Speaker 13 (06:45):
Now here's Jeff.
Speaker 15 (06:56):
Thank you Kevin, and good afternoon America, and welcome to
the Jeff Santo Show. It is great to be with
you on this Monday edition of the program. We welcome
our good friends at AM ten fifty in Sam Bernardino,
Greater Los Angeles for all three hours of the Jeff
Santo Show on casey AA. We thank Mark Westwood and
(07:17):
the great team there in Sam Bernardino for their help
in getting us live on the fantastic signal they have
as well as you know, some really great people who
are involved, you know, trying to do the right thing
to give you radio that connects with you, not just
you know, forcing it down your throat from the right
(07:38):
wing perspective. So we're very excited to be on three
hours Monday through Friday, from twelve to three Pacific time.
Hope you had a good weekend, folks. The Patriots one,
so I'm very excited about that. They now six and two,
I think, so all your Newland Patriot fans out there
listening to us on AM nine eighty WCAP in Boston,
(08:01):
Lowell and southern New Hampshire, Manchester and Nashua where the
signal goes again, shout out to Sampe and company there.
And we are on three to five Monday through Friday,
Eastern time on the Great AM nine eighty.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Also we are.
Speaker 15 (08:21):
Of course on tape delay in both San Francisco and
in Los Angeles. In San Francisco we're on tonight Monday
through Thursday, and we'll be staying on through the election
as well. We're very excited about the opportunity. We'll look
to grow more with ksfo AM eight ten in San
(08:42):
Francisco twice a week in Los Angeles on the fifty
thousand a lot Flamethrower on KABC seven ninety on Tuesdays
at seven and Fridays.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
At eight pm. That will end this week.
Speaker 15 (08:58):
Okay, I've got a couple of things, and we'll be
looking to make more on expansion plans.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
We'll know more by the end of the week.
Speaker 15 (09:05):
By the way, on some East Coast opportunities as well.
You know, we have some really fantastic guests. Last week,
of course, we had on minority whip in the Democratic House,
Catherine Clark. We're looking to have some top leaders from
(09:25):
California this week. We're going to try to get Governor Newsom.
We'll see if that can happen this week or possibly
early next week. So all of that is on the table.
But it's really it's all you folks who call in,
write in, or on TikTok or on Facebook. I don't
get a chance to say hello to all of you,
but we will. We'll point out some really great tweets
(09:48):
and emails. Going forward, maybe it becomes a daily feature,
but at the very least we'll do it on a
weekly basis. So I just wanted to say that because
you guys are really the backbone of what we do
in the great team that we have on the Jeff
Santo Show. All right, so today's show we will have
Gary South. He is the political consultant from California, a
(10:12):
senior advisor for Gray Davis ninety nine to two thousand
and three that elected, of course, in nineteen ninety eight.
He also had advised Gray Davis in three statewide winning elections,
which is pretty impressive as well. Gary will join us
at three thirty Eastern twelve thirty Pacific time. Here on
(10:33):
the Jeff Santo Show. Coming up at four h six,
it's Oarman Mel. He's the outreach director of the Jeff
Santo Show. He's also the DNC member from Massachusetts, formerly
the vice president of the NAACP in Brockton, Massachusetts, one
of the bigger cities for those of you who don't
know Massachusetts. Brockton is the home of Rocky Marciano, the
(10:55):
Great Fighter, as well as Marvin Hagler, another pugilist, and
both of them hail from Brockton, Massachusetts. A great part
of south eastern or southern part of the Massachusetts Eastern Massachusetts. Anyways,
we will be talking to mail at four o six
for the entire hours, so please call in eight three
(11:15):
three five four five five three three three.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
That's eight three three five four five five three three three.
Speaker 15 (11:21):
Then at five o'clock our California team comes into play.
Harold Meyerson grew up in Los Angeles, still a Dodger fan.
Congrats to them on a big wig on Saturday night.
Do I just now play Game three? I think it's Glasgow,
And of course Max Serger wants a Dodger for a
short time too. We'll be performing at Dodger Stadium tonight
(11:43):
was at five o'clock Pacific time at something that. Anyways,
we will be watching as sports fans as you are,
as you know, I am a Red Sox fan.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
You can see it from the hat.
Speaker 15 (11:52):
If you're watching online on the video feed that's of course,
you can go to our website and get linked right
into the vo and that is the very keyword the
Jeff Santos Show dot com. So we'll talk to Harold
Myerson at five o'clock American Prospect Editor at Large and
he will be with us at five o'clock two o'clock
(12:15):
Pacific grew up in Los Angeles and ran the La
Weekly for a long time too, the great magazine. There
was an alternative weekly which we missed so much in
our society today. And then Alan Minsky lived and lives
lives in Los Angeles and runs the as executive director
of the Fantastic Progressive Democrats of America PD America online
(12:38):
and on Twitter, Facebook, I call it Twitter, ex Blue Sky,
et cetera, et cetera PD America and Alan will join
us at five point thirty on audio. So you know,
like I say, I was happy the Patriots one, I
was happy that, you know, Democrats continue to fight. There's
(12:59):
a lot of different elements here of the whole shutdown.
There's a lot of things. But you know, this week
is the week before an election, not only in California
and of course Mandani in New York City. We see
more and more lies coming out of Andrew Cuomo's mouth.
You know, he's really to me persona non grata as
(13:19):
far as I'm concerned. In the Democratic Party. We'll see
what the leaders at the DNC do, But as far
as I'm concerned, he's lost a lot. I was a
big fan of his twenty years ago coming off as
father and late Mario Cuomo. But he's lost credibility in
my book, and I think many others, both in New
York and around the nation. So I'd glat to see
(13:42):
the more people are rallying to Mandani. Of course, last
week the key endorsement from Speaker.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
To be hopefully in a matter of months.
Speaker 15 (13:51):
Keen Jeffries, that's a big endorsement for mister Mandani. Of course,
we've got key races both in Virginia and New Jersey.
We will check in later this week with our good
friend Deb Cornovaca, who's a former chief of staff deputy
chief of staff to the current governor, Governor Phil Murphy
of New Jersey, will get her take.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
On where the race is in the final days that
takes place.
Speaker 15 (14:16):
Again, there's also some regional Pennsylvania Supreme Court judges that
are in the state of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, since
they're a commonwealth too, like Massachusetts. We'll get into that
later in the week with a few of our other consultants,
including Jerry Austin of course was on tomorrow the Great
Ohio political consultant, and we'll see what the Pennsylvania races
(14:43):
will mean, it could be very important not only for
the Keystone state of Pennsylvania, but it's in general for
the country, particularly as you head toward the twenty sixth
election and the twenty eight elections too.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
All Right, so I.
Speaker 15 (14:56):
Want to talk a little bit about because California is
from and center for us on the Jeff Santo Show
and while we're on in San Francisco, La Sam Bernardino.
This is because it affects so many of us in
the other forty nine and I wanted to make that
very clear. California is the big Kahuna, the eight hundred
(15:19):
pound guerrilla. The point is is they could you know,
if they were their own country, they'd be what the
eighth largest economy in the world, something.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Like that, maybe the fifth.
Speaker 15 (15:29):
But they are the leaders and as somebody said, I
think one of our callers, Tom in Los Angeles, Finally, California,
with its size, is showing how important it is to
the rest of the country, their progressive politics, their open
minded views on things, and to me, this is a
(15:50):
great win win for the Democratic Party to have California
front and center.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Okay, maybe they get top four.
Speaker 15 (15:58):
Role in the twenty twenty eight election. That with a
good friend Mail Poindexter coming up later. But here is
the point. We cannot allow the Republicans to continually rig.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Yes, I use that word because.
Speaker 15 (16:14):
The Republicans, you have to understand how they think, they
think and use the wording and they get really slick,
you know, somewhat devious folks on that side who basically
take our words and twist them.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
They're well known for that.
Speaker 15 (16:32):
So what we have to do is, as Gavin Newsom
is saying has been saying, is that we're fighting fire
with fire. So they go into Texas, they tell their
their lapdog governor who should have been impeached long time ago.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Abbot part of the Abbot and Costello.
Speaker 15 (16:48):
I wish it was, but it's true to form, and
a lot of people are getting hurt in Texas because
of that. One of the things that I sense is that,
you know, and the Republicans have no way to go.
They are not a majority party. Yes, they have the
majority in the House and Senate. But when you gerrymander
it and include the fact that you have states in
the western part of the country, and you know, they're
(17:11):
fine people that live in those states, but really, do
you think it's fair that California and the millions of
people that live in California get two senators two.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
And the same thing goes for Idaho.
Speaker 15 (17:26):
I don't know how many people it has, two hundred thousand,
three hundred thousand. It's very small population wise. Geographically it's
not that big either. Montana massive state, but again I
wouldn't say twelve people in it, but not a large amount. So,
you know, we've got to realize here that what you see,
(17:46):
and this is the Republicans totally. You know, you look
at a map on election night and you see a
lot of red because those those states west of the Mississippi,
starting with North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas. And I'm looking
at a map right now of off camera here Nebraska, Oklahoma, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah.
(18:14):
Utah's growing, as is Oklahoma. They both have basketball teams.
But here, here's the point. You look at that all
of us. Oh my god, it's so it's so vastly
in favor of the Republicans. It's a red nation bs
BS because what you're looking at.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Mainstream media likes to put up the pretty pictures.
Speaker 15 (18:36):
By the way, you know, show him video, Remember that
Don Henley's song from the eighties, you know, give him
dirty Laundry.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
We're gonna have to play that sometime.
Speaker 15 (18:43):
Mark that in my to do list, Mister Freddie and Company,
Dirty Laundry by Don Henley, the Great Drummer, of.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Course from the Eagles. I think it's nineteen eighty eight,
eighty nine.
Speaker 15 (18:54):
But anyways, the point is is that what we have
here is a rocks of the Republican Party to sort of,
you know, bamboozle, the great word that of course at
Obama talked about many times in many of his speeches.
You don't want to bamboozle you because that's what they
(19:15):
do when they do it very well. They're great con men.
Trump the ultimate right. So what we need on the
Democratic side is to tell the truth. You can tell
the truth in a number of different ways. You can
say it in a fun way. You can wrap it
if you want. You know, I'm watching too much. Let's
make a deal, you know, with Wayne Brady, not that Brady,
(19:38):
Tom Brady. Wayne Brady does a great job. And you know, however,
you have to communicate it. We want to break it down.
We like to use sports and by the way, coming
up in the next couple of weeks, we're going to
put up on our website, the Jeff Santo Show dot Com,
where you can watch the show right now and you
can also have it on tape delay demand whenever you
(20:00):
want it again right under the top of the website.
I really feel that if you communicate with people where
they are, whether it's sports, whether it's music. And speaking
of music, by the way, we're going to confirm this tonight,
but we believe, we think we have a opportunity for
(20:22):
you to hear a fantastic cover a band of Bruce Springsteen.
I get to see them this summer and they are
scheduled for five o'clock Eastern two o'clock Pacific time. We'll
have the members of the band on the cover band,
not Bruce Springsteen.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I would love to get Bruce and maybe soon, but
let's start with the cover band.
Speaker 15 (20:40):
They're very, very good, and the lead singer is very
very close to what Bruce is on stage commanding performance. Anyways,
the point is is that whether it's music or sports
or however you communicate with folks. You know, again, if
you want to wrap it whatever to me, you have
(21:01):
to be able to fight fire with fire. You need
to be able to tell people what you're for, what
you're against, and where you draw the line. There are people,
you know, with snap benefits being cut off. I was
watching our friends at MSNBC today and you know they
are talking about federal workers. Yes, and that's a whole
(21:23):
another issue. But the benefits that people have would snap,
they're gonna getting cut off. They're getting cut off from
mister Trump and company, a do nothing Congress that is
asleep at the wheel, that is basically a wall. That's right,
if they were in the military, all these guys would
be out of the military and would be fine maybe
in the in the UH in the orange jumpsuit aspect too,
(21:44):
because what they're doing is they're not allowing Grajalva, the
newly elected Arizona rep and the Attorney General of Arizona,
has sued the the you know, House or representatives and
the Republicans for this whole ridiculous stuff because this all
goes to the Epstein stuff. That's why they don't want
(22:05):
to release it, because Miss Grahab will be two hundred
and eighteen once that happens. The Epstein stuff comes out,
and of course it's very embarrassing to Trump. Okay, Now,
if you think about it, folks, the Democrats on economics,
on foreign policy have a lot of ammunition. And that's
(22:27):
a difficult word to use because we're a non violent
show here, but they have a lot of trinkets that
they can play with to push back on Trump and
the Republicans. Again, what have we talked about on this
show the tariffs, the Duncan Donuts tariffs. Again, for those
who are actually watching us on video, and you can
(22:50):
still listen to all of the great radio stations that
we're on again live on Caseyaa in sam Bernardino Metro,
Los Angeles, AM ten fifteen, and you can come over
from there and watch our video on again the Jeff
Santo Show dot Com.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Similarly on WCAPAM nine.
Speaker 15 (23:11):
Eighty, our great station in Lowell, Massachusetts, Boston, and the
two great cities in southern New Hampshire, Manchester and Nashua.
But we bring this up because Duncan Donuts went from
seven dollars to fourteen dollars in one week at one
of the major grocery chains. It's up on all of them,
(23:32):
but more so on this one. Here s an s
So that is a constant reminder, and you put that
in the face of independent voters and some that are
not completely brainwashed by the trumpies, and it wakes them up.
And they said, went from seven to fourteen dollars in
one week, Jeff, yep, and I kept going back and
(23:54):
it's not going down. That is Trump tariff, MANI yeah,
that is something the Democrats should be hitting mister Trump
over the head with. Allowing this to continue to happen.
That is outrageous and that is why we need to
fight back in every way possible again, non violently. All Right,
(24:16):
The phone number to join us a three three five
four five five three three three. Kevin will tell us
we have on the line, and we'll start with our
good friend in the great city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and
that's mister John D.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
John.
Speaker 15 (24:35):
Good afternoon, my friend. How are you today? What's on
your mind? Can John hear us?
Speaker 5 (24:48):
Yes, I can hear you.
Speaker 15 (24:50):
Ah, very good. Well you're on the line. You're on
Live with Jeff said head sir.
Speaker 16 (24:56):
Yeah, yeah. I was going to say, uh, you know,
the Trump tariff is a tax. It's a tax on
you and me ye to pay for you know, a
tax uh you know, write off for billionaires and millionaires
(25:16):
who don't need it.
Speaker 17 (25:18):
Uh.
Speaker 16 (25:18):
And so you you can think of all of these tariffs.
Speaker 5 (25:21):
He's not wheeling and dealing anything.
Speaker 16 (25:24):
He's wheeling and dealing your your your.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
Standard of living, which is going to go down.
Speaker 16 (25:32):
And these other countries are like, okay, well, if you
want to play hardball, we just won't play with you.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
We'll just play with each other, like Canada.
Speaker 16 (25:41):
That's the policy that they're going to take. So you know,
he thinks he's omnipotent, but essentially he is destroying the
very fabric of our economy, our government, you know, and
h and destroying the American way of life. And you know,
(26:03):
I'm sure that people don't realize what they voted in,
but that is exactly that's the factual information. That is
what his policies are doing. And there's nothing that we
can do about it. And here we have a entire
Congress that is redundant, and yet they're getting paid. But
(26:27):
yet government workers are not getting paid. And you know,
somebody didn't just pull out all of these agencies out
of their backside and say, oh yeah, I want to
you know, tax everybody and make people's lives hard. This
is what creates a civilized country, a civilized life. This
is what you know, oils the wheels of democracy and
(26:51):
capitalism and our way of life, and he is destroying
it to hand over to Project twenty twenty five so
that he can make himself richer and them richer. And
you know, he's doing it with a so called popular ideology.
You know, he's claiming the red meat is all the
(27:13):
immigrants in the country who are doing tremendous amounts of work,
the work that people don't want to do all over
this country. And you can just rattle off all the
different industries that they're involved with, and and.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
So he all around.
Speaker 16 (27:32):
It's just he's taking the ship of state and just.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
You know, poking holes in it. So it's going to.
Speaker 16 (27:41):
Drowned and we're going to drowned along with it. And
I don't think that's what people actually motivate.
Speaker 15 (27:50):
Yeah no, but I guess it's it's really important for
people to understand, you know, and I think people in
Minneapolis do.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
It's a very it's a very progressive city.
Speaker 15 (28:01):
Omar has got elected and re elected there despite a
lot of money being thrown up against even by the
Democratic side.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
But I'm wondering.
Speaker 15 (28:09):
You know, if people don't get to people, particularly you know,
and in these in these states that just next to you,
in Wisconsin outside of Madison Milwaukee, which are you know,
very blue parts of the state. You know, you've got
to get them where they are. And that's what I
was trying to say earlier. You know, if you can
get to them from sports, through music, through whatever, just
(28:32):
you know, a smile or your dog put You know
a lot of people who are Republicans own dogs. So
there's a great example right there, you know with your
great dogs.
Speaker 16 (28:42):
Well, the dog food is going to go up, because
that's right, you know, just like everything else. No, Yeah,
the farm economy here is doing. It's in the in
the crapper and it's billions of dollars Wisconsin, Iowa, North Cota,
South Dakota, and most people in farm country here, even
(29:05):
in this you know, format liberal state, in the outstate
areas of.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Minnesota, they voted for Donald Trump.
Speaker 16 (29:15):
You know, there's counties here in Minnesota that went completely
to Donald Trump. And they're the one they're actually going

