will decide whether to redraw their congressional maps. That'll probably
mean five more seats in Congress for Democrats. Former Vice

to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Flags
are flying at half staff at the White House, and

(00:46):
snap benefits.
Speaker 2 (00:47):

going to take some time to receive this money because
the Democrats have forced the administration into a very untenable position.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Press Secretary Caroline Levitt clarified a truth social post made

be paid until Democrats reopened the government. She said the
President was referring to not wanting to tap into an
emergency fund any further to pay snap benefits. Funding for
the food assistance program ran out Saturday. If Transportation Secretary

a mid sweep tonight in all the elections across this
great country of ours. Coming you lie from the South coast.
A happy Tuesday to you all. I hope you had
a chance to go ahead and vote. Please do over
(07:29):
my right shoulder, I guess is the American flag that
gives us the opportunity to vote for our leaders, not
have them shove down our throat like one party wants
to do currently. So we are hopeful that it'll be
a big winds across the country from coast to coast,
and we're gonna be talking about that in our commentary today.
(07:52):
The elections in California and New York City, with of
course the newest rising political star in the country, maybe
in the world, in Mandani. Of course, the very close races.
It seemingly is close in New Jersey, although it could
be it could be that a lot of people who
have doubted Miss Merrill may very well be surprised that
(08:15):
she is coming on strong in the final week in
the race. And New Jersey Governor, and of course Spanberger
in Virginia. And we'll see what happens in the Pennsylvania
Supreme Court races, these retention court races, which are very weird,
and hopefully they can I think they have a five
to two lead right now, if they can hold on
to that, or you know, even if they lose one,
(08:38):
then you still have a four to three. So we'll
see what happens there in Pennsylvania. The big news for
the Jeff Santo Show is we're going to be live
tonight all over throughout the state of the Golden State
of California, from the Mexican border through our great friends
at KABCAM seven ninety in Los Angeles. It goes from
(09:00):
the Mexican border all the way north basically about Oregon
at least reading California, and of course east to Reno,
Nevada through the auspices of KSFO, and we thank our
friends at Cumulus Radio for pulling this together for us.
It's an opportunity that we're going to get next week
(09:21):
as well from seven to eight pm, both on KABC
as well as KSFO. It covers the entire state, folks,
So if you're in Sacramento, Silicon Valley, San Jose catches
on KSFO. If you're in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange
County catches on KABC. All those are posted on our website.
We thank Rocky and Alley and the rest of the
(09:42):
team there about all the great work that's being done.
I urge you to call in tonight if you are
from California primarily, but if you are from outside of California,
you can also join us again an eight three to
three five four five five three three three just a
(10:04):
little peek into who we're going to be talking to tonight,
But let me first give you the show today and
then I'll give you tonight in a minute. Okay, So
tonight today, we are going to be talking to John
Nichols at three forty five Eastern time, That, of course
(10:25):
is twelve forty five Pacific time. At the top of
the hour at four oh six one o six Pacific
is Melissa Tomlinson. At four thirty three Eastern time, we're
going to be talking to our good friend Jerry austin
one thirty three Pacific, and we're going to replay the
(10:47):
conversation we had when Melissa Thomas and a badass teacher.
She not only is concerned about education, but today, as
a New Jersey resident, she doesn't want to see a
Republican in there, and we're going to be talking to
her about the governor's race in New Jersey. So Melissa
will be on at five oh six replayed, and then
at five thirty three a very special guest, the number
(11:08):
three person in the Democratic House leadership, Pete agiliar He
is a Congressman from the great sam Bernardino. We thank
Mark and this team at CACAA for making this happen
and very excited about talking to Congressman agili Are. Coming
up at five thirty Eastern now for tonight's show, we
(11:29):
are going to replay the interview with Congressman agili Are,
and we're also going to be talking to the head
of the California Teachers Association, mister Goldberg, and then Gary
South will wrap it up. We're trying to get some
other big name guests in the first few minutes. We'll
(11:51):
let you know about that on our website. And I
ask you, particularly if you're outside of California tonight, to
go to the Jeff Santo Show dot com and you
can check out all of the issues, all of the
things going on. That is the best way for you
to follow us tonight. Again, that is seven to eight
(12:11):
Pacific time, ten to eleven, ten to eleven Eastern time.
If you're in the Central time zone, that is nine
o'clock and so forth and so on again, folks. We're
very excited about the opportunity to do this on KBC
(12:33):
and KSFO. We think many of the folks there, including
Larry and the team, and in California at Cumulus Radio. Okay,
I want to get into a couple of things, but
I want to also reach out to our our friends
in Boston at w c A P slash Lowell slash
(12:57):
New Hampshire. We are going to be focusing on a
lot of issues that in the next you know, a
week or two that have been periculating in Massachusetts, so
we're very excited about that. We're also trying to get
mister Pappus on from New Hampshire. He's running to replace
(13:19):
the seat that Jean Shaheen had represented so well for
the people in New Hampshire for a long time, and
that's going to be a very tight race in New Hampshire,
which we're going to be following. So those are just
things coming up for those of you who are listening
to us today on a M nine to eighty w
c AP, shout out to Sam and the Gang, and
of course I'll ask Kevin to put up the text line,
(13:42):
the Milltown text line as well, if you want to
go ahead and text does today as well. We'll put
that up in the left hand corner of the screen
and I'll give it out in a minute or two
verbally for those who are listening across the country and
k c AA and and of course in the great
(14:02):
state of New Jersey, we're we're alive today and we
thank Taylor and who was on yesterday of course, the
great program director there. And we're also on in New
York City, particularly in the west side, you know, Midtown, Manhattan,
all the way up following the river, the Hudson River,
you can and you can get in the Bronx and
into obviously Harlem into the Bronx and you can listen
(14:24):
there in New York. And of course massive race for
Mandani and the City of New York, and that could
be a massive change as well. Now I want to
make a couple of things clear here. We are, you know,
(14:46):
hopefully looking to expand nationwide, but California is going to
be critical and we'll talk to our good friend, mister
ugly Are. He's got a great team working around him.
And one of the things that is going to be
important is that if the Prop fifty, which you know,
(15:06):
looks like it's going to win by double digits, they're
gonna be five races that the Democrats can win. But
they're not going to be easy. These are you know,
incumbents who may may run or may not decide to
run in these new races. For next year, you're going
to be you know, hearing a lot of new names.
(15:28):
But we're going to be there, and we look to
be there over the next year. And we're getting very
excited about the three stations that we're on now k
c AA and of course serves as our hub there
because we're live and of course, you know, thanks again
to to Cumulus on the replay shows. So we're looking
to keep the Tuesday Night Live going forward if everything
(15:53):
works itself out. So that's sort of where we are
going post election day. But let me tell you about
what today means from my perspective, and then we'll open
up the phone lines at eight three three five four
five five three three three. So here here is the
the gist of it. I think Gavin Newsom is going
(16:15):
to come out of this looking like the as he
is now, probably as the nominee for the country. They're
going to be a lot of people who are going
to be looking at Mandani as the future of the
Demo of the Democratic Party. But again, he can't run
for president unless you changed the laws, which frankly, that
(16:35):
would be a mistake. We do not want to have
people coming in from all over the world that will
utilize that, you know, to take over. We already have
one guy who was born here who was already trying
to take over. So I don't think we're going to
change that law. But the other point of it is,
(16:56):
and it's too bad in some ways because you know,
there are some people like Jennifer gri and Home and
Mamdani and others who who would be good presidents. But
it's I think it's a protection that we need. Okay,
So Mandannie's gonna get a lot of press, a lot
of people despise him, a lot of the right wing
media hate him. Trump despises him, calls him a communists,
(17:16):
all that stuff. Well, the point is this, he is
basically echoing FDR in helping people with their cost of living,
rents too damn high, you know, feeding the folks. That's
why he's talking about this idea that's very controversial about
(17:39):
government owned stores like bodega's in New York. I lived
in New York City in the early part of the
twenty first century in on one and O two, and
I used to go to the bodegas, you know, a
couple of times a week for groceries because they're really
what then the massive you know, grocery store chains, we're
really in the sub They really wasn't much there in
(18:02):
Manhattan anyways, and presumably throughout the Borrows. Now well, it
has changed in twenty years. But my feeling is that
there is a number of ways to improve it the
bodega experience, because he's a small independently owned they've become
more and more smaller, mini not chains, but they're you know,
(18:24):
owned by maybe a family or they own several of
them throughout the borough of Manhattan. So maybe there's a way,
you know, that government can play a role. And that's
going to be very interesting to see how it goes out.
But the central principle of Mamdani is to help those
who need it the most. If you are trying to
(18:45):
pay four thousand dollars a month for a one bedroom
apartment and you're making you know, sixty even eighty thousand
dollars a year, and you get kids, even if it's
this one child, you got yourself for real major problem.
Even if you're single with no kids, that's still you know,
a big chunk. So Louis I look at this, is
(19:09):
that he is by far, along with Bernie Sanders, you know,
the most understanding communicating the ideas that a lot of
people who are working class Americans, you know who you know,
barely get by, have a little savings but not much,
some don't have any, and he really is a savior
(19:32):
for them. He can enact his legislation, he's going to
have to get help from the state legislature, not always
easy in New York, even though it's a progressive state.
So I think he's going to be fascinating. But because
he can't run for president, you've got to keep your
eye in Gavin Newsom equally incredible communicator and obviously he
(19:53):
has led the largest state in the country and what
the fifth largest economy in the world, So you know
those are going to be the two winners, I believed
later tonight and into tomorrow. But you know, don't discount
the role of two former colleagues of Congress Monagai are
who we're going to be talking to a little bit later,
(20:15):
both Mss Cheryl in New Jersey and Spanberger in Virginia.
They could play very key roles here and how they move,
you know, in my opinion, in a center left direction
is going to be very interesting because they're going to
obviously be under a lot of pressure from both New
York and Washington media. Uh, just stay right in the
(20:37):
middle and you know, become more middle of the road. Look,
you don't win by being middle of the road. You've
got to be bold. Now you can actually do things.
The former New York Senator Daniel Patrick Monaghan said, you know,
you can't have everything right away, so you do it incrementally.
So if there are things that both span Berger and
(21:00):
and Miss Cheryl want to do that are bold, maybe
it's revolving around healthcare and revolving around housing issues, they
can do it, maybe not as fast as Mandani is
looking to do it, but again he's an executive that
has to work with his as a mayor, municipal mayor
with the governor. The other folks are governors, but they
(21:22):
also need to deal with legislators, a legislature that can
also put a clamp on things. So there's a lot
of give and take here. So Mamdani maybe doing one
thing and then you have both Cheryl and Spanberger doing another.
So and it may may look like one it is
going faster than the other. But again, as long as
(21:46):
their goal there north Star is the same, health care
for all, education for all. And again they may have
to rely two three years down in the line until
a Democratic president gets in, who can obviously do this
with more money in federal government. So there's a lot
there going on. But I'm very impressed with all of
the Democratic candidates that are running, and we shall see,
(22:08):
you know, if they decide to move in a progressive
populist direction, which is what I call myself. And you've
got to be careful on how you communicate your message
because the other side is there just to destroy it.
That's all they do. They don't want to govern. Look
at the mess the Republicans have done, going back to
(22:30):
Herbert Hoover. I mean, you know, yes, Eisenhower, yes, you know,
there were some things that Reagan did in his first
two years or so. But after that, you know, Reagan
blew the economy up. He basically left George H. W.
Bush a disaster, which led to Clinton, and then of
(22:52):
course you had George H. W. Bush's son, George W.
Was a disaster. The worst economy we've had, you know
since of course Trump's for well, yeah, the worst economy
going back to Hoover, first Republican with all this, So
outside of Eisenhower, who kept the FDR train moving along
(23:13):
with the ninety percent tax rate on the one percent
and everybody else, you know, that to me is about
the only example of Republicans you know, knowing how to govern.
And Eisenhower really was a was a Democrat, a military guy,
didn't really have much policy background, but they continued what
(23:34):
Roosevelt had built in the thirties and forties. So the
way I see this, Democrats need to stick to with
who they are fall the FDR path he has built
it there. If you stay with that, you know, Bernie
Sanders has altered some of those things. You know, you
can move in that direction. And again, I go back
(23:57):
to what I've been saying over the last few days
and This is going to be an imperative for those
governors in New Jersey and Virginia, and I think they'll
both win tonight. Remember what Biden and Bernie did in
early twenty twenty one, where Biden's pull numbers were about
sixty percent approval. He didn't even come close to that
(24:18):
after that first year. The American Rescue Plan was basically
an alliance between Bernie Sanders, progressive folks and our friends
and the administration, and Joe Biden. People like Jared Bernstein
on the economic front. Many others Heather Bouchet All who
worked closely on the economic front and were part of
(24:40):
the American Rescue Plan that kind of fell apart. It's
like build beck Better fell apart mainly because of conservative Democrats,
Gottzeimer and others, Mansion and other Cinema. Thankfully two of
the three are gone and Godzeimer's hopefully his role would
be diminished. Yes, I know he's from New Jersey. The
point is this, if you look at where the Democratic
(25:05):
Party is today, I think we've got to be very optimistic,
very optimistic about where I think things are going, because
the energy is with the progressives, it's not with moderates
and that is a good sign. That's a good sign
for the Democratic Party going forward. All right, let's open
up our lines and that's eight three three five four
(25:28):
five five three three three. It's time to go to
Minnesota and talk to good friend John from the Twin Cities.
Go right to head, John, what's on your mind? Happy
election day. I hope you voted today.
Speaker 15 (25:42):
Yes, I did, and it'll be probably a close selection
for my candidate. But I'm confident that with the rank
choice voting that he will win or at least unseat
the present mayor and then uh, my city council person.
Speaker 14 (26:02):
I hope he gets in there.
Speaker 16 (26:04):
I think he will.
Speaker 17 (26:06):
But I wanted to say I'm very happy with Mondani
and I hope he he just you know, wipes the
floor with the with the others, uh and wins.
Speaker 18 (26:20):
You know.
Speaker 16 (26:21):
I mean, I.
Speaker 17 (26:22):
Think that will be you know, so uplifting to the
progressive movement, and you know, yeah, I think it's a
great thing. And I think the proposition in California. Of course,
I hope that wins, and I've helped to uh campaign
for that. It looks like it's probably going to carry out.
Speaker 14 (26:50):
Yeah, no doubt. By the way, the the and this
is for a great team down in Florida. The Milltown
Plumbing text line is nine seven eight four five for
forty nine eighty if you could lock that in, Kevin
going forward nine seven eight four or five for forty
(27:10):
nine eighty. So, if you have a text you want
to send to us on any of the election news
going on election day stuff, if you have a thought,
please do so, and you can text us again nine
seven eight four five four forty nine eighty. We'll place
that up For those who are viewing us on the
Jeff Santos Show video portion Again, we urge you to
(27:34):
go to the streaming on the website, the Jeff Santos Show,
the website, you know whatever, and so forth. Sorry to
interrupt your train of thought there, John, I will also
hold you over too. But I think one of the
things that's going to be fascinating, and it's just to me,
a critical piece of this is how Democrats move forward
(27:58):
talking about issues that he has brought up that Mondanie
is bringing up economic populism. And because this again goes
a lot in line, it's FDR, it's affordability. You know,
this is not a time to be cautious. You know,
you don't want to be stupid or reckless, but you know,
(28:21):
if you see an issue that people are concerned about.
