Planning to spend a bunch of moneyin the off season, and there would
be salary cap constraints anyway. I'mjust sure we're going to spend all the
money we have in off season. That gets to the question that with new
ownership with the Addamson and Dumont families, what's your sense of their commitment to
spending what would be necessary on theplayer's salary front to go where the franchise
(00:20):
wants to go. Yeah, Idon't think money is going to be an
object. I think it's doing itthe right way. Bringing in people with
good character. Their money is notgoing to be the limiting factor they want
to win. We're going to besmart about it though, But I don't
expect we're not having money conversations. What do the Mavericks need to round out
(00:44):
the rest of their roster? Andcould a reunion be in order for one
of these two former Dallas Mavericks. This is Inside the MAVs. Welcome to

League while also trying to figure outhow they round out the rest of their
roster. The Mavericks beginning their SummerLeague preparations with practice o Max Prosper going
to be the featured player for theDallas Mavericks. Yes, they also have
(02:07):
their second round draft pick in MelvinAgensa as well, who will be participating
in Summer League this year as wellin Las Vegas. As of course,
the backdrop will be Team USA asthey get ready for the Olympics here in
a few weeks. But at thesame time for the Mavericks, they still
have work to do as we getready to hear from Klay Thompson this week
(02:27):
as well as he Naji Marshall andQuinton Grimes will be officially introduced as Dallas
Mavericks. Quenton Grimes already in thebuilding for the Mavericks as he gets ready
for his first season with Dallas aftercoming over in the Detroit Pistons trade that
sent Tim Hardaway Junior to Detroit andbrought Clinton Grimes to Dallas for the Mavericks,
(02:49):
they will continue to build with thisroster going forward, and we've heard
reporting on what they could continue todo to fill out the rest of this
team. Michael Scotto of Hoops Typefor a Year USA today discussing the idea
that the Mavericks could be interested inbringing back either Spencer Dinwiddie or Dennis Smith
Junior. Of course, Spencer Dinwiddie, a part of the team that made
(03:12):
the Western Conference Finals in twenty twentytwo, could provide some more scoring off
the bench, but at the sametime, a guy in Dennis Smith Junior,
who Mavericks fans know very well, originally drafted by the Mavericks, still
close with Luka. Doncic provides youa really good on ball defender that can
guard ones and twos and has becomea real dog on the defensive end as
(03:32):
he's continued to remake himself in theleague. While yes, not a great
three point shooter Dennis Smith Junior attwenty nine percent last year, he would
provide a measure of defense off thebench that the Mavericks would need to have,
especially at the point of attack.Spencer Dinwiddie, who had a chance
to join the Dallas Mavericks this passseason after he was bought out during the
(03:53):
trade deadline, decided to go jointhe Los Angeles Lakers and things didn't necessarily
work out from him him there,so could a reunion be in order for
one of those two players coming backto Dallas, depending on the need and
the flavor that you're looking for.A team that still may bring back Mark
Keith Morris as well, who wasa veteran leader and a real voice in
(04:14):
presence in the locker room for theDallas Mavericks as they made their run to
the NBA Finals. We've also heardthe names like a Malachi Flynn, who
had the most random fifty point gamethat you'll ever see in the NBA.
But regardless of what the Mavericks decideto do, they have flexibility with their
options, and yes, they've gota deepening rotation coming off the bench.
(04:35):
When you look at how Jaydon Hardywill continue to look to step up on
both the offensive and more so onthe defensive end. You saw him improve
as the season went on, bemuch better in terms of his reads and
his passes to be a much moreeffective member, especially in the postseason.
Dante exem who's coming back this upcomingseason a little over three million dollars that
(04:56):
he will be paying this upcoming yearfor the Mavericks, a ball handler off
the bench that can knock down shotsfrom the three point line, will be
again another valued member of this rotation. But when you look at the Mavericks
from the standpoint of what they've beenable to do this offseason, you really
like what they've done to put togetherthe roster around the current superstars that they
have and Luka Dodgson, Kyrie Irving. We've talked extensively about what the Mavericks
(05:20):
were able to do in Annie KlayThompson and what he will provide not only
in terms of his leadership, hisveteran presence, but his ability to knock
down shots from the outside and willfind a volume of opportunities from Luca Donson
and Kyrie Irving to be that threatfrom the three point line that the Mavericks
so desperately needed as we got deeperinto the playoffs and especially in the NBA
(05:43):
Finals. But for them, thiswill be about the continued improvement of the
roster that they have with young guyslike Derek Lively the second who was sensational
during his rookie year and a guyin Omax prosper who we heard from this
week start to be able to developas well. He's going to have plenty
of opportunities this summer and summerly toguard the best offensive player for opposing teams.