You've heard him once here on the Jeff Santo Show.
He is a California Democratic strategist. He is also a
former senior advisor to Gray Davis as governor from nineteen
ninety nine to two thousand and three, and of course
he has worked in three winning statewide campaigns for Great Davis.
(34:32):
Great to have Gary south with us, leaning us off
as our first guest today on a big week for
Prop fifty.
Speaker 3 (34:39):

Speaker 15 (34:40):
Great to have you back on the show. I hope
you're doing well and welcome.
Speaker 20 (34:44):
Hey Jeff, it's great to be back on the show.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Great to have you back.
Speaker 20 (34:50):
Short answer, I'm sorry, go ahead, no, no, go ahead.
The short answer on Proposition fifty, which is on the
ballot next two day, is that as the saying goes
it's all over but the shouting. And the best way
we know that is that Gavin Newsom himself this morning
at seven twenty nine am set out an email with
(35:13):
a title that says, you can stop donating now, thank you,
and in the body of the of the email it says,
we have hit our budget goals and raised what we
need in order to pass Proposition fifty. You can stop
donating now. I got to tell you my forty plus
years of running both candidate campaigns and ballot measure campaigns,
(35:34):
I've never in my life seen anything like that message
line at the end of a campaign.
Speaker 15 (35:41):
That is rather rare, say the least, in my short
time in the political world working with our good friend
Jerry Austin, I never saw or heard that, And as
a reporter talk show host never saw it either. Talking
with Gary South here on the Jeff Santos Show, knows
California politics quite well and and you know understands the
(36:02):
part of this.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Now.
Speaker 15 (36:03):
You know the people still have to show up to vote,
and I know you know that, and so we don't
want to depress the vote. So you know a lot
of people are voting early. You can vote by mail
of course in California. So there's a number of people
who have and I think that's good, but we want
to make sure all the way up to the fourth
that people go out to vote.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
And I too, Yeah, But.
Speaker 20 (36:25):
So a couple of additional factors that play into that.
The latest count of mail in ballots has Democrats at
more than one point five million and Republicans at eight
hundred thousand. And in fact, Jeff, Democratic voters have been
sending in balance in this special election had a faster
clip than I did in last year's presidential election, which
(36:48):
is unheard of in and off your special election. So
Democrats are juiced up about this. One other factor that
plays into this between now and next Tuesday is that
ad tracking services have published that the S side has
at least nine million dollars in time reserve between now
next Tuesday on broadcast, TV, cable, and radio, while the
(37:12):
NO side has virtually no time reserved. So the No
side is clearly out of gas for the critical you
know last week of the campaign, and a new CBSU
gov poll that was released just last Thursday showed the
measure at sixty two Yes thirty eight No, which is
the whitest gap i'm aware of in any poll that
has been shown to date. The Emerson poll, Emerson College
(37:36):
poll came out on Sunday, I believe it was or
Saturday night, and among likely voters only. They only polled
likely voters and people who've already voted, and they had
the measure at fifty seven thirty seven. Also the biggest
margin YETE for the S side in the in the
Emerson poll. So fifty is going to pass easily. And
(37:57):
I don't think we're going to have a problem with
turnout Democrats or you step there. They're turning out in
in greater numbers to some degree in the early vote
than they did in the presidential race last year.
Speaker 15 (38:09):
Talking with Gary South here on the Jeff Santo Show again,
political strategist California Base again, senior advisor to Governor Gray
Davis from nineteen ninety nine to two thousand and three.
We'll take your phone calls for Gary coming up at
eight three three five four five five three three three.
That's a three three five four five spells out, Jeff,
(38:29):
J E.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
F F no COFs allowed.
Speaker 15 (38:32):
Well, let me talk to you about this, Gary, because
you mentioned something and again I know from your days
as a consultant. You're very happy about talking about how
good we're doing. But my role as an advocate here
is to keep people interested. I got to do my
show five days a week, and the pat fact is
we want people to come out and vote.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
So I just want to be clear on that.
Speaker 15 (38:55):
So let me just say that, I mean incredibly impressed
with the Gavin Newsom operation, incredibly impressed with you know,
grassroots Democrats in California coming out on this. This is
our democracy which is at stake, And as I was
trying to.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Say, uh.
Speaker 15 (39:14):
During the lead up my commentary earlier, is that this
is important for people not just in California, but for
the forty nine. If you consider and I think you
know this is going to be now the importance of
the DNC and other folks to sort of wrap their
arms around this. It's going to be hopefully a lot
(39:36):
of positive news for Democrats coming out of November fourth.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
I'm Donnie in New York City.
Speaker 15 (39:41):
Hopefully it wins in both New Jersey governor and Virginia governor.
Maybe some wins in the Pennsylvania Supreme Courts seats too.
But I think it's really important to say that you know,
we understand, and Gavin Newsome understands. He does not have to,
you know, lay it on too much, mister Martin and company.
Though I'm a supporter of Gavin Newsom, they have said
(40:02):
said that. But he could say Martin, that is that
he has led us in the fight. And you can
also say other others Pritzker, et cetera, Bernie Sanders so forth.
But the fact is is that what is happening in
California again from Martin's words, from his mouth, this is
(40:23):
important for the other for the United States because of ABCD,
and we need to stop what Trump has been doing.
And that was the first you know, if you want
the first battle, if you might against the Trump Republicans,
if you were advising Martin and the DNC and other
governors for that matter, wouldn't you say, look, you know,
(40:48):
presumably everything goes well and there's no miracle disaster next Tuesday.
This to me has to be followed up by this
is the game plan. This is the blue This is
the roadmap to defeating Trump in twenty six in the
House and Senate, and again in twenty eight and hopefully
he'll be long gone and maybe leave the country before then.
Speaker 20 (41:11):
I can only hope, one can only.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
Hope yes exactly.
Speaker 20 (41:15):
To the country without an extra extradition treaty.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
Right, yes, Well, you know, one bit.
Speaker 20 (41:24):
Of good news if you're talking about the fifty states.
And there's a reason, by the way, why this is
prop fifty. It could have taken any number. But part
of the symbolic reasoning of attaching the number fifty to
it is because it does affect all fifty states. Now,
one good bit of good news that I will report
is the Quinnipiac poll last week came out with the
(41:49):
generic ballot, which means they just ask people, as you know, Jeff,
you know, if the election were held today, would you
vote for a Democrat for Congress or for a Republican
for Congress? Right, that particular poll came out, fifty percent
said they would vote for a Democrat and forty one
percent for a Republican. That is a hugely wide lead
(42:11):
at this point in any campaign. And by the way,
Quinnipiac turned out to be very accurate in the In
the twenty and eighteen midterm election, with Trump in the
White House, it was only about a five to six
point spread between Democrats and Republicans. But Democrats picked up
(42:33):
forty one seats. They were also extremely accurate in twenty
twenty two when Biden was in office and Democrats actually
lost nine seats and lost the House. So they can't
you can't ever depend upon these things playing out at
the end. But Quinnipiac has had a real historic record
(42:53):
of accuracy in terms of predicting what happens in these
in these congressional elections based on the generic ballot. And
my own sense of it is, I think this is
moving so heavily against Republicans that I'm not sure it
matters whether they pick up a seat here or a
seat in Indiana or a seat in Missouri or Kansas.
I think this is going to be a wave of
(43:14):
election that's going to wipe them out.
Speaker 3 (43:16):
And agree, Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 15 (43:18):
And and as we're talking to here with Gary South
here on the Jeff Santo Show again the phone number
to join us eight three to three five four five
five three three three, I think this presents an opportunity
for Democrats to be bold in there and their ideas,
big ideas, and not just sort of play along the edges.
You may disagree, but the way I see this is
(43:40):
that if you push an agenda, now, you know, I
mean I think back to FDR, who I think should
be the model for Democrats going forward again, most successful
Democratic president you know from the twentieth century on. Again,
I don't include Jefferson because of the slave stuff, but
if you look at it, you know, he laid the
foundation for what good government should be. And the Democrats
(44:03):
should run on good government. Not as boring as that's
his sound. But the point is is that you know,
they have your back on healthcare, on education, on the military,
va all these things that are created in most part
by Democrats. And of course LBJ did a lot himself
before Vietnam sunk him and sunk the country really with medicare, medicaid,
(44:25):
voting rights, civil rights, etc. And I think that, you know,
Democrats have to be bold. They don't necessarily have to
enact everything in six months in twenty twenty nine or
stop everything, you know, in twenty twenty seven, but they
have to be reaching bold because as FDR found out,
when he tried to, you know, get the Supreme Court
(44:48):
to bend his way, to expand it and so forth,
he didn't get that. But what he did is he
get to soften that that time the Supreme Court, and
I think, you know, if you go hard and be bold,
you can then get something at the end, even if
you don't achieve all your immediate goals.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
Your thoughts on that, well, I agree.
Speaker 20 (45:10):
I generally agree with that, Jeff, although I would say
that we have to be a little bit circumspect in
that we probably do not take the Senate back. I mean,
there's an outside chance numerically that we can if we
flip a couple of seats in what are now traditionally
red states, but we may not have the Senate back,
so we may not have the ability as we did
(45:33):
under the first two years of Obama to move massive legislation.
And I think that if with Democrats take back the House,
which I believe they will, and I think it will
be a very workable margin, it's not going to be
two or three votes in my sense. In my view,
they're going to have to spend two years doing several things,
(45:55):
but one of them is they need to get the
investigative machine cranked up to look into all of these
outrageous things that Trump has done and that people who
work for him have done over the What will then
have been the last two years, and that machinery obviously
has been shut down by by Speaker Johnson, and the
(46:19):
Democrats are going to have to reactivate it because they
have investigative power, they have subpoena power, and in the
lead up to the two thousand and eight twenty twenty
eight presidential election, Trump clearly cannot run again, but there
will be a Republican candidate for sure, and they need
to make sure that voters by twenty twenty eight understand
(46:40):
the damage that Trump has caused and the illegal things
that he has done that are count to both the
Constitution and the law. So they're going to have they'll
have a dual purpose. I mean they should, they should
pass legislation for sure. And I do think that the
Democrats focusing on healthcare is a very smart move. I mean, basically,
(47:05):
generically people tend to look at Democrats as being more
I don't know, patient friendly, I guess you would say
on the healthcare issue, partly because of you know, Medicare
and Medicaid and all the other national policies that have
been passed and spearheaded by Democrats. So I think that's smart.
(47:25):
But we can't get overwrought here in terms of passing
legislation because we may not have the Senate, and obviously
we don't have the presidency until you know, theoretically January
of twenty twenty nine, and won't have a president in
the White House to sign legislation even if we got
to pass.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
So I have a little I completely understand.
Speaker 15 (47:49):
What I was aiming at, Gary, was that running on
the twenty twenty six is that I want to be
bold enough, not just you know, on Trump, but thinking
that you know, we have a game plan that cannot
get enacted because of the veto of President Trump more
than likely unless he's impeached, and then maybe if Vance
(48:12):
is the vice president that's the case.
Speaker 3 (48:13):
Now, do you agree that because of what.
Speaker 15 (48:17):
We're seeing in the polls generically that in a state
like North Carolina where the incumbent, where the former Governor
Cooper is running against not an incumbent Republican, they have
a chance there. They may have a chance in the
state that seemingly is going to the middle, that was
very red in Iowa, And of course there's the main
(48:38):
situation with a Platner, who's ahead of Collins in this poll.
The last Ichuck by about fifteen points and then get
a take over the primary and the incumbent governor who's
not very popular and Mills. So you know, there are
some pickups here, even if it's only by one, so
you could do something.
Speaker 20 (48:59):
Yet I took up North Carolina.
Speaker 21 (49:01):
I do.
Speaker 20 (49:01):
I mean, I think that that Cooper is a great candidate.
Was elected governor twice. I think he's a great candidate,
and I think we have a great chance in Maine
against Susan Collins, who's one of the biggest wisses in
the Senate, as you well know, talks a good game,
talks a good game, and she's always concerned and worried
(49:22):
about this and concerned, worried and then basically vote votes
the party line. I mean, she's made she's made a
joke out of the word concerned.
Speaker 15 (49:32):
It's just a Saturay Night Live, I tell you, just
it's just unbelievable.
Speaker 20 (49:38):
Totally. Yes, But I do think that that the the
the emphasis on healthcare and and the cuts to to
Medicaid and to covered to uh you know, the A
C A that that the Republican Congress has voted. I
think that is a great issue for Democrats to to
(49:59):
really wrap their arms around and run with in twenty
twenty six, because again just generically, you know, Democrats are
kind of generically viewed favorably on certain issues like the environment,
and Republicans are viewed favorably on other issues like crime
and punishment, law enforcement, that sort of thing, probably immigration.
(50:22):
So we have to go with our strengths. And I
do think that the whole play on healthcare is a
great issue for Democrats.
Speaker 15 (50:31):
I'm glad you mentioned that. We're going to take a
call from John and Minnesota in a second. But you know,
one of the things that to me separates Gavin Newsom
from a lot of other Democrats, particularly over the last
I don't know, ten years or so in a national level,
is the toughness of Gavin Newsom. You know, I mean,
you can't see my face right now, but you know
(50:52):
I'm pointing at the camera and saying, you know, not
on my watch, Donald Trump. You know, I'm going to
go right after you, to go right after you on
your platforms with Fox and so forth. And the reason
why I mentioned that, and I think it should be
emulated by other Democrats is the fact that, you know,
Democrats have been the so called mommy Party. I remember
in the nineteen nineties working for Jerry's firm, Austin Schinkoff
(51:17):
and so forth, and you know, looking at some polling
numbers and the Clinton people, you know, talking about soccer moms.
We got to get women to come out to vote
and so on and so forth, and they kind of
let and I think somewhat NAFTA and their agreements with
Nick Ingrich and so forth really kind of I think
hurt them in blue collar America and Iowa.
Speaker 3 (51:36):
And Ohio and places like that as an example.
Speaker 15 (51:40):
And I think the fighting back a strong male presence
actually is an important thing. Not that you want to
be strong and mean, which is what you have with
the Donald Trump and full lies. But you know, I believe,
I believe that you know, there's strong and wrong, will
be weak and right, and sometimes we've been weak and
(52:00):
right on a lot of issues, and you can.
Speaker 3 (52:03):
Be strong and right.
Speaker 15 (52:04):
And I think that that's the that's the Royal flush,
you know, that's four races or whatever you want to
use card games. I don't play cards, yeah, but the
point is is that, right, that's what I think we need. Yes, exactly,
I spend more time.
Speaker 20 (52:18):
You know, I agree with you, and I have to
tell you. You know, I ran Newsom's first campaign for
governor in two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine
before he dropped out of the race after fifteen months.
And so I know him well and I've seen him
evolve and develop as a politician since he was mayor
of San Francisco. What's ironic about him is that one
(52:43):
of the Republican criticisms of him is that he's he's
a pretty boy, he's too slick, he's you know, he's
got to uses hair, jail, I mean, all the all
the things they try to throw out him to try to,
I don't know, in a sense kind of feminize the guy.
Speaker 4 (52:58):
Right.
Speaker 20 (52:59):
So, so, who's the Democrat who comes out of the
out of the out of the woodwork and becomes the
toughest opponent and the and the and the toughest antagonist
to Donald Trump. But but but him. And one of
the things that I think, you know what, he has
an advantage here, particularly on the redistricting issue, because his
(53:21):
state is the biggest state we have fifty two members
of Congress, bigger than any other state by far. And
so you know, even if Illinois undertook a redistricting where
they pick up a seat or two here or there,
or I guess Virginia is looking at it potentially. But
we're going to flip five seats here. That is more
(53:41):
than is going to flip in any other state, even
if we take the House back. And so just the
mere size of the of his state and the size
of our congressional delegation will make this particular redistricting effort,
and it's going to pass, as I indicated, will make
this particular redistrict effort a huge national asset for us
(54:03):
and taking back taking back the House and Democrats nationally,
and I agree with you. We we did become too
much the Mommi Party. And I I, you know, I
think that that the emphasis on you know, equality and
feminism and all the things that Democrats stand for, I
think is all all of that is laudable. But you
cannot project to the to the American electorate a a
(54:28):
woosy kind of profile, because people wants someone who is strong,
and they want someone who can who can fight, and
who can articulate things in very in very you know,
powerful terms, and that's what Newsom has turned into. I mean,
I think this thing is going to overwhelmingly pass and
it's going to make him a national political hero among Democrats.
Speaker 15 (54:51):
Yeah, you know, I want to get John in here,
but I do want to ask you before we roll.
You know, both the Harris and Newsome sort of projected
that they're going to be running for president or at
least looking at it series consideration, YadA, YadA, you know
what I mean. So that's going to be interesting. But
let's go to John first has been on hold. You're
next with Gary South political strategies California worked for Governor
(55:12):
Gray Davis as senior advisor from ninety nine to two
thousand and three. We need to correct that, by the way,
Kevin on the on the Chiron, John d You're next
with Gary South.
Speaker 5 (55:23):
Go ahead, sir, h Yeah, I wanted to.
Speaker 16 (55:27):
I sure hope that you know we we you know,
have a landslide election because they are strategizing the other
party about how they can scam the election and suppress
the vote by you know, various districts in Illinois.
Speaker 5 (55:46):
No, not in Illinois, in Indiana and I think Ohio.
Speaker 16 (55:50):
So any state that you know is very read.
Speaker 5 (55:56):
You're going to.
Speaker 16 (55:56):
See that though, But the poll seem to indicate that
there's a lot of uh, you know, favorability for the
Democrats at this point. I'm just concerned that, well, you
know that he doesn't declare martial law and just ignore
(56:17):
the court. Yes, psychopath you know, like they do in
in you know, Africa or even in South America. You know,
residente for life, that kind of thing. He seems to
think that well he can get away with that and
(56:38):
his administration things that especially.
Speaker 5 (56:41):
But yeah, I want investigations. I want them to gum
up the work.
Speaker 16 (56:45):
I'd like them to bring out the Epstein thing. I mean,
I'm going for the juggular.
Speaker 5 (56:51):
I'm I agree, John, happy with anything.
Speaker 3 (56:54):
I want to get Gary on this. I'm with you, man.
I know Gary is to Gary.
Speaker 20 (57:00):
Democratic House. And I said this earlier, the Democratic controlled
House has to activate all the investigative machinery that the
House has as its disposal in order to dig into
some of these things that have been going on, including
Trump making money off the White House and all the
(57:23):
other things that we've seen, all the outrageous things that
we've seen that he's done that are unprecedented for a
US president. So again, as I said earlier, a democratically
controlled House and I think we will have one is
going to have to not just look at legislation which
will set us up for the twenty twenty eight presidential
election in terms of explaining to voters what Democrats stand
(57:46):
for and what we care about and what we're willing
to push for. But they are the most important thing
I think they're going to be able to do in
two years is really expose all of the criminal activity
and the inappropriate activity that the Donald Trump and his
administration have have engaged in, including, by the way, releasing
(58:06):
the Epstein files.
Speaker 15 (58:09):
Yes, that's that's that's number one, and that hopefully will
happen soon. We'll see if that can happen this year.
Speaker 3 (58:16):
Thank you, John.
Speaker 15 (58:17):
Okay, quickly, what do you make Gavin Newsom? I mean,
I think he is by far the best chance the
Democrats have at this moment in time.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
You know, things can change in six months, right, But.
Speaker 15 (58:34):
You know both of them made some announcements, interestingly enough,
within forty eight hours of each other, both California state
wide office holders of the past and Harris being senator.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
Of course, what do you make of that? We got
about a minute your thoughts.
Speaker 20 (58:49):
Well, I don't want to be too harsh with Kamala Harris.
But what I can tell you is I've been around
presidential politics on the Democratic side since the nineteen seventies.
Democrats tend to put losing candidates in the rearview mirror
very quickly.
Speaker 3 (59:04):
I agree.
Speaker 20 (59:05):
I mean, God, God bless Kamala Harris. But she lost
the popular vote. For Christ's sake, she didn't just lose
the presidentc she lost the popular vote for the first
time since two thousand and four as a Democratic nominee.
Speaker 15 (59:18):
Now it was Hillary Clinton and Al Gore won the
popular vote, and we're closer in the race, and they
decided not to run in four and in twenty.
Speaker 20 (59:27):
Twenty correct, correct, We simply do not renominate failed candidates.
And with you, sir, if she wants to run, she
can run.
Speaker 15 (59:37):
From a very difficult position at a very late time.
But that was you know, that's.
Speaker 20 (59:42):
Like Michael Jaccus deciding to run again in nineteen ninety two.
Speaker 19 (59:46):
Right, that's mine to do.
Speaker 15 (59:48):
Tacus, well, thank you, Gary, always great well check hopefully
very soon, maybe on a weekly basis, if we can
work out your schedule.
Speaker 20 (59:57):
Thank you, my friend, be happy to It's always great
to be with you.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):

