It is a privilege to welcome back singer Micah Christian to The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.

Micah is the singer of the Billboard charting classical-crossover quartet, Sons of Serendip. In 2014, the group made its nationwide debut on the long-running NBC talent competition, America’s Got Talent (AGT). Their emotionally resonant and ethereal interpretations of pop music, arranged with a unique blend of vocals, harp, piano, and cello performances, won over the nation and judges Howie Mandel, Mel B, and former judges Howard Stern and Heidi Klum.

After placing fourth in Season Nine, the group released four successful albums (Sons of Serendip, Christmas: Beyond the Lights, Life + Love, and Mosaic) and lifted audiences both nationally and internationally. Micah and Sons of Serendip collaborated with Cynthia Erivo, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops, and the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra. The group also performed at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and closed out the Denver, Colorado, stop at Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision Tour.  In 2022, the quartet was invited to represent the United States in Dubai at EXPO 2022.

On this edition of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Micah Christian previewed  Sons of Serendip’s latest tour, why the band did not compete on America’s Got Talent spin-offs, AGT All-Stars, and AGT: Fantasy League.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
I appreciate you you inviting me on to have a conversation.
I've always enjoyed talking to you over the years, So
I'm just really grateful and I'm.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Really grateful for you.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
I too, one of the You're one of my all
time favorite music acts because I connect you guys took class.
I know we'll get to the love of the anniversary is,
by the way, eleven years since the Guys Foundation.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, eleven years.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well, the thing is, no matter every single time that
I've done recaps or countdowns, you guys always had the
best minister because the thing what stood out to me
is you guys made classicals humild and classical and soul
so well and blending them so well together, and it
made a huge impact.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Yeah, it's been a beautiful journey, and and we've also
gotten into composing as well as songwriting, and yeah, I've
just been really grateful to see how things have developed
over the last eleven years.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, but before we cap about that, we visited that audition.
We got our round the clock back to twenty twenty
because that's when you guys spent visiting my podcast last
So how has sense of serendim evolved as a band
since our last conversation.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, there's there have been a lot of changes of
a lot of things that have happened over the last
five years.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
You know, we went through a pandemic.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
We were doing a lot of virtual concerts at that time,
which helped us get through the pandemic as a group,
and we released an album that year, I remember it
was our it's actually the latest album that we've released
called Mosaic and Thank You, Thank You, which included a
number of songs that we arranged, you know, and tried

(03:11):
to recreate and in a fresh way, as well as
a lot of original material songs that meant uh.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
You know, like had some really deep meaning for us.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
And so that was a beautiful, you know experience of
creating that album and releasing it. And since then we've
had well kindle you know, the original cellist ended up
going into full time ministry at one point, and he's
also teaching and and so we've had some adjustments that

(03:41):
we've had to make there with with the cellist and
and now we work with a couple of different harpists
as well, and so it's it's been a lot of
changes that have happened, but the group continues and the
spirit of the group is still there and the music
is still alive, and we're just really grateful that we
get a chance to to.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Continue to to do what we love, to continue.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
To spread love and joy and hope through the music,
and to still get a chance to travel all over
the country and visit all kinds of beautiful audiences. So yeah,
so I'm just really grateful that the group is still continued,
and every now and then, you know, the original members
will come back together. We just this past May we
had performance in Wisconsin and that was with the original

(04:25):
group for the first time, yeah, which was really special
and so so yeah, so you'll see some new faces
and it will introduce you to them as well, because yeah,
you've been a beautiful part of our journey too, Jacob,
just the things you shared about us.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
We're just really grateful you guys.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Music touched my soul, and I'm so grateful that we're
still having conversations to these days. We've had groups come
in and break up, but the thing is with you
guys being part of my part of my nearly my
fifteen year journey, and I'm so grateful to see both
of us.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, no, that that's that's really special to have been
a part of your journey in that way.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
So thank you, Jacob, You're so welcome.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Micah and I got to say happy fifth anniversary Mosaic.
It celebrates its fifth birthday this year. I gotta say,
I was still listening to I Love You Oh to here,
so I'm like, it's still one of my favorite songs,
and I've still had a rearrangement, like if you guys
are still invited back for AGT and cover for Results

(05:30):
and cover I Love You Still, I was still imagining
like seeing all the lights flashing in like.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Love You Still and oh yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And the exes flashing as well, like and all four
x'es going, like especially Welby and Howie's won as well,
get that whole energy up. So it's still one of
my favorite songs. So what were some of the favorite
memories of you guys recording that album.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
So we got into a process.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
At the beginning of the summer where we said, all right, guys,
we have this window, you know, these two months to
just write and record as much music and arrange as
much music as we can. And so we were just
going down the list, arranging you know, song after song
of the song. And what was interesting was that the
flow was like we had. It was a unique flow

