Episode 23: The Gilgo Beach Murders - Rex Heuermann

On this episode, we talk about the Gilgo Beach Murders, also known as the Long Island Serial Killer case. The Gilgo Beach Murders were a series of unsolved homicides that occurred in the area of Gilgo Beach and neighboring communities in Long Island, New York, United States. The case came to light in 2010 when the remains of several individuals were discovered in the area.

The first set of remains were found in December 2010 by a police officer who was searching for a missing woman, Shannan Gilbert. As authorities continued their search for Gilbert, they discovered more remains in the same vicinity. Over the next few months, additional bodies were found, and the total number of victims found in the area eventually reached at least ten.

The victims were primarily young women, many of whom were associated with sex work. Due to the pattern and circumstances surrounding the deaths, authorities suspected the work of a serial killer.

In July 2023, Rex Heuermann, a resident of Massapequa Park in Long Island, was arrested in Midtown Manhattan and charged in the murders of three of "the Gilgo Four" victims: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello. The case is still ongoing.
