward.More on this when it comes not only
to the Tim Hardaway Junior trade, but also reports Contavious Calwell, Pope Klay

(08:07):
Thompson. Could they also be potentialmavericks as well? The reporting on that.
But before we get there, let'shear from today's sponsor of our video

Kevin Gray to start your two weekfree trial. Please see the link in
the description. Back here on Insidethe Mass, thank you for hanging out
with us through us by in today'svideo podcast partner in or Kevin Gray here
with Grant as set as the Mavericksmake the move to move on from Tim
Hardi Junior acquiring Quinton Grimes has inthree second round picks over to Detroit to

(10:05):
make that move happen, and ofcourse it opens up more money for the
Mavericks to what Derek Jones Junior isfor the Mavericks is one A, one
B priority according to Nico Harrison forthis team going forward from there. So
it'll be interesting to see how they'reable to go ahead and move forward with
that, but also what that meansfor the rest of this team and Grant
we are getting more reporting when itcomes to potential other players when it comes

(10:30):
to this Mavericks team, which arevery interesting and will start with one that
is kind of interesting given the factthat the Denver Nuggets, who were of
course the reigning NBA champions before losingof course to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the
Eastern or the Western Conference semi finals. Contavious Calwell Pope has declined his player
option and is now an unrestricted freeagent, and Mark Stein, longtime NBA

(10:52):
insider of course riding for Substack, now reports that there could be mutual interest
between the Mavericks and KCP, who'sa two time NBA champion, to try
to get something done. Now that'sinteresting because I don't know how willing the
Nuggets would be to play ball withthe Mavericks. Given the fact that it
would probably take a sign and tradein order to meet the number that CACP
is looking for. But what doyou think about KCP as a potential fit

(11:15):
for the Mavericks and what they couldtry to do to maybe work something out
for him to be a part ofthis thing, Because I would think he
would be a perfect fit based onhis skill set and what the Mavericks would
need from him at that position.Yeah, I think if you're looking at
like obviously like past the logistics,so like what road it would take to
get the guy and everything, justthe skill set, I think it'd be
a very good fit. I think, you know, with the Mavericks,

(11:39):
you know, since the Kyrie trade, have lean Moore into like playing out
of handoffs and different actions. Ithink a movement shooter, someone who's used
to playing in the driple handoff game, you know, like say call well
both. I think that could haveopened up some extreming options, you know
for the offense. Perhaps that couldbe a potential offers of toy for Derek

(12:00):
Lively to expand as a dribble handoffdig a little bit more as well too,
whether you're playing uh, you know, off the elbows or just in
delay sets where you know he hasthe ball at the top of the key
and you're just kind of getting intothe offense. ACP is potentially like coming
off the pin down in the corneror something like that, and Derrick Bodley's
handing off like the cmax and stuff, and he just colicked the shoot the
ball. That that could be aninteresting layer because you know, having shooting

(12:24):
threads like that goes a long way, whether they're like dynamic off the dribble
players or not, because it makesthe opposing team have to really consider working.
Like even Sam powisrom the NBA Finals, you don't think of it was
like a massive thread, like obviouslyoff the dribble, but like you can't
find a if you're trying to,he might just like the second attention,

(12:50):
he's gonna come off with a handoffor a hindown and you're kind of in
trouble if you're thinking you can fallasleep a little bit or you're just a
lapse. So that's the type ofyou know, shooting thread that they hoped
Tim Hardaway Junior could be. ButI think he was a little too up
and down and I think he's notnecessary like he's an effective shooter, but
I think he also is a littlebit of a rhythm player where he's got

(13:11):
to have, you know, someopportunities to you know, put the ball
on the floor for his confidence, and I don't think that's something you have
to worry about necessarily. What youtake is called love hope. I also
think he's a you know, impactfullong ball defender. One thing you have
to worry about a little bit though, is with him being in his dirties.
You know, if you're giving himthe long term field on Tyson the
cup or are you confident and thatwill sustained in the long run. I