President Trump is once again talking about sending National guardsmen
(01:00:59):
in San Francisco. He was asked about it aboard Air
Force One bit.
Speaker 2 (01:01:03):
I'd like to do it, but you know, I have
a lot of very important people that are really into
San Francisco that aren't really trying.
Speaker 3 (01:01:11):
To do it themselves.

President Trump is in Japan today and later on tonight

Speaker 4 (01:01:38):
I think it's it was only predictable in a matter
of time, and if you look at the scale of
the number of professional athletes today and how big sports
gambling has become, it was just a matter of time.
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
Last week, FBI Director Cash Betel announced investigators uncovered an

It is our two of the Jeff.
Speaker 15 (01:06:56):
Ant Show, and welcome to folks, coming to you live
from the South coast here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
We're gonna travel a little bit north to talk to
our next guest. He is the outreach director of the
Jeff Santo Show. He is the d NC member from
the Great Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He's formerly the vice president
(01:07:20):
of the NAACP. Brockton mass And for those of you,
as I said in the opening, Brockton mass is the
home of great pugilists, great fighters. I think Rocky Marciano, Marvelous,
Marvin Hagler, and at a third one although he doesn't
fight with his fists, but he's a great fighter for
the Democrats and a great fighter for progresses and he
(01:07:42):
is our friend, mister Mel Poindexter, he joins us via
video from somewhere in Boston.
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
Hello, mister Poyd Dexter, How are you happy? MELMOEA Jeff,
how are you?
Speaker 23 (01:07:53):
And yes, I'm definitely a fighter, and you know, as
we all are fighting for as many Democrats as we
can because we're dealing with some rough times now, I.
Speaker 15 (01:08:05):
Mean we really are, We certainly are, and there's so
much to talk about. We just spoke to Gary South
that gave us some perspective in California. Looking good there,
but we need to still keep the pressure on and
make sure everybody gets a chance to go and vote
and the course to vote correctly. There's intimidation factors by
Donald Trump that is a very big piece of the puzzle.
Speaker 3 (01:08:28):
So there are a number of issues here that we
need to get to.
Speaker 15 (01:08:31):
Mel, and I guess we'll start in the importance again,
we've talked about this before, that with the DNC is
looking at with I think the powerful messaging of Gavin Newsom,
and we'll get into late if we have some time
on his potentially announcement for twenty twenty eight and Kamala
(01:08:55):
Harris as well. But I'm all in on Gavin Newsom
and have been a fan for a while, as you know.
But I think that people have to realize.
Speaker 3 (01:09:08):
And in Gary South, who was Great Davis's senior advisor
as governor from ninety nine to two thousand and three
and worked a lot of statewide races in California, has said,
you know, the fact that Democrats can add these five seats,
you know, it's it's really an impactful situation that helps
(01:09:30):
you and our friends Ken Martin at the DNC and
other Democratic leaders writ large.
Speaker 15 (01:09:37):
And of course it helps our friends. We talked to
Catherine Clark last week from Massachusetts. Of course number two,
the minority whip. It helps her, and and Akeem Jeffries,
who did the right thing by backing Mandani the other day.
And by the way, and you know, so things are
coming together and if we have a super duper Tuesday
(01:09:58):
come on the fourth, and I think things are going
well for the Democrats.
Speaker 3 (01:10:02):
Your thoughts, well, I mean, you're right. Think about it.
Speaker 23 (01:10:07):
Right now, we are dealing with a you know, federal
employees that are have been you know, put out of work.
We've got a government shut down, we have a president
who is for all intensive purposes hijack you know, the
(01:10:27):
country and the government. They in turn, because of the
things that he's done.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
What did he do?
Speaker 23 (01:10:34):
He turned around and he went to you know, his friend,
you know, the governor of Texas and said, Okay, I
need you to do for me what others I've tried
to get others to do. I need you to get
me some seats so that so that the Democrats don't
turn things around and make, you know, and right the
wrongs that I'm doing. So you've got to fight back.
(01:11:00):
So when Governor Newsom said I'm not going to sit
by and watch it happen and put forth, you know,
motivated the conversation around Prop fifty, That in turn showed
the Republicans that we're not just going to stand out
ofly by and let them do this. Those seats, you're correct,
those seats allow us to fight back. Those seats empower
(01:11:22):
us to start turn cleaning up a lot of this mess.
Hopefully with those seats we can put people back to
work for many people out there who don't know across
the country, you heard that programs like Snap, which is
a program that feeds you know, needy families.
Speaker 3 (01:11:42):
Okay, you have a president who has.
Speaker 23 (01:11:48):
Adversely came out and said I'm going to stop the
funding for it. Democrats can then turn around and put
those programs back into place.
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
As I said, put government workers back to work.
Speaker 23 (01:11:59):
Open the government, put people, you know, put the government
back on track so that they can start you know,
putting in terms of veterans programs and things like that,
you know, putting people back to work. That's what these
that's what these seats represent. These seats represent not just
in helping us in the Democratic Party, not just helping
(01:12:22):
the members of the House and in the Senate, but
it also helps Americans because it gives you your government back.
And that's what this is about. This is about us
fighting to get our government back.
Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 15 (01:12:38):
Talking to the great mail point extra here on the
Jeff santo Show, and that is not an understatement. He
is a true fighter and you can see and hear
the passion here on the Jeff Santio Show.
Speaker 3 (01:12:54):
Again, this is our first hour, we're on live.
Speaker 15 (01:12:57):
First day, We're on live for all three hours in
Southern California and KCAA.
Speaker 3 (01:13:03):
It's fantastic to be on three full hours.
Speaker 15 (01:13:06):
We appreciate Mark and the team there, Ark westwooding the
team in sam Bernardino to do that. And again we
want to hear from you too, if you are in
sam Bernardino, if you are in the southern part of California,
Long Beach, Anaheim, we want to hear from you at.
Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
Eight three three five four five five three three three.
Speaker 15 (01:13:25):
If it helps you to remember my first name with
the J E F F no golf's allowed. Eight three
three five four five five three three three, go ahead
and give us a shout. We'd love to hear from
you on this first day of three hours. We'll look
forward to doing this for a long time to come.
(01:13:46):
I also think that it is important Mel to understand
that the fighting image and again we're.
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
Talking with Gary South about this political strategist and you
know we have to be and how many times have
we talked about this on the air off the year A, Mel,
you gotta be strong and right.
Speaker 15 (01:14:09):
We have been outmaneuvered by the right wing BS artists,
mostly this con man by being.
Speaker 23 (01:14:17):
Strong and wrong.
Speaker 3 (01:14:18):
You know he is us strong. Yes, yeah, I'm gonna
hit your look, go go go.
Speaker 15 (01:14:23):
But he's completely devastated the country, as you just pointed out,
and we have to be strong, as Gavin Newsom has
shown us.
Speaker 3 (01:14:33):
You know, not on my watch. You're not gonna come
to my state and play this game.
Speaker 15 (01:14:38):
And that is the attitude that many Democrats, every one
of them running statewide and in Congress, have to have
the same thing. You don't have to be mean spirited
about it. You don't have to be, you know, completely
off the rocker.
Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
You know, you could be just just as I did it.
And he can smile at the end of it too,
you know, speaker that very well.
Speaker 15 (01:15:00):
And you know you can say, don't mess with me
because that's like I know what the score is and
you're gonna end up being shut out.
Speaker 3 (01:15:10):
So that's right, get off my lawn exactly.
Speaker 23 (01:15:14):
And that's what it is. I mean, here's what this is.
What lets you know that we're on the right track.
What's the first thing that the occupant of the White
House did as soon as he and let me tell you,
his people are telling him they're looking at the numbers.
This Prop fifty is about to become go into law.
What's the first thing he does? I'm gonna send the
(01:15:36):
DOJ into intimidate to try to try to browbeat people
into not supporting it. Why because he knows. And this
becomes the people in California vote for this and make
it law. This is what ends up happening. It becomes
the example across the country. You see what's happening in
(01:15:57):
North Carolina. They're trying to do the exact same thing there.
They've been in part of this conversation and they're looking
at what happens in California and they're saying, hey, work's there.
We're gonna put it here, and you're right not on
my lawn, Get off my lawn. You're not taking my country,
and we're gonna fight back. So that lets you know
that we're making progress, because now he's talking about intimidation,
(01:16:22):
and that lets you know you're on the right track.
When they start talking intimidation, that means you got me,
you're gonna probably be successful. And I've got to do
whatever I can to shut this down. That's why we
have to be committed, we have to be consistent, and
we have to We'll go just as hard as you do.
If you wanna go down and try to take people's
(01:16:44):
rights away. We're gonna fight equally as hard to fight.
Speaker 15 (01:16:47):
For those rights right, and we'll do it peacefully and
in the court system. If they're still exactly.
Speaker 23 (01:16:54):
What happened last last weekend, you had no King's Rally
across the country.
Speaker 3 (01:17:01):
Very strong.
Speaker 23 (01:17:03):
Exactly seven million people came together across the country in unison,
no problems, but their voices were heard, and you knew
that I don't have to, you know, do anything violently
when I'm in the right. I know I'm in the right,
the people know I'm in the right, and I don't
have to do anything violent to get that message across.
Speaker 15 (01:17:28):
Well, said No Poindexter here on the Jeff Santo Show again.
The phone number to join us eight three three five
four five five three three three. We will be on
tape tonight in San Francisco on KSFO A M A ten.
It's a very powerful signal, folks. If you live in California,
you may be able to listen to it in you know,
(01:17:50):
pretty much all sectors. The signal goes to Reno, Nevada,
to the east, and of course south to Santa Barbara,
but it may sneak in along the coast and southern California,
and we're very very happy about that. And those who
are in San Francisco may very well be hearing tomorrow
(01:18:10):
night the vocal tones of mel Poindexter, at least half
of them as well.
Speaker 3 (01:18:17):
Let me ask you this, do you sense that.
Speaker 24 (01:18:23):
You know?
Speaker 15 (01:18:24):
I think that there are a lot of issues surrounding
those in Washington, d C. Now and the majority of
people that I talk to, I think, with the exception
maybe of Harold Myerson, who is based in Washington for
The American Prospect, which really doesn't have the Washington Thinking
as a very progressive magazine.
Speaker 3 (01:18:46):
Most of my guests are from outside of d C.
Speaker 15 (01:18:49):
And I just think that the Democrats in Washington really
have to rely And this is another you know, check
mark for Gavin Newsom on their governors and their leaders
who are based outside of Washington.
Speaker 3 (01:19:04):
I think this is important.
Speaker 15 (01:19:05):
I'm not saying that people like Bernie Sanders and AOC
and and and Senator Murphy and Connecticut they don't get it,
that some do, but I think overall, you can't be
dependent upon DC based consultants.
Speaker 3 (01:19:17):
Number One. Number two this this idea that everything is
related to what Trump says, So you gotta answer what
Trump says, Oh my god, you know, and we've got
to tell Boddy what's going on. And the networks do
this too, by the way.
Speaker 15 (01:19:29):
Oh you gotta see Trump walking through to the to
the to the japan Foreign Minister or the Prime minister.
Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
And you know all this stuff. And you know, I mean,
I don't want to see this. I want I want.
Speaker 15 (01:19:41):
Democrats to be talking about their issues, responding to Trump, yes,
and with an affirmative plan. Your thoughts on this, because
I know these are debates that go on at the
d n C level in and out of Washington, d
C and so forth. But to me, that's an important
part because you can't just be uh, you know the
football analogy, read and react, you know, the linebacker read
(01:20:05):
the play and then you react.
Speaker 3 (01:20:06):
And tackle him. You gotta be better.
Speaker 15 (01:20:09):
You gotta be thinking three thousand feet here, you know.
And that's that's the difference. I believe your thoughts.
Speaker 23 (01:20:17):
That's why I mean, when we started they this twenty
twenty five organizing effort across the country, we made sure
that the d n C, the d tripleC, the d SCC,
the Democratic governors across the country, as well as the
state parties we're all in unison talking together because it's
(01:20:40):
not just one You're right, That's why we're depending on
our governors. Because our governors are on the ground. Each
state has an interesting, intricate part of this plan. They
each bring their own unique perspective and that's why it's
not this is not a conversation that comes up out
of Washington, d C. This is a conversation that comes
(01:21:03):
from a coordinated effort across the country with each each
part of that alliance. You know again, DNC, US D
Triple C, Congressional of the House, DSCC, the the Senate,
and the governors all creating the strategy as the annalgy
you just use. As they're sitting in that huddle and
(01:21:25):
the quarterback is mapping out his plan the defensive line,
that's us where the DNC. You know, you got to
make sure that you're running backs know where they're going
and how they're gonna get there. That's that's the governors.
They're the ones who Okay, you're the guys who are
out there, and you know as you're making them making
your way across the field, you know the best way
(01:21:47):
to get there. And that's the reason why as you
point out we're all we're all working together. And this
what we've done in terms of this organizing effort is
make sure that the four of us are constantly in communication.
We're working on the same strategy, we're talking the same lengths.
We're talking to the people on the ground. You know
(01:22:08):
that no kings rallied. You know seven million people. Each governor,
each Democratic governor was making sure they had people on
the ground talking to those people, talking to those those
people are out there rallying and expressing their discontent what's
going on, but then asking them what is it that
we can do. What do you want your Democratic Party
(01:22:31):
to do for you? What message do you want to give?
What issues are important to you?
Speaker 3 (01:22:37):
And that's why.
Speaker 23 (01:22:38):
And we come back together, each one of us saying,
this is what we learned, and this is what we
need to implement and identify our goal star members, those
players who really can get things done and elevate them
so they can get the.
Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
Ball across the goal line. Amen. And you got to
spike that ball too.
Speaker 15 (01:23:00):
And you know there's no reason not to to do
with the dance and the white shoes, Billy white shoes
Johnson did when you and I were very young men.
I love that still do talking with mel Poindexter here
on the Jeff Santo Show.
Speaker 3 (01:23:14):
You can look it up.
Speaker 15 (01:23:15):
Gen Z Houston Oilers, Euston Oilers number one was their
theme song.
Speaker 3 (01:23:20):
Very very cool uniform.
Speaker 15 (01:23:22):
By the way, even though they representing big oil, the
fact is to now the Tennessee Titans, they moved around
and changed their name.
Speaker 3 (01:23:31):
Anyways, as we digress, I.
Speaker 15 (01:23:34):
Must tell you I'm also, you know, very impressed with
you know, how Democrats have stood tall on the economic issues.
Speaker 3 (01:23:48):
And you know there are some members of the House
who get this.
Speaker 15 (01:23:51):
Of course, our good friends Bertie Sanders and AOC have
been talking about this to the oligar key issues and
so on. But you know, as we have been, and
I'll bring the next segment the Dunkin Donuts coffee situation
that went to SNS. As you and well know, not
the great Cambridge coffee shop, but the chain food chain
(01:24:15):
in Massachusetts and other parts of the Northeast.
Speaker 3 (01:24:18):
When from.
Speaker 15 (01:24:20):
Seven dollars in mid September to fourteen dollars that is
chruck tariff that needs to be space every day, every mail.
No Democrats should be left behind, and no Democrats should
not talk about something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:24:37):
I told our good friend Ms.
Speaker 15 (01:24:40):
Clark, our great minority whip from eastern Massachusetts, a congresswoman.
Speaker 3 (01:24:46):
I said, use it please, you can take it, and
you're right.
Speaker 23 (01:24:52):
You're right, because that's one of the things that we're
making sure that people understand. This is what this is
what the those insane tariffs are doing to our everyday
way of life. What you paid for last week with
seven dollars is now fourteen dollars, and you have only
(01:25:13):
him to blame, okay, because this is all his madness. Okay,
he's running this country into the ground simply because of
his insane ideas. He is not taking in consideration the
people who have to live with this, the people who
have to go to work every day, the people have
(01:25:34):
to who are going into those coffee shops and they're saying.
Speaker 3 (01:25:37):
Hey, wait a minute.
Speaker 25 (01:25:38):
When I came in here last week, it was seven dollars.
Now you tell him I'm got to pay fourteen. And
it's not the fault of that the shop, it's the
person sitting crossing. It's not us, it's him. Because of
what he's done.
Speaker 23 (01:25:51):
Now we have to carry the burden, and unfortunately that
carries on to you. Democrats are making sure that people
know that. I can promise you where those are the
things we're leting people. Remember it's the old saying, remember
your anger, because that anger is important come election day.
Remember the people who are who have done this to you,
(01:26:13):
and remember the people who are advocating for you. And
that's us, that's me, that's you, That's the Democrats in
the House and the Senate, as the governors, as the
state parties, all of us working together to try to
get that message out there. We are out here fighting
for you.
Speaker 15 (01:26:34):
That's why you gotta love No point Dexter again, the
DNC member representing Massachusetts, formerly the Brockton vice president of
the NAACP, has also been an important factor in the
urban league here.
Speaker 3 (01:26:50):
In Massachusetts and beyond.
Speaker 15 (01:26:53):
And as I said, folks will bring up I could
reach over and grab the dunkin Donuts which is on
the floor, but I don't think we want to go
through me falling off the chairs. So hold on to
that until the break that we have coming up in
about three minutes or so. Let me just ask you
before we do go to break, though, mel I think
that if the Democrats stay consistent over these next twelve
(01:27:17):
months and a half, you know, we're almost in November. Then,
I think if you stay on the economic issues and
really fly you know, on a direct pathway, I think
the Democrats will do very well.
Speaker 3 (01:27:34):
Again.
Speaker 15 (01:27:35):
Our friend Gary South, who you know, all the polls
and all that kind of stuff as a consultant and
friend with Jerry Austin. Similarly, and David Paaliologus has talked
about this too, a great polster from here in Massachusetts.
You know, Democrats ninety nine times out of out of
one hundred will win when it sticks to economic issues.
(01:27:56):
We get you know, off track, sometimes off the cliff
when we start getting into the social issues because the
Republicans want you to debate it. You know, I mean,
it's a human right if you are trands, it's a
human right if you are you know, subjected to you know,
(01:28:17):
outrageous attacks verbally physically, you know, as a as a
as gay men.
Speaker 3 (01:28:22):
And gay women have for many years now.
Speaker 15 (01:28:25):
Just think of it that way, and you just answer
it that way, and this is, well, how would you
like to be treated that way? Donald Trump or any
other Republican And you know, so it's it's not that hard.
You don't have to get into minutia of bathrooms and
everything else.
Speaker 23 (01:28:42):
That's true, you know what. And that's the thing we
have to remember, is that they try to bait us
into getting these conversations about justifying and we don't have
to justify. A human right is a human right, Okay.
I'm not going to get into debate with you to
try to convince you is something that you already know.
(01:29:02):
You're just using that as a means of trying to
to change the narrative to put people's attention, you know,
sleight of hand, to move your attention away from what
the real problem is, and that's the economic injustice is
being done to you. To discuss something, to put something
on the table that is this is not a discussion
(01:29:22):
that we need to even get into. A human right
is a human right, okay, and we all know that,
and we don't have to justify it.
Speaker 3 (01:29:31):
Amen. That's Mel Poindexter.
Speaker 15 (01:29:33):
I'm Jeff Santo's He's coming back for the next half
hour an hour with Mel on a mail Monday on
the Jeff Santo Show Back in the Flash.
Speaker 3 (01:29:46):
AA.
Speaker 1 (01:29:47):
President Trump is in Japan today for the latest stop
of his Asia diplomacy tour. He met earlier with the
Japanese Emperor at Tokyo's Imperial Palace. Later tonight, he'll be
meeting with the country's new prime minister as he continues
to focus on trade, investment, and defense spending. Later on
this week, Trump is set to meet with Chinese leader
Shijiping in South Korea, with a US envoye saying trade