I mean, right now, there are people in food lines
that used to make you know, eighty grand, maybe one
hundred grand a year, or federal workers as you know, John,
because there are in Minneapolis. And I think you have
to be able to tell, if you're a Democrat, you
have to say that things are not good financially and
it's only going to get worse. And as I reach
(28:42):
here for the Dunkin Donuts bag, again, this is only
the beginning, this is only a month ago, goes from
seven dollars to fourteen dollars here in Massachusetts where Duncan
Donuts was founded, and you know, you can't continue to
have this and this garbage that the president is pushing with.
You know, oh, well, the tarriffs are going to be fantastic.
(29:04):
And if they if they don't pass, the Supreme Court
doesn't give me this this win. You know, I don't
know what he's doing, pressure wise to put it on
the Supremes, but you know, this is this is an
important part of how Democrats talk about the economic affordability
and use utilize this. John, I'll bring you back into
the next segment. But I just think that that is
(29:27):
really problematic. You know, if you don't utilize what you
have in front of you, which the economy is, you know,
you can't even get coffee. And again, as our friend,
and it's on the website the Jeff Santos Show. Uh,
what we talked about with Lee Blackman, They're going from
Starbucks lines to soup lines. That's something that Democrats should
(29:51):
also continue to talk about. We'll be right back. It's
the Jeff Santos Show.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
You're listening to the Inland t NBC News Radio. I'm
Chris Carracio.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Political analysts say today's elections could have major implications for
next year's midterms. In New York City's mayoral race, Democratic
as Socialists oranmm Donnie maintains his commanding lead in the
polls over Independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Governor's
races are on the line in New Jersey and Virginia. Meanwhile,
voters in California will decide whether to redraw their congressional maps.
(30:25):
That'll probably mean five more seats in Congress for Democrats.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age
of eighty four. His family announced his passing today, saying
he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and
vascular disease. Flags are flying at half staff at the
White House, and the White House says it's complying with
court orders regarding SNAP benefits.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
The recipients of the estaff benefits need to understand it's
going to take some time to receive this money because
the Democrats have forced the administration into a very untenable position.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Press Secretary Caroline Levitt clarified a truth social post made
by President Trump this morning, saying the benefits would not
be paid until Democrats reopened the government. She said the
President was referring to not wanting to tap into an
emergency fund any further to pay SNAP benefits. Funding for
the food assistance program ran out Saturday. If Transportation Secretary
Sean Duffy says sections of the country's airspace may be
(31:18):
closed if the shutdown drags on. He warned there will
be mass chaos, including mass flight delays and cancellations, if
the shutdown continues in the next week.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
For the first time.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
We are hearing from a hunter who was lost for
twenty days in the Sierra National Forest. Ron Daly's truck
got stuck and he ran out of food.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Either try to walk out or you're going to sit
here and die.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
Daly's daughter Brianna made the recording as he recovers in
a hospital. The fifty five year old Fresno County man
was found by a search party. He was dehydrated and exhausted.
The Sheriff's office says more information about the circumstances of his.
Speaker 19 (31:52):
Servilinery breaking new job.
Speaker 20 (31:56):
Okay, hold on, I'm getting something carry breaking new. He's
out of California. Tonight, the results are in and voters
have just passed Prop fifty. What this is a major leader,
Donald Trump and answer to Power Elier.
Speaker 19 (32:12):
The Jolist, because this is the house Trump investigator for corruption.
Even with these capting.
Speaker 8 (32:20):
Files, you want to stick it to Trump. Vote yes
on Prop fifty.
Speaker 21 (32:23):
I hate California.
Speaker 22 (32:26):
Pro Logic radio your mind, Sprague.
Speaker 23 (32:29):
HEYMI let's commercials. That's what we need.
Speaker 24 (32:31):
A c AA love Melinda Awesome radio station, The Jeff
(33:20):
Satom the show.
Speaker 14 (33:31):
Thirty three minutes past the hour. It is the Jeff
Santa Show that you are tuned into coming to you
live from the South coast here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
With continue in our conversation with our great caller, mister
John Dee in Minneapolis. We are going to be chatting
with John Nichols and we hope to be doing that
(33:53):
at about forty five past. He's actually in an interview
with another network and soon he gets out of that
he will indeed join us. In the meantime, you can
go ahead and give us a shout at eight three
three five four five five three three three and again
you can text us as well on the Milltown hotline
(34:17):
that is also available to you, and of course you
can email me Jeff at Jeff Santos Show dot com.
That is ninety seven eight fort nine for forty eight
that is the Milltown text line. Let me bring back
John here for a second. John, I I I really
(34:38):
feel though that the Democratic Party UH is poised, you know,
to do the right thing and to be led by
you know, the likes of Gavin Newsom, of the likes
of mister Pritzker in Illinois. You know governors who you know,
won pretty handily the last time in around for governor
(35:04):
in two big states, and also the likes of Bernie
and AOC and and now Mom Donnie. So that's to
me is a good group because you're gonna have to
push the more moderate governors and you didn't need what
they did in two thousand and twenty one, Bernie pushing
Biden and his team on the American Rescue Plan. You
agree with that from your perspective.
Speaker 17 (35:28):
Yeah, absolutely, I think, yeah, I agree.
Speaker 14 (35:35):
I just I just think that that is you know,
you're going to be a narrative that you have to
keep pushing, and I think that is a really important,
you know, piece of the puzzle. And if that it happens,
then you know, will be in a in a much
(35:56):
better position, uh you know, to push. Let you know,
the other thing too, in your governor could be very
important here in walls and you know, obviously he has
national exposure because of his role as the VP on
the HIRIS ticket is the fact that you know, Democrats
can experiment at the government at the governor level, and
(36:18):
that means also Newsome in the final year and Pritzker.
These are all folks that can you know, utilize the
you know, the state that they're in because I believe
in all cases, Minnesota, Illinois, and California are all Democratic legislatures.
So you can do a lot of things to test
(36:38):
it out there to get ready for twenty twenty seven
and eventually twenty twenty nine when you have a Democratic
president hopefully a Democratic House and Senate too. So there's
a lot of the you know, a lot of the training.
The messaging is going to be really critical here, you know,
for for our friends and the Democratic Party. Final thought,
(37:04):
John h.
Speaker 17 (37:06):
Yeah, and I think Democratic Party is much more receptive
to you know, the progressive uh legislation at this point
or philosophy, and they are not you know, I mean,
I hope they're not going to crawl back into you know,
(37:28):
the middle of the road.
Speaker 18 (37:30):
Let's have Liz.
Speaker 17 (37:32):
Cheney you know, tell us how to do it kind
of because obviously, uh, that loses, you know, it just
doesn't resonate with the voters. And we meet somebody like
Mandami or Gavin Newsoen with a you know, a personality,
(37:54):
you know, he's a personality that I think people gravitate towards.
And then also you know, with the progressive agenda pushing
you know, been in that direction. I think that, you know,
we could change the Democratic Party because I think you've
(38:16):
said it many times. Jim high Power said, there's nothing
in the middle of sept dead armadillos.
Speaker 25 (38:23):
And yellow lions.
Speaker 17 (38:25):
You know it really it doesn't inspire anybody, and I
think that that's why many people have turned away from
the party. But you know, Biden was a terrible communicator,
and he did do some very dramatic things, especially supporting labor,
(38:46):
changing their National Labor Relations Boards to be much more
labor friendly. And then some of the other things that
he did during COVID that lifted children out of poverty
that now are going to not only be in poverty,
but probably be starving.
Speaker 25 (39:06):
Here soon, you know.
Speaker 17 (39:09):
And so uh, you know, those are the kind of
things that people want. But you also have to have
a person with some personality that you know, isn't you know,
Biden came out of an error of politics that was
very I mean in the Democratic Party, I guess, very
(39:29):
middle of the road and lands and you know, let's
make a deal. Oh, if you get five percent of
what you want, Okay, We're.
Speaker 14 (39:37):
Going to go home.
Speaker 17 (39:38):
It just doesn't it doesn't fly anymore. It's not going
to carry it and Mom Donnie has proved that and
I hope I guess in Seattle too, they have a
very left of center candidate like oh Ma Seta in Minneapolis. Uh,
and that's right in the heart Uh you know High
(40:02):
Sex Amazon MSN.
Speaker 14 (40:05):
And yeah, yeah, our good friend MT is actually updating
those now on that and we're gonna we're gonna try
to get that information out before the end of the show. John,
you know your your thought on this is where democrats
have to go and and if if they if they do,
they'll I think be victorious around the country. Uh. And
(40:25):
that is that is gonna be uh fantastic. Appreciate it. John. Again,
we're waiting on John Nichols, folks. If if that doesn't happen,
we're gonna give you an encore interview we did last
week with Lee Blackman. So Kevin and and Freddy I
just get ready for that in case we do not
get a chance to talk to Nichols before four pm Eastern,
(40:48):
so Kevin and Freddie can get together on on getting
that video uh to be go ready to stand by.
Uh again, We're we're at the uh mercy of our
good friends at MSNBC, who like John Nichols as much
as we do jured in a Rock.
Speaker 26 (41:10):
Israel's Nesset endorsed a twenty twenty four military funding plan
in a divisive session Wednesday with a sixty to fifty
five vote. The War Cabinet and National Unity Coalition could
disband as the right wing New Hope Party with.
Speaker 27 (41:23):
Draws as Parinet Minister Gideon Sah declared Tuesday night that
he has chosen to terminate the partnership with Israel's Blue
and White Party to re establish the right wing New
Hope faction independently because he stated the perspectives of the
right are not being heeded in the current War Cabinet.
Speaker 14 (41:38):
Tonight over the great State of California, where we'll be
talking to a lot of Democratic leaders people from the
great CTA. Of course, we're talking about the California Teachers
Association in mister Goldberg, the president of the group, will
(42:01):
be with us. Gary South, the former senior advisor to
Governor Gray Davis and the political consultant to many California
statewide office holders. And of course we'll have this interview
that we're coming up today with the fantastic Member of
Congress from Sam Bernardino, and we thank our good friend
(42:23):
market case AA for putting that together with us and
a great team that he has. That's Congressman Pete agli
Are number three in the Democratic leadership in the House,
and the Congressman from Sam Bernardino in southern California will
be replaying that tonight at about twenty past seven, and
(42:44):
that would be again in California tonight. As we as
we move along here, one of the things that I
think is going to be fascinating is that the winner
of the Democratic nomination tonight in New Jersey and again,
(43:04):
so great to be on w g H T A
M fifteen hundred. It is for me an opportunity, you know,
to talk to people in New Jersey who you know,
like people in Massachusetts. Not only do they share the
Dunkin Donuts, but the love of classic rock and many
of the things we like here in Boston. The fact
(43:27):
is is that, you know, a lot of it comes
down to economics. But again, as I mentioned yesterday to Deborahknovaca,
who was the folk who was involved with you know,
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy as a deputy chief of staff,
that in my view is a you know, tremendous insight
(43:53):
into how the state works. And as we were talking
about yesterday, you know, when you have energy concerns, which
is something that you know Cidearelli, the Republican is talking about.
But what is he going to do? What is Trump
going to do? You know, what are they going to
do for energy? What are they all of a sudden
going to tell the energy companies you're going to lower
the prices because they're one percent. Uh, These d CEOs
(44:17):
are giving a ton of money to Republicans, so please,
you know, I mean, you know, it's just just a
much of malarkey. It's good campaign fodder. You know, you
blame the other guy for the cost of you know,
your energy bill, your electric bill. But the point is
is that this is they're not going to do anything.
Republicans done nothing overall on the economy to help the
(44:40):
working class. They only help the one percent. That's where
they get the money from, and that's who they that's
who gets the benefits. That's why the tax cuts, you know,
or they're always and you know, the Bushes had their
tax cuts for the wealthy. Trump had it in the
first term, had it again. You know, they talked the
working class game, and they're good at it, you know,
give them credit, but the fact is that they do nothing,
(45:01):
absolutely nothing for those making thirty five, forty five fifty
five sixty five thousand dollars a year. Doesn't work. It
does not work. And that, unfortunately, is the reality of today.
And we see our good friend John Nichols and the
monitor there, so as soon as he's finished, we'll have
(45:22):
a chance to talk with my good friend mister Nichols
coming up. I want to say this about you know
where the and we'll get John Nichols's take on this
in a minute. The thing that I find to be
really relevant coming out of the election are going into
the election today talk about it over the next few
(45:43):
days too, is how how the voter who was independent
voted maybe for Trump. Is just this the frustration that
they may have had with the communication skills or lack
thereof of Biden, and they ever really warmed to Harris
and enough time, so they voted for Trump. These are
(46:04):
usually low information voters, independent voters who really don't understand
how government works. And again it's incumbent upon Democrats and
progressives and people like me to explain it. And the
benefits of it, and we're seeing it with the shutdown
of the federal government workers. You know, those are people
who are actually there, but there there are a lot
of there are a lot of things that people don't
(46:26):
understand what they do. And you know, whether or not
that is a park ranger or or somebody who is
involved in NASA, however it works. But these are government
agencies that can get shut down and that is really
really problematic for so many people. You don't realize who
(46:46):
it is and what it is. And I can't, for
the life of me understand why as as as a
talk show host, we can't you know, illustrate that to
communicate that a lot better than we have. Okay, let
(47:06):
me also talk a little bit about what is going on,
you know today in in California, what we have is
a California I think earthquake that is going to shake up,
you know, the state to be more progressive. There are
(47:28):
progressive candidates running for governor, like Katie Porter. There are
a lot of people in the city council in Los
Angeles and San Francisco who are very progressive. When we
look to have them on in the coming days, in
weeks there is a great bench and if you can
communicate the way that Gavin Newsom is communicating, then you
(47:51):
have a very good chance of becoming a national player
very quickly. And because of the large s, because of
the large media market in Los Angeles and to a
lesser extent San Francisco, and you know, for if you
can communicate, and again with many more options online to
(48:11):
do it. And he mentioned how Mom, Donnie, you know,
he wasn't buying a bunch of TV ad at least
not until you know recently. What he was doing. However,
he was doing his own little campaign. He going on
the bus, going to the Falaffel stand, going you know,
down the street in a taxi cab or on the subway.
And however he did things you know people would be
(48:33):
catching it up because he's a good communicator. If you're
a good communicator, you know, in this general life, you know,
if you can you know, give a speech or talk
to your students in a class, if you're a teacher,
all of these things, all of these things are are
really critical. And I think that's going to be a
big issue as we move forward over the next few years,
(48:56):
because if you can't communicate, you really shouldn't be in politics,
you know, not because your dad was a senator or
a governor or whatever. You know, that doesn't mean anything.
Or your husband or wife was a munch official, it doesn't.
You know. If you have the gift, then that's one thing,
but you can't rely on the fact because of your
last name. And that, to me is a critical component
(49:18):
of all this. We have too many times we get people, well,
we've got to give it to her because she's married
to him, and we got to give it to him
because she he was married to her, or her mother
or father was the senator or the governor. Enough of that.
What we need is people, particularly from the working class.
And we're seeing this. And yesterday we talked with our
good friend from the fantastic place of Maine and Alex
(49:45):
cites Wald about mister Planter and he's getting seven hundred
people in towns of twenty one hundred to come out
on a cold night on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you know,
in coastal Maine. And that that's that's what you need. Now.
You know, he didn't have the you know, training at
(50:05):
Harvard Law or the debate team. He was a fisherman.
