The original air date March twenty second, nineteen fifty and the title is

(02:00):
The Hollywood Story. My name's Reagan. I worked for Anthony Jay lyon Detective
Bureau. They call me the Lion'sEye Jeff Regan Investigators, starring Frank Graham

(02:29):
as Regan, with Frank Nelson asAnthony Jay Lion to stand by for mystery
and suspense and adventure in tonight's story, The Hollywood Story or h is for
the many things you gave me.It was a great day for the Lion.

(02:53):
Money all over the place, motionpicture money, Hollywood money. In
all we had two far will stopone guy from seeing another guy. A
very simple job, except when aguy got in the way of the wrong
bullet. The Hollywood Story got underwayalong about noon in the Lions office.
He was sitting behind his desk andgolfed in a cloud of fifty cents cigar

(03:15):
smoke. But through the smoke, the gleam in his eyes cut like a
sunset strip searchlight announcing the opening ofa popcorn stand. Jeffrey coming coming.
It's a wonderful day. Yeah,it looks like rich Uncle Dye fats No,
no, Jeffrey. But something wonderfuldid happen? We got a client,
yeah what else? A rich client? Yeah? Ego on Jeffrey,

(03:38):
Look fat's o unknown mind reader. What's the story, Jeffrey, The big
moments come at last. We've beenhired by Progressive Pictures incorporating movie money.
Oh more than that, Jeffrey, this case has all the year marks of
a big thing. I happen toknow that the famous movie star Larry Winters
is involved here, you see,Jeffrey, we're getting on the inside.

(04:00):
Thank you, head a hopper.Yeah. I also happen to know this
case involves a two million dollar pictureand a real future for the Lion Detective
Agency. To think of it,my boy us being on the list of
the big producers. But which list? Now you run right out to Progressive
Pictures, Jeffrey. Look up misterHP Lovejoy, the big producer. He'll
give you the complete details. AndJeoffrey, above all else, be on

(04:23):
your best behavior. The future ofthe agency depends on you. Really a
big things b. It's colossal, gidantic stupendi. Yep, that's movie business
all right. There was a girlbehind the wire cage who summoned a big

(04:46):
studio guard with a bigger gun.The guard dressed in enough gold braid to
worry. An admiral, took medown the studio lot to a door with
an electric guy, and the eyechecked me over and okayed me for another
guard behind another a cage. Acouple of cages later, I got to
a secretary and five secretaries. Afterthat, the door opened without benefit of

(05:08):
an electric guy, and I stoodstaring into the worried, beskeptical face of
HP Lovejoy himself. Your Regan, come in, Come in then, waiting
for you? Sit here, havea cigar. No thanks, I'm going
to get to the point, misterReagan. It's about my boy, Larry
Witten, your son. No,no, no, of course not.
Larry Witt is the big star.I called him my boy. I discovered

(05:28):
him four years ago. He andKitty Train are the two biggest stars we've
got. I don't want to seeanyone, miss Clatch, no calls,
no interruptions. But send sid Renierin. Well, that takes care of
that. Now where was I areyou about to tell me about Larry?
Oh? Yes, oh sent forme, HP. Yes, this is
Regan Regan, this is my assistantSidner, Hello, Regan about the winners

(05:50):
matter? Hig HP. I checkedthe files on it again. Definitely dangerous.
Yeah, sit out, sid Letme see you. Now. Where
was I Regan about your actor LarryWinters? I said, I didn't want
to talk to anyone that's cluck, that includes you. I'll let me see
you were about to tell Regan aboutLarry HP. Oh, yes, sham,

(06:13):
you follow me so far? Regan? Oh sure, I like a
man who can follow a conversation. Now about the feet of just one little
thing, love joy. Yes,what about Larry Windows? Why? I
oh, oh, that's right.I didn't tell you that part of it.
Yeah, that part of it.Well, well, Reagan Windows is
a model start, except when hispal Stubby Adair comes to town. And

(06:36):
Stubby and Larry were in the armytogether. Check. And when Stubby shows
up in Hollywood, he looks uphis pal Larry, and that's where the
trouble starts. You know how itis with old army pals, Reagan,
One drink leads to another. Didn'tyou know Larry Winters never touches the stuff.
Yes, yes, that's what Isaid. Larry never touches the stuff,
but he can't stay away from Stubbyscrewy deals. Last time, it