Speaker 13 (01:33:19):
Supporting the middle class. This is the Jeff Sato.
Speaker 3 (01:33:23):
Show, thirty three minutes past the hour.
Speaker 15 (01:33:38):
It is the Jeff Santo Show that you are tuned into,
coming to you live from the South coast here in
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. And of course we have brought
the Duncan Donuts bag to the screen for those of
you who are of course listening to us on A
M nine eighty W C A, P and boss. And
(01:34:00):
you can't see this unless you go to the website
dot Jeff Santo Show right at the top, and you
can go ahead and put on the web and you
can watch.
Speaker 3 (01:34:11):
Us live on do Jeff Santo Show dot com. And
I'm holding up and we dont know if we can
bring in mel Kevin. But there is the Duncan Donuts.
One pound of coffee.
Speaker 15 (01:34:26):
Cost you fourteen bucks at the SNS, seven dollars more
than a month ago. This is outrageous. This is the
Trump tariff economy. And this is only the beginning, folks,
and another couple of months to be parting twenty bucks
for a cup of for a pound of coffee, not
a cup. Duncan Donuts actually smart enough. They're actually trying
(01:34:46):
to sell bulk. It's telling like four for one at
the local.
Speaker 3 (01:34:50):
D and D here. But you know, this is what
we have to do, well, this is what we have
to do.
Speaker 15 (01:34:58):
We have to tell people where they are. You know,
I was talking with our great caller John and we're
going to go to tom in LA in a couple
of minutes. But we have to be able to break
it down to people.
Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
There are a lot of independent voters that were bamboozled
to use President Obama's term a very good one, by
the way, and I know he took it from King
I believe. But the point is is that MLK.
Speaker 15 (01:35:24):
But the point is, and I think this is very true,
is that that's what they are very good at you
can give them credit. The other side, they tried to
confuse you. But the proof is in the pudding. Just
go to the local store and it's thirteen ninety nine
or fourteen forty, whatever it is these days, and you
(01:35:45):
know they don't have to do anything else and point
it out, whether you're in house leadership. And I love
to see Hakeem Jeffries. You know, you go to the
New York stores. They're probably even more expensive because it's
New York City, and you know, and hold it up.
He said, this is insane. You know, that's why maybe
he does it the day after Mom Donnie Widnesdays.
Speaker 23 (01:36:04):
This is why you won.
Speaker 3 (01:36:05):
Rent's too damn high. You know, cost of living is
too high. So you know, there you go. I I
just think.
Speaker 26 (01:36:16):
This is.
Speaker 3 (01:36:19):
Really important, and I think that would be my advice
to your folks at the.
Speaker 22 (01:36:27):
D n C.
Speaker 3 (01:36:27):
Mister Mill.
Speaker 23 (01:36:30):
You know what, I think that becomes crucial because it's
living by example, So you have to actually take people
go where they live. You show them this is what
this is what it was before, this is what you're
dealing with. We are dealing with right now. So when
you hold up the bag and you say this, you know,
(01:36:52):
this is increased in the and the increase has nothing
to do with what's being provided as to the company
making it. This is purely because of one person's you know,
desire to ruin the country, ruin the economy, okay, and
we're paying the price for it. And I've mentioned and
(01:37:14):
I've also that's funny you say that because I've mentioned
this to a lot of the leadership in the DNC
is going on the ground actually going to stores and saying, hey,
look look at this. You know, look at the prices
that we're forced to pay now that we shouldn't have
to pay. There was no reason for it before you
got into office. And that's you know, the you know Trump.
(01:37:35):
Before he got in we were doing quite well, okay,
And I like to remind people of that. He made
an empty promise where he said, I'm gonna make you know,
remember that about the eggs and the bacon and how
I'm going to you I'm gonna make you know, bacon cheaper,
and I'm gonna, you know, make your drop the prices
of your eggs, which, by the way, there was no
(01:37:56):
existing problem at the time he mentioned it.
Speaker 3 (01:37:58):
But now go to the store.
Speaker 23 (01:38:01):
Hold up, you know, go and look at those eggs
in at bacon, you know, go and look at how
much you're paying for coffee now, and you ask yourself,
why am I being forced to pay this? And that's
simply because of one person's crazy desire to undermine our economy.
That's all it is.
Speaker 3 (01:38:21):
And I promise you this is something that we're doing
with your mind.
Speaker 23 (01:38:25):
People. This is why you're going to pain you're suffering
right now, is simply because of him.
Speaker 3 (01:38:30):
And here's the example of it.
Speaker 15 (01:38:34):
We're chatting with our good friend Mel Poindexter here on
the Jeff Santo Show again, the NC member from Massachusetts,
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and of course vice president of
formerly a vice president of the Brockton NAACP. Again Brockton,
the fighting boxers of the Great Commonwealth. That's Rocky Marciano,
(01:38:54):
that's marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Speaker 3 (01:38:57):
And of course that's no point Dexter. Again. He fights peacefully.
He does not put the gloves on and beat the
crap out of people. That's that's not Mel. That's why
we love him.
Speaker 15 (01:39:10):
Let's go to Los Angeles and somebody who fights back
peacefully but.
Speaker 3 (01:39:16):
Don't mess with him either. That's a good friend.
Speaker 15 (01:39:17):
Tom in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, California. You
are next with Mel Poindexter. Go right ahead, Tom, and
happy Monday to you, sir.
Speaker 27 (01:39:29):
Well, thank you, Joff, And first Mal, you're spot on
in terms of what you're saying. It's called reality, and
it's called being authentic, and it's called you know, reaching
down at the grassroots and showing what people are really
going through. It's not a difficult thing to do. Do
the man on the street type thing. Develop your own
(01:39:49):
web page, develop your own YouTube channel, whatever it might be,
and start doing this. Democrat. One of the other things
I'd like to say, Jeff, is that I don't want
to here Democrats anymore saying I don't take corporate pack money.
It doesn't mean anything. What they should be saying is
straight out, let's get all money out of politics. Let's
(01:40:13):
move to a public funding of elections where each person
puts five dollars on their tax returns and that's it.
I don't know why it is that they think this
this thing about I don't take corporate pack money or
whatever is even registering to the average voter out there.
But nobody understands what that means. A lot of people
(01:40:35):
don't even know what corporate packs are.
Speaker 22 (01:40:38):
Well, yeah, you.
Speaker 3 (01:40:41):
Think about a pack of wolves. You're thinking about a
six pack of beans.
Speaker 23 (01:40:46):
You know exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:40:47):
That's the whole problem.
Speaker 5 (01:40:49):
Tom.
Speaker 3 (01:40:49):
You know, oh, I don't take pack money.
Speaker 23 (01:40:51):
What the hell is pack?
Speaker 3 (01:40:52):
What the hell is a pack money?
Speaker 27 (01:40:56):
The country doesn't even know there's three branches of government,
and other people don't understand what Citizens United was. So
please people, get money out is all you have to say.
Speaker 23 (01:41:08):
Three words.
Speaker 27 (01:41:09):
Get money out of politics, get.
Speaker 22 (01:41:11):
Money out of the.
Speaker 27 (01:41:15):
TV business, realize that all Republicans want to do is
privatize everything. Privatize means propatized, public means that the good
of the everyday person. I mean, this is not complicated stuff.
And then throw in FDR and say there was a
guy named Franklin Dowlano Roosevelt, and you know what, he
(01:41:36):
raised the tax rate up to ninety percent on the
top earners. And you know what he said, if you
want to leave, well you know what, we will miss
you very much. I mean, he did not play around.
And I'm just wishing that somebody would start talking to
common Bess on the Democratic Party and start talking like
(01:41:57):
a real life human being. You know, you goto like
Ja Pocket and people like that that are close to it.
But the thing is, we still need to talk to
the regular person out there and saying get money out
of politics, all money out of politics, and be bull
about it.
Speaker 23 (01:42:19):
You are so no true words have been spoken, and
you're right.
Speaker 3 (01:42:22):
That's one of the things that we're trying to get across.
Speaker 23 (01:42:25):
The people is that this is not about who has
the biggest paycheck, because we're not here to buy a vote,
We're not here to buy an opinion. We're here to
represent the people. The people are who we are here for,
and it's the people who drive what we're what the
(01:42:46):
agenda that we put together is driven by you. I
appreciate the fact that you're out there, and I can
tell you that I'm one of the people out here
who's trying to echo and advocate for the same thing.
So you have said what you've said today summarizes true Wow,
proud to thinking, and I applaud and appreciate that.
Speaker 15 (01:43:12):
A lot of background noise there. I don't know if
you're in the wind and you're a great convertible, but
you know I can say those jokes Becau.
Speaker 3 (01:43:20):
We're on in LA now. But the fact is is that,
you know, it is really important to.
Speaker 15 (01:43:29):
Have the tenacity that as I've been saying, however, you
can connect with people, whether you know their voters are
just citizens who need to be informed and eventually registered
to vote and make it easier.
Speaker 3 (01:43:43):
To register to vote.
Speaker 15 (01:43:44):
You can do it using music. You can do it
using sports. You can do it, you know, by just
talking to somebody. Our great friend John has a great
dog named Puck. A lot of people would like to
pet Puck. Well as as as they are petting Puck,
say that fifteenth times as fast. The fact is is
that you can start up a conversation, Hey, what do
(01:44:05):
you think about this guy Trump? What do you think
of you know, I mean there's a lot of different
ways Tom and Mel that you can do this, and
I just I just feel like, you know, he gets
stuck in Washington speak. You know, it's the great John
Carrey's been on the show many times. You to gotta
get him on again. In did a long time.
Speaker 3 (01:44:23):
But you know when he said in two thousand and four,
you know I voted for it before I voted against it,
And people are saying, huh, what are you talking about?
And of course what we was talking about is the
Iraq war vote that he voted for it after you know,
before he did the whole thing got out of control
and then he voted against it. But nobody understands that language. Now,
(01:44:47):
this is this is what is wrong. You cannot have
Washington speak talking to whether it's the family of our
good friend Tom that you know originated from Wisconsin, or
our friends in California or in Massachusetts or wherever. You
gotta speak the language that everybody understands exactly.
Speaker 23 (01:45:08):
And Tom's right, I mean, and Tom represents people, okay,
and people want you to talk to them, you know,
give me a straight answer, you know, let's you know,
I have an opinion or a concern and I want
to honestly feel that you're listening to me and you're
not just you know, placating to what I'm saying. No,
(01:45:28):
Washington Speak, talk to people regularly, just like you would
talk to anyone else on any other subject, and let
them know that in that way, I appreciate what you're saying.
I'm listening to what you're saying, and I'm trying to
figure a way that we can best resolve the concern
that you raised.
Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
Period. That's what this is about talking to people. And
that's one of the lessons.
Speaker 23 (01:45:50):
That we learned from twenty twenty four is that we
have to spend more time actually talking to people, sitting
down with them, listening to them. When Tom called in,
what did he say? I want someone to talk to
me and just give me a straight answer. And that's
what we're trying to do. That's the whole point, as
I said, of our strategy of bringing all the players
(01:46:12):
together and saying, we need to talk to people in
a manner that they know that we respect where they're
coming from, what they're experiencing, and let them know that
we're honestly looking to resolve their concerns and their problems,
and that we're equally invested in doing whatever it takes
to turn things around to make the country work much