(06:06):
The Summer League head coach Jared Dudleytalking about that this week, saying
that Oldmox is going to have hisopportunities to be out on the perimeter defending
the offensive teams best offensive player duringthese Summer League games. And on the
offensive end, not only will hehave plenty of opportunities to get catch and
shoot opportunities from the three point line, but also learning as he redrives when
(06:30):
he gets closed out on to beable to make the right reads and correct
passes to be able to run theoffense effectively. Knowing how much he's going
to be featured in Summer League offensivelyfor the Mavericks. So those are the
two things for O Max that he'sgoing to have to develop. Continuing to
be the best perimeter defender that hecan with the opportunities that it's going to
get provided during summerly, but alsooffensively knocking down shots from the outside to
(06:54):
be a potential three and D typeof player that the Mavericks will need to
be a part of the rotation.Jared Dudley also saying that he wants O
Max to be able to get toa point where you can see him competing
for rotational minutes going into this upcomingseason and for a Mavericks scene that's going
to need all the help that theycan get from their young players, and
O Max is going to be apart of that as you look at what
(07:16):
he needs to develop continuing for therest of this summer. More on what
the Mavericks could potentially add when wetalk about the guys like Spencer, Dinwiddie,
Dennis Smith Jr. And others, and most importantly what that means for
their development going into next season andhow this roster can continue to get filled
out. But before we get there, let's hear from today's sponsor of our

(09:09):
Back here on Inside the MAVs,thank you for hanging out with us
through our spot, and thank youto today's sponsor of our video and our
podcast in Aura. The Mavericks continuingto get ready for their summer league preparations
as they continue to build this rosterout going forward for the rest of the
summer. A team that of coursemade the NBA Finals for the first time
(09:31):
since twenty eleven, sees the additionsof Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall and Quinton
Grimes as well. Again you willhear from them later on this week,
But for the Mavericks, this isa team and a rotation now that when
you start looking at the improvement andthe timeline of this team and the young
players that are on there, youfeel like this championship window is open for
(09:52):
years to come, given what theyhave in terms of twenty five year olds
in Luka Doncic obviously, with PJ. Washington, Daniel Gafford, as well
Kyrie Irving yes in his early thirtiesKlay Thompson at the age of thirty four.
They are looking to maximize the opportunitiesto be able to compete at the
top of the Western Conference for atleast the next couple of years. And
(10:13):
yes, folks will malign the ideathat Maxi Kleber remains on this roster,
but it doesn't appear that he's goinganywhere anytime soon, which means he will
have a chance to continue to hopefullyremain healthy going in the next year.
And we know how much the Maverickslove his defensive flexibility, with his ability
to guard fours and fives and bea versatile defender on that side of the
(10:33):
floor and still have the capability attimes to knock down open three pointers when
he has the confidence to do so. That will be huge for the Mavericks
this upcoming season, but this continuesto be about the development of the young
players on this team. We talkeda little bit about o Max Prospering what
he's going to have to show inSummer League this year to show continue progression
(10:54):
and development on both ends of thefloor, to give the Mavericks organization confidence
that he can be a legitimate partof this rotation, because that is one
of the expectations going into this upcomingseason for the Mavericks. Who he can
learn from is a guy in NajiMarshall, who had twenty six years of
age coming over from the New OrleansPelicans, has carved out a nice role
(11:16):
for himself in this league as adog on the defensive end. Tough as
nails, is going to bring energyon the defensive end of the floor and
knock down shots from the outside fromthe three point line. You love the
way that the Mavericks have built thisteam around their two superstars, but also
the toughness and the ability to beable to have shooters in this lineup,
(11:37):
regardless if they're in the starting lineup, but also coming off the bench as
well. One of the things thatwe will monitor throughout the course of the
summer as well is the development ofPJ Washington, especially from the three point
line. We've heard reporting that heis having his three point shot retool and
remade, and hopefully that will bemuch more consistency from him this upcoming season.