(06:58):
was a lost gold mine. Bythe time Stubby got through convincing Larry what
fun they'd have nothing, Larry wasgone per week stop production on the picture
he was shooting cost the studio ofPorture, and Stubby is in town again.
This guy's real bright h p.Dabby Adair is in town again.
But Larry Winters is in Long Beachon location shooting the big Southsea Island picture,

(07:18):
two million dollar bucket. We've gotto finish that picture on schedule,
a lot of money invested, Reagan. You understand, sure, I understand.
Now here's the assignment, Reagan.Heap Stubby your dare away from Larry
for one week, just one week, and then a thousand dollars in it
for you you collect after the picture'sfinished. Well that sounds fair enough,
But wait a minute, waynute,it won't be easy. Larry's got a

(07:40):
new contract coming up. If hefounds out we kept Stubby under cover,
he won't shine. It's got tobe cautious, Regan, very cautious.
You've got to handle Stubby with kidloves, show him a good time to
be nice, don't let him knowwhat's happening to him. That's it.
Okay, you bought a detective.Where do I find Stubby? You're there,
Hotel Rich, Hollywood. Tell Rich, we got him a suite there.

(08:01):
He arrived this morning. We toldhim he'd see Larry tonight and I
fill it in from there. Youfill it just one more little thing,
Regan. We also told him amajor executive from a studio would show him
the town. That's me, theman, the genie a one week Regan.
You're the executive producer with Progressive Paris. Stubby is concerned. Okay,
I'm a producer, say Regan, has anybody got you under contract? Well

(08:31):
that's the way it started, justme and a character named Stubby. And
there I got to the Hollywood Ritsabout one thirty and knocked on the door
to room seven oh nine. Myweek's work, peecked out. Yeah,
mister are there? Yeah, namesRegan, Progressive Pictures. Oh come then,

(08:54):
mister Reagan. The gotta be careful. You never know who's trying to
cop the loot. The loot.Well, it's not so much yet,
but give me one week and I'llshow your action, real action. Oh,
you've got a big deal, bigcolossal like you who picture fella say
gold mine, Say who told you? Oh that's right, Larry must have

(09:15):
told you, Oh that gold minewas a bum steer. This is the
real thing, real thing. I'mgonna let you in on it, Regan,
since you know Larry, after all, you're his bars. Yeah,
that's right, Regan. I havegot on me at this very minute a
piece of paper and that's worth overa million bucks. No, yeah,

(09:35):
I got a thirty day option ona little piece of property up near Baker's
Field. That well, that good, good, stupendous like you fellas,
say, Regan, This hunk ofland is on top of one of the
hottest, blackest, bubbingest pools ofoil in the whole world. That's pretty
big. I'd like to let getin on it, Regan, but I

(09:56):
can't. I just just can't.Saved it all for Larry. That's trying.
My pal, Larry, him andme was in the army together,
Regan, whip pals, And you'regonna let him sink a few hundred thousand
and drilling an oil well with youfor old time? Say nah, no,
it don't take that much. Maybesixty seventy thousand and dropping the bucket
compared to what's coming out of that. Well, it's pretty friendly of you

(10:16):
there. Just just call me Stubby. I'll tell you what, Regan.
I like you. I like youfine, And you're a friend of Larry.
So you're gonna let me invest inan oil? Well, well,
so at least I can do fora friend of larryes. How much are
you gonna let me investubb? Oh, I thought maybe you could come in
for say, maybe twenty thousand.I'm saving the big size for Larry,

(10:39):
but you can have some. That'svery considerate. Nothing really. You see,
my option on the oiland is upin the week, one week from
today, So I either got toget the door to extend it and start
drilling or all is lost. Exactly. It's tragic, unless, of course,
I see Larry. He'll back me. You can bet on that him
and me was in the army together. H yeah, sure, well how

(11:01):
about lunch, Stubby, good idea. In fact, I got a still
better one. I'm listening. Seeingas how you're a big shot at the
studio, Reagan, I figure i'dlet you tour me around. Do what
show me the works? How itprogressive pictures? You make like a guide,
Reagan and me, I'll be ahic. Sure it was screwing a

(11:26):
little man with an oil well anda star who likes to take gambos.
Stubby a dare, and I tookthe elevator down to the lobby and started
outside in my car. Only that'swhat I've got screwing. Here A tall
narrow guide drifted away from one ofthe pillars in the hotel lobby and ambled
out the door behind us. Stubbyand I turned left, so did the
tall guy. I passed my carand let's Stubby into a drug store.