(01:46:33):
better for them.
Speaker 3 (01:46:36):
Tom, you get it. You understand marketing, you understand communication,
and I wish we had you know, a dozen callers
like you who could go out and preach like like
Mel does and what I try to do here on
the show three hours every Monday through Friday, because we
need that kind of spirit, that kind of passion and
(01:46:57):
that kind of knowledge. Again the FDR Pathway, and I'm
going to have to have some designer, you know, design
a road like the Yellow Brick Road and have it
called the FDR Pathway. And maybe this is going to
finally get to people that this is the road we
get to take, you know, and you could take occasional
exit off of it, but for the most part, that's
(01:47:18):
what the road you have to stay on. Appreciate you
Tom very much. Well, you know, I mean it's laid out.
Speaker 15 (01:47:26):
It's laid out for the Democratic Party to follow, our
good friend Jim Roosevelt's grandfather, and you know, and yes,
you can use the dunkin Donuts thing occasionally and every
day if you want. But you know, I mean he
has for us given us so securityes a lot of
(01:47:48):
people know, but he's still.
Speaker 3 (01:47:50):
Going to remind people it was FDR who started it.
Speaker 24 (01:47:53):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:47:53):
The WPA once again works progress administration. You know, we
can talk about unplowing, we can talk about what he
wanted to do in the Second Bill.
Speaker 15 (01:48:03):
Of Rights that he didn't get to because he passed
away in forty five. And he all brought out in
the Michael Moore movie.
Speaker 3 (01:48:12):
You know capitalism a love story of the titles that
Moore would do, you know, and and to me, this
is how this is how democrats need to talk and
need to fight back on and if we do that,
I think we have a very good chance to win.
Speaker 23 (01:48:30):
Mel Yeah, I you know, and I'm glad you mentioned
Jim because, as I told you before, Jim and I
have these discussions all the time because there's a blueprint.
And that blueprint, you know, his grandfather, Fdr laid out
a strategy if we were dealing with a crisis as
(01:48:51):
a country, and he created, working with a lot of
very intelligent people, a solution to addressing those problems very forward.
Speaker 3 (01:49:00):
He talked to people where they live.
Speaker 23 (01:49:03):
He expressed to them, I feel your pain, and I'm
going to do whatever it takes to try to get
us back on course. A solid blueprint, and I think
that that's key to us, you know, putting the country
back on track is using that same mindset, that same blueprint.
You know, again, it's important to have people out there
(01:49:26):
who are giving the correct narrative. And this is what
makes you so important is that you're bringing people to
the table and you're expressing giving them an opportunity to
tell them. Look, we're listening and we hear what you're saying,
and it's important for you to express you know, what
you're dealing with every day, and you become and I've
said to see you before, you are the person who
(01:49:49):
is bringing your gathering the concern, bringing them to the table,
and then creating the opportunity for those who can try
to help to resolve the problem.
Speaker 3 (01:50:00):
You're bringing them to the table too.
Speaker 23 (01:50:02):
That's the role, the key role that you play, and
that's why it's so important and advantageous to have you
as part of this collaborative team.
Speaker 3 (01:50:12):
Well, I tell you I am very proud to be
on the Team Blue.
Speaker 15 (01:50:15):
I'm very proud to be able to state my view
to Team Blue members like yourself and others. And I
think you know I have twenty twenty five years experience
doing progressive of populist talk radio and if given the platforms,
we can really educate the American people in a lot
(01:50:35):
of different ways.
Speaker 3 (01:50:36):
As I said, talk.
Speaker 15 (01:50:37):
Sports, talk politics, talk music. However we're going to do it.
I mean I made this earlier. You got to get
at the top of the hour information on the Bruce
Springsteen cover band you know a lot of people, you
know who are Bruce Springsteen fanatics are big voters. You know,
it's interesting from about two thousand to this past election cycle,
(01:51:00):
Bruce Springsteen is out for the Democrats every four years.
Why because he can work, He can reach working class folks,
not just a working class white.
Speaker 3 (01:51:08):
Man, you know. I mean there are a lot of people.
Speaker 15 (01:51:11):
I mean, you know the late Clarence Clemens, you know,
as an African American great saxophonist. I mean, you know
there's a lot of a lot of African Americans who
followed his career and no Springsteen because of him. So
I mean it's not just you know, a white guy
with flannel shirt and you know, baseball cap on. You know,
you get rid of this stereotype working classes a lot
(01:51:33):
of different people. They can wear aprons too.
Speaker 3 (01:51:36):
You know.
Speaker 15 (01:51:36):
I mean, it's it's it's a it's a huge deal.
And I think you know you mentioned heroes and one
person who I love to mention with the FDR is
Francis Perkins, the Secretary of Labor who really pushed and
said she wouldn't continue to work for Roosevelt as a
governor when when she was working in New York and
that was you know, she said I want social Security,
(01:52:00):
got to have social Security, and of course that was
FDR's landmark legislation. I just think that this is really
the important piece that we need to start thinking, is
that Democrats have brought you being bang boom, you know,
from social Security devoting rights to Medicare and medicaid. You know,
(01:52:20):
I often joke about the monsters, right, you know, in
the Monster Show in How Wacky I Am, you know,
they talk about the only thing we have left. This
is nineteen sixty five, and of course to hear that
Medicare was passed, he's in the show. They keep saying, well,
you know, we've lost everything, but we got Medicare coming.
Speaker 23 (01:52:39):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (01:52:39):
I mean, that's how they sold it back in nineteen
sixty five. Credit to LBJ and his press team.
Speaker 15 (01:52:45):
You know, they went into TV shows of that era
and they said, oh, well this is how we're going
to talk to people about Medicare.
Speaker 3 (01:52:50):
We're going to put it on the monsters and other things.
Speaker 23 (01:52:55):
Well, I mean that's the thing. There's more that binds us,
brings us together, then actually divides us. Okay, we are
all positively impacted by Medica and Medicaid. We are all
positively impacted by social security, you know, and these were
things that were positive actions to help better people's lives.
(01:53:18):
So that's the thing that we as Democrats have to
keep reminding people. That's why this is so important.
Speaker 28 (01:53:23):
And unfortunately that's the reason why he's trying to tear
it down because it's so positive, because it was so
beneficial so many, so many people across so many.
Speaker 23 (01:53:35):
Spectrums, racial, gender, it's all. It binds us all together.
So that's the reason why he's trying to undermine it.
And we as Democrats, and you're right on point, Jeff,
when you say this, we have to remind people this
is why we work so hard to put this in place,
because we all worked hard for this. This is something
that we all built together, and we all must fight
(01:53:57):
to keep it.
Speaker 19 (01:53:58):
We have to.
Speaker 23 (01:53:59):
And the Democrats parties there, you're sounding the alarm and
people have to be vested and making sure that that
is not taken away from them, and we are standing
shoulder to shoulder to make sure that happens.
Speaker 15 (01:54:14):
You're gonna have to get a bell or some kind
of alarm to go off. You're so spot on, and
I love to be the Paul Revere of Warning science.
Speaker 23 (01:54:24):
You are, I've said it before, you are the Paul
Revere of the progressive movement. Never forget that you're sounding
the alarm, you're bringing people, You're making them aware. And
that's so important now because it's owning our narrative and
getting the truth out there.
Speaker 3 (01:54:40):
And that's what you do so well, Paul Revere of
the Progressive Movement. Thank you man. You know that actually
stands for something that we need better.
Speaker 9 (01:54:48):
P R.
Speaker 3 (01:54:49):
Paul Revere pr Public Relationships exactly.
Speaker 15 (01:54:52):
EXAs we go around it round, let's go back to Minneapolis.
Speaker 3 (01:54:57):
The owner of Puck is back on the line.
Speaker 15 (01:55:00):
That of course is John from Minnesota, and we want
to have a portrait of Puck. It's part of our
Jeff santo Show going forward. We'll get have to get
some artists going, John uh to give us a proper rendition.
You're next with mel Point extra here on the Jeff
Santos Show.
Speaker 3 (01:55:17):
John John, are you there? Well, we must have taken
Puck out for a walk. Ah okay, all right, all right,
I think we have them, Johnny, you with us, all right,
(01:55:46):
So let me know when we do have them. Kevin
and we'll we'll.
Speaker 15 (01:55:51):
Continue our conversation and get the phone number to join us.
A three three five four five five three three three.
Speaker 3 (01:55:57):
We got them. Okay, John, your next with mel Pointdexter
here Je go right ahead.
Speaker 16 (01:56:03):
Yeah, I'll send you a picture of Puck. He's very photogenic.
He loves attention and as much as you can give it.
Right now, he's angry with me because I took a
bike ride and I went to the gym. So I'll
be back in a little bit. Heer and okay, Yeah,
(01:56:27):
I just wanted to say, you know, I hope that
the leadership of the party finally gets the fact that
the only way we're going to beat the Republicans is
to double down on things like medicare for all things
that people want. It's not a personality contest, and it's
(01:56:51):
not about how awful this person is. It's about policy
and that will win.
Speaker 5 (01:56:59):
That's doing.
Speaker 15 (01:57:03):
What The rent's too damn high, too much for health care, costs,
too much for a number of different daily needs of
the American people.
Speaker 3 (01:57:11):
And if you're living in a big city and could
major problems, John, So you know, definitely, thank you.
Speaker 23 (01:57:18):
The go ahead, and you know, and it's good you
mentioned that, because in November first, we are all going
to feel it. Unfortunately again because of negative actions, everyone's
healthcare premium is going to go through the roof. And
it wasn't be and it wasn't It was because of
(01:57:38):
again one action, you know, the occupant of the White
House who has once again he and the Republican Party
have once again undermined the American you know, the American
way of life and didn't even include us.
Speaker 14 (01:57:53):
You know.
Speaker 23 (01:57:54):
So we're now feeling this. We're gonna feel this January.
I mean, in November first, we're all gonna feel it,
and we need to let them know just how angry
are about it. And we're not gonna accept it. We're
not gonna take it, and we're gonna fight back.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
So thanks, yeah, exactly, my thanks to you, John, and
thank you for the call.
Speaker 4 (01:58:14):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:58:14):
We just have about a minute left here with our
good friend Mel Poindexter again, d NC member, former vice
president of.
Speaker 15 (01:58:20):
The Brockton, Massachusetts m double A CP Urban League Member two.
I just think again, we're we're eight days away from
a November fourth. You say November first, we need to
kick ass for the working class, in the middle class too.
Speaker 3 (01:58:38):
Uh in this next week, get everybody to know how
to vote. You know, Gary South was saying, you know,
it looks very very good, you know for Democrats in California.
You know, let's make it look even better. You know,
let's have the blowout, you know, reach epic proportions. Your
final thoughts, mister Poindexter.
Speaker 23 (01:58:57):
Lets your vote, lets your legs walk, and let your
vote speak everyone. This is our opportunity to show them
that we are not going to sit by idly and
let them do the wust. So everyone walk to the poles,
drive in the polls and be heard. Your voice is now.
Speaker 3 (01:59:16):
This is the time to be heard.
Speaker 23 (01:59:18):
Vote everyone. This vote is too important to let go
un you know, to to not challenge and fight back.
Speaker 3 (01:59:26):
Vote everyone, Please the Brockton fugilist. He actually doesn't live
in block, you know, to go along with the whole thing.
It's great to always have Mel Poindexter on a Monday.
If you are not awake yet, folks, well something's wrong.
You gotta get some you know, pep pills or something.