(06:25):
for us because before we would you know, go into
a studio, we would record in the studio, and during
the pandemic, we weren't able to do that, and so
we had all of our own equipment that we got
and and Cordero would start off the arrangement, send it
off to you know, kindle kindle with, then send it
off to Mason, and then I would finish it.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Off with with the vocals.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
And we just did that, you know, for a good
two months, and we're able to record i think fourteen
or fifteen different songs during that time, and so the
process was just moving and it was it was probably
one of our more creative experiences just overall, just because
of the flow that we got into and yeah, and

(07:10):
just and we were really happy with the product, you know,
with how it came out, and uh, and it was
really meaningful for us too because it was our most
creative album because it had the most originals that.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
We've ever released on any album.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
And so, yeah, so it was a good process and
a really wonderful experience.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
And it's amazing that those are some really good arrangements.
Those arrangements are absolutely out of.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
This world there.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I can't I don't think like a modern day music act.
But do you do these phenomenal do these arrangements that
touches your soul? Yes, you have people like you have
like straight note Chaser with Pandectimes with acapella or the
p or the two or Emil or your friends Ameil

(07:56):
and Dario when they ever go get into release new music.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
How have stuff in touches soul?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
But I got to say, there's not a lot of
acts right now that have music that touches the soul
directly using using using a harp, using a key, using
a piano, using a cello.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Yeah, you know, we've I feel like we've found our
own unique little space and and and I think it's
something that I get excited about that I'm really grateful
for because it's it's not a usual, you know, type
type of group. And and as we've toured and and

(08:38):
continue to perform in front of audiences, we've just learned
more and more about just how unique this experience.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Is, in this journey is. And so yeah, we're just
we're just grateful. We're really grateful to found this one
little area where it's our own little path, our own
unique path.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
So awesome.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
So, as I said earlier, this year marks your eleventh Centsserative,
eleventh anniversary.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Yeah, going to.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Auditioning for AGT, that took you all the way to
the final night at the Radio City Music coll which,
by the way, I still say this, the Radio City
Music Call Howard stern Arra still is probably one of
the best eras that ship Ha's ever seen.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
That experience was mind blowing, Like we went into it
having no idea, you know, what to expect, and we
went into it just thinking, yeah, we're just gonna give
our best in each performance, and the next thing you know,
we're at Radio City Music Hall and then getting voted
through round out the round was like what is happening?
And so yeah, that that was so much fun. And

(09:45):
we still, I mean I still keep in touch with
a few of the producers as well from AGT and
and they become good friends too. So yeah, it's been
a beautiful journey. And yeah, so that experience was mind
blowing for us.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
I still say your best best best performance from my
entire run is still Ordinary World because I still I
still get goosebumps listening watching that performance, because that Top
twelve night where you did where you guys did Ordinary
World and Emily West Knights and White Satin and I
don't want to miss a thing. Still musically, probably the

(10:23):
best you three out of the all the acts you
three delivered music wise.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Yeah, that was one of those just special nights for
me in particular. Ordinary World was a song that I
wasn't one hundred percent familiar with before performing it, and
so I had to go through it a number of
times and I had actually lost my voice.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Just this is something I don't think I ever told you, really, Yeah,
I was starting to lose my voice because we were
practicing in it over and over and over again. And
and I remember, just before going out on stage.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
That night, the vocal coach, Autumn Row, who has since
like won Grammy's like she's she's so she's so successful
these days and it but one thing that she did
was she gave me a like a shot of olive
oil and and so I drank that shot and she's

(11:18):
like it'll help. And when I went out there, I
was like I really hope this helps because I haven't
been able to hit this note for the last you know,
a couple of times.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
I've gone over it and uh.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
And then when I went out there on stage, I
was just let it out and I was yeah again,
grateful that it all came out and the work so
and and.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
The best part is then Jan chward Stern was about
ray to chast ice you guys, but it was his
feet right, yeah, alrighty, So I have some good news
to share with you, my friend.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
All right.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Earlier this year, to mark the twentieth anniversary of a
g T, I need my top one hundred acts of
all time. Suns of Sharedip made it. However, it didn't
make the top. It made the top one hundred, It
made the top fifty, it made the top twenty five.
You guys, congratulations are in the top ten.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Thank you, Jacob number ten, exactly.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Thank you, Thank you. That means a lie because you've
seen all the acts and that is really that's really special.
If Jacob, thank you.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Do you want to know who's in that top ten with you?

