thousand clams, some deep sea fish, and Juliet Case. Took me all
(02:57):
over La, out to San Pedro, down to Long Beach, took me

I was just about to phone you, Juliet Joe and a new clients.
Yeah, a new client. Itwon't you out in Inglewood right away?
Her life's in danger, that's soyeah. Yeah, she wants protection
(03:21):

twelve guard bands, Avenue, Inglewood. Oh, she was beautiful, my
boy. It came here to theoffice an hour and a half ago.
Lovely, lovely. It never Jeoffrey, and all my vast experience as President
the Lion Detective Bureau has it's beenmy privilege to see such a gorgeous Oh
(03:42):
and she had a voice, myboy. Well, it stroked you when
she talked. And she smelled. As a matter of fact, Reagan,
she smelled of tea tee. She'sa broken Peko tester. You don't tell
me, Yeah, I do isshe feels, smells and taste broken Peko
tea is the very best Jeffrey, best tea. Of course, she wouldn't
think of testing green or oo long, so she's head sure anything else that'll
(04:05):
help. Well, there was onething not now. We mustn't jump to
any rash conclusions, Jeffrey. Buteverything she had on everything was brand new
and all very expensive, very expensive. Maybe some guy likes her, Yes,
yes, I suppose that would beLook Lion. If you think she's
a phony, we just don't takeher Cane now, Reagan, don't start
(04:27):
that. What's the matter she giveus? Does? Julia Jones advanced as
four hundred dollars that's a broth ofclam. Yes it is it. Look
here, my boy just looks whattwo three, four, four, one
hundred dollars vills? Oh, Jeffrey, is life? Wonderful? Life was?
(04:50):
I drove to Englewood. She wasthere. It's like the lion said,
hair tunny eyes that were golden. When she looked at you a certain
way, and she looked at youa certain way. I found out the
guy threatening her life was named AdamGarth. Then we found a place for
dinner and danced. After nine o'clock. I was on time and a half.
(05:16):
Jeff, Jeff, Yeah, Julietti, Jeff, you make a wonderful
body. God, I like mywork, Jeff, mhmm. Just think
this is all we have to dofor days, days till Adam Garth takes
(05:42):
that slow boat to China. Youknow, I'm gonna be sorry when Adam
Garth gets tired, because, Jemine, what reason will I have high on
my own? Right? Good lady, Let's try for a share. Yeah,
(06:10):
I know, Jeff, where thereis let's walk along and have a
few yards. So the lights ofthe long Beach amusement peril blindness, Yeah,
(06:30):
Juliet, Yes, Jeff, AdamGarth, Oh, Adam Garth.
Maybe I ought to take off andhunt him up. Are you just stay
right with me? Sure? It'snice work, But if Garth is gunning
for you, I explain, Ilooked at the guy once. He's a
big lug, Jeff, all thumbsin the brain. I mean, I
(06:53):
looked at the guy. He fellover his thumbs. That could happen.
Well, it is easy to bea girl like me, every guy's dream.
Yes. Nice, you gotta betripled careful. Huh. I didn't
do anything, Jeff, to encourageAdam Garth to think he got crazy all
of us. Adn't he thought heowned me? You told him he didn't,
(07:13):
he said, if that was itand nobody else would I see what
he meant. Adam Garth threatened tokill me, he said, he jeffy,
he said he fixed it to mybeauty. Wouldn't never reckon another guy's
life? Ye hired me to blockhis punch. Yes, Jive, I
want you with me, every minute, all day evenings wherever I go,
because well, because she stopped onthe sand, stood in front of me,
(07:43):
turned up her face. And thatwas when even Juliet's kissed didn't peck
a wall up like that. Somebodysat me from behind my world have brought
you. There was a black shapebetween me and the white cream of the
surf. But I didn't even getmy fists up. All right, Gregan,
(08:07):
I couldn't figure it out for asecond. Where I was. It's
like a dream, far far away, a big production, and Juliet was
in it. Romeo, Romeo?Where four? Roo? Yeah? Wherefore
(08:35):
coming out of it? Now?Are your rigging? Yeah? Yeah,
I guess so, good job Ihit you all right? Oh sure,
well then you'd pick it up oppositesand Riggan. Yeah yeah, okay,
okay, you can stand up.Fine, fine, now just sit down
(08:56):
here on this bench I was standingin front of Thanks, I'll stand sit
Reagan. Yeah, a gun inyour hand yours or mine? Mine?