fired up. We'll talk next Monday, my friend, all the best,

We'll be right back. Thank you.

Now here's Jeff.
Speaker 3 (02:06:59):
It is our three of the Jeff Danteo Show.
Speaker 15 (02:07:02):
And welcome to it, folks, coming to you live from

Bay of Los Angeles. Our next guest grew up in
Los Angeles. Sure exactly where we're gonna find out, though
he is of course a regular here on Mondays. It's
Myerson Monday. Of course, that's Harold Myerson. He of course
is the fabulous journalist and editor at large of The
(02:07:47):
American Prospect, and we bring in via video, Harold Myerson.
Harold's great to have you on the program, my friend,
say hello to all your friends in Los Angeles, and.
Speaker 3 (02:08:01):
Great to be here, Jeff. Great to have you on,
Great to have you on. You know, I must tell you.
Speaker 15 (02:08:10):
It is just unbelievable where we are in the state
of this nation, with the cutbacks, with you know, medicare
about to hit the chopping block Medicaid.
Speaker 3 (02:08:25):
I should say, you know, we have people who have
been unemployed, people in minds, federal workers.
Speaker 15 (02:08:33):
I mean, this is this is a disaster of epic proportions,
and we can we can put the blame where it
certainly lies in Donald Trump, as I have been doing
for a while, and I don't know if I've done
this with you on air, but this is a dunkin
Donuts coffee. As you know, it started here in Quincy, Massachusetts.
(02:08:56):
This pound of coffee a month ago costs seven dollars
and ninety nine cents last week, and for the last
three weeks fourteen dollars and fifty cents.
Speaker 3 (02:09:07):
I believe at the S and S.
Speaker 15 (02:09:10):
This is something that you know needs to be pointed
out and needs to be laid at the doorstep of
the commander in chief you know who's now you know,
playing foot sea in Japan and eventually.
Speaker 3 (02:09:21):
China with his tariffs. And this is the Trump tariff
on steroids, anti Brazil and so forth.
Speaker 26 (02:09:29):
Well, yes, and his Latin American policy certainly leaves something
to be desired. The president Gariff on Brazilian coffee is
raising everyone's coffee prices. Meanwhile, his pro Argentina tilt, which
is a result of the fact that he has a
mini me president Inhabim Malay in Argentina, has really devastated
(02:09:57):
the agriculture in this country, not just those farmers who
raise soybeans, but now also with the favorable deal now
on Argentinian meat, Argentinian steaks. It's not doing American cattle ranchers,
(02:10:19):
and he favors either. So I am reminded of the
great nineteen forties Western Red River, directed by Howard Hawks,
which featured besides John Wayne, Walter Brennan as the guy
who makes the coffee on the drive. Now, between wiping
(02:10:39):
out the value of the cattle herd and raising the
value of the coffee, he has completely negated the effect
of an iconic Western that featured both coffee and cattle.
Speaker 3 (02:10:54):
He's screwing up.
Speaker 26 (02:10:55):
That economy, he's screwing up consumers, and he's screwing up growers.
Speaker 3 (02:11:00):
Well yeah, and he cared. He cares less.
Speaker 15 (02:11:03):
He doesn't care about anybody but himself, you know it all.
You know, he goes into these deals. It's like, okay,
mister she what can you do for me? How much
can I put in my pocket? You know, uh, you
know you want to you want to have some condos
in New York. Uh, you know, give me a piece
uh similar in Japan, you know, I mean, you know
Saudi Arabia. Uh, you know, you a whatever. This is
(02:11:26):
all the guy is just you know, you know, hit
the take the running and run. You know, he knows
that he's going to be limited here. Hopefully the Democrats
can win the Senate and the House and uh impeach
him once and for all and and not be uh
you know, as a good friend. Consultant from California, Gary
South said, you know, no more wisses please Democrats. Uh,
(02:11:50):
you know, unlike you know, the former Attorney general who
couldn't get the job done.
Speaker 3 (02:11:55):
You know, as Bill Belichick would say, and now the ridiculous,
uh you know football coach who once said, you know,
do your job. Well, obviously the AG didn't do a
very good one because you know Trumps president. End of
story there.
Speaker 15 (02:12:09):
But to me, this is an important piece. You know,
we need to educate people, and you know, we don't
have all the platforms. And this is the problem of
both progressives and and and the Democratic Party more so
on on the d's but not having the platforms because
you know, his lies get repeated. You know, his bs
(02:12:29):
and and Conment Act is repeated on and on and
on around the country. We're very happy to be on
in Los Angeles and in San Francisco and Boston of course,
and hopefully come into a station near you, Harrold. But
you know, the point is is that it is of
course you're in DC. I just think that there is
(02:12:54):
you know, a real understanding here that yes, we're going
to do everything we can to win Prop fifty in California.
A reason why you know, we are trying to push
what is happening in California to the other forty nine
states and the benefit that they have, but also the
messaging of Gavin Newsom. You know, his pushback, fight back,
(02:13:19):
you know, play fire with fire is not only just
the political scenario of Prop fifty in the redistricting fight,
but it's a verbal pushback which I think he to
a lesser extent Pritzker and others in the Democratic Party,
but I think led by Newsom. And to me, you know,
(02:13:40):
I think that his announcement Saturday, maybe of him potentially
considering a run for president, to me is an example
that if you fight back, the American people will fight
back with you, and maybe Gavin news An anyways, but.
Speaker 2 (02:13:58):
They like that.
Speaker 3 (02:13:59):
People want fight again, fighting peacefully. Harrol. Well.
Speaker 26 (02:14:03):
Not only that, and by the way, that announcement can't
have come as a surprise to anyone who's followed any
news over the last couple of years.
Speaker 3 (02:14:12):
But as well, there.
Speaker 26 (02:14:13):
Are some policy innovations that Newsom has put through but
I think really addressed the nation's need. He recently announced
that on January first, the state of California will begin
marketing a vile of insulin at eleven dollars a pop,
which the state funded has funded the manufacture of in
(02:14:37):
some various laboratories. I mean, this is a serious way
of dealing with the corporate big farmer's overpriced and ridiculous
overpricing of drugs, and you know, also obviates the need
for people who can't afford medicine to you know, try
to get it from Canada. If we had more governors
(02:14:57):
and hopefully a president who backed you know, the public
option when it comes to drug supply, I mean not
just on the insurance side, but on the production side,
this would become a much more affordable nation, which Lord
knows it needs.
Speaker 3 (02:15:16):
To become, no doubt.
Speaker 15 (02:15:19):
Talking with Harold Myerson here on the Jeff Santo Show,
the phone number to join us eight three three five
four five five three three three, I want to say
to you, I believe we just talked to Mail Poindexter,
DNC member from Massachusetts and uh, you know, a.
Speaker 3 (02:15:40):
Real pitfall for justice pit pull And.
Speaker 15 (02:15:46):
I did talk to consultant Gary South as well in California.
Speaker 3 (02:15:50):
It was great Davis a senior advisor for four years
in California as governor and worked a lot of state
wide campaigns. And you know, the passion from mel and
the logic that you get from Gary to me points
to a very positive roadmap for the Democrats.
Speaker 15 (02:16:08):
I just think that they should listen more to the
people outside the Beltway, to the folks that are there.
Nothing against a lot of good people in Washington and
AOC and Senator Murphy Connecticut and Bernie Sanders, they.
Speaker 3 (02:16:23):
All live there and serve there.
Speaker 15 (02:16:26):
But I mentioned in those three in particular, even though
they're senators and House member in AOC, they don't think
inside the Beltway. And you know, you live there for
a while, you know, you grew up in California, you
still have a progressive mindset that doesn't really get clouded
by the you know, the inside game.
Speaker 3 (02:16:45):
Well, we've got to react to what Trump says, Oh
my god, let's just thirty seconds. We've got to refer
back to him, and it just becomes so muddled. I
just think that that has to be something that Martin
is thinking about, mister Martin being the d n C chair,
because you cannot have a muddled sort of well, on
(02:17:09):
this side, we can do that, or on that side,
we can do this. It's gonna be straightforward.
Speaker 15 (02:17:14):
As I've been saying for a long time, strong and
wrong beats weake and right every day of the week.
But strong and right and a populous progressive focus will
always beat the wrong because people know what is between
right and wrong, and they know that Trump is wrong.
Your thoughts there, because you live in DC, you get it.
Speaker 30 (02:17:37):
Probably the appeal of strong and why and right the strong,
they stop to preference that.
Speaker 3 (02:17:47):
But in terms of strong, we.
Speaker 26 (02:17:50):
See that in fact, the only American political thing who
has a net positive in his polling is Bernie Sanders,
who has the uh outsider insulation of a lifelong identification
as a socialist uh and someone fighting corporate power. Uh,
you know, as as a way to uh, you know,
(02:18:12):
keep uh keep that standing. That's that's that's why he
has it. And I should also point out though that
you know, Newsom and Pritzker have the capacity as governors
in a trifecta in trifecta states to actually get things done,
which for all the great you know attributes to a
(02:18:33):
Bernie and an aoc uh, they simply don't have because
the Democrats are in a minority in in both houses.
The The question that this raises, though, in my mind,
is there are I think eleven at least eleven other
governors who have trifecta states. Democratic governors like Kathy Oakland
New York who don't really, uh, follow the exemplary path
(02:18:59):
of using that power to create, you know, things like
a more affordable country. So you know, I think when
we look at, among other things, the possible presidential field
of twenty twenty eight, and I would surmise that not
only Newsome will get in, but the Pritzker will get
in as well. Look, there are other governors too in
(02:19:23):
trifecta states who can do things, who can push the envelope.
A Wess Moore in Maryland, a hotel in New York
and so on. And actually a more Helian in your
state of Massachusetts, Jess.
Speaker 3 (02:19:40):
Who a lots I'm pushing her in that direction, yeah.
Speaker 26 (02:19:45):
But in a lot of dead wood in the Democratic
legislature though, So you know, every state has its own issues.
But you know, if you're looking at substantive pushback, you
look to the states, and not all the Democratic states
have have really you know, gone the distance on this.
Speaker 15 (02:20:06):
I agree with one hundred percent again. And Kevin will
let us know eight three three five four five five
three three three is the phone number to join us,
and we'll take your calls for hell to the bottom
of the hour. I have to tell you, I think
there is another another piece to all this, and that's
(02:20:29):
Letitia James in in New York.
Speaker 3 (02:20:32):
If Mondanie wins as expected and and does very well,
you know, bigger than the whatever eight to ten point
lead that he has on Cuomo or fifteen point lead,
you know, and if it's in that range, I'm wondering
if James would look at running for governor because you know,
(02:20:54):
she agrees with Mandane. She was there on election night,
and I think she's dynamic and I.
Speaker 15 (02:21:00):
Think she would fly in the same orbit that that
Gavin Newsom is that Prisker is as a governor who
would push the envelope as she did an attorney general
against Trump in the last four years.
Speaker 3 (02:21:16):
That's why you went after, what's your thoughts on that?
From your vantage point?
Speaker 26 (02:21:22):
Well, I've long been a Tiss James fan. She actually
came initially out of the Working Families Party, which is
the electrical instrument of an electoral electoral instrument of democratic
fusion voting in New York Progressives and yeah, a stellar
(02:21:46):
ag and you know, look, Coco is sort of the
accidental governor formal pictor as his lieutenant governor, in part
because you you know, she would get absolutely no coverage
at all, leaving the field open for him to do
whatever he wanted, and of course he did, which is
why he had to resign, and she became the accidental
(02:22:10):
governor who doesn't really have significant roots in most of
the key constituencies and make up the New York electorate.
So I think Tis James could be a strong candidate
in twenty twenty six, and I would hope, I would
certainly hope she runs good because you know, she could
(02:22:31):
indeed push New York to a version of what we
see in Pritzker's Illinois and in Gavin newsoms California.
Speaker 3 (02:22:42):
No doubt.
Speaker 15 (02:22:42):
And I think that you know that, you know, when
you have the three biggest Democratic states on including Texas
and Florida population wise, you know that, to me is
a very powerful agenda and it would be extremely extremely popular,
I think with the voter, and you know, they would
be a pretty amazing team, you know, together, and of course,
(02:23:06):
you know, if Newsom is elected president of twenty eight,
then you know.
Speaker 3 (02:23:11):
Then raise both of their profiles.
Speaker 15 (02:23:12):
All right, So let me let me take you to
another thing that I think is fascinating here. There are
a lot of folks that I talked to on a
daily basis that want to see the connection made between Democrats,
(02:23:36):
you know, understanding the poverty that has now come aplot
because of Trump's tactics. You know, Jim McGovern from Massachusetts
three four years ago, when the economy was getting soft,
he went to some grocery stores and see if he
could live on like twenty dollars a day or something
(02:23:56):
of that sort. You know, I don't want to make
out to be a photo op. You know that means nothing.
McGovern actually has done a lot on poverty to his credit,
but I think that the more you're connecting with people,
you know, on something like that.
Speaker 3 (02:24:11):
A man brought up the dunkin Donuts thing is one example.
But but I think people want to see that.
Speaker 15 (02:24:17):
You know, there's this whole fight with AFGE uh, you know,
the Union and you know, putting pressure on the Democrats
to settle and and all that. You know, that's that's
good for Washington talk. But the reality is is that
these are people that are suffering, you know. I mean,
they're not in lines to you know, go see Bruce
(02:24:37):
Springsteen or whomever. They're in lines for food. And by
the way, to Springsteen's credit, he's done a lot with
food banks, you know, his entire career, and and still
does talk to me about that because you know, again,
you've got to get out of the Washington world where
and it's I love I've lived there for eight years.
(02:24:59):
I'm not ti DC because it's DC. I'm just telling
you that it gets you get sucked up into this
whole world that most of the world doesn't connect with.
I mentionedred friend Sewn Cherry been on my show.
Speaker 3 (02:25:12):
You know, I voted for it before I voted against it.
Nobody talks like that outside the Beltway, right.
Speaker 26 (02:25:17):
I think the proof positive of that kind of approach
is the Mandami. Yeah, pign He's made affordability his central issue.
He has walked the walk as well as talking the talk,
and been all over town dealing with issues of pervasive
issues in New York of unaffordability, primarily in the first
(02:25:40):
instance of housing, but then of things like childcare and
the net with the tariffs, rising cost of food, the
cost of transit, and so on. You know, I mean,
it's not like New York was about to suddenly say, oh, okay,
this time we're going to elect a socialist. This was
the guy who understood that you actualize that with with
(02:26:05):
you know, kitchen table issues, you know and in experience
with you know, the real crunch that everyone in New
York except the wealthy uh now has to figure out
how to cope with, how to get around how to
you know, how to survive with with costs like that.
Of course it's not just New York. I mean, you know,
(02:26:26):
childcare is pretty unaffordable almost any place you go, as
I can attest since my daughter pay pay for the
childcare for my grandson. So uh, you know, these are
these are the real issues. And you don't have to
be either a DC poll or a rocket scientist to
(02:26:47):
figure out that these are the kinds of issues.
Speaker 4 (02:26:50):
Uh.
Speaker 26 (02:26:50):
You know you need to be not just highlighting but
with coming up some pretty some pretty serious solutions for
you want to get back in power.
Speaker 5 (02:26:59):
That's how you do it.
Speaker 3 (02:27:01):
I couldn't agree with you. More final minutes here with
our good friend Harold Myerson. Again.
Speaker 15 (02:27:06):
You can check out his great work at the Prospect
dot org. You can also talk you know with you
can also listen to him.
Speaker 3 (02:27:14):
I should say here every Monday on the Jeff Santos Show,
usually at five pm Eastern. That's two o'clock Pacific time.
Give me again, you know, you've got a couple of
minutes here.
Speaker 18 (02:27:25):
Uh.
Speaker 15 (02:27:26):
You know, I I really think that Mamdani is going
to open the door for a lot of people of color.
I think an African Americans. Of course he's from He's
an African American Uganda. But you know Latinos, uh, people
who you know, Asians, both West Asians, East Asians. I
(02:27:50):
just think that he is the ultimate New York you know.
I mean, if you went down the street, you really
couldn't tell is he Latino, is he Greek?
Speaker 3 (02:27:57):
Is the Portuguese? Is he you know somebody who grew
up in Asia?
Speaker 15 (02:28:03):
I mean, you know, he represents that melting pot, the
greatness of New York, your thoughts about it.
Speaker 26 (02:28:09):
As did the greatest of New York mayor's Fiarella LaGuardia,
of an Italian father, a Jewish mother could speak Italian,
could speak Yiddish. They added up Jewish and Catholic.
Speaker 3 (02:28:23):
And raised him.
Speaker 26 (02:28:24):
I think as an Episcopalian, and you know, he was
a melting pot mayor for mid twentieth century New York.
As Zoran Mundami is the melting pot mayor for mid
early twenty first century New York. There's a real through
line there. And you know, Laguardi was elected by progressives
(02:28:45):
and the Italian community, and Mandami will be elected by
progressives and the South Asian community, which has not really
had significant presence in that city's politics before. So they're
really significant parallels between the two.
Speaker 15 (02:29:03):
We are chatting with Harrow Myerson. We have been chatting
as we look to go to break here. I tell
you the opportunity is here over the next week in
California Prop fifty, which looks very good in Gary South's
polls and so forth. You know, it's it's close, but
Harrow Myers, Harrow Myerson, it's close. In New Jersey if
(02:29:25):
you want to run for governor, I guess I'm endorsing you.
But it looks like Mikey Cheryl Meryl a little closer.
And of course the Virginia race Democrat you know. And
we'll talk to you on the eve of election next Monday.
Speaker 3 (02:29:44):
Yes we will, Okay, look forward to it. Take care.
Speaker 15 (02:29:48):
That's Harrow Myerson. I'm Jeff Santos. We'll be back with
another person who has an l A connection. That's the
executive director of Progressive Democrats of America. Alan Minsky joins

