(00:00):
Like you're planning to spend a bunchof money in the off season and there
would be salary cap constraints anyway,I'm just sure we're going to spend all
the money we have in off season. Well, that gets to the question
that with new ownership, with theAdamson and Dumont families, what's your sense
of their commitment to spending what wouldbe necessary on the player's salary front to
go where the franchise wants to go. Yeah. I don't think money's going
(00:24):
to be an object. I thinkit's doing it the right way. Bringing
in people with good character. Theirmoney is not going to be the limiting
factor they want to win. We'regoing to be smart about it, though,
But I don't expect we're not havingmoney conversations. The Mavericks lose a
fan favorite in Derek Jones Junior, but they acquire Naji Marshall while still remaining
(00:49):
in play for Clay. This isInside the MAVs. Welcome to Inside the

(02:07):
getting me to over six thousand subscriberson Kevin Gray Sports on YouTube. Need
that support for the Dallas Mavericks asthey lose out on Dereck Jones Junior,
but they acquire Naji Marshall formerly ofthe New Orleans Pelicans, as Marshall signs
a three year, twenty seven milliondollar deal on average nine million dollars per
(02:29):
season after the Mavericks had to makea pivots after losing Dereck Jones Junior.
Dereck Jones Junior, who of courselast year shot thirty four percent from the
three point line and had a careeryear for the Dallas Mavericks. He moves
on to the Los Angeles Clippers, signing a fully guaranteed three year, thirty
(02:50):
million dollar deal to go play withJames Harden, not Paul George. That's
because Paul George has signed a fouryear, two hundred two twelve million dollar
deal to go play with Joel andBean and Tyrese Maxi with the Philadelphia seventy
six Ers, So the Sixers gettingtheir man in free agency. After the
Clippers moved on and Paul George decidedthat they were going to part ways.
(03:14):
Now Derrick Jones Junior will go playwith Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, who
signed James Harden did a two year, seventy million dollar deal to remain in
Los Angeles. But for the Mavericks, we started to hear reporting that there
may be some concern about the Mavericks'ability to hang on to Derrick Jones Junior,
because we had learned that Derrick Joneshad switched agents and was going over
(03:38):
to Clutch Sports, and the timeframe at which he would be able to
start to work with his new agent, really cast doubts on the Mavericks' ability
to be able to retain him.So, with the Mavericks feeling like they
were not going to have the necessaryand requisite time to be able to work
with Derrick Jones, they decided toquickly pinch of it and move on to
(04:00):
Naji Marshall, and their inclinations werecorrect. Derrick Jones Junior, not long
after Naji Marshall agreed to his threeyear, twenty seven million dollar deal,
signed that three year, thirty milliondollar deal with the Clippers, and for
the Mavericks, they have lost theirbest point of attack defender when it came
to Derrick Jones Junior. We knowhow much of an effect that he had
(04:23):
on this Mavericks defense, especially oncehe was inserted back into the starting lineup.
Once the Mavericks acquired Daniel Gafford, and you saw the defensive turnaround that
the Mavericks were able to make. They became the best defense literally in the
league during the final twenty games ofthe season that helped create what was a
spectacular run to the NBA Finals. The Mavericks now have to replace that in
(04:46):
terms of their best point of attackdefender. But what they are getting in
terms of Naji Marshall is a guythat's six to seven with a seven foot
one wing span at twenty six yearsof age, coming off of his fourth
season, a former after the twowa player that carved out a really nice
role for himself when he was withthe Pelicans, a guy that can really
defend and put together a career movingforward that allows him to fit into the
(05:13):
timeline that the Mavericks continue to havewith a lot of young guys. When
you look at the roster that theyhave a lot of team friendly contracts with
guys that are very young. We'retalking about in the ages of twenty one
to twenty two to twenty six yearsold. We're talking about a twenty year
old. In terms of Derek Liveof the second you still got a young
jaydon Hardy who his deal is guaranteedgoing into it next season. You're talking
(05:36):
about obviously with Luka Donci. You'retalking obviously with PJ. Washington and Daniel
Gaffer, each of them twenty fiveyears of age. Now you add a
Naji Marshall, who at twenty sixyears of age, continues to fit inside
that timeline and you still are allowedto have now opportunities to pursue Klay Thompson.
But more when it comes to NajiMarshall, a guy, as you
(05:59):
mentioned, twenty six years old, sixty seven with a seven foot wingspan,
of guy that shot forty point sevenpercent on a wide open threes last year,
shot thirty nine point six percent oncatch and shoot threes as well,
and forty two percent in the cornersfrom the three point line, and last
year shooting thirty eight percent from threeon about two and a half three pointers
(06:19):
a game. With the New OrleansPelicans. You saw how he continued to
grow and really provides you some reallygood defense on that side of the floor.