Yours is in my pocket. Sure, that's how it would be. Juliet
take a walk someplace, that's right. She took a walk with Adam maybe
(09:18):
why yes, Reagan, to getapples, candied apples up on the amusement
Pierre. Yeah, well You're notAdam. You don't fit the description Juliet
gave me. Squat, hairy guy, thumbs in the brain. You're a
little taller, smarter, and Ihave my clothes on. Reagan, quit
kidding. Where's the money? Igot four seventy five in my pocket.
(09:39):
Oh that's enough, lion's eye.You know me. You know one of
those private investigators and be hard todo any kind of a job. This
time. You took the wrong assignmentworking for Juliet Jones. That's right,
Regan, I want sixty seven thousanddollars. Just don't happen to have it
on me. I didn't expect youto. But wherever it is, get
it, bring it to me.Bring it to you like where I told
(10:01):
you, not the kid. Whyyou know where? Oh and Reagan,
the police aren't doing this job forme holding a gun on you getting sixty
seven thousand dollars from you. Maybeyou're wondering why. Nope, hadn't occurred
to me they might of course. All right, Regan, I'll be fair
(10:22):
with you. I have a reasonto keep the police out. When you
come with the money, make itsixty six thousand, keep a thousand for
yourself. Thanks, here's your gununloaded, see you around. He handed
(10:43):
me my gun, walked off.He was a nice guy, lovely,
and he smelled yeah yeah. Whenhe came up close and handed me my
gun, I caught a whiff ofI couldn't place it the first second,
but then I remember what the linehad said about Julia Jones. He'd said
she was lovely, said she waslovely and smelled of tea. That was
(11:05):
it. The tough guy that wassixty seven thousand g starved. He smelled
of tea too. Hello, wakeup, oh, Jeffrey, is half
past ten. I've gone to bed. Where are you payphone booth, Long
Beach Amusement pere, Jeffrey, thisis a toll call that's right lyon.
(11:28):
When Julia Jones talked at the officethis afternoon, she said she was a
tea tester even smelled of tea frombeing around it so much. Jeffrey,
if you've called me in the middleof the night, half past ten,
twenty five cent toll call and thirtycent or whatever it is, did she
say where she tested tea? Whereshe works? You mean I can't remember
a thing like that, And callme tomorrow, Jeffrey, yeah, I
(11:52):
Julia Jones isn't with you. That'swhy you haven't asked her. That's it,
Jeffrey, Jeoffrey, my boy, nothing's gone wrong with our lovely four
hundred dollar case. A couple ofthings. We're in the red on it,
in the Red Moon. We can'tbe why I have the four one
hundred dollar bills right here, Jeffrey, in the shoe, in the chammie
bag tied around my naked Yes,yes here it is under my night show.
(12:16):
Well, with that four hundred buckstaken away, we're only sixty six
thousand, six hundred bucks in thehole on the case. That's the amount
we have to cough up to getout. Geoffrey, Geoffrey, no,
no, I understand now, I'mmachine. This is a nightmare, Reagan,
get out of my dream. It'sa nightmare, lion, only you're
not asleep. So shove your pillowbetween your teeth fat so the stifle your
(12:37):
screams. I'm going to give youthe rundown. Lyon whimpered, moaned,
but he took it. One thingstory shocked his memory into double quick.
He remembered where Juliet Jones had toldhim she worked the Phelan Great East Importing
company place was called Tea Importers,San Pedro Ducks. I phoned Juliet's house
(12:58):
in Englewoo like I figured nobody home. Tracks in the sand down on the
beach hadn't helped much either. Ijust had one thing to go on.
Failing Great East. I drove outto San Pedro Dock section parked dock's empty
(13:22):
street lights, part up part.I unclipped my shoulder holsters. I walked
up the dock. My unloaded gunmight back up a bluff. All right,
holies, voice out of the building, shadow and still no moves.