(13:33):
don't know. That's that's why MikoHarrison has that job as a CM.
So a lot of those considerations youhave to you know, like definitely bring
into the mix. But uh,I think on the surface, entering the
upcoming season, he would definitely bea healthful player and provide a different skill
set because you at least have playerson the bench you can turn to like
Kante Exam and then depending on youknow, maybe Josh s Green that you

(13:56):
can give a different skill set,but also depends on who you give up
and to sign a trade because Denver, As you said, it would have
to be enticed. I don't knowif it's mostly salary filler, but we're
at a point where Tim Hard wouldbe traded that you kind of have to
give a rotation player up if youare doing a trade of his nature.
So that would definitely adjust a littlebit of how you look at it from

(14:18):
a rotation standpoint, if you aregiving up a player like a Josh Dream
in a trade, which I mean, honestly, I think Josh Green's developed
well over the last you know, recent years, ever since being benched in
the you know, the twenty theprevious conference finals run. But I think
overall you would have to consider withhim if you can get an upgrade,

(14:41):
you know, risk reward over thenext couple of years. Do you think
Davis callboll Pope is a better playerin still two or three years. If
you think that, then I thinkthat makes the most sense because Kyrie Irving
has a limited window as someone alsoin his thirties as well, Like,
for all we know, he couldbe great at thirty five, thirty six,
and you know, we're kind oflike how Lebron's been with like being

(15:01):
great at thirty nine thirty eight, whatever, thirty seven, thirty six,
all those years, so we maynot have to worry about that as much.
But you want to make the mostof the Hall NBA first team player
like Luca, having a running matelike Kyry Irving, and then hopefully you
just don't run into the Boston Celticsagain. That's that's else, but definitely

(15:22):
just one of those things that youyou know, have to consider making upgrades
when it's possible, but you don'twant to get too old because we have
seen the benefit of athleticism with thisteam and Josh Streen is as athletic as
against same with you know, DerrickJones junior as well. Yeah, and
this is a young team that theMavericks are putting together based off of their
current roster that they have Contavi's Callwell, Hope Declinable was a fifteen point four

(15:46):
million dollar player option for next year. And it's interesting because you look at
the timeline that he would fit.He would be a win now type of
player that the Mavericks are looking forgiven the window that they're opening. If
you're watching us and listening to this, the idea, I think that folks
need to start to take with themgoing forward, is the Mavericks see an
opportunity in a window that's open nowto be able to try to add some
players that can help them win basedoff of the timeline that they have,

(16:08):
because we talk about the future assetsthat they have, they don't have control
of their picks between twenty twenty sevenand twenty thirty. So you've got to
be able to maximize your window withthe capital that you have, and if
it means getting a little bit olderplayer but can help you win right now
based on the framework that you haveto work in in terms of the time,

(16:29):
that may be something that you lookat, whether you're thinking about Katavious
Calwell Pope, if you're talking aboutJeremy Grant from the Blazers, or as
we'll talk about right now, KlayThompson apparently entering the mix when it comes
to this discussion as well, MarkStein again reporting that the Mavericks could be
interested in bringing in Klay Thompson, which for a lot of people thinking,
Okay, is Clay washed? Ishe? This? Is he that?

(16:52):
But one thing that he still isis a devastatingly good three point shooter.
As we saw from this past season. Once again, even with his advanced
age and a little bit of declineobviously in terms of the defensive skills.
Mark Stein's saying that league sources aretelling him that the Mavericks, with some
newfound financial flexibility after securing the TimHardaway junior trade, are another team intent
on exploring, quote the feasibility ofThompson signing once he makes it to free

(17:18):
agency. Your thoughts on Klay Thompson, Yes, that Klay Thompson being a
potential fit with the Dallas Mavericks basedoff what we're hearing here. Yeah,
I think with Klay Thompson definitely, and he's gonna have I think, but

(17:41):
I think when you're in a positionthat he is in the top player kind
of sets the talk for your positionor that general group. And Paul George
his future matters a lot. Wedon't really see much of Orlando conversation.
It seems like the Philadelphia seven tosix ers, which has some overlap between
the two guys. He's not necessarilyteam I'll go there. So in a