I guess he still is. He is. He also was
a military guy fought for this country. So you know,
I just think it's really important to see how this goes,
and it is going to be critical and how we
(50:27):
move the ball forward to recruit candidates like that, and
that is the difference. Okay, we have connected with our
good friend, who might have just seen on another network.
He is, of course, the national affairs correspondent of The
Nation magazine, and he is all over the country today.
(50:48):
He was in New York yesterday today in California. John
Nichols joins, says, John, great to have you with us,
my friend, Thank you for joining us in You're a
very busy day and very busy week election day. It
looks good for the Democrats in a number of places.
Could be a little tighter in New Jersey or we're
in today. This is our second day on the air
in New York, New Jersey. So what's your headline as
(51:12):
we embark into the later hours here on election Day
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 28 (51:20):
I think that what you say is correct, that things
do look pretty good, and the polling data from around
the country suggests that zoron Mamdanie, it's quite quite a
bit ahead in New York, and it's had a very
strong close. I think in Virginia, Banburger, the Democratic, the
memtorial candidate, looks to be well ahead and pretty comfortable.
(51:41):
You're right, it's closer in New Jersey, and that's been
a very rough, intense race at the close, but you
still got a Democrat who is narrowly ahead, and you've
got a pretty strong Democratic organization in a lot of
communities in New Jersey.
Speaker 25 (51:57):
I think that's when we're going to be watching closely tonight. Though.
Speaker 28 (52:00):
Finally, I think that in California, where you've got Proposition fifty,
this effort to make sure that congressional seats are not flipped,
in my sense is that there's going to be a
very big victory there. You may not see all the
numbers tonight, but I suspect that's going to be a win.
(52:23):
So you have the potential, Jeff, not the certainty. We've
got to count the votes, but he has the potential
for a night where the Democrats are kind of winning
all over the country, and the message that comes from
that win is a very powerful one. It's that at
one ye're in one year after the election of Donald
Trump in an election that shocked a lot of people,
(52:45):
certainly unsettled a lot of people. That the American reaction,
the American sensibility, is one that says this shouldn't be happening.
The way Trump is governing is is unacceptable, and people
associated with him politically are going to be rejected at
the polls if that message comes through. It's a really
(53:05):
important one at this point in the debate about the
shutdown and everything else.
Speaker 14 (53:10):
And no doubt we are talking with our good friend
John Nichols here on their Jeff Santo phone number. You're
joining us eight three to three five four five five
three three three.
Speaker 29 (53:19):
John.
Speaker 14 (53:19):
You can't see it, but I have my wonderful dunkin
Donuts bag here cost seven dollars back on the fifteenth
of September. A week later it costs fourteen ninety nine.
Still is at that price today, Wow at the leading
grocery store. And I use this prop all the time
because I think it's something the Democrats should be pounding home.
(53:41):
I've given it to Congresswoman Clark to use from Massachusetts.
Of course, number two House Majority are just like minority Whip.
Hopefully majority web soon to save us all, and of
course we'll be doing it tonight when we talk to
this afternoon come up at five point thirty Eastern with
(54:02):
the congressman. Congressmen, who's number three, Congressman Pete Agliar farm
Sam Bernardino. It basically, I think this is something that
Democrats can win on, and that to me is is
going to be a very important piece of the puzzle
here to use that economic FDR roadmap to differentiate between
(54:27):
the Republicans who are always about the one percent and
I've really destroyed the economies going back to Hoover at
the end of Reagan, the two bushes, so on and
so forth. So they have a way to connect it
and contrast it. If you go the FDR route, you
can't go middle of the road muchy middle and expect
to do this Your thoughts there.
Speaker 28 (54:50):
Yeah, I think there's there's a real vital message that
can't come out of this night, and it's primarily from
New York and that as regards ro Mandani and Mamdani
started on the very fringe of that that mayoral race.
He was at about one or two percent. He did
not have a lot of support. He certainly wasn't known
(55:11):
city wide. He didn't fit the image of people who'd
been mayors in the past in a lot of ways,
and yet here he came, and he electrified the city
and I think made New Yorkers look at him and say, yes,
this is what a mayor should look like. This is
(55:31):
the person we want to have in that position. And
you said, well, how did he do that? What was
at the heart of that? It was a very focused
message that concentrated on economics and concentrated it especially on affordability,
saying that the city of New York should be affordable
for the working class people that lived there. By any measure,
(55:54):
that message and his remarkable skills as a candidate took
him from the edge of the race to the center
of it, and very probably will take him to the maryalty.
Democrats need to pay attention to that. They need to
pay attention on the core policies which are direct responses
to people's needs. Fass and free buses, rent stabilization, UH,
(56:17):
free health care or free childcare, and expanded health care
and education core messages that matter to people that they
should take away. The other thing they should take away
is the way in which the Zara Mamdani campaigned, which
is to get up very early in the morning, go everywhere,
talk to everyone, including people who might not have back
to in the primary or in the initial stages of
(56:40):
this election campaign, and to you know, keep at it
through the through the afternoon into the evening. He was
out over the weekend at one two in the morning
in the bars, and uh.
Speaker 14 (56:52):
I love it. The faith from the buses to the
bars to the subways. He's nominal. I mean, look, people
can learn a lot from him. You know, I see
all the middle of the road media folks, some old
Democratic consultants. Oh, he's not going to be the face
of the Democratic Party because he can't run for president.
But look, they's talking about fundraising. I think it's actually
(57:13):
more than fundraising. I think it's pushing the message, just
as Bernie Sanders pushed the message. I keep going back
to the idea that what happened in twenty twenty one
with Biden. He's at his highest polling percentage at sixty
sixty one percent because he worked with Bernie, brought together
that coalition of progressives and moderates on the American rescue plane,
gave people checks, you know, lowered their cost. They're housing
(57:34):
issues and so forth, and that's what occurred, and he
moved away from that, and he didn't have any help
from Mansion, Cinnamon, Gottzeimer and all that, and Bill Beckbetter
went down and of course he ended up having an
affordable the IRA, which was a little bit less than that.
Still good stuff. AOC got her environmental things going. But
still I think that to me is a model. You
(57:57):
agree with that because to me, you understand and you know,
I mean you're really you know, maybe the best journalist
understands Bernie Sanders and understands the progressive movement like no other.
I have to tell you that, that, to me is
a way to do it. So if mom, Donnie can
find you know, whether it's the governor talk full or
(58:21):
you know, some in the legislature to understand this, I
think he can he can be a major spokesman nationally. Uh,
you know, in time. It may not be right away
because he's got to you know, he has a lot
of things on his plate. But your thoughts there, I think.
Speaker 28 (58:38):
You're basically right. Look, Uh, the Democratic Party can learn
from a lot of people. And I remember, there's not
a template, there's not a cookie cutter way in which
you run in every district or or every city or
every region of country. But the thing that mom Donnie
has has shown is that if you get out there
(58:58):
and energetically focus on a set of issues, and I
think the best that they be economic issues, if you
energetically focus on them, after you really work hard, people
will start.
Speaker 25 (59:09):
To hear you.
Speaker 28 (59:10):
You can cut through the media noise, you can get
beyond the Republican propaganda or whatever disinformation is out there,
and you can get into a real conversation with people.
Remember Zorah mom Downni was a viciously and aggressively attacked
during this campaign. He didn't have a easy.
Speaker 14 (59:27):
Walk to the Mary old Way gets Trump. I got
twenty seconds.
Speaker 28 (59:32):
John, Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 29 (59:35):
Though.
Speaker 28 (59:35):
You know, if mom Donni wins this race, then I
think the evidence is that you go out there strong,
you have a very firm message, and you stick to it,
and if it's a good economic message, I think you
can cut through a lot of the noise of contemporary politics,
and not just the New York City but across the country.
Speaker 14 (59:55):
John Nichols, thank you, my friend, Nation Magazine. We'll talk
to you next Tuesday. If not sooner with all the
e going on today. Thanks man, appreciate you, Thank you too, man.
Enjoy the evening. We'll be right back, folks. It's a
Jeff Santo.
Speaker 30 (01:00:08):
Show, NBC News on CACAA Lowland, sponsored by Teamsters Local
nineteen thirty two, Protecting the Future of Working Families, Teamsters
nineteen thirty two, dot.
Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
Org, NBC News Radio. I'm Chris Carracio.
Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
Political analysts say today's elections could have major implications for
next year's midterms. In New York City's mayoral race, Democratic
as Socialists Oran mom Donnie maintains his commanding lead in
the polls over Independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Governor's races are on the line in New Jersey and Virginia. Meanwhile,
voters in California will decide whether to redraw their congressional maps.
(01:00:52):
That'll probably mean five more seats in Congress for Democrats.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age
of eighty four. His family announce is passing today, saying
he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and
vascular disease. Flags are flying at half staff at the
White House, and the White House says it's complying with
court orders regarding SNAP benefits.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
The recipients of the estaff benefits need to understand it's
going to take some time to receive this money because
the Democrats have forced the administration into a very untenable position.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Press Secretary Caroline Levitt clarified a truth social post made
by President Trump this morning, saying the benefits would not
be paid until Democrats reopened the government. She said the
President was referring to not wanting to tap into an
emergency fund any further to pay SNAP benefits. Funding for
the food assistance program ran out Saturday. If Transportation Secretary
Sean Duffy says, sections of the country's airspace may be
(01:01:44):
closed if the shutdown drags on. He warned there will
be mass chaos, including mass flight delays and cancellations, if
the shutdown continues in the next week. For the first time,
we are hearing from a hunter who was lost for
twenty days in the Sierra National Forest. Ron Dailey's truck
got stuck and heat ran out of food.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
Either try to walk out, You're going to sit here
and die.
Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Dey's daughter Brianna made the recording as he recovers in
a hospital. The fifty five year old Fresno County man
was found by a search party. He was dehydrated and exhausted.
The Sheriff's office says more information about the circumstances of
his survival will be shared after he recovers. I'm Chris
Karaghio NBC News Radio.
Speaker 10 (01:02:26):
And take a look at southern California weather. I'm Mark
Westwood here at KCAA, and well, you know, the autumn
weather is starting to finally take off, and we're transitioning
from summer to Ottomans being felt as winds pick up,
clouds increase, and temperatures start trending downward. The National the
Service says they're calling for pati lo fog and early

Speaker 23 (01:06:46):
Now here's Jeff.
Speaker 14 (01:06:58):
It is our two of the Jeff Santos Show, and
welcome to it, folks, coming you lie from the South
coast here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We're gonna be
chatting with our good friend Jerry Austin at the bottom
of the hour, the great media consultant there for Jesse Jackson.
In nineteen eighty eight, Paul Wallstone Caaren Molsey Braun major
impact on the progressive movement of the last forty years.
(01:07:22):
That'll be coming up again at four thirty three Eastern time.
Again later today, we'll be talking with the Congressman from
San Bernardino, the thirty third district in the great state
of California, and Conressman Pete agli Are at five thirty Eastern.
It's two thirty Pacific time here on the Jeff Santo Show.
(01:07:44):
But we start now in New Jersey. Of course, it's
so great to be on AM fifteen hundred WGHT, and
we're very very happy about the opportunity to do that
and to bring in somebody from that great state. Friend,
she is the executive director of the best name in politics,
bad Ass Teachers, and she is a badass and she
(01:08:07):
is Melissa Tomlinson. And she joins us from her office
usually I was going to say from her automobile, because
she's always on the run. But there you go. You
get the classroom behind you there and looking good in
the hood. Is that actually your classroom or is that
just an office area?
Speaker 7 (01:08:28):
Hi, Jack, that's my union office.
Speaker 14 (01:08:31):
Ah, very good, very good. Well, big day in New
Jersey for your union and our good friend and your
good friend and ours at Debra Cornovaca, and she was
on yesterday telling us about this race, which you know,
is close, but was still very hopeful. And I think
(01:08:52):
that is the case on the race tonight between Cinderelli
the Republican and of course miss Mikey Cheryl on the
Democratic side. What is your take? What's the excitement level
there in South Jersey for the race? I saw a
couple of your colleagues, couple of teachers actually, who were
(01:09:15):
on one of the networks earlier, and they were both
psyched about, you know, the race for governor, of course
voting for the Democrat. What's the energy level you are.
Speaker 7 (01:09:28):
Well, everybody's tired for one, but yeah, definitely a lot
of excitement. Yeah, it was a long weekend. People were
out door knocking. Obama flew in he was in Newark. Yeah,
so it's been it's been a long couple of weeks. Yeah,
but everybody's positive, right, So that's the good thing. Just
hopefully it translates to what we see in the results tonight.
Speaker 14 (01:09:51):
Well, it is going to be extremely important that we
we move this Nino on the Democratic Party's spoken Nichols
about this I think that the more they follow the
road map that began with FDR in the nineteen thirties
and continued, you know, through Truman and Eisenhower, even a
(01:10:12):
Republican Eisenhower at ninety percent tax rate, and through Kennedy
in the first couple of years of LBJ before Vietnam,
you know, threw it all out to drain. But I
really believe that what happened in the early part of
this decade in twenty twenty one, when Bernie and Biden
(01:10:33):
came together, that to me is a great combo that
led to Biden being you know, sixty percent approval rating
that first year. He later fumbled, and you know, I
think that cost the Democrats the House in twenty twenty two.
You couldn't get built back better done and became IRA.
But it was sort of you know, lesser than you
(01:10:55):
look at what span Berger if she does become governor
and looking to the excitement galore that is Mamdani is
doing in New York City, you know that the idea
of coalescing and again they don't have to work together
because it's two different states. We understand that. But to me,
(01:11:18):
if she plays the role of Biden here because she's
the chief executive of the state. He's just the chief
executive of the city. Granted, it is massive in New
York City number one, But to me, if you kind
of figure out a way to sort of capture that
energy on some of the issues, the economic issues, again,
(01:11:39):
I think that's a successful roadmap for her and for
you know, educators that you're part of that community too.
Speaker 7 (01:11:46):
Your thoughts there, yeah, I mean, there's definitely a lot
of opportunities right now to move the needle in the
Democratic Party, which is what we need. We've been saying
this for a number of years now. It was interesting.
I was listening to Faz Shaker this morning and they
were talking about the governor's race and what's going on,
(01:12:07):
and they did mention New Jersey, but they were relating
it to the popularity of the Democratic Party. He was asked,
you know, oh, do you think the popularity of the
Democratic Party is starting to be on the upswing again?
Question like that, and his response caused me a moment hesitation.
His response as well, I guess we'll see what happens
(01:12:29):
as a result of tonight's elections, and I really want
to caution the Democratic Party with the idea that just
because you may win elections right now doesn't necessarily mean
that people are believing in you again, so they do
need to find that formula where they're going for progressive
ideals and they are really starting to listen to the
(01:12:50):
people and to their experiences and making sure that that
is what their decision making is being based on.
Speaker 14 (01:12:57):
Well, you know, and again we're going to have to
get a new prop because we can't keep doing this
all the time. But I have my my dunkin Donuts
thing here and you know what, seven dollars to fourteen dollars,
the S and s still there. I just checked it
the other day, And to me, that is an example
that frankly is real and it's real for a lot
(01:13:19):
of people. You know, it's it's I know gas is
a little cheaper in the Northeast and it is in
other parts of the country, but you know, those are
basic needs. And if Democrats understand what the working class
is going through and stick to that, and Mandani is
talking to people, I mean, you know, not everybody has
massive buses going down you know, Fifth Avenue like New
(01:13:39):
York City does, but they have buses. You know, it
may not be a bad idea if you're a mayor
or a member of Congress, you know, to ride that
bus and to talk to the people there, you know,
I mean if you get to those folks, you know,
I mean one of the things you know, we want
to do is to talk to taxi drivers in New
York City. You know, they getting screwed because they want
(01:14:00):
to have these you know, unmanned cars they want to do.