(13:46):
Oh are you? Who are you? Private detect two credentials identials straight your
looks? Oh well that sounds fair. Over there under the light. There
you go, Here you go,Rigan, private investigator, Beckett's private investigator.
(14:13):
Yeah yeah, working tonight. Yeahyou yeah, dot detail. Keep
an eye and stuff for some warehouseso much big ship is fat guys,
will you work for? I workedfor a fat guy. That's the way
it is in this world? Issmart? Wait for the fat Beckett Failing
(14:35):
Great East warehouse around here somewhere exitup there you go up the stone steps,
turn into the Alley's a door inthe alley. Yeah, see your
peeper. I climbed the stone steps, turned into the alley, and then
I saw high up behind shut blinds, light burning in one window. The
(14:58):
door Beckett had told me about wasn'tlocked. Inside the warehouse, I burned
my fingers with paper matches finding thestairway that led up. After that,
it was easy. There was alight under a door on the fourth floor.
You could just make out the singleword painted on the door, Phelan.
As I opened the door, thedrapes swirl across the room. A
(15:18):
door slammed behind him. I wentin, Well, hello, Reagan,
Hello Phelan. Oh, yes, that's right, it's on the door.
Sit down, Sit on, Regan. I was just thinking tea two cups,
(15:39):
that's right, one for Julia Jones. Well, maybe AD's that way.
She just went out an out ofthe door. You picked her up
the same time you slug me.You must have had a help her,
Beckett. Go on, Regan, tell me what else you know? Beckett,
the private investigator works for you.I suppose I should have figured that
man can't think of everything. Youhaven't thought of the sixty seven grand.
(16:02):
Now it's smart of your Reagan tosee it in that light. Three quarters
of an hour ago, you thoughtI was the one that stole your dough.
Now you know the money was stolen. I didn't catch on at first,
but you told me they're on thebeach. You asked me if I
was surprised the cops weren't getting thedough for you. The only way that
could make sense was that you actuallyhad been taken for dough. Gave me
the amount of yourself sixty seven grandonly Phelan, you told me something else.
(16:26):
Yes, yes, Vegan, Isaid, I had a reason not
to go to the police. Yeah, have a cup of tea. No
thanks, Okay, I understand darkand warehouse, waterfront docks, but I
don't think any harm. Yeah,I'll prove it. Look here the tea
(16:51):
leaves in the bottom of this cup. Yeah, well I read them.
You know. Now let's imagine thisis your faunt go on, well,
well, now here now this formin the tea leaves a coffin that means
look out for trouble. And hereshape of a crab. You've got an
(17:15):
enemy and a claw, Reagan, the enemy wants to kill you. See
anything else? A cock screw, which means don't be curious about why you
don't want to go to the cops. I guess you can find your way
back downstairs, Regan. I'll seeyou around, Yeah, maybe you will.
(17:51):
I had the pieces of the puzzle, jagged jigsaw pieces failin a failin
Gray East, tea importer. He'dbeen robbed of sixty seven thousand dollars.
Was aout to recover the little himselfbecause he was scared to go to the
cops. My client, Juliet wasmixed up in it. That made sense.
She worked for Phelan as a teatester. She'd blossomed out all of
a sudden, and you closed fromhead to foot. She had a hundred
plam notes to pay private detectives. Then there was Adam Garth gunning for Juliet.
(18:17):
Juliette said, I hadn't met himyet, but I didn't have to
wait long. I let myself outof philin Great East Warehouse by the door
that opened on the alley. Thatwas when I got a big surprise,
not who but what she did.Jeff, Juliet, I knew you came
out this way. I've been waitingcome you beat it out of Phelan's office
(18:38):
upstairs just when I got there.Ale explain all that later. But now
there's something more important. The reasonI've been waiting here. I've been hoping
you'd get here in time to whathold me? And you are in time?
Not too early, not too late. Oh, Jeff Holm, are
you nut? Jeff? I've gota good reason, a good, good
reason. Jeff. You've got tohold me close to you and kissed me.