(11:50):
Hey, what are we going herefor? Cigarette? Stubby? Take it
easy. The tall narrow man waswearing a brown suit and a brown felt
hat. He was in the drugstore. Outside he was still with us,
and brown suit looked in a shopwindow and watched us as we got
in the car. He couldn't figureit, but one way, somebody put

(12:11):
a tail job on Stubby. Itthere and then he was gone. Brown
suit, brown hat knelled into thecrowd. Stubby climbed into my car expectantly,
and we headed out to Progressive Pictures. An hour later, we finished
up lunch in the studio commissary andStubby was ready for the forty cent tour.

(12:35):
But I had a question first, thanks, Now we take the tour.
Huh in a minute? Question?First, sure, Regan, you
want to know about that oil willHuh? I knew you'd get bit by
the bug. I want to knowabout a tall guy in a brown suit
and a brown hat, Stubby,A guy who tailed us when we left
your hotel. Hey, you kidnasshim. Don't play dumb with me,

(12:56):
Stubby, you've got eyes in thedrugstore. I saw you're watching him.
Ah, you gotta know, huh, Yeah, I gotta know. Okay,
Regan saying is how you're practically apartner of mine. I saw the
guy in the brown suit. He'sbeen telling me since this morning when I
got in town. That's why youwere cautious back at the hotel when you
opened your door. Yeah, that'swhy. Who is he? I don't

(13:18):
know? You've got ideas, Reagan. Don't pin me this way. You're
gonna make me say something you won'tlike. You better say it, Stubby.
We've got time. Well you'll askfor it. You know who I
thinkure brown suit is? Reagan?A private dick hired by your picture company,
maybe be by you hired to keepme from seeing Larry whittis what like

(13:39):
you said, Regan, I ain'tdumb that guys are shamus. If I
ever saw one Larry's somewhere on locationshooting a picture, I can figure that
much. And the company's trying tokeep me off him until after the picture.
You got that all figured out?Sure, I have, Reagan,
I'm sorry you made me show itthat way. No hard feelings, huh
no, no hard feeling? Minute? What is her reging? Stay right

(14:01):
here, Stubby, I'll be back, hey, Regan, paying his check,
walking out the main door. Thecommissary was Brown's suit, the tail
guy. I left Stubby Adair lookingpuzzled and walked after Brown's suit. It
was supposed to be conversation, butBrown's suit didn't like the idea. He
glanced back, saw me and walkedfaster. That's when I walked faster.

(14:24):
That's when Brown's suit started to run, and that's when I followed. Anybody
too scared for conversation had more answersthan I'd thought. Brown suit slid through
an alleyway and I was behind him. Medieval village cobblestone streets and knights in
armor, and then Brown Suit swungacross the setting onto another one. It
was old West dirt streets, cowboysspitting the back of It was a chase
through the land to make believe, until suddenly Brown's Suit headed for another alleyway,

(14:46):
and this one was no set.Big executive office building on the left,
dressing rooms on the right, atthe end of the road dead end.
That's when Brown's Suit suddenly turned lookedat me like he was seeing through
me. I grabbed the shoulder holster, I dropped down, grabbed from mine,
and we both leveled guns at thesame time. Brown Suit folded in
a heap and the gun in hishand fell to the ground. I moved

(15:07):
down to the end of the deadend street beside him. Brown Suit's gun
was cool, unfired, My guncool unfired. Brown Suit was dead,
but neither he nor I had fireda shot. In ten minutes, there

(15:43):
were more studio soldiers surrounding me thanGrant took with him to Richmond. I
got a quick trip to the officeof HP Lovejoy, and two of the
local gendarmes sat behind my chair whilewe waited for HP himself to show up.
That gave me plenty of time tothink. Love Joy at high the
lion on me to keep Stubby atthere away from the big movie star,
Larry Winners. Stubby an old buddyof Larry's as the kind of a guy