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Yeah? Sure, Terry Vader, Oh yeah.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
Shane Lynn, Wow, the unbeatable Wow, Barbara Badia, the Clayver Boyans,
Cody Lee, the Ramadani Brothers, Angel City corrap and Fighting Gravity.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Wow, Jacob, what an honor like that? That's amazing.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah, yeah, you got like the thing is what I
did was I thought, Okay, who's the best group, like
of the lark of the small groups?

Speaker 3 (13:05):
True to four.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
You guys had to be in there, my friends, my
friends was the service was so close though I.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
Love them too.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
They made it till number eleven. It was like so tough,
and but I'm like, I have more memories with you guys.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Yeah, they're they're good people too.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
I seriously, I would this would be the perfect You're
the like you guys plus them would be insanv.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
I mean we might have to reach out because I
mean we've connected on Instagram and had, you know, just
some brief conversations and and they know where that we're
rooting for them and we feel their energy as well
and their support, and so.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, that that might need to happen. That would be great.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Absolutely, So I was so yeah because that seriously, I
would love to see you guys do something.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
So while we're still on the subject of AGT.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
So I know you guys competed on the very first
season Champions, but however, many AGT champions loves that compete
on both champions we turned for All Stars and Fantasy League,
and some of the old school fans like myself, a surprise,
you guys did not compete on the spin uffs besides Champions.
So when you guys, would you do you guys have
a desire to compete on All Stars or Fantasy League?

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Why are we not?

Speaker 1 (14:25):
So it never came up.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
And we're the type that we just stay in our
lane and just like kind of focus in on what
we're doing at the moment, and if we get an invitation, awesome,
If not that that's totally fine too. And and so yeah,
it's not something that we think too much about. And
but if we do get the invitation at some letter point,

(14:46):
of course we're going to be there. Like they're they
changed their lives, like AGT completely changed each of our lives.
So yeah, so anytime that they reach out, we'll be there.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
And I hope so too.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
And producers here, please go back and listen to that
because I would love to see Sence the Serendus on
the results show. On because the thing is, you guys
are probably of the music acts, the best, the best
ones from the stern era and also the best ones
from the Radio City music era.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Thank you, Jacob, thank you.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
And I got it. Yeah, but you're so welcome.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
And also what I would like to talk what I
would like to talk to you about is like, basically,
as you like that subject of AGC changed our lives,
but in your humble but in your humble opinion, how
has Americans Got Talent changed the music world?

Speaker 4 (15:41):
Ooh, that's that's a that's a big question, I would say. So,
what it's done is it's helped for undiscovered artists to
be seen by a large because by a large pop
of people, which can which can change everything for these artists.

(16:05):
And so I would say that it's it's a it's
an it's a wonderful platform for up and coming artists
or artists that haven't been discovered to just shoot their
shot and see what happens. And and so I would
I think that over time, you know, it's like as
you get more and more alumni that are coming off

(16:27):
the show, you start to see certain people blow up,
and you know, like and and you know that their
their journeys were deeply impacted by their experience on a
g T. And and if it weren't for a GT,
you know, some of these artists, including ourselves, like our

(16:47):
music wouldn't be heard, or it would be it would
have been a different journey or a harder journey, or
maybe we would be.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Doing other things.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
Maybe I would be, you know, doing another kind of
of work, which was definitely in the cards at that time.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
And so so yeah, so I think that.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
That AGT has been a beautiful platform for young artists
or artists that are are just undiscovered, like and it
gives people a chance to hear some new voices and
some new music.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
So awesome.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
So recently the America's Got Talent Season twenty released their
top name their top forty four and some of them
are going to go down to the to be in
a very unique position that you were, which were finalists,
So as they get as the finalists are revealed.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
And if you had the opportunity, you and the band
had the.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Opportunity to meet with the music apps, it would go
and compete on the live finale, what advice would.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
You share with them?