(19:00):
You are holy. I think thiswill do it nicely. I stand
back, Jeff, I said, stand back, lady. You've skipped your
rocker. Jeff. I've got toget back from I've got to get Jeff.
She hurled backwards, flatten herself againstthe far wall of the alley,
(19:21):
and then I saw end of thealley, away from the docks, man
standing watching us. He couldn't makeout his face. But it's past your
feet apart. Right hand forward meantgun ready. I sucked back flat to
the wall across from Juliet. Sixberts of orange from the black silhouette.
Yeah, but mister Jellis didn't score. Instinct Anchor threw my right hand to
(19:42):
my uncliped shoulder. Hoster brought myguns already. Then I remembered my gun
empty, reading why don't you snowbullets? Baby, gun's not loaded?
Oh, you stinking dumb snap, you're dumb chalmouth. And I paid four
hundred bucks for this you did huhwhat do you? Oh? No,
Juliet, exactly what did you payfor one hundred bucks for it? Like
(20:04):
you a little out? Juliet randown the alley toward the docks. Only
I decided to play it away fromthe docks instead of tord. I couldn't
go both ways, and the guywho fired the shots had disappeared in the
other direction. It didn't figure he'dbe hard to find. All I'd have
to do is make myself available andhe'd find me. Only I didn't expect
him to find me. So soon, walk straight ahead, don't look back,
(20:30):
and don't try nothing. Okay,Garth, Oh how come you know
me? Well? I was bornin the dark of the moon. Hey,
don't make no gag. You're healed. I got a gun with no
bullets in it. Don't make nogag. Oh, it's the truth.
Look, Garth, we've got thingsto talk about. I don't know who
you are. I'll show you nofunny st sure not here. Look Jeff
(20:53):
Reagan, private detective. Here ismy license. M oh looks okay,
Garth. You stole sixty seventh grandfrom Phalan? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I did. That's right, YeahI did. You seem pretty set
up about it. I stole sixtyseven thousand dollars from mister Phelan. I
don't know what come over me.I'm sorry I didn't and I am ready
to go to prison and pay thepenalty for my crime. Wait a minute,
(21:17):
turn off the gramophone. I don'tknow what you mean, Garth.
Where's the sixty seventh grand? Oh? I was a crazy fool. I
tried to double it. I don'tknow what come over me. I went
to Las Vegas, Nevada, andI lost every cent of it. Yeah,
yeah, that's what I did,Garth. You gave the sixty seventh
grand and most of it to JulietJones before you left. Well, no,
(21:41):
no, no dat what happened?Oh yes, Garth, you gave
the sixty seven gis to her.You went to Las Vegas to pretend to
lose it gambling. You came backhere to California. If Phelan had reported
the theft, you'd have been caught. You expected that, you meant to
serve your time. You pick it. It was worth it. Juliet waiting
for you when you got out.Yeah, yeah, Welsh, she will
be. That's how we planned it. Yeah yeah, sure, Well you
(22:07):
want to start saving that time,Garth, so come on, let's go.
I drove him to the police stationin Long Beach. I let him
think Juliet's plan had just misfired.I didn't have the heart to tell him
what a real plan was. WhenGarth was booked out of the case,
(22:29):
I had other business. I wantedto see Juliet bad and I figured I
knew how to find her. She'dleft her coat in the check room at
the Long Beach place where we'd dinedand danced. She'd be going there to
pick it up. I'd wait onthe pier and get on her trail.
That's how it worked out. Hello, Juliet Jet, how could you?
How could you possibly have found mehere? Not tough? You unchecked your
(22:52):
coat just now to dine a danceplace I figured you wouldn't, and you
followed me out here on the amusementpier. That's it. Well, well,
I'm glad to see you. Jeffsure. Yeah, case Garth shows
again, you want me to protectyou. Well, yes, of course,
yes, of course that's it.Sorry I lost you at the ducks.
Oh well, that's understandable. Youhave the confused I took off after
(23:14):
Garth. I don't suppose you've foundno No. I guess like you said,
I am a no good Donald Schamas. Oh well, now, Jeff,
I was upset. I wasn't responsiblewhat I might have said, what
I might have done, Jeff, and knew Grath was in range watching.
