Canada’s Got Talent (CGT) is back for a new season! Country music legend Shania Twain and comedian Katherine Ryan join series veteran judges Howie Mandel, Kardinal Offishall, and host Lindsay Ell to find Canada’s next superstar!

Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar thanks our friends at Citytv for bringing some of my favorite acts to the platform for the fourth year in a row!

The CGT finale is tonight and I am thrilled that Darren Leo took time out of his preparation to speak with me.  The digital marketer by day and comedian by night earned Katherine Ryan’s Golden Buzzer and $25,000 from CIBC, after his fiery routine that featured jokes that made the audience laugh.  He survived the show’s elimination round and now faces Canada’s votes.

On this third special CGT episode of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Darren Leo shared his audition story, revisited receiving Katherine Ryan’s Golden Buzzer, and previewed his finale night performance.

Canada's Got Talent airs Tuesdays on Citytv.

(00:24):
very excited to talk to won the finals competing for
the one million dollar prize. He's a comedian from Toronto
and he received kat Farine Ryan's Golden buzzer and his audition.
As of this recording has received over two hundred and
twenty one thousand views on YouTube. So please help me
welcome Darren Leah to the pocast.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
What an intro, Jacob, Oh my god, how many times
did you practice that? That was so fast, so smooth
You almost ran out of breath, but you pulled it through.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
I do this all the time. I've been doing this
since twenty nineteen dere and so it's a privilege to
have you here.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Thank you so much, man, this is so much fun.
Thanks for having me You're so welcome.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
I'm so delighted that you made it through all the
way to finale. You are amazing. So before we get
pretty the finale, I want to learn about your origin story.
So when you get interested in performing, and how did
that passion involve in the desire to pursue your career
in the entertainment industry.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, so here's the thing I live. I work in
a corporate world, and I've always been really keen on
presentations public speaking. But a little thing happened, I don't
know if you heard of this, with the pandemic happened
and then so everything became online, and I was freaking
out a little bit because I kind of lost my
stage and that always set me apart from other sellers.

(01:41):
So I kind of went on a rabbit hole that
how do I improve myself as a speaker without live audience,
And in that process, I kind of just refined myself
into a much more efficient speaker and writer, unbeknownst to myself.
And then after that there's a very pivotal turning point

(02:02):
for me. It was actually after the pandemic when we
were all hearded back into the office, the company noticed
that I had become an even better public speaker, and
I was doing a lot of great content. They invited
me to be almost like a motive motivational speaker. I
had a company wide offside, so three hundred people attended
and it was a fifteen minute speech, and I turned

(02:23):
it into almost like a personal show, and I got
two standing ovations, so people stood up before I was
able to finish. I did tell everyone to sit back down,
let me finish. And when I got out the stage,
I realized, Well, first of all, I realized, I think
I can do this. I think I'm pretty good at this.
But second of all, I think I want to touch people,
more people's lives than just the three hundred people in

(02:44):
the audience. So I started going out writing jokes, going
to open mics because I realized comedy might be the
closest outlet that I can get to that And that's
sort of how it all went down for me. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Absolutely, So now we are here to the present day.
So why does that that twenty twenty five was the
year that you had auditioned in the first EGT.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah. So at the end of twenty twenty three, my
partner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she's fine now. So
I'm very happy over very healthy for yeah, thank you.
But during that process, this when I realized how much
it's not talked about, like how much Canadian lives are
being affected by cancer, how under research some types of

(03:26):
cancers are. And I realized, you know what, what's a
better place to talk about this than the biggest stage
in Canada. And also what's a better way to address
such a heavy topic than with some humor and levity?
And I feel like I was ready for the big stage,
but it's not how much time I was investing in
myself going to clubs, and also how much I really

(03:48):
care about this topic. And I want to be able
to tell this at some point. So I put my
hand up and I couldn't believe, you know, the addition
wins so well, and I made it through and here
we are, and here I am talking to you, Jacob.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
I'm so excited. I got assum went well, and I
wanted quickly to go back to and talk about the
moment that changed your life. It was Katherine Ryan pressed
that golden buzzer. In addition to that, you advanced into
the next round, and also twenty five thousand dollars from
c ib C. So what did that, what did those
what did that moment mean to you? When she pressed
that golden buzzer?