Of course Uber has really destroyed a lot of their business.
But to me, you know, they always represent you know,
stories of people coming in and out of the big
city of New York. And that's who a lot of
our friends in the Democratic Party should be talking to.
(01:14:23):
Your thoughts and students of yours and the teachers that
your colleagues, yeah, not.
Speaker 7 (01:14:29):
Only talking to, but really taking some time to understand
what it's like to be in their shoes. Right. So,
you know, we know we have this ongoing food crisis
right now with the Snap recipients and others. Right it's
been on growing, on going even before the government shutdown.
The senator from Connecticut I think it's Senator and More
(01:14:51):
is actually living on Snap amounts for a day and
he's posting all of his meals, right, and so I
did a little bit of research, and what really struck
me was he did this when he was mayor because
he wanted to understand what his constituents were going through
on a daily basis. It wasn't just that he listened
(01:15:12):
to them and it went beyond lip service, but it
actually elevated their experiences, grew his understanding and the public's
understanding about what it was like to be in that
person's shoes. I think more of that needs to be done.
Speaker 14 (01:15:28):
I think you're so right. We're talking with Melissa Thomlinson
here on the Jeff Santio Show. Phone number to join
is eight three three five four five five three three three,
and we'll take your calls in a couple of seconds. Here.
I'm I'm interested in what you believe is going to
(01:15:49):
be the pressure point on more moderates. I mean, you know,
they're obviously if Mondani wins Tonight wins by you know,
say ten points or so. I think a lot of
Democrats in New York who you know, who have kind
of stood behind mister Mamdani, I think will be credited.
Of course, the Attorney General and the governor, two of
(01:16:11):
them but you know, Schumer hasn't said much of anything.
There have been a lot of other members of Congress
who have looked the other way. And I think that,
you know, that should be an opening here for Democrats
to potentially primary these folks. There could be a whole
slew of things that are going on because of the effects.
(01:16:31):
And you know, as John Nichols said earlier, you know,
he's been getting all the arrows. I mean, you know
they're there, are you know, they're bringing everything out of
the woodshed. He's a communist listening to Trump and all
that stuff. Right, He's been able to take it, deflect it,
you know, as the old usher thing you know, just
goes off the shoulder. And I feel like, you know,
(01:16:54):
that's something regardless of where he is politically, that Democrat
should emulate and you know, go bolds, take the hits
and continue to forge ahead. You know, it's that sports metaphor.
If you're a running back, you sometimes have to go
in the middle of the line to get six inches
(01:17:14):
to get a touchdown. But sometimes you got to do
that and you got to take the abuse to get
across the goal line.
Speaker 7 (01:17:21):
Melissa, Yeah, it's a funula that works so we saw
it with AOC. Right, this isn't the first time we've
gone through this. It's somebody who's willing and knows as
a person where they stand and is true to their
own values and does not sway from that.
Speaker 19 (01:17:39):
Right.
Speaker 7 (01:17:39):
So that person who's going to be out there and say, Okay,
I'm going to fight for housing security and rent control
and that's their platform, and that's what they keep moving on,
and they just like just keep going. It's almost like
the energizer buttery bunny. Just keep going and keep going
and keep going, right, And that when you have somebody
(01:18:01):
like that running in an election, you don't have to
worry about, well, they said this, but are they really
going to do it? You know deep down that they're
going to try everything they can to get accomplished what
they say they're going to get accomplished, and that's what
people want.
Speaker 14 (01:18:18):
Very very true. Talking with Melissa Thomason here on the
Jeff Santo Show, Kevin, do we uh still have our
good friend John Dee in the line and I love
to get John a chance to talk to Melissa. So
let's go to John and Minnesota. You are next with
Melissa Thomas and go right, ahead, mister John.
Speaker 17 (01:18:41):
Yeah, absolutely, we need somebody with that kind of energy.
I as a voter, do not expect that they would
get absolutely everything done, but you know, major accomplishments. Yeah,
that's what I would like to see, you know, a
progressive so I would like to see changes. I'm not
(01:19:02):
for the status quo. So uh, you know, I wish
that all candidates had the enthusiasm of a DAMI, you know,
and that would be great, you know, and also have
that progressive policies down of what he is actually going
(01:19:24):
to do, which I think he can do. Uh, you know,
with a cooperation of the city, he could do everything
that he's stated that he wants to do. It's all
needed in it and it has a lot of support.
And I think I'm wishing that we have the same
(01:19:44):
thing going on here in our election in Minneapolis. I
think that it's a possibility, but not we don't have
a strong a candidate, uh, you know, corner as mom, Donnie.
But you know, it's an election that we're all looking at,
(01:20:06):
and you know, we need some positive things to happen
in this country. It's been very depressing overall.
Speaker 14 (01:20:16):
Yeah, particularly over the last nine months, right stration Thank you, John,
Melissa your thoughts on good friend. John had to say, John, may.
Speaker 7 (01:20:27):
Is a very important point that the candidate has a
plan to get there, right. So, uh, I just moved
to another town. So I was doing research on the
city council candidates and this young unknown person is running
for city council. I've been seeing his signs on, like,
all right, who is this person? Let me go look
(01:20:49):
up his platform. He had the three main points that
he wanted to accomplish for the city, for the people
of the town. But not only did he have that,
he had outlined how they would be done. So I
think coming in with that idea and knowing the mechanisms
to get something accomplished are very important, right, because that
(01:21:11):
speaks to a person who's taken the time to put
a lot of thought into it, done the research, learned
how things get passed through city council or through the
mayor's office or whatever that is, and really has intention
on seeing that accomplished.
Speaker 14 (01:21:30):
Yeah, I think you're you're spot on and and and John,
you know, brings up the incredibly important point. And thank
you John. Let me let me ask you something, Melissa,
if you have put your your educator teacher had on
and think if the Democrats, as projected win tonight in California,
(01:21:53):
that's five seats that they could potentially win Central Valley.
You know, health of Los Angeles Riverside area is one
of the run of the seats. If that's the case,
talk to me about what it would mean if the
Democrats win back the House and hopefully the Senate too,
(01:22:15):
How it impacts your job because you were telling me
that because of the Trump cuts and because of Trump's
presence period they control the House and Senate, you can't
get any money. I mean, it's sort of frozen in
a lot of ways. Obviously the importance of winning the
governor's race too, because you get a little bit of
help there, right, But how does it change? So, you know,
(01:22:37):
if you have status quo with the Republicans and they
and we don't win the five seats, the California is
changing for that reason. And they said they're going to
go back to the independent commissions in twenty thirty two.
Then talk to me about, you know, how your life
changes as an educator, as a teacher, because to me,
(01:22:57):
that's why this is so important in California. To only
in California but the other forty United States your thoughts, Well,
for one, being.
Speaker 7 (01:23:07):
A special education teacher, right, a lot of what I
do is overseen, not you know, directly, I don't have
federal workers coming into my classroom and seeing what I do.
But the special education was overseen by the Office of
Civil Rights and the department within the Department of Education.
So that accountability piece right now, schools don't necessarily have
(01:23:31):
to hold accountable to the idea the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act. They don't have to be held accountable to
that law because there's nobody working in the office that's
going to do anything, or say anything, or or check
whether or not the state is in compliance to release funds. So,
with this idea that funds don't have to be given
(01:23:52):
to state, schools aren't putting forward any kind of proactive
budgets to meet the needs of the students that incoming.
We're still dealing with students from COVID. They still need
extra supports and resources. It's not like they're all of
a sudden gone and graduated. When they're you know, middle school,
high school, they're at higher levels and we have to
work to graduate them to get them ready for college.
(01:24:16):
So there's that there's also the kind of overshadowing of
the potential voucher program that you know, we see a
lot of talk around movement towards in some states and
the idea that it could possibly become a federal program
that if we still have a Republican majority at the
federal level.
Speaker 14 (01:24:36):
I think that you know, people need to know that
about what's happening tonight. Again, we'll be on tonight from
seven to eight Pacific time throughout the entire state of
California on two powerhouse stations. If you have a second
to tune in while you're not you know, at the
headquarters of of Mikey Cheryl tonight, you know, we offer
(01:24:59):
you to to listen in. And you know, I just
think that that is going to be very important what
we're talking with Congressman aglie Are of Sam Bernardino coming
up today a five thirty replay that tonight on both
KABC and KSFO. And you know, again it goes from
the Mexican border to the Oregon border in east areno
(01:25:22):
that this again is more than California and hopefully other
governors will copy what Governor Gavin Newsom is doing. Whether
that's in Maryland or not, because you have to fight
fire with fire with what Trump is trying to do
to redistrict everything, and you know, and and basically take
people of color off off the rolls and eliminate their
their presence and their power. And I think this is
(01:25:44):
an important piece as we move along, because you know,
this time next year, if we lose the House by
a couple of votes, we're going to say, well, you know,
what happened here, and why didn't we get more help
from democratic governors?
Speaker 7 (01:26:00):
Your thoughts on that, Yeah, I definitely agree that all
of the states should be watching and seeing what happens
in California tonight and doing everything that they can. You know,
they may not like it, they may not like to
have to stoop down to the level of how they've
been treated by and by the current administration, but at
this point, it's democracy on the line, right, and it's
(01:26:22):
the right of all of the people within our borders,
and that's who they are tasked with protecting. So they
need to make some some critical decisions about how and
what kind of strategy they're going to use moving forward.
Speaker 14 (01:26:38):
I think it's so important and how we move forward
and if we don't, then, you know, shame on us.
I mean there's progressives as Democrats, and you know, in
general we're all from different all kind of walks of
life and different viewpoints. But you know, to me, this
is the opportunity. And Gavin fought back. He's the sort
(01:26:59):
of you know, the lone soldier at Lexington conquered in
a sense that I said, all right, you know you
want to We're gonna, you're gonna be uh, you know,
giving us the high tax for tea and in seventeen
seventy six and you know, we'll we'll we'll fight back
or whatever it was seventeen seventy I.
Speaker 25 (01:27:15):
Don't know all the years.
Speaker 14 (01:27:16):
But the fact is is that I think that people
should really follow, you know, what he has done, because
he is fighting back and he's using the tools that
are in front of him to do it. And again,
whether it's the Maryland governor or the governor in Illinois
or I think they are moving on that direction. I
(01:27:37):
think that's that's the way to do it. All right.
So let's let's take the last two minutes here before
we go. What are you looking for in the state
of New Jersey. Our listing area is mainly northern New Jersey.
Right now, you're in southern New Jersey. What city's town
should we be looking for as key barometers in the
(01:27:57):
race tonight for governor.
Speaker 7 (01:28:01):
So actually a lot of the eyes around South New
Jersey right now, because that's where Chittarelli really pitted a
lot of his campaign because he had the feeling that
he already had the portions of North Jersey that he
was going to have, and South Jersey was not really
(01:28:21):
familiar with either candidate, with both of them being from
the north, so he spent a lot of time down
here in South Jersey has been the past few elections,
has been primarily read. So it'll be interesting to see
if that still translates or you know what the effect
(01:28:42):
of what the current federal administration has done that has
definitely impacted the people down here and how that translates to,
you know, what they used their vote, who they used
their vote for, so.
Speaker 14 (01:28:58):
Brillianton County, of course, Camden is right on the edge
of Philly.
Speaker 7 (01:29:01):
Yeah, Burlington, Camden, definitely, Cape May County. That's a very
big Republican area. So we're curious there's been a lot
of work down there campaigning we do have so kind
of an up ballance swing that we're watching is parts
of Atlantic Ocean County, Burlington County. Anthony Angelosi's running for
(01:29:23):
Assembly and he's actually an educator. And then his running
mate is Andrea Katz, who's an incumbent. So we're watching
to see if that race turns because that's historically a
red area as well.
Speaker 14 (01:29:33):
All right, so now we know, well, look at Burlington County,
Atlantic County, Cape May and of course Camden. You have
to go. I know I have to go. Thank you.
Enjoy tonight. Melissa Thomason, Badass Teaching Executive Director. We'll talk
to you next Tuesday. We'll know who the winners are.
I hope we'll be right. Thank you too, Melissa Thomason.
(01:29:57):
Right here on the Jeff Santo Show.
Speaker 29 (01:29:58):
Back in a flash.
Speaker 4 (01:30:08):
When you're listening to the England Talk Express, NBC News Radio,
I'm Chris Carancio.
Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
Political analysts say Today NBC News Radio, I'm Chris Carancio.
Political analysts say today's elections could have major implications for
next year's midterms. In New York City's mayoral race, Democratic
as Socialists Oran mom Donnie maintains his commanding lead in
the polls over Independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
(01:30:35):
Governor's races are on the line in New Jersey and Virginia. Meanwhile,
voters in California will decide whether to redraw their congressional maps.
That'll probably mean five more seats in Congress for Democrats.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age
of eighty four. His family announced his passing today, saying
he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and
vascular disease. Flags are flying at half staff at the
(01:30:58):
White House and the White House as it's complying with
court orders regarding SNAP benefits.
Speaker 2 (01:31:03):
The recipients of the estaff benefits need to understand it's
going to take some time to receive this money because
the Democrats have forced the administration into a very untenable position.
Speaker 1 (01:31:12):
Pro Secretary Caroline Levitt clarified a truth Social post made
by President Trump this morning saying the benefits would not
be paid until Democrats reopened the government. She said the
President was referring to not wanting to tap into an
emergency fund any further to pay SNAP benefits. Funding for
the food assistance program ran out Saturday. If Transportation Secretary
Sean Duffy says, sections of the country's airspace may be
(01:31:35):
closed if the shutdown drags on. He warned there will
be mass chaos, including mass flight delays and cancelations, if
the shutdown continues in the next week. For the first time,
we are hearing from a hunter who was lost for
twenty days in the Sierra National Forest. Ron Daly's truck
got stuck and he ran out of food.
Speaker 3 (01:31:52):
Either try to walk out, may You're going to sit
here and die.
Speaker 1 (01:31:56):
Daly's daughter Brianna, made the recording as he recovers in
a hospital. The fifty five year old Fresno County man
was found by a search party. He was dehydrated and exhausted.
The Sheriff's office says more information about the circumstances of
his survival will be shared after he recovers. I'm Chris Karajio,
NBC News Radio.
Speaker 20 (01:32:15):
Okay, hold on, I'm getting Trumping here, breaking news out

Speaker 14 (01:33:25):
Show thirty three minutes past the hour. It is the
Jeff Santo Show that you are tuned into. Coming you
live from the South coast here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Folks,
(01:33:47):
There's so much to to go over in this twenty
minute segment with our good friend Jerry Austin. But he's
doing that he loves this day. We used to play
the Ruby Tuesday song for him, but because of rules
that we don't want to get into, we don't have
the authority to do that. Although I will find a
(01:34:08):
cover band from the Rolling Stones and I will tell
you we will make that happen. Mister Austin, Jerry Austin,
of course, the media consultant ajore here on the Jeff
Santo Show. He is, of course a veteran of a
million campaigns, leading Jesse Jackson to a number of upsets
in the nineteen eighty eight Democratic primary versus Mike Dukakis.
(01:34:31):
And of course he was a campaign manager as well.