So a young man who's got alot of opportunity to grow with this
team. That fits the identity andthe culture that the Mavericks are looking for
in terms of a young defender thatcan stretch the floor from the three point
(06:41):
line and be able to provide yousome more depth in terms of your perimeter
defense. But the still the lackingof a point of attack defender is still
there for the Mavericks, even withthe acquisition of Naji Marshall, which again
you give Nico Harrison credit for forquickly making the pivot and not waiting until
something happened with Derrick Jones Jr.And decided to be much more proactive to
(07:04):
make the signing. And if you'rea Mavericks fan, you appreciate the fact
that the Mavericks find ways to continueto move on quickly, make decisions quickly
to improve their roster, and forsome based on the acquisition of Naji Marshall,
feeling like they've got an upgrade withDerrick Jones Junior. Because here's the
calculus that you had to make.If you're going to bring back DJJ.
(07:26):
Is he going to have Was hegoing to have another similar career year of
the way that he had this pastyear? Guy coming off a year where
he signed last in free agency lastyear, was on a veteran minimum contract
going into this upcoming year, andhe earned everything that he got. Jason
Kidd continuing to fulfill his promise thatnot only does his teams continue to get
(07:48):
better and his players get better, but also getting them paid. Derrick Jones
Junior now another example of that whenit comes to him now moving on in
free agency, but the Mavericks takingthe calculus that not only were they not
able to potentially retain him, butalso finding a player with upside that was
young, that fit the timeline ofthe Mavericks and Naji Marshall fits that.
(08:13):
And now Derrick Jones Junior moves onto the Clippers to continue his career,
where again he will be paid onaverage ten million dollars a season. So
a good signing for the Mavericks interms of acquiring Naji Marshall as a replacement
that will really be able to fitin nicely with what the Mavericks do.
The Mavericks still with work to dowhen it comes to continuing to improve this
(08:33):
team based on free agency, thefact that they were able to move on
from Tim Hardaway Junior to create thatsixteen point two million dollar trade exception,
which we will get to on theother side of the break, because yes,
with the acquisition of Naji Marshall inreplacing Derrick Jones Junior, he had
already moved on from Tim Hardaway Juniorto acquire Quinton Grimes to be able to
fit in as well as a youngshooter that continues to improve on the defensive
(08:58):
end as well. What does allof this mean for Klay Thompson and the
maverised pursuit of him based on whatthey have available and what we are learning
about, how Klay Thompson is feelingabout what he wants and potentially coming to
Dallas, and how Lebron James andthe Lakers are already making their play to
acquire the Los Angeles native. Moreon that on the other side of the
(09:22):
break, But before we get there, let's hear from today's sponsor of our

with us through our spot and throughtoday's podcast partner in Aura for the Mavericks
they lose out on Dereck Jones Juniorwho was Priority one A and one B
(11:11):
according to Nico Harrison. But atthe same time, the Mavericks making a
nice pivot to moving on from DereckJones Junior to acquire Naji Marshall. But
what does all this mean when itcomes to the pursuit of one Klay Thompson,
who, of course is not goingto be continuing his career with the
Golden State Warriors after playing his firstthirteen seasons with Golden State. Of course,
(11:33):
a four time NBA champion and oneof the most prolific three point shooters
in NBA history, he is beinghotly pursued by, of course, the
Dallas Mavericks. Other teams include theLos Angeles Lakers as well, But for
the Mavericks and Opportunity where they havebeen making a full court press to acquire
(11:54):
Klay Thompson again. But what we'reseeing on Sunday was reporting from individuals like
Mine Poole, for example, whoare as close to the Warriors as you
can get, that the Mavericks wereputting on a heavy pursuit of Klay Thompson
and for others feeling like the Mavericksworthy front runner. Now here's where we
stand when it comes to the KlayThompson pursuit. The Dallas Mavericks, who
(12:16):
I mentioned, open up a sixteenpoint two million dollar trade exception. They
saw the Intels use a lot oftheir mid level exception that they had on
Naji Marshall. The Mavericks had,of course over a twelve million dollar mid
level exception to be able to utilize, especially once they were able to create
the room to move on from TimHardaway Junior. But at the same time,
(12:39):
now a lot of that has beenused on Naji Marshall. They still
have about four million dollars left ofthat that they could potentially use on other
free agents, depending on what's availableafter their pursuits of Klay Thompson is over
with. I want you to takea listen though, to Adrian wols Narowski
of ESPN describing how things have beenplaying since the opening of free agency when
(13:01):
it comes to Clay Thompson, particularlyin the case of one Lebron James,
and what he has already done totry to recruit Clay to the Los Angeles
Lakers at what this means for theMavericks. Take a listen. He his
agent Greg Lawrence Tonight of Wasserman aretalking with a number of teams, including
(13:22):
the Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks. You know they've had conversations tonight. I'm
told Lebron James called Clay Thompson rightwhen free agency opened six pm Eastern,
reached out and talked to Klay Thompson. The expectation that I have right now
is these conversations, this negotiation willgo into tomorrow. There probably will not
(13:43):
be a resolution tonight, but certainlyDallas, the Lakers, the Clippers are
working to be involved in this. Those are the prominent teams for Klay Thompson,
whose career is going to be somewhereother than Golden State once his free
agency periods open. So hopefully lookingfor resolution when it begins on Monday.