(16:07):
with lost gold mines and oil wells, and Larry was the kind of a
guy who invested in him. Onlywhen I took Stubby out of the studio
for a tour, a character ina brown suit tail listened, then got
bullets in his chest for the trouble. That's when the studio cops arrived,
with me standing over the body. That's when I went to love Joy's office.
Okay, Regan, give me thestory, the full production. No,

(16:30):
no, wait a minute, let'sclutch get Johnson, tell him to
contact the papers. I don't wantanything out on this until I give the
word and get me sin all right, Regan, nine with you so far,
Now tell me the rest of it. I picked up Stubby Dara at
his hotel. We were tailed ofthe studio by a tall guy in a
brown suit, and definitely h aboutthe business down back to the officers.

(16:52):
I got some answers. Okay, sit Regan catches go on, shit,
go on. The guy killed wasa private detective named Smith or Jones or
Shoping. His name was Clayton.Yeah, he'd been hired to tail Stubby
you there, and he was armed. Maybe he was going to kill Stubby.
He was hired to tail me andhe wasn't going to kill anybody.
Yes, that's what's that you're saying, Reagan. I checked his papers as
operator's license and his gun. Somebodyhired him to tail Jeff Reagan, not

(17:15):
Stubby. You there, Regan, you realize what you're saying. I realized
somebody's in a big, big doublecrossing. Somebody else around here knows about
it. Yeah, so that's theway it goes. Oh, like I
said, HP, this guy isa genius. Finish your story, said,
have you got anything else? Onemore thing? S w there's missing?
What did you say? The copshave been looking all over for him?
Huh? Go on, what's themeaning of this, Regan? I

(17:37):
hired you to stay with a darenine minute. I don't like a soppy
job. Well, then get somebodyelse, HP. Reagan, take it.
You had me to stop Stubby. You are from seeing Larry Where's your
star? All right? When anotherguy shows up tailing this. My job
is to get a check on him, and so you let Stubby your dare
slip right out of your hands.I don't like that, Regan. I
don't like that at all. OhHP, Reagan's doing the best he can.
And I'm going to tell you something, Regan. I cleared you from

(18:00):
suspicion after my cops found you standingover a dead man. I had you
brought here and I said, Igive them a story. Well maybe I
won't. Maybe I'll let them haveyou. Reagan. You couldn't make it
stick, love Joy, not evenyou. But I try. Regan.
I'm giving you until midnight to nightto find Stubby. It there. You
don't, I let the LA PoliceDepartment have you poor as long they like

(18:22):
you. Understand that, don't you? Yeah? Yeah, I understand that.
Thanks, love Joy, Thanks forall your help. Reagan. You
need it. You need it.It was four thirty and I had him

(18:42):
til midnight, and I needed facts, and a lot of them fast.
There were two leads to take, and I made a nickel down payment on
the first one, and the DJLine Detective Agency I got to work for
you very well. What, Regan, you don't have to get that enthusiastic
fat so its enthusiastic you numsco oh. If I can only get my hands

(19:04):
on your relions, take it easy. It might interest you to know I've
just had a call from k CionHP love Joys. He does not like
the way you're handling this case.He most decidedly does not like the way
you're handling this case. Well, those things happen lyon you know how.
It is a personality cash, noexcuse. I want you to be careful,
Reagan. I want you to beon your best behavior. I told

(19:26):
you this shop meant a lot tothe age Fats So, I've on't eve
been on the case a couple ofhours. Give me some time time.
I'll give your time, all right. If you don't pull this one out
of the fire, Regan, you'replant h okay, okay, pats So
saved the hot air. You seehow much hot air there is? I
guaranteed, mister love Joy we finishthis shop. Reagan, you've bungled it

(19:47):
bad. Now. If you don'tstraighten it out right, you don't have
to come to work tomorrow. Goodday. Well, that's care of any
help from Lyon. So I movedon to lead number two. Clayton,
the private dick who had been tailingStubby at army, was shot from one

(20:07):
of two places, from a windowin the office building on the left of
the dead end street, or froma dressing room door on the right.
When he turned toward me and reachedfor his gun, he was looking past
me, looking at somebody behind mewho killed him. Five doors with numbers
on him. Four of them werenothing, the fifth was And I tried
it would welcome in, Darling, goody stand there, you know you get

(20:33):
me a way. Kitty trained hera dressive pictures gift to American males.
She drifted off from behind the screenand looked me up and down. That
made us even. He was talland through the net and thin in some
places and not thin and others. And her eyes sparkles like hot comments.