(18:04):
way, if the Warriors potentially thatpushes play out or depending on however they
want to proach the trait stereo,if it's even feasible. But I think
if you look at this competition overallin the market, contavious pro while pulping
him the name as well, becausehe's not as accomplished as play possible his

(18:26):
career, but she were potentially,uh you know, more consistent. I
guess you would say at this pointof the career, maybe shots play Orlando
wants to favor. So I thinkyou know now that we've gotten that like
kind of like the landscape of youknow what the market they look like,

(18:48):
you get like the terms of competition, uh you know other teams they m
point presents an intriguing option where evenwhen he's at his lowess as a player,
he's still you always have to entertain. He's not the defender used to

(19:14):
be. But I think if youhave him next to the playmate girl and
Kyrie Herman, there's a lot ofcreativity you can get with those guys in
the half court. Derek Glove isgoing to get better. But I think
another element of it all is youwould have to get a little more out
of Pija Washington as a little bitmore of a feature guy because if you
just do a look at how theCeltics guarded the mass they were staying home

(19:37):
on shooters anyways in the corners. So Clay Thompson's not gonna get left over.
Defenses don't do that unless they haveto fully commit to help and just
not think about, oh I'm dayThompson open. So I think the struggle
that you would have there is youwould still need a third player outside of
Clay Thompson. Uh, you know, in addition to Luka Kyrieid to step

(19:59):
by and kind of you know, fill in the void of that needed scoring
boots throughout a course of the highstakes playoff game, which he has shown
Pittonville to doing at times against theOklahoma City Thunder the Bard of Hopen shooting
when the defense was pre rotating andlike really sending a low man early.
But they were time where he wasfeatured in the post against the Mispatch like

(20:22):
Jacbs Alexander. So I think youwould need to explore ways to build a
little more out of DJ's game offensively, and I think that would take some
off season development because he has flashes, but he's I don't think he's shown
quite yet either the comfort level inthe offense or just like maybe a need
to develop a little bit more incertain areas, Like we don't really know

(20:45):
the psychology of course, so it'slike, you know, that's just up
to interpretation. But I think that'sprobably something you would need if you do
a quiet play. But then alsoI'm assuming you know you're one to three
as Kyrie will go to play, that means you're losing your point of a
tax defender that guarded the top playeron a nightly basis, I think arguably

(21:06):
more than anybody else in the NBAbased off tracking metrics, if not just
as much as anybody else. Sothat's something we have to ask yourself.
Does play pick up the toughest primitiveplayer does meet in Washington? And then
that gets into a little bit ofa complicated scenario because that would make him
hop to really work like defensively whenI think botha state has actually had other

(21:27):
players tick that responsibility and actually allowthem to pick a spot. So then
that gets to a risk reward scenariowhere you're like, are we like finishing
a little bit of his offense becausewe're asking more from him as a point
and tack defender. So I thinkthat's like those considerations you have to take
with fit where it goes a littlebit more beyond just like, oh,
a great shooter playing with Luke upthat sounds fantastic, Like there are a

(21:51):
little bit of other things that gointo it as well too. Yeah,
I think the idea is like howmuch more shooting can you find? And
how much more if you're going togo down that route? How do you
compliment or be able to hide attimes Clay in terms of defensively, because
you might if it's either pj orDerreck Jones Jr. If one of them
is going to take the defensive assignmentprimarily, and how you shake up your

(22:12):
lineup to be able to get thatto fit while still was trying to get
what you can from Clay offensively willbe a tough needle to try and thread
for this team, given you knowwhat they were able to do defensively last
year and how well that they wereable to make their identity on that side
of the floor. But it's interestingthe idea that we're talking about a Klay
Thompson, a contavious callwell Pope andJeremy Grant to a lesser degree, who

(22:33):
you would have to do obviously atrade with with Portland order to make that
happen. But these are now theconversations that the Mavericks have put themselves in
by making a run to the NBAFinals. So, as I said on
a previous episode, get used tothese conversations because the Mavericks have now opened
up that championship window where they're goingto be in play for these kinds of
players. The question will be howcreative and how aggressive will Nico Harrison in