Of course, Carol Malsey Braun, first African American woman elected
since reconstruction in Illinois in ninety two, Paul Wellstone's miraculous
upset victory over Boschwitz in nineteen ninety We welcome him
from the great state of Ohio. Mister Austin. Happy Election Day,
(01:34:52):
twenty twenty five. Happy Ruby Tuesday, Jerry Day, how are you.
Speaker 18 (01:35:00):
I hope it is a happy day today.
Speaker 14 (01:35:03):
I hope. So we get some warning signs, you know,
in New Jersey, and I guess the Pennsylvania Supreme Court
stuff too. I want to start there, because it's really
hard to predict. I just did a little research last thing,
and I guess the Democrats hold like a five to
two advantage, and so hopefully they can, you know, only
lose one seed be four to three and then the
(01:35:26):
whole thing is complicated. Is this something I don't know
if Ohio has This is a handful of states that do.
Do you think that we got to look at reform
of the of the way these state Supreme Court? And
I know that the Republicans control the legislature, so I
don't know if it's ever going to happen there, but
you know, talk to me about this. Is political consultant
is a former advisor to Dick Celesti. The last time
(01:35:49):
the Democrats won back to back races, it was Jerry
Austin there with Dick celeste Because I want to put
more my fingers on this, but you know, it's it
those when they are elected as nonpartisan? Are they elected
as partisan but then they run as nonpartisan? Kind of
a wacky kind of way to run. You know your
(01:36:10):
Supreme Court? Your thoughts on that?
Speaker 31 (01:36:12):
Man?
Speaker 18 (01:36:13):
Man, Well, first of all, you know, it's different in
every state. In Ohio, about six years ago, the candidates
for Supreme Court ran without party designation and the Democrats
did very well. The Republicans in the legislature changed it
(01:36:35):
to party designation and the Democrats got wiped out. In
other states. I did a racing in the Illinois number
of years ago with the incumbent instead of running for
re election against an opponent, ran for basically what's what
is going on in Pennsylvania for retention. But in Illinois,
(01:36:59):
in order for that incumbing to be retained, they had
to get sixty percent of the vote. That's not the
case in Pennsylvania. They just have to win. So it's
sort of a you know, I'm thinking to myself, if
I'm a political resultant, why I want the retention race
if I'm basically going against retaining that person, because I
(01:37:24):
can then get people who are Democrats, Republicans, whatever given
reason to vote you know, no on that matter being
partisan or do I want you know the other side
of that, which is okay, yes or no. The difference
here in Pennsylvania is all these seats up at once,
(01:37:44):
and it can have a dramatic change in the court.
Speaker 14 (01:37:50):
Yeah, I mean, you know it could. It could really
throw things. And again would the Republicans controlling I don't
know if it's the state Senate or both the House,
and in Pennsylvania, I don't know if you know that,
but I know they all obviously they hold a veto
because you know, at least one of their chambers they
can control, and that could you know, put a cabash
on anything that Shapiro wants to do. I I just
(01:38:14):
hope that you know that people come out and you know,
and however, the Democratic Party is looking at this. You know,
they may they may have to sort of you know,
figure a way to get you know, a coalition that
that they may not have had successfully. Obviously, they the
(01:38:36):
Democrats lost in in twenty twenty four for president uh,
and they lost their Senate race too, so there may
be some reshuffling going on there and how they do it.
Speaker 18 (01:38:47):
Okay, maybe keep in mind, keeven keep in mind that
what's happened here in Pennsylvania in particular, and also in
the races in Virginia and New Jersey is they made
this about Trump. I mean Trump got involved there, having
people contributed money and and all that, and so the
(01:39:10):
people that want to be retained on that side, they
made this about Trump.
Speaker 29 (01:39:15):
Uh.
Speaker 18 (01:39:15):
And even though Trump won Pennsylvania, he's not very popular
the analysis, he's not in other places as well. So
you know, Trump may have helped the retain side win.
Speaker 14 (01:39:27):
This fascinating we're talking with Jerry Austin, media consultant a
jour here regular here on the Jeff Santo Show on
election days or Ruby Tuesday. Every day is an election
day on Tuesday, and we we love chatting with him.
All right, let's go to a place where you grew
(01:39:48):
up in New York City. Uh, and mister Momdannie uh
and of course across the across the divide there in
New Jersey and miss Mikey Cheryl starting with Mamdani. You know,
he's taken a lot of a lot of arrows from
people who used to be Democrats like Andrew Cuomo and
(01:40:09):
and on others and so forth. I heard today, you know,
from a Republican consultant. I think it was the guy
that used to advise Mike Pence actually on one of
the networks and he was talking about and they asked
him the question of you know, I'm Donnie is going
to be the poster boy for Republicans. He said, well,
(01:40:31):
you know, a lot of people think that this is
a a a populist type of year, you know, much
like twenty four was two, you know, kick the incumbents
out and so forth. If that's the case, Mandami is
going to be in my opinion, you know, a key driver.
Not so much of the exact policies that he wants
(01:40:53):
to implement in New York City because it's it's New
York City, much more progressive audience than it is in
other parts of the country. But I think, you know,
his communication style on pocketbook issues, you know, can be
used and not necessarily him going in campaign, we talked
about that. You made a great point, You've got to
take care in New York City first, but you know,
(01:41:15):
whether it's in New Jersey or Virginia or any state
that matter, they can take some of those issues of
economic concerns and affordability, rents too damn high, you know,
and go from there. I mean, again, you can't see it,
but I have the Dunkin Donuts coffee. One pound of
coffee ud be seven dollars, and I think ninety nine
(01:41:36):
cents at the S and S the grocery store chain
here in Massachusetts, been there for years, it's now fourteen dollars,
ninety nine cents. Again, that economic issue, of course, you
understand it very well in Ohio and how that is
determined elections in the last forty to fifty years. I
believe that, you know, this is something that other Democrats
(01:41:59):
can take, uh, but use it in their own in
their own way, much as sort of Biden did with
Bernie Sanders in that first year where he's at sixty
percent approval rating the American Rescue Plan. He took some
things that Bernie wanted and took some other things that
moderates wanted, and he had a very successful, you know,
first six months or whatever it was. Your thoughts, mister Austin, Well.
Speaker 18 (01:42:23):
Keep keep in mind that that the affordability issue is
something that you know Trump ran on successfully. Yes, that
mand the difference is and it's being used in the
Jersey's been used everywhere because it's it's a natural issue.
What what kind of points you give from Mondambi in
(01:42:45):
terms of he's a once generation communicator, so having the
issue is one thing. How to communicate that with somebody
that that is you know, I mean, I I don't
remember having people I've seen in my liberal lifetime who
have this kind of scale. It's not if you've got
something that you can learn, it said, something that you
(01:43:08):
can nurture, and but you've got to have it, and
he's got it. Obama obviously had it. You know, Clinton
had it, Reagan had it, and that's you know, that's
a difference to take an issue, But put it together
with somebody who who can communicate. I think I can.
Gavid knows him has it right.
Speaker 14 (01:43:26):
You know, it's rare, it is, it is rare, and
I think that's going to be an important piece of
how they move down. But I really believe if Democrats run,
you know, I have to describe myself as a progressive
populist if you have that kind of ability to h
to communicate that kind of message, which basically is an
(01:43:46):
FDR message that Democrats have won on for a long
long time. Vietnam stopped that in the late sixties, as
we all know, and you know some of it has
been incorporated by Obama less so with Clinton. And we'll see,
you know, what what happens here as we move along.
But I think it's going to be fascinating. Before we
(01:44:07):
go to the phones, and we'll go to Tom in
Los Angeles in the second, I want to I want
to ask you a little bit about you know, if
indeed an all the poll show that the Democrats should
win big tonight in California. I asked this to Melissa Tomlinson.
I want to talk to you as as as folks
you know who are looking and how the Democrats can
(01:44:28):
win back the House and what it means. So the
Democrats win, we'll say by twelve points in the end
when all the votes are county in California, those five
seats Democrats, you know, run some good candidates. We'll be
talking to your good friend and mine, Gary South tonight
on our live show in California across then across the
(01:44:52):
state from the Mexican Board at the Oregon East a Reno, Nevada.
And I really feel that there is a great opportunity
here to tell the story of how important this is,
that what Gavin Newsom did and he fought back against
Trump and other governors now having to look at this
(01:45:15):
on the Democratic side more in Maryland, Pritz Grew, I think,
is looking to emulate what it is in Illinois. But
to me, know there are a lot of it's a
whole the situation in New York with Lockville. I mean,
you know this to me because you have to be
able to win back the House in twenty twenty six,
and this goes a long way toward trying to make
that happen. How do you view it as a consultant
(01:45:38):
from your place in the Midwest, I'd be interested in
how you view what comes out of tonight In terms
of that California race.
Speaker 18 (01:45:51):
Well, there are two things. One, you know, what Newson
was doing in California and ABBA's doing in Texas. All
these moves by governors to basically increasing to the Democratic Republicans,
you know, conventional delegation in this state. That's that's one thing, okay,
But I think you lose sight of the fact that
there are the incumbents who are running who are Republicans,
(01:46:14):
who were won in very close races, and some of
them that may be one no moderately, that are being
challenged by really good Democratic candidates. In some cases we
have Democratic primaries with pretty good candidates. But I think
I think number one, you have to have a good candidate.
Speaker 25 (01:46:32):
A B.
Speaker 18 (01:46:33):
You have to have be issues, and all of these
people have voted for Ella Trump's issues. Uh, and that's
you know, you can't lose sight of that. As to me,
the priority not just creating new districts that supposedly we
can you know, we can win Democrats to win or
Republicans think they can win, you know, especially in Texas.
(01:46:53):
So there are more seats that are up in in
you know, marginal races there were won by Republicans last
time that we need to win. Then there are these
new seats.
Speaker 14 (01:47:07):
Yeah, I think that, you know, it's it's I think
a bright future. I was talking with John Nichols about
this earlier. I think, you know, if everything goes as
predicted by a lot of the polls, and I know
it's closer in New Jersey and we'll get into that
in a second, they will take a call from Tom.
But I think that, you know, if it all goes well,
(01:47:28):
the Democrats should look at what Newsom has done, and
other governors should look at it and do what they
can to help. You know, again, because it's not only Texas,
it's Indiana, it's I think Missouri, other places where they
have Jerry rigged, in my opinion, the redistrict. I'm not
saying Democrats have never done, you know, some bad things
they have. You know, it's been going on for you know,
uh the Aaron Massachusetts where they came up with the
(01:47:50):
term gerrymander. So but I think this is an important
thing to save the democracy because if you have status
quo and the Republicans hold onto the House and Senate,
I mean you and I are lived in a dictatorship
and you can forget about anything. And by the way,
I want you to remind people, because I'm glad you're
on right now and my crazy memory, talk to us
(01:48:11):
about what happened when you went out to Hungary a
couple of years ago and you couldn't even get out
your mailing material because Orbond's people wouldn't let you. I
know we're a little off you know direction here, but
that's just me. You know, it could be coming to
this country again if we don't win back the House
(01:48:31):
and hopefully send it too. About what happened to your candidate.
Speaker 18 (01:48:37):
Well, the there our Bond uh basically is from hero right,
you know, he's basically a dictator in Hungary. And I
was involved in what I was involved in the last
time we beat Orbon and I had six candidates that
(01:49:00):
race and we had to win three we didn't and
you know, preventive of becoming prime minister. And the last
time I went, I was particularly involved with one candidate
who was uh, you know, never run drivers before. She
was like a bookkeeper in an accounting firm and and
basically they basically threatened her and and said that, uh,
(01:49:26):
you don't you know, they basically cease and desist in
what you're doing and just go to you know, the
mandatory minimal type of things. Uh, we're going to make
your life miserable. And even if you won, uh, you know,
your your firm is going to be you know, dissolved.
I mean, I mean, the point is that Trump Trump
(01:49:46):
has been doing this because these are Republicans that basically
do anything he wants. Must have a reason that they
don't care about people starting to take you away snap,
they don't care about military veterans losing the ability to
get services out of the VA. And I believe that
(01:50:07):
Trump Trump either has you know, Dotsier's on these people
and uh or even you know, threatened them in terms
of beating them in the primary or physically threatening them.
You know, Marjorie Taylor Green doesn't seem to have that problem.
A couple other Republicans, but you know, it's incredible that
(01:50:28):
when people are losing the ability to to you know,
provide for their families, these Republicans, you know, just sit
by and do nothing.
Speaker 14 (01:50:38):
All right, let's go to the phones. Tom in Los Angeles.
You're next with Jerry Austin here on the Jeff Santo Show.
Go right ahead, Tom, Yeah, Jeff.
Speaker 16 (01:50:47):
First off, we the people ultimately out of the government,
and we must never forget us stuck at we the
most all people must really really be aware that we
must get money completely out of politics so we can
restore government back to lead the people. You know, everyone
keeps on trying to figure out like what Zoron did
(01:51:09):
and all this kind of stuff. Honestly, I think it's
because we have no more journalism in this country. You know,
in journalism one on one, you're in sales, you're taught
to ask open ended questions who, what, when, why, where
and how. It actually kind of keeps you away from
your opinion information because of the fact that you're asking
(01:51:31):
unbiased questions in a way that actually is just looking
for information. What Zoron did is he went out and
asked the people what, when, why, wear, and how, and
when he found out what it is that the people wanted,
you know, gave their opinion on, then he developed his
message in terms of what it is that he was
(01:51:52):
going to do. This is not a difficult thing for
people to do. Just talk to your constituents, talk to
the people.
Speaker 14 (01:52:00):
Yeah, but not everybody can do that, Tom, but not
everybody can do that. And obviously is what Jerry said.
You know, he has a particularly great communication skill. But
you're right, they should be doing that. They should be
going on the buses, they should be out there talking
to people and you know, uh not you know in
the in the in the cloak rooms of the Democratic
Party in Washington. The more people get out of their
(01:52:23):
congressional seats in Washington and go to talk to the
average person is the better off they do. And you know,
my Donny is doing on steroids talking to bus people.
People on a bus, you know, headed uh you know,
to their next job or the next place that they
need to go home or whatever and cook for their kids.
Speaker 16 (01:52:41):
So what that takes as a politician, though, is actually
being interested in people. Yes, I mean, this is the
part that's missing. We're not a I world, We're not
IVR world. We figure out what people want. I mean,
I know myself when I go out and I work
in sales, half the time I only talk about the
(01:53:04):
conversation of what I'm selling. I find out where they're problem,
I find out what they like, I find out all
these different things. It's like a walking yell grassroots and politician.
I mean, it's just let me, let me bring. If
people have to take, if people have to fake authenticity,
then get the.
Speaker 22 (01:53:23):
Hell out of politics, amen, brother, Because.
Speaker 16 (01:53:26):
If you don't care about a loop about people and
what the hell are you doing in this industry?
Speaker 14 (01:53:32):
Fair enough? Jerry Austin to makes some great points here.
You know, you've seen candidates that you know, you don't
want them to talk because it's just gonna come out
wrong and it'll be foot in the mouth disease.
Speaker 35 (01:53:44):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (01:53:45):
But you know, getting to where people you know can
can if you're a good communicator, and you don't have
to be you know, Harvard trained or Ivy League trained
to do it. In fact, they probably better off without it.
You know, it's a case in Maine right now. We
had on former MSNBC reporter Alex sites Walt, who's been
(01:54:09):
up there, and you know, the people are not at
all concerned what Washington and New York media are about.