Yes, that was it. Whyyou wanted to get close to me because
(23:34):
Goth was wrong? Well, yes, Jeff, because I was scared.
I wanted protection. Sure, lady, you and I got things to talk
about, things things like a fallguy, like a poor dumb cluck in
Las Vegas, Nevada, pretending alot sixty seven thousand bucks, like that
guy being willing to come back hereget caught service time, expecting you to
be waiting with the dough when hecame out. You did find Adam,
(23:56):
God, I found him, andI didn't tell him all I knew.
Do you know why you hired me? You wanted me to be around you
all the time, guard you fromGarth, you said, Oh no,
you wanted to make Guarth shooting ironjokes? Why on earth I wanted a
thing like that? So he shouldkill me and go up from murder,
and I kill him in self defense. Either way, you'd have the sixty
seven thousand clear for yourself. Youare Smith. Thanks. Come on,
(24:23):
we're going to the clink. Jeff, Yeah. Are you sure there isn't
anything else we could discuss, suchas Jeff, I I know a place
we could talk a loan, justup the midway. It might be worthwhile.
All right, let's go. Shewas thinking of one thing, buying
(24:53):
me off. I was thinking ofsomething else. There was one little bit
of the puzzle I didn't have,so I went along. She wouldn't get
away, not where she took meanyway. There was a big steel tank
at one side of the midway, tank full of water, water, full
of fish, and down into thewater and fish twenty feet down. Spectators
were lowered in a diving bell.Juliet and I bought tickets, went down
(25:18):
the two of us alone. Thisone reminds me of you. That's a
man eater, isn't it, JemYeah, long sleek, beautiful tiger shark
JAF over here through this port holeon the side of the diving goal.
(25:41):
Look, yeah, lady, overthere in that corner of the tank octopus.
That octopus suggests you, Jed,I mean tentacles reaching out in every
direction, reaching for whatever there maybe a crass. What you mean is
can you buy me off? I'vegot a lot to buy you. Walk
(26:03):
with JAF sixty seven thousand years andgood lucks, good lucks, JAF.
Something else where you and I couldmake a lot of money. Black moving
phil That's what I came down tothis diving bill to find out about.
Yes, sure, baby, sotalk about phaelin she talked about Phelan.
(26:30):
Turned out all he brought in fromthe Great East wasn't broken pekot. In
a couple of minutes, the lastpiece of the jigsaw was in place.
I had leads that when the FederalNarcotic Squad had got its teeth in,
would send Phelan to the Pokey foran even longer stay than Gods and Juliets.
So that wrapped it up. Yeah, had wrapped it up. All
(26:51):
of a sudden I noticed something. It was silent. The diving bell.
The air tube had stopped hissing. There were a couple of windows in the
outside wall of the tank come onfor customers by letting them glimpse the fish
and the diving bell down in thewater inside. Face appeared in one of
the windows, grinned at me.Beckett Helen's gunsil Becker drew his forefinger slowly
(27:15):
across his throat. I was asdumb a schamus as Juliette said Jeffcket.
(27:37):
I can't breathe, jev I'm scared. She passed. I was next.
Everything was getting wavery water. FishI saw through the portal, fine thing.
One fish looked in at me.Loo looked like my boss, Anthony
(28:03):
jay lyone. I know all right, now stand back, stand back,
everybody give him out. Our freestimepacker. Isn't a dangerous Jeffrey. Jeoffrey,
my boy, are you all right? What happened? You will,
Jeffrey. I came here to theLong Beach Amusement Pierre after you telephone.
(28:23):
I was worried about our four hundreddollar case, you see. Yeah,
And when I got here, thatman Beckett was looking into the tank making
suspicious gestures. He was tangled withhim. No, not exactly Jeffrey.
I found the operator of the tank, Hey Beckett had knocked him out.
Jeffrey. I revived him through waterin his face, you see, and
he and I managed to get airgoing to you and Juliet again. The
(28:44):
police were attracted by the disturbance,my boy, and they rounded up Backett,
and they've taken charge of Julia too. All this time I was as
cold as a man. Yes,yes, my boy, you were lion.