(22:56):
his front office continue to be,which grant we've seen so far they are
willing to be aggressive to be ableto try to make these moves. Maybe
these are other ones, maybe alittle bit less feasible, but at the
same time, with some gymnastics,if you will, could potentially make that
happen. As we get ready toclose today, go ahead, So we'll
see how that goes in terms ofwhat the Mavericks decided to do there as

(23:17):
far as the rest of their uhtheir free agency goes, and what they
decide to do UH and with therest of their trades and what they do
in terms of the rest of themoves going forward. So look, it's
gonna be a fantastic time. It'sgonna be a great time to see Obviously,
Grant is covering the Slovenia national teamas they get ready to have their
friendly on this Friday before they getready for their Olympic qualifying tournament. So

(23:40):
look, we'll see how the restof it goes. Grant, can you
tell the folks where you're at andwhat they can expect from your coverage going
forward for the rest of the timethat you're there. Oh yeah, all
right, Now, Rossio sat beforethe qualifire. This is the first game.
Uh we watch it just gonna beMission Sylmania. And uh, yesterday,

(24:06):
Uh you know, I was outof practice for the first album five
practice that he had with the nationalteam. And uh, you know there's
only one team that's gonna earn Olympicdid in that Gris Moundsires. There's a
couple of really like tough teams intheir lash in their home country. Uh
with Jaisumo, his brother's injured. So the only like I think established NBA

(24:27):
talent is the honest. But uh, as I've learned Locky when people from
here they told me there's some homecoort advantages that you get when you're in
your home country. That is someoneI'm used to the NBA. I'm not
just piliar with like, uh,there are some stories I heard where some
people our teams have had a situationswith the bus on the way or from

(24:51):
the airport onto the hotel and youknow, all the way to the arena,
and it uh makes the players alittle like tired and all that stuff,
and uh they make them wait atthe I am like, oh,
we can't get in right now,We're gonna have to wait a little bit,
so it's a little easier. I'mnot saying accusing anyone of anything,
obviously, but uh, some peoplefeel at times in these games in their

(25:15):
own country, the referees forget howthe whistle works a little bit for their
own country, so we might notsee too much giannis intended gumbo foul trouble.
It's something that I was kind oftold about the SOHO you know,
and another will be an interesting experiencesalso one of the basketball environments. There's

(25:37):
a lot of passion the fan baseand seeing their own country and fantastic,
the honest being, all would befantastic. And uh, you know,
even some of those meats over there, the player it's not black crowd,
so it's gonna be a lot ofpassion. I think it's been a little
while since their basketball team, likemen's basketball is in the Olympics, so

(26:00):
I think there's gonna be a lotof motivations to really get this done.
So to it potentially if they makeyou a both sides superstars with the Olympics
and one of them is defending thehome court uh in their own country.

(26:22):
So I guess you say, likea historical basketball moments for people that really
like love the game and you don'treally see now with a lot of other
teams are pretty loaded. I'm notnaming names like USA or anything, but
usually some teams don't have to worryabout this type of stuff. Sure,
well, that's gonna be awesome tosee your coverage there and looking forward to
watch you bringing that coverage when itcomes to Team Slovena. Of course,

(26:45):
another Mavericks tis Shawn Sweeney, thelead assistant for the Mavericks, is a
part of the Slovenian coaching staff aswell, so it's gonna be fun to
see him and Luca working together forthat team. Grant, thank you so
much for your time, really appreciated. We're gonna let you go so you
can get ready to cover the game. Today, but appreciate you hopping on
with us making this work and lookingforward to u seeing your covers there with

(27:07):
the Slovenia national team. I appreciateyour time. That'll do it for this
episode of Inside the Mask of thanksto Grant Asset joining me with the Slovenia
national team as they get ready fortheir game against Brazil and they continue their
tournament next week as well. Youcan find them on Twitter at Grant Asset.
Make sure you subscribe to his YouTubechannel as well. Has got tremendous