Speaker 25 (01:54:15):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (01:54:16):
And when Washington New York media go up there, they
look at seven hundred people in a town of two
thousand and they see a guy communicating with his backgrunners
a vet uh and as a fisherman. So yeah, so
there's that example too, Jerry, your thoughts and what Tom
had say.
Speaker 18 (01:54:33):
Well, let me let me I think, take a different
direction here. You know, one of the groups of people
that have been basically beat up what was the last
number of years, of political consultants and who are certain degree,
no even more than they deserve it. But I can
tell you that there's somebody whose name I don't know,
(01:54:57):
somebody's behind Mandai. Somebody saw him and said, a kid,
you know you're to run for assembly or whatever in
story acquaints and saw in him, uh, you know, a
charisma communication skill that nobody else had seen uh, and
watched him and and work with him. I'm not suggesting
(01:55:20):
during one person I've seen that. I've been part of
that where you where you see somebody go wait a second.
I mean it happened to me with Dick Celeste, who
I met. He wasn't involved in politics at all. And
it's just when a guy I met and said, I
don't know if this guy was gonna gonna be when
he grows up, there's gonna be somebody who wasn't necessary politics.
So my point is that you know, Damie has take
(01:55:41):
taking this great skill and what and you know, to
the point just made, he's a salesman, right, he's selling
himself and he knows he knows who he's talking to
you when he's telling himself. Whether it's and it's New York,
it's different. You know, there are people around the country
that are doing spots by eating schwarma on the street,
not riding subways. New York is different, totally different. The
(01:56:05):
only thing you could you know, talk about in terms
of this race in New York is he's fixed in
on the affordability issue to fix people all over the country.
But the way he campaigns and the gift he has
and it's been nurtured by by you know, people around him,
it's it's special and it doesn't happen very often.
Speaker 14 (01:56:29):
No, He's he's a rarity. And I just hope people
can can learn. And again, I mean, you've seen thousands
of candidates, Jerry uh. You know, I don't know of
many people have ever seen on a bus talking to
another another person, you know, and that bus probably smells
of urine and other things. And you know, and and
he's there having a conversation. Uh, it's sort of like natural,
(01:56:51):
like you know, somebody who was riding the bus both
of us have done over the years, and having the conversation,
and he's doing it with a camera and talking about
the issues and being able to communicate that, you know,
two thousands of voters in the great city of New York. Tom,
great points, Thank you, my friend. Just a couple of minutes, Jerry,
(01:57:13):
just a touch on the race in New Jersey. You
have a unique situation. We talked to Debora Coornovaki yesterday
who is the former deputy chief of staff to Governor
Phil Murphy, the current governor. As I said to deb yesterday,
you know, they're the issue of energy is a big one.
But one of Republican governors or Republican politicians ever done
(01:57:36):
to reduce energy costs for people making you know, forty
grand a year. Nothing, so I think, And you know,
we're we're just into New York today at New York,
New Jersey station AM fifteen hundred w g HT. You know,
so we're brand new there. But I'm I'm hoping that Mike,
you cheryls says, Look, you know, we're going to try
(01:57:59):
to correct this situation with energy. But the Republicans, you know,
can can mouth it, but they're not going to do anything.
And there's no proof of it. That Republican Party has
been a disaster for economics going back to Hoover, you know,
through the end of Reagan, Bush one, Bush two and
now Trump. So you know, I would fight back that
(01:58:20):
way if you're concerned about issues you know that are
out there, that are real issues, like the energy issue
in New Jersey, your thoughts about that from your perspective,
and now you would handle it well.
Speaker 18 (01:58:31):
So one of the reason is that that New Jersey
will you will probably be close, is because the Republican
candidate ran last time and so he you know, he's
got no Techondally Trump diet better in New Jersey THANX
done before. You know, lost by four or five points.
And Nick Mickey Cherrol has been a congressman kind of
(01:58:55):
person for one part of the state. But again, I
think the issue in New Jersey and the reason that
she will prevail is because of Trump because they are
part the people with buyers remorse and the only time
they was not the only time, the first time they
have a chance to show the buyers remorse is these
races today and if there's a clean suite and all
(01:59:20):
the races that we care about and want to win,
Trump's the reason that they've won.
Speaker 14 (01:59:25):
Well, said mister Jerry Austin. We'll talk to you next Tuesday,
and we'll be watching tonight, look forward to your analysis
next week and looking back at what Election Day twenty
twenty five is all about. Thanks Jerry, We'll be right back, folks.
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (02:00:01):
Voters are going to the polls today in several high
stakes races that could be a barometer for the twenty
twenty six midterms. In New York City, a political newcomers
all Rand mom Donnie has a huge lead in the
polls over veteran politician Andrew Cuomo in the race for
mayor governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia could also
reshape the political landscape for Democrats and Republicans. Today is
a special election day in California, where voters will decide
(02:00:24):
the fate of Proposition fifty Rough fifty bypasses and independent
Redistricting Committee for six years, allowing new district lines to
be drawn to benefit Democratic Party candidates. Flags at the
White House are flying at half staff and honor of
former Vice President Dick Cheney. His family announced his passing
today at the age of eighty four, saying he died
due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Cheney,
(02:00:44):
who served as the nation's forty sixth Vice president from

Let me tell you something about a bully. The only
thing they understand is strength. The Democratic Party were furious
at me for organizing the need to impeach campaign, but
we saw the front.
Speaker 35 (02:04:09):
Millions joined the movement. Trump tried to steal one election.
He's trying again. Now it's Texas versus California. You want
to beat Trump. Democrats can't keep playing by the old rules.
Vote yes on Prop fifty and let's stick it to Trump.
Speaker 39 (02:04:27):

Okay, hold on, I'm getting trumping here. Breaking news out
of California tonight. The results are in and voters have
just passed Prop fifty. What this is a major lead
Trump and.
Speaker 19 (02:05:47):
Power stop.
Speaker 23 (02:05:49):
This is the house.
Speaker 19 (02:05:52):
Trump investigative corruption.
Speaker 23 (02:05:56):
You want to stick it to Trump?
Speaker 28 (02:05:58):
Vote?
Speaker 33 (02:05:58):
Yes, I'm Prop fifty.
Speaker 21 (02:06:00):
Hate California.

Speaker 7 (02:06:10):
A live.
Speaker 12 (02:06:33):
This is the Jeff Santo Show on the Revolution Radio Network,
Rebuilding America together, invest in activism and supporting the middle class.
Speaker 8 (02:06:45):
Now here's Jeff.
Speaker 14 (02:07:06):
It is our two of the Jeff Santo Show, and
welcome to it, folks, coming to you live from the
south coast here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We're gonna
be chatting with our good friend Jerry Austin at the
bottom of the hour, the great media consultant there for
Jesse Jackson in nineteen eighty eight, Paul Wollstone, Caarraen Molsey Braun,
major impact on the progressive movement of the last forty years.
(02:07:30):
That'll be coming up again at four thirty three Eastern time.
Again later today, we'll be talking with the Congressman from
San Bernardino, the thirty third district in the great state
of California and Conreerceman Pete Agiliarra at five thirty Eastern.
That's two thirty Pacific time here on the Jeff Santo Show.
(02:07:51):
But we start now in New Jersey. Of course, it's
so great to be on AM fifteen hundred WGHT, and
we're very very happy about the opportunity to do that
and to bring in somebody from that great state. A
good friend. She is the executive director of the best
name in politics, bad Ass Teachers, and she is a
(02:08:13):
badass and she is Melissa Tomlinson, and she joins us
from her office. Usually I was going to say from
her automobile because she's always on the run. But there
you go. You get the classroom behind you there and
looking good in the hood. Is that actually your classroom
or is that just an office area?
Speaker 7 (02:08:36):
Hi, Jeff, that's my union office.
Speaker 14 (02:08:38):
Ah, very good, very good. Well, big day in New
Jersey for your union and our good friend and your
good friend and ours at Debra Cornavaca. And she was
on yesterday telling us about this race, which you know
is close, but we're still very hopeful. And I think
(02:08:59):
that is the case on the race tonight between Cinderelli
the Republican and of course miss Mikey Cheryl on the
Democratic side. What is your take? What's the excitement level
there in South Jersey for the race? I saw a
couple of your colleagues, couple of teachers actually, who were
(02:09:22):
on one of the networks earlier, and they were both
psyched about, you know, the race for governor of course,
voting for the Democrat. What's the energy level you are, Well.
Speaker 7 (02:09:35):
Everybody's tired for one, but yeah, definitely a lot of excitement. Yeah,
it was a long weekend. People were out door knocking.
Obama flew in he was in Newark. Yeah, so it's
been it's been a long couple of weeks. Yeah, but
everybody's positive, right, So that's the good thing. Just hopefully
it translates to what we see in the results tonight.
Speaker 14 (02:09:59):
Well, it is going to be extremely important that we
we moved this Nino on the Democratic Party spoke with
John Nichols about this. I think that the more they
follow the road map that began with FDR in the
nineteen thirties and continued, you know, through Truman and Eisenhower,
(02:10:19):
even Republican Eisenhower at ninety percent tax rate, and through
Kennedy in the first couple of years of LBJ before Vietnam,
you know, threw it all out to drain. But I
really believe that what happened in the early part of
this decade in twenty twenty one, when Bernie and Biden
(02:10:40):
came together, that to me is a great combo that
led to Biden being you know, sixty percent approval rating
that first year. He later fumbled, and you know, I
think that cost the Democrats the House in twenty twenty two.
You couldn't get build back better done and became IRA.
But it was sort of you know, lesser than you
(02:11:03):
look at what Spanburger if she does become governor, and
looking too, the excitement galore that is Mamdani is doing
in New York City. You know that the idea of coalescing.
And again they don't have to work together because the're
two different states. We understand that. But to me, if
(02:11:25):
she plays the role of Biden here because she's the
chief executive of the state, he's just the chief executive
of the city. Granted is massive in New York City,
number one, But to me, if you kind of figure
out a way to sort of capture that energy on
some of the issues, the economic issues, again, I think
(02:11:47):
that's a successful roadmap for her and for you know,
educators that you're a part of that community too. Your
thoughts there, Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 7 (02:11:57):
There's definitely a lot of opportunities right now to move
the needle in the Democratic Party, which is what we need.
We've been saying this for a number of years now.
It was interesting I was listening to Foz Shaker this
morning and they were talking about the governor's race and
what's going on, and they did mention New Jersey, but
they were relating it to the popularity of the Democratic Party.
(02:12:20):
He was asked, you know, oh, do you think the
popularity of the Democratic Party is starting to be on
the upswing again? Question like that, and his response caused
me a moment hesitation. His response was, well, I guess
we'll see what happens as a result of tonight's elections.
And I really want to caution the Democratic Party with
(02:12:43):
the idea that just because you may win elections right
now doesn't necessarily mean that people are believing in you again.
So they do need to find that formula where they're
going for progressive ideals, and they are really starting to
listen to the people and to their experiences and making
sure that that is what their decision making is being
based on.
Speaker 14 (02:13:04):
Well, you know, and again we're gonna have to get
a new prop because we can't keep doing this all
the time. But I have my my dunkin Donuts thing
here and you know what, seven dollars to fourteen dollars,
the S and s still there. I just checked it
the other day, and to me, that is an example
that frankly is real, and it's real for a lot
(02:13:26):
of people. You know, it's it's I know, gas is
a little cheaper in the northeast, and it is in
other parts of the country. But you know, those are
basic needs. And if Democrats understand what the working class
is going through and stick to that, and Mandani is
talking to people. I mean, you know, not everybody has
massive buses going down you know, Fifth Avenue like New
(02:13:47):
York City does, but they have buses. You know, it
may not be a bad idea if you're a mayor
or a member of Congress, you know, to ride that
bus and to talk to the people there, you know,
I mean, if you get to those folks, you know.
I mean one of the things you know we want
to do is to talk to taxi drivers in New
York City. You know, they getting screwed because they want
(02:14:07):
to have these you know, unmanned cars they want to do.
Of course, Uber has really destroyed a lot of their business.
But to me, you know, they always represent, you know,
stories of people coming in and out of the big
city of New York. And that's who a lot of
our friends in the Democratic Party should be talking to.
(02:14:30):
Your thoughts and students of yours and the teachers that
your colleagues, Yeah, not.
Speaker 7 (02:14:36):
Only talking to but really taking some time to understand
what it's like to be in their shoes, right. So
you know, we know we have this ongoing food crisis
right now with the Snap recipients and others. Right, it's
been on growing, on going even before the government shut down.
The Senator from Connecticut, I think it's Senator and More
(02:14:58):
is actually living on Snap amounts for a day and
he's posting all of his meals right. And so I
did a little bit of research, and what really struck
me was he did this when he was mayor because
he wanted to understand what his constituents were going through
on a daily basis. It wasn't just that he listened
(02:15:20):
to them and it went beyond lip service, but it
actually elevated their experiences, grew his understanding and the public's
understanding about what it was like to be in that
person's shoes. I think more of that needs to be done.
Speaker 14 (02:15:35):
I think you're so right. We're talking with Melissa Thomlinson
here on the Jeff Santo Show. Phone number to join
is eight three three five four five five three three three,
and we'll take your calls in a couple of seconds.
Year I'm I'm interested in.
Speaker 11 (02:15:52):
What you believe.
Speaker 14 (02:15:54):
Is going to be the pressure point on more moderate
I mean, you know, they're obviously if Mondani wins Tonight
wins by, you know, say, I don't know ten points
or so. I think a lot of Democrats in New
York who you know, who have kind of stood behind
mister Mamdani I think will be credited. Of course, Attorney
(02:16:17):
General and the governor are two of them. But you know,
Schumer hasn't said much of anything. Uh, there have been
a lot of other members of Congress who have looked
the other way. And I think that you know, that
should be an opening here for Democrats to potentially primary
these folks. There could be a whole slew of things
that are going on because of the effects. And you know,
(02:16:39):
as John Nichol said earlier, you know he's been getting
all the arrows. I mean, you know they're there, are
you know, they're bringing everything out of the woodshed. He's
a communist listening to Trump and all that stuff, right,
He's been able to take it, deflect it, you know,
as the old usher thing you know just goes off
the shoulder. And I feel feel like, you know, that's something,
(02:17:02):
regardless of where he is politically, that Democrats should emulate
and you know, go Bolds take the hits and continue
to forge ahead.
Speaker 35 (02:17:14):
You know.
Speaker 14 (02:17:14):
It's that sports metaphor. If you're a running back you
sometimes have to go in the middle of the line
to get six inches to get a touchdown. But sometimes
you got to do that and you got to take
the abuse to get across the goal line. Melissa, Yeah, it's.
Speaker 7 (02:17:30):
A formula that works. So we saw it with AOC. Right,
this isn't the first time we've gone through this. It's
somebody who's willing and knows as a person where they
stand and is true to their own values and does
not sway from that. Right, So that person who's going
to be out there and say, Okay, I'm going to
(02:17:51):
fight for housing security and rent control and that's their platform,
and that's what they keep moving on and they just
like just keep going. It's almost like the energizer butter bunny.
Just keep going and keep going and keep going, right,
And that when you have somebody like that running in
an election, you don't have to worry about, well, they
(02:18:13):
said this, but are they really going to do it?
You know deep down that they're going to try everything
they can to get accomplished what they say they're going
to get accomplished, and that's what people want.
