(00:00):
It's Mike Jones iHeartRadio. We areout at Pier six Pavilion in Baltimore with

(00:04):
mister Derrek Whibley of Some forty one. Derek. Good to see again,
Buddy, good to see you. We've we've talked a lot the last couple
of months. Yeah, we're gettingcloser to the end of things with Some
forty one. Has it? Imean every time that I say it on
the air, when we played landMines or you know, into Deep or
Fat Lip or anything, it makesme sad, but not in a bad
way of Like, man, oneof my favorite fants is going away.

(00:25):
Has it set in for you guysyet or is it still just we got
business to take care of Let's getto it first. Yeah, it doesn't
really feel like it's the end yet. There's so much touring to do.
The record just came out, Haven'tand I all just came out, what
four weeks ago, so just acouple of weeks. Everything feels really new
still. You know, land Minesis still getting played a lot, which
thank you, by the way, absolutely man, we number one, So

(00:46):
I no, dude, that's oneof your biggest songs ever. For you
guys, it is it is,so you know, everything feels really good
and it's just like kind of movingalong. It doesn't feel like it's over
yet. Yeah, but it willbe soon. It will be, you
know. It don't hit me bye. Yeah. Yeah, it's gonna go
by quick. It'll hit me whenI wake up and go, wow,
what do I do now? Yeah? Well, the other thing is that
the fact is you guys get toend on your terms. And that's cool

(01:06):
because how many bands have we seenbecause of this or that or everything else?
We're done and that last show justhappens out of nowhere total. But
at least you guys, you guysget to plan everything and say this is
how we want the end for someforty one to be. I think of
Ram too. You know, theygot to do it on their terms,
and that's great for you guys todo it that way. Yeah. Yeah,

(01:26):
I mean we in the early days, we always said we would write
our own ending. When people wouldwrite us off and say, you know,
flash in the Pan or Flavor ofthe week or they'll be gone next
year, blah blah blah, we'dalways say, no, no, no,
well we'll write our own ending. How many how many hits did you
guys need to have to prove topeople we're not a flash in the pan.
Guys. We got some pretty bigsongs there. I think you're always
something right. You're either the flashin the pan, or you're over the

(01:48):
hill, or you're irrelevant, oryou know, or you're just like then
you become legends. You know.Well, you've said that the focus it's
still going to be one hundred someforty one until that final show, and
that's gonna be not until next yearin Toronto. You've got a whole lot
of shows to do after that.We were just talking about how many,
Like, there's really no break betweennow and then. Have you planned for

(02:09):
a big vacation once it is donethough? I think, well, it'll
be my tenth wedding anniversary when we'redone, and we've never done honeymoon,
so I think I have to dothat. Okay, what are you a
beach guy, Derk Whibley, No, not at all. I didn't think
so. I think of you moreas a city exploring kind of guy.
Yeah, but there's not gonna beyou putting your toes in the sand anywhere.
I don't think so. I can'tnot really. It's like I would

(02:30):
wear the same, you know, black jeans, and who's the shadow in
the lounge chair over there? What'sgoing on? All right? Let me
ask you this then, because youknow you said you're not thinking about any
other projects past the end. Ifit wasn't music, if Derek Whibley could
do something else, what would itbe like? Like, is there a
store you would open? Is theresome hobby that you'd like to do that

(02:53):
you could get into? Probably?I don't know. I've always liked architecture,
you know. I think the onlything I can think back to what
I remember wanting to do before Iever discovered music was be an architect.
Interesting, but that was when Iwas like five or six years old,
and then from then on seven, you know, I was into music.

(03:14):
What about I mean, you've traveledthe world a billion times. What about
going in a book of some ofyour favorite venues and showing the architecture of
those. Maybe that could be somethingthat's literally the first time I'm thinking about
this idea right now. It couldbe cool. I mean, you still
got months, though, you stillgot months and months to do that.
I saw the story you just postedup a couple of days ago. Ten
years congratulations through ten years Sobriety andman, I remember ten years ago when

(03:40):
that story came out, was like, oh crap, what's going on with
Derek? And you know the factis you said it yourself. We have
all these opportunities, don't waste them, and you guys were a rock bottom
at that point and you said,I'm coming back stronger than ever. Kudos
to you, my man for doingthat. Cool. Thank you. Yeah,
that's how did you feel writing thatpart? Dere like just putting that

(04:00):
out there and expressing those feelings often years The other day, I feel
like being open and honest about mylife and who I am is kind of
what I always do in music. So it doesn't feel that strange to open
up and be vulnerable writing something likethat. You know, I just wrote
a book. It's not out yet, but I just finished writing a book
and it will be out in October. So a lot of there's a lot