(14:03):
And beyond Lebron James calling Klay Thompsonat the very beginning of free agency to
try to recruit the LA native toplay with the Los Angeles Lakers. Reportedly,
Lebron would be willing to take apay cut to acquire a player like
Clay Thompson, who would be tremendousfor the Lakers and for your Dallas Mavericks
with his ability to shoot from thethree point line. But that just gives
(14:26):
you an indication of how much KlayThompson is being pursued and the kind of
respect that he has been looking forthat allegedly he did not get in terms
of the contract negotiations with the LosAngele excuse me with the Golden State Wars
going back to last year and obviouslyhim not returning to the Golden State Wars
(14:46):
going into next year. A playerand Klay Thomps who yes, defensively has
seen some diminishment in him, butat the same time a player that is
still devastatingly good from the three pointline. And there have been a lot
of folks who been jumping in mymensia saying Kevin, I don't necessarily want
a thirty four year old who hassaw his defensive skills start to diminish,
(15:07):
But at the same time, whathe is is a player that would fit
extremely well into this offense for theDallas Mavericks. Lay Thompson last year hit
two hundred and nineteen catch and shootthree pointers that was second in the NBA
according to Second Spectrum, and aplayer that was fourth in the NBA and
three pointers made and shot nearly thirtynine percent from Downtown last year. Klay
(15:31):
Thompson can still play. And Iknow folks will look at the playing game
where he went zero of ten andsay, Kevin, I don't necessarily want
that, but what you will havein terms of your offense being that much
more improved going into next year, where last year you did not have the
kind of three point shooting down thestretch that you needed to to compete,
especially against a team like the BostonCeltics in the NBA Finals. Klay Thompson
(15:54):
would be an upgrade in terms ofyour offense. And you think about Luka
Doncis and Kyrie Irvings ability to penetrateand be able to find a guy like
Klay Thompson even with the movement thathe does. It also his ability to
shoot beyond the three point line, whether it be in the corners, above
the break, wherever it is onthe three point line, Klay Thompson is
(16:14):
extremely proficient at even at this stagein his career. Chris Haynes of the
NBA TV and of course on BleacherReport describing how the Mavericks still are the
front runner at this point even withwhat's happening based on what we know so
far and free agency. Take alisten to Chris Haynes here, they're a
(16:36):
front runner in that race for KlayThompson. If there is a front runner,
I'm going to say it's the DallasMavericks. He is very intrigued by
that situation where he can be aguy that can fit in with what they
do. So for Chris Haynes andthe report, when it comes to the
Dallas Mavericks, yeah, he remainsthe front runner. Move moving forward,
(17:00):
do the Mavericks in terms of pursuingKlay Thompson. And for the Mavericks,
let's look at the scenario that theyhave in terms of what their money situation
looks like from a salary cap standpointright now, a little over one hundred
and seventy three million dollars in termsof projected salary, if they could move
out a salary in the thirteen milliondollar range, and of course in a
sign and trade with Golden State intothe sixteen point one million dollar trade exception
(17:23):
that they have that they got withencourrens of moving on from Tim Hardaway Junior.