Speaker 14 (02:18:25):
Very very true. Talk with Melissa Thomason here on the
Jeff Santo Show, Kevin, do we still have our good
friend John Dee in the line, and I love to
get John a chance to talk to Melissa. So let's
go to John and Minnesota. You are next with Melissa
Thomas and go right ahead, mister John.
Speaker 15 (02:18:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (02:18:48):
Absolutely, we need somebody with that kind of energy.
Speaker 29 (02:18:53):
I as a voter, do not.
Speaker 17 (02:18:54):
Expect that they would get absolutely everything done, but you know,
major accomplishments. Yeah, that's what I would like to see.
You know, I'm a progressive, so I would like to
see changes. I'm not for the status quo. So you know,
I wish that all candidates had the enthusiasm of Adami,
(02:19:19):
you know, and that would be great, you know, and
also have that progressive policies down of what he's actually
going to do, which I think he can do, you know,
with a cooperation of the city, he could do everything
that he's stated that he wants to do. It's all
(02:19:42):
needed in it and it has a lot of support.
And I think I'm wishing that we have the same
thing going on here in our election in Minneapolis. I
think that it's a possibility, but not we don't have
a strong a candidate.
Speaker 14 (02:20:05):
Uh, you know corner as mom Donnie.
Speaker 17 (02:20:08):
But you know it's an election that we're all looking at,
and you know, we need some positive things to happen
in this country. It's been very depressing overall.
Speaker 14 (02:20:24):
Yeah, this year, particularly over the last nine months. Right stration,
Thank you John, Melissa your thoughts on good friend John
had to say, John.
Speaker 7 (02:20:34):
May is a very important point that the candidate has
a plan to get there.
Speaker 21 (02:20:41):
Right.
Speaker 7 (02:20:41):
So, Uh, I just moved to another town. So I
was doing research on the city council candidates and this
young unknown person is running for city council. I've been
seeing his signs on like, all right, who is this person?
Let me go look up his platform. He had the
three main points that he too accomplish for the city,
for the people of the town. But not only did
(02:21:04):
he have that, he had outlined how they would be done.
So I think coming in with that idea and knowing
the mechanisms to get something accomplished are very important, right,
because that speaks to a person who's taken the time
to put a lot of thought into it. Done. The
research learned how things get passed through city council or
(02:21:28):
through the mayor's office or whatever that is, and really
has intention on seeing that accomplished.
Speaker 14 (02:21:37):
Yeah, I think you're you're spot on and and John,
you know, brings up the incredibly important point, and thank
you John. Let me let me ask you something, Melissa.
If you put your your educator teacher had on and
think if the Democrats as projected when tonight in California,
(02:22:01):
that's five seats that they could potentially win. Central Valley,
you know, south of Los Angeles Riverside area is one
of the run of the seats. If that's the case,
talk to me about what it would mean if the
Democrats win back the House and hopefully the Senate too.
(02:22:22):
How it impacts your job because you were telling me
that because of the Trump cuts and because of Trump's
presence period they control the House and Senate, you can't
get any money. I mean, it's sort of frozen in
a lot of ways. Obviously the importance of winning the
governor's race too, because you get a little bit of
help there, right, But how does it change? So you know,
(02:22:44):
if you have status quo with the Republicans and they
and we don't win the five seats that California is
changing for that reason, and they said they're going to
go back to the independent commissions in twenty thirty two.
Then talk to me about, you know, how your life
changes as an educator, as a teacher, because to me,
(02:23:04):
that's why this is so important in California to not
only in California, but the other forty United States.
Speaker 7 (02:23:10):
Your thoughts, well, for one, being a special education teacher, right,
a lot of what I do is overseeing, not you know, directly,
I don't have federal workers coming into my classroom and
seeing what I do, but the special education was overseen
by the Office of Civil Rights and the department within
(02:23:31):
the Department of Education. So that accountability piece right now,
schools don't necessarily have to hold accountable to the idea
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. They don't have to
be held accountable to that law because there's nobody working
in the office that's going to do anything, or say anything,
or or check whether or not the state is in
(02:23:54):
compliance to release funds. So with this idea that funds
don't have to be into state, schools aren't putting forward
any kind of proactive budgets to meet the needs of
the students that are incoming. We're still dealing with students
from COVID. They still need extra supports and resources. It's
not like they're all of a sudden gone and graduated.
(02:24:15):
When they're you know, middle school, high school, they're at
higher levels and we have to work to graduate them
to get them ready for college. So there's that. There's
also the kind of overshadowing of the potential Boucher program
that you know, we see a lot of talk around
movement towards in some states and the idea that it
(02:24:35):
could possibly become a federal program that if we still
have a Republican majority at the federal level.
Speaker 14 (02:24:43):
I think that you know, people need to know that
about what's happening tonight. Again, we'll be on tonight from
seven to eight Pacific time throughout the entire state of
California on two powerhouse stations. If you have a second
to tune in while you're not you know, at the
the headquarters of of Mikey Cheryl tonight, you know, we
(02:25:06):
offer you to to listen in, and you know, I
just think that that is going to be very important
what we're talking with. Congressman agli Are of Sam Bernardino
coming up today, a five thirty replay that tonight on
both KABC and KSFO. And you know, again it goes
from the Mexican border to the Oregon border in east
(02:25:27):
Areno that this again is more than California, and hopefully
other governors will copy what Governor Gavin Newsom is doing,
whether that's in Maryland or not, because you have to
fight fire with fire with what Trump is trying to
do to redistrict everything, and you know, and and basically
take people of color off the off the rolls and
(02:25:47):
eliminate their their presence and their power. And I think
this is an important piece as we move along because
you know, this time next year, if we lose the
House by a couple of votes, we're going to say, well,
you know, what happened here, and why didn't we get
more help from Democratic governors?
Speaker 7 (02:26:07):
Your thoughts on that, Yeah, I definitely agree that all
of the states should be watching and seeing what happens
in California tonight and doing everything that they can. You know,
they may not like it, they may not like to
have to stoop down to the level of how they've
been treated by and by the current administration. But at
(02:26:27):
this point it's democracy on the line, right and it's
the right of all of the people within our borders,
and that's who they are tasked with protecting. So they
need to make some some critical decisions about how and
what kind of strategy they're going to use moving forward.
Speaker 14 (02:26:45):
I think it's so important and how we move forward,
and if we don't, then you know, shame on us.
I mean, as progressives, as Democrats, and you know, in
general we're all from different all kind of while of
life and different viewpoints. But you know, to me, this
is the opportunity. And Gavin fought back. He's the sort
(02:27:06):
of you know, the lone soldier at Lexington conquered in
a sense that I said, all right, you know you
want to We're gonna you're gonna be uh, you know,
giving us the high tax for Tea and in seventeen
seventy six and you know, we'll we'll we'll fight back
or whatever it was seventeen seventy I don't know all
the years, but the fact is is that I think
(02:27:27):
that people should really follow, you know, what he has done,
because he is fighting back and he's using the tools
that are in front of him to do it and again,
whether it's the Maryland governor or the governor in Illinois,
or I think they are moving on that direction. I
think that's that's the way to do it, all right.
So let's let's take the last two minutes here before
(02:27:50):
we go. What are you looking for in the state
of New Jersey. Our listing area is mainly northern New Jersey.
Right now you're in southern New Jersey. What city town
should we be looking for as key barometers in the
race tonight for governor.
Speaker 7 (02:28:08):
So actually a lot of the eyes around South New
Jersey right now, because that's where Chittarelli really pitted a
lot of his campaign because he had the feeling that
he already had the portions of North Jersey that he
was going to have, and South Jersey was not really
(02:28:29):
familiar with either candidate, with both of them being from
the north, so he spent a lot of time down
here in South Jersey has been the past few elections,
has been primarily read. So it'll be interesting to see
if that still translates or you know, what the effect
(02:28:49):
of what the current federal administration has done that has
definitely impacted the people down here and how that translate
to you know what they use their vote who they
used their vote for.
Speaker 14 (02:29:04):
So Burlington County, of course, Camden is right on the
edge of Philly.
Speaker 7 (02:29:09):
Yeah, Burlington, Camden, definitely, Cape May County. That's a very
big Republican area. So we're curious. There's been a lot
of work down there campaigning. We do have, so kind
of an up ballot swing that we're watching is parts
of Atlantic Ocean County, Burlington County. Anthony Angelosi's running for
(02:29:30):
Assembly and he's actually an educator. And then his running
mate is ANDREWA. Katz, who's an incumbent. So we're watching
to see if that race turns because that's historically a
red area as well.
Speaker 14 (02:29:40):
All right, so now we know, well, look at Burlington County,
Atlantic County, Cape May, and of course Camden.
Speaker 29 (02:29:49):
You have to go.
Speaker 14 (02:29:50):
I know I have to go. Thank you. Enjoy tonight,
Melissa Thomason, Badass Teaching Executive Director. We'll talk to you
next Tuesday and we'll know who the winners are. I hope,
thank you. We'll be right. Thank you too. We listen
to right here on the Jefsey Fack.

Speaker 29 (02:33:22):
Is the Jeff Sato Show.
Speaker 14 (02:33:32):
Thirty three minutes past the hour. It is the Jeff
Santo Show that you are tuned into. We are here
have you Monday through Friday from three to six pm
Eastern time, coast to coast in Boston, New York, New Jersey,
and across the Great State of California, which is where
we are going next. It is a real pleasure to
(02:33:52):
be on the air in San Bernardino, and it is
going to be a real pleasure to talk to their
congressman is the number three ranked in the Democratic House
leadership and he of course is representing the thirty third
district in the great state of California. We're talking about
Congressman Pete agli Are and he joins us on the
(02:34:13):
phone today. Congressman, great to be with you today and
thank you for joining us.
Speaker 25 (02:34:20):
Thanks for having me, Jeff.
Speaker 14 (02:34:22):
Real pleasure. Well, you know, these are crazy days, not
only the election going on around the country, which we
want to talk about, particularly with Prop fifty, but obviously
with mister Trump. It is a very very important day
to show how the democracy can work and how it
needs to work going forward. This is an important time
(02:34:45):
for the country. Your thoughts about election Day twenty twenty five,
you know, you hit it.
Speaker 40 (02:34:52):
I mean, look, our country is built on, you know, people,
the rule of law and free and fair elections. And
Donald Trump not believe in all of these, you to
bed rock principles, but that's fundamentally what we have to
do and what we have to support. And so around
the country, people are exercising their franchise and.
Speaker 25 (02:35:14):
Their ability to vote.
Speaker 40 (02:35:15):
We have important races for governor, as you've covered in
New Jersey and in Virginia and Prop fifty and here
on the West coast. You know, two thirty, little after
two thirty pm, we still have a handful of hours
for people to turn their ballots in. And so that's
what we're encouraging people to do. Go to a vote center,
(02:35:36):
go to a ballot drop center, go to your local
polling place, but make sure that you exercise your right
to vote. And there's only one in many jurisdictions, there's
only one question on the ballots, and it's Proposition fifty.
And I'm confident when all the ballots are counted, we're
going to have a strong showing on the S side.
Speaker 14 (02:35:55):
We're talking with Congressman Pete Augley are again you represent
the thirty third district, Sam Bernardine being a big part
of that. He's also the House Democratic Caucus Chair and
vice chair. In the leadership, we had your colleague on
the Miss Clark, Catherine Clark, the minority whip, just a
couple of weeks ago. So we're getting up and maybe
we can get now that we're on in New York
and New Jersey, hopefully Speaker to be and Minority Leader
(02:36:19):
Keem Jeffries get the whole team going, and you're all
welcome to come on at any point together as well.
Speaker 23 (02:36:24):
I love it.
Speaker 40 (02:36:26):
I love Catherine Clark is amazing. She's a fantastic whip.
She's going to be a great majority leader when we.
Speaker 25 (02:36:34):
Take the House back.
Speaker 14 (02:36:35):
I'm looking forward to that. As a Massachusetts person, I
interviewed her when she was in the state legislature, so
we're very excited about having her in the leadership role.
So talk to me about California. You know, we're on
a number of stations in your great state. It is
the critical state. It's the largest state, fifth largest economy
in the world. All that Prop fifty means a lot
to your state. You can change a lot of districts
(02:36:58):
right now because of what Trump did in Texas with
Abbott and so forth. But this also has an amazing
effect for the rest of the forty eight. I mean,
we were talking with one of the teachers we have
on Melissa Thomlinson of the Badass Teachers, also a part
of the New Jersey Education Association there, and we were
(02:37:20):
talking about the impact if Prop fifty does win tonight
of how it affects her role as a special educated
teacher because right now, she and many other teachers around
the country they can't get anything because even though there's
a Democratic governor there and Governor Phil Murphy, everything is frozen.
So it matters so much for the democracies, so much
(02:37:42):
for all these states besides California. But it's so important
that California voters continue to vote vote blue, as my
sweater is on video as well, and I think that's
a critical point your thoughts about this.
Speaker 40 (02:37:59):
Yeah, absolutely, Look, those governor's mansions are are a very
big deal, and I'm not underselling that at all. A
point of pride for many of us in the House
Democratic Caucus because our current colleague Mikey Cheryl is on
the Ballot and our former colleague, Abbigail Spamberger employees to
become governor of Virginia. So I'm a huge fan of
(02:38:19):
both of them. But what we tried to do in California, honestly, Jeff,
was just, you know, everything you said is true. You know,
fourth largest economy in the world, largest congressional delegation on
the on the Democratic side, and with that comes a
responsibility to lead. And when Donald Trump calls his friend,
you know, Greg Abbott, and says, find me five more
(02:38:41):
you know, congressional districts, we thought that was wrong and
and we called them out on it, and we and
we encouraged other states to do the same. But we
didn't just you know, wave our hands in the air
and say, you know, dang it. We we we said, okay,
let's let's do this. You know, I love and respect
and voted for the independent redistricting Committee.
Speaker 25 (02:39:02):
But you know, I'll be damned if we're just going
to be the only.
Speaker 40 (02:39:06):
Ones who play by the rules and have an independent
redistricting committee when forty other states, you know, can just
bend to the will of Donald Trump. And so what
we said was fundamentally different is we said, you know,
we want a temporary pause on this. If if Republicans
are going to play politics, then we need to play politics,
and we need to draw a map that works for California.
Speaker 25 (02:39:28):
And so that's what we did.
Speaker 40 (02:39:30):
Zoe Lofgren and I took the lead on the congressional
side to draw the map. And I give a ton
of credit to Speaker Robert Reeves and Senate pro Tem
at the time Mike Maguire who ushered this through and
the governor's leadership has been so incredibly key. But you know,
we responded, and you know, five seats are on the
(02:39:50):
line today when people vote. But different than the other
states where these governors just snap their fingers and Trump
snapped his fingers and in these state legislatures bend, we're
taking it to the voters and we're saying, look, we
want to push back, and we want to push back
forcefully to Donald Trump, but we're not going to do
this unless you give us the blessing. And so that's
(02:40:11):
what we're asking Californians to do. And I'm confident that
we're going to have success when the polls close at
eight pm.
Speaker 14 (02:40:19):
No doubt. We again talking with Congressman P dagli Are
of Sam Bernardino, California, the thirty third District Congressional district.
Here on the Jeff Santo Show, I want to ask you, Congressman.
You know it is horrendous. We had an episode here
where we saw it, you know, on video, Ice officials
(02:40:41):
and and others from Homeland Security to you know, taking
a woman of our American background, Arab scent, you know,
into custody. I know you were in Chicago witnessing some
of the things the horror story is going on there
as as as Latino as somebody who understands what is
(02:41:03):
at stake here, you know, for people of color.
