Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jake Seal talks about the real work behind film producing.
Hey everyone, Jake Seal here, glad to be on the
mic today to talk about something that doesn't get nearly
enough attention, the real work behind film producing. You know,
people see the finished product, the movie up on the screen,
the stars walking the red carpet, and they think, while
(00:21):
being a producer must be all glam and glory. But
let me be honest with you, that's maybe five percent
of the job. The other ninety five percent, that's where
the real work lives. Producing is messy. It's intense. It's
solving problems non stop. You're putting out fires before most
(00:42):
people have had their morning coffee. You're juggling budgets, wrangling schedules,
negotiating with finnan seers, all while keeping the creative vision alive.
It's like being a firefighter, therapist, logistics manager, and cheerleader
all rolled into one. Every project starts with a story
of script, an idea, and from there the producer builds
(01:05):
the entire ecosystem around it. You've got to bring in
the right director, cast and crew. You have to find locations,
secure permits, raise money, and keep everything and I mean
everything on schedule and on budget. One of the biggest
misconceptions is that the producer just signs checks and watches
from the side lines. That couldn't be further from the truth.
(01:28):
I'm in the trenches every day from pre production all
the way through post I've had nights where I'm on
the phone with an insurance company at two a m.
Because a storm trashed are set. I've dealt with last
minute actor replacements, visa issues, power outages, you name it,
and through it all the show must go on. What
(01:49):
really separates a good producer from a great one is
the ability to pivot, the ability to say, O, K,
Plan A is gone, here's Plan B, C or D.
That's what the job really is, constant problem solving under pressure,
and doing it in a way where the rest of
the team still feels inspired, motivated and taken care of.
(02:11):
And let's talk about relationships, because this is a people business.
Your reputation matters. How you treat your crew, how you
handle conflict, how you communicate. That's what makes or breaks
a project. You are not just managing a film, you're
managing trust. But here's the truth. I love it. I
(02:32):
love every chaotic unpredictable, exhausting part of it because at
the end of the day, you're helping brings something into
the world that didn't exist before. You're helping tell stories
that move people, challenge people, connect people, and that to
me is worth all the madness. So if you're listening
(02:53):
to this and thinking about becoming a producer, just know
it's not the easiest path, but if you're passionate, will, relentless,
and ready to do the real work, it's one of
the most rewarding. Thanks for listening, Jake Seal