So for the Mavericks, if you'relooking at moving on from Josh Green,
who will be making nearly thirteen milliondollars in the first year of his
extension this upcoming season. That's thesalary that you're looking at to potentially move
on to terms of Golden State inorder to acquire Klay Thompson. Which makes
(17:45):
a lot of sense here because ifyou feel like if you move on from
Josh Green, you have your replacementin Quinton Grimes, that's an easy slot
in for Grimes to be able tomove into the Josh Green position, where
Grimes would be continuing to develop asthree point shooter and also as a defender
as well coming off the bench. So if you're looking at an easy way
(18:06):
to kind of slot this in whenit comes to Klay Thompson, that would
be the most natural fit, especiallyif the Golden State Warriors are willing to
take on Josh Green, which ifyou are watching, you have seen that
there are some Warriors fans who wouldn'tmind the idea of Josh Green on this
team. So for the Mavericks, now, how much do they continue to
pursue Klay Thompson. Not only thefact that they've moved on and lost out
(18:29):
on Derrick Jones Junior, but theywere able to pivot and acquire Naji Marshall.
Now Klay Thompson becomes the focal pointfor this team to be able to
continue to improve this offseason. Soif you tell me that a Mavericks offseason
included moving on from Tim Hardaway Juniorand losing out on Derrick Jones Junior,
but you were able to acquire KlayThompson and also Naji Marshall, I would
(18:52):
tell you that it's still a prettygood offseason for this team. I would
still want for the Mavericks to findthemselves a ball handler and a playmaker.
I've seen y'all jump in my mencheswith the idea of maybe bringing back Spencer
Dinwinnie as a guy that can bethat guy off the bench to be able
to have some ball handling and somescoring ability as well. But at the
same time, you are going tostill need some of that if you're the
(19:15):
Mavericks. Even with the improvement onthe offensive end with the acquisition of Klay
Thompson and for Naji Marshall as well, continuing to fit into the timeline nicely
for the Mavericks. But all ofthis being said, the Mavericks I still
think are in a good position evenwith the loss of Derrick Jones Junior,
because again, how much could youbank on the idea that he was going
(19:37):
to have another career year for theMavericks. Yes, he fit in very
well with the culture of the DallasMavericks, became a fan favorite, a
guy that his above the rim abilityto finish really provided a nice element,
especially in transition for the Mavericks tobe able to finish out on the break.
There were a lot of things thatDerrick Jones Junior brought and helping this
defense turn itself around during the secondhalf of the year, and for him,
(20:00):
he now has a chance to continueto go get paid elsewhere. Jason
Kidd, when it comes to eitherJalen Brunson and now the latest example and
Derrick Jones, j you're making goodon his promise that he continues to get
guys paid. But also if you'relooking at this as well, if you're
a free agent looking at the ideaplaying with the Dallas Mavericks, playing with
Luka Doncis and obviously alongside Kyrie Irvingas well, you're going to continue to
(20:25):
improve your career and find yourself makingmoney, whether it be with the Dallas
Mavericks or elsewhere, and the ideaof playing with Luka Doncic is a good
one for you, especially now knowinghow close the Mavericks are to winning a
championship since they made the NBA Finals. If you're Klay Thompson and you're the
position that you are in your careerat thirty four years of age, do
you value winning a championship at thisstage in a place where the Mavericks have
(20:52):
developed the kind of culture and familialatmosphere that has seen your shoemates in terms
of Kyrie irving be able to beable to assimilate nicely into the Mavericks.
Or if your clay is simply aboutgoing home where your father will be able
to call your games on television, you'll be able to play in Los Angeles,
retire as a Los Angeles Laker, being from Los Angeles and playing alongside
(21:15):
Lebron James and Anthony Davis, butnot necessarily being closer to a championship than
what the Mavericks are at this point. Those are the things that Klay Thompson
has to value and think about atthis point. It's going to be a
tough decision for him. Because I'msure the heart strings will be tugged at
pretty well by the Mavericks, excuseme, by the Los Angeles Lakers based
(21:36):
on everything that we just laid out. But if for the Dallas Mavericks,
you make an extremely compelling case foryou to be the team that acquires Klay
Thompson services to be able to playalongside Luca Doncis and Kyrie Irving because of
not only the offensive fits for Clay, but also the fact that at his
stage of his career, if he'slooking to win another championship, the Mavericks
(21:57):
right now present the best opportunity todo that with an ascending superstar in terms
of Luka Doncis, who arguably isthe best player in the world right now,
already, a Kyrie Irving who iscoming off a twenty five and five
year as well with the Mavericks andwas terrific throughout the course of the regular
season. And for young role players, whether it be Derek Lively, the
(22:19):
second Daniel Gaffer, PJ. Washingtonobviously now with Naji Marshall and Quinton Grimes
in the fold as well, ateam that is on the right direction with
really nice contracts and still the abilitywith flexibility to be able to have their
twenty twenty five first round pick theirtwenty thirty one first round pick as well
to still be able to make movesif they were able to do so.