A man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk can
wear regular clothes during his trial. The Utah judge in
the case made his ruling today, adding that Tyler Robinson
has presumed innocent and potential jurors seeing him in prison
attire will be prejudicial. This ruling also applies to any

in person hearings, with the next one set for January.
Robinson will also be required to wear a constraints swallen court,
but the media is forbidden to show them this. Senate
is returning today as the nearly month long stalemate over
the government shutdown continues. However, senators aren't currently scheduled to
vote on a measure to reopen the government after it
failed to be passed for a twelfth time last week.
(02:31:57):
This coming weekend, November one, government funding four food assistants
will run out for about forty two million people. Democrats
in the Senate are demanding Republicans address Affordable Care Act

which would double the average cost of out of pocket premiums.

the fantastic executive director of Progressive Democrats of America. You
can find them online in PD America. He of course
understands the.
Speaker 3 (02:34:02):
Way you need to communicate to people, whether utilizing music
or the utilizing sports. And Alan Minsky of course is
a fantastic sports fan, which a great soccer player growing
up in Europe. And of course he is a big
Cardinals fan.

you know, not positive in these central imagination.
Speaker 3 (02:34:27):
But we move on.
Speaker 15 (02:34:28):
It's early in the NHL season. We bring in Alan Minsky.
Hello sir, Happy Monday, Happy Minsky Monday.
Speaker 3 (02:34:35):
What's going on? Man?
Speaker 21 (02:34:37):
Well, thank you very much. And while I normally come
to you from Los Angeles or sometimes of course in DC,
I do a lot of work in DC and around
the country. I happen to be now in just short
of Yosemite Park, in the town of Sonora, California, that
in eighteen fifty or eighteen forty nine. You know, there's
a football team named after that. I think people know
(02:34:58):
what happened in California and yet gold Rush. And it's
a very beautiful place where I am. The town is
very interesting, very old. The you know, main Street is
very narrow. They have almost no buildings later than you know,
the eighteen sixties or something, and so it's a picturesque
in that sense, but it is not doing that well economically.
(02:35:20):
Only a few of these up where I am. There
seemed to be some large lots and some richer people.
I'm above the city in the hills, but down there
and in a lot of the surrounding areas, a lot
of a lot of dollar generals stores, a lot of
signs about, you know, contending with your mess addiction, that
(02:35:41):
kind of thing. Or fanl addiction and uh, depending on
what you know, corner you're at or what story you
go into, you can see some people who seem pretty
depressed and maybe not surprisingly then this was an area
where Donald Trumpt is very well in the election. In
the election is the recent one. So it's sort of
(02:36:02):
a mega area and that that does exist in California.
So it's very interesting. And uh, but you know, I don't,
I don't. No, it's you know, running around promoting Donald
Trump around here, but goes certainly were the results of
the elections.
Speaker 3 (02:36:20):
No doubt.
Speaker 15 (02:36:20):
We're talking with Alan Minsky on the road today and
I guess we're gonna have to give you a new nickname,
you know, sebenty Sam Uh cartoon care.
Speaker 9 (02:36:29):
Uh.
Speaker 15 (02:36:29):
So there we go, and so another nickname for you,
my friend. Well, you know this is as we just
talked with our good friend Harold Myerson of the American Prospect,
uh and earlier today with our good friend mel Poindexter
the d m C and Gary South and everybody I
think is positive on Prop fifty And again people you
(02:36:53):
get to get out to vote, and that's important, but overall, nationally,
you know, Democrats need to get you need to fight
back and talk about as Mamdani is talking about. I
want to get into that race in New York City
in a second here, Allen.
Speaker 3 (02:37:07):
But the whole pushback, fight back again, all peacefully, non violent.
We saw that seven million strong on No King's Day
last Saturday.
Speaker 15 (02:37:20):
And to me, I really feel that if you do this,
Democrats can win, and they can win in the majority
big time. And I think that also goes for the
Senate because I think the cracks that you may be seeing,
you know, in different Blue states, I think we're going
to start seeing them more in places like Iowa and
(02:37:42):
North Carolina and so forth. Of course, you've gotta have
the you're gotta have the voter suppression folks, you know,
to contend with. But I think you can you can
deal with that. The guy who to me has personified,
you know, the progressive mantle from Bernie is obviously Mom Donnie,
uh you know, Andrew Cuomo, you know, seems like, you know,
(02:38:05):
the guy that's you know, on his last legs. He's
out there lying, hanging out with Donald Trump and his
people and so forth.
Speaker 3 (02:38:13):
And to me, you know, Mam Donnie is youthful, you know,
I didn't know this, but La Guardier uh, the of
course La Guardia Airport, named after the former mayor, was
sort of the old all world. You know.
Speaker 15 (02:38:27):
I knew that he obviously was an Italian background, but
I didn't know about his Jewish mom, and I also
didn't know about the fact that he grew Fiscapaliti. It
is a compromise, and you know, it's at that point
in time, you know, with more European descendence and so
forth than it is now. But the thing about Mandannie,
he's really the personification of New York City. You know,
(02:38:48):
I lived there for a few years and obviously spend
a lot of time there, and that to me is
this tremendous excitement because just think about this. If you're
sixteen years old and you know you're just now coming
of age, you know, politically and being engaged, or maybe
you're thinking about going to college and you are East
Asian or you are African American, but you know, you
(02:39:13):
don't necessarily, you know, are are a person of color.
I mean Mandanie is in that quotation because he's from
the continent of Africa, but you know, he obviously has
a more Caucasian like skin color.
Speaker 3 (02:39:27):
But you could look Latino. You know, he has a way.
You know, he could be Portuguese, he could be Greek, American,
it could be a whole sew of things. And that
to me makes him the man of the people.
Speaker 15 (02:39:41):
And he's willing to fight for everyone on the issue
of rent, on the issue of healthcare, on the issue
of cost of groceries, and that is an exciting thing.
And I just really think that that's a jolt that
this party needs. And I think that it is really
exciting the number one media market to have somebody like that.
(02:40:01):
Your thoughts on the hopeful.
Speaker 21 (02:40:04):
New mayor everything, yeah, everything he said. And of course
the election is eight days from today, the day when
all the votes will be tallied up, and by evening
we should have a winner. And things are certainly pointing
to the thought that it will be so Ramandani, and
he'll be if he is elected, he'll be at least
(02:40:26):
a third I think self described socialist mayor of New
York that comes to mind. Maybe there are others, but
Fiorello LaGuardia was a self described socialist, is generally considered
the greatest New York mayor of the modern era. Right
and and of course he was a people.
Speaker 4 (02:40:44):
I know he was.
Speaker 21 (02:40:45):
He was a mayor during the Roosevelt era and actually
a little bit before. I think, of course Roosevelt was
a governor of New York at the time, and and
I think you remember you followed the kid mayor.
Speaker 3 (02:40:58):
Well, I think he stayed.
Speaker 15 (02:40:59):
I think he was there in the forties when Roosevelt
was president, because I remember him getting involved. I think
in the whole African American the ability to bring Jackie Robinson.
Speaker 21 (02:41:12):
There were no terminents. He was mayor for a long time,
and then then Lindsay in the seventies. They spoke about
socialism in one city in the early seventies. He was
a Republican. Both Laguardian and Lindsay were Republicans, and while
LaGuardia and mom Nannie are better known as socialists, Linsey
didn't run away from the term and he I think
he breaks it to a degree. And of course there
(02:41:34):
were many great mayors in Milwaukee. Comes to mind the
Sewer socialist mayors of Milwaukee for decades there and they
would win the best mayors in the country. And so
you know, I think I think.
Speaker 15 (02:41:45):
There's a difference between a socialists that you know that
goes the Stalin route and a democratic socialist that Bernie Sanders.
So I mean there's you know, but this is what
the Republicans do. They can play games, you know, all
of the same boat. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, it's
you know, they're like three thousand miles.
Speaker 21 (02:42:05):
As the American social democratic left or Democratic Socialists left,
or even those or even left wing of the New
Deal Coalition long ago rejected Stalinism in all of it,
you know, everything about no free speech, no civil liberties, no,
you know, uh that we have being in open society
(02:42:28):
with honest journalism. The left in America does not promote
anything at all resembling Stalinism and the last vestiges of it.
We're in some of the fringe radical groups of the
late sixties early seventies, and since that time it's all
but disappeared from the American left, and with socialism coming
back in style in this case thanks to PDA, because
(02:42:49):
we drafted Blernie Sanders to run for president and he
revived the term in American politics because he always was
known as a socialists. There's nobody who's more of an
open society, pro free speech constitutionalist than Bernie Sanders and
so exactly.
Speaker 15 (02:43:05):
Well, I mean, you know, I mean, I mean basically,
if he wanted to, Trump could play the role of Stalin,
you know, to the right.
Speaker 3 (02:43:13):
Uh you can you do anything different? Really? Is the
fact that uh, you know, they both didn't believe in
civil liberties, the civil rights, human rights. Uh you know
how many people that Stalin killed? I mean Trump's crit
he hasn't done that, but he's he's playing around with
it and toying around with it tragically.
Speaker 21 (02:43:31):
Is the fact go kill people like me and you actually.
Speaker 3 (02:43:35):
Right, no, you know that is the reality unfortunately, but
you know to me, but you know, it goes right
back to what FDR FDR was doing and what you
and Harvey K and others.
Speaker 15 (02:43:52):
On trying to bring back the Second Bill of Rights,
which to me is the big thing. You know, one
of our great callers, Tom from the great City of
Los Angeles. You know, if he's listening, he would understand
what I'm about to say. If you follow the FDR roadmap,
you know I was going to get a you know,
an artist. I can't afford a large one, but you know,
(02:44:13):
you know a good artist who can.
Speaker 3 (02:44:15):
Basically put together an FDR portrait with a roadmap and
you know, Highway one or whatever it is.
Speaker 15 (02:44:22):
And I think basically any Democrat from Gavin Newsom who's
got the fighter in him, which we desperately need, and
I think the communicator which we also desperately need. You know,
whether it's him, you see Harris is announced, I think
that would be a mistake. But if she was a nominee,
you know, you can look at PRITZKERR, you can look
at a whole slew of others.
Speaker 3 (02:44:42):
But in my view, I think that there is a real.
Speaker 15 (02:44:49):
Understanding, a real understanding that if you go the route
of FDR, you know it's it is.
Speaker 3 (02:44:59):
If it's not paved in gold, is pretty damn close.
Because look at what he achieved and every race I
keep telling people this, it was a blowout. This we
was not fifty one forty nine and we're counting, you know,
chads like we did in two thousand. This was I
bring on your enemies out, defeat them, get out of
(02:45:19):
my way.
Speaker 15 (02:45:20):
We want social security, we want unemployment, we want WPA,
and we're gonna have a second Bill of Right.
Speaker 3 (02:45:26):
So if I live, and unfortunately tragically he did not.
Speaker 15 (02:45:29):
So that's what I think is so missing in the
language and the communication style. I mean, he went on
radio because they didn't really have TV at that point
in our history, you know, and did it and I
love that, And that's what I think is really missing.
Speaker 3 (02:45:45):
It's too much this nonsense, you know.
Speaker 12 (02:45:48):
And and.
Speaker 15 (02:45:50):
I hate to pick on John Carry because he's been
on the show and he's good man.
Speaker 3 (02:45:53):
But the line that I use, you know, as I
voted for it before I voted against it, Well, what
the hell does that mean? Before? You know? I mean,
if you follow politics, you understand that. But if the
guide down the street, or you know, the woman who's
you know, serving food at the local restaurant, you know
(02:46:14):
she's gonna say what So you oh, I see, you
voted for the allowance of George W. Bush to get
us into war before you realize how bad it was,
so then you voted against. I get it. But look
how long I took me to explain that. That's what
(02:46:34):
I'm talking about.
Speaker 21 (02:46:35):
Well, you know, actually I want to time in on
two people you mentioned just a few moments ago, because