(04:23):
of stuff in that book that Isit back when I was reading it,
thinking, I can't believe I'm goingto say this about myself and be this
open. But so I'm kind ofused to doing that kind of thing at
this point. Yeah, I wasgonna mention walking disaster. That was my
next question coming out October eighth. Was there anything that you were hesitant about
putting in that book? Because Imean, pretty much your life has been

(04:44):
open since day one. I meanthere's always stuff though that people don't know
about, right, There's a lotof personal feelings and situations that don't get
talked about. I didn't feel weirdwhen I was writing it because I just
started writing and I just wrote thestory not thinking about anything. I was
just, you know, my brainwent into writer mode. And then when
I went back to reader, youknow, when I was just the audience

(05:05):
reading this book, I thought,wow, I can't believe I'm going to
say some of this stuff. ButI didn't edit myself. I was just
like, you know what I mean. Obviously I wrote it for a reason,
so it is what it is.And you did all the writing on
it too, it did Yeah, yeah, that's because I know a lot
of people get like help with that, but it's all I started out with
help. I thought that I neededsomebody to help me co write the thing,

(05:25):
and it just didn't work out verywell and I ended up just doing
it all my own. It's likeI want my story, my way and
my words in my English, myDerek way of speaking. It wasn't sounding
like me when I had somebody else. So we just parted ways and I
started from the beginning. It justwrote the whole thing myself. Yeah,
that's well. Who was the firstperson that read the book. Nobody's read

(05:46):
the full book other than the publishersright now. So no family, No,
nobody's no one. Oh this isa big surprise for everyone. Not
even my wife's read anything. Yeah, just myself. No, no,
no, okay, No, nobody'sbeen asking, which has been good.
Well, I'm asking if you wantto give me a copy, Derek,
I'd love to. And when thebook comes out, can we talk again
because I have to talk again.Yeah, one last show for you guys

(06:09):
here in Baltimore at Pier six tonight. This is it. Do you have
any memories for DC for Baltimore, any any shows, because we've seen you
at so many things with DC oneon one and iHeartRadio and even before that,
I'll say the word HF Festival.I loved you guys over at those.
Yeah, I mean, do youhave any memories of all that stuff?
Well? I do, I meanI have lots of memories of playing
you know, the nine thirty Cluband stuff like that, all those festivals,

(06:32):
all the years. I do rememberearly eerly On and DC one on
one came to us and it waswhen this is probably on the first record,
and there was just talk. Itnever turned to anything, but I
remember being really excited about this opportunityor this idea of us maybe co hosting
a morning show with DC one onone. At one point there was talk
about this happening, do a wholeday with DC one on one. It

(06:55):
was like to be an ongoing thing, to be like either like guest hosts
or something like once a week orsomething like that. And there was these
talks going on and we were reallyexcited about it. It never turned into
anything. But this got brought upand we got pitched this idea and we're
like, we'd love to do that, and it just never went anywhere.
I don't know where it came from, if it came from like our record
company to you guys, or ifyou guys to a record All I know

(07:15):
is we got talked, we gotasked about this idea, and we loved
the idea, but it never happened. That's the first I've ever heard.
Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna goback because I wasn't there yet at the
radio station, but we Elliott wasthere and I'll talk to him about that
and see if he remembers. Well, I'll throw this at you. You're
gonna have a lot of free timecome to the end of the so if
you want to come back and comeon the air with me, Derek,
I'd love to have you anytime.I'm not sure if you guys have thought

(07:40):
about it yet. This is thelast thing, the final show in Toronto.
You know, I'm sure it's gonnabe emotional, and you got all
of your friends coming out, inyour family and everything. Are you gonna
live stream that? So all thesome forty one fans, can we all
be a part of it with you? You're coming up with all these great
ideas on the spot, all thethings you never haven't thought of that Okay,
but that's something to think about here. Please let's get that live stream.

(08:01):
Yes, yeah, there's a coupleof shows in Toronto, yeah,
that we're doing, so I figuredthe last one. Yeah, you know
that's me. The world should bea part of that with you. Yeah,
yeah, that's not a bad idea. I mean, we've talked about
maybe recording it, maybe you know, filming it live album, something possibly,
you know, all right, whoknows, it might be something there.
Okay, all right, we gotplans. You can't say anything yet,

(08:22):
that's fine, Derek. I can'twait to see this last show here
in Baltimore tonight at Pier six,And the book's coming out in October,
and we're gonna talk one more orderthough, you can pre order at some
forty one dot com. Get thatfor sure. Derek's family hasn't ready yet,
so we'll be the first with themto see it. Dude, thank

(08:43):