(20:56):
With no place to go in,Darling, I'll save you everything. Everything.
Well that's what you want to know, isn't it my idea? When
Kitty Tang gets through with your dolling, you'll know everything. But yeah,
I was born on a small farmin Iowa. My mother and father were
very poor. I Milt Coyle's helpedplant corn joined the four Age Club at

(21:18):
a very tender age. My motherencouraged me in my career. She sent
my fixture to a Hollywood beauty contestsoon the studio exactly wa, Wa,
wait a minute, am I goingtoo fast doing? Look, lady,
I didn't come here to get thestory one of those Well, darling,
if you insist, I wasn't bornan Iowa at all. I was born

somebody gave me the name of agood agent, and I summed to write
a Hollywood Look. All I wantis a few wancers. Oh very well,
darling, I might have known thatyou would never be satisfied with a
routine interview. I'll give you anexclusive my life, marriage and because John
didn't like the way I did myhair. It broke me up, darling,

(22:03):
It really broke me up. That'swhen I began to see doctor Hidegger,
doctor Heidegger, the avenue cicatrist.Tell me, darling, why is
it that old psychiatrist Rananan? Thanks? Thanks a lot. Oh must you
leave so soon? Darling? There'sreally more, much more. Yeah,
yeah, I must leave. Bythe way, my name's Jeff Reagan,
not Darling, and you are HarveyChannel, the reporter of the New York

(22:29):
World needs Nope, my error. It's a long lady. I'm mister Reagan.
Way. After all, an interviewis an interview, not today,
Darling. I took care of leadnumber two, and that's when I decided

(22:49):
on a couple of phone calls. The first to miss Clutch HP Lovejoy secretary,
who told me after five minutes ofwrangling, but Larry Winters was staying
at the Surftown Hotel in Long Beachuntil the picture he was working in was
finished, Room six fifteen. Thesecond call was to Bill Gregg, who
writes a column for the La DailyNews. He calls it speaking of oil,

(23:10):
and we did oil near Bakersfield,he told me plenty. And then
he gave me the name of ageologist in Bakersfield, and I placed a
quick call to his office. Rudolpht ram Brand speaking. This is Jeff
Reagan. Friend of mine, suggestedI had called you for some information about
the oil fields up there. Ohwell, mister Peters, the geologist isn't
in. But I'm his assistant,Perhaps I can help you. Rem Brand's

(23:33):
the name Rudolph ram Brand Yeah,no relation to the famous ram Brand.
People always ask me that, andI always tell him no, no relation
to the famous Rembrandt. Yeah sure, Look, I'd like to check on
some property in that vicinity. Urse, I'd like to be related to the
famous Rembrandt. Just imagine he mighthave willed me one of his paintings,
and think what that would be worth. But yeah, things never worked out

(23:53):
that way, do they. Ihad a friend once named Rockefeller. But
you think he was a related Hemost certainly was not. Look, mister
Rembrandt, all I want to knowis about prospects on some oil property in
your area. It's all. That'swhat you want to know. Well,
I'm sorry I can't help you onthat. You see, I'm only mister
Peters assistant. He's a geologist. Now, if you'll call him later,

(24:15):
I'm never mind. I headed forLong Beach, Long Beach sailors and fog
and two bit rides, carnival wheelsand conmen and electronic bingo and popcorn always
everywhere popcorn a kind of salt sprayedjoy ride with built in safety features.

(24:41):
The Surftown Hotel, eleven floors ofsteel and glass. Was at the end
of Ocean Avenue. Two marble dolphinsguarding the door. I went in and
that was it, slinking near theelevators. Little guy stooped shoulders my target
for a night. Stubby, itair, kay, Stubby day. Oh

(25:02):
hi you're Reagan. It's a nicenight. Huh love that ocean smell.
Never mind the ocean smeller there whereyou're being you're asking me after you ditched
me the commissary fine pad you turnout to be. You know what,
Reagan, I may not let youinvest in my oil. Well listen,
Stubby, quit playing games. Aguy who was killed this afternoon. You
know that killed your kid in Reagan, I heard about you. Hollywood guy's