(11:58):
Another player with a chance, witha full summer with this team to
be able to show the growth anddevelopment needed to be a part of this
team, especially knocking down shots fromthe outside and doing so at a much
more consistent rate. But for thisteam overall, you like what they've built,
you like what they put together, and if the additions of a spencer
(12:20):
Dinwiddie, regardless of how you mayfeel about him, even with his decision
to go to the Los Angeles Lakerswhen they had a chance to come back
to Dallas, or in my mind, a guy like Dennis Smith Junior,
who I think would relish the ideaof coming back to Dallas. We have
seen reporting from MAS Sports Illustrated thathe is interested mutually in coming back to
(12:41):
the Dallas Mavericks and what that wouldmean for his career. Being able to
assimilate right back into this locker roomwith Luca doncis where I don't think Dennis
Smith would be a problem with theMavericks, especially with the culture and the
infrastructure that they've built. I seehim seamlessly fitting in to what the VERUSA
wanted to build, and that isa team that's built on toughness, their
(13:03):
ability to defend, but also buildinga locker room and a culture that will
allow each of them to accentuate theirstrengths, but also be able to be
a part of a team that cangrow together for years to come and be
on that timeline that we've discussed thatwill see this team in the future continue
to build towards championship success, ledby of course Luka Doncis. I think
(13:26):
Denni Smith Junor would be a perfectfit at this stage in his career,
having gone through the trials and tribulationsof learning how to remake himself in this
league. Yes, he still hasthe athleticism, he would have to be
a much better shooter from the threepoint line to find himself consistently being able
to part of the rotational miss Butone thing that you will not have to
question with DSJ is the effort onthe defensive end, which is what the
(13:48):
Matveris built their championship run success onwhich is on the defensive end of the
floor. Questions on whether or notSpencer Dinwiddie, who number one, would
want to be here first, butalso what that would mean for him in
terms of a lessened role in termsof the rotation if he were to come
here, given what the Mavericks areexpecting from guys like Jayden Hardy, like
(14:11):
from Dante exhim as well, QuintonGrimes being part of that rotation after the
Mavericks moved off of Josh Green andsent him to Charlotte as a part of
that historic six team NBA trade, that of course Landy Klay Thompson with the
Dallas Mavericks. All of these questionswill continue to be answered as this summer
goes on. But if you're aMavericks fan, you have confidence in what
(14:33):
Nico Harrison has built with this team, the vision that he has set forward
for the Dallas Mavericks, and theirability to execute on him. Because all
of this for the Mavericks and whatthey are trying to build with their foundation
moving towards championship success year after yearand consistently remaining in that top four conversation
is what you have seen the Mavericksbe able to put forward throughout the course
(14:56):
of this offseason, laying that foundationthat can be sturdy and built upon with
your two superstars, but also young, controllable contracts that allows you to have
flexibility moving forward with the assets thatyou have, your twenty twenty five first
round pick, your twenty thirty onefirst round pick as well, and while
yes, the twenty twenty five NBAdraft class is expected to be loaded,
(15:18):
you still have a valuable asset thereto potentially use in a trade along with
that twenty thirty one first round pickas well. But the young guys that
they have and what they're able toutilize for them going forward, along with
the veteran presence that they now havein terms of Klay Thompson coming to this
team if they decide to bring backMark Keith Morris as well, They've got
(15:39):
a perfect blend and mix of youngand veteran guys who have been there in
terms of their championships experience. I'mtalking about a guy like Klay Thompson now
marrying that with young players who havenow experienced what it's like to go through
an NBA Finals run and the riggersand the what difficult road it can be
(16:00):
navigate in the NBA playoffs, andthat experience being able to help them going
into next season. So you shouldbe really excited about this team, the
core that they've developed, the youngplayers that are surrounding that core, and
the experience now that they gain havingmade an NBA finals run, and what
that means for their ability to managethemselves throughout the course of this offseason going
(16:22):
into next year, geling together duringtraining camp which we will see later on
this year, getting ready for theseason, but most importantly for their superstar
on Luka Doncics, finally being ableto get some rest after course he and
his Slovenian national team lost in thesemi finals de Grease as they were trying
to qualify for the Olympics. Thissets up to be one of the most
important summers for this franchise, givenwhat they have now decided to move forward
(16:47):
with in the acquisitions of Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall and Quinton Grimes, the
health and recovery of Luka Doncich,Kyrie Irving continuing to play at an extremely
high level where this past season averagetwenty five to five and five Luka donc
is coming off one of the mosthistoric offensive seasons that we've seen in NBA
history. How he will be anNBA MVP candidate going into this upcoming season
(17:11):
as well and should be the oddson favorite to win it. The expectations
for this team have skyrocketed given therun that they've made. And yes,
I know how much the West hasimproved with what you see, especially with
Oklahoma City with the acquisitions of AliceCaruso and Isaiah Hartenstein. But at the
same time, the Mavericks have doneexactly what they need to do to build
(17:33):
their team based off of what theirroster presents to them and filling in the
gaps to be able to make thekind of run that will allow them to
get over the championship hump the waythat they weren't able to do and taking
out the Boston selves because but againthe experience of having gone through that will
make this team much better. Buthow they finish out this roster with the
(17:53):
veterans that they could potentially add tothis team, making sure that whoever they
bring to this roster will fit intothis team from a cultural and a locker
room standpoint, on and off thefloor, because no matter how much execution
that you have on the floor,in terms of trying them with a championship,
it's about being able to have thatkind of chemistry off the floor as
(18:14):
well to be able to forge towarda common goal in winning a championship.