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Okay, this is this is a lot. I didn't tell
you a lot of this is just how much time
to you have? But Jurie, during audition day, another act
had already gotten a golden buzzer. It was Nicolina. It's
this is I'm not there's no spoil alert. There is too.
A few episodes ago she had I saw her gotten
golden buzzer, and then the crew was cleaning up, and

(04:41):
I'm like, there's no way there's gonna be another golden
buzzer if I want to clean up, I don't even
know if they have confetti ready to go in the ceiling.
So the part of me was really like, you know what,
I kind of gave up. I didn't give up on
my performance, but I gave up on the expectation that
that could be me. Well, I'm like, I'm still gonna
go out. I'm still gonna have a good time. And
I went out and I had to really had a

(05:01):
really really good time. And what is really crazy and
reminiscent of what happened to me when I was giving
the company speech. Is that I also got two standing
ovations at the Golden Buzser episode. You weren't able to
see it at the TV show episode because I guess
the timing. But before I finished my Joe, the audience
actually stood up and started clapping. I had to tell
everyone to sit back down so I can finish it,

(05:22):
and the second butter Golden Buzzer came up. Now at
that point, I saw Katherine, Ryan and Howie talking to
each other, very uncharacteristic behavior if you're on a TV
show because you're on a camera. And at that moment, Jacob,
I've never told anyone this before, and this sounds super conceited,
but what was going through my head is that I
had got to have golden Buzzer. I just got two

(05:44):
standing ovations. The judges are whispering to each other, They're
talking about something that is not usual. So in my mind,
I'm like, I have Hey, the PST analogy is this.
Obviously I was very happy to get it. But the
best analogy is this, Like I'm not sure if you're
married or being a relationship, but I see like couples.
I'm not marry myself, but I see the couples get married, right,

(06:05):
and you're very excited to get married, and you know
the person that you're gonna be married to is gonna
be at the end of the aisle, and then put
on a ring. You were so excited, you're anticipating it,
but when you put the ring out, it's still equally excited,
even though you knew what was going to happen. I
kind of lived through that moment for like three seconds
when I saw the judges are talking to each other
and I kind of feel like, oh, I think I

(06:25):
got this in the bag. And then when they press it,
I was still equally excited. But all that shit, with
all that stuff, what's going on in like three seconds
in my mind, and I got it And I couldn't
believe it because before the show, I told my partner,
there's one judge I care about the most is Katherine
Ryan because I love her comedy. She has a similar
style where she always has a message in her comedy

(06:48):
and that's what I try to do in my comedy.
So I really respect her. So coming from her, you
mention so so so.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Much that meant a lot. And then also you went
from that round to eliminate to the elimination rounds, and
what went through your mind after that performance that you said, well,
we'll see you at the finale.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Okay. I don't know how many people are listening have
seen the actual episode till the end, but I was
told that I was not moving on. First, well I
was misled. I wasn't told I was moving up. So
here's for the audience listening if you haven't seen the episode,
here's a backstory is I had. I did my set.
It went incredibly well. Karen no official even when as

(07:29):
far as saying that I think you're going to be
very hard to beat in the finals, not in the eliminations.
He was like, you're so good, and obviously Katherine Ryan's like,
I support you all the way. How you said a
lot of great things. I came off very high energy
off my set and I went up and it was
me and Psyched the other Asian comedian, So two Asian
comedians battling out on stage. And then after just you

(07:53):
know what, I feel like, too long of just waiting
for the judges feedback on stage. They were really prepping
us for this big moment. Then how he said the
person moving on was Psyched Low and I always got it,
and I held myself together. I gave Psyched a bit hug,
and I don't know, we weren't mild up. But I
said to you this year, I'll be like, hey, Congrat's brother,

(08:13):
you deserve this. I hope you really kill it in
the finals. Please do it for the comedian scene, for
the Toronto comedy scene. I said, this thing is the year.
And we look back at the judges and how he
started saying that, Darren, this was a very tough decision,
but I'm sorry the realities you just didn't have a
good set, and the crowd started booing, and how he said,