Speaker 16 (02:41:07):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (02:41:07):
We had your colleague on Representative Jonathan Jackson the other day,
you know, talking about what has happened in his district
in Chicago. It's just a horror story. And you know,
and when we have to fight back and again you
know Prop fifty and other measures, UH go to do that,
to bring people who understand civil rights and civil liberties,
(02:41:31):
UH in leadership and and again your team of hope
to be Speaker Jefferies and Majority Leader UH Clark and
yourself to you know, to be there and because this
this is not this is not the America that you
and I grew up with.
Speaker 25 (02:41:50):
Now it really, it really isn't.
Speaker 40 (02:41:52):
And you know, it's so distressing to many Americans who
turn the TV on and see on the Sunday you know,
interviews that Donald Trump says ICE raids haven't gone far enough.
But we've heard first sand from families who have been
ripped apart and are struggling because of these raids, and
and it's and it's dangerous. And we know the facts
(02:42:14):
also show that they are picking up uh US citizens
as well. They aren't uh, they aren't just going after
violent criminals. They're picking up US citizens and harassing families
of of others.
Speaker 25 (02:42:30):
I mean, this is this is, this is so tough.
We believe in a strong border and a rule of law.
Speaker 40 (02:42:36):
But the actions that ICE is taking is deeply troubling.
So that's that's where you know, that's where we are,
and we're going to keep holding this administration accountable.
Speaker 25 (02:42:46):
We had a field hearing in Chicago. There will be
more field.
Speaker 40 (02:42:50):
Hearings announced, led by also Robert Garcia on the House
Oversight Committee.
Speaker 25 (02:42:57):
That is all you know what Donald Trump is avoiding.
Speaker 40 (02:43:00):
Donald Trump and House Republicans want to avoid accountability and oversight.
And now it might be, you know, fifty two weeks
from now that we win an election to be able
to provide that, we need to continue to shine a
light and to provide some of that oversight even when
we don't control committees in Congress. And so that's what
(02:43:20):
we're trying to do is raise the level of awareness,
let people know the resources that are available to them.
More important, they let them know the rights that they
have as well when ICE agents try to confront them
in their car and their.
Speaker 25 (02:43:34):
Home on the street and their school.
Speaker 40 (02:43:37):
You know, it's just deeply distressing to so many Americans
that the ICE can now go into churches and hospitals
and synagogues and you know, previous previous areas where both administrations,
you know, agreed not to engage in enforcement activity. Donald
Trump doesn't care about those rules and the norms that
(02:44:00):
we've had in the past. And like we said, he's
saying this isn't gone far enough. And I think for
Americans across this country who value hard work and the
labor that had done around the country, they're saying enough
is enough.
Speaker 14 (02:44:16):
It's just callous, it's mean spirited, it's just outrageous and
that's what we have to overcome over the next two
years to get the Democrats back in charge both in
the House and the Senate, and my view, begin impeachment
hearings and hopefully this time it will work again. It
is a critical time in our in our country. Right now,
(02:44:36):
we're talking with Congress from p dagli Are of Sam Bernardino, California,
represents a thirty third district there. I want to ask
you a little bit about the shutdown because this has
so many impacts anything. And you know, the polls only
get what you get because you know, Trump owns a
big microphone. He has a lot of people on conservative radio.
(02:44:57):
You know, we're trying to do what we can here
on this show, and we try expand. But the point
is is that they obviously have a built in advantage.
One of the things that they do is they love
to lie, and you know they talk about how towers
are going to be great. Well, I'll tell you we've
been using the prop and I told this to your colleague,
(02:45:18):
miss Clark, that she can use as well. You know,
I'm from Massachusetts and you know Dunkin Donuts was started
here and about a week ago or a month ago.
I went to pick it up at the local grocery
store here. It was seven dollars and ninety nine cents
for a one pound bag of Dunkin Donuts. It's fourteen
dollars ninety nine cents. Now within a week it went
up from you know, seven dollars to fourteen dollars. This
(02:45:39):
is the Trump tower for economy. And I think it
between that to shut down and his other cocamini ideas,
you know, it's costing Americans jobs. We had a person
on from SEI un Age last week, Lee Blackman, and
she was illustrating her federal workers that belonged to this
union close with the AFGE as well, and and basically
(02:46:04):
she's saying, they go from the Starbucks line, you know,
more expensive coffee than than dunkin donuts, uh, to a
soup line. You know, it's that stark for so many people.
And it's and it's the Democrats who are fighting. You know,
they don't it's very hard what uh you know, Leader
(02:46:27):
Jefferies and Leader Schumer is doing uh to try to
do all this, but you know these are the effects
you I don't see the other side that concerned, you know,
I mean they're not. They're not maybe gonna throw some
paper towels like it did to the to the people
in Puerto Rico last term when there was a hurricane there.
Mister Trump, that is you know, it's it's just something
(02:46:49):
that you know, there's no empathy on the other side
your thoughts.
Speaker 25 (02:46:54):
No, no, there really there really isn't.
Speaker 21 (02:46:56):
Uh.
Speaker 40 (02:46:57):
And I mean this is from a guy who campaigned
and said he's going to lower.
Speaker 25 (02:47:00):
The costs that people face on day one, uh.
Speaker 40 (02:47:04):
And everything he has done has raised the costs that
people face. And namely the tariffs that you're that you're
talking about, which is directly attacks attacks on the American
consumer who is having to shoulder this burden whether you're
whether you're buying you know, coffee or you're buying your
kids a bike for Christmas. You're gonna be You're gonna
(02:47:28):
have this added tax, this Trump tax, because of these tariffs.
And and that's just you know, that's just a shame.
But that's you know, that's who he is.
Speaker 25 (02:47:39):
And he doesn't care that Americans are having to pay more.
He doesn't care.
Speaker 40 (02:47:42):
That means he lied to the American people when he
said he would lower the costs. You know, this, this
fits his This allows him, uh to use this as
a as a tool and a weapon, uh to to
you know brate you know, other world leaders, you know
in the Oval Office on the way I mean, but
this is just so terrible, so reckless. And what's what's
(02:48:05):
also shocking is that more Republicans just don't call him
out on it. They were supposed to be a party
of free markets, right, and where has that they have
completely been? They lost that, Uh, they've lost a lot,
but they've lost their will to push back on him.
This is Donald Trump's Republican party, and it's just it's
(02:48:27):
just amazing to me that more of them who disagree
behind closed doors don't say anything when he is taxing
the American public.
Speaker 25 (02:48:35):
And you know, one of the big groups is affected here.
Speaker 40 (02:48:40):
They may not always be your your listeners, but you know,
the Midwest and the farmers of America are the ones
who are impacted. And that's what we're what we're saying,
and they're saying a direct correlation to Donald trump policies
and their and their pocketbooks and their ability to provide
(02:49:00):
food that hits the table of the Americans. And that's
a problem. But Donald Trump doesn't seem to be burdened
or to care much about it.
Speaker 14 (02:49:10):
There's no doubt we look forward to expanding in the
Midwest as well in the coming weeks and months. Here
on the Jeff Santo Show, Congressman, I want to thank you,
I think the people of California for electing Gavin Newsom.
You know, regardless of whether you think he should be
the next president United States, I'm leaning in that direction myself,
But the point is is that he began to fight back,
(02:49:30):
and I think the rest of you and your colleagues
both in the House and then the Legislature in Sacramento
have done that. So I thank you as an American
citizen for leading the fight back. We got to push back,
We got to fight back peacefully, as I like to say.
But I think that you guys have let us in
the right track, and with a little luck, you know,
the people in California will vote, and I think that
(02:49:52):
could cause some momentum for Democrats nationwide. Your final thoughts, sir, absolutely, thanks,
thanks so much for that.
Speaker 25 (02:50:01):
A couple hours left to vote.
Speaker 40 (02:50:03):
We encourage everybody in California who's listening to your show
to make sure that they get their ballot in. You know,
this is so incredibly important to make sure that Donald
Trump doesn't rig the next election, and so California is
forcefully pushing back. Thank you so much for having me
on your show.
Speaker 14 (02:50:19):
It's so so great to have you. Look forward to
doing it again. Congressman p Dagley are of Sam Bernardino
in the thirty third district in the great state of California.
Appreciate it and look forward to our next visit. Thanks
so much. Congressman, thank you, thank you. All right, we
turned to open phones here at eight three three five
four five five three three three. You know, it is
(02:50:41):
really great, great refreshing to hear Democrats understanding what is
at stake. Again, he's number three in the leadership of
the Democratic House and this to me, the House Democratic
Caucus Chair and vice chair. It is so important to
have leaders who a are willing to come on shows
like mine to talk about this again. Our next goal
(02:51:04):
is UH Minority Leader Jeffreys, now that we're on in
New York and I think his district in Harlem and
through the Bronx, So we're looking forward to to speaking
to him, but to have you know, the leaders and
the Democratic Party in the House, and we hope to
have senators too, and we're looking to get Senator Warren
over the next couple of weeks. Of course, we've had
her on the show many times in the past in Massachusetts,
(02:51:25):
and it to me, you know, if you utilize the tools,
and you know, I'm one of the tools that Democrats have,
we don't have a lot of me unfortunately, and that's
something that needs to be expanded and others as well.
But I think that it is it is important, you know,
for folks, and you could hear it in the congressman's voice.
(02:51:48):
He's deadly serious about what is at stake here. Not
only are the streets with ice, you know, the concerns
of people who are being laid off, the federal government workers.
You know that the concerns of how important you know,
a vote is. This is election day. To have more
of these and that they count is critical. We don't
want to have a situation what we talked about, good
(02:52:10):
friend Jerry Austin about you know what the fix of
orbon is or other places, and this is something that
could happen, folks. We have to be vigilant. But if
a solid win tonight coming off the big win of
people showing up seven million of them nationwide on the
No Kings rallies. This all points in a positive direction
(02:52:32):
for the Democratic Party for people who understand what is
at stake, and the time is now, you know, to
get people out there to vote. You know, there's still
a lot of time in the East Coast. You know,
as I look at it, another three hours or so
before polls close. And I believe New York is eight o'clock.
(02:52:53):
I think New Jersey is too, and you know in
cast California, you know it's only a little bit before
three o'clock. This is this is an important day. You know,
these side people, well, it doesn't count. The majority people
don't vote. That is all well and true that some
people think that way. But you have to go out
(02:53:14):
and you've got to show who what you stand for
and who you are. As I said for those watching
on at the Jeff Santo Show on video, I'm we're
in a blue sweater today, that is to vote blue,
and it is critical now more than ever to do
(02:53:35):
just that. I want to open up the phone lines, Kevin,
let me know who we have at eight three three
five four five five three three three for those of you.
For those of you who are up late tonight in
the eastern part of the country, we urge you to
tune in to our night broadcast. In California. We are
(02:53:59):
going to be talking to Gary South, the political consultant
out of Los Angeles and San Francisco, both places. He
also will be talking to California Teachers Association David Goldberg,
and we'll replay the interview with the congressman tonight, plus
your phone calls at eight three three five four five
(02:54:21):
five three three three. There could be some surprises as
well as we embark. We're going to do this next
Tuesday as well, from seven to eight pm on both
KABC and KSFO at seven pm Pacific time, that's ten
o'clock Eastern. I want to also talk to you a
little bit before we go here in the remaining minutes,
(02:54:42):
and we'll try to get a call in as well.
My feeling is that there is positive energy here and
you know if you have listened to interviews, and we're
going to try to get them on over the next
week or so. The folks from Indivisible, We've obviously talked
to Alex Laws. I'm gonna try to talk to him
(02:55:03):
over the next couple of days as well. From Social
Security Works was part of the group that put together
the fantastic No King's Rally move on dot org, ac lu,
et cetera. And to me, they don't go away, you know,
and it may not necessarily be another massive rally. Maybe
(02:55:24):
it will be, you know, between now and the next
election November, you know, a year from not today, but
a year from now, in November of twenty six. You know,
these are going to be critical times, critical times people
to say, hey, you got to go out and vote.
The democracy is at stake. You know, your your community's
at steak. Again, I keep bringing this up. I'm gonna
(02:55:46):
get another prop thing. I have to figure out if
it can fit on the screen. But this actually fits
pretty well. The Dunkin Donuts bag again. If you're watching
us on The Jeff Santez Show dot com. And by
the way, tonight, if you are outside of California, we
want you listening to KBC seven ninety in LA from
the Mexican border all the way up to Santa Barbara,
or KSFO pretty much from the Oregon border, reading all
(02:56:09):
the way down to Santa Barbara, East A Reno, covered Sacramento,
San Jose, Silicon Valley, and of course San Francisco and Oakland.
But you know, the price of coffee, you know here
in Massache's is also expensive all the way across the
country because of the tarifs, you know, because of Donald
Trump hating the progressive leader in Brazil to Silva, and
(02:56:33):
he want you know, Balsonario because of his guilt in corruption,
much like mister Trump. You know, you know, it was
indicted and so forth, and you know he didn't want
he wants to put the pressure on Brazil.
Speaker 19 (02:56:44):
You know.
Speaker 14 (02:56:44):
This is what happens. This is the policy of Donald Trump,
you know, and this is what happens. These are the consequences.
Speaker 25 (02:56:51):
You know.
Speaker 14 (02:56:51):
There you go, all right, let's go to John in
Minnesota at coffee smells good at Minneapolis. You're next here
on the Jeff Santo Show. Go right ahead, John.
Speaker 15 (02:57:07):
Yeah, I guess probably the polls will be closing pretty
soon in.
Speaker 16 (02:57:14):
In Boston and well in Massachusetts and then also in
New York.
Speaker 14 (02:57:20):
Right, yeah, we'll have some information coming up. Yeah, yeah,
I mean I would anticipate that Mom Donnie would be
declared to win a relatively early presumably in the eight
o'clock hour, so look for that. I think it'll be
a little bit closer in New Jersey and Virginia, although
Virginia could also be called pretty quickly too. So let's
hope that's as yesterday. Debora Quoinnovaca, the former deputy chief
(02:57:44):
of staff to current New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. You
know she's hoping for somewhat of a blowout, but you know,
polls indicated it's it's probably a single digit race at
this point, but you know, eight points is better than four,
so you know, do it in that area. So and
I'm looking forward to hearing the results of the races
(02:58:07):
in your city tomorrow too. I know you've got any
races going on there, John, so we'll look forward to
that as well. Appreciate you, man, and we'll talk to
you hopefully tomorrow, and and stay tuned tonight too online
the Jeff Santos Show. People outside of California, Appreciate you man.
All right, folks, just a little bit of time here
(02:58:29):
before we go again. If you are in California tonight,
we are live on both KBCAM seven ninety from the
Mexican border up to Santa Barbara in southern California, Orange County,
et cetera, San Diego. If you are in northern California
listening to US online, you can listen tonight to KSFO,
(02:58:52):
a great signal emanating from San Francisco, covered Sacramento, Silicon Valley,
San Jose, out to Reno, nov and as far north
as the as the Oregon border. I know it definitely
gets to reading, maybe not as strong as you get
to the Oregon border, but we're looking forward to that
and we'll be posting on our website the guests for
(02:59:16):
tonight as well. Again at the Jeff Santo Show, I
want to thank Kevin for producing this broadcast with help
from Freddie s and the great A team Rocky Robert
and company. We thank them all again tonight, folks, ten