And the Mavericks will need all handson deck to be able to do so,
but they will look to do thatas they finish out building out what
is right now a really good rosterthat has a young, good core of
players, but also a veteran mixof players as well to be able to
add to that experience based on whatthey have. So I have love what
(18:37):
the Mavericks have done throughout the courseof this offseason. Again when we watch
Summer League, when it comes toJared Dudley, who reportedly has had interest
from the Cleveland Cavaliers to potentially joinKenny Atkinson and his staff in Cleveland.
We heard reporting from that from MichaelScotto as well. Jared Dudley was a
former player of course under Kenny Atkinsonwhen he was with the Nets. There
(19:00):
could be some interest there. ButSean Sweeney officially coming back to this team
as well as the lead assistant anddefensive coordinator for the Dallas Mavericks, Jared
Dudley expected to stay when it comesto the Dallas Mavericks as well, So
the foundation of this coaching staff, these players, and his front office now
all in place in Nico Harrison talkingabout how he wants this organization to come
(19:22):
back ten to fifteen percent better. That all starts at the top with him,
but also his players as well, and hopefully for Luka Doncic, the
rest that he will now get forhimself from the rest of the summer,
and what that means for his abilityto be able to lead this team improving
on the defensive end, where weknow he's capable of doing it when he
decides to do so, but moreso how that permeates throughout the rest of
(19:45):
the team, and even with theaddition of Klay Thompson, how much more
motivated he's going to be to beable to be a part of this team.
You saw it on his Instagram postover the weekend. Klay Thompson is
ready to have some fun in Dallas, and he's based off of how exciting
this team is, the young playersthat they have, the veteran group that
(20:06):
they have as well, marrying allof this together and how it comes together
for the Mavericks throughout the course ofthe rest of this offseason and going into
training camp and into the regular seasonas well. We've gone through a lot
of numbers when it comes to whatNaji Marshall with Quinton Grimes, with Klay
Thompson are all able to do andthe skill sets that they bring to this
team. Now it's about being ableto execute it on the floor and the
(20:27):
development of everyone else, whether itbe PG Washington, Daniel Gafford, Derek
Live of the second whomever you wantto name as part of these guys that
have to continue to get better throughoutthe rest of this offseason and into next
year. You are expected to seethat growth this summer and going into training
camp next year, which should allgive us a really good feeling about what
(20:49):
this team can be in the WesternConference this upcoming season. But the Mavericks
still have some work to do tobe able to fill out the rest of
this roster. But they've got guysthat are in there that are not only
working hard now but also have achance to continue to have opportunity to develop.
And we will see what happens inthe rest of the free agency.
You might want to hang tight becauseit may be a little while. We
(21:11):
saw last year, of course, the Mavericks didn't sign Dereck Jones Junior until
the middle of August, and yousaw what kind of effect that he had.
You may see something similar for theMavericks as they patiently await to fill
out the rest of this roster withtheir final roster spot that they have left.
But it should continue to be someexciting news when it comes to the
Mavericks. You'll hear from Lay Thompson, Naji Marshall, Quinton Grimes this week.
(21:33):
I'll be all over it, ofcourse from Inside the Mass right here