(08:34):
hold on, you didn't have a good set. You had
a great set. That's why you're moving on to the finals. Jacob.
I was traumatized. The level of relief and trauma that
I lived through in twenty seconds, I couldn't describe to
you I had. I'm not kidding, I'm not exaggerating when
I said this, Jacob. On the drive home the next day,

(08:54):
I was muttering under my breath saying that the person
moving on to the finals, it's Psyche kid Low. That
sentence was burned in my brain, so to hear that
I actually went through. I was thinking so much, relieved,
so much emotion, to a point that I don't even
think I came off like anything on camera because I
was just like so much the process in such a

(09:16):
short period of time. But now I'm happy I'm here
and I don't want to do it again.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
I'm happy you are here in the finale too. I
definitely think how he's been around Simon too long?

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yes, he really got me there.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Alrighty, So as we're getting forward, tonight's the finale. So
what would it mean to you if Lindsay said, congratulations, Darrenly,
are you just one Canada's got talent?

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah? I think you would mean that Canada recognizes how
difficult it is to put out original content, especially for comedians.
We have to connect with the audience, and not just
on a surface level, but so much so to make
him laugh in a short minute show a few minutes,
and also just know that I'm able to talk about

(10:05):
something that means means a lot to me but hopefully
also means a lot to the Canadian audience to a
point that they will actually vote for me. I think
that's what it means to me. I think at the
end of the day, it is a comedian. All we
ask for is just that personal connection, because you know,
we aren't using any especial effects or visuals or any sound.
We're using our voice to talk to you. And I

(10:26):
think it's a deeply personal thing. So you mean a
lot if I can actually reach Canadians, reach Canadians in
a way that I actually connect with them. And I
really just hope that this will be at least personally
for one step for me to propel the comedy scene
forward and really just back the whole Toronto comedy scene,
because we have an amazing scene here. When people talk
about comedy, they talk about New York, we talk about

(10:48):
La Jacob. There are so many times I have visiting
comedians from the United States telling me that the Toronto
comedy scene is so strong, we are so underrated. And
I really hope to be one of those comedians that
just help propel the industry forward more.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
I know you will, Dren, I know you will. I
know A last question, how are you ready?

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (11:11):
One of the last questions I have for you. So
if you have the opportunity to speak with acts for
audition for AGT in a couple of weeks. What advice
do we share with them as they perform for Holie
Simon and the others.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Okay, so I thought a lot about this, and I
also talk to myself a lot about this, and I
think the reality is it's only going to be one
winner at the end of the day. They are going
to be more people go home disappointed then they are
not disappointed. So I think, first of all, you have
to be very choiceful and intentional on what you want

(11:44):
to get out of this, because the high seting gonna
be so high, the low is going to be so low.
If you have everything riding on the high, I think
it's going to be a very mentally challenging process to
go through. And Jacob, you know this, the entertainment road
is a long road, Like how many years have you
been doing this? Shake up?

Speaker 1 (12:02):
I've been actually blocking and I've been podcasting since twenty
nineteen and blocking since twenty eleven. Next year will be
fifteen years of me in the industry.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Fifteen years. Yeah, and you're still going this is not
the end of it. This is probably for you. This
is still going to be like just midpointing through like whatever,
you know, next goal they want to be at the
next goal. You probably another goal. So I think the
road and entertainment so long, and you never know who
you're going to meet. You never know what kind of
connections that you're going to make. Learn the process of production,
know what it takes to be entertained there on this

(12:33):
TV show with other contestants, and just build a relationship.
And I think that's going to be the biggest takeaway.
And don't get too on the limeline and everything. I
think success and money will come if you're passionate and
if you're hardworking and just trust the process. And I
think that would be my advice.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Amazing and advice Darre And I want to say good
yields are great. No matter what happens, you have you
have a bright teach ahead of you. And I want
to say thanks, thank you so much for taking time
on your schedule to speak with me. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Thank you, Jacob.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Alrighty guys, thank you so much for listening. Until next time,