Speaker 1 (17:50):
I would say to.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
So our experience during our experience, we went into it
with the mindset of we're not here to compete, We're
here to share whatever it is that we've been given
and and so that helped to lower the stakes internally
for us, so that like behind the scenes, I mean,
we were connecting with everybody and just encouraging everybody, because

(18:21):
the better that everybody is, the better that the experience
of the show is. And so so yeah, so so
I would say to go into it with the mindset
of of like, I'm not here to compete, I'm here
to share what I've been given, and and then let
the results be what the results will be, and don't

(18:43):
worry too much about that, because this is a platform
that will change your life if you take advantage of
these moments and and and even if you don't make
it all the way into the finale, it's totally okay.
But but know that that there's there's this platform that

(19:05):
you've been given that if you work hard enough afterwards
and you take advantage of this time, you can it
can it can have a big impact, and it can
create or help help you to launch your your career,
your music career, to be able to do music full time.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
So yeah, that's what I'll say.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
Is just give everything you have before you go on
that stage or when you go on that stage, and
and don't get caught up in the competitiveness of it.
Just enjoy the ride because these moments come and go
and yeah, and now they're just a memory for us,
you know, eleven years later.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Absolutely. And the thing is with AGT, like you've got
with the sharing, your gift is perfect because when survive
or big brother to challenge, they always are so the threat.
If I had the opportunity, if there were to present
a survivor or.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Sit at the judges.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Desk, you know, I'm sitting at that judges desk right right,
although Howie and Simon might be very happy, but I'm
just putting it out there in need of those bunny days.
I would love to sit at that desk.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Oh yeah, absolutely, you'd be great at it. Jacob, thank
you so much.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
But we gotta leave the AGT world now and focus
on on the suns of Sarian universe because starting September sixth,
you on September sixth, you'll be coming to my hometown
of Obo Park, Kansas City, to perform at the Midwest
Trust Center. At Johnson County Community College. So what can
my what can my audience expect from this ship?

Speaker 4 (20:44):
Yeah, so the concert will be a good number of
songs that people know and love already, as well as
original material. And we also do storytelling within you know,
the concert as well, and uh and we what the
hope is is to create an experience that's meaningful, where

(21:09):
we all feel connected, where we come in one way
and then we leave, you know, feeling a little bit
lighter after the experience, and that Yeah, that that people
enjoy themselves, but also like feel connected through the music.
Uh we So I rarely talk about music as a
performance and more of it as a time, like a

(21:32):
moment that we get to spend together with an audience.
And and so that's the mindset that I'm going into
it with. And we we share you know, fun stories,
some that are more humorous, some that are more reflective
and meaningful, and and then also we give an opportunity
to hear from the audience too.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
So it'll be a beautiful night and I'm looking forward
to it.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
And I'm looking for it too.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
I'm so excited to be there and be in the
audience to see you, see you guys before live for
the first time.

Speaker 3 (22:05):
I've been waiting eleven years.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
For Yeah, Jacob, and it'll be so great to meet
you in person.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
So, in addition to Obland Park, Suns of Saranda will
also be performing in Los Angeles. Jacquelin, Missouri Council, blust
Inkosh Wisconsin. So what are you and a band looking
forward to the most by performing in the Midwest?

Speaker 1 (22:31):
So, I mean, every night is a new night.

Speaker 4 (22:34):
Every night we connect with the new audience and we
just never know, like what's gonna happen that night, especially
because we do create a space for the audience to
add to the content of the show as well.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
And so so yeah, you know.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
Every new audience that we encounter that we have a
moment to spend with, we're just grateful and so so yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
I would say that that that's what I'm looking forward to.

Speaker 4 (23:00):
I'm also looking forward to just like the time in
the van when we're driving from venue to venue is
wonderful too, to get a chance to connect with the
guys and we have some really beautiful conversations and we
solve all the world's problems, you know, during during these tours.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
And so I'm looking forward to that.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
We have a lot of good laughs and and I
always leave the tours feeling just more alive and renewed.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
So I'm looking forward to that part as well.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
That's all that's great here.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
So second and last question, why shouldn't my audience get tickets.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
To the tour?

Speaker 4 (23:35):
So I would say they're going to hear something that's
unique and experience something that I think is unique, different,
and and you know, like we don't know what kinds
of things people are going through when they're when they're
coming to the shows too, but we do know that

(23:55):
by the time that they leave, we do hope that
everyone in the space feels a little bit better, even
if it's just for that moment and and so so yeah,
so I would say that if you're interested in hearing
something new, hearing some of your your favorite songs done
in a new way, having a moment to sing with
an audience, having a moment to connect with an audience,

(24:17):
and also with you know us as well, like come
on out.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
We would love to see you and we would love
to spend time with you.

Speaker 3 (24:24):
Awesome, Mike, it's the last question, are you ready?

Speaker 1 (24:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (24:28):
Where can my audience find tickets? And also stream your music.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Yeah, that with social media amazing.

Speaker 4 (24:38):
Yeah, So we're on all the major social media platforms,
so you can find us at Sons of Serendip on Instagram,
We're on YouTube. We have music that we've also released
as well on Spotify and on all the major platforms digitally,
and but it's all just under Sons of Serendip and