(22:41):
But Klay Thompson, the pursuit ofhim is what is now most important for
the Mavericks to be able to pairalongside with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irvings.
So for me, Clay has gota real decision to make here. But
the Mavericks do have the room andthe creativity and the aggressiveness of this front
office to make it happen. Andthat is one thing I continue to be
(23:03):
impressed with when it comes to NicoHarrison and this Mavericks front office. Their
aggressiveness and their creativity to continue toimprove this roster, and they have earned
the trust of a lot of Mavericksfans and including myself when it comes to
their ability to put a roster togetherand make quick decisions that not only accentuate
the strengths of this Mavericks team, but also ensure that they're pairing players alongside
(23:29):
Luca Donston Kyrie Irving that allowed toget them the most out of this team
and you saw how that was ableto happen with the acquisitions of Daniel Gaffer
and of course PJ. Washington atthe trade deadline, but even before that
in the draft last year when theywere able to draft Derek Lively the second.
But now moving forward, this teamis in a win now window to
try to compete for championships, especiallyover the next couple of years, and
(23:52):
the moves that they are going tomake have to be looking toward that vision
of how much closer can they getto winning a championship within the next two
to three years of specially when youstart thinking about the financial implications of a
super Max contract coming for Luca Dongejust at the end of this upcoming season,
a potential contract extension in terms ofthose discussions. When it comes to
Kyrie Irving, the time is now, John Cena, for the Mavericks to
(24:18):
win a championship ensure that they're capitalizingon this window. And Klay Thompson,
yes, at even thirty four yearsof age, fits into that win now
mentality, even with how you mayfeel about his defense. Yes, it
would have been nice to have KlayThompson and Derrick Jones Junior on this same
team together, but the circumstances dictatedbased off of Derrick Jones Junior changing agencies
(24:42):
and making it more difficult for theMavericks to retain him. Shout out to
Tim Cato for that report that reallycast out on the idea that the Mavericks
were able to retain him that unfortunatelycame to fruition, but the Mavericks finding
a way to be able to keepthemselves in position to acquire a player that
fits exactly what they need to dogoing forward. Now, the pursuit of
(25:03):
Klay Thompson continues, and if theMavericks can land him, this would continue
to be a successful offseason building upwhat they were able to do to get
to the NBA Finals. Again, regardless of how you feel about Klay Thompson
at this point in his career,he would be a significant upgrade with his
ability to shoot and be a veteranleader in presence on this team who has
(25:25):
been there and done that and wonfour NBA Championships to go alongside with Kyrie
Irving, and Irving could be arecruitment tool to be able to help Klay
Thompson understand what the Mavericks have therespect that Clay would have for Jason Kidd
being a former NBA champion and aplayer who's been one of the best point
guards in the history of the NBAand now becoming a successful coach, all
(25:48):
of these things will continue to comeinto play and how the Mavericks pursue Klay
Thompson, but they have the absoluteability to do so going forward. It
would be interesting to see how theMavericks continue to put themselves in position to
be able to do that when itcomes to Klay Thompson. But if Clay
is looking for a chance to wina championship while not only sticking it to
his former team in the Golden StateWars, he can do that much better
(26:12):
with the Dallas Mavericks, even withthe idea of going home to Los Angeles,
because Clay will also have to winthe idea. Does he want to
go play for a first time headcoach, even with playing with Lebron James
and Anthony Davis and what does thatmean in terms of the circus of LA
with Lebron James now his son Bronnibeing there as well, Or do you
(26:33):
want to go to a much moreestablished group with a arguably the best player
in the world at Kyrie Irving,as I mentioned a little bit earlier twenty
five to five and five season atthe age of thirty two, and a
team that's clearly on the ascent whenit comes to their abilities to compete for
championships if Clay is looking for thatand a quote unquote fresh start, which
(26:55):
we reportedly heard that he wants.Dallas is the place for Clay, not
necessarily Los Angeles, even with allthe things from a familial standpoint that he
would have in Los Angeles. Butthat is Clay's decision to make in his
alone. We will see how theMavericks continue to handle their free agency and
what that means for them going forwardfor the rest of this offseason now that
(27:17):
we are officially into the month ofJuly, when it comes to NBA free
agency, and how the Mavericks lookto get better as a team coming off
their NBA Finals run. So muchmore here on inside the Mask that will
keep you abreast on when it comesto this team, any news breaking news
that it comes to this Maverick team. We will be all over it when
it comes to the Mavericks right hereon inside the Maps That'll do it for