(25:22):
great kids. Nobody's kidding anybody,Stubby brown suit. The guy following us
was shot to death. Yeah whatmovie was that? Oh? I remember
Night must End? Larry played thedetective. He was great. Come on,
give Stubby. You're heading for Larrywhen his room right now? Yeah?
Yeah, that's right, Reagan elevenO nine, I'm heading there eleven.
Oh, never mind, Reagan. You guys have been trying to keep
me from seeing Larry. I knowthat now, no more trick listen Stubby

(25:45):
Larry when his room number isn't Yeah, well for you're in for Regan,
I call HP Love Joy's office.Myself ain't got the number, so don't
handle the Joy gave you Larry's roomnumber. He left the message you want.
The secretaries told me Larry be thereat seven tonight. And that's now,
Reagan, and you ain't stopping mebbylistening. Something's wrong, real wrongs.
Can no more tricks, Reagan,Now get out of my way.
Somebody's pulling tricks hall right, andyou're it. You're really it if you

(26:07):
go up to the eleventh floor.Yeah, what cloth did you steal?
That? Thumb? Reagan? Youaren't stopping me this time. The elevator
door slammed shut before I could turnaround. When I did, there was
a little light above the door clickingoff floor numbers. By the time it
had hit eight, another car wasin front of me. I grabbed him.
It took maybe a minute to makethe eleventh floor, but it seemed
like an hour. Down at theend of the hall, a door was

(26:30):
closing quietly. The number on itsaid eleven or nine. I drew my
gun and ran for it. Ididn't have time to be polite. Stubby.
It there on the floor near theopen window, gasping for breath.
Next to him sit Roer HP,Lovejoy's assistant. My bullet in his arm.
He was going to toss out ofthat open window Stubby eleven flours down

(26:53):
his concrete. That's a lie, now, okay, Stubby, sit found
out about that oil option you've gotin Bakersfield. You say this all under
that land. I checked that awildcatter on the property next to yours brought
in a gusher last week. Whoknows? Maybe you're in He wanted to
keep Lyaring from battling under shut upmy arm breaking if you left a message
with one of love Joy's secretaries werethere. Deliberately sent Stubby to the wrong

(27:15):
room. I need a doctor. You shot brown suit the private off you'd
hired. You know that didn't makesense until I realized it was me you
were after. When he I droppeddown, he didn't you could quit this
talking. You gotta give me toa doctor, sure, said, sure,
I'll get you to a doctor. But he don't count on him.
But you're gonna get he can't cure. Stubby Adair kept his option and said

(27:45):
Ranier went to jail. Thus, the Lion was all smiles when I turned
up at his office the next morning. My boy colveed and coveed. That
means we're friends again, Huff,That's of course we're friends, Jeffrey.
Whatever made you think we were?Oh? Nothing much stuff that you're about

(28:06):
to fire me last night? Oh? Dad, Well that's all change now,
Jeffrey. Everything came out just likeI said it would. What came
out? Why? Why? Thenew movie business? Remember I told you

Winters, Jeffrey, the big starWinters hired us. Yes, Jeffrey,
he wants protection, and not forhimself or a friend. A friend he

Larry Winters goes up to Bakersfield thisafternoon, that means the picture he is
working on, it will be theLane who cares this is business just s
thought she might be interested. ProgressivePictures won't like it, Jeoffrey. If
Larry Winds wants to go to bait, just stuff you want to know,

back. A good episode with alot of twists. It was interesting to
hear the Lion getting upset with Regan, which is an interesting change of pace
given that Regan practically seems to pushthe Lion around and treat him like an

(32:06):
employee. I mean, I havenever thought of calling my supervisor Fats.
Oh. That may be part ofthe reason why I have not lost so
many jobs. But I will sayit is an improvement over the dynamic in
the Jack Web series, where theLion was just constantly browbeating Regan, and

(32:29):
they have a lot of fun intheir relationship. But it's nice to have
an episode where the Lion remembers thathe's the boss and he owns the agency.
Listener comments and feedback. Now andnow we have a comment from Matt
who says I always enjoy Regan. To answer your question on the comment left

Roger has starved. Remarkable how onenever says a hungry rager? Is that
not so? Hunger is the inspector? And even more remarkable is your singular