tomorrow in Politico there'll be an article about a PDA
project in the state of Illinois, and I should be expecting.
I'll be quoted in the article from Politico, and it
is a middle ofvation campaign calling on the state legislature
(02:46:58):
and Governor pitt to redraw the congressional maps in Illinois.
And of course that's to do as Gavin Newsom has done.
Christ has been someone on the fence on this, but
right now the tide is in our favor, the favor
in the favor of what Pea is proposing. There was
a little bit of worry among some communities about you know,
(02:47:21):
lost seats, but Robin Kelly has come forward and is
supporting it. It looks like we have the momentum. So
look for that in Politico and if you're in the
state of Illinois, and I think also if you're outside
the state of Illinois, you know, chime in here, because
of course it's a national issue. We need to beat
back the jerry mandering effort to steal the twenty twenty
six House elections by the Republican Party. Democrats would not
(02:47:43):
be doing this, you know. Obviously I'm very active inside
the Democratic Party and the debate inside the party, but
you know, people should know across the board, Democrats have
overwhelmingly supported that congressional maps should be drawn by independent council,
not almost No Republican has supported that in the last
(02:48:04):
couple of decades in the House of Represents.
Speaker 3 (02:48:06):
And by the way, you know, you know who's a
phony two is Arnold Schwarzeneger.
Speaker 15 (02:48:10):
You know he went on yesterday, you know, the desperate
sound of another guy like Andrew Cmo, you know, fading
from the scene.
Speaker 31 (02:48:18):
You know all this, Oh, we don't, we don't think
the Democrats are going to do this again. We got
to talk about the deficit. All the deficit is the problem.
Come on, you know that's the problem.
Speaker 15 (02:48:31):
People are in the streets, they're waiting in food lines,
federal workers, and the deficits the problem.
Speaker 3 (02:48:36):
This guy's out to lunch, you know, overpaid actors.
Speaker 21 (02:48:42):
Trump is just the data came out. Trump has blown
up the deficit exactly. So Arnold to check out the
facts before he opens his mouth. And yeah, I mean,
here's a guy, macho guy, sees the lure of Trump.
He's not on the Trump chain, he's not getting any
attention anymore. And yeah, this is what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (02:49:00):
It's pathetic and really is fan sad too.
Speaker 21 (02:49:03):
Because he had initially been outspoken against Trump.
Speaker 3 (02:49:07):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I thought he saw the light.
Speaker 15 (02:49:11):
Talking with Alan Minsky here on the Jeff Santos Show,
eight three three five four five five three three three
is the phone number to join us. One of the
things that that I saw, uh, And we we're talking
with with Gary South, the political consultant, Democratic strategists and
worked with Gray Davis, you know, three successful times when
(02:49:33):
he ran for office tenant governor, governor.
Speaker 3 (02:49:37):
One of the things that you know, he was pointing out.
Speaker 15 (02:49:39):
Is all the poll numbers are are are looking really good,
and I think this bodes well for progressives in a
great state of California, which of course you reside in.
You know, the number for the congressionals next year are
fifty for the Democrats, forty one for the Republicans. For
the twenty twenty six House numbers, you know, a CBS
(02:50:02):
poll showed at sixty two thirty eight for Prop fifty.
Speaker 3 (02:50:07):
And again, Alan, I'm wondering.
Speaker 15 (02:50:10):
You know, in in your calls to in your forum,
which graciously invited me last Sunday and in a great time,
and we had on the candidate, mister Pinsley, on on
the show on Friday. By the way, Uh, he was fantastic,
really good candidate for the people of Pennsylvania. But I'm
wondering if people understand what is happening in your in
(02:50:33):
your not your native state and grew up in Missouri,
but you're now a state that you are a resident
in California, that this boat so well for Democrats in
the other forty nine. You know, the great PD America,
Progressive Democrats of America. Talk to me about how you're
(02:50:54):
trying to educate the rest of the nation and how Democrats,
you know, from the DNC on down, have to really
spread the message here about what has happened.
Speaker 3 (02:51:04):
And you know, I was talking to mill Poindexter as
a DNC member. You know, you got to start doing
this post. You know, November fifth, you know, the day
after hopefully big victories for the Democrats and governor's races
Pennsylvania Supreme Court, et cetera plus Prop fifty that you
know you've got to be.
Speaker 15 (02:51:22):
Saying, you know, look, this is what Gavin Newsom did.
He fought back, he communicated the message, he won big.
We gotta do the same thing going forward.
Speaker 21 (02:51:31):
Your thoughts, well, Newsom is a Newsom is a very
very detail oriented politician, and so he has I mean,
you know, I drove up here from Los Angeles and
on the ninety nine. Actually I'd been driven on that
road in years, and it's plastered. The farms go right
up to that road. It's basically parallels the Interstate five
(02:51:52):
going south and north, but it's more east in the
central center of the Central Valley, and all of the
funders are posting up. He signed against Newsom and against
Prop fifty. In that case we will see a fourth
Prop fifty things. But Uson has a relationship to all
of these businesses. They and it's almost dynamic economy of
any province or.
Speaker 3 (02:52:10):
State in the world.
Speaker 21 (02:52:11):
And uh, you know, he knows how it all operates.
And and you know what he is always looking to
do is to create an environment which is very dynamic
for business, good for workers. He pushes for higher pay
for workers, supports the unionization and and and you know,
tries to balance out and this absolutely and you know,
(02:52:35):
as you know, Jeff, this is what the fourth largest
economy in the world, so that Esse is almost the
most significant part of the date in terms of balancing
economic factors.
Speaker 5 (02:52:44):
And and he does that.
Speaker 21 (02:52:45):
And yeah, but I think I think the thing that
the Democrats have to do is, yes, take up the
page for Gavin Newsom. Have to do with the fact
that though they complain about California agriculture has of course
continue to survive. And that is not the case to
the people and the workers and the population across rural
and small town of America. It's maasically been single part
(02:53:08):
you rely only so with the Republican right exactly. And
we need to get in there and say, just like FDAR,
did we have the better policies with the economic welfare
of a rural and small town of America. End of
sentence and of sentence, And it's the cruit and here
they are. And also, you know, don't condescend in terms
(02:53:30):
of our cultural communications to working class people out across
the country. But the great Big and PA where the
I'm the co author and was the fact the spark
of the idea for a rural New Deal proposal with
the Rural of and Bridge initiative. Nation Magazine has been
supporting it. Anthony Flackavano is the brains down the detail
of the project. I know that for sure, Anthony is amazing.
(02:53:53):
But we were going to produce this because you drive
across rural and small town of America, people are not
happy with the state of society. The Republicans have not
been rooming for decades. Yeah, there is a space there.
Speaker 3 (02:54:03):
Look at what they did from on, you know, I
mean the controlled of the House and mostly the Senate
in that window to two thousand and six. Before that,
they had you know, back to back presidencies and Reagan
and Bush.
Speaker 15 (02:54:20):
You know, I mean this is this is a Republican country,
and what has happened here and we, you know, thankfully
Obama to a lesser extent, Clinton and Biden, you know,
pushed back, you know, and the Biden Bernie example is
a perfect analogy that they did some great things together,
the Progressive Moderate coalition, and that should also be part
(02:54:41):
of this going forward.
Speaker 3 (02:54:42):
But to me, that's the case, you know, I got
in my hand. We have been doing this for a while.
Speaker 15 (02:54:49):
Is my coffee situation, Duncan Donuts coffee seven dollars a
month ago at the local grocery store here lessens and
now it's fourteen dollars.
Speaker 5 (02:54:59):
Thank you.
Speaker 15 (02:54:59):
The Trump tariff, anti Brazil, anti ja silva in Brazil
because he wants to get Falcon arrow, I don't know,
out of jail maybe, but the point is another dictator
and friends. So this is this is why Democrats need
to really focus on the economic issues like FDR did,
and you know, and then another piece of the puzzle there.
Speaker 3 (02:55:18):
And including our good friend FDR in it. You know,
it's not that hard. It's all right there and you
know you're so right. Well, there may have in Illinois too, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 21 (02:55:31):
The Democratic Party and the Democratic Party is the constitutionalist party.
If you poll Americans, do you want the United States
to remain having the highest law of the land be
the Constitution in the Amendments of the United States of America,
You're gonna get five people say yes.
Speaker 16 (02:55:50):
It's now.
Speaker 21 (02:55:53):
Can be laid out that the two major parties in
the country, one of them un equipment with supports the Constitution,
the other is running rough shot over it. And here
in Jamie Raskins is of course, the central organizing figure.
Tip of the hat to Al Green. Tip of the
hat to the great radical lawyer John Bomafaz constitutional lawyer
for laying out every point on this every day Trump
(02:56:16):
just I mean, look, you know, people do say in
the Democratic Party got to focus on affordability taking a
page from Mom Danny. Yes, of course we have to
focus on economics. People can walk into come at the
same time. And the seven million people out in the
streets on No King's Day, they weren't there for affordability.
They were very few of them were. They were there
for No Kings. They were there to protect the constitution
(02:56:36):
and have an open, free society with a nonest democracy.
And that's what those demonstrations were about. And the Democratic
Party have to not just own that position by mid
twenty twenty six, they have to own it like it's
just nobody can deny it. And if you're going to
sit there and say you're supporting Trump and the Republican Party,
look in the mirror, because you want to live in
(02:56:57):
authoritarian society where your voice, your free speech is not respected.
Only the democratic right between the two partners.
Speaker 15 (02:57:05):
I want, I want to go to John in Minnesota. Sorry, Ali,
you want to finish your thought.
Speaker 21 (02:57:13):
Oh no, the DNC is coming to La December eleventh
to thirteenth.
Speaker 5 (02:57:17):
And awesome, it'll be fun.
Speaker 3 (02:57:19):
That'll be fun.
Speaker 15 (02:57:20):
All right, Let's go to John. It's about about thirty seconds.
If you can John question or comment for Alan Minsky.
Speaker 5 (02:57:31):
I really don't have any comments. I'm just listening.
Speaker 3 (02:57:34):
Okay, Well, thank you very much, appreciate it.
Speaker 22 (02:57:36):
John.
Speaker 3 (02:57:37):
Final final thoughts if you can. Alan, do you sense that.
Speaker 15 (02:57:48):
The majority of Democrats King Jeffrey's coming out from Mondannie,
that they understand what mont Donnie has done. They understand
what Newsom is doing in terms of communication, in terms
of what he's doing California. I mean, it just seems
to me that there are people outside of DC that
really get this. Mean Bernie and AOC are there and
others too, but I think that the outside message is
(02:58:12):
one that's working.
Speaker 21 (02:58:16):
By the way, I thought everything you said about Mamdani
was beautiful, and I would say that, yes, it's New
York City. Yes, there's not a political cliche in America
that says as New York City goes, so it goes
the country. Quite the opposite usually, but in this case,
I think it again, like Barack Obama's two runs for president,
in particularly the first one, there's a majority of this
country he wants to embrace the absolute beautiful diversity of
(02:58:39):
this country and to have a mother was born in Uganda.
His father was a radical historian at Columbia University, a
controversial place these days, being in the mayor of a city.
I think it's beautiful and I think there's just a
that's a great thing about America. It's a great thing
about New York City. And look, the dynamism in the
(02:59:00):
economy over the last forty years has come out of
the region of California. I'm in southern California where I
live normally gonna run Allen not from US seventy Valley,
But hey, you take care.
Speaker 15 (02:59:12):
Here yourself, so he knows about he does. Take care
of yourself. On the way back, my friends, LA be safe.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 3 (02:59:22):
Thank you, man.
Speaker 15 (02:59:23):
I want to thank Kevin for producing this broadcast, and
help from Freddie.
Speaker 3 (02:59:26):
And the gang in South Florida and all of our
great eighteen folks. Keep on fighting peacefully until tomorrow.
Speaker 15 (02:59:33):
My name is Jeff Santo's and right now it's my
time to say I gotta go.