One thing, Yes, Jeffrey, how come you're sopping wet? Yeah,
it was nothing, my boy.I saw you in peril in that
(29:06):
diving Belle. My heart overflowed.I dove into shavell save me through the
steel wall of the diving bell.Geoffrey, I was going to tear those
steel walls apart with my bare hands. Lion, you were gonna do that
for me. Maybe I've been misjudgingyou here. Don't bother me, ladd
you well, Geoffrey will forget thepast. He'll let bygones be bygones.
(29:27):
No man really sees another's metal tillthe test of battle. The lion get
away from me? Shall bothering me? Boy? Go away somewhere, mister
Ryan, here's your shammy skin bagfull of money. You dove into the
tank to try to save money.I am now Geoffrey here, don'tly chice
(29:48):
yourself. My boy, you've beena sick man, you know he Jeffrey,
what are you doing? Oh?No, not again. Jeff Reagan
Investigator was written Tonight by William Fiefield, produced and directed by Stirling Tracy,
(30:14):
and stars Paul Dubov as Reagan, with Frank Nelson as Anthony J. Lyon.
Original music is by Decor Run.Jeff Reagan Investigator is heard transcribe each
week at the same time over aCBS Alan Botzer speaking and inviting you to
be with us again for more suspensemystery adventure with Jeff Reagan Investigator, Welcome
(31:56):
Back. Probably leap one actor makesthe nineteen forty nine to nineteen fifty version
of Jeff Reagan work so well isFrank Nelson. He was such a great
comic actor, I mean motional timeradio actors could do comedy, don't get
me wrong, but he was probablybest known for his work with Jack Benny
(32:23):
as the store clerk. His characterof the Lion is not quite that big,
but he can go really for abig comic reaction. When he asked
you, and I was cracking upat the end of that episode. The
mentions of tea at the beginning ofthe episode were interesting, and I think
(32:45):
this episode was probably before green teatook off as this very big health thing.
And I'm a huge green tea drinker, and I kind of feel like
I should get green tea whenever Ihave a chance to get tea. But
some of that orange Pico stuff isamazing, so sweet, and Earl Gray
(33:07):
is pretty good, and not justbecause Captain Baccard drinks it. But I
don't recall you're in an episode wherefolks talk much about tea preferences. You
know that may not be the mostexciting topic, So I guess that's perhaps
the reason. All right, listenercomments and fadeback now, And we have
a couple of comments on YouTube regardingLow the Gentle Earthworm Goden never right,
(33:32):
simply what a title, and Iwould agree, And I think Jeff Reagan
pretticularly in this nineteen forty nine fiftyiteration, had some really intriguing titles.
Forty eight version with Jack Webb wasgood, but they essentially sounded like,
(33:53):
you know, your typical eating warstory with Jeff Reagan. You get things
like she's lovely, she's engaged, she eats soybeans, or if I knew
you were coming, I would havewrecked a train. Now, a lot
of these titles invoked parts of popularculture that we're known in nineteen forty nine
(34:15):
and fifty, but which we don'tnecessarily know what they're even referencing, And
as we've talked about, some ofthem can be pretty obscure. This one
actually seem plot related, like Idon't know if there's any reference in the
episode title of today's episode outside ofthe plot, And actually I still like
(34:38):
the title quite a bad. Ihad the idea that I might research where
all of the titles of this particularseries, what they related to in the
popular culture of the time, andwrite an article on it, but I
realized that would probably be interesting onlyto me. But at any rate,
(35:00):
they definitely do capture your attention tomake you wonder what is this about and
what is this title for? Allright, And finally we have a comment
from Eileen who writes regarding the episodeWorm Farmer, who are immediately remembered the
time britt Snyner on Night Court whenBob and June Wheeler were brought for poultry
(35:23):
detonation after failing to be worm farmers. Go look it up. Well,
I guess that is a good tipfor listeners of the podcast. I did
not actually catch Brent Spiner on NightCourt, which apparently helped give him his
(35:45):
big break to play Lieutenant Commander Dataon Star Trek, but there are clips
on YouTube, so if you wantmore worm farmer content with a bit of
comedy, I might be worth checkingout. Thanks for the tip, Ali.
